Vermilion 4-H Beef Club Achievement Day

Under beautiful sunny skies and warm weather, the Vermilion 4-H Beef Club held their annual Achievement Day on May 29, at the Vermilion Fair Grounds. After months of working tirelessly to get their project animals ready to show, the 4H members had the opportunity to show off their animals. Members aged 9-18, and cleaver kids sported their well-rounded steers, heifers, and 2 and 3-year-old cow/calf pairs. Judge Owen
Legaarden viewed the well-groomed animals which showed the skills the members have learned in halter breaking, grooming and clipping techniques. He also had the opportunity to view the member’s animals to see how their decisions in choosing the right animal and their skills in caring for and feeding their project animal had produced well-defined animals. The show started at 9 a.m. but the members were on-site early to give their project animal a well-deserved spa day so that their animal looked its
absolute best. The 4-H members were broken down into junior, intermediate, and senior classes with the winner of each class moving on to be the overall champion. The club offered a lunch and award presentations. Haylee Cusack was awarded the Club Champion Steer - sponsored by Misty Hills Charolais, and Sophie Hinton was awarded the Reser ve Club Champion Steer - sponsored by Vermilion Vet Clinic. Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club

Under beautiful sunny skies and warm weather, the Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club held their 57th Annual Show and Sale on May 25, at the Minburn Ag Grounds. The show began at 2 p.m., with supper sponsored by Rocky Mountain Equipment at 5 p.m. and the sale at 6:30 p.m. After months of working diligently to get their project animals ready to show, the 4-H members presented their animals to Judge Dave Durie for conformation and Judge Kaylie Anderson for showmanship and grooming. Members aged 9-18 sported their well-rounded steers, heifers, and 2 and 3-year-old cow/calf pairs. The show
judge viewed the well-groomed animals which showed the skills the members have learned in halter breaking, grooming and clipping techniques. He’s been lots of fun to train, even when he’s being stubborn,” stated Dylan Garnier. Katrina McLaughlin stated, “my project animal is Hailey. She acts super nervous and shy around people, but when she is alone she
is energetic like most calves are. She is super cute though. Hailey is a black calf with a white blaze on her face.” Rylan Jackson won Grand Champion Steer, Camille Kassian won the Reserve Champion Steer, Brad McLaughlin took the Grand Champion Female, as well as the Reserve Champion Female. Courage Canada Trail Ride A Success

Curtis Anderson and his supporters hit the trails for the 17th Annual Courage Canada Trail Ride to Support Brain Injury on Saturday, May 28. Under blue skies and sunshine, a good support of riders on horseback and wagons full of participants had the opportunity to meander their way through beautiful trails to support a very important cause to Curtis Anderson an Extremely
Severe Traumatic Brain Injury survivor and organizer of the Courage Canada Trail Ride. “We had a great turnout this year, and we had new participants on the ride, as well as new attendees for the supper. It was a great day and we raised a lot of awareness about brain injuries and the survivors; it is what this ride is all about,” commented Anderson. Anderson was also pleased that survivors from FOCUS in Vermilion and VALID
from Vegreville had the opportunity to attend the event. The ride ended with a roast beef supper, dance, and a silent auction, that had live music performed by Dusty Golden Saturday evening. The Cowboy Church was held the following day. “I wanted to give other Brain Injury survivors a chance to be around horses and spend time in the sunshine. The trail ride consisted of a 10-mile ride on pasture, and then we went to the Innisfree
Recreation Centre for a big roast beef supper and a silent and live auction. The trail ride was also a great family-friendly event,” explained Anderson. Anderson also commented that he would like to thank all the supporters of the Courage Canada Trail Ride over the years, and that with all their help he is able to raise funds to help Brain Injury survivors go on field trips through the organizations he supports and helps bring the survivors to the ride again the next year.

