The Harrisburg City Compost Site located at 801 S Prairie Street – Harrisburg Maintenance Facility will be open Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., weather permitting. Please do not leave your bags by the gate if it is closed. Only items allowed at this site are branches, grass clippings, and leaves. No plastic bags or garbage! Absolutely no other materials! This is not a dump site and those caught dumping would be in violation and turned over to the authorities. There is the possibility of closing the site for everyone if the rules are not followed.

Harrisburg Community Food Pantry Neighbors Helping Neighbors The Harrisburg Community Food Pantry is a faith based outreach serving Harrisburg and the surrounding area. Generous donations are contributed or collected by several organizations such as the Boys and Girl Scouts, Postal Carriers, local churches, and various organizations within the school district. Whether you’ve recently been downsized, are otherwise temporarily unemployed, or are experiencing economic challenges, we are here to help. You will need your Driver’s License and two forms of ID showing you are from the Harrisburg area. Any use of available resources will be held in the strictest of confidence. Hours of operation are from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month or by appointment. You can always reach us at (605) 9290599. As our community grows, we will continue to experience increased need for the food pantry. Local Food Pantry Joins AmpleHarvest.Org AmpleHarvest.org, a nationwide program, enables home and community gardeners to donate excess harvest directly with their local food pantry thereby helping those in their own community. In August, the newly expanded Harrisburg Area Food Pantry joined this growing organization. A volunteer, Londa Vickerman, stated, “Fresh produce donations are important because of the increasing number of shoppers at our recently relocated facility. In addition, we provide food and services to children, who need the nutrition found in fresh fruits and vegetables.”

It Is Tree Trimming Time! MICHAEL MCMAHON, PLANNING & ZONING ADMINISTRATOR Fall is the best time to trim trees and shrubs. Property owners are responsible for keeping overhanging branches cleared from the walkable area of sidewalks and the driving area of streets, as required by Chapter 6.0502 of Harrisburg Codified Ordinances. 6.0502 Duties of Property Owners. It shall be the duty of any person owning or occupying real property bordering on any street upon which property there may be shrubs or trees, to prune or remove such shrubs or trees in such manner that they will not obstruct or shade the street lights, obstruct the passage of pedestrians on sidewalks, obstruct vision of traffic signs, or obstruct view of any street or alley intersections, except where such services are provided for by utility firms. It shall also be the duty of such person to prune or remove shrubs or trees located in the street right-of-way adjacent to their property. Removal shall be required when such shrubs or trees are diseased, dead, of a prohibited species, or pose a safety hazard or nuisance. The person owning or occupying such real property shall be responsible for pruning shrubs and trees when they violate clearance requirements. The minimum clearance of any overhanging portion thereof shall be ten feet whenever practicable, and twelve feet over all streets except truck thoroughfares where the clearances shall be fourteen to sixteen feet, unless otherwise determined by the City Council. District New Teacher Luncheon TAMMY ADNEY On August 21st all the teachers that were new to the Harrisburg School District met at the high school for a new teacher in-service. On that day the Harrisburg Education Association served lunch for the new staff members. All new teachers were invited to stay for a catered meal from Riviera catering out of Sioux Falls. Mary McCorkle president of the South Dakota Education Association spoke to the new teachers about her teaching experiences in South Dakota. This was a wonderful opportunity for the new staff to visit and get to know each other a little bit as well as have a delicious meal.

Harrisburg Teachers Attend Woodlawn Educator Conference KATE HANSON AND KELLY ENEBO Several Harrisburg School District educators attended the Woodlawn Educator Conference on August 3 and 4, 2015. It was a two-day conference hosted by Celebrate Community Church in Sioux Falls. Woodlawn is based on an inspiring real-life story about love and unity in a school torn by racism and hate based during the 1970’s. The film follows Woodlawn High School football career of Tony Nathan and the impact he made the years following the Civil Rights Movement. The participants had the privilege of watching the director’s cut of the Woodlawn film in its entirety. The movie will be released to the public on October 16th. Conference participants took part in conversations integrating the Woodlawn film as the catalyst for discussion and learned how to utilize media as a resource for instruction in the classroom. Participants were K-12 educators, administrators, coaches, and counselors from across SD and surrounding states. The University of Sioux Falls offered a graduate credit for the participants. One of the speakers included the lead actor of the Woodlawn film, Caleb Castille. He commentated about the background of the movie, gave insight

about different scenes, shared his personal connection to Woodlawn High School, autographed footballs, and took pictures. The Harrisburg educators included in the conference were: Chase Hirt (Freedom), David Dohn (HS), Lisa Foreman (HS), Kelly Enebo (Liberty), Kate Hanson (Liberty), Tracy Bird (HS), Erika Kruggel (HS), Craig Imme (HS), and Kirsten Wiemann (SMS). Movie critics, Kelly and Kate, gave the movie two thumbs up!

