The Good Life Institute held the Celebration of Vermilion and Multic u l t u r a l i s m d ay o n J u n e 3 0 a n d events were held at various locations throughout the day. A pancake breakfast hosted by the Vermilion Library board was held at the Vermilion Fire Hall starting at 7 a.m. and ran until 9 a.m. Attendees enjoyed pancakes, sausage, and fruit as well as the time spent visiting. St ar t ing at 11 a .m. unt il 1 p.m. there were two lunch fundraisers that provided community residents and visitors a choice of which organization they would like to support. One lunch fundraiser was for the Vermil-

ion Cadets and the second was a lunch and bake sale in support of the Vermilion Food Bank held by Western Financial. Foo d was not the only fo cus of t h e d ay t h e B u c ke t B r i g a d e w a s hel d bet ween 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. and teams battled it out to see who could fill up their barrel quickest and highest by tossing water through the cutout ring in front of the barrel. The winner of the event was the ‘Townies’ winning a prize sponsored by Bird Hill Liquor. The ever popular open stage was held from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. in front of Copper Cork and provided participants the opportunity to show off their talent. Raymond Rolland John Wagner Jan. 2, 1930 - March 28, 2022

My sincere thank you and sincere gratitude to - Mannville Care Centre for the kindness shown my brother Raymond (John) during his stay there. To Dr. Louw and the Nursing staff for their patience, kindness, and on-going care, as well as the whole staff. They're a great group. - To my family; many of whom travelled a long distance to attend the service, who were so supportive and never wavered in their willingness to help. This includes my children and spouses, grandchildren and, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. - My ever faithful neighbours who brought food and are always willing to lend a helping hand, for their continual support. Ray's church service was held in Mannville's McQueen United Church, June 4. I'm very thankful to their members for allowing us to use their church for the service and to the faithful group of ladies who supplied the delicious lunch after wards. -The church service deserves a special acknowledgement. Our Lutheran Minister, Pastor Quinn Adams, gave a very fitting, meaningful service which was greatly appreciated. Prior to his service he requested Walter Flemke to come forth and present his "Memories of Ray". I will forever be grateful to Walter (who knew Raymond so well) for his very moving and heartful presentation. I'm sure it touched everyone present who knew Ray. The organ music was provided by Ray's niece Susan McElroy, (my daughter). After the Church Service Ray's ashes were transported to the Mannville Cemetery where the burial took place. -Reflections Funeral services, are deserving of a huge THANK YOU. Their role in providing the arrangements was done with passion, understanding, patience and kindness. Jim's help in making decisions is responsible for the beautiful photos of Ray used on the cards. the Urn, etc. Both Jim and Candice were so helpful and kind; greatly appreciated. - In closing, to everyone who sent cards which I treasure; to the long list of persons who acknowledged Ray's passing through face book, your thoughtfulness is appreciated and acknowledged. - To those who contributed funds, to the Care Center and elsewhere, thanks for your generosity. - To all who attended Ray's service, offered support, some who travelled a long distance, many, many thanks. Growing up on the prairies, it was common to have a Chinese restaurant in ever y town, city a n d r u r a l v i l l a g e. As a result, we have developed an appreciation for Chinese food, and it has been integrated into our prairie food culture. It turns out that the Chinese food

Vegetable Fried Rice

that we eat, is actual a westernized version of Chinese food. Last week my recipe was for naked egg rolls, which is a main dish that c an be ser ved with white r i c e, or fried rice. Here is a great recipe to make fried rice at home in your fr y pan or wok. To complete the meal, add a stir fry of vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, thin diagonally sliced carrots, largely chopped onion, mushroom, baby corn and pea pods. Watch for my upcoming stir fry vegetable recipe. Sesame oil c o m e t o a s te d o r untoasted. It is the toasted oil that is a cooking staple in Asian and Chinese cooking. Unlike other

oils, toasted sesame oil is used as a seasoning, rather than a cooking oil, and it is added at the end. Oyster sauce is a caramelized sauce, made from oyster s, but you don’t really taste oysters, instead it tastes like a sweet and salty caramelization in a thick sauce. It adds a unique flavour to fried rice. You can use fish sauce instead of oyster sauce. Fish sauce is very salty, and is made of fermented fish, usually an c hovies. Fish salt does have a fish taste, and it is a thinner sauce. Soy sauce is made from fermented soy beans. It does contain wheal, but for a gluten free option, soy sauce can be substituted for tamari sauce. This fried rice tastes so amazing and it is rich in flavour. It is better mad e with d ay old ri c e from your refrigerator, as cooled rice develops resistant starch, which has a lower

