Harrisburg School District Celebrates 125 Years of Tiger Pride

JOANNE VERMULM HARRISBURG, SD - The Harrisburg School District will celebrate 125 years of Tiger Pride during the 2018/19 school year. A series of events will be organized to commemorate this special occasion, culminating in an allschool reunion during Harrisburg Days 2019. If you have historical photos or items from your time in the district, please contact JoAnne VerMulm at 743-2567 to share them. A scan can be made of photos and items can be displayed on loan. With the district’s extreme growth in the past couple of decades, you may find the following excerpt amusing as a Lincoln County historical book provides a glimpse into past growth surges. “The

Harrisburg was built in 1894. A group of local supporters petitioned the County Superintendent of Schools to detach a portion of District No. 48, 44, 28 & 57 to form a new school district known as District No. 81. The first school board consisted of S.D. Kenyon, J.L. Kehm, E. J. Hart. The first teacher was Miss Maud Brown. Due to growing population an additional school was built in 1901 and high school was included in the course of study. May Davis, who taught the first six grades, was the first teacher in this new school. Professor Herbert Brown had the six upper grades. In 1908 a brick building was constructed. Only the lower floor was used at this time. Estella Beck Perry and Gena Haug were the first teachers. Kathryn Sutton and Mariam Gauld were the first girls

Harrisburg Middle Schools Welcome 6th Graders With Event to Kick-Off the New School Year Fun, Friends and FOOD
In 1938 a proposed addition was voted upon. It was to include a gymnasium-auditorium and two additional classrooms. The second floor of this addition had a student assembly and library. Three bus routes were set, the buses being drawn by horses at first. Enrollment in 1939 was 93 in high school and 85 grade school pupils. In 1952 the high school (9-12) had 71 students and the elementary school had 108 students. In 1956 plans were made for additional classroom space. On December 12, 1956, the voters
of the Harrisburg School District voted to pass a bond issue [for] elementary classrooms. The facility was completed and students occupied the new addition by August 1957. In 1969 plans were made by the school board to ask the voters to approve a bond issue for a new high school. The issue passed and the facility was completed and occupied by students in August 1973. In 1979 plans were made by the school board for additional space for elementary, junior high, science and dining room facilities. The facility was ready for student occupancy by August 1980. As of August 1983 the school is growing rapidly with a K-12 enrollment of 569 pupils.” See a timeline of the district’s growth on Pages 6.tv

Harrisburg School District will now follow suit with many other school districts in the state and use an online-only platform for parents to complete the required annual information update for their children. Previously, a lengthy packet of paper was required to be completed at the beginning of each year for health, technology, and demographic information for each student in the family. Now, a small investment of time in parents’ Infinite Campus portal accounts will save a lot trees and hand cramps in the future. The update should be completed on a
computer - not a mobile device. Visit the district website to get the link to the portal account and for quick and easy instructions. If you are unsure of your username or password or if you need an account created, contact Jean Hudson in the district office at 743-2567 extension 3010. The annual update MUST be completed prior to open houses in August. If you do not have access to a computer, you can stop by the district office from 8am - 4pm Monday - Thursday.