The Vermilion Lions Club hosted their annual Walk for Dog Guides event at the CN station in the Vermilion Provincial Park on May 29, sign in was at 1 p.m. and the walk started at 2 p.m. The walk was a family and dog-friendly event that welcomed participants of all ages and abilities. The walk raised funds to help provide life-changing Dog Guides to Canadians with varying medical and physical disabilities such as canine vision, hearing, service, seizure response, Autism assistance, diabetic alert and facility support. Onehundred percent of the funds raised will go towards the training and placement of Dog Guides, and since 1985 Walk for Dog Guides have raised more than $15 million. According to Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, the event has been carried out for more than 32 years, and the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides has been a vital national fundraiser in support of Lions

Passed away at Vermilion Health Centre, Vermilion, Alberta on May 12, 2022, at the age of 92. Beulah is lovingly remembered by: her children, Patrick Stannard, Perry (Jessel) Stannard, Penny Stannard and Pamela Brost; grandchildren, Ian Tindall (Valerie Burgess), Sarah Brost (Tim Kublik) and Tanner Brost (Tori Shannon); great granddaughter, Abigail Alice Kublik; sisters, Shirley (Jim) Bateman and Marlene Schultz; brother, Jerry Quast; sister-in-law, Maureen LePage; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Beulah is predeceased by: her parents, Alex and Mary Quast; her husband, Jack; daughter-in-law, Sharon Nogier; grandson, Mark Tindall; brother, George (Mary) Quast; brother-in-law, Gordon Schultz; sister-in-law, Dorrie Quast. Beulah was born in Coronation, AB. After high school, she worked at the weather station in Lac La Biche for several years. She moved to Edmonton and met Dad curling in 1958. They were married within 6 months and had 4 kids in 5 years! They lived in Fort Saskatchewan, then moved to an acreage near Josephburg. From there, they moved the family to Dewberry and ran the Dewberry Hotel. Then they moved to Marwayne where Beulah owned and operated Stop 'n' Shop Varieties for 42 years. The last few years, she lived in Vermilion. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, knitting, and playing cards. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips with family. The Funeral Service for Beulah was conducted from Marwayne Legion Hall, Marwayne, Alberta on Thursday, May 19, 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Beulah may be made to Alzheimer's Society, Canadian Cancer Society or charity of the donor's choice. McCaw Funeral Service Ltd., of Lloydminster, AB, administered the funeral arrangements. (Vermilion, Alta.) The Lakeland College applied research team is pleased to announce that two of their projects have been successful in their bid to receive additional funding from the Government of Alberta through Alberta Innovates. “Lakeland’s agricultural research is a critical part of what we offer to our region and province. Our research team is creating paths for increased productivity and sustainability with the work they do and the partnerships cultivated,” says Dr. Alice Wainwright-
Stewart, president and CEO of the college. “I am so pleased that Alberta Innovates recognizes and chooses to invest in the important work we are doing to present real solutions to real problems producers face.” The funds are part of the Smart Agriculture and Food Digitization and Automation Challenge (SAFDAC), which awarded a total of $3.19 million to 10 new smart-ag and food projects. Fifty organizations expressed interest in the contest, with 16 submitting a full proposal. Lakeland’s two projects were awarded $497,600, split between them. Lakeland researcher Dr. Susan Markus’
project investigating the use of handheld devices for automatic blood analysis to monitor sheep pregnancy and predict litter size was awarded $145,000. Dr. Yuri Montanholi’s project optimizing non-contact sensing technologies to enhance sustainability of bison farming was awarded $345,081. “Thank you to Alberta Innovates and the Government of Alberta for investing in these two important research projects,” says Dr. François Paradis, Lakeland’s new director of applied research. “With your support, we will be able to advance the industry’s best practices for bison herd management and pursue innovative and practical technology to enhance reproductive management in ewes. We are always proud when our research results in tangible information for the producers we work alongside and can’t wait to see the results from these projects.” SAFDAC’s mission is to support the development of sustainable, smart technologies to increase productivity. Projects they chose to support included hyperspectral optics camera to offer continuous information from Space. Other successful projects included mobile inelastic neutron scattering, an A.I. data recording kit that automates farm machinery, among others. Lakeland supports applied research to enhance the agriculture industry’s productivity, profitability and competitiveness, support student learning outcomes, and enhance social, environmental and economic outcomes in Alberta and beyond. Areas of focus include key commercial crop and livestock species, as well as agriculture technology. There are currently 39 active projects and 78 unique research partnerships at Lakeland.

