When I was five or six, my grandma woke my sister and me up around midnight. She tells us to be extra quiet and leads us to the door. We crept quietly behind her as she points out flickering lights under a recently sprouted mushroom. She whispers, “The fairies visited us… don’t move too fast or they’ll disappear!” So we just stood there in amazement as the colorful lights flickered. To this day, Grandma never admitted that she placed the lights under the mushroom just to get us going.

Books That REPRINT FROM ISSUE 165

ast month I focused on some of the movies that have inspired travel, and this month the focus will be on books. Books are often more of an inspiration to me than movies when written by authors who know how to describe a sense of place. A good travel book tells you where to go; a great travel book lets you imagine you are there!
A Year in Provence – The first in
a series of entertaining, funny and fast reads by Peter Mayle. His books take you through the trials and tribulations of moving to Provence, France, and then once settled, of the gastronomic wonders and quirkiness of this wonderful area of the world. From truffle hunting to frogs’ legs festivals and of course wine, these books made me fall in love with Provence and southern France before I ever set foot there. Leave Paris behind, and discover the area’s wonders.
TOP: AIGUINES CASTLE, PROVENCE, FRANCE CENTER: THE SHAKESPEARE AND CO. BOOKSTORE, PARIS, FRANCE BOTTOM: NEW ORLEANS, USA
A Movable Feast – Speaking of
Paris, my desire to travel to the City of Lights began once I read this fantastic Ernest Hemingway memoir. Centered around his friends and acquaintances who frequented the now-gone original bookstore Shakespeare & Co., the author’s expert prose makes you want to travel to a Paris where glimpses of that fascinating period between the wars existed (a second Shakespeare & Co. became a bohemian hangout in the 50’s and is still there).
A Confederacy of Dunces –
Pulitzer Prize winning novel by John Kennedy Toole which takes place in New Orleans. It focuses on odd characters which are lovable at times and despicable at times, but paint the true color of the city. Having lived there and returned numerous times (read an article I wrote in an earlier issue), the way to truly know the city is to get into the mind of the residents, and this hilarious romp through the French Quarter will do that. GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, SAN FRANCISCO, CA
On the Road – A classic by Jack Kerouac, this novel defined the “Beat” generation. While I was just born when beatniks were fading out and hippies were fading in, my love of Greenwich Village as a teenager in New York City began with this novel and developed to my passion for road trips to this day. Criss-crossing the country to San Francisco and down to Mexico City with stops in Denver and elsewhere, Kerouac illuminates an interesting slice of American life during this most interesting time post-war.
Memoirs of a Geisha – a novel by
AT MY BIRTHDAY DINNER WITH GEISHA.
Arthur Golden so compelling it draws the reader in from the very beginning and gives interesting insight into the mostly misunderstood life of a Geisha. When in Tokyo a few years ago, I made a point to take the bullet train to Kyoto, stayed in a traditional Ryokan, and with my friends had a celebratory birthday evening entertained by a Geisha which I will never forget. A must-read for those interested in a trip to Japan, taking the reader from post-war until modern day.
RED TORII GATES IN FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE, KYOTO, JAPAN
A Room with a View – E.M. Foster’s classic novel takes place between the magical city of Florence, Italy and Surrey, my favorite area of Southern England. It’s an insight into how far we have come as a society with our mores and values, taking place at the turn of the century. The plot twists and turns and is interwoven with wonderful descriptions of the area surrounding the chaos. Definitely a novel for those who love travel as a way to head back in time. Each visit to Florence and Tuscany as well as to Surrey, only an hour or so from London, transports me to a time gone by because of this book…and that is the definition of a truly great romantic novel.
CASTLE RUINS IN SURRY, ENGLAND
T
hese suggestions will give you a taste of what inspired my passion for travel to these wonderful places. I always find it fascinating to visit somewhere for the first time, yet have a feeling of “déjà vu” simply because I have immersed myself in a novel or memoir having taken place in the same destination. Hopefully this short reading list will inspire you as well. Enjoy!

RETIREMENT PLANNING AND FINANCIAL PLANNING
Why Retirement Feels More Complicated Than It Used To by Danny Howes, EA, RFC

etirement planning today often involves more moving parts than people expect: income, investments, taxes, and long-term decisions that need to work in harmony. For many, it helps to have a conversation with professionals who understand how these pieces connect. At East Coast Tax and Financial, we work with individuals and couples to review their current situation, answer questions, and help bring clarity to retirement decisions. Our approach focuses on coordination, so financial planning, retirement planning, and tax considerations are looked at together, not in isolation. fall
all is my favorite season. Though the thermometer isn’t registering cool temperatures yet, I love the idea of chilly weather and warming up with hot soup. I’m a big fan of the “Silver Palate Cookbook” and have been making variations of this recipe for years. I substitute diced ham steak for the ham hock; add chopped spinach and a can of chopped tomatoes; top with parmesan cheese. It’s hearty enough for a meal with a green salad and crusty rye bread. Tastes better the next day.

