QUALIFICATIONS? When you need to provide additional nourishment to your family, we are here to help. We require documentation showing you are from the Harrisburg area or have children in the Harrisburg School District. This could include a copy of your Driver’s License or a utility bill. You could also receive a referral form from a school counselor or social worker. Families can shop once every 60 days. Our shelves are color coded and the amount of food you receive is determined based on family size. We are a shopper’s choice pantry, meaning you choose the type of food your family will eat. ITEMS IN STOCK? We provide canned goods, personal care items, cleaning supplies, paper products, produce, meat, bread and dairy items, when available. In the summer, we typically have a large selection of produce. In the winter, we carry a wide selection of clean, gently used winter coats. We also have new winter hats/caps, scarves and gloves in a variety of sizes. In addition, we carry school supplies and backpacks. A voucher is provided to either HyVee or Sam’s BP to complement the food choices at our pantry. If you are 65 years or older, you may qualify for a Senior Box. Those are available once per month. WHAT IS NOT CARRIED? We do not offer used furniture or clothing, other than winter coats and item mentioned above. We cannot help
with rent, utility bills or immediate cash needs. There are other organizations that better fill those needs. However, we are sometimes aware of persons able to donate such items to you. Also, we may be able to point you in the right direction. For example, depending on your income, you may qualify for an Internet connection and phone land line for $9.95 a month. SOURCE OF FOOD? Generous donations are contributed or collected by several organizations such as the Boys and Girl Scouts, Postal Carriers, local churches, and local businesses. There are numerous individuals or organizations who bring in grocery, school or household items or make monetary donations on our behalf. Plus, we are affiliated with Feeding South Dakota and AmpleHarvest.org. OPEN? Normal hours of operation are the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and the 1st and 3rd Thursday from 10:00 am – noon. We are typically open two or more additional days per month. This changes based on need but is always noted on our Facebook page: facebook.com/ harrisburgfoodpantry. You can also inquire by calling (605) 929-0599. Harrisburg Water Restrictions City of Harrisburg Water Restrictions are in effect year round. Watering restrictions apply to the sprinkling, watering, or irrigating of lawns. Trees, shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens may be watered as needed. These restrictions are strictly enforced and failure to abide by them will result in up to a $200.00 fine. Currently we are at a Level 2 Restriction which limits watering or irrigating of yards to 2 days per week using the last digit of your physical address. Water use shall occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. If your address ends in: 0, 3, 6 - you may water on Monday and Thursday 1, 4, 7 – you may water on Tuesday and Friday 2, 5, 8, 9 – you may water on Wednesday and Saturday
Harrisburg Park Board Announcement The Harrisburg Park Board invites the residents of Harrisburg to attend the first annual National Night Out event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 on Main Street at Hugh Robinson Park. 2016-17 Athletic Physicals All students in grades 7-12 are required to complete an athletic physical to be eligible to compete in athletic events. An athletic physical is not required to compete in any activities other than sports. For instructions on registering for athletics and obtaining a physical, please follow this link https://harrisburghs-oar.rschooltoday. com/ and follow the outlined process. The physical must be dated after April 1, 2016 to be valid for 2016-17. A physical dated December 1, 2015 is not valid for the fall of 2016. Although a physical exam is not necessary to participate in summer workouts it is advisable to have it done early since the physical will be required to participate once the sports season has started. The best way to ensure that the physical is valid is to have it taken after April 1 each year. Beginning with the 2015-16 school year all students in grades 7-12 who play sports are required to take a baseline ImPACT test once every three years. All athletes were required to have one in

2015-16 and to ensure one baseline every three years going forward all 2016-17 incoming 7th graders and all incoming sophomores will need to take a baseline test. In addition new student athletes and those who did not participate last year will need to have a baseline regardless of grade.

