Keep your garage doors closed at night and when not at home. If you keep your vehicle outside, keep it locked. Speed limits in residential areas are 20 mph, please remember to SLOW DOWN. Please respect the city parks and equipment. Report any vandalism. Follow the city ordinances regarding animals, watering restrictions, and other city codes to avoid fines. Harrisburg City Compost Site Residents living within the city limits of Harrisburg only! The Harrisburg City Compost Site located at 801 S Prairie Street – Harrisburg Maintenance Facility will be open Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., weather permitting. Please do not leave your bags by the gate if it is closed. Only items allowed at this site are branches, grass clippings, and leaves. No plastic bags or garbage! Absolutely NO other materials! THIS IS NOT A DUMP SITE and those caught dumping would be in violation and turned over to the authorities. There is the possibility of closing the site for everyone if the rules are not followed.
Lawn And Garden Irrigation Studies estimate that almost half of the water used in an average American household is for outdoor irrigation. Water wisely. Don’t bother watering after 10 AM or before 7 PM as the heat of the day will just dry out what you have applied, not to mention that it isn’t good for the grass or your plants. Try not to water on days when the wind is blowing. The wind negates any benefits of lawn watering. Lawns and gardens typically only require an inch of water per week. A thorough soaking which penetrates the soil is better than several short watering intervals which merely water the top of the ground. Watering the top of the soil is actually detrimental to the growth of your lawn. If can encourage unwanted disease and weed growth. If you haven’t installed a rain sensor for your irrigation system, do so. The cost of a sensor is about $50.00. You can recoup this cost rather quickly if your irrigation system comes on during a rain storm once or twice. Any excess water that your irrigation system applies during a rain event will simply run off your yard and down the gutter.
Sump Pumps It is against city regulations to run your sump hose water into the sewer system. Sump pump hoses need to be run outside towards the curb if at all possible. The city may conduct random inspections to insure that this policy is enforced.
Harrisburg Water Restrictions City of Harrisburg Water Restrictions are in effect year round. Watering restrictions apply to the sprinkling, watering, or irrigating of lawns. Trees, shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens may be watered as needed. These restrictions are strictly enforced and failure to abide by them will result in up to a $200.00 fine. Currently we are at a Level 2 Restriction which limits watering or irrigating of yards to 2 days per week using the last digit of your physical address. Water use shall occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. If your address ends in: 0, 3, 6 - you may water on Monday and Thursday 1, 4, 7 – you may water on Tuesday and Friday 2, 5, 8, 9 – you may water on Wednesday and Saturday No watering is allowed on Sundays or between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.! Should the level of restriction change, notification will be done by the following methods: city website, Tiger Times publication, and on your monthly water billing. To establish a new lawn, new sod and seed watering permits are available for a one-time, two week period. The permit is $50.00 and can be obtained from City Hall. Chamber Of Commerce News Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce is in the process of establishing and setting up a website. One of the 1st steps for this is to create a new email account. The goal of this website is to provide more information to interested parties regarding our members and their business. Also, this website will be connected to the City website. Harrisburg Community Library Info The Harrisburg Community Library is located at 200 E Willow Street, entrance on the southeast side of the Harrisburg Liberty Elementary School building. Summer Library Hours – These hours will continue until August 16th. Monday thru Thursday - 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday – 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Fall Hours Begin August 18th. Fall hours are 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Monday through Saturday and on Monday through Thursday the library is open from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. The summer reading program ends August 21st.

