I know it’s only February, but I can already tell you that 2016 is going to be an exciting year in Harrisburg! With home building and population growth that doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, new and expanding businesses on the horizon, and some other great developments in the works, this is an exciting time to be a part of the Harrisburg community. It takes a lot of people and many different entities working together to create and maintain a vibrant community. As president of the Harrisburg Economic Development Corporation and Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce, I am proud to call Harrisburg my home and to share with others why Harrisburg is a great place to live and do business. I also recognize that communication is one of the greatest challenges our community faces, so I want to use this monthly column to give you a glimpse into what your HEDC/Chamber is doing for you and how we can all work together to make Harrisburg even better. Let’s start with some of the more traditional Chamber activities. In 2016, we will once again sponsor the Easter Eggstravaganza, the Business Trick or Treating, the Business Expo, and Breakfast with Santa. Maybe you never realized that these fun community activities are sponsored by the local businesses who belong to the Chamber, but without the generous support of our local member businesses, these community events wouldn’t happen. So the next time you stop into one of our local merchants, thank them for their contributions to ensuring we have fun, no-cost, family-friendly activities in our community.
And keep an eye out for the dates for each of these events. The Easter Eggstravaganza will be next month! As for what’s new in 2016, I want to share an exciting update that has been many years in the making. Three years ago, while serving on the City Council, I had the opportunity to represent the people of Harrisburg on a committee exploring the possibility of establishing a new Catholic church in our community. I’m so excited to share that now is the time! Thanks to the visionary leadership of Father Chuck Cimpl at Holy Spirit Church in Sioux Falls, we are going to establish a “satellite parish”, so to speak, to get a Catholic parish off the ground in Harrisburg. I invite you to join us as we meet for our first celebration of the Mass at 6:00 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, February 10th. We will meet in the Performing Arts Center at the Harrisburg High School, and then we will regularly celebrate the Mass each Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the same location. The hope is that as we start meeting as a parish community, we will start to form committees to explore the next steps of finding land, building a church, establishing a Religious Education program, and more. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to serve at one of the upcoming Masses, please either contact me, or give Father Chuck or Kathy Davis a call at Holy Spirit. And please spread the word and invite your friends and neighbors to join us. All are welcome! This is just the beginning of what is to come in Harrisburg this year. We have a vibrant, growing community, and with all of us working together, we can only grow stronger! I look forward to sharing more with you each month and keeping you informed about what’s happening in our community.

Special Census On April 1 The City of Harrisburg is working with the US Census Bureau to perform a special census on April 1. The purpose of this special census is to determine if the City has over 5,000 residents. By showing that we have over 5,000 residents we become a Class 1 City under South Dakota law and become eligible to receive an annual allocation of highway funds from the state Department of Transportation. We intend to use these funds for major projects such as adding turn lanes and traffic control signals at the Cliff Avenue and Willow Street intersection. Your cooperation and participation in this special census is very important to all of us!!! Drug Collection Box Available In Sheriff’s Harrisburg Area Food Pantry Neighbors Helping Neighbors Lobby The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office recently purchased a Prescription Drug Collection Box that will be permanently located in the lobby at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office located at 128 N. Main Street in Canton. The lobby will be open during business hours. Lincoln County citizens now have a safe and convenient way of disposing of unwanted or expired prescription drugs. There is no cost associated with the drop off, nor questions asked. Each properly disposed of item reduces contamination in our water system, alleviates potential for accidental overdose or ingestion of outdated or incorrect medication. This initiative is part of an effort to prevent the increasing problems of prescription drug abuse and theft that continues to occur nationwide. The following accepted:

Important - Harrisburg Consumer Water/ Updated City Ordinances Take Effect City Council and staff have spent the last year reviewing and updating Sewer Bills The following ordinance will be enforced and payment arrangements on utility bills will no longer be honored. All utility water/sewer bills are due on the twentieth (20th) day of the month. If bills are not paid by the due date, a twenty (20) percent penalty shall be assessed the following day. If a bill for utility services is not paid in full the customer shall be given notice by mail or by personal service by posting on the property that service shall be terminated within five (5) working days of the date of posting. Failure to pay all charges and penalties will result in disconnection of services. All utilities disconnected for nonpayment must pay a reconnect fee plus payment in full of the amount owed on the account before any utilities will be reconnected. Reconnections will be made only during business hours, 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday thru Friday.

