High-speed Internet Will Soon Be Available To Vermilion

The day of slow connections, lagging Zoom calls, internet crashes, and freezeups will soon be a thing of the past according to the Town of Vermilion, Alberta Broadband Networks, and Primus Telecommunications. The three entities have been in collaboration for the past 18 months and their efforts are almost to fruition as they held a ribbon-cutting celebration on November 1 at the Vermilion Regional Centre that included mayors and dignitaries from surrounding communities; as well as local businesses and academic leaders. Jim Dawson, Vice President for Primus a division of Distributel attended the celebration and spoke briefly on what broadband means to him and the company. “Broadband is something very near and dear to my heart. I would like to take a minute to share a bit about the Primus Project that has been made possible through this amazing partnership between Alberta Broadband Networks, Primus, and the Town of Vermilion,” said Dawson. “Bringing one gigabit and greater speeds to Vermilion at rates similar to what’s available in major cities across the country speaks directly to the values at the heart of our company. At Primus, we have long been vocal about our belief in the need for fairness, affordability, and great service in Canada’s telecom industry.” Dawson went on to say that Vermilion businesses and residents will see a tremen-

dous increase in the availability of new internet speeds on the only end-to-end fiber network in Vermilion and that the services will be viable, scalable, and affordable. Also on hand at the event were several members of the Alberta Broadband Networks team who have been tasked with implementing the installation of the fibre network infrastructure. German Figueroa, Commercial Director, and Lloyd Linkiewich the Construction Director spoke in depth about the challenges and process of installing such a system and how the fibre network works. “Broadband services are put out over fibre optics; the service that we will be providing to Vermilion is speeds of up to 10 gigabytes which is kind of new industry nonstandard. Typically right now it seems to be 1 gigabyte, there are some 2.5 gigabytes, but we are able to provide 5 gigabytes and 10 gigabytes which is pretty substantial, more so not necessarily for the average home user,” explained Linkiewich. He went on to say that the average home user generally only needs 1 gigabyte, but for businesses that are transmitting larger files or any sort of digital imagery larger gigabytes are a must. He also mentioned that the fibre network is a very secure service that is not as easily tappable as it was back in the copper days, so security is much higher. Linkiewich explained that the technology Alberta Broadband Networks is using

is called horizontal directional drilling which allows them to install the system under streets, sidewalks, and driveways that causes very minimal disturbance to people’s yards or the public land in which their conduits for the fibre network is installed. He also mentioned that they utilized the local company Pentagon Energy Services for its Hydro Vac Services. Figueroa commented that the most expensive part about installing the service for a community is getting it in the ground. “Once the infrastructure is in place there are unlimited possibilities, the biggest challenges are getting the conduit in the ground and the fibre in the conduit, but once you are there it is unlimited. If you are interested in getting the service to your house or business you just have to sign up with Primus and request what we call a service drop, and after that Primus will get in touch with you and find out what kind of service you want. They are offering a number of different levels, and soon they will be offering television and phone as well,” explained Figueroa. Both gentlemen noted that back in the day internet and high speed were a luxury that only the rich and famous could afford but today it is needed by all individuals. “It is no different than your water, it’s no different than your power, everyone needs high speed. COVID proved that to the world. The pipe as we call it is the size of a strand of hair, but it’s the size of this room, that’s how much data can go through it. It is mind-

blowing. When you build a reliable fibre infrastructure in a small community it allows businesses to stay in the community, we found that in other areas in Canada, for example, small businesses had to move out because they couldn’t upload data, they couldn’t upload pictures and they couldn’t upload medical information. Once you provide fibre optic infrastructure it opens everything up for everyone,” they commented. Town of Vermilion Mayor, Greg Throndson noted that he and the council are very excited to provide a broadband fibre solution to the community. “The administration before us started this project, and I am excited that our administration has worked tirelessly to turn this project into a reality, and we thank them for it. Through Alberta Broadband Networks, we are the first rural community in Alberta to provide our residents and businesses with a fibre solution of these speeds, which will bring Vermilion tremendous opportunities for future investment and growth,” explains Mayor Throndson. A press release stated that, “While bringing broadband to small towns and rural areas is a major challenge—financially, logistically, politically—the Town of Vermilion was determined to tackle the challenge head-on. The town’s efforts are part of a growing trend, grown out of neglect of smaller communities taking the need for broadband services into their own hands.” Continued on page 2

