Over 200 people joined the Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association at their Spring Zabava on April 30. Not only were people treated to a freshly prepared Ukrainian meal, they were also entertained by the Association’s Ukrainian dancers in their final performance of the year. Prepared entirely by volunteers, a dinner of perogies, ham, meatballs,

perishke, assorted salads and desserts was served, followed by a night of dancing with a DJ. Association President Aaron Wynnyk is grateful to the hard wor k ing group of volunteers who made the night an enjoyable experience of “good fo o d, g o o d fr iend s and good fun”.

When we are prepared individually, communities are stronger and more resilient. This results in the emergency resources to be better used for the actual event and to assist the most vulnerable populations. According to the Emergency Preparedness Week toolkit prepared by the Government of Alber ta; Be Prepared website, there are seven behaviours that assist our preparedness: 1) Know the risks in the community (eg. wildfires, floods, power/water outages). 2) S t a r t a c o n ve r s a t i o n a b o u t preparedness. 3) Stay informed on public alerts

and emergency messaging. 4) Make an emergency plan for your household. 5) Have financial resilience, have proper insurance and an emergency fund. 6) Make community connections, a neighbourhood contact list (Who is my Neighbour postcards are availa b l e a t t h e Ve r m i l i o n To w n H a l l (office) for sharing contact information with your neighbours.) 7) Gather supplies for your emergency kit to leave quickly or to shelter in place. Help yourself and your c o mmunit y by st ar t ing with even just one of the above preparedness behaviours listed and gradually you and our community will move towards greater resilience to emergencies.

Bring your extra seeds, seedlings, bulbs and cuttings to the Community Seed Swap on May 14 at 1 p.m., Vermilion Library. Don’t have anything to swap? No problem! Listen to expert Ash Morrow chat about seed saving, get some hands-on practice planting a seed tray, and any extra seeds/seedlings will be available to anyone after the swap. There’s also going to be some great door prizes! H ow d o e s t h e swa p wo r k ? Yo u will receive tokens for the number of items you bring (up to 10 tokens/

person). All items are added to tables hosted by volunteers. “Swappers” are welcome to trade tokens for items they would like to try. Any leftover items will be available at the end of the swap for anyone, including new gardeners who have nothing to trade but who would like to start connecting with the local gardening community. So, bring some extra items to the swap! The librar y will have paper envelopes available for seeds, but you are welcome to use your own packaging. Please label everything you bring with you, the variety, basic growing information and if possible, bring in the original packaging or a picture. Rotary Garage Sale Back

The Vermilion Curling Rink was once again home for the Rotary Community Garage Sale this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Items in the garage sale, generously donated by the community were so plentiful this year that a second venue was employed. Sporting goods, outdoor items, gardening, tools and appliances were on sale in the Butler Building across from the Vermilion Agricultural Society Offices. Finally able to hold the traditional sale after being canceled for two years due to the pandemic, the Rotary Club will be donating the first $5,000 from the sale to the Vermilion Fire Department for the purchase of a drone. The rest of the funds

will be used to support local groups and ongoing activities within the community. The club partners with several organizations for the dispersion of the items left over, including the Islay Care Center, The Interval Store, St. Jerome’s School, the Olive Tree, Lloydminster SPCA, and the Canadian Diabetes Association. This sale would not be possible without the support of several dozen Friends of Rotary volunteers that support the Rotar y Club by offering their time, muscles, knowledge and organizing skills to help pick up, deliver, set up, sell, and clean up. The club would like to thank all the volunteers this year for coming out and would also like to thank the community for all the amazing donations.

Tenwell Update Presented To Council

At the Town Council Meeting on April 19, the Orphan Well Association (OWA) presented an update on the Tenwell #1 abandoned well located in the Brennan neighborhood. Work to contain the methane leaking from the well began in 2014, and while the first attempt to contain the gas was unsuccessful, the second attempt in 2020 was. The Tenwell Oversight Team (TOT) a joint venture between the Orphan Well Association, the Town of Vermilion, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), and Alberta Health Services (AHS) communicate regularly to monitor the gas capture and provide recommendations for well management. This spring, the OWA will be installing a long term Active Methane Management System (AMMS) to capture the methane gas. The new system will have the capability to convert the gas capture to energy, so the OWA has applied to the Alberta Utilities Commission for micro-generator status which would allow the energy created to be applied to the power grid. The construction of the new system, slated for May and June of this year will see most of the piping moved underground, and should not have any impact on the nearby playground. A security fence will be utilized, and the concrete building will be erected, containing the vacuum system, vent stacks and controls. A vinyl fence will be installed, and some beautification maintenance will be done to finish things off. The long term gas migration mitigation plan includes the enhanced subsurface capture system going in this spring,

and the OWA operating it for the long term. It is possible in the future that operational duties of the system could become part of the Town’s contribution to the plan. The plan will be outlined to Brennan residents this spring, with the installation of the long-term system in May and June, the generator installed in the summer, and ongoing semi-monthly monitoring of the network as well as weekly operator visits. Dave Marks, Manager Land, Stakeholder Relations, Support Services at OWA, is pleased with the work accomplishe d so far, and st ates that all members of the Oversight Team have been very good to work with.