Golfing FORE A Good Cause Tiger Nation Golf Tournament a success EVE BECKER
THE RANSOM CHURCH HAS A NEW HOME! Relaunching Late Fall 2016
On Sunday, June 12, 52 golfers participated in the Tiger Nation Golf Tournament held at Spring Creek Golf Course. The tournament featured 18 holes of best-ball golf with various events such as a putting contest, raffle for 4 all-day golf passes at The Prairie Club, and several pin prize contests. Golfers also enjoyed a grill out, sponsored by Darren Tipton of Adrenaline Fundraising. Other sponsors of the tournament included Bill Hoffman of Horace Mann Agency, Bill Christensen of Dakota Beverage, Steve Honner of Qdoba, Beal Distributing, Marlin’s Cafe, Sisson Printing, Topper’s, Dan’s Drugstore, McKinney Olson Insurance, Billion Southtown, Spring Creek Golf Course and Chad Hatch of The Prairie Club in Valentine, NE. Through these generous sponsors and golfers, the tournament raised $3,600 for Tiger Nation, an organization that recently awarded $30,000 to various extra-curricular activities in the Harrisburg District. Tiger Nation continues to build a strong and progressive reputation by providing money and opportunities for students in the community. This was the first year the tournament was held during Harrisburg Days, and tournament coordinators felt it was successful fundraiser for Tiger Nation. The goal for next year’s tournament is to have a full 36-team tournament with 36 hole sponsors. Tiger Nation hopes to gain additional support for this event from alumni and businesses in the district. The tournament will kick off Harrisburg Days next summer, with an 8am shot gun start on Friday, June 9, 2017 at Spring Creek Golf Course.

Harrisburg’s best sports day of the year will be on Saturday, September 10th, our annual Tiger Bowl! Tiger Nation’s volunteers will help our Girls Tennis, Volleyball, Boys and Girls Soccer teams and our Football Varsity entertain the community of Harrisburg. Events will begin at 9am with Girls Tennis vs Madison, Volleyball at noon vs. Huron, Boys and Girls Soccer games at noon vs Pierre all heading up to the evening highlight of Tiger Football vs. the Pierre Governors. The day will include youth football and cheer camps, a car wash, Carolan Rental inflatables, tiger wear sales, barbecue and more! Entrance to all events on September 10th will be collected by Tiger Nation and handed back to your students’ extra curricular activities in the spring. Please watch for a future sign up for volunteering for this day and show your support for the students in our district. Membership in Tiger Nation is easy, family memberships are as low as $50 and include two adult popcorn pins to grab a free popcorn at all home events. Members who join at the $150 rate and higher also earn a clothing voucher from Daubys Sports Center towards Tiger Nation gear. Family memberships who commit to the $250 annual rate earn a place on the Tiger Nation Donor Wall outside the high school gymnasium. High School Congratulations Ashlynne! AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY, HARRISBURG Alvin Dempewolf American Legion Auxiliary Unit 45, Harrisburg is proud to announce that Ashlynne Beninga; the daughter of Lori Ahrendt and Paul Beninga represented Harrisburg during the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State held in Vermillion the week of May 30th – June 4th. During Ashlynne’s time in Vermillion she learned about how the judicial system work and was elected a Mayor and the State Treasurer. She showed interest in going to American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington DC along with her counselor’s recommendation Ashlynne was on the list to be interview. Once interviewed the Sr Auxiliary members had to choose 2 girls to represent South Dakota in Washington DC at the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation at the end of July. We are PROUD to announce that Ashlynne was chosen as one of two Senator’s to represent South Dakota at American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington DC, this is a great honor and a once in a life time achievement.