The updates include elimination of noise permits, changing the City’s adopted building codes to the 2015 International Building Codes, revising the vicious animal investigation process, and extending the effective life of pet licenses from 1 year to up to 3 years to match the period of protection provided by new rabies shots. The City Park Board Needs Members The City Park Board is seeking two community residents to serve on the Board. The Park Board meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Liberty Elementary School Board Room at 200 E. Willow Street. The Park Board advises the City Council on maintenance and development of City parks, green space, and trails. Members serve threeyear terms and are appointed by the Mayor with City Council approval. The Park Board is currently working on the design and construction of the new Central Park, funding and design of a skateboard park, the first City Arbor Day event, a bike rodeo, a new season of gardening in the Grand Gardens, improvements to existing City parks, and construction of new multi-use trails. Elementary SPA (grades K-5) is a two-week exploratory workshop full of activities such as creative dramatics exercises and theatre games. Students develop characters, create plays, and perform for each other on a daily basis. Also, on the last day there is a studentprepared public performance. Elementary SPA will be held in the little theater at Harrisburg High School.
Middle School SPA (grades 6-7) is a fourweek session focusing on drama, dance, and music. The focus of this program is process rather than product, so emphasis is placed on training. The end performance is a show and tell of what they have learned throughout the session. Middle School SPA will be held at North Middle School.

Showplace Creates Showcase For HHS THANK YOU, SHOWPLACE! The new trophy cases down the hallway to the locker rooms at Harrisburg High School are underway thank to the generous donation of Showplace Wood Products! Along with more athletic record boards ordered, Tiger Nation will also purchase needed glass and shelving to complete the trophy cases as our promise to the district for the 2015-16 school year. The Blue Ribbon Committee of Joey Struwe, Coach Brandon White, Coach Ronette Costain, Diane Slaughter and Vicki Lanier is pleased with the progress on these projects. This committee is still looking for more donated items to complete the trophy case displays. Calling all Tiger alumni, if you wore it, cheered in it, competed with it, whether in athletics, fine arts, or music and are willing to donate it for display, we want it! Please drop any donated items to the high school office with your name, graduation year and phone number. Also, if you are interested in assisting decorating these new trophy cases, please reach out to a committee member. Tiger Nation, in assistance with the sponsors of this event, will purchase the youth javelins, shot puts, discusses, etc needed for our own elementary and middle school buildings so Harrisburg youth can prepare in gym class before the competition. Harrisburg Flag Football Position Open Harrisburg Flag Football is in search of an Executive Director to coordinate and grow this community-focused kids program. This February, Harrisburg HOSA is staying busy in preparation for the fast approaching state competition at the end of March. Most importantly, students will be taking their round one test(s) February 22nd. For some competitors, these tests are vital to qualifying for nationals if one scores well enough. For others, their entire event culminates in this test. A few examples of competitive events that include a round 1 test include CPR/ First Aid, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, HOSA Bowl, Forensic Medicine, Sports Medicine, Nursing Assisting, and Clinical Nursing, just to name a few. Other major events in February include the monthly meeting on February 1st and Science Saturday on February 27th.
American Legion Presents Teacher Of The Year Award JOANNE VERMULM Congratulations to Mr. Todd Marks, recipient of the Harrisburg American Legion Post 45 Educator of the Year award. Mr. Marks was presented with the award by Dean Axtell and David Gaard in front of an audience of students working in the shop. Mr. Marks has been with the Harrisburg School District for 33 years. The Harrisburg High School Speech and Debate team continued its season at the Sioux Falls Lincoln Silver Bowl tournament January 15 and 16. The team was led by varsity public forum debaters Grace Aasheim and Marisa Morris. They went 4-1 in preliminary rounds to advance to the semifinals before dropping a 2-1 decision. IN the JV division, Cody Schriever debated without a partner, called maverick, and also went 4-1 to finish in third place. The novice, first-year, debate team of Julia Hopes and Liz Ocegueda finished in second place. They went undefeated in prelims before dropping the final round. Two Harrisburg debaters received speaker awards for their outstanding performances. Jordann Krouse was the second ranked varsity speaker and Noah Bunger was the third rated novice speaker. In the speech part of the tournament, both Megan Simonich and Jordann Krouse competed in Honors Finals, with Megan receiving 5th place in novice oratory speaking and Jordann receiving 4th in international extemporaneous speaking. The team also competed at the Brookings Bell tournament right before the holiday break. The team was led by Evan Papka and Megan Yee going undefeated in JVPF to capture first place. Liz Ocegueda and Cole Teigan also went undefeated in the novice division but finished in second place based on speaker points. In the varsity division, Jordann Krouse and Claire Tufty finished with a 4-1 record in third place. Krouse also placed first in the international extemporaneous speaking.