glycemic index, thus a smaller spike of blo o d sug ar, les s c alor ies and excellent food for our gut microbiome, which is largely our immune system. This has me appreciating the benefits of fried rice, in a whole new light. Chinese Vegetable Fried Rice 1 tablespoon oil – canola or olive 1/2 cup peas 1 cup carrots chopped small 1/2 cup onions chopped 2 cloves garlic chopped 1 tablespoon butter 2 eggs uncooked scrambled 3 - 4 cups cooked white rice 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon oyster or fish sauce 1 teaspoon sesame oil Salt to taste. In a heav y bot tomed fr y pan, ad d the oil, peas, c arrots, onion, garlic and cook on medium heat covered, until the carrots are almost cooked. Push the vegetables to half of the pan, add 1 tablespoon butter, and then cook the scrambled egg, making sure the egg is chopped into small pieces. Add in the rice, and stir to blend the rice into the vegetable a n d e g g m i x tur e. Add in the soya sauce, pepper and oyster sau c e and s t i r t o d i s t r i b u te. Finish the dish with the sesame oil, salt to taste and stir to blend.

In the early 1920s, if you wanted to play hockey or go skating, you tended to use an outdoor rink or you went to a pond to skate. This meant your enjoyment of hockey or skating was tied directly to the weather. That all changed for the residents of Vermilion in October 1927 when the community’s new municipal rink and gymnasium was completed. This had been a project for the community for a decade, and it was no

Hairdos…and don’ts Sometimes the latest hair trends leave me baffled. Take a recent one for boys. Both sides are razored off close to the head, leaving hair in roughly a three-inch wide strip, long. So long, it can be braided or put into a short and highly unusual ponytail. If, however, it’s left to its own devices, the hair lops over one eye, interfering with the child’s vision. This requires a frequent, exaggerated flicking motion to allow a brief window of sight, often causing an awkward reconfiguration of the head and neck. Clearly, any discomfort, spinal column displacement, or associated whiplash is deemed a worthwhile sacrifice when considering the overall esthetic effect. When I was a kid, no allowances were made for personal expression with hairstyle. There were no outlandish looks or wild colours for this girl. No keeping with the current fashions or following the cuts promoted by movie stars. For me, haircuts consisted of a hurried

When Vermilion Got A New Rink

small task to get this rink constructed. The rink was built to a size of 96 feet by 204 feet, with an ice surface of 180 feet by 80 feet that included an eight-foot promenade on each side. The gymnasium was on the upper floor and had all the modern conveniences. The structure was also totally self-contained and used a hot-air heating system to keep everyone warm as they watched hockey or skating. The rink was described as one of the finest of its kind outside the large centres of the province. It was also one of the biggest rinks for its time on the CNR line in Western Canada. To get the rink built, the finance commit-

tee began to canvas the town and local farmers to raise money that was put into an account for the construction and maintenance of the rink. In all, $10,000 was raised to build the rink. That was no small amount. Today, it would be about $170,000. A lot of credit went to Joseph McKone, who was well known in sporting circles in the area, who served as the chairman of the rink committee and got a lot of money raised for it. A lot of money was saved in the building of the rink because of the use of Ownie Burns, a local contractor who lowered his rate and the fact that half the labour was

done by volunteers from the town and farmers from outside the community. It is estimated, in today’s funds, that saved the committee upwards of $10,000 to $20,000. While the rink was finished in October of 1927, it would not be until Dec. 1 that it would be officially opened for use by the public. Finally, I was hauled through the door, plunked in the hairdresser’s chair, a voluminous plastic cape was flung over my shivering shoulders, and the hairdresser advanced upon me, brandishing her gleaming implements. One hour later, after what remained of my hair was set, teased, backcombed, and I had coughed through enough hairspray to choke a horse, I recall dashing out to the truck to consult my reflection in the rear-view mirror. Moaning in horror, I took it all in. Yup, no doubt about it, there she was – Marg in all her glory. My young daughter has her own ideas

April 1, 1961 ~ October 17, 2021 Bill Fehr passed away October 17, 2021 in Edmonton at the age of 60 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Cheryl Ann MacPhee-Fehr; daughters Kendra Marie Fehr (Mike Kinney) and Kassidy Brooke Fehr; step-daughter Tiffanie Rae Knudsen; granddaughter Abigail Rose Marie Kinney; siblings Jason Nowosad, Rick (Tina) Wall, Katherine (Matt) Farkash, Maria Lecomte, Helen (Ray) Earle, and Agnes (Hank) Derksen; mother in law Anna Marie MacPhee; best friends Cory Nydokus and Mark Koopman; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. T h e Ve r m i l i o n M a s o n i c L o d g e , s pe c ial d ig nit ar ies Vi c e Chair man Chris Batty and Treasurer Fred Bowker of the Alberta Masonic Higher Education Bursary Fund, along with District Deputy Grand Master Sig Guggenmoos for the Lakeland District presented Masonic Higher Education Bursaries on June 28 to three well-deserving and thankful recipients for $10,000 each. According to the bursar y website http://mhebf.com/ the Alberta Masonic Higher Education Bursary Fund recognizes, promotes, and supports excellence in education for the benefit of humanity. In general, the bursaries are awarded to students at the postsecondar y level in Alber ta and the Northwest Territories and are awarded on the basis of need and proven scholastic ability. The three bursaries that were awarded on Tuesday evening were f r o m t h e Fr e d a n d L i l l y M a s o n i c Bursary and were presented by Lakeland District Deputy Grand Master Sig Guggenmoos. The presentation began with the Treasurer, of t he A l b er t a M aso ni c Higher Education Bursary Fund, Fred Bowker explaining the Fred and Lilly

