NEWS Summer at the Vernon Public Art Gallery is in full bloom, and we are thrilled to share a diverse and thought-provoking lineup of exhibitions that capture the richness of artistic expression in our region. Leaving Home by Rhonda Neufeld invites viewers to contemplate themes of place and memory through stunning traditional printmaking. Soft Architectures by Sylvan Hamburger transforms domestic materials into immersive installations that explore urban change and nostalgia. HOT OFF THE PRESS showcases fresh, experimental works by UBCO student artists, reflecting bold new directions in printmaking. Through Our Eyes, created in collaboration with the Teen Junction Youth Centre, offers powerful insight into youth experiences and creativity. I’d also like to extend an enormous thank you for the incredible turnout and generosity at Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts. With your support, we surpassed all previous fundraising records—raising over $100,000 to support exhibitions, programs, and community initiatives. This extraordinary milestone affirms the strength of our local arts community and inspires us as we continue our mission. Central to my work is my relationship with the land, where I live and where I travel. I explore the relationship between the land and my body that exists literally, metaphorically and philosophically. Walking is a way of becoming aware of the intimate details of the land, whether I am following the path of a feral animal or a path of my own direction. I perceive the sounds, smells, textures, colours, changing light and contours of the land with all of my senses and this connects me with the earth and the actual ground that I stand on. I want to get closer and more personal in my interactions with the natural world and blur the edges of where we overlap. Leaning into sun warmed, body temperature stone, as the heat radiates back into the night, is like being within the folds of another body. Leaning into the trunk of a tree with its rough skin, so like my own aging skin, I become aware of the pulse of its deeply rooted life. There is joy and wonder in all these experiences that I want to record in the most direct way. Later in my studio as I work with my gathered materials and my art materials I extend my immersed and embodied experience of each place. The works in this exhibition, Leaving Home, are mainly from the place that I knew so well, that was our home(land) for forty-three years, and which became the source of my subject matter over these decades. My home included the locales within my walking distance; the lake at the end of the road, the mountain above us (with so much animal life), and the rock cliffs and worked fields close by. The trees in this exhibition are the trees of home. When I make rubbings of trees and stone my hands are on my subject in a very intimate way, where we interact at our own life-sized scale. I transfer these rubbings to copper plates, wood blocks or lithographic stones to etch or cut the image into the surface. By printing multiple impressions from this matrix I can use this repetition to amplify an idea, as in the lithographic prints in the installation piece “Beyond the Aspen Grove”. There is also something devotional and meditative about the process of printing an edition of multiples. Printmaking has been my main means of expression for a very long time, the inherent qualities of the various methods are embedded in how I think about making art. One of the most wonderful things about printmaking, because the image prints opposite from what I see on a plate or block, is that the first impression is always a surprise. The element of chance delights me, and offers another opportunity to further respond to the developing image, extending my time with the residue of my experiences in the natural world.

My practice is grounded in corresponding acts of public intervention and personal recollection. I employ printmaking, textiles, architecture and colour to reimagine experiences of place and self within changing contemporary landscapes. To look outside is to look inside, and vice versa. The surface of architecture, the contours of landscapes, the patterns of everyday life offer a textured impression of the city and its inhabitants—our fears, desires and tenuous states of belonging. This creative process is often collaborative and site-specific, resulting in theatrical installations that exist in reciprocity with their surroundings. Soft Architectures presents the mono-printed impressions of salvaged architectural surfaces. These prints emerged from the rapid upheaval of real estate within contemporary built environments. Over the last five years, I have worked to collect, carve and print the debris of demolished homes onto bedsheets and other found textiles. The resulting impressions trace shifting notions of place, memory and belonging to create monumental installations that reimagine residential debris as unconventional printmaking matrixes. Much of the work was initially created and presented in outdoor public spaces with participation from local residents. In representing these soft impressions at the Vernon Public Art Gallery, I look to reconsider their composition and installation within a new gallery and regional context. Much of the work was made in response to the rapid gentrification and redevelopment of my childhood community on Vancouver’s east side. As a point of conception, Soft Architectures references writer Lisa Robertson’s Office for Soft Architecture; a literary project which, in her words, “came into being as I watched the city of Vancouver dissolve in the fluid called money. Buildings disappeared into newness. I tried to recall spaces and what I remembered was surfaces.” Like Robertson, I feel a perturbed curiosity by the rate of development throughout the city. Equally, I’m fascinated by the ways in which the marks and traces of surfaces can conceal, hold and reveal histories while also reflecting absence—a phenomenon that extends far beyond the particular vernaculars of Vancouver.

EVENTS Riot on the Roof is Vernon’s annual alternative arts festival. The festival prioritizes creating exposure for young talent, with this event previously attracting over 400 attendees. Get ready for the epic conclusion to summer 2025!

Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts, the Vernon Public Art Gallery’s signature summer fundraiser, returned for its 39th year on Wednesday, July 16th. Held at the Coldstream Community Hall and garden, this year’s event was a record-breaking success, raising over $100,000 in support of VPAG’s exhibitions, programming, and community outreach. This incredible milestone reflects the generosity and passion of our community. From the artists and bidders to our sponsors, volunteers, and guests, every contribution made a meaningful impact. Special recognition goes to Janet Armstrong, whose incredible $10,000 donation helped the gallery surpass its fundraising goal. VPAG is deeply grateful to presenting sponsor Bannister Honda and the many local businesses who provided food, beverages, auction items, and inkind support. The evening brought together art, live music, and community connection, with emceeing by Brian Martin and an exhilarating live auction led by Don Raffan. Highlights included James Postill’s Ocean Breaker at $6,000 and Shawn Serfas’s Bifold at $6,250. We also extend sincere thanks to the hardworking volunteers and staff whose dedication behind the scenes made the event possible. Their contributions, along with the support of local businesses and individuals, made the evening truly special. The funds raised will directly support the Vernon Public Art Gallery’s yearround mission to connect the community through engaging, accessible visual art experiences. We are honored by the overwhelming support for this year’s event and look forward to continuing this vibrant tradition for years to come.