The Vermilion Town Council met November 1, and had one delegation from Vermilion Play Development (VPD). The non-profit organization provides childcare and early learning for families in the Town of Vermilion and Count y of Vermilion River. They currently run three programs at Vermilion Elementary School and one at Lakeland College but are planning to expand with two new programs. One will be at Park view Alliance Church in Vermilion and the other will be in Two Hills. “ We currently have more children registered than s p ots available in Vermilion and there is a wait list for all programs (37 on the preschool wait list alone),” said Darla Snow. “ The new location at Parkview will alleviate

about 20-25 spots, providing relief for The ‘ARK’ program at the college.” Statistics from VPD show that there are 659 spots in the town and county, and 684 children enrolled. As for the Two Hills location, she said the community has a population over 5,000 people and no child care (but perhaps some privately run ones) so they reached out to her to create one. Snow asked council to draft a letter within the next month on behalf of the Town as a formalization showing the need for childcare in the community. It is a requirement for her to apply for the Alberta Space Creation Grant which also has a federal agreement. “ There’s is a desperate need for child care in our communit y,” said Snow. “From what I’ve seen demographics have changed quite a bit; there

are quite a few young people in our c ommunit y,” said Coun c illor Ro ber t Pulyk. In other news, it was noted that the survey results from the town’s strategic plan can be found on their website for the public to view anytime. Pulyk said, “I’d encourage you to have a look. The feedback we receive from the public helps council to know if we will be effective moving for ward. It ’s a valuable source for us, so please keep providing feedback over the next couple of years.” After being asked about it while reviewing the financial report, Brian Liebel said the RCMP funding for mula requires municipal and provincial portions. “With the municipal portion increasing it truly has added another financial burden, and for future budgets as well,” said Liebel. Councillor Pulyk said the Vermilion District Health Care Providers Attraction & Retention Committee is looking forward to filling two doctor positions in the community. He said they received an overwhelming number of applications, and it will take some time before they arrive as the process likely involves coming from overseas. Regarding the new budget deliberations, Mayor Greg Throndson said, “With such a new, young council this budget has our fingerprints all over it. I think council can be proud of what we’ve accomplished; we put a lot of thought into it.” There will also be a public budget forum coming up, so they encouraged everyone to keep an eye out online for the upcoming date.

Folk Club To Host The McDades

The Vermilion Folk Club is looking forward to welcoming the McDade family to perform at the Vermilion Legion November 19, at 7 p.m. Originally from Edmonton, the siblings Shannon, Solon, and Jeremiah grew up playing folk music at old time dances and are now highly acclaimed for their work. They won a Juno Award for ‘Best Roots Album (Group),’ and two Canadian Folk Music Awards for ‘World Group of the Year’ and ‘Instrumental Album of the Year’. Having Scottish and Irish heritage their family has been playing music for generations, but the siblings decided to start a new version after university. Largely Celtic, their show is sure to be entertaining; and they are said to incorporate influences

from jazz and a history of working with other performers from around the world. They are also said to have a unique sound and lively performances, and whether it’s through their story telling or stage presence, being related is sure to add a special flare. As children they took french in school, and having moved for University, Solon still resides in Montreal, so they sing in French as well. He said they really enjoy playing with family because having a similar background, there are a lot of things that don’t need to be explained. “Rehearsals and studio work is quite fluid and easy because so much is understood between us. Our shows are pretty energetic; some songs are slower and might bring a tear to your eye being steeped in tradition,” said Jeremiah. “Celtic music is the root of all country music, having started

T h e C o u n t y o f Ve r m i l i o n R i v e r (CV R) h a s s u b m i t t e d a p r o j e c t t o Alber ta Environment and Protected Areas regarding Black foot ’s waste water. The project is not yet approved, but will have two components; a pipeline and a treatment facility (lagoon). T h e c o u nt y ’s n ew CAO, A l a n Parkin, said the proposed project will allow for future growth of the community.