Head Start FREE Preschool Services CARMEN STEWART The Head Start program offers a free child development preschool program for children ages 3-5 at Freedom Elementary for all eligible children in the Harrisburg School District. The classroom operates Monday-Thursday from 11:30 to 3:00 p.m. with lunch and snack provided. The class size is 17 students with a qualified teacher and classroom aide. This federal Head Start program services predominately children from low-income families, but can enroll some over-income children, so we encourage everyone to complete an application and income verification. Enrollment is now being accepted for the Fall 2014-2015 school year. USD Early Head Start also serves expectant women and children ages 0-2 in the Harrisburg School District. North Middle School Choral Department Sings With Foreigner MELISSA OLSON On Tuesday, July 15th nineteen North Middle School choral students had the privilege of singing back up for the classic rock group Foreigner at the District in Sioux Falls. The students joined Foreigner on stage and sang back up for the song “I Want To Know What Love Is”. Theses students won this honor by arranging and performing an acapella version of “Juke Box Hero” and “I Want To Know What Love Is”. The North Middle School Music Department also received a $500 donation from the Grammy Foundation for this accomplishment.

Local Benefit A Success Chamber members partnered together to support Dustin Luebke Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer Benefit - “No One Fights Alone” held on June 12th. The Harrisburg Event Center donated their facility. The meal was catered by Fresh Horses. Event sponsors were Customeyez Signs, Complete Garage Doors, Inc. , Graff Insurance, Lynn Marie Photography, Nielson Construction, HURCO Technologies, Inc. , PraireWind Trailers, Allstate InsDennis Arp agent. Harrisburg School District Harrisburg Elementaries Important Dates And Information Believe it or not it’s time to face reality and get ready to send your kids back to school. Here’s some upcoming dates we would like you to be prepared for: If you are new to the district and have not enrolled your child(ren) yet we ask that you please do this promptly by calling our Student Registrar at 743-2567 option 2. Thursday, August 14th - Orientation grades K-5th - All Elementaries – 7-8pm. This is a great time to come in and meet your child’s teacher and drop off school supplies. We will also have staff from our Child Nutrition Program and our Transportation Department on hand to answer any questions. This is a great time to put money in your child’s lunch account.
Thursday, August 21st - First day of school. 8:15am Just a reminder that students should not be dropped off prior to 7:50 am. This is a safety issue and we do not have staff available until this time to supervise the students. If you choose to take advantage of your child(ren) eating breakfast at school we start serving breakfast at 7:45am. Just a reminder we do not serve breakfast on mornings that there is a late start due to inclement weather. School supply list for all Elementaries is available on line to view at all Harrisburg Elementaries websites or lists are available at most local stores. High School HHS Speech And Debate “Stage” At Nationals The Harrisburg High School Speech and Debate team competed at the National Speech and Debate Association national tournament June 1620 in Overland Park, KS. Three seniors represented HHS in both speech and debate events and each of them made the stage with personal recognition during the awards ceremony. Tristan Chasing-Hawk competed in three speech events, highlighted by his performance in the spoken-word poetry final round in front of thousands on the main stage at the beginning of the awards ceremony. He also competed in poetry and prose, and finished in the top thirty of poetry competition out of two hundred plus entries. Conner Monsees and Keren Kabambi (pictured, right)competed in public forum at the national tournament for the fourth time. The duo received a scholarship for their four-peat and was acknowledged on stage at the awards ceremony with the other four-time national qualifiers. In the debate competition, the team advanced from a pool of 282 teams in the preliminary rounds to compete in the elimination rounds. The team eventually finished in the top 60 teams at the tournament. The three seniors leave the speech and debate program after four years of competition for the Ivy League, with Chasing-Hawk and Monsees attending Cornell and Kabambi choosing Princeton. Their leadership, dedication, and talent will be a challenge to replace! Congrats to each of them and best wishes!!
