Tennis is being served up for the first time at HHS and we are excited to be building a strong program. Our tennis courts are complete and ready for use! The high school team will be busy on the courts much of the time. However, when not in use the public is welcome to use the courts as often as they would like. We ask only that people respect the property and leave it in the same condition as they found it. No bikes, roller blades, or pets will be allowed on the courts at any time. Harrisburg Water Restrictions MARY MCCLUNG City of Harrisburg Water Restrictions are in effect year round. Watering restrictions apply to the sprinkling, watering, or irrigating of lawns. Trees, shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens may be watered as needed. These restrictions are strictly enforced and failure to abide by them will result in up to a $200.00 fine. Currently we are at a Level 2 Restriction which limits watering or irrigating of yards to 2 days per week using the last digit of your physical address. Water use shall occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. If your address ends in: 0, 3, 6 - you may water on Monday and Thursday 1, 4, 7 – you may water on Tuesday and Friday 2, 5, 8, 9 – you may water on Wednesday and Saturday No watering is allowed on Sundays or between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.! Should the level of restriction change, notification will be done by the following methods: city website, Tiger Times publication, and on your monthly water billing. To establish a new lawn, new sod and seed watering permits are available for a one-time, two week period. The permit is $50.00 and can be obtained from City Hall. It Is Tree Trimming Time! MICHAEL MCMAHON, PLANNING & ZONING ADMINISTRATOR Fall is the best time to trim trees and shrubs. Property owners are responsible for keeping overhanging branches cleared from the walkable area of sidewalks and the driving area of streets, as required by Chapter 6.0502 of Harrisburg Codified Ordinances. 6.0502 Duties of Property Owners. It shall be the duty of any person owning or occupying real property bordering on any street upon which property there may be shrubs or trees, to prune or remove such shrubs or trees in such manner that they will not obstruct or shade the street lights, obstruct the passage of pedestrians on sidewalks, obstruct vision of traffic signs, or obstruct view of any street or alley intersections, except where such services are provided for by utility firms. It shall also be the duty of such person to prune or remove shrubs or trees located in the street right-of-way adjacent to their property. Removal shall be required when such shrubs or trees are diseased, dead, of a prohibited species, or pose a safety hazard or nuisance. The person owning or occupying such real property shall be responsible for pruning shrubs and trees when they violate clearance requirements. The minimum clearance of any overhanging portion thereof shall be ten feet whenever practicable, and twelve feet over all streets except truck thoroughfares where the clearances shall be fourteen to sixteen feet, unless otherwise determined by the City Council. Harrisburg Area Food Pantry Open House In order to better serve our community, the food pantry was recently relocated from the Harrisburg United Methodist Church to the old city hall, 203 Prairie St. To celebrate this expansion, we are holding an open house on Tuesday, September 8th from 4-7 pm for all Harrisburg area residents. Whether you plan to volunteer, wish to make a donation, are in need of current or future services, or are just curious about changes that have been made, we invite you to join us. Harrisburg Area Food Pantry Neighbors Helping Neighbors The Harrisburg Area Food Pantry is a faith based outreach serving Harrisburg and the surrounding area. Generous donations are contributed or collected by several organizations such as the Boys and Girl Scouts, Postal Carriers, local churches, and various organizations within the school district. Whether you’ve recently been downsized, are otherwise temporarily unemployed, or are experiencing economic challenges, we are here to help. You will need your Driver’s License, your social security number and documentation showing you are from the Harrisburg area. Any use of available resources will be held in the strictest of confidence. Hours of operation are the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 4:00 – 7:00 pm or by appointment. We have recently relocated to the old city hall, 203 Prairie St. You can reach us at (605) 767-2253 or (605) 929-0599. As our community grows, we will continue to experience increased need for the food pantry. Your non-perishable food items and monetary donations may be mailed to or dropped off at the food pantry during normal hours of operation or Harrisburg United Methodist Church at 204 Grand Ave. Immediate needs: coffee, laundry detergent, spaghetti sauce, feminine hygiene products, dish soap, cleaning supplies, spices. Be Informed MARCUS MAHLEN The City staff has several projects going on that we’d like to inform our citizens about. Please be aware of these projects as they directly affect each and every one of you! New City Website In the summer of 2014, the City Council decided to start a project of creating a new website for the city. This website is finally near completion and in the coming weeks with be available for you, the citizen of Harrisburg’s convenience. Be looking for our announcement on the City Facebook page! You can find the new city website at HarrisburgSD.gov. The city created a new website for a number of reasons, many of which are below: • Convenience – The new website has been designed for the convenience of the user. Whether that might be to pay a bill online, receive a building permit, or submit a concern, the new website provides a much simpler platform for the user. • Navigation – Navigation is key in any website in today’s day and age, but it is very crucial in the success of a government website in which the primary reason a user would visit is for a specific purpose. In order to improve navigation we’ve taken a much simpler approach to this website, filing every page under a specific primary page, once again keeping the user in mind. • Usability – We’ve moved mobile! In continuing with the rapid changes in web development,