Lakeland Rowing Hosts Come Try Rowing Day

A Canada wide event, L akeland Rowing Club was one of twenty three clubs to host the National Come Try Rowing event on May 28. Under a beautiful blue sk y, ten par ticipants from Vermilion, Mannville, Marwayne Wainwright and Edmonton came to check out what rowing is all about.

The club will be offering a full Learn to Row (LTR) session in the next few weeks, and many of Saturday’s participants have indicated they will be signing up for it. A ny o n e i n t e r e s t e d i n j o i n ing the club for the LTR session should watch the club’s Facebook page for more details.

Emergency Measures Amateur Radio Station Comes To Lt Col Craig Armories

The Sask-Alta Radio Club plans to install an Amateur Radio station at the Lt Col WC Craig Armouries to support the Vermilion area. The Station covers the high through ultra-high frequencies and will integrate with the Winlink®️ system which allows stations to efficiently pass messages. The Winlink system was developed to allow remote stations to pass email to each other, independent of the internet. It has developed further into a worldwide system of stations that can receive satellite weather pictures and automatically pass messages error free. Similarly equipped emergency shelters can pass names of people and their medical requirements. “If you know how to send email, then about 20 minutes more training can have a person passing Winlink messages. The HF radio we have picked for this duty is an ICOM 7200, a 100 watt radio, that’s less power than a old style 100 watt light bulb.” says Don Henry, Emergency Measures Director for the SaskAlta Radio Club. “With the right antenna, this radio will give North America, if not worldwide coverage.” But Don recommends a solid 500-1000 km footprint. “While it’s nice to sit in my home station and rag chew with a station in England or Australia on a cold winter night, those people cannot really help me as much as the Red Cross in Calgary or the AEMA (Alberta Em er g e n cy M anag e m e nt Ag e n cy) station in Edmonton in an emergency.” says Henry. Currently, the club has 3 Winlink VHF radio digipeaters: one at Mount Joy Ski Hill, another at Mouse Mountain Hill north of Elk Point, and one in downtown Lloydminster. The Armouries station completes this network. Years previous, the City of Lloydminster bought three portable VHF Winlink stations for the Sask-Alta Radio Club for quick deployment around the city. The station came complete with radios, laptop and the TNC (terminal node controller). The Club has mutual aid

Keto – Gluten Free – Dairy Free Chocolate Zucchini Bars 1/2 cup coconut flour 3 tablespoons cocoa power 1/2 cup monk fruit sweetener 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup grated zucchini 3/4 cup hot water 3 tablespoons coconut oil 3 large eggs Combine all the dry ingredients and stir. Melt the coconut oil into the hot water, and then stir it into the dry ingredients, and beat the 3 eggs into the batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Allow to cool and then refrigerate before serving.
How Tech Companies Are Teaming Up To Erase Passwords Online
Passwords have been the digital standard since the earliest days of computing. Recently tech giants Google, A p p l e, an d M i c ro s of t an n o u n c e d a joint effort to completely eradicate the need for passwords on the internet. This announcement expressed these companies’ focus on fixing the biggest security problem on the web; passwordonly authentication. Managing so many passwords can be cumbersome; so
it’s no wonder why many people opt to reuse their passwords across services. Reusing the same password saves time as there is no trying to remember what you set before logging in. However, this is more convenient, it is exactly the type of environment hackers thrive on when attempting to gain access to accounts. If these hackers are able to crack one password they gain access to a plethora of online accounts from different services. There have been previous attempts to make online accounts more secure
throughout the years. A couple examples of our best options currently are email and tex t verification on login. These systems do work to increase security of accounts; however they have the unwanted ef fect of adding more complexity to the sign in process. The newly proposed solution from these major tech companies is to have you use your phone to sign into every account. Although the specifics of how this new system will work are not fully available the general user flow is pretty clear. When logging into an account
you will receive a notification on your phone, you will then be prompted to use your fingerprint scanner to verify your identity. This new system could not be simpler.

Sometimes they can have amazing stories tied to them, but really it is just an opportunity to make someone live once again. Today, I am looking at J.H. Bell. Born in Belfast, Ireland, Bell came to Canada very early in his life. He would

attend the prestigious McGill Universit y where he earned a bachelor ’s degree and was described as being in high standing. After he graduated, he took courses in theology and medicine before going off to do foreign mission work. He would then become the rector of the Anglican Church at Atlene, Quebec and then three years later he went to be the rector at North Whitefield, where he remained for eight years. He then served as the rector at Sutton, Quebec for nine years.