Annual FFA Fruit Sales Coming Soon! TODD MARKS & TARA FASTERT, FFA ADVISORS Fall is in the air and winter will be here soon and this time of year is a reminder that the Harrisburg FFA will be once again selling fruit, cheese and meat sticks for our annual fundraiser. Students will begin taking orders on Oct. 8th and forms need to be finished by Oct. 19th. The FFA Fruit sale is the major fundraising activity for our chapter and has been a successful tradition in Harrisburg for over 40 years. Fruits featured are navel oranges, red grapefruit, Washington pears, five varieties of apples and pineapple. We will also offer 5 different flavors of cheese spreads, 2 varieties of beef sticks and string cheese.

Proceeds from the fruit sales will be used to fund FFA community service projects, competitive teams, purchase materials for FFA CDE’s and activities, and help cover travel expenses for teams and members attending state and national conventions. In addition, our chapter is planning to start a scholarship program for FFA members. A percentage of the fruit sales proceeds will be used as seed money to begin this scholarship fund. HOSA Happenings ROSS LANIER – HOSA REPORTER In this month’s HOSA Happenings, many of the fall events are being planned and already starting. After our successful membership drive and Tiger Bowl 5k, this month starts off with our first official monthly meeting and our first Science Saturday. The member meeting was held on Monday, September 14th at 7 p.m. We are also beginning our monthly Science Saturdays, where we’ll be setting up science-themed workshops for students in 3rd through 5th grades. 2015 HHS Marching Band Ready For Competition JASON GROON Cooler temperatures and the start of the school year can only mean one thing in the world of a band student – It’s marching season! Preparation for the 2015 marching season began the second week of July, when the temperatures were anything but cool. Fifty-five students arrived at the high school for a two-week camp that included eight hours of rehearsal per day covering everything from marching fundamentals to drill and music preparation. The show for this year is “Rain”. The show brings life to the unpredictable force of nature and takes the audience on an emotional journey through the storm. The program opens with the beauty and elegance of a gentle April rain. The second movement reminds that audience how playful rain can be, remembering a time when rain meant splashing in puddles, and “Singin’ in the Rain”. Finally, and without warning, the playful rain swells

into the full fury of the storm. Reaching its peak with a bolt of lightning and a crash of thunder, the intensity of the storm emerges and reminds viewers how unpredictable and untamable a storm is. After nearly 200 hours of rehearsal refining the show, the competition season is upon us! This year the HHS Marching Band is performing at the Pursuit of Excellence in Marshall, MN, the Big Sioux Review in Brandon, SD, the Festival of Bands in Sioux Falls, SD the Dutchmen Field Championship in Orange City, IA, and the Quad State Marching Festival in Vermillion, SD, as well as halftime of every home football game. The band members have been working hard and are looking forward to a great season!

HHS Band To Present Fall Concert JASON GROON On Monday, October 19th, the Harrisburg High School Band will present their Fall Concert at 7:00 PM in the Harrisburg High School Performing Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public. The concert will feature a selection of modern and classic wind band pieces to include Salvation is Created by Tschesnokoff (arr. Houseknecht), Robert W. Smith’s Inchon, Burn by Roland Barrett, Flourish for Winds by Gary Fagan, and Steven Reinke’s Heaven’s Light.

New Beginnings For Oral Interp JORDANN KROUSE The 2015 Oral Interpretation season is about to begin for Harrisburg’s Interp Team with some new additions. English teacher Mrs. Garets is the team’s newest assistant coach and says she excited to begin the season. In addition to Mrs. Garets, Harrisburg will be hosting their very own tournament here at the high school. Scheduled to be held on November 2nd, the Harrisburg Interp-o-rama will be the first of its kind. Teams from all over South Dakota will come and compete in various speech events such as Drama and Humorous Interp. Also brand new events will be added the Interp Program including Program, and Informative speech. The first tournament of the season,the Rough Rider Round Up Oral Interp Festival, is on October 10th. Students from all grades will show off their skills and destroy the competition. If you are interested in participating in Interp this year then contact Mr. Kurtz about getting started. North Middle School Get Your School Spirit On!

Coming Of Age In Eighth Grade

On Tuesday, September 8th North Middle School’s seventh grade volleyball teams played in Brookings, South Dakota. The volleyball players left at 1:55, and the Harrisburg Tigers left Brookings with three hard-fought victories and one loss against the Bobcats. The teams played hard and, having only gone to five practices beforehand, were remarkably well-organized and skilled in their endeavors to win against their also talented opponents. In all of the games, the teams battled vigorously. Head coach Mrs. Andrews says, “I was extremely pleased with how our girls came together and played in their first game. We had very little preparation before our first match, but the girls exceeded all of our expectations. They played with heart and energy. This is a very talented group of young ladies.” We should all take pride in these passionate and able representatives of Harrisburg North Middle School and the Harrisburg school district.

