2022 Alberta Envirothon

Lakeland College hosted the 2022 Alberta Envirothon for the first time since its inception on May 4-6. Alberta Envirothon is an annual high school competition in which teams compete using their knowledge of environmental science and natural resources. The three-day event is North America’s largest high school environmental education competition, and according to www.albertaenvirothon.org, it is an effective educational tool, capable of supplementing environmental education inside and outside the classroom. The site also states, “It provides career insight and options in environmental and natural resource management.” The theme for this year’s event was ‘Waste To Resources’ and teams had to work through a series of field stations, written tests, and oral presentations, that were centered around five categories: aquatic

ecology, forestry, soils and land use, wildlife, and a current issue. Also, the website stated, that over 10 million people have participated across North America and China since its inception with 50,000 people from 4,000 high schools competing annually. “Teams are made up of (5-6) students usually with a teacher advisor, but not always. The teams that could join are 4H, Girl Guides or Scouts or Junior Forest Wardens, or those kind of community groups. We have had participation from those groups in the past, but we don’t have any this year for this competition so it just varies year to year. This year, we have six teams competing for the provincial championship,” commented Chantelle Bambrick, president of Alberta Envirothon. Bambrick continued by saying, “We are hoping that we can grow the competition, and ideally we would have 15 to 20 teams competing

for the bragging rights. The winning team of the provincial competition will go on to compete and represent Alberta in the International competition which is in Ohio this year in July. To win the competition each team must be tested and scored in the five components which is worth 50 per cent of the final score.

The trophies the top three teams would be awarded.

They must then present an oral scenario presentation based on a scenario provided relating to the current issue, which is worth the remaining 50 per cent. Final team placements will be determined by adding the test scores and the final oral presentation score. The top three teams will be awarded cash prizes and trophies.

Six months into his role as Mayor, Greg Throndson is still caught off guard when someone refers to him as “Mr. Mayor”. “I’m still Greg,” he states, “it’s ok to call me that.” While he has received many posit i ve a c c o l a d e s f r o m c o m m u n i t y members, Throndson is not naive and knows that there are people who have probably used other titles in the past half year to describe him. No politician can please everyone, and there are decisions that have been made that not all community members agree with. “No assassination attempts as far as I know though,” states Throndson jokingly, “so I must be doing ok.”

It’s Still Okay To Call Me Greg When asked if the job has met his expectations, Throndson responds with a very sincere “yes and no.” While he was aware of the workload, and the amount of meetings he would be part of, he didn’t truly know what to expec t in some aspec ts, and things have transitioned fairly smoothly with all the par tners, committees and community members he has worked with. It is a challenging yet enjoyable job, and Throndson looks forward to the meetings and committees he attends. Dear Editor, The Town Council of Vermilion will no longer provide the yard clippings dumpsters that have normally been put out each Spring and taken in in the Fall. The reasons include the “ tremendous success” of the individual bins provided to each household and the cost of repairing /replacing the

dumpsters. The individual bins have been a boon to some, but not to all. I don’t use ours. It sits in the alley behind the house. There’s no appeal to me to add yet another garbage bin to my yard. An Air Show For The Governor General

On May 25, 1948, Vermilion received an important visitor when the Governor General, the Viscount Alexander of Tunis, came to the community. I touched on this briefly in a previous column but I didn’t talk much about the air show. So, that is what we are looking at this week. Air Vice Marshall K.M. Guthrie, the commander of the Nor th West Air Command, arranged to have the air show presented for the Governor General. For the air show, thousands of people came out to see the various demonstrations and planes. One plane would be a jet that was flying from Edmonton to Saskatoon. Arrangements were made for the jet to circle the exhibition grounds several times so everyone could see it in action. One of three helicopters based in western Canada would also be at the air show. A para-rescue demonstration would be held as men dropped from the skies

in front of the grandstand to demonstrate the work they accomplished during the Second World War. Various bombers would also be at the air show and would go through their paces to the delight of residents. In my previous column, I mentioned that the Governor General would open the new memorial hall but he would also present Distinguished Service Orders of the British Empire to several people including K.G. Surbeck and Capt. Dennis Healy. Sgt. Eugene Sodeman and A.A. Lawrence would receive Military Medals from the Governor General, while Sgt. Leonard Williams would receive the British Empire Medal. Other dignitaries who would visit with the Governor General included Sir Richard Howard Vyse, the deputy chair of the British Legion, Major General C.B. Price, the Dominion President of the Canadian Legion and Ernest Manning, the premier of Alberta at the time. School divisions would close schools early so that children could get out to see the Governor General and visit the air show as well. The assembly of Boy