An Apple a Day Old-fashioned remedies are mak ing a c omebac k. Those tried and true tonics handed down from the trusted hands of great-grandma weren’t really so bad, were they? Perhaps a few are still worth considering. Others could cheerfully be tossed out the door. Here’s a small admission before we begin – the only real vice I’ve ever had was salt. I’ve said it, and you may quote me, my name is Helen, and I am a salt-aholic. However, in my defense, salt not only flavours our food but can be dissolved in warm water and gargled for sore throats. Of course, it wasn’t enjoyable, but it didn’t hurt anything if accidently swallowed. And, as my mother always said, with a dismissive wave of her hand and a quelling look, “Quit your moaning. It’s doing you some good.” What about sucking on a teaspoon of honey for coughs? That was one I didn’t mind as a kid. I’ve even been known to dispense the odd spoon to my own children. In theory, it’s supposed to soothe and lubricate the throat. Not sure that it does, mind you, but it cuts down on whining and makes a tasty treat. Here’s one you may not have heard of; apple juice to ward off the common cold. Frankly, I think it was a belief held exclusively by my mother. If ever my brother Bill or I would make the dreadful mistake of coughing, mom’s head would snap up, and she’d bark, “You kids get a cup and pour yourselves a big glass of apple juice – or twenty.” We couldn’t even clear our 3” wide version throats or choke on a crumb without fearing

In 1911, he decided it was time to retire and he moved to Vermilion where he took up a farm west of town. Despite being retired, he didn’t stop working and he would be appointed as the postmaster for Vermilion in 1912. For the next 17 years, he would faithfully deliver the mail and he would earn high praise from the postal authorities and the public for the dedication that he showed to his job. Throughout his time as postmaster, he would take an active interest in everything to do with the town. He would pass away on Nov. 8, 1929,

Oh, I know, let’s wrap your tender young skin with this abrasive, unbearably scratchy, old woolen sock your father hauled off his foot late last night. Hold still while I fasten it over your heart with this threeinch safety pin. Yes…that will do nicely.” Another memory is of a small measure of brandy administered to me by my beloved father. In his all-seeing wisdom, he recalled this unusual remedy for indigestion from somewhere in his strict English upbringing. Perhaps it held curative powers highly

Harding at a large parish in England. Walking Through Grief Society Submitted
June is the month that we honour and remember fathers. A father has a great responsibility in the role modelling of the Man image. They are teacher, provider, fixer and need to be both strong and yet kind and compassionate and a good listener. In their strength, they are a safe place, not a place of fear or harshness. They are to be a balance of strength/gentleness and teacher/learner and fixer yet know their own limits. This is a big role to fill and some fathers will be remembered for being a positive role model while others will be remembered for more of a harsh presence. In June, there can be an opportunity to reflect on the positive good memories but also a time to deal with the negative relationships that are still causing mental anguish. Often the stuffed down emotions are the cause of grief, pain, hurt and anger, which can continue to have effects generation after generation. Giving these emotion

a “name” and a space for reflection can help with addressing these effects. An additional step can be finding a safe person to share your experiences. A family member friend, or trusted other may support you in being honest about what you are feeling and where these feelings are harbored. Emotions such as disappointment, fear, rejection, a b a n d o n m e nt , i s o l at i o n a n d m ore are the fuel that fires your Volcano. So perhaps this is the “Father’s Day” to move for ward, empty the stuffed bag and release, and maybe even to forgive so you can know freedom. If you seek to honour your father during a period of grief, this can also pose questions about how to address the inevitable emotion. When the world is turned upside down and inside out the strongest of men can be shaken by the death of a parent, child, spouse, family member, friend or a relationship that ceases and is broken. When we feel like our dreams have also died, there is the thought of what the future