we created the new website from scratch to be completely mobile friendly. This means the website will adapt to any kind of mobile device and fit to the screen of your cell phone, tablet or laptop. • Promotion – Our new website will be used for much more promotional purposes than before. You may notice the Community and Economic Development tabs available for any prospective business owner or possible future resident. The city wants to stay ahead of the curve in attracting all growth and we feel this website does just that. • Events – This website features an interactive event calendar that we’d like all local groups to utilize! To get an event on the calendar, simply select ‘submit an event’ and follow the short process. The event will automatically be sent to city staff who will than approve it and it will be featured on the event calendar. This is a great tool for any local organization or school program. Please check out the new website, use it to for your convenience and as a resource. Please bookmark it and pass the word along. Thanks! Community Assessment In an attempt to gauge a much better understanding of the current state of the City of Harrisburg and its citizens, the City Council has decided to engage in an in depth community assessment. To perform the community assessment, the

council contracted with the Government Research Bureau (GRB) out of the University of South Dakota, a group that has a distinguished history of conducting applied research on public policy and administrative issues affecting the State of South Dakota, local governments, and American Indian Reservations and nonprofits. In June, the GRB held three focus group meetings in Harrisburg of community leaders, city leaders, and the City Council to attempt to gauge a much better understanding of what questions to ask on the survey. What we now need from our community is to participate in the survey. During the month of September, every resident of the city will receive a survey and we ask that you please fill it out and send it back in a timely manner. This survey is meant to gauge not only what our community needs, but also what our citizen’s want and the results will be very telling and have a large effect on where the city staff and city council will focus many of their resources regarding certain areas. Thank you very much for helping to better your community! Special Census As I’m sure you know, the United States Census Bureau completes a regular census every decade, the last of which was performed in 2010. You might also be aware that the City of Harrisburg is still growing at an above average rate and must

continue to improve and update its roads to sustain and foster this growth. How are these two points connected? City Council has decided to undergo a special census, or in other words conduct a census specifically for Harrisburg during a non-census year. The reason the city has decided to undertake a special census is that we have significant reason to believe we now have over 5,000 residents. This is very significant as in the State of South Dakota, if a city has over 5,000 residents that is confirmed by the federal government, they are moved up to Class A status, in the group of the largest cities in the state. This allows for a significant amount of increased funding for state highways from the State Department of Transportation and would allow us to improve our main streets including Willow St., Cliff Ave., and Minnesota Ave. Starting this fall, possibly as early as October, city staff and others will begin hitting the streets of Harrisburg collecting data for the special census. It is crucial that they get as in depth as possible with all the data they will be collecting, especially population numbers. Please be courteous to these census gatherers as they are performing the special census for a specific purpose – to make the roads much more convenient and safe for all residents and visitors of Harrisburg, further fostering any potential growth both residential and commercial/industrial.