Good Earth State Park at Blood Run August Events JEN NUNCIO PARK NATURALIST With Summer winding down the park is getting ready to switch gears. August is hopping with events and fun programs. The park is open to hikers and picnickers as well. Have you seen the movie and exhibit yet? Good Earth State Park is open year round for visitors. On Friday August 3rd we will have a fun summer campfire. The interns are getting ready to leave so this will be one last big event with all of them leading the fun. Learn some fun games, snacks and more starting at 6:00 p.m. Then on Sunday August 5th there will be a plant ID hike at 1:00 p.m. The prairie is full of 6 foot tall grasses and tons of colorful flowers. Now is your chance to learn what grows at the park. Our last Family Fun night will be Thursday August 9th. From 5:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. we will have several yard games set up for you to learn and enjoy. We
will have crochet, bocce ball and more. Then on Sunday August 11th we will have a Meteor Shower Party. Starting at 10:00 p.m. visitors will make their way along a lit path to the overlook decks to learn about the night sky. Stations of constellations, the telescope and meteor gazing will be on the overlook decks. This is the peak of the Persied Meteor showers and an evening in the park is always wonderful. Be sure to wear good walking shoes and bug spray. Sunday August 12th is all about the fish of South Dakota. Starting at 2:00 p.m. you can learn how to identify and catch the fish in our state. There will be games and casting practice as well. Calling all teachers! Sunday August 19th the evening is for you! From 5:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. teachers and school staff can come out to the park to see what Good Earth State Park has to offer. From our outreach options to educational experiences, you will be able to explore the visitor center and park. We will have door prizes and snacks available.
Food Pantry Accepting Garden Produce Do you have extra produce from your garden this summer? Feel free to drop it by the Food Pantry on Tuesday evenings and the first and third Thursday mornings. The Food Pantry could use coffee, tea, canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins and tissues. Food donations can be dropped at the pantry during normal hours of operation, left in the donation box in front of the building or dropped
at Meraki Salon on Willow Street in Harrisburg. Monetary donations are a wonderful resource for the Pantry. It enables us to stock items that are in short supply. Donations can be mailed to the Harrisburg Area Food Pantry, PO Box 456, Harrisburg, SD 57032. Special arrangements can be made by calling (605) 929-0599. Mark your calendars for Labor Day weekend activities. Saturday September 1st will be our Monarch Tagging program. Meeting at our new amphitheater, we will learn all about these amazing insects’ lives and how to identify and tag them before they head to Mexico. There will also be a Monarch Maze for visitors to experience what it is like to be a butterfly. Great for all ages! Sunday September 2nd there will be a photo scavenger hunt from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Stop in the visitor center to pick up your scavenger hunt sheets before capturing the pictures required. There will be prizes for all who participate. Monday September 3rd we will wrap up the weekend with some Dutch Oven cooking. Starting at 2:00 p.m. we will prepare dishes over a campfire inside a Dutch oven. All the supplies and materials will be provided, along with samples of course. Who is “We”? MAYOR JULIE VANLUVANEE
I really struggled with this month’s column. I started out with the “back to school” excitement that comes with the month of August; but Adrienne’s questions from last month of, “Who are we?” and “Who do we want to be?” kept lingering in my mind. My first struggle with those questions was, “Who is ‘we’”? I have used this column as an opportunity to layout the characteristics of a community, share Harrisburg’s accomplishments, relay decisions being made by community leaders, challenge residents to find their purpose and use their given talents and passions to improve our community. This, of course, is assuming that everyone who happens to reside in Harrisburg actually wants to be part of the community. Our houses of worship, close-nit neighborhoods, people who make and deliver food when new babies arrive or a dear friend has fallen ill, or anyone who follows school activities does a great job of demonstrating “we.” It’s that feeling of belonging; that feeling of pitching in when needed; that reward of feeling good about yourself for helping others or accomplishing something. The definition of “we” from the Merriam-Webster dictionary is: “I and the rest of a group that includes me : you and I : you and I and another or others.” Nowhere do I interpret anything about “this applies to YOU, but not to ME,” or that one gets to jump in and out of the “group” when they feel like it, don’t agree with something, or it’s not convenient for them. When
I think of “we,” I believe most of us take a team approach, want to build a sense of community, or practice what John F. Kennedy is credited with the saying, “The rising tide lifts all the boats.” While it’s nice to think that we all want a small town, caring, and safe community, actions speak louder than words. Why are residents speeding on our residential streets? Why do some people think stopping at stop signs is optional for them? Why are people tearing others down on social media sites? Or expecting everyone else to do the work that benefits everyone? That’s not small town culture. That’s a selfish attitude where one feels laws don’t apply to them, that one is “too busy” and won’t re-prioritize for the sake of the future, or that keyboard courage is an acceptable way to disrespect others. That’s not, “we.” It is very important for each of us to realize that “Who do we want to be?” is reflective of who we are. If you aren’t willing to abide by laws, find the negative in everything, or Monday morning quarterback others’ decisions without even knowing the rules of the game, the reality is that you only get out if it what you put into it. And, as Henry Ford has said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Harrisburg is built on “we’s” and to keep it moving, we’re going to need more. Which type of thinker are you? Are you part of “we” or are you not? Tough question. I challenge you to answer it personally and privately. Then decide what you’re going to do about it.

Big Sioux Youth Volleyball League Coming to a Gym Near You KAYE DESLAURIERS HARRISBURG - On March 22, 2018, Big Sioux Youth Basketball League, Inc. announced the inception of the Big Sioux Youth Volleyball League. Set to begin play this fall at facilities in the Harrisburg School District, Big Sioux Youth Volleyball (BSYVL) is open to girls who will be in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade this fall. Following the success of Big Sioux Youth Basketball, which began in 2007, and to further grow the sport of volleyball in the state of South Dakota, this youth volleyball program has just recently come to fruition in Harrisburg and its surrounding area.
Lawn & Garden Irrigation Best Practices
Lawns and gardens typically only require an inch of water per week. A thorough soaking which penetrates the soil is better than several short watering intervals which merely water the top of the ground. Watering the top of the soil is actually detrimental to the growth of your lawn. If can encourage unwanted disease and weed growth. If you haven’t installed a rain sensor for your irrigation system, do so. The cost of a sensor is
about $50.00. You can recoup this cost rather quickly if your irrigation system comes on during a rain storm once or twice. Any excess water that your irrigation system applies during a rain event will simply run off your yard and down the gutter.