Seeking Volunteers For Old MacDonald’s Farm TODD MARKS & TARA FASTERT, FFA ADVISORS Greetings All!! Hard to believe the 4th of July has come and gone and the summer of 2016 is past the halfway point. However, before summer is gone, we know that the Sioux Empire Fair will soon be here. For the 13th consecutive year, the Harrisburg FFA will be hosting the Old MacDonald’s Farm Petting Zoo at the fair. Old Mac’s Farm is a very popular part of the fair and it takes 20-25 volunteers each day to operate the barn efficiently. The FFA welcomes any and all volunteers! All FFA members are encouraged to work at least two, three-hour shifts at Old Mac’s. Incoming freshmen that are enrolled in Introduction to Agriculture class are encouraged to participate so they can get a head start on class and FFA activities. You do not need to be an FFA member to volunteer and all HHS and middle school students are welcome to volunteer and we will welcome the help. Volunteers at Old Mac’s will be asked to feed and water animals, clean stalls, hold puppies and kittens, distribute hand sanitizer, sweep floors, and many other tasks. Volunteers at Old Mac’s will get into the fair for free and FFA members will receive a T-shirt for their efforts. Parents and adult volunteers are also welcome and appreciated. If you are unable to volunteer but would still like to help, we are always looking for more animals. Kittens (10 weeks old or older), puppies, rabbits, chickens, geese, ducks, and any other common farm animals are welcome. Old MacDonald’s Farm will be open from August 6th through August 14th. Work shifts are 8am – 11am, 11am – 2pm, 2pm – 5pm, & 5pm – 8pm. We can use extra help after 6pm on Sunday, August 14th to tear down and clean up. South Middle School Meeting A President CALVIN CORBINE AND MAKAYLA ERICKSON, BOTH AGE 12, 7TH GRADERS AT SMS
Makayla’s Experience: Waiting for Bill to come out on stage was so exhilarating! While we were waiting, three musicians put on a mini concert for us. They played a few songs like “Up Town Funk”, “Don’t Stop Believing”, and many more. They also did a little bit of A Cappella. After the musical group got done, the Democratic US House candidate, Paula Hawks, walked on stage. She was an inspiration; she talked about how women’s rights have changed over the past years. She said that it was amazing that there was a lady on the moon. Paula also said that she was happy to announce that the 44 male president streak is over. After Paula spoke, Mayor Mike Huether came out to speak. The mayor was talking about how good of a president Bill Clinton was and that if Hillary is as good as her husband, she is the best choice. After the mayor went off the stage, then the former US Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin came out. She was an amazing speaker, you could tell she was very well prepared. She talked about when former president Bill Clinton was president and how when times got hard, Hillary was there to calm Bill and get him back on track. She also expressed how Hillary has wisdom behind her choices and how Hillary always gets things done on time and very efficiently. After her motivational speech she introduced Bill Clinton!
Calvin’s Experience:
When Bill came up on stage, the whole crowd screamed like we were at a Taylor Swift concert! Bill was the most moving speaker and had his heart set on his speech! He said how much of a leader Hillary is and would be for our country and how she helped him on this crazy life journey.
Who knew that having dinner with my Great Grandma would result in me meeting the most important man in the world for eight years?! It all started when my mom and I were eating dinner with my Great Grandma and talking about how Bill Clinton was coming to Sioux Falls. My mom and I thought that it would be pretty incredible to meet a President and decided to research his events in town. We discovered that Bill Clinton was coming in two days! I told my mom that I really wanted to go! On Friday, we got up at 6:00 A.M. and arrived at the District at 7:45 A.M., we were the 10th people in line. The people we were waiting behind had arrived at 4:00 A.M.! We waited for about two and a half hours before they let us into the building, there were a lot of news crews taking pictures. When we got in, we quickly scoped the area and saw where the stairs off of the stage were and grabbed our front row spot against the gates. We waited for another two hours listening to a really cool band, the Dueling Duo, and all of our local politicians making opening statements and then finally, Bill Clinton, the former President of the United States walked up on stage! He spoke passionately about many things but what stuck with me most is when he said “We need to build a bridge, not a wall”. Once he finished with his speech, he walked right to us! The very first thing he did is to walk towards us and we felt people starting to shove their way towards him, the gates actually moved forward! The Secret Service started pushing the gates back and then Bill Clinton shook my hand and let my mom take multiple pictures of us! I thought Bill Clinton seemed incredibly intelligent and really interesting to listen to. We were the first people who got to take pictures with him and we got some really good ones! Once we were finished and he moved on, we walked out of the building and saw tons of cameras! They were all trying interview us! Once we got home, we looked at the pictures and realized that this was probably one of the most memorable moments of our lives; it will definitely be something I never forget. We still can’t believe that having a conversation over dinner with my great grandma led to this!