HOSA National Leadership Conference KAY BASS Harrisburg HOSA students enjoyed a week of fun in the sun this June at the HOSA National Leadership Conference. Seventeen high school students traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete nationally with over 7,000 other students at Disney World’s Coronado Spring Resort. A few of the events that our HHS students participated in included: medical photography, job seeking skills, biotechnology, CPR/First Aid, Public Service Announcement, Creative Problem Solving and Health Education. Students had great experiences competing at such a challenging venue. Those that attended are looking forward to working hard and earning a spot to compete again next year. But the trip wasn’t all work and no play.... Students enjoyed 3 days at Daytona Beach and a trip to Disney’s Magic Kingdom! South Middle School What Are You Doing This Summer? DARREN ELLWEIN Most middle school students spend their summer swimming, playing video games or just lounging, but two middle school students will be volunteering at The Great Plains Zoo. Mikki and Sky Brian filled out an application and interviewed at the zoo before being accepted in the Summer Volunteer Program. They will be working eight or more hours per week. What activities do volunteers complete? The girls will be cleaning animal pens, working with smaller animals, maintaining the animals, and teaching children about the animals. The girls said, “We can’t wait to handle the animals and work with the kids!”
8th Grade Happenings 8TH GRADE TEAM We would like to welcome everyone back and introduce you to some of the members of the 8th grade team. Be sure to check out next month’s article to learn more about the other half of the 8th grade team. Mr. Jared Berg teaches 8th grade general and advanced English Language Arts classes at Harrisburg South Middle School. He is a graduate of South Dakota State University where he obtained an English degree. Prior to teaching in Harrisburg, Mr. Berg spent five years teaching at a middle school in Columbus, Nebraska. Mr. Berg has a wonderful wife, Amanda, who will be teaching Freshmen in the MOD/MCL program at Harrisburg High School next year. In addition, they have a two year old son, Asher, and two black labs: Dacotah and Cato. When not educating the future leaders of America, Mr. Berg enjoys reading, running, and spending time with family. Mr. Dick teaches 6th and 8th Grade Computer classes at HSMS. A 1994 graduate of Lennox High School, Mr. Dick took his burgeoning legacy to SDSU. After transferring to DSU midway through his education he found the love of his life, Colette. They were married shortly after their graduation in 2000. 3 years later brought their first child Madison and the completion of his Masters degree from the University of Saint Mary’s. In 2006 he
welcomed his 2nd child, Cooper to the mix. Throughout all of this Mr. Dick continued to work in SD and MN through 4 different districts. He is excited to be in Harrisburg and have his children enrolled in a terrific district. Mrs. Diede teaches 8th Grade Math, Algebra and Geometry. Originally from Huron, SD she headed east to become a Jackrabbit and graduated in 2007 with a B.S. degree in Mathematics Education. In the fall Mrs. Diede began teaching seventh and eighth grade math at LWC Middle School in Lennox. Expanding upon her education she earned her Masters degree in Teaching, Learning and Leadership from SMSU in 2011. Outside of school Mrs. Diede enjoys spending time with her husband Chris and her two children Zander and Eleanor. Whether camping, water skiing, visiting the zoo or playing at the park, she stays busy and enjoys being outside as much as possible. Mr. Rieck is a dominant force in education not just at Harrisburg South Middle school but across the nation. Mr. Rieck is a Special Education case manager and teaches Resource Room Math. 8th Grade Happenings, Cont’d from Page 9 from the Aberdeen area where he grew up on a farm. He attended high school in Warner, home of the fighting Monarchs (majestic blue lion, not a butterfly). Upon graduating in 1989, he made the long trip to Aberdeen where he attended Northern State University where he graduated in 1994. He taught for a year in Onida South Dakota before packing up and moving to Germany for a year where he worked in a cafe’. Upon his return, he began working with individuals with disabilities at Sioux Vocational Services. He then worked with At Risk Youth at Volunteers

of America, Dakotas for 10 years before getting back into teaching in 2007 in Harrisburg. Mr. Rieck enjoys life by spending time with his lovely wife, Amy and his beloved and energetic daughter Shelby. He teaches motorcycle rider classes in the summer and likes taking long walks on the beach. He is one of those weird work out guys and hasn’t missed a day of working out since Christmas Eve of 2009. There was a blizzard and he was flying out of Omaha at 5:30am so he couldn’t fit it in.