City of Harrisburg Water Restrictions are in effect year round. Watering restrictions apply to the sprinkling, watering, or irrigating of lawns. Trees, shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens may be watered as needed. Failure to abide by these restrictions will result in up to a $200.00 fine. Currently we are at a Level 2 Restriction which limits watering or irrigating of yards to 2 days per week using the last digit of your physical address. Water use shall occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m.

Should the level of restriction change, notification will be done by the following methods: city website, Tiger Times publication, and on your monthly water billing. To establish a new lawn, new sod and seed watering permits are available for a one-time, two week period. The permit is $25.00 and can be obtained from City Hall. Please contact City Hall at 743-5872 in advance if you are interested in obtaining a permit.

The City of Harrisburg Compost Site is now open. Located at 801 S Prairie Street, the site is now accepting drop offs of permitted and acceptable compost items including: Leaves, grass, and similar vegetation as well as the following wood items: untreated scrap lumber, trees, tree branches, and brush. Weather permitting, the site is open Mondays and Wednesdays 5:15pm -7:30pm and Saturdays 8:00am -12:00 noon. The site cannot accept plastic or paper bags, even though they may be marketed as compostable or decomposable. The compost site is ONLY to Harrisburg residents: You MUST have a copy of your water bill to utilize the compost site. If you don’t have a copy of your water bill you may request one at City Hall during regular business hours.

Studies estimate that almost half of the water used in an average American household is for outdoor irrigation. Water wisely. Don’t bother watering after 10 AM or before 7 PM as the heat of the day will just dry out what you have applied, not to mention that it isn’t good for the grass or your plants and city ordinance does not allow watering between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Try not to water on days when the wind is blowing. The wind negates any benefits of lawn watering.
The sport of volleyball is defined as a game played by volleying an inflated ball over a net. However, to many young athletes nationwide, this sport is so much more. It’s a safe and fun place to spend time with friends while achieving a common goal. It’s an outlet to compete and learn from successes and failures. It’s an environment that encourages teamwork, cooperation, and perseverance.

Present-day Liberty has had several additions over the years, but this site housed all K-12 students in the Harrisburg District from 1908 until 2002. 1983 K-12 Student Population: 569
South Middle School - 2002 Although this building originally housed both Jr. and Sr. High students, a new high school was needed within a few years to accommodate the rapid growth of the community.
Explorer Elementary - 2005 This was the first building erected outside of Harrisburg city limits to accommodate the rapid growth of the district on the north end. 2005 K-12 Student Population: 1,234

Endeavor Elementary - 2013 The northwest corner of the district has continued to expand and as a result, a new elementary and middle school were needed to take pressure off of the other buildings.

Harrisburg High School - 2009 Since it’s opening in 2009 with approximately 425 students, HHS has expanded with the addition of more locker rooms, a weight room, expanded the theater, and an alternative school. Plans for future expansion are already in the works.

These students from North Middle School auditioned for, and were selected to participate in the Junior National Honors Choir this summer. They went to New York City for five days in June and were able to sing in Carnegie Hall along with about 200 other students going into 7th, 8th, and 9th grades from around the United States and from other countries.

The Harrisburg HS Debate team competed at the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament this past June. Eight students competed in the public forum and world schools debate categories. Grace Anderson and Ava Serfling Bennett competed with students from Sioux Falls Lincoln and O’Gorman as a united team in World Schools

and advanced from elimination rounds to make the triple octofinal round. The public forum team of Claire Tufty and Evan Papka also advanced from the six round preliminary portion of the tournament with a superlative 10 win - 2 loss ballot count. The team would eventually fall in round nine, marking the furthest an HHS team has gone at Nats since 2014.
The PF teams of Hayden Cole and Landon Dinger and Ben Menke and Victoria O’Connor each finished prelims with a 7-5 ballot count, one short of the 8 winning ballots to advance. Menke and O’Connor also competed in the consolation International PF tournament and went 3-1, with rounds against teams from China, Canada, and Korea.

HHS Volleyball Excited to Head Back to the Court
After claiming two back-to-back state championship titles, the Harrisburg Tigers Volleyball team is ready to get back into the gym to start the 2018 season. Officially, the volleyball season begins on August 9th, but the girls have been keeping busy in the off-season with team camps, open gyms, summer workout programs, and club teams to prepare for a successful season of their fall sport. Come cheer on the Tigers at their first game on August 23rd at Sioux Falls Roosevelt!
