Great Fun At Clandonald Country Fair

The Clandonald Agricultural Society held its Clandonald Country Fair under beautiful weather conditions on August 6. The theme was ‘Breaking Loose’ and it was cer tainly represented in some of the floats in the parade which happened at 11:30 a.m.

Before the parade attendees had the oppor tunity to enjoy a pancake breakfast that consisted of pancakes, scrambled eggs, and sausages for $12 a plate which was in support of the Ag Society. Also prior to the parade, the Prairie Dogs entertained the crowd with country, rock, and Celtic music, which had children dancing to the beat and young

Local Vermilionite Doug Charlesworth once spent much of his time working in camps as a Journeyman Red Seal Electrician. After working in this field for a while he wanted to spend more time at home with his family so Charlesworth decided to switch careers, and obtained his real estate agents license in 2017. “I have always been interested in the housing market and I have always been a very people-orientated person. I love working with people and I love helping my clients find the perfect house for them, which also crosses over to include helping my sellers find the perfect buyers for their home,” commented Charlesworth. Charlesworth who is married with two small children understands the importance of finding the right home that fits each person’s/families needs whether it is their starter home or upgrading to their family home. “Every person or family a Realtor/Broker deals with has vastly differing needs. Sometimes it is a single person or couple looking for their first starter home, sometimes it is a young family who is on a limited budget, but wants to get into a home to start building on their investments, sometimes it’s a family who is looking to upgrade into a bigger

Hines James Elmer (Jim) Hines, James Elmer (Jim) passed away at home on the ranch on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at the age of 81. Jim will be remembered by his son Marty (and Terry Lynne) Hines of Marwayne and daughter Tammy Bass (and Joe Bilan) of Fort Saskatchewan; 7 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law Donna Hines of Stony Plain and brother-in-law Glenn (and Lillian) Ewen of Dewberry as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was predeceased by his wife Ruth, grandson V.C. Hines, son-in-law Randy Bass, brother Gerry Hines, and parents V.C. and Irma Hines. The celebration of Jim's life was conducted from the Dewberry Community Hall on Monday, May 2, 2022 with Lauren Isaac officiating. Al Fenton gave the eulogy and grandchildren shared their special memories. A video presentation was shown. Taped music was "Walk Through this World with Me", "Shall We Gather at the River", and "Feed Jake". The urn bearers were grandsons Brett Hines and Owen Butz. The honorary pallbearers were grandchildren Tyler Butz, Alexis Dyck, Jamie Forth, Mark Hines, and Deanna Volk. A lunch was held following the service. Cremation and a private family internment had taken place prior to the service.

UFA To Thank Local Vermilion Winner With $10,000 Farmer’s Day Prize

On August 5, UFA Board of Director Harold Haugen from Killam and UFA Delegate for Vermilion Jeff Nott presented Teresa Patry and her husband Jason with a duffle bag and two $5000 WestJet Gift cards at the UFA Vermilion Farm & Ranch Supply Petroleum location. Teresa and her husband who own and operate TJ Cattle just south of Vermilion entered the ‘Get it Done and Get Away’ contest which was available to UFA members. Teresa mentioned that she had never won anything of this significance before. “I’m not sure where we are going to go at the moment, I am thinking it may be Maui, Hawaii because Jason and I were married there 25 years ago and I think it would be nice to go back there,”

commented Teresa. She commented that they have been lifelong members of UFA and that they are really happy they had to opportunity to enter the contest, “The win is kind of surreal,” said Teresa. On Friday, July 29 Vermilion Chrysler held their annual Fair Pancake Breakfast which included pancakes, sausages and eggs for all to enjoy. The cost of each breakfast was $7 and all proceeds from the event were donated back to the community in support of the Vermilion Handi-Van Society. The Vermilion and Area Handi-van Society is a charitable organization which provides wheelchair accessible transport for people with mobility issues that reside in the area. The Handivan provides transportation to medi-

cal appointments, social events or any other event that would otherwise be restricted to individuals or groups that require wheelchairs, walkers or lack of transportation, and is a fee-for-service. Garden potatoes have been ready for some time, and they are still tasting like new potatoes. We o f te n c o o k u p a big pot, and then have left overs to slice and pan fry in butter. With new potatoes, there is no need to peel, just scrub the dir t off with a vegetable brush, and cook in a pot of boiling water. The skin of new potatoes is full of beneficial nutrients. Our garden onions and dill are ready as well. To capture some of t h e fr e s h g ar d e n f l avo u r s I m a d e a creamed onion sauce to go over some pan-fried new potatoes and it was delicious. I am sharing the recipe with you here.