“There are some lots that have been prepared in Blackfoot and our current sys te m d o e s n’ t h ave t h e c a p a c i t y for the full build out. We need to get increased capacity for future development. The Alberta Municipal Water an d Wastewater Par tner s hip Fun d ap proved $2,916,0 0 0 of provin c ial funding this year and the municipality will have to fund the remainder (it is typically a 90-10 funding arrangement). Getting immunized against influenza and COVID-19 is the best way to protect yourself and your community. Vaccines help make your immune system stronger and help build antibodies. Keeping the number of influenza cases and outbreaks low can help protect ourselves as well as at-risk Albertans and reduce the pressure on our healthcare system. Influenza is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs that is caused by a virus. Symptoms start suddenly and may include:

• a fever and chills • a sore throat or cough • a headache • muscle aches • poor appetite • feeling tired Other symptoms may include feeling sick to your stomach (nausea), vomiting (throwing up), or having loose stool (diarrhea). These symptoms are more common in young children. In some cases, influenza can lead to a lung infection (pneumonia) or make other health problems worse. Even healthy, young people can get very sick or die from influenza. It is important to get the influenza

vaccine each year if you: • have a high risk for influenza • have close contact with someone who has a high risk, such as family members and caregivers • are a healthcare provider (it helps protect you and the people you care for) Immunization, combined with good hygiene, physical distancing, masking and staying home when sick, help prevent the spread of influenza and other respiratory illnesses . Alberta saw 2,906 cases of seasonal influenza, last year, with more than 1.2 million doses of influenza vaccine administered.

Local Pharmacist Discusses Top Tips For Managing Diabetes

November is Global Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to build awareness about diabetes and its impact, diabetes management, and the risk factors that come with improperly managing diabetes. More than 11.7 million Canadians are currently living with diabetes or prediabetes. Concerningly, about 20% to 40% of those with the condition don’t know they have it. According to Diabetes Canada, 5 million people in Canada will have diabetes by 2025. It’s important to know about the three types of diabetes, and how your pharmacist can help you keep diabetes under control. As your local pharmacist, I and my team are here to support you and qualified to help you with diabetes management. Whether you are newly diagnosed or have been living with diabetes for many years, I’ve put together some tips and ser vices to consider when it comes to diabetes management. Remember, you’re not alone and your local pharmacists are here to support you. The risk factors for diabetes S o m e d i a b ete s r i s k fac tor s c an be managed or reduced, while other factors are beyond individual control. Age / family history: There’s a greater

risk of developing type 2 diabetes if you are over 40 years old or if you have a parent or sibling with diabetes. It was on March 1, 1906, that M.A. Brimacombe received the honour of being the first overseer of the village of Vermilion. Since Vermilion was only a village at the time, it had an oversee but once it became a town later that year, it would have a mayor. As for Brimacombe, he had been in the area for some time, and lived near Bowtell before Vermilion became the main commercial centre for the area. In his election, he was elected by acclamation. Harry Bowtell, for whom Bowtell was named, was brought in as the appointed returning officer after the Lt. Governor of Alberta ordered that the new village elect an overseer to manage affairs. Brimacombe was nominated by H.B. Stephens and that nomination was seconded by Dr. Ryan. With no other names brought forward after one hour, Brimacombe received the top job. As soon as he won, he was asked to give a speech to the crowd that had gathered. He thanked the people of the village for his election and the honour that they had given him as the first overseer. He stated he would do his best to fulfill his duties to the village. He added that in a multitude of councillors there was safety. The first councillors were then chosen with H.B.