Seventh and eighth grade students at North Middle School had the chance to learn more about life in Spain when they heard from a native speaker on Monday, December 21st. Guillermo del Rio Fernandez-LaBandera, a foreign exchanged student from Spain, is currently a student at Harrisburg High School. As a guest speaker in Spanish class, he answered basic questions in Spanish and talked about his life in Spain. Students had written questions for him beforehand and were interested in knowing how life in South Dakota was different than in Spain, what stereotypes he had of Americans (and if they were true), and what some of his favorite things to do were. He told stories and anecdotes about learning English and living in Harrisburg. He spoke highly of his host family and Midwesterners in general and is enjoying his time as a Tiger. Students enjoyed the chance to hear him talk about life as a teenager. Thanks for speaking, Guillermo!
There are many important Fine Arts events coming up in the next few months. On February 22nd, the North Middle School choir will be having their Pops Concert. North’s show choirs--collectively called Refractions--will also perform that night. We have two show choirs, a Monday/Wednesday group and a Tuesday/Thursday group. Both show choirs are performing different Motown melodies. There will be three competitions, all in March. Our first competition is on March 5th in Sioux City, the second will be on March 11th at Washington High School and the season ends March 19th in Mitchell. North’s Jazz Band, “The Northerners,” have begun practicing a blues scale and preparing for upcoming concerts and jazz festivals. The North Middle School has sent out ten kids for Middle School All-State Band. We are glad to present Megan Holden(8th), Reese Anderson(8th), Grace Anderson(7th), Stewart Nickel(7th), and Emily Shields(8th), all of which have made it into Middle School All-State Band. The Middle School AllState Band will be performing in Pierre, South Dakota on March 5. These are some of the Fine Art events coming up in the near future.

South Middle School
SMS Walks In The Woods With Drama ZOEY MAGER, 6TH GRADE
“I loved it! It was very funny!” Hadley Marquardt (student at South Middle School, also a fan of the play) The Harrisburg South Middle School performed a play titled “A Walk in the Woods” by Debbie Metzler. The Producers were Darren Ellwein, Ryan Hutchinson, Kip McKee, and Aaron Weaver. The Directors were Louise Perrion, Randi Van Der Sloot, and Kara Youngworth. The play had a mix of childhood stories from “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” to “Hansel and Gretel.” There was a malfunction during the performance, but the students helped out and stalled. “Just keep going and act like nothing ever happened!” exclaimed Kara Youngworth, so we did. The play was practiced every Monday and Wednesday, sometimes even extra days. “I loved working on and in the play! It was very fun and exciting around every corner! It was fun!” said Ella Bergsmith (who played baby bear.) We are eager to see what SMS does for next years’ play!
South Middle School Show Choir LAUREN BASTEMEYER, 8TH GRADE This is about Novum Voce which means new voice, this is what the South Middle School Show Choir is called. In Novum Voce we had been working our songs for the show “Cruisin.’” Our songs are “Car Wash,” Drive My Car,” and “Maps.” At our first retreat we worked on one song, this song is called “Car Wash.” We had a Novum Voce retreat so we could learn the choreography to the song. We had a neon theme, and we also had taco bar, it was so delicious. At our second retreat we worked on learning the choreography for “Maps.” At this retreat our theme was Ugly Christmas Sweaters. Our last retreat is in January and we will learn the choreography for “Drive my Car.” Our show choir will have a concert in March and will compete at “Best of Show” at Washington High School in March. We will go on an elementary tour to Liberty and Freedom in the spring. Our group practices two times a week before school. I am so excited to be a part of Novum Voce this year. It is a combination of two thing I love singing and dancing. I am also excited for the songs that we are doing they come from many different genres and eras. In Novum Voce we are a family who has a special bond and when someone needs help or a hug or anything we know we can count on our Novum Voce family. We will be the new voice that represents Harrisburg South Middle School.