Creamed Onions With Dill Sauce

Onions are a great source of the nutrient quercetin, and the good news is that cooked onions retain this beneficial nutrient, undamaged by the heat, and cooked onions are easier on the breath than raw onions. Quercetin is a flavonoid that may inhibit the growth of certain cancers. Quercetin has been shown to lower bad cholesterol al, raise good cholesterol and be protective of the cardio -vascular system. Onions are a natural source of both quercetin and chromium, which both assist in blood sugar control. Onions and garlic contain sulfur compounds that work to detox our bodies by binding to heav y metals such as lead, mercur y and cadmium and then escorting them out of the body. The green onion tops are a source of vitamin A. With all of these great benefits it is no wonder that some research-

ers are wondering if it is actually the onion, which is responsible for the Fren c h parad ox, whi c h allows the Frenc h to indulge in so many ric h foods while remaining heart healthy. This sauce star ts with making a roux, (pronounced roo) which will be the base for thickening the dairy. Be sure to use a heav y bot tomed pot, and medium heat as both butter and dairy can burn easily. I used evaporated milk, but you could use milk or light cream as well. This sauce would also be good with pasta, or poured hot over grated cheese and fries as a poutine. It can also be served as a side dish. Creamed Onions with Dill (sauce) 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon olive oil (or butter) 2 tablespoons flour 1 can of evaporated milk, plus water

bring it up to 2 cups 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 cups chopped yellow onion 1 tablespoon butter for sauté 1/2 cup green onion tops 2 teaspoon fresh dill In a heavy bottomed pot, melt the butter and oil together over medium heat, and when hot, stir in the flour and cook stirring, until it is slightly bubbly. Stir in the milk in 1/2 cup intervals, stirring and bring the mixture back up to hot and thick, before adding the next 1/2 cup milk. Continue until all the milk has been added. Add the salt and pepper into the cream sauce. Meanwhile sauté the yellow onions in the butter, in a fry pan. Add the sautéed onions, green onions and dill into the cream sauce and stir and serve.

Derwent Fire Department Fundraising For Stars

The Derwent Fire Department is hosting their 2nd Annual fundraiser for Stars Air Ambulance. This May, they seeded 21 acres of wheat that will likely be harvested in September, and Captain Ed Mailhot said their goal is to beat last year’s total. Last year, the group raised $17, 500 on a canola crop. They found the original suggestion online and being a farming community decided it worked for them. Up until September 1, supporters will have their name added to signage and social media. Mailhot said last year they accepted donations right through October, not wanting to turn away any support for the cause. As a first-responder, Mailhot said, “All

An Unfortunate Series Of Events

When I comb through old newspapers, you never know what sort of stories you will find. There may be fires that decimate a community, or there may be a robbery that makes nationwide news. Sometimes it is just stories of bonspiels and baseball tournaments, and sometimes you find a very unique and funny story. This isn’t a very long story, so the column is shor ter than usual, but I

couldn’t help but share it. It was in October 1955 when a young man named David Kather, who was 20-years-old, had bought a new motorcycle and was in the process of driving home from Edmonton. W h il e h e wa s d r i v i n g h o m e, h e suddenly crashed into a ditch and was thrown from the motorcycle. In the crash, he would suffer a broken jaw and a separated shoulder. Not a great set of injuries but thankfully not life threatening. As he was recovering in the hospital, he was just about to be released when it

was suddenly discovered that he had to have his appendix removed immediately. An emergency surgery was performed and his appendix was removed. Once again, Kather was recovering in the hospital. Finally, after a motorcycle crash and a sudden appendix surgery, he was released from the hospital and returned back home to Vermilion. After being away from his motorcycle for a few weeks, he decided that it was time to get back on the bike and take it for a ride. As he was riding the motorcycle just to

the west of Vermilion, it suddenly left the road, throwing him from it once more. This time, he suffered a fractured collar bone and was dealing with shock. All this happened in the space over only about three weeks. Needless to say, it was a tough October 1955 for David Kather. CVR Farmers Well On Their Way To Reducing Fertilizer Emissions

In 2020, the federal government issued a target to reduce fertilizer emissions by 30 per cent in the next decade. County of Vermilion River’s Director of Agriculture and Environment, Cathie Erichsen Arychuk, said the target has created a lot of push back from industry and businesses surrounding its intention, not necessarily the number. “It’s a numerical target without any attached details on how this will be met. The biggest thing is that the government is still consulting with the people it will impact,” said Erichsen-Arychuk. “Farmers would like to be recognized for the ongoing work they have already done. There is always room to improve, but fertilizer efficiency has been going on because as prices go up you use it more effectively and our farmers have been doing that very, very well.” According to fertilizercanada.ca, Cana-