HHS 2015 Hall of Fame Inductees Thanks to all of those who attended Tiger Bowl and joined in to honor this year’s Hall of Fame Inductees. The Harrisburg High School Hall of Fame was founded to promote pride in Harrisburg High School and to honor alumni, faculty, staff, and friends who have made outstanding accomplishments in their communities and their lives since they have been associated with the school. The Hall of Fame will help preserve and strengthen the school motto “Building Strong Foundations for Success”. In addition, these recognitions are for the purpose of honoring and perpetuating the individuals who have excelled and provide our students with examples of what to dream and aspire to be. Harrisburg High School, the Harrisburg Tigers Hall of Fame Committee and Tiger Nation congratulate all the inductees and their families! Additional Biographical information on the Inductees: Dean Axtell (Community Member and HHS Class of 1949) is being inducted in the community contributor category. Dean has always been an active supporter of the Harrisburg S c h o o l District, HHS athletics, Tiger Nation and the Fine Arts his entire life. Dean can always be found in the stands, home or away, cheering for football, volleyball and basketball and while also quietly observing plays, music/vocal concerts, and Prairie Christmas. Most of the high school kids know him as “Grandpa Dean”. In addition to being a steadfast contributor to HHS activities spanning now nearly 6 decades, Dean himself was a 12 year senior at Harrisburg High School, during which time he participated in 4 years of basketball, 3 years of baseball, 5 years of high school band and 4 years of chorus. You can truly say he was a well-rounded individual and is well-known in the community as one of the most genuinely kind people you could ever meet. After graduation, Dean along with classmate and fellow Harrisburg Hall of Fame member, Charles “CAB” Benson joined the South Dakota Air National Guard

in 1949 and Dean attended the California School for Aeronautics. He was called to Active Duty for the Korean War in 1951. In 1953 Dean went to work full time for the South Dakota Air National Guard. He was an aircraft mechanic and held various supervisor positions in his 39 years with the South Dakota Air National Guard, retiring in March 1986 at the age of 55. Dean was an instrumental part of the development of Little League baseball in Harrisburg and he coached American Legion and VFW baseball for 4 years. He was an HHS FFA mentor and chaperone for many years, judging various contests and the local and district level. Dean also served on the Harrisburg School Board for 6 years. He is a 61 year member of the Harrisburg American Legion, and active member of the Harrisburg Community Cemetery Board. He and his wife Min are life-long members of the Harrisburg United Methodist Church. Dean has 5 children who were all 12 year graduates of Harrisburg High School: Arlene 1970, Dee 1972, Kathy 1973, Betty Jo 1974, and Scott 1985. He has 11 grandchildren which 2 have graduated from HHS and currently has 2 in high school at Harrisburg, and also has 10 greatgrandchildren. Renee Rebnord (Teacher Mentor 1980-2012)

and

is being inducted in the mentor category, specifically for her contributions to the growth of the Fine Arts program in Harrisburg. After spending a brief time teaching post graduation in both Canton and Brandon, Mrs. Rebnord came to Harrisburg in 1980 and found her permanent home. Mrs. Rebnord completed her Master’s degree in English Education from Augustana College in 1984. Mrs. Rebnord’s impact on students in the Harrisburg School District spans across decades, with an overwhelming amount of students noting her as the most influential person in their high school years. As an English teacher, she taught achieved accolades as the KDLT “Teacher Who Makes a Difference” in 1987, the SD Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator in 1988, and Master Teacher of the Year for ’91-’92. Although officially “retired”, Mrs. Rebnord still finds

her way back to the High School to teach a Leadership and Service class each day. Mrs. Rebnord’s impact did not stop at the classroom doors, in fact, not even at the Harrisburg School doors, as while she served 28 years in the capacity of student council advisor, 14 of those years, she also served as the SD Student Council Executive Director. Under her leadership, the HHS Student Council received 14 years of SD Outstanding Student Council Awards, and 8 years National Council of Excellence Gold Level as well. Personally for her efforts with the student council, Mrs. Rebnord twice received the Warren E. Schull Award for South Dakota Outstanding Student Council Advisor (1998-99 and 201112), received the South Dakota High School Activities Association Distinguished Service Award in 2011, served on the National Federation of High School Associations Sportsmanship Committee for four years, and received the National Federation of High School Associations Region 5 Spirit of Sport Award in 2012. In addition to her steadfast leadership of the student council, Mrs. Rebnord also single handedly led the stage performing arts in Harrisburg for many years, as she directed the High School plays for 26 years, was the Oral Interp coach for 20 years, and directed the school’s one act play for 5 years. Mrs. Rebnord, and her late husband Steve resided in Sioux Falls and were married for 40 years and have 2 adult children, sons Eric and Nicholas, his wife Stephanie and a granddaughter, Samantha. Brad Kelvington- (Coach Administrator 1993-2001)