Directions:
1. Sort through beans and discard any pebbles. Soak the beans overnight in water that covers them by 3 inches. The next day, drain the water, rinse the beans; set aside.
2. Melt bacon fat or butter in a large heavy pot over low heat. Add the onions, leeks, celery, and carrots; cook, covered, about 25 minutes, until the vegetables are tender. 3. Stir in the thyme, bay leaves, and a grinding of black pepper, and pour in the stock. Add the parsnips, ham hock and beans and bring up to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, about 45 minutes, until the beans are tender. 4. Remove the ham hock and allow it to cool slightly. Cut the meat off the bone, cut it into chunks, and return the meat to the pot. 5. Add the cabbage, parsley, and garlic, and simmer for another 10-15 minutes. Taste and correct the seasoning. Add salt at this point if the soup needs it. Serve immediately.

ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH & APPLE SOUP WITH PARMESAN CRISPS
It’s October and the blazing hot days of summer begin to cool off. It’s time to think of fall favorites, like this simple rich-tasting butternut squash soup. Do take the time to grate the parmesan cheese for the crisps. Prepackaged parmesan can be dry and won’t melt like freshly grated cheese. They’re delicious! Serves 6-8
Ingredients
• 4 pounds butternut squash (about 2 medium/large), halved lengthwise, seeds removed * • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 medium tart apple, like Granny Smith, diced • 1/2 medium yellow onion, diced • 8 fresh sage leaves, plus more for garnish if desired • 2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth • 2 1/2 cups water • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1/3 cup half & half or heavy cream • 1/2 cup toasted pumpkin seeds, for garnish • 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano, for crisps, for garnish
Directions
1. Place halved squash on foil-lined baking sheet, cut side up, and brush the tops with 1 tablespoon melted butter. Generously salt and pepper. Bake in preheated 425° oven until tender and brown around the edges, 50 minutes to one hour. (The more deeply you brown the squash in the oven, the more intense and caramelized its flavor will be.) Set aside to cool. 2. Peel, core, and dice the apple; dice the onion. Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in large pot. Sauté the apple, onion, and sage until softened, stirring occasionally, 6–8 minutes. Remove from heat. 3. When the squash is cool enough to handle, use a large spoon to scoop the roasted flesh into the apple and onion mixture. Discard the skins. 4. Stir in the broth, water, salt and pepper, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cream. 5. Purée the soup in batches until smooth. (If using a blender, remove the pour cap from the blender lid and cover with kitchen towel to allow the hot steam to escape.) Return to the pot and bring to a simmer. 6. Garnish with pumpkin seeds, sage leaves, and/ or Parmigiano Reggiano crisps (recipe follows) Make Crisps 7. Form 1 tablespoon of freshly grated cheese into 16 circles about 2 inches in diameter and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet one inch apart. Press down lightly on the middle of each mound to make them evenly thick. Bake at 375° until cheese is golden brown and lacy, 4-7 minutes. Note: Publix sells pre-cut butternut squash. If you don’t see them, ask a member of Produce to cut them for you.

HONEY APPLE PORK CHOPS
A delicious autumn dinner. Tender pan-seared pork chops with honey-glazed apples, topped with walnuts or sage. Serve with baked or mashed sweet potatoes and a glass of chilled pinot noir. Serves 4
Ingredients
• 4 3/4-inch thick pork chops • 1/2 teaspoon each salt & pepper • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 tablespoon butter • 2 large apples, cored and cut into cubes • 2 tablespoons honey • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 3 tablespoons chopped walnuts or fresh sage leaves
Directions
1. Pat pork chops dry with paper towels and sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper. 2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and add chops. Brown well, about 5 minutes per side. Stir in the butter, apples, honey, and garlic; cover and simmer until pork is tender, about 8 minutes. (A safe internal temperature is at least 145 degrees.) 3. Plate the chops and spoon on the apples and pan juices and top with walnuts or sage leaves – or both.
VANILLA BEAN PANNA COTTA
Directions
WITH BERRY COMPOTE
This dessert takes about 15 minutes to prepare, plus 4 hours of chilling time to let the panna cotta set properly. The berry compote takes about 10 minutes to cook and should be cooled before serving.
Ingredients
1. Sprinkle the gelatin over 3 tablespoons of cold water in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes so it softens and becomes gel-like. 2. In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, and both the seeds and pod of the vanilla bean (or vanilla extract if using). Warm the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and it’s hot but not boiling. Remove the vanilla bean pod. 3. Stir the bloomed gelatin into the hot cream mixture until completely dissolved. Then remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
For the Panna Cotta: • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 cup whole milk • 2 tsp vanilla extract • ½ cup granulated sugar • 1 packet unflavored gelatin powder • 3 tablespoons cold water For the Berry Compote: • 1 cup mixed berries of choice (fresh or frozen) • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
4. Pour the mixture into ramekins or molds. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours until the panna cotta is set and firm. 5. In a small saucepan, combine the mixed berries, sugar, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the berries break down and the sauce thickens slightly, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract if desired, and let cool to room temperature. 6. Once the panna cotta has set, gently run a knife around the edges to loosen. Invert onto serving plates. Spoon the berry compote over and around each panna cotta before serving. Enjoy!