dian farmers are world leaders in food production and environmental sustainability while the fertilizer industry supports over 76,000 jobs directly and indirectly throughout the supply chain. They state that Canada’s fertilizer industry contributes nearly $13 billion to Canada’s GDP, and in 2019 Canada exported approximately $7.2 billion in fertilizer. Their concern with production going down is that they may not be able to meet international export demands, and one of their reports notes a potential loss of $48 Billion to farm incomes. “The majority of what we do (in the County of Vermilion River) is export food products. The Ag industry not only provides a consistent and known food source for the people but contributes a large amount of the GDP for Alberta and Canada,” said Erichsen-Arychuk. She said there will be a different impact in eastern vs. western Canada. Provincially

the scale will be largest in Saskatchewan followed by Alberta, where based on the growing conditions and types of crops they grow, the per acre amount will likely be higher in eastern Canada. Fertilizer contains the vitamins and minerals (or nutrition) that plants or food crops need to grow, to be productive or produce a crop. “Certainly no farmer is using more fertilizer than they have to because it is expensive, but if you give anything less food than it needs, it doesn’t grow as well,” said Erichsen-Arychuk. With multiple local fertilizer retailers, she said the target doesn’t necessarily mean a loss in sales. Derwent Ag Society Shows Support For Ukraine

With the war against Ukraine by Russia still wildly continuing the Derwent Agricultural Society decided to design a float that paid homage to the people of Ukraine. “The people of Ukraine are continuing to be affected by the war they are in right now; and while it is still talked about, it isn’t as much as it was. I just wanted to bring awareness to it and show that we are still supporting them, and to say thank

you as it was the Ukrainian Pioneers who came here and broke the land so we can have what we have today,” commented Connie Mackney. On the beginning of the float there was a sign that said ‘Count Your Blessings’ and then a heart shaped sign that said ‘Pray for Peace’, with a metal decorative dove depicting/symbolizing peace along with a Ukrainian flag and an Alberta license plate that matched the blue in the sky and the flag.

In the middle of their float OLD (members dressed in overalls and straw hats and NEW (members wearing Ag Society yellow t-shirts that said “If you eat, thank a Farmer!” with wheat uniting both the old and the new.) On the back of the float, a banner hung saying, ”Long Live Ukraine.” All the decoration colours of the float were blue and yellow which represented the colours of Ukraine. The members on the float tossed blue freezies to the crowds that said, “Pray for Ukraine.” Mackney noted that it was a lot of work

to design and decorate the float, but that it was a joy to be able to toss the Freezies to the children and participate in the parade. “It was my first time decorating a float and I designed it to represent the past, present, and future. It was so long during COVID not being able to do anything like this, and now that we were allowed to have a resemblance of normalcy it was nice to be able to make the children happy. One of our old timers who always had a team of horses in the parade had passed away, so that gave me the motivation to do it,” explained Mackney.

Livestock Field Day Back At Lakeland College

Having been cancelled the past two years, Lakeland College is excited to welcome visitors to a Livestock Field Day in Vermilion on August 25. The applied research team will lead presentations at the Agriculture Technology Centre as well assist with campus tours of fields and facilities where their research projects take place. “Applied research is a critical component of Lakeland College and a key part of the value proposition we offer our community. We are committed to conducting research aimed at improving the productivity, sustainability, and profitability of agricultural producers. We are excited to open our farm, fields, and facilities to visitors interested in seeing what we have been up to since 2019,” said Dr. François Paradis, Lakeland’s director of

applied research. Lakeland College launched Canada’s first agriculture technology degree in 2020, and as a result, has expanded its applied research team significantly over the past few years. Dr. Obioha Durunna has been with the team since 2018, but they have since added Dr. Yuri Montanholi who studied in eastern Canada and Brazil, as well as Dr. Susan Markus and Dr. Brenda Ralston from Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. Lakeland College said their livestock researchers have been working on several projects, with a few highlights being: production and health impacts from seasonal feeding of garlic products to growing cattle, imaging analysis and drone applications for livestock sensing, and the use of meloxicam oral suspension in post-partum dairy cattle to increase milk production and reduce clinical disease. The team has also been

researching feed efficiency and supplementation, ranching practices for improved reproductive efficiencies, evaluating energy/ water use in the dairy parlour, and how to reduce cost with swath-grazing or forage mixtures. Field Day will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the

I came to the shelter as a stray in very poor condition, I had many mats, and a rough patch on my nose that is still healing up. I was also quite afraid of everyone here. I am doing a lot better now and I have learned that new people mean new treats! I will happily greet you at my kennel with a little salsa dance. I absolutely love going for walks, runs, and adventures. I have a ton of energy and will require a home that is committed to exercising me daily and providing me with mental enrichment too. I will also require a home that will keep up on regular grooming as I have a lot of fluff, perfect for cuddling btw.