is being inducted in the coach/ m e n t o r category. C o a c h Kelvington graduated from Olivia, MN HS in 1986. After high school Kelvington wrestled for the Mustangs and graduated from Southwest State University 1991. Kelvington started his teaching and coaching career in Vermillion, SD where he and his wife Taunja were first hired out of college. Starting in the fall of 1993 Kelvington began teaching and coaching for Harrisburg where he was Head Wrestling Coach, Jr. High

Football Coach, and started the boys and girls Tiger golf program, serving as Head Coach. Kelvington taught Social Studies to grades 7, 8, 11, and 12 during his career at Harrisburg. During the eight seasons as Head Wrestling Coach Kelvington lead the Tigers to six top ten team finishes at the state tournament, including State “B” Championships in 1998 and 2001. The Tigers were also runners-up in 2000 and the State “B” runners-up in the inaugural dual team tournament in 2001. During his tenure the Tigers were five time Big Sioux Conference Champs (1997-2001), six time District Champs (1996-2001) and three time Region Champs (1997, 1998, 2001). The team’s success lead to Kelvington being named Region 2B coach of the year in 1997 and 1998, and the 1998 SDHSAA Wrestling Coach of the Year. Kelvington was selected as Co-Head Coach for Team SD at the Disney Duals in 1997, in which they were Champions. Tiger wrestlers earned 42 individual state medals in Class B under Kelvington’s guidance. Six of those medals were individual champions, the first ever for the Harrisburg Wrestling program, won by Brett Hudson (1X), John Henjum (3X) and Travis Slack (2X). Further, Kelvington’s Tigers racked up 19 individual region championships, 36 individual district championships and 35 individual Big Sioux championships. While teaching at Harrisburg, Kelvington earned a Master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in Educational Leadership in 2000 and a post graduate degree from Minnesota State-Mankato in EL in 2002. After guiding the Tigers in and out of the classroom for eight seasons, Kelvington left Harrisburg for the opportunity to serve as a principal, which he has done for the last 14 years. The first five years were at RCW in Renville, MN and the last nine years at Foley, MN where he and his family currently live. Kelvington and his wife Taunja have two children, Luke and Haley. Luke is currently a redshirt freshman on the St. Cloud State University Husky football team, majoring in Kinesiology. Haley is a junior at Foley High School, where she participates in volleyball, basketball and track and is a member of the National Honor Society. Being an administrator keeps Coach Kelvington out of the wrestling room on a daily basis, but he finds time to work with the youth and varsity wrestling programs whenever possible. In 2014, Brad

and Taunja were named “Fans of the Year” at Foley Public Schools for their involvement behind the scenes promoting athletics. Frank McBride (Class of 1948) is being inducted in the male a t h l e t e category. F r a n k graduated in 1948 after a prolific a t h l e t i c career at Harrisburg High School in cross country, track and field, and basketball. Frank brought home individual state championships for the Tigers in 1947 and 1948 in the half mile (his 2:01 time still places second in school history), as well as a state cross country championship in the fall of 1947. His 4 x 400 meter relay team with Ken Barnes, Ron Eliason and Verlyn Thorpe finished runner up state champions in 1948. Frank lettered all four years in basketball, too, as a Tiger and led in scoring his junior and senior years. His career high 32 points scored in the semifinal game vs. Valley Springs later led the team to a District 18 Championship in 1948. At South Dakota’s storied Howard Wood Dakota Relays, Frank earned two gold medals. In 1948, with his sprint medley relay teammates, Barnes, Eliason and Thorpe, they broke a record which held for ten years. Later, as a South Dakota State University Jackrabbit, Frank won the mile run in a time of 4:19, which broke the previous record by six seconds. Then, in 1952, Frank bested his record, running a 4:13.5 mile (this time stood as South Dakota all-comers record for twenty years), earning a second place finish at the NAIA Championships. Winning North Central Conference Championships in the mile in both 1951 and 1952, as well as the 1952 two mile championship, Frank was a great track and field team captain. As a multi-sport collegiate athlete, he lettered three years and was team co-captain for the SDSU basketball team his senior year 1951-52. The Jackrabbits earned the North Central Conference Tournament Championship in 1951. Frank’s running career did not end after his college graduation either as his fifth place mile finish in the NCAA National Championships earned him qualification for the final Olympic trials. At the 1952 Olympic Trials at the Los Angeles Coliseum, Frank finished seventh place in the mile in a time of 3:55.5, only the first three finishers qualify to compete at the Olympics. To this day, Frank is the only Harrisburg Tiger Alumni