Pork Chops
& Pinot Noir REPRINT FROM ISSUE 81
BY GLENN SUDNICK, CERTIFIED WINE SOMMELIER
hen I think pork chops, I inevitably think Pinot Noir. Remember P & P – Pork & Pinot. This wine is delicate and pairs well with cuts of lean meat. When pork chops are on the table, I’m always looking for the side of apples, like homemade applesauce or caramelized apples. The acidity of apples goes well with the lean pork … so why not add apples in with your pork chops? One of my favorite dishes is sautéed pork chops with caramelized apples. I like to pair the chops with the Siduri Parsons’ Vineyard Russian River 2023 Pinot Noir. The wine has big raspberry and dark cherry flavors with subtle cola and floral notes. It is impressive, with hints of earth and herb on the palate. The complexity strikes every sense with a welcoming fruit-driven and spice finish and will age gracefully for the several years. If you have a love for Pinot Noir, then Siduri has to be on your list. They have many choices of wines that span from Oregon to California, each with their own vibrant personality. To complete your dinner, I’d suggest something like a creamy vanilla bean panna cotta topped with berries, or a simple dish of your favorite ice cream. Wishing everyone a great start to much anticipated cooler weather!

n stark contrast (no pun intended) to March’s critical box office bomb, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Marvel Studios again ups the ante and shows us how to do a superhero movie correctly. Just as Batman and Superman went toe-totoe in their film, now less than two months later we see Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) face off in Marvel Comic’s massive cinematic universe, Captain America: Civil War. Looking at all the destruction that has followed in the wake of The Avengers’ battles, the United Nations calls for the elite group of super-powered heroes to stand down and answer to the world’s governments, rather than spring into action whenever they deem necessary. Tony Stark (Iron Man) believes that as superheroes, they have a responsibility to be kept in check and answer to a higher calling. Captain America (Steve Rogers) disagrees with this assessment, as he fears corruption from any government and would prefer The Avengers to remain a private organization. Lines are drawn with the Avengers being split down the middle; half of them siding with Rogers, and the other half with Stark. Among the new faces thrown into the mix, we are introduced to Black Panther and Spiderman, making their respective debuts in Marvel’s series of movies which is OCTOBER 2026

sure to delight even the most casual comic book fan. Aside from the fast-paced action and the parade of brightly-colored characters in this film, we are fortunate enough to see two well-written protagonists with conflicting ideologies. Neither one is a villain, and both believe that they are fighting the other hero for the greater good. You can feel the weight upon the shoulders of the heroes and find yourself cheering for both of them, even as they are fighting. Fans of this series will already be familiar with these characters as we have seen them in several previous movies, yet newcomers to the genre can enjoy the film all the same as it gives you just the right amount of exposition without giving an excessive amount of information. he dialogue is crisp and fresh. The plot moves along at a quick and snappy pace with the perfect balance of action and exposition. For all of its characters, each one of them actually has a solid reason for being present in the story and none of them feel “shoe-horned” into the film. It was exciting and filled with drama while still managing to make you laugh. All in all, I couldn’t find a single thing wrong with this movie. Captain America 3: Civil War is the superhero vs. superhero movie we deserved all along and is this reviewer’s new favorite film in this genre. ….. And I really like superhero movies.