If you said yes to any of the above, then perhaps you also scan the highways and byways for stuff that accidentally falls from the back of a truck or is otherwise discarded and lost. I know a man who does just that. His name is Darin Porochnavy, and he is—a Master Finder. According to his lovely wife, Ronda, Darin’s mantra could be, Cheap is good. Free is better. She often shares photographic evidence of Darin’s latest treasures. This is where I first heard

of his unusual hobby. Let me tell you about it. His story began, as many do, outside a grocery store on Christmas Eve with the discover y of an English cucumber. I’m joking. I’ve never heard of a story that began with the sighting of a cucumber in a parking lot, particularly the night before a major holiday. However, it was when Ronda started noticing the joy Darin got from finding treasures. He went on to spy a 25-foot, 3-prong ex tension c ord, a working theatre popcorn machine, and the heavy equipment necessar y to cut keys. These were picked up and faithfully stored away along with many other exciting items, such as a Ski-Doo helmet, a massive tarpaulin worth $75, and enough underlay to carpet a house. “Daddy wins!” said Darin with a broad grin as he carried these objects into his garage.

To name only a few items, he’s found crutches, a trailer jack, fence posts, a wheelchair, several garbage cans, a length of 4-inch PVC pipe, and most recently, a sixteen-foot 2x4 lying in the middle of the Yellowhead Highway. With pride, Darin was quoted as saying, “Only need about 49 more, and I can build a shed.” His wife repor ts that when Darin makes a find, he feels it’s a great day to be alive. And his excitement is catching. Ronda admitted to me that—while alone in the car—of her own volition, she pulled over to examine the contents of an old barrel that had blown across the road. Sadly, all it contained were leaves, but it could have been great! Clearly, there are countless benefits to anyone possessing this superfinding power. Yet Darin doesn’t keep this bounty for himself. Instead, if he can’t use the items, he shares the wealth by giving things away to those

who can use them or those in need. For instance, the bucket of deep-fried chicken he found by the side of the road was awarded to a pack of hungry cats. (That may or may not be the best example, but you must admit it’s interesting). However, of all the tales I’ve heard, the best was of a pair of ladies’ spectacles found in a back alley near his home. After a cursory polish, he tried them on. Lo and behold, they were his exact prescription! Can you beat that? Despite Ronda’s belief that he now bears an eerie resemblance to Mrs. Beasley, a bespectacled doll created in the late 60s, Darin wears the glasses daily. I’d have to say the man has a gift. One suggestion that could solve many of these issues would be to have the new Twitter blue check mark verification work as a paid tier separate from what they currently have for verification. This could allow everyone to prove their identity on twitter while not removing the status symbol that the current checkmark has become for its users. They will of course need to reverify users after a name change. It’s clear that Elon has his work cut out for him as Twitter has many shortcomings as a platform. The company is majorly bloated with extra staff, and 10% of the platform's accounts are run by “bots” (AI software programmed to post ‘spam’ advertisements on the platform).

Elon quickly stripped down the company by firing about half of its employees. It seems this was needed for a long time, but it does appear he may have made the call a bit prematurely as he has begun rehiring some of these same employees. All of this chaos has damaged the Twitter brand, as well as Elon Musk’s reputation. People have begun leaving the platform as all these changes appear to be made by the billionaire apparently on a whim. However, it has only been a few weeks since Elon has been in charge, so it's hardly been enough time to draw judgment on how this whole endeavor will play out. It is clear though that Elon may need to be flexible with his plans and willing to adjust to keep the users of the platform.

War Amps Tribute To Canada’s Only Female Amputee From First World War

For more than 100 years, women have been an integral part of Canada’s military history. During the First World War, Madeleine Jaffray (1889 – 1972), served as a nurse overseas and returned home missing a limb. Jaffray was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved with her family to Galt, Ontario, as a child. She trained as a nurse, and soon after the outbreak of the First World War, enlisted with the French Red Cross. Nursing was virtually the only area where women could experience the war at the front. Jaffray went overseas in December 1915 and spent 10 months working in a military hospital near Bordeaux, France, before being transferred to a mobile ambulance unit in Adinkerke, Belgium. This area was only a few kilometres from the front lines and Jaffray recounted how the unit was bombed. “I was coming out of a