mig ht have been or what the past could have been. When losses are experienced one is left vulnerable and naked, so to speak. IF you are grieving the loss of your father during this Father’s Day, you may wonder how can strength be modeled in the midst of such loss and pain. The my th in societ y is that big boys don’t cry and tough it out. That is an impossible demand when one’s heart is broken. It i s k n ow n t h ere are d i f fere nt grieving patterns between man and woman and many factors that affect how one grieves Take heart, there is no one way to grieve nor is there a right or wrong way or specific time to be over grieving. There are good coping skills one can learn so that there is no need to stay stuck on the grief journey. Never be afraid to reach out and learn some skills to help heal and become healthy and whole again. Don’t stuff your emotions but find
a healthy way to work through your grief, there is strength is what you may believe appears weakness. Find understanding friends, read, and seek out a counsellor or support group. Refrain from self medicating with substances for it only delays the grief process. A process that will need to be dealt with, sometimes years later. Find some routine in the out of control world. Your loss and grief is unique and cannot be compared to anyone else’s ( your personality, other loses, coping mechanisms, age, attitude social supports, and the acceptance of the myth of expectations that MAN is strong and without emotions) Commit to doing “grief work” Is Grief Work hard? Yes, it’s the hardest work you will ever do but it is wor th it to become healthy and whole, and role model all aspects of what it means to be a man and father.

Cadets Enhance Their Survival Skills

The Vermilion and St. Paul Cadet Corps. spent May 28 together at the Vermilion Provincial Park group campsite and participated in Bivouac (BIV) training. A BIvouac is a temporary military encampment, with few facilities, and encompassing tents as the primary shelters in place. This all day training gave eighteen cadets the opportunity to learn how to set up such a camp and establish a few survival skills.
Cadets were instructed on how to set up both five man and single man tents as well as how to safely manage gas stoves and lanterns. The cadets set up camp, prepared their own lunches, and then dismantled their camp. Not only were cadets given the chance to practice camp setup and takedown, they were also provided the opportunity to learn from each other, with cadets taking advantage of some teachable moments like gas lantern maintenance for the whole group.

Vermilion Strikers Host Tournament

Hundreds of kids descended on the soccer fields at the Vermilion Provincial Park May 28 and 29 for the first tournament of the 2022 season. With 43 teams of U7, U9 and U11 age groups, over 500 athletes and their families enjoyed a carnival like atmosphere with multiple games, skill stations, prizes, vending stations and camping facilities. Under blue skies, teams from the Lakeland Region were able to not only show their soccer savvy on the pitch, the Town also shone for out of town visitors, many expressed that the event provided a very welcome return to Vermilion since the pandemic lockdown, citing the town’s picturesque location and convenient facilities as a large draw. Tournament coordinator Renee Tjardes commented on the level of support from the community, “We are so thankful to all the businesses for their generous support. Everyone we approached was immediate in
their response to contribute. It really speaks to how much this community gets behind an opportunity to improve the wellbeing of our kids.” The size of the event required no shortage of hard work and organization behind the scenes from a small army of volunteers. There were 58 volunteer positions to be filled. They covered everything from administration, field crews, referees, and concessions. Vermilion Soccer association president Gordon Barrett summarized, “I have to say that the contributions of volunteers has been above and beyond. The success of this event has only been possible due to a collective response of new volunteers bringing their passion with old members providing guidance. I can’t emphasize enough the value of all their hard work. It’s a joy to be at the fields with families that are third or fourth generation involved alongside brand new families. This event has really impressed upon me how much Vermilion’s soccer is really cherished in this community”.

The field at J.R. Robson was busy May 26 with students from across the Count y of Vermilion River and the County of Minburn competing in the Highway 16 Jr. High Track Meet. Students competed in most traditional track and field events, including discus and shotput. Buffalo Trail students who placed in the top four during Thursday’s

One of the first meets of the season, the Viper Swim Club hosted eight swim clubs from around the Northeast Region at the Colonel Cormack Recreation Centre on May 28. The Club was very glad to host their annual event after a two year hiatus. Swimmers of all ages competed in heats with friends and family able to watch in person. The first meet in three years held by the Vipers, coaches and swimmers were excited to be back in action. For the Vipers, 21 of their 44 swimmers competed on Saturday with over half of them competing in their first swim meet ever, and they had a blast according to
coach Rebecca Zajic. Clubs participating this year included the Camrose Sea Serpents, Sherwood Park Millennium Marlins, Lloydminster Rebels, Wainwright Torpedoes, Edmonton Huma, Fort Saskatchewan Piranhas, Derrick Devil-Rays, and the Wetaskiwen Olympians. There were 133 swimmers, who participated in over 500 events throughout the day. The club was able to show off the new swim ropes, which replaced the ones purchased in the 1980’s. The club would like to give thanks to the Town of Vermilion Parks and Recreation Board Grant, County of Vermilion River Grant and the Vermilion Rotary Club for their sponsorship for the Swim Club Ropes.