known to have competed or place in an Olympic trials event. Frank earned a B.S. in Physical Education from South Dakota State University followed by a Masters from Michigan and a PhD in Philosophy from Michigan State. He served as Head Coach of the United States Interservice Track Team as they competed in Athens in 1955 and ‘57 as well as Berlin in 1956. Frank was appointed as the U.S. Coach in 1958 as well but the meet was canceled due to the Suez Crisis. He continued this interest in coaching as an Associate Professor and Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at Wayne State University in Midtown Detroit from 1958-1967. Frank led the Warriors of Wayne State University to four President Athletic Conference (PAC) cross country team titles from 195962, including three individual champions. The track and field program won two outdoor PAC titles in 1962-63 and finished second on three other occasions. Frank has already been inducted into the Wayne State University and Howard Wood Dakota Relays Halls of Fame and was nominated also for South Dakota State University’s. In 1975, Frank renewed his love of competition and qualified for the Boston Marathon. That year, he placed tenth in the Masters division racing a quick 26.2 miles in 2:44. He placed seventh at the World Masters Championship in Toronto in 1975, finishing in 2:43. Frank resides in Detroit with his wife of 60 years, Dr. Angela McBride. Frank sends his regrets that he is unable to attend the Harrisburg High School Hall of Fame induction but is honored his teammate and friend Ron Eliason will be receiving this award on his behalf.

Kristi earned All-State honors twice in her career, 2nd team All State in 1987 and 1988 and also All-Conference honors in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. She graduated as Harrisburg’s all-time leading scorer and is currently #5 on the scoring list. She was the first ever 1000 point scorer at Harrisburg and is Harrisburg’s all-time leading rebounder with 819. She is also the all-time leading shot blocker with 147 and is currently #10 on the list for steals in a career with 163. In addition to her athletic career, Kristi was Harrisburg’s Homecoming Queen her senior year. Kristi is a lifelong resident of Harrisburg, living here currently with her two sons, Brandon (11), a 6th grader at Harrisburg South Middle school , and Jackson (6), a 1st grader at Freedom Elementary. Kristi has spent many years volunteering as a YMCA/YWCA youth boys and girl’s basketball coach and also a Harrisburg youth basketball coach. She is a member of Springdale Lutheran church and teaches Sunday school. Still an avid sports fan, Kristi attends many Harrisburg athletic and fine arts events, especially following the Harrisburg wrestlers! She enjoys spending time with her boys, working out at Tryon Gym and being outdoors. Kristi is an administrative assistant at Security National Bank in Sioux Falls. 1983 Girls Basketball Team

winning the Conference and District Tournaments along the way. For their efforts, the Tigers finished rated 5th in the AP Sportwriters poll. Varsity Team Members included, Kitty Danz, Laura Dvorak, Nancy Guy, Susan Hootman, Renae Ramstad, Dawn Nelson, Wendy Bechtold, Kami Kunkel, Kelli Coyne, Andrea Thompson, Carla Mueller, and Michelle Juel. 1996 Class A State Championship Track Team

The 1996 State Championship Track team hoisted the first and only track championship for the Tigers. Leading the way for the Tigers were Gold Medal achievements by two relay teams (4x100 and 4x200) consisting of Jeff Drexler, Jeff Skinner, James Bruner and Shannon Poppinga, as well as individual Gold Medals by Poppinga (Long-jump) and Drexler (100m). Additionally, the following Tigers brought home medals to complete the team effort: 4x400m relay team (7th) consisting of Dan Bruner, James Bruner, Jeff Skinner and Matt Mathiesen, Drexler (1st-100m, 3rd200m), Poppinga (1st- Long Jump, 2nd- 200m), Dan Bruner (3rd-110m hurdles and 300m hurdles), and Chad Odens (7th- High Jump). In addition to the hoisting the State Championship trophy, the Tigers also took home Regional, and Big Sioux Conference honors.