Masonic Bursary. “A local individual from Kitscoty by the name of Fred North decided in 2018 to give back to the community after his success in the working area. Fred was a student that started his education in Kitscoty which he left early. Fred was told the value of an education would catch up with him, but he happened to be quite successful in his endeavours and started a bursary that he respectfully called the Fred and Lilly Masonic Bursary,” explained Bowker. H e w e n t o n t o ex p l a i n t h a t t h e Free Masons of Alberta manages the bursary for Fred and that he gives two bursaries annually to one student from Kitscoty High School and another to a high school graduate from Lloydminster Comprehensive High School. Due to only one applicant last year the Vermilion Masonic Lodge was able to present three this year instead of just two. “It is very fortunate for us to have three applicants this year and have the extra bursary to give,” commented Bowker. The three recipients of this year’s Fred and Lilly Masonic Bursary were twin sisters Destiny and Alexis Braun from Kitscoty who attended Lloydminster Comprehensive High School, and

Local Cowboy Heading To Finals

Submitted This summer local cowboy, Trey Nowosad, has the chance to compete in two of the biggest competitions for high school students. He will be attending the National High School Rodeo Association finals in Gillette, Wyoming, which takes place in July, and the Canadian High School Rodeo Association finals in Swift Current, SK. in August. Along with his partner, Brody Groves of Cadogan, AB. they will try to win the Team Roping championship. Trey has been a cowboy his whole life. He has grown up in the saddle, riding as often as he could. With his dad, Malcolm,

being a team roper Trey was naturally given a rope so that he could learn as well. From a young age Trey has been a competitor. He became a member of the Little Cowpokes Junior Rodeo Association at the young age of 3. He was able to hone his skills through these rodeos and many other competitions over the years. When he was in grade 6, he and his team roping partner at that time were able to capture the Saskatchewan Junior High School Team Roping title. This year, Trey and his partner, Brody, competed at many Saskatchewan High School rodeos throughout the fall and spring for the chance to move on and

compete at the national and canadian finals. The boys had a good run throughout the rodeo season and placed within the top 4 which is what is needed in order to qualify for the event. The boys are very excited to have the opportunity to showcase their talents with other contestants from across Nor th America.

Agricultural Producers Now Eligible To Receive Farmcash

Alberta Wheat Commission Submitted

Effective as of June 20, 2022, agricultural producers who apply for the Advance Payments Program (APP) through FarmCash are now eligible to receive the first $250,000 of their advance interest-free. This change to the interest-free portion, announced today by the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, provides additional support to Canadian agricultural producers affected by high input costs and the lingering impact of the 2021 drought. Today’s announcement, affecting the 2022 and 2023 program years, is one of a series of recent temporary measures announced by the Government of Canada in response to all-time high commodity input expenses and cash flow shortages.

AAFC’s previous announcements of increased advance rates and eligibility for producers to receive the entirety of their advance upfront upon the approval of their application, have been as welcomed as the recent rain on parched soils. “Producers’ cash flow has been hit hard over the last year by the widespread drought conditions and now the rising costs of fuel, seed, and in crop management,” says Alberta Wheat Commission chair Greg Sears. “Canadian producers are proud to step up and support the national and global food supply, but we need the business risk management tools in place to be able to do what we do best, the cost savings instilled by this change will ensure we are set up for success.” Producers who have applied to FarmCash for a cash advance beginning June 20, 2022, can expect to hear more details

Saturday morning was kicked-off with the Chamber of Commerce pancake breakfast and Provost parade, followed by an action packed day where attendees were on the edge of their seats with the CMRO