It’s amazing how time flies when you are having fun! As this year winds down, the staff at St. J is determined to cram in as much learning and adventure as possible! May 18 was Caretaker Appreciation Day and it is no secret that we have THE BEST caretakers around! Mr. and Mrs. Dekker are a husband and wife dream-team whose hard work and dedication to St. Jerome’s School is obvious in the care that they show. We are very grateful to them both and as a way to show them how much we love them, the students in grade 1S made a book called “What Do Our Custodians Do All Day?” The writing and illustrations were done by the students. After reading nonfiction books about custodians and the tools they use, the students were better able to appreciate all of their efforts. At lunchtime, we called Mr. & Mrs. Dekker to the gathering area to present them with their book and then send them home to take the rest of the day off! The students and staff worked to make the school sparkle and Mr. & Mrs. Dekker really appreciated everyone’s efforts! Elementary students at St. J worked hard memorizing and practicing poems to recite in front of their class for the school’s annual Declamation event. Each student in grades 1-5 were tasked with the job of reciting a poem from memory, in front of their peers. The top finalists from each classroom, were sent to the finals! The best of the best, presented their poems in the gymnasium in front of friends and family. It was a wonderful event and we were happy to have the opportunity to do it again, in person.

Skip Club has been running after school every Tuesday throughout the month of May. Kids work on different skills in small groups and play various skipping games. It has been excellent exercise for our elementary aged Spartans. Junior High and High School Track and Field Events have been scattered throughout these past few weeks as well. They have had some beautiful sunshine but also weather like wind and rain, adding an additional level of grit required for the competition. The Grade 2A and 2/3 classes spent the morning at the Public Library on May 24. On this field trip, students participated in various activities that linked to their science curriculum. During the Boats and Buoyancy presentation, students discussed and experimented with a variety of sinkers and floaters. They also had the opportunity to design and create boats that would float and carry a load. Small Crawling and Flying Animals was the second topic which provided the students with the opportunity to observe, touch and discover more about the world of insects and arachnids. KA and KB visited AG Foods last week where they received a tour of the food departments, met the special people who work there and sampled some snacks from the different food groups. The kids also practiced their literacy and math skills by going on an alphabet hunt through the food isles and went searching for fruits and vegetables of different shapes and sizes. Thank you to Angie and staff for the fun adventure.
AR Celebration and Family Picnic will Grade 1-3 Field Trip; June 10 – Grade June 27 – Kindergarten Graduation; be on June 24. This is a day to celebrate 4-6 Field Trip; June 14-17 – Grade 6 June 28 – Grade 6 Farewell; June 29 literacy. A special part of this day will be PATs; June 24 – AR Celebration Day; Last Day of School for Students a family picnic. We invite parents to come in to take part in this fun lunch activity. Kindergarten Celebration will be June 27. Parents and grandparents will be invited to join the kindergarten students from 11:45 am to 12:30 pm in the gym. KA students will have their lunch early, and KB students will just be there for the celebration. Grade 6 Farewell will take place on June 28. Parents and grandparents will be invited to join their Grade 6 child in the gym for this celebration. The Kindergarten through Grade 5 students will be watching this through a Google Meet. Prior to the ceremony, the students will be honoured by the students of VES through a school-wide parade. Immediately after the celebration, the students will be going over to the Vermilion Valley Lodge for a short parade to connect with our seniors. Grade Six Tour Town Office

A few of the Town Council members were a little shorter in size on Friday May 27, as the Grade 6 classes from St. Jerome’s Catholic School spent some time at the Town of Vermilion Offices and Council Chambers learning how local municipalities are operated. The day began with a tour of the Town Hall and what each department is all about. The students were then taken
to Council Chambers and sat through a ended with a fun Kahoot quiz with current mock Council meeting.
