LARRY BRADY RECEIVES PRESIDENT'S AWARD AT ANNUAL CELEBRATION lasting impact through both investment and philanthropy.

Beyond his business ventures, Brady has been a consistent supporter of many local organizations.

Originally from New York, Brady joined the military after high school and was stationed in Rapid City.

He helped fund Patriot’s Plaza on USD’s campus and is behind the American flags that line Cherry Street. His philanthropic efforts also include support for the Boys & Girls Club, Dakota Hospital Foundation and Vermillion Booster Club, among others.

Following his service, he came to Vermillion in the late 1960s to attend the University of South Dakota on the GI Bill.

Larry Brady was named this year’s President’s Award recipient at the Annual Celebration – an honor presented by VCDC President & CEO Jim Peterson to individuals who make a significant and lasting impact on the Vermillion community. Gayle Bliss received the award in 2024. “I am deeply honored to receive this award from the VCDC,” said Brady. “Although I wasn’t born in Vermillion, I was certainly brought up here since I have lived in Vermillion for almost 60 years.” A local business and property owner, Brady has made a

12

“I fell in love with Vermillion as a student at USD,” said Brady. “I left for a short time after graduation, but quickly returned to continue my education, raise my family and begin my business ventures.” These business ventures include opening Taco John’s – Vermillion’s oldest restaurant – and Dairy Queen and developing strip malls along Cherry Street as well as other commercial and housing investments. “He grew his businesses while meeting community needs,” said Peterson.

“On days when I need a good laugh, Larry Brady is exactly who I call,” said Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains CEO Jody Hernandez. “He is just a great guy. The Vermillion Chamber could not have chosen a more deserving recipient of the President's Award. Vermillion is better because of Larry Brady and so am I.” Brady is also an investor in the VCDC’s Grow Campaign and recently joined the chamber with all eight of his businesses. “Larry believes in Vermillion and the direction we are moving,” Peterson said. For decades of business leadership, community investment and belief in Vermillion’s future, Brady’s impact continues to shape the community he calls home. “I hope I will be able to be an asset and help Vermillion to be the best it can,” said Brady.

2026 ANNUAL CELEBRATION The Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company’s Annual Celebration on Thursday, April 9 recognized outstanding businesses, organizations and individuals from across the community. In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, the evening featured a red, white and blue theme. Emcee Michelle Maloney set the tone, taking the stage in a full revolutionary costume – complete with a wig. VCDC President & CEO Jim Peterson welcomed the more than 410 attendees to the USD Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Following Peterson, keynote speaker Amy McDonald took the stage. McDonald, a USD graduate, returned to Vermillion in 2025 after losing her North Sioux City home to flooding. She shared how local residents and business owners helped her feel at home right away. The awards ceremony began with the Brick Awards, recognizing 34 Vermillion-area businesses for new openings, expansions and continued operations under new ownership over the past year.

VERMILLION CELEBRATES AMERICA’S 250TH ALL YEAR LONG Vermillion proudly joins communities across the nation in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Local organizations, businesses, schools and community groups are hosting a wide variety of events honoring this historic milestone. From educational programs and cultural experiences to family-friendly celebrations and community gatherings, each event offers a unique way to reflect on our past and celebrate the future we’re building together. "It’s important to pause periodically and acknowledge what it takes to create and sustain a democracy. As the founders well knew, it’s no easy thing,” said Kurt Hackemer, Ph.D., who serves on America's 250th South Dakota Commission. “The events around America’s 250th anniversary will be fun and entertaining, but it’s also a good moment to reflect on our shared values.”

16

The America 250 celebrations in Vermillion have been a cross-organization collaboration. Meeting monthly, the committee shares information and helps plan key events. Groups include Clay County Historical Society, National Music Museum, University of South Dakota, Vermillion Public Library, the W.H. Over Museum, City of Vermillion and the VCDC. “It has been so fun to see our community come together to plan events that celebrate our nation's anniversary,” said Melissa Tabke, who serves as chair of Vermillion's America 250 committee. In honor of America’s 250th, Vermillion’s Fourth of July Celebration will be bigger than ever. Activities will happen throughout the week, culminating in the celebration on Saturday, July 4 in Prentis Park and the annual community fireworks show at the Polaris Parkway to close out the night.

There will be a 5K run and walk, Red, White & Roll Parade, performances, food trucks and refreshments, hot dog eating contest, free swim at Prentis Park and so much more. It’ll be a family-friendly event in Prentis Park, and we hope you can join us! Visit LiveVermillion.com/Americas250-in-Verm to see a list of all events happening in Vermillion. A SLICE OF ACTION Vermillion’s First Pizza Battle

The month-long event featured 14 local restaurants and invited residents and visitors to try specialty pizzas and vote for their favorite in the LiveVermillion app. OLC’s Maverick pizza earned the highest score from voters, impressing participants with its combination of pepperoni, bacon, cream cheese and jalapeños. During the competition, the restaurant sold an impressive 413 Maverick pizzas. “We couldn’t have done it without our staff,” said Owner Chad Grunewaldt. “They put a lot of work into making sure every pizza that came out of the kitchen was something we were proud to serve. It’s really a team effort.” Since opening in October 2012, OLC has continued to grow and evolve. While pizza has long been part of the menu, OLC made a major investment in March 2025 by purchasing new equipment to elevate its pizza offerings.

Today, every pizza is made from scratch, including the dough and sauce used to create its signature pies. “We’re proud to have won the 2026 Pizza Battle,” Grunewaldt said. “It’s been a fun way to connect with the community and showcase what we’ve been working on with our pizza. We’re looking forward to doing it again next year.” The event was made possible with support from presenting sponsor Dakota Realty & Property Management, with weekly voter giveaway prizes sponsored by Pat Roach and Masaba.