Adults could also enjoy the all day beer gardens, and a Saturday night social presented by the Splash Park Fundraising Committee. The Town of Vermilion welcomed a new bakery and bistro to Vermilion with two plaques on June 30. One plaque was the welcome plaque which the Town provides to all new businesses and the second plaque was presented as the new bakery was a successful applicant of the Retail Development Incentive Program. There was a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Darren Bezanson owner of the Prairie Bakeshop and Bistro was born and raised in the small town of Revelstoke in British Columbia and went to culinary school when he was 19 years old. “I have worked with several different chefs and got to put my hands into a little bit of everything, but when I went to Vancou-

ver Island I met pastry chef Christine Lillyholm and she was really into pastries, so I started watching, learning and absorbing everything and started getting really into it. I kind of always wanted to be a pastry chef and working with her reaffirmed my passion to become a baker,” commented Bezanson. Bezanson and his wife Teresa owned a full service restaurant in BC before moving to Vermilion but like many small businesses during COVID they took a huge hit and he mentioned he was working a lot more hours and he just wasn’t happy. “It felt like a job and just wasn’t fulfilling and I wasn’t enjoying it anymore, so we my wife and I were talking about what we should do during that time. I always wanted to be a baker or pastry chef so

Congratulations to our 2022 Graduates! Ceremonies were held on Wednesday, June 29 at the school. Their chosen theme was “Life is a Highway” and the decorating committee did a fantastic job of setting up the gym. We wish all our graduates the best in all their future plans, whether they go on to further their education, enter the work force or go on exciting adventures. We wish to thank teachers Colby Tyner, Raelynn Falcon and Madison Nelson for filling-in maternity leave positions this school year. And also Elizabeth Plain who filled in for Ms. To while she was on

On June 24, we celebrated literacy all day. Celebrating our reading to build skills and for enjoyment is so important. We started with an assembly. Mrs. Tomkins thanked Fat Cat and the Vermilion Credit Union for their continued support. Students reached a total of 12 163.4 AR points in total for this year. Gift cards were given to the top readers of each class - Grade 2 - Theo Visser (190 points), Grade 3 - Raidyn Forsyth (95.4 points), Grade 4 - Josiah Williams (376 points), Grade 5 - Douglas Romeo (514.4 points), Grade 6 Grace Freeman (421.9 points). A draw was made for Grade 1 readers and Jalal Elkadry won it. Each of these students were given a gift card from Indigo Books. The top reader from division 1 was Liam McKinnon (209.9 points) and Penelope Donily was the top reader in division 2 with 630.4 points. These two students were presented with a cheque from Vermilion Credit Union. We wished Mrs. Moses, Mrs. McLean and Mrs. Tomkins the best, as these three ladies will not be at our

school next year. After the formal part of the assembly, we had a dance, with Mr. Beecroft, Mrs. Tupper, Mrs. Zaharko, Mrs. Forbes, Mrs. Joa, Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Doherty leading the dance moves. From there, each class got to participate in several stations set up like a country fair. Stations such as horse races, ring tossing, egg races, feed the piggy, etc. were set up for students to enjoy. A family picnic took place during the lunch hour. After lunch, a family bingo entertained everyone for about an hour. We would like to thank all the families for coming to our school to help us celebrate literacy. Kindergarten Grad took place on June 27. Both KA and KB celebrated together. They performed three songs and a poem, and then received their certificates. Many family members were in attendance. Grade 1 went to the Provincial Park on June 27. They had fun exploring the river, trying mini golf, and having some playground fun. Thankfully, the weather was very cooperative. June 28 was when Grade 6 had their fare-

well celebration. Both classes celebrated together with their families present. School Trustee Jim King and Principal Sheila Doherty gave speeches. Grade 6 students sang a song and each received their Grade 6 certificates. Students awards were passed out: Attendance – Jill Chmielewski-Tremblay and Beaudon Tupper; Mad Scientist – Luke Guenthner and Edwin Sanford; Artistic Award – Connor Wandler and Lily Rumbolt; Athletics and Sportsmanship – Grady Cameron and Zack Mewis; Honor Roll Royalties – Maleah Eyben and Jasmine Stachniak; Citizenship – Ziena Messal and McKenna McLachlan. Jill Chmielewski-Tremblay and Denver Nelson were the recipients of the Becky Scott Award. After the ceremony, students boarded a bus and went to the Vermilion Lodge, where they had a visit with the seniors and sang their song for them. Congratulations to all of our Grade 6 students. Meet our Pet of the Week, Chandler she is a Flemish Giant Rabbit. I'm a pretty chill rabbit, I enjoy hopping around, lounging on cool floors, and munching on vegetables. I also enjoy pets and occasionally enjoy being held. Many people don't know this but Rabbits are similar to cats when it comes to owning one, we don't need to be locked in a cage and we are able to be litter trained! If you aren't interested in a free-roam rabbit then I need a MINIMUM 30" by 36" area. I should never be left in that cage at all times. I need daily exercise to stay healthy, and to prevent physical or behavioral disorders. I should be let out into a larger EXERCISE AREA to run, jump and move around for at least a few hours every day. If you don’t want to give me free access to the home, you can buy a pen or make one with exercise fencing panels for dogs, which are found at most pet stores. The pen should be at least 3 feet tall.