Scouts, Girl Guides, Air, Sea and Army Cadets was also the largest gathering of people ever in the community to that point. In fact, the population of the community doubled for the day. Throughout the community, buildings and streets were decorated for the visit as well. Sadly, the day would be marred when one of the air craft, carrying a pilot and two youths, crashed in a field near Vermilion just prior to the air show. With the Gover-

In the 60s, during that tumultuous era of flower power and self-expression, bell-bottom jeans were all the rage. ratty they become, the more popular and expensive they are. Sometimes there are more holes than material. Naturally, there are plenty of styles without tears; this just happens to be a pet peeve. I’m personally fond of denims made of stretchy fabrics and snazzy colors, without being slashed to bits. When I was a teenager, around the time of the first printing press (not really, but it sounds impressive), pants didn’t have stretch. They were worn tight, sort of like a second skin. Before going out for the evening, I’d often lie on the living room floor, hold my breath, and get my brother to zip me up using a pair of plyers. He also had to help me stand. Now that’s tight! Sometimes, Dad would shake his head and remark that it’d be a wonder if my internal organs withstood the strain. Other times, he’d loudly cast doubts on my future ability to bear children. Yet, with a giggle

and a wave, I’d flit away to visit with friends. Actually, it wasn’t so much of a flit as it was a stiff-legged hop, but I left nonetheless. One of the main differences the members learnt that was different than the skills they learned for their steer animals was how to choose a female that would offer them longevity in their herd pertaining to their feet, udders, production and body form. “The 4-H members are excited to be able to show their animals which they have been working so diligently on over the past seven months,” stated Heather Oddan, general leader. The show will start at 1 p.m. but the members will be onsite earlier so they can prepare their animal for showing. The 4-H members will be broken down into junior, intermediate and senior classes with the winner of each class moving on to the overall champion. The show is open to the general public and a beef on the bun will be provided after the show. On May 29, the Vermilion/Clandonald 4-H Interclub will be holding their female show at the Vermilion Fair Grounds at 5 p.m. and their steer show will be May 30 at the same location starting at 9:30 a.m. with the sale to follow at 2:30 p.m. The Club would like to express its deepest gratitude towards their sponsors, families and supports as the events could not go on without them.

VERMILION TRANSFER STATION UPDATE With the pandemic restrictions lifting, it is a good time to review the list of acceptable waste materials at the Vermilion transfer site. Opening hours remain the same from 9:00 A.M. to 4:45 PM, Monday to Saturday. The transfer site is closed on all Statutory holidays. YARD WASTE - leaves and grass must be taken out of the bags before being placed in the burn pit. Bags can be disposed of in regular household waste. RECYCLING - We accept clean corrugated cardboard that must be flattened before being placed in the bin. We accept clean boxboard, tin cans, plastics labelled as #1, #2. #4, and #5, as well as newspapers, magazines, books and paper. Plastics labelled #3, #6, and #7 are not accepted. LARGE ITEMS - Large items such as fiberglass tubs, showers, hot tubs and such must be cut in pieces no larger than 2 feet X 4 feet. As well vinyl siding, plastic pipe and hoses must be cut in 4-foot lengths. ELECTRONIC RECYCLING - Electronic recycling includes televisions and computers, as well as computer components (monitors, printers, scanners). The Pilot Program for electrical and battery-operated small appliances and electronics is continuing. Please ask at the scale where to place these items. There is literature available at the scale house which lists all the acceptable materials for this program. USED PAINT - includes paint, varnish, stain, paint thinner and stripper, as well as aerosol paint cans. HAZARDOUS WASTE - Small household-sized containers such as glue, cleaners, insecticides, etc., are considered hazardous waste. Common household cleaners such as oven cleaner, bleach and soaps are not considered hazardous waste and can be put in regular household waste. If the words “contains no PCB," appear on an item, such as fluorescent ballasts, it can be put in household waste. Fluorescent tubes, halogen lights or curly bulb lights are to be put in household waste. USED OIL - We have a location on site for recycling used motor oil, filters, jugs and pails as well as automotive batteries. MIXED WASTE - In the event that you have metal or wood frame chairs with cushions, the cushions need to be removed when possible. This applies to anything that can be taken apart to separate into different categories. TIRE RECYCLING - We take all types of tires but the rims have to be removed. CONCRETE AND SOD - the transfer site does not accept concrete and sod at the transfer site. The Town of Vermilion has a program for concrete. One-hundred percent of the funds raised go towards the training and placement of Dog Guides, and since 1985 they have raised more than $15 million. Ac c ording to Lions Found ation of Canada Dog Guides, the event has been carried out for more than 32 years, and the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides has been a vital national