Kristi (Juel) Steward–(Class of 1989) is being inducted in the female a t h l e t e category. K r i s t i graduated f r o m Harrisburg in 1989 and attended t h e University of South Dakota. As a 12-year senior and multi-sport athlete, Kristi was never far from an athletic event in Harrisburg, either participating or cheering the Tigers on from the stands. In high school she was a member of the girl’s track and basketball teams and also a statistician for the boy’s basketball team. Her greatest love was

Perfection…that is what the 1983 Girls Basketball team so narrowly missed. Under the guidance of Head Coach Terry Fisher and Asst. Coach Vernal Anderson, the girls’ basketball team posted the only undefeated regular season in the history of the Tigers girls basketball program. The Tigers finished one game away from a state-tournament berth, only to be defeated by the eventual state champion Wakonda Warriors in the Region 6 finals. Led by All-State and All-Conference selection Andrea Thompson and All-Conference Selections, Wendy Bechtold, Michelle Juel, as well as honorable mention conference selections Renae Ramstad and Kami Kunkel, the Tigers rattled off 19 straight regular season wins, THE TIGER TIMES • SEPTEMBER 2015 • PAGE 7

HHS Sports Cross Country 2015 We have 52 kids out for Cross Country this year. A good mix of new faces and experienced runners. The girls team will be led by seniors Taylor VanHolland and Meagan Schenk. Juniors Alexander Auch and Will Johnson are the top returning runners for the boys team. The success of our varsity teams will depend on how our younger runners develop as the season progresses.

Tiger Volleyball Digging Deep To Compete The Harrisburg Tiger volleyball team has spent a lot of time in the gym over the summer and since the season began on August 13. The athletes stayed involved with volleyball during the off-season by attending an individual skills and team camp at Harrisburg High School. The varsity players also attended team camps at Brandon Valley and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Once the 2015 volleyball season kicked off, the team’s forty athletes tuned up their skills with a week of two-a-day practices, all in preparation for their first match versus Aberdeen Central on Tuesday,

Now is the time to put together resumes/activity lists to submit with applications to posthigh schools and scholarships. It’s also great to give to people who will write letters of recommendation. Be sure to include community service experiences and all activities in and out of school. Make sure your senior checks out job shadow opportunities in the Counseling Office when school starts. The new school year is beginning to kick off, and our local HOSA chapter is starting to get active to make this year one to remember. This begins with our membership drive each night of high school orientation. Harrisburg held the title of the largest HOSA chapter last year, and we hope to continue to pull in more outgoing students with an interest in health and science careers. Parents and students can register for the new HOSA year and pay for membership fees on site to avoid any future troubles. In addition to our high school drives, our chapter officers will also be at each elementary school’s orientation providing information on our monthly Science Saturday. This fundraiser was an overwhelming success last year by providing our members an opportunity to interact with elementary students in grades 3-5 and prepare their favorite, most entertaining science workshops. This activity is an amazing experience for both high school and elementary students involved, and also serves as a fundraiser to send more students to the National Leadership Conference after they have qualified at the State Conference. With these extra funds, Harrisburg has been able to make a strong presence at the National Conference every year and hopefully will continue to represent our state well. Additionally, HOSA assisted with the 5th annual Tiger Bowl 5k at 8 am on August 29th. Members helped the event staff to set up the race and hand out water to the runners. Tiger Nation, New Budget, Same Mission! VICKI LANIER Tiger Nation, new budget, same mission! The mission of enriching the development of students in the Harrisburg School District through the enhancement of extracurricular activities is still our focus. Tiger Nation is excited to share the news that the school administration will now be recovering the original debt that Tiger Nation incurred at its inception. The debt will be retired by the same corporate interests but the relationship will be handled by the district rather than the booster club. This big change for the booster club allows us to keep all profits from all fundraisers to be used directly on small projects at the school and of course, our spring handouts to the extra curricular clubs, groups, musicians and teams who ask. We were able to award over $15,000 last April and if we can keep families involved and memberships growing, we will be able to award even more. Last April, HOSA, boys basketball, softball, baseball, tennis, girls basketball, wrestling, Debate, Tiger Robotics, FCCLA, cheerleading, track and field, DECA and Tiger Vision each asked for donations from Tiger Nation and each received a piece of the kitty. Each year, Tiger Nation will also have a project or initiative as a fundraising focus. For the 2015-2016 school year, Tiger Nation is focusing on updating the walls and halls of Harrisburg High School. New athletic record boards,