covered passage in one of the wards when a bomb fell right in front of me,” she said. This severely wounded her foot which led to an amputation, making her Canada’s only female war amputee from the First World War. The Nursing Director wrote to Jaffray’s mother, “At one o’clock last night, the hospital was bombarded by German aviators and she [Jaffray] was wounded in the foot by a piece of shrapnel from one of the bombs… It is a bad wound.” A week after the incident, Jaffray was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French military for her bravery, with an additional star for her services, though she felt that all the nurses in her unit were equally deserving of it. She was the first Canadian woman to be awarded this medal. After the war, she worked at the Dominion Orthopedic Hospital on Christie Street in Toronto. She later moved to Edmonton with her husband and continued her nurs-

ing career, working for the Victorian Order of Nurses and was a member of the Overseas Nurses Association. She also became the only female war amputee member of The War Amps, an organization started by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to provide each other with support and adapt to their new reality as amputees. Annelise Petlock was born a left arm amputee and grew up in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which was started by these founding war amputee veterans so that young amputees across Canada could receive financial support for artificial limbs and devices, as well as emotional support. “Jaffray served in wartime, returned home missing a limb and continued to practice nursing,” says Petlock, who now works with The War Amps. “She never let her amputation stop her from helping others.” The War Amps has added Jaffray’s story

Legion Making Fallen Heroes Memorials

The Royal Canadian Legion, Field Marshal Alexander Branch #11 in Vermilion is looking to collect photos and service records to create soldier memorials through the Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation. The foundation initiated these memorials to recognize over 117,000 soldiers from WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Bosnia, Afghanistan and UN Peacekeeping missions who did not make it home alive. Legion member, Barry Roth, has spent

the past eight years compiling information for the memorials and has completed 36 local ones so far. His scope has widened to include the County of Vermilion River, and he said there are approximately 200 soldiers from this area, but he is at a standstill for collecting the remainder of information because he does not have contact information for some of the families and many have moved away. So far the foundation has completed 66,000 memorials across the country. Memorials include a photograph, and the person’s military background includ-

ing what regiment they fought for, where they went, what battles they were in, and if their body wasn’t brought back where it is buried overseas. Recent additions include John MacDonald from Clandonald, William Clements Diamond from Vermilion, Gibson Fitzgerald Skelton (originally from Ireland) who lived in Vermilion, and Fredrick Bruce Albright who graduated from the Vermilion School of Agriculture. “It’s important that these names be remembered to keep the local history alive. Because they were local and settled here,

a lot of people that live around here now would have had parents or grandparents that went to school with these people. It is also a good point of interest for someone going overseas so people can visit where they were laid to rest,” said Roth. “A lot of families may have received the service record for their great uncle, etc. and through the years, it may have been hidden away in a coffee can in someone’s basement. J.R. (Dick) Arnold was born in the Island Hill district in 1920. In September of 1939 he joined the Canadian Army. As a Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineer he ser ved in England, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland. He was discharged in August of 1945. He returned to the Vermilion area and farmed for many years. Dick died in 2011. Photo submitted

Al Deschambault was born at Dundee, Quebec. In 1954, when he was 18 years old, he enlisted in the Air Force in Montreal. His basic training was at St. John’s, Quebec. Al chose to be a Crash Rescue and Structure Fire Fighter and instructor working with young, eager recruits for heavy equipment fire fighting at Borden, Ontario. Then he was transferred to McDonald, Manitoba; then to Portage La Prairie where he met and married Helen and over the next few years, they had two sons. Now, with their young family, Al was transferred to One Wing, Marville in France. In 1964, Al’s wife was admitted to a US hospital in Germany where she had their baby girl. One Wing was closing in 1966. Al refused to move to Four Wing. Soellingen in Germany where they would have to live in a tent until the PMQ Barracks were provided so he was moved back to Canada to Moisey, Quebec. When they arrived, they found out they had to live in a tent for a few weeks until the married quarters were completed. The children thought they were just camping. In 1968, he was transferred to Cold Lake, Alberta. They were posted to Goosebay, Labrador and then back to Cold Lake, Alberta in 1974 where they remained until he retired in 1980. While Al was in France their barracks were set on fire during the night at about