fundraiser in support of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. The national events take place in approxi m ate l y 3 0 0 c o m m u n i t i e s ac r o s s Canada. Providing specially trained Dog Guides increase the independence, mobility, and safety of their handlers. The Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides rely on the generous suppor t of volunteers, donors, and partners to meet its goal of giving Canadians a new ‘leash on life’. Regardless of the approximate $25,000 expense, it takes to raise, train, and place each dog; each eligible Canadian receives a dog guide at no cost to them. “We have been doing the walk here in Vermilion for the past 11 years and have raised a substantial amount of money for the cause. Cadets Participate In Range Visitor Information Center Open For Season Training And Knot Review

In their first activity together since the onset of the pandemic, the Vermilion Cadet Corp were joined by the St. Paul Cadet Corp on April 30 for a day of range training and knots review at the Lt. Col. Craig Armories. Fifteen

cadets along with their Commanding Officers and Civilian Instructors spent time learning the safe handling of air rifles, enhancing their marksmanship training and practicing firing the rifles. The cadets also spent part of the day reviewing knot tying and correct lashing techniques.

The Visitor Information Center (VIC) on the southeast corner of the Highway 41 and College Drive intersection, opened on May second for the summer season. Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week until the beginning of September, the VIC provides a wealth of information about Vermilion and the surround-

ing area to tourists and local community members. People are invited to stop in and see employees Rachel or Kamryn for more information on what’s going on in the area. Maps for the town’s Historic Walking Tour are also available. The VIC is the intown game stop for the Go East Road Trip Adventure, and has tourist information for many of the highlights that Alberta has to offer.

If your goal is to get your kids interested in gardening there are lots of tips out there to help encourage their participation. The Eartheasy website has provided some helpful ways to draw the kids in. First, plant vegetables that they will eat and that are fairly hardy and easy to grow. Ten popular crops suitable for new and younger gardeners are sunflowers, lettuce, radishes, snow peas, cherry tomatoes, nasturtiums, bush beans,

carrots, potatoes, and pumpkins. Since pumpkins and tomatoes do take a little longer to mature and are a little finicky, buying seedlings is probably the best way to go. Here are a few other tips to keep them engaged once the season starts. Let them have their own garden space if you can, in the best soil and sun spot, so they are set to succeed. Do not buy them cheap plastic tools to use, make the investment into real garden tools their size, or modify tools to fit their little hands. Don’t forget the work gloves in

their size. Keep them engaged throughout the season, let them harvest the vegetable, and proudly serve it at lunch or supper. If you need to cheat a little, there are a few gardening chores that are no fun for anyone likes bug removal or weeding. Help out if you need to, but offer it as assistance, don’t boss your children into it.

Finally, show off their plot, or encourage them to brag about it. Take some pictures, have them give guests a tour of their garden and their plans for the produce.

Dust Suppression Program: There has been recent changes to the Dust Suppression Program. In an effort to provide reduced amount of dust on gravel roads, the County will provide an option to apply Dust Suppression materials to roads utilized by residents and industry at a cost that will be set annually. Richardson Ground Squirrel Control: Health Canada has cancelled the registration of 2% liquid strychnine used to control Richardson’s Ground Squirrels, with final production ending on March 4, 2021, sales ending March 4, 2022, and the product fully banned from use on March 4, 2023. The County is sold out of strychnine and will not be receiving any more. No Spray Agreements are available to those ratepayers who don’t want herbicides applied to the municipal road right of ways adjacent to their property and agree to themselves control weeds and vegetation within the County ROW. Complete the No Spray Agreement before May 31 annually by filling out the form on the County website.
