Harrisburg Water Restrictions City of Harrisburg Water Restrictions are in effect year round. Watering restrictions apply to the sprinkling, watering, or irrigating of lawns. Trees, shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens may be watered as needed. These restrictions are strictly enforced and failure to abide by them will result in up to a $200.00 fine. Currently we are at a Level 2 Restriction which limits watering or irrigating of yards to 2 days per week using the last digit of your physical address. Water use shall occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. If your address ends in: 0, 3, 6 - you may water on Monday and Thursday 1, 4, 7 – you may water on Tuesday and Friday 2, 5, 8, 9 – you may water on Wednesday and Saturday No watering is allowed on Sundays or between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.! Should the level of restriction change, notification will be done by the following methods: city website, Tiger Times publication, and on your monthly water billing. To establish a new lawn, new sod and seed watering permits are available for a one-time, two week period. The permit is $50.00 and can be obtained from City Hall. Cub Scout Pack 171 News DOUG VAN BEEK Hello, Harrisburg! I would like to introduce myself. My name is Doug Van Beek, and I am the new Cubmaster for Pack 171, the local Cub Scout Pack. I took over the role in March from Bobbie Gregoire, who did a great job leading the Pack for the past 6 years! I am an Eagle Scout, and I have a son Rob that is currently in the Pack. I am excited about carrying on the tradition of Scouts, and continuing the success that Bobbie has led the Pack to. Our Pack is very active in the community, and we have a lot of great things planned for the upcoming year. You may have seen us in the Fall, when we were selling popcorn, as well as collecting donations for the Scouting for Food Program. The boys were able to go sledding and ice skating, and went to a Stampede hockey game this winter. Recently, we had the opportunity to walk in the Harrisburg Days parade along with the Boy Scouts as well! This will be a great year, we have a lot of exciting things planned! The boys will be going to a Canaries game, various day camps and weekend camps in Sioux Falls, Newton Hills, and other local areas, and will be taking a trip to the Mall of America to “Sleep with the Sharks!” Of course, almost everyone has heard about the Pinewood Derby that the Cub Scouts hold every year, and will be doing so this year again. Showplace Wood Products Breaks Ground For $10 Million Expansion Governor Dennis Daugaard and local dignitaries broke ground May 15 for a $10 million expansion by Showplace Wood Products on the company’s Harrisburg campus just four miles south of Sioux Falls. Employee-owned Showplace Wood Products, Inc. manufactures fine allwood cabinetry for the home, sold through more than 600 independent kitchen and bath dealers in all 50 states and parts of Canada. Every cabinet is made-to-order to fit the individual homeowner’s specific style and space requirements. Showplace is among the largest Americanmade cabinet manufacturers. The new project, the company’s sixth major expansion, will place a 60,000 square foot, stand alone manufacturing plant outfitted with new stateof-the-art equipment at the south end of the Showplace Wood Products campus. Designed to complement the existing Harrisburg plant, the new facility will be dedicated to the manufacture of a different type of cabinet, known in the industry as full-access or frameless cabinetry. This style is popular in many parts of the country and adding the new style will enable Showplace to grow its markets and provide dealers with a new product line. “Showplace Wood Products is a perfect example of an international company with its roots firmly planted in South Dakota,” said Governor Daugaard. “The employee ownership and consistent growth of Showplace have made the company and its quality products known throughout the country and the cabinet industry.” The new plant is expected to be completed this fall, with cabinet construction set to begin in December. This production facility brings the company’s total manufacturing space to 305,330 square feet.