nine have already arrived and will be hung soon, a mural and numerous trophy cases for our Fine Arts and Athletic programs are on the agenda. The Harrisburg Hall of Fame display is already up and displayed on the wall adjoining the Tiger Nation donor wall and the two new state championship banners are in the school to be newly hung along with the former banners in the gymnasium soon. In order to continue the successful financial support for our extra curricular activities at Harrisburg, parent involvement and family memberships are key. Family memberships begin at just $50, increase to $150, $250 etc. Your donation to Tiger Nation gives us the opportunity to beautify the walls at the high school. Your involvement volunteering at our fundraisers will directly increase the dollars the booster club can hand out each spring.

Tiger Nation is always looking for new members with fresh ideas. There is available space on the board as well for those who wish to influence how the fundraising will be spent in the years to come. Join Tiger Nation, get involved and make a difference in the life of a Tiger!

2015 Harrisburg South 6th Grade Team JASON DONNELLY The sixth grade team of teachers at Harrisburg South Middle School is excited to meet a new group of sixth graders on August 27th. Our sixth grade team is consisted of teachers who have been in the Harrisburg School District for a number of years. Here is a listing of who the teachers are and what they will be teaching, as well as their twitter handles so you can follow what is going on in the classroom! Our 6th grade students will see Roxie Stoebner, Jenn Rhode, and Joann Tolsma on a regular basis. Mrs. Stoebner is a 6th grade Special Education teacher and has previous teaching experiences in Kimball, Bridgewater, and Parker before coming to Harrisburg. This is her 15th year teaching in the Harrisburg School District. Mrs. Rhode is a 6th grade Special Education aide in her 10th year in Harrisburg. Mrs. Tolsma is the 6th grade tutor, and this will be her 4th year with the 6th grade. As you can see, the team has a great deal of experience, especially here in Harrisburg and we are excited to meet a great group of incoming 6th graders embarking on their middle school careers.

Welcome Back 7th Graders 7TH GRADE TEAM The 7th Grade Team at South Middle School is excited to welcome you back to the 2015-2016 school year. We are filled with energy and enthusiasm. The team has many ideas and wonderful educational opportunities planned and in the works to make this a fantastic year for everyone! We are welcoming many new faces to the 7th grade teaching staff this school year. Joe Klumper is coming to SMS from Patrick Henry Middle School where he has taught for the last five years. He will be the new Geography/Advanced Social Studies teacher. Brittany Rosberg will be the new 7th grade PE/health teacher. Ms. Rosberg has been teaching PE for two years in Watertown before coming to Harrisburg. She will also be coaching middle school girls’ basketball and track. Matt Robinson will be teaching two sections of ELA this year as well as one section of geography. Mr. Robinson taught last year in Mitchell. Siri Nelson will be taking on the role of teaching 7th grade math at the South Middle School. She is a new graduate from Dordt College. She will be coaching volleyball at the freshmen level. We would also like to welcome back our returning team members. Roxie Stoebner will be working with students in all subjects this year. Mona Tschudy will be teaching science for the team. Kirsten Wieman will continue to teach general and advanced ELA. Cheri Schumacher will be the educational assistant for our team. We look forward to getting to know the students and the parents this year.