Mr. Lauga, 8th grade Geography. He brought a record player in with the album Ghost in the Machine by the Police. “Every little thing she does is magic...” That day we listened to music for the entire class. He was my favorite teacher – not because of this; this was just something he did that reflected his personality. I enjoyed Mr. Lauga because he was so personable, he really related to us and spoke to us on our level. He was the kind of teacher who’d give you a high-five if you saw him in town. He taught me what a difference an adult can make in a teen’s life by coming beside him instead of over him.

Get Ready to Be
GRATEFUL BY BETH WALSH STEWART
I
t’s a month early, I know. Mother Nature doesn’t change her outfit to include the golden shades of fall foliage until next month. We’ve got another month of mini bags of our favorite candy and costumes to get through before we consider the Thanksgiving menu. Give us a break. We’ll be grateful in November. I understand your lament but bear with me. This might make sense. What if gratitude isn’t seasonal? What if we lived our lives as if each and every good gift was a blessing purposefully placed at our feet so that we would eventually trip over the goodness in the world? Did you ever play Legos? With Legos we create unconventional cities with peculiar structures that we challenge to tumble over. With Legos the viability of the whole construction depends upon the foundation established before any piece is put in place. Life can be like Legos. Among all the communal struggles we’ve faced in the past two years hides an indiscriminate untruth onto which we have been building. Because of this faulty foundation, many of us have lost hope and have ceased to mourn when one of our beloved structures topples over. We’ve come to expect ruin. What is the foundational error that is robbing us of our confidence? We have forgotten that God is good. He isn’t against us; He is for us. He didn’t abandon us. He is
here. He is seen every morning as the sun rises on our beautiful beaches. He is palpable when a treasured child breaks into a grin and a mad dash forward at the sight of us. God is heard in the song of the early bird and the steady accompanying beat kept by the red-headed woodpecker. He is tasted in the seasonal flavors of pumpkin pies and stone crab claws. You can smell His sweet goodness in the flowering ginger plant or the earthy aroma of a storm moving across Indian River County. When we get conscious of all He provides, we can remember to hold on and to trust. With division and fear all around us, let us approach each day with gratitude knowing that He is faithful. Let our base support start there, and whatever we build will automatically hold up. Steadfast is His middle name. Thank You, God, for the many gifts You’ve given us, including community, comfort, hope … and Legos.
“Always pursue what is good for one another and for all people. Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:15-18

A
question that gets asked a lot by many different people is: “Does God still heal today?” This is a very exciting subject, because in order to answer this question, the way we have to approach it might come as a little surprising to you.
than just physical sickness. You will find that it even describes healing of a home and healing of water, making this incredibly interesting and mind blowing.
This is a great clue as to whether God still heals today. If He healed before, and He does not change, then surely He can still heal today. Both God the Father and Jesus Christ healed many people in both the Old and New Testament. Something that is quite remarkable to note when you look at scripture, specifically in the Old Testament, is the many different names that are used to describe God.
restoring is the nature and character of God and He does not change, there is no doubt that He is who He says He is and that He can heal again.
What this indicates is that the true meaning of this word would probably be the Lord who “restores.” He restores things that have In order to discover whether God still heals, been damaged, destroyed, or made sick. we have to look at who He is. The Bible tells We see this described so beautifully in the us that He is the Lord and He never changes. New Testament because Jesus came to heal Malachi 3:6 (New King James Version) the brokenhearted. This once again shows us that Jesus can restore a broken heart. 6 “For I am the Lord, I do not change.” Jesus prays for the sick and they are healed In the book of Hebrews, the Bible tells us that or restored. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. It is important to understand if healing or
The Bible also refers to God as “Jehovah Jireh” meaning “The Lord who will provide.” Clearly this is self-explanatory in describing God as a provider, showing us that He will provide for us. The name that I would like to highlight today is the name “Jehovah Rapha” describing God as a Healer. “Jehovah Rapha” literally means “the Lord that heals.” When you study this specific word in depth, the meaning becomes so much more powerful because you will find that it describes God’s healing power, showing that it is far more

This is no mistake; you will find that these names are given to Him because of who He is and what He does. They describe His character and nature. To give you an example: He is known as “Jehovah Raah” which means “The Lord is my shepherd.” In this context we know He is the one who takes care of us and He is the one that leads us.
REV’S VERSES
As the Bible tells us:
1 Peter 2:24 (NKJV) ²⁴who Himself bore
our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
It is important to note that it describes what took place at the Cross when Jesus paid for our sins, and that we have healing available because it was paid for at the cross. The word “healed” in this context is so important because it describes so much more than salvation alone. ext month we will be discussing this in a little more detail. We will also look at why we don’t see healing in every situation. Be at peace and remember, if He did it before He will do it again!
Blessings, Pastor Alex