PERMANENT COLLECTION: FEATURED ARTIST Artist Spotlight: Briar Craig We’re proud to highlight Briar Craig this month as one of the talented artists featured in our Permanent Collection. A dedicated educator and artist, Briar has played a key role in mentoring the next generation of printmakers. His recent work with UBCO printmaking students helped bring HOT OFF THE PRESS to life—an exhibition showcasing fresh, bold work from emerging artists. Briar's commitment to both the craft and the community continues to leave a lasting impression. Artist Bio: Briar Craig received a BFA in printmaking from Queen’s University, Kingston, ON, Canada in 1984 and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada in 1987. Starting in 2009, he initiated and co-organized the Okanagan Print Triennial in conjunction with the Vernon Public Art Gallery and the Kelowna Art Gallery. From OPT 2015 onward the exhibition has been fully international. His work has been exhibited around the world in over twenty-five solo and over two-hundred and fifty group exhibitions. Works are held in the permanent collections of the International Print Triennial Association in Krakow, Poland; the Istanbul Museum of Graphic Arts, Istanbul, Turkey; Purdue University Galleries, West Lafayette, Indiana; the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada; the Japan Print Association, Yokohama, Japan; Guanlan International Print biennial, Guanlan, China; Penang State Art Gallery, Penang, Malasia; etc. His prints have been awarded a number of prizes: the Stand Out Prize at Stand Out Prints 2016 at the Highpoint Center for Printmaking (Minneapolis, MN); Merit Award Winner, America’s 2014 all media exhibition (Minot, ND); the Juror’s Selected prize at the 2013 North American Print Biennial (Boston MA); Honorable Mention at the Pacific Rim International print Exhibition 2013 (Christchurch, New Zealand); 2nd Prize at Imprima 2012 (Sobral, Brazil); 2nd Prize Winner (one of his students achieve first prize) at the Open Studio Canadian Printmaking Awards (Toronto, Canada) and Special Prize Winner at the 1st International Print and Painting Biennial 2008 (Istanbul, Turkey). He has held positions as Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Minnesota, Morris campus (1987 – 1991); Assistant and Associate Professor at Okanagan University College (1991 – 2005); he is currently a Professor at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus (2005 – present) in Kelowna, BC, Canada. Artwork can be rented for a minimum of 3 months up to a maximum of 12. It’s a great option for your business or home and enables you to change up your art for the seasons to try before you buy. Rental fees vary based on the value of the work and may be considered a taxdeductible business expense. To rent an artwork, stop by the gallery to view our current selection and our gift shop attendant will be happy to assist you. Local artists that would like to submit their artwork to the art rental program, please send submissions to info@vernonpublicartgallery.com. All submissions will go through a juried selection process within the gallery. Not all submissions will be accepted.

What is it? Crit Club at VPAG is a dynamic, hands-on program that invites high school students to engage in meaningful workshops and critique sessions with established professional artists. Each session is designed to provide valuable insights into the creative process while encouraging peer interaction, artistic growth, and self-expression.

With expert guidance from professional artists, access to a supportive community of peers, and the chance to showcase their work at VPAG, students will have the opportunity to grow as artists and gain valuable experience in a realworld setting. Whether you’re just beginning your artistic journey or looking to push your skills further, Crit Club offers a safe space to explore, create, and thrive.
EDUCATION PROGRAMS REGIONAL REACH Regional Reach is a traveling art education program designed to meet the needs of our schools, senior centres and family service organizations in the outlying areas of Greater Vernon. The VPAG now has 2 circulating Regional Reach art kits that can be signed out. The kits include all the art materials and a detailed teacher’s guide with 10 cross curricular lessons.
FAMILY SATURDAYS
SCHOOL TOURS Our school program offers exhibition tours and hands-on art activities which complement and address the visual arts curriculum, in addition to cross-curricular connections to assist teachers, parents, and educators in developing an integrated approach to teaching. A new tour and workshop program is developed for the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer exhibitions, providing the opportunity for your class to visit our gallery at least four times each school year.
Family Saturday takes place on the last Saturday of each month with an art project suitable for little kids and big kids alike. Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate and create their own piece of art as well. All materials for the workshops are supplied. Suggested ages are 5 years old and up. $3-5 per person, and $10-14 for families with 4 or more members .
MINI ARTISTS Join us on the last Friday of every month for a diverse exploration of age-appropriate art activities. We invite parents and guardians to bring their little ones under the age of 5 to explore art making with nontoxic materials in this fun and social program. Admission is by donation.

We propose the creation of Artful Moments, a guided tour program designed specifically for seniors. These tours will offer a relaxed, accessible way for older adults to engage with the Vernon Public Art Gallery’s exhibitions. Tours will be paced gently, with seating and conversation encouraged throughout. The experience will emphasize connection—both to the artwork and to fellow participants. These tours aim to foster social engagement, stimulate curiosity, and make the gallery a welcoming space for seniors in our community.