Genius Hour: A 7th Grade Learning Experience 7TH GRADE TEAM The 7th grade students at South Middle School were introduced to Genius Hour on Wednesday, December 2. The one hundred sixteen students gathered in the commons area with their teachers and administrators to kick off this learning experience. The students viewed a couple of inspirational videos including one about a group of young boys creating their own soccer team, and another about being the individual who challenges what they know so they can learn more about the world and themselves. Genius Hour is a concept which encourages students to find their passion, and to take the time to research their passion. While in the commons, the students worked together to brainstorm different topics they were interested in learning about during the Genius Hour time. The students were encouraged to make a connection between a chosen topic and making the world a better place. There were seven categories the students sorted their ideas into. They included technology, science/ health, art/music/literature, construction/design, school improvement, community service, and other. The students wrote ideas on sticky notes and stuck them all over the walls. Once the students finished brainstorming
ideas, advisories walked around together in a gallery-walk style activity to view the different ideas and discuss what had been brainstormed. The 7th graders will be given one hour each week to research a passion of their choice. They will use this time to plan, research, make contacts outside of the school, and develop an end product or display they will share with the school. The students have the option to work with a partner on this learning opportunity, or they may choose to work individually. It is important for students to take ownership in their learning. Genius Hour provides students with this chance to go above and beyond their regular classroom expectations and challenge themselves to discover what is important to them. Final displays will be shared with the students and staff at South Middle School on Thursday, March 24. Each student or pair of students will display the learning outcomes for the research completed. This time will allow others to come view and ask questions about the displays so they can learn more as well.
Students Wasting School Supplies: How Can We Improve? ISABEL ROTH It is well known students from all over the United States are getting rid of many of their school supplies each school year. What some parents and children alike do not know is that the money students waste each year from this mass disposal adds up to be quite a lot of money. But the real question here is, why is this occurring, and how much money could citizens save? Members of Harrisburg, SD’s Tiger Robotics conducted an experiment to see what is really going on. They sent out a survey to the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders of Harrisburg South Middle School to see what they had thrown away going from one school year to the next. Their studies revealed approximately 77.91% of the 86 seventh grade students who took the survey claimed they had reused school supplies they had bought for sixth grade the year before. However, 92.27% of the 194 students who partook in the survey threw away some school supplies, be it their trapper keeper, or a backpack full of materials. When considering how expensive school supplies can be, that is a lot of money saved. But with the solution the all-girls division of Tiger Robotics came up with, the community can easily raise those numbers and achieve new goals. The solution is simple: set up a series of donation boxes to allow students to deposit their used school supplies at the end of the day. This will ensure at least two things. For one, students will be donating supplies to the local Harrisburg Food Pantry, where they will be given to other students who need them. And if they are not accepted into the Pantry, teachers can keep the supplies for their classrooms each year. Either way, the unused school supplies would go to a good cause. When prompted, students from Harrisburg South Middle School have revealed their own thoughts on the matter. In summary, they are claiming that they, too, threw out their old and/or used school supplies, but believe this is a serious enough matter we can solve. In greater detail, their solution to this dilemma was to set up a series of boxes sorted either by price of the item or grade level. There would not be a lot of technology involved in this project, the only major one being an app for tablet devices the team would create and design with the help of
their mentors. Said app would have a display showing about how many school supplies were donated total (inputted by a parent and/or teacher volunteer), as well as, possibly, the total approximate amount of money donated through the school supplies. There could also potentially be a TV screen displaying the data, which could also show our goals, and if they reached them. Otherwise, there would be a point system set up as a form of currency. The volunteers would write down the amount of points the students would receive (the amount or points dependent on each item), which they could turn in for prizes. Currently, they plan on purchasing 600 prizes, all of which include sticky hands, bouncy balls, various porcupine characters, and slinkies. Tiger Robotics looks to raise around $130 to purchase the prizes, so they would appreciate donations and/or sponsors. So, how can you help to donate supplies to students in need and save money yearly for both teachers and students? Partake in and use the donation system Tiger Robotics has planned for students in the Harrisburg, SD district, and, in the future, farther out.
Freedom Elementary Coding MS. VYHLIDAL, MS. SIMONETT, MS. GACKE With the help of the technology integrationist, Mr. Knips, second grade students learned how to program and run games through coding. The coding was done through Tynker. Tynker is a website that provides interactive exercises, tutorials, and fun tools to create coding instructions in popular games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, Frozen, and many others.

With this website no experience or training is necessary because it is a self-paced program fit to each child’s learning ability. It incorporates the importance of computer science and is a great way for children to learn programming in a fun and imaginative way!
Research Reports FREEDOM FIRST GRADERS The first graders at Freedom Elementary have been learning how to write a research report. They chose an animal of interest to read about from a book. They are learning how to take notes, write a rough draft and a final copy. We also are going to incorporate technology into this unit of study
by having the students research another animal by using the San Diego Zoo website. They will then create a PowerPoint slide to show where the animal lives, what it eats, its predators, what the animal looks like, and some interesting facts about the animal. Our students LOVE to write, especially when they get to use our technology!
Liberty Elementary A Special Gift AMANDA MAROHL Instead of bringing presents this year for each other, 5M at Liberty Elementary decided to do something very special for children in the area. Together, we made 13 beautiful tie blankets for Project Linus. This is a charity that accepts newly made fleece blankets and distributes them to children in need. Blankets are collected locally and distributed to children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in need of a BIG hug. This was made possible through the generous monetary donations from the families in 5M. We were able to complete the blankets during an allotted time slot during the school day, with tremendous assistance and help from parent and adult volunteers. We couldn’t have made all 13 blankets in 1.5 hours without them – THANK YOU! Students were invited to join me at the drop-off location in Sioux Falls one evening. We met with the South Dakota Project Linus director, Giselle, and learned that our blankets will be donated to the Children’s Hospital in Watertown, SD. We really enjoyed learning how to make tie blankets, working together as a class, and ultimately giving other children a chance to receive an extra warm hug, if they needed one! It feels awesome to help other people!