3 a.m. on a Saturday. The barracks were full of Friday evening party goers. Al realized he could never get so many of these men out safely as more than half of the active Fire Fighters had been moved to Lahr, Germany. Only the Pumper Operator and Al worked to put the fire out. An excited fellow kept climbing the ladder to see what was going on and later they found out that the guy was the one who had set the fire. Al enjoyed his 25 years in the service. He always worked two jobs as Air Force Instructor and Carpenter, Farm Worker. He also coached minor hockey on his days off and in the evenings.

Child Amputee Finds Inspiration From Second World War Veteran

Submitted (November, 2022) - Eight-year-old Isla McCallum is an energetic young girl with a big smile, and Charlie Jefferson, 98, is a veteran of the Second World War. At first glance, these two appear to have little in common, yet they share something special: They are both amputees. Mr. Jefferson served as a Lieutenant with the Queen’s Own Rifles Regiment. In 1945, in the Rhine Valley, Germany, he was injured by an anti-personnel mine explosion, resulting in the loss of his left leg below the knee. When he returned home, Charlie joined The War Amps, which was started by First World War amputee veterans to help each other adapt to their new reality. Years later, these veterans established the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides young amputees, like Isla, who was born a left arm amputee, with financial assistance for artificial limbs and the peer support of fellow amputees. It was through The War Amps that Isla and her family heard about Mr. Jefferson. With Remembrance Day coming up, they visited him at his Ottawa residence. Isla was interested to learn about Mr.

Jefferson and the medals he earned for his service. She was also intrigued that he too was missing a limb. Isla described Mr. Jefferson as a role model who made her feel proud to be an amputee. Isla’s mom, Jamie, says it is important that her daughter understands the sacrifices that many Canadians made for our freedom. “Mr. Jefferson and others risked their lives so that we could live in a better world.” Through The War Amps “Operation Legacy,” Isla and young amputees across the country pay tribute to the veteran members of the Association who laid the foundation for programs that continue to make a difference in the lives of amputees today. “Because of their work, child amputees have the tools and resources they need to be active, independent, and confident,” says Jamie. But Charlie says he also takes comfort in knowing that Isla and other “champs” will continue spreading the message of remembrance, even when he no longer can. Adds Jamie, “They [veterans] passed this legacy to younger amputees, and now it’s their turn to share these stories so that the sacrifices of veterans and all those who

The War Amps was started in 1918 by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other in adapting to their new reality as amputees. They then welcomed amputee veterans following the Second World War, like Jefferson, sharing all that they had learned, as well

as starting the Key Tag Service to allow these new members to gain meaningful employment and provide a service to the public. This peer support was then passed on to a new generation. In 1975, war amputee veterans recognized that their knowledge and experience could help others, so they started The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides financial assistance for the cost of artificial limbs and regional seminars to young amputees.

Serving for nearly 10 years, Cpl Chuback said he has had both good and bad experiences; moments of feeling like a king (knowing he was the only one that could get the job done), and low ones that left him beaten and bloody that had him asking why he was doing it. His realization was, “If not me, then who?” After following in the footsteps of his grandfather who fought in the Korean War and great grandfather who fought in WWI, he chose to participate as the guest speaker to honour his family and fellow servicemen. “The pride and honour I see in every person here is truly humbling.” said Cpl Chubak. Students, staff, and honoured guests shared in a moment of silence, and traditions such as the playing of ‘The Last Post’, and a new tradition of singing, ‘God Save the King’. Or when a gallon is too much for immediate use, milk can be put in containers or zip lock bags and be frozen. Once thawed it is the same as fresh milk. They will play Hinton in the first round of playoffs Thursday November 3rd at Clarke Field in Edmonton. Halloween Breakout activity with ELA 9s - Students took on the role of “Poeville” Police Investigators and had to determine whether the narrator of

Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “Tell-Tale Heart” was criminally responsible for the murder he committed. Each group was given a box with several locks attached. They had to solve the clues in order to obtain the codes to open each different lock. Once opened, the students were able to enjoy the Halloween treats found inside. Staff and students came dressed for Halloween on Monday, Oct. 31. A costume parade and activities were

planned for the last two classes of the day. Activities included coloring, pumpkin carving, tic-tac-toe and bingo in the LC. Candy was handed out to students to enjoy. The VES Hot Lunch Program hosted a Halloween dance to raise money. It was a fabulous night with over 300 people having so much fun. DJ Shannon Leonard had the best music for dancing. A big thank you to all those that came out to enjoy the night and support our hot lunch program. Grade 1 had a day filled with pumpkin fun. They carved Jack-o-Lanterns, painted pumpkins and drew faces on

mini pumpkins. Special thank you to Brit’s mom, Nashlynn’s mom and Aubrey’s mom for donating the pumpkins and gourds, and to Brooks’ mom for volunteering in the classroom. Our Grade 1 classes visited Vermilion and District Housing and Extended Care to per for m some Halloween song s for them. It was great that students were able to connect with the seniors of our community. The smiles on their faces said it all. We talk about compassion and citizenship as part of our school’s virtues and this was just one example of that. On November 1, we had our monthly assem-

bly. We star ted with a school-wide practice for our Remembrance Day song. Then we had Grade 6 students read our land acknowledgement and together we sang O Canada. Mr. Haslehurst informed us that our AR points for October were 1700, which makes our total-to-date equal 3111 points. Emmitt Boulay received the award for top division 1 reader at 50 points and Daymean Krys received it for division 2 with 57.7 points. Congratulations to both boys. Grade 6 students told us about the October Sacred Teaching of Wisdom. Wisdom is represented by the beaver, who uses knowledge to help others. Mrs. Throndson ended the assembly by acknowledging the

volleyball club students. Music education is strong at VES. Thanks to an ex tremely generous donor, the students of VES will have the opportunity to learn to play band instruments. With this donation, VES purchased $30 000 worth of instruments. What an incredible gift. St. Jerome’s Catholic School News

Halloween was non-stop fun at STJ! The day started with Ms. Svenungard’s grade 1 class performing a poem and song for our school’s October Happigram Celebration! Throughout the gathering area hung paper jack-o-lanterns with eyes in the shape of a star, a cross for a nose, and for a mouth was a fish. The children recited the poem “A Christian Pumpkin” which tells the story of those specially decorated jack-o-lanterns. The poem uses religious symbols as components of the jack-o-lanterns face to teach the gospel and remind us what God’s love is all about. Just when you thought

the cuteness was too much to bear, the students reached down and picked up light-up candles! They held their lights while singing “This Little Light of Mine”. Ms. Svenungard was delighted when she invited the audience to join in singing the last verse, and they did! Joyful singing filled the gathering area that morning, setting the stage for the Happigrams to be awarded to kids in elementary by their teachers. It was great way to start the day! Students of all ages participated in Halloween fun this year! Elementary students had classroom parties and activities followed by a costume parade and dance in the gym. Some of those

dance moves were pretty spooky! The day after Halloween, first thing in the morning, students in grades 1-5 met in the gathering area for our first practice of our upcoming Christmas concert, entitled “All About that Baby!” We enjoy singing the songs each morning but trying to learn all the words is a bit tricky. Luckily, we’ve got lots of time to practice! Mrs. Martin’s grade 4 class had the opportunity to tour the Vermilion Bottle Depot as part of their science unit, Waste and Our World. Students were amazed by the sheer volume of products that are collected and dazzled

by the mental math and skip counting skills of the workers as they process the bottles and cans. STJ hosted the MacKenzie Cup, a junior high ECACS volleyball tournament, last Wednesday. Our Jr Boys were the proud winners this year, and our Jr Girls earned silver. The MacKenzie cup is always a great way to remember Steve MacKenzie, a wonderful superintendent from our district. Our Sr Boys volleyball team had a great weekend as well, coming away with a second-place finish at Holy Rosary. Way to go Spartans!