Lessons that can not be learned in a classroom but on a football field, a stage, a basketball cour t, on the golf course, in a quiz bowl, or debating from a podium. Tiger Nation can make an impact on these life lessons with the financial suppor t we can offer Harrisburg’ s extra curricular activities. Our faculty ask each spring for dollars to afford their students to do the “extras”, attend athletic camps, conferences, and travel to competitions locally and nationally. The Cheer Camp will begin at 9am under the direction of our new cheer coach Eve Becker and her talented squad. Air Attack Academy will lead our 9am youth Football Camp on the field. Our high school athletes will be competing starting at noon on the Volleyball court, possibly on the Tennis courts and Soccer turf as well. Coach Costain is welcoming back the 2005 State Volleyball Championship team for their ten-year reunion. Beginning at 4pm, Backyard Barbeque will be serving pulled pork sandwiches inside the stadium, Tiger gear will be for sale, inflatables for the kids, and the videos recognizing our 2015 Hall of Fame Class will be shown. At 7pm we will welcome Coach White and our varsity football team onto the field to kick off their season. We will be treated to our marching band and our Harrisburg High School Hall of Fame induction at half-time. High School Hall Of Fame Takes Shape With Help Of Local Business Thanks to the metal works talent of our own Cory Eckert, the Harrisburg Hall of Fame display has been hung on the outside north wall of the gymnasium at Harrisburg High School. Once the sliders are attached, the current fourteen plaques of our first two years of Hall of Fame honorees will be hung. Cory Eckert started his metal works business more or less by accident. He always loved the arts and did welding and metal fabrication professionally for a few years. Cory started combining the two and making small things to be used and hung around the house. Before he knew it, people started asking to purchase these items. FFA Looking For Volunteers For Old MacDonald’s Farm TODD MARKS & TARA FASTERT, FFA ADVISORS As summer is nearing the halfway point, we know that the Sioux Empire Fair will soon be here. Once again, the Harrisburg FFA will be hosting the Old MacDonald’s Farm Petting Zoo at the fair. Old Mac’s Farm is a very popular part of the fair and it takes 70-80 volunteers to operate efficiently. All FFA members are encouraged to work at least one or two, three-hour shifts at Old Mac’s. Incoming freshmen that are enrolled in Introduction to Agriculture class are encouraged to participate. You do not need to be an FFA member to volunteer. All HHS and middle school students are welcome to volunteer and we will welcome the help. Volunteers at Old Mac’s will be asked to feed and water animals, clean stalls, hold puppies and kittens, distribute hand sanitizer, and many other tasks. Volunteers at Old Mac’s will get into the fair for free and FFA members will receive a T-shirt for their efforts. Old MacDonald’s Farm will be open from August 1st through August 9th. Work shifts are 8am – 11am, 11am – 2pm, 2pm – 5pm, & 5pm – 8pm. We will also need volunteers to help set up the petting zoo all day on July 31st and we can use extra help after 6pm on Sunday, August 9th to tear down and clean up. 8th Grade Team As you enjoy your sunny days of summer you may have noticed the “Back to School” aisles sneak into stores. We would like to take a little time to introduce you to some of the members of the 8th grade team. Be sure to check out next month’s article to learn about more 8th grade team members. Ms. Alyssa Persson will be teaching 8th grade general and advanced U.S. History and coaching SMS track for the second year at Harrisburg South Middle School. Ms. Persson is originally from Alexandria, South Dakota and graduated from Hanson High School in 2010. She went on to graduate from Augustana College in 2014 with majors in History and Secondary Education. She enjoys spending time with her family back home, hunting, camping, running, and attending as many country concerts as she can. Ms. Persson also has a huge love for genealogy, antiques, and The Golden Girls. Ms. Kayla Braffet teaches 8th Grade general English Language Arts classes at Harrisburg South Middle School. She is a graduate from South Dakota State University where she obtained her English/Secondary Education degree while playing soccer for the Jackrabbits. This past summer Kayla was able to travel and study in France, Italy and Greece. This year she will not only be an English teacher, but also the boys soccer coach. Kayla Braffet is originally from Central Illinois. When Kayla is not in the classroom she enjoys working out, being outdoors and reading. Mrs. Ramona Quartier-Tschudy will be teaching 7th and 8th grade science at SMS this year. She has been teaching in the Harrisburg District for 22 years. She earned degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Secondary Education from the University of South Dakota and continues to be a coyote fan. Mrs. Tschudy and her husband, Mike, have a son at SMS and a daughter at Liberty Elementary. When not at school, Mrs. Tschudy enjoys spending time with family as well as coaching and cheering for her kids’ sporting teams. Mrs. Carla Diede teaches 8th Grade Math, Algebra and Geometry. Originally from Huron, SD she headed east to become a Jackrabbit and graduated in 2007 with a B.S. degree in Mathematics Education. In the fall she began teaching seventh and eighth grade math. Expanding upon her education she earned her Masters degree in Teaching, Learning and Leadership from SMSU in 2011. Outside of school Mrs. Diede enjoys spending time with her husband and her two children. Whether camping, water skiing, visiting the zoo or playing at the park, she stays busy and enjoys being outside as much as possible.