In Mrs. Olinger’s eighth grade advanced language arts class students are exploring the theme of coming of age. During middle and high school, teenagers go through many experiences that change their perceptions of the world and their own personalities. Through their exploration of coming of age, the students interviewed Mr. Fesler, the assistant principal of HNMS. They questioned him about his coming of age moment in a series of questions. He told them about a moment involving a light pole that changed his perspective forever. The students will continue their investigation on coming of age by interviewing parents or other adults who have been to college and learning about their coming of age experiences. North Middle School Looking For Volunteers For Tiger Stripes Celebrations TYLER SAVAGE Harrisburg North Middle School will once again be having quarterly Tiger Stripe Celebrations. At the end of each quarter students who have a 3.0 GPA will get to attend Tiger Stripes. Students can also be nominated by teachers for character, effort, and involvement. The Tiger Stripe team is getting ready to start planning this year’s celebrations. This year, we are looking for parents who would be interested in helping to set up, run, and clean up the celebrations. Tiger Stripes goes from 2:083:04, and will be held on October 30, January 15, March 11, and May 13. If you would be interested in helping in any way please email Tyler Savage at tyler.savage@k12.sd.us. Past events have included carnivals, dances, auctions, hypnotists, water wars, and grade level competitions. This year we are hoping to make the events even better and would love to get your input and help! More information will be sent out to interested individuals.

WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) KRISTA GROENEWEG AND KELLY ANDREWS We had a great start to the new year here at HNMS. Once again our 8th grade WEB leaders helped transition our sixth grade students into Harrisburg North MS. The 8th graders took two days out of their busy summers to come to a training that was led by Mrs. Kelly Andrews and Mrs. Krista Groeneweg. For the second day of training, the 8th graders stayed to help students/ parents the night of our orientation. The 8th graders greeted everyone with a smile, assisted in getting students/parents where they needed to go, and helped open up lockers. On the first day of school, a huge WEB celebration took place in honor of all of our incoming 6th graders. Later on the in the morning. the 8th grade WEB leaders led small groups of activities that helped the 6th graders get to know one another and helped them understand what middle school is all about. As always our WEB leaders did a great job. The sixth graders now have an 8th grade student they can look up to and go to with questions/ concerns. This morning the 8th graders went into the 6th grade advisory classrooms and did an activity on positive attitudes. The 8th graders will continue to connect with the sixth grade students through out the school year.

Eighth Grade Football At North Middle School RYAN PTAK, OWEN SCHWEITZER, REESE ANDERSON, MATHEW SWANSON Eighth grade football is in full swing this year with the team consisting of twenty-four boys. The team is coached by Mr. Cramblit and Mr. Noffsinger. Coach Cramblit coaches defense while Coach Noffsinger coaches offense. The HNMS Tigers’ first game was on September 8 at Brookings; the game was a success with the Tigers winning 16-0. Their next game, at home, was a Jamboree we hosted Mitchell, Yankton, and Harrisburg South on September 10. The Tigers played and beat Yankton in both games. The players worked well together to achieve this victory. Jack Rabern caught three touchdowns, Joquarri Price ran in a touchdown, Grant Tiede recovered a fumble for a touchdown, and Sam Christensen caught a thirty-yard pass to score a touchdown. Coach Cramblit provided information on how the team is developing so far; he said, “So far we’ve been playing very well. We had the one game in the jamboree. The guys are starting to pick up the offensive and defensive formations. North or nothing.” Hopefully those inspiring words encourage fans to come out and cheer on the eighth grade HNMS football team.

Students are asked by a variety of staff members: “Who do you owe?” “What do you owe?” “What do you need?” “How can I help?” Staff members re-teach content material and provide students with extra assistance to complete their work during directed studies, before school, during lunch, after school, etc. Names are removed from the ICU list when assignments are completed and quality work has been done.

Cross Curriculum In The 8th Grade KAYLA BRAFFET This year the 8 grade students at South will notice a trend among all their classes, the Holocaust. The 8th grade staff worked very hard last year and this summer to create a unit where every major subject (ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science) is related. To start off the school year, the 8th graders are diving into the Holocaust. In math class students are creating data entries that deal specifically with the Holocaust. One example is the country they are from, the camp they went to, gender and survivors. In ELA students are using the same website where they found their information for math class, but this time they are researching one specific victim and creating a concrete poem of their life. In social studies students will be having group discussions on how their current topic of oppression is similar to the Holocaust. We wanted to create this unit so students could see how the Holocaust and any unit we discuss in class can connect to any content. Hopefully this will show the true importance of the unit and help them connect units in the future. th

HSMS Encore FACS DEB ROMBOUGH – HSMS FACS TEACHER This year the 6th grade Encore FACS students have been learning about discovering their inner magic and learning how to develop a positive self-concept. We have been practicing positive self-talk and also encouraging others to identify their strengths and weaknesses and learn how to accept what can’t be changed and build on their skills and abilities. Going along with our theme, students completed the unit by developing an original “spell” /positive quote and made a magic wand to serve as a reminder to always be positive and promote to others.

Seventh Grade Volleyball Down South AMANDA OLINGER The gym is buzzing with energy and excitement as the seventh grade girls practice and prepare for their upcoming games. They have traveled allover South Dakota to compete against some of the best that this state has to offer in seventh grade. The girls first played Lennox on September 8 (‘A’ won and ‘B’ lost in three games), and then the Tigers traveled to Huron on September 10th where we lost in two hard-fought games (22-25, 23-25). We also have four classes in the Tiger Reserve. That is a total of 24 sections. Liberty has 456 students enrolled for the 2015-2016 school year! That is a lot of Harrisburg Liberty TIGERS!!!

Liberty Elementary wants to thank the Liberty PTO for the iPad cart that was purchased for our school. We truly appreciate EVERYTHING that the Liberty PTO does for our students, teachers and staff. Liberty Updates: New And Improved CABLE, DREXLER AND B. YERDON Liberty Elementary now has a fence and a new roof! We are excited about these new additions that will continue to keep our students safe here at Liberty Elementary School.

Math And Reading Screenings CABLE, DREXLER AND B. YERDON A math screening was completed by students in 1st through 5th Grades. Students in kindergarten through 2nd grade participated in the DIBELS universal reading screening. Both of these screenings give valuable data that provide classroom teachers with information that will guide instruction tailored for each individual students’ needs.

These are exciting times for Tiger Nation join us! We have inducted our third class of the Harrisburg High School Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony at halftime of our annual Tiger Bowl football game on August 29 was well received. The committee is hoping this exposure will raise awareness of the Hall of Fame and encourage our community to nominate future inductees. Next year’s induction will again occur at Tiger Bowl on Saturday, September 10, 2016 - mark your calendars now! We wish to thank our Tiger Bowl primary sponsor Brian Sandro of Daubys Sports Center. Along with our successful sports-filled Tiger Bowl Hall of Fame Game Day fundraiser, Tiger Nation also held its annual Fine Arts and Sports Banquet on Saturday, September 12th at the Harrisburg Event Center. 16 faculty spoke about their extra curricular activity, a meal was enjoyed and dollars were raised with a live and silent auction. Thanks to our primary Banquet sponsors, Bill Christensen of Dakota Beverage, Brad and Karen Meyer of Repairable Vehicles, and Steve Nelson of the Harrisburg Event Center. Each spring the faculty from our extra-curriculars present any financial assistance for the summer or following year and the booster club is eager to fill those needs. Family memberships in Tiger Nation begin at just $50 and include two Tiger Nation member popcorn pins - enjoy a free popcorn at each home event! Membership levels increase to $150, includes popcorn pins and a $25 Dauby Tiger Nation clothing voucher, $250 memberships include pins and a $50 clothing voucher, and increase accordingly $500 and up, etc. Members who commit to the $250 membership at a fouryear commitment will have names added to the Donor Wall. $500, three-year commitment families will also have names added to the Tiger Nation Donor Wall on the north wall outside of gymnasium. At our monthly meetings, the third Wednesday of each month, 7pm, high school library, we discuss upcoming fundraisers and ways to support our student athletes, competitors, performers and musicians. We are always looking for fresh, new ideas and your presence can make a difference!

Our 2015-16 Tiger Nation initiatives are progressing well. The state championship banners are hung in the northwest corner of the gymnasium, four athletic record boards have been paid for with five more on the way and the plans are underway for the future mural and trophy cases to line the hallway to the locker rooms. Your financial support in Tiger Nation can also be directed to these necessary initiatives. Some notable future dates in Tiger Nation: Tuesday, October 20, Volleyball Senior Night, Tiger Nation membership sign up and HyVee Scrip Card sales. Saturday, November 21, Tiger Robotics open house 10am at South Middle School. Saturday, December 12, annual Prairie Christmas, two performances in the Performing Arts Center at Harrisburg High School. Tickets will be $7.50 each, free for Tiger Nation members, the event will include holiday raffle items and refreshments. Saturday, December 19, Winter Youth Cheer Camp, look for more information soon.