Strikers Soccer Season Underway

With spring comes outdoor soccer, and after two long years, the Vermilion Strikers get to visit the pitch for what is shaping up to be an exciting season. This year, the Vermilion Soccer Association has a new President, Gordon Barrett who is ready to do the work with the Executive to continue sharing the soccer experience in the community. “Soccer in Canada is experiencing a golden generation,” states Barrett, “lifting the sport to new heights at the professional level. The women’s national team (WNT) won Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020. The men’s national team (MNT) beat the likes of Mexico and USA to win their qualifying group and will play at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this November”. At grassroots level, soccer returned to Vermilion in April for the 2022 season after the COVID-19 outbreak canceled the previous two seasons. The Vermilion Soccer Association (VSA) has 220+ kids registered this year across U5, Mini and Youth teams. Monday April 25 was the first return to Vermilion Provincial Park soccer fields since summer of 2019. VSA plays at the Tier 4 level in the Lakeland District under the Alberta Soccer Association. Barrett highlights that, “Our emphasis is inclusivity with Tier 4. No one gets left out. The sport of soccer provides critical benefits for children’s physical and mental health. It brings them outdoors, with activities that develop cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems.” The mental well-being benefits is an aspect that was given even more emphasis, especially in the wake of the COVID19 pandemic. “The VSA has a culture top down and practiced throughout our coaching roster. Our primary objectives are to build children’s self esteem, resilience to chal-

lenges, ability to cope with failure, learn from it, and support each other.” explains Barrett, “These are our goals, winning is a lesser priority, that’s a by-product as it happens, from our primary objectives.” One of the traits of soccer is its diversity. It’s truly a global sport and that also reflects in the VSA player and coaching ranks with French, Brazilian, Egyptian, German, Filipino, English etc. “I can personally identify with this,” states Barrett, “Canada has an outstanding community volunteer culture. Soccer presents an obvious opportunity for new immigrants. It is something they recognise that they can contribute and it provides a means to engage with the Canadian community”. One example of this is the U17/19M coach Michael Niesen. Niesen grew up in Europe playing through the academy system and was offered a professional contract with a top tier French football club before undertaking his military and law enforcement career. Michael is being assisted by firefighter students from Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre. After 3 years of COVID-19 interruption, the Vermilion Soccer Association has resumed its operations with a combination of long term volunteers and many new members to the Vermilion community. “This year poses interesting challenges as we transition out of COVID19 lockdown protocols. We rely very heavily on a small group of unsung heroes and this year has definitely prioritized building our ranks from within and expanding the supporting cast. We have already seen a dramatic response with new members stepping into executive, board and coaching roles, taking ownership and making an immediate impact. It really bodes well for the future of the VSA and its service to children and the community.” says Barrett.

One of the issues that the VSA is struggling with is community response to its referees. “We value our referees above all. I’m always so impressed with the children, the referee and the parents that prompt it. It nurtures leadership more than any other activity. As a coach I always ensure they know they have my backing regard-

less of the outcome to my team. That’s something we already preach ver y vocally within VSA to all our ranks”. For various reasons processed carbs, such as flour, junk fats and white sugar are culprits in derailing health. Berries are known to be lower on the glycemic index, thus less likely to cause a rapid rise and fall in insulin, the fat storing hormone. Here is a dessert that reduces insulin swings. It is a naturally sweet gourd that contains mogrosides that are sweet. This sugar is beneficial for those suffering with diabetes, as it does not cause the highs and lows in blood sugar, as other sugars do, and it helps improve insulin secretion. Mogrosides are antioxidants that help lower inflammation in the body, thereby reducing cancer risk. The sugar in Monk Fruit feeds healthy gut bacteria, fights unhealthy micro-organisms in the gut and reduce the severity of seasonal allergies. Coconut helps to lower blood sugar, which may be beneficial for people with diabetes, hypothyroidism, insulin resistant metabolic syndrome and obesity. The list of benefits of coconut and coconut oil are extensive, and even though coconut fat is a saturated fat, it is a healthful medium chain fatty acid, that is known

Cream also contains vitamin A for eye health and other fat-soluble vitamins such as D, E and K which need fat to be properly absorbed. Who knew eating dessert could be healthy and low carb? Keto Chocolate Cream Pie Crust 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut 1/2 cup crushed pecans 2 tablespoons butter or coconut oil (melted) 1 teaspoon monk fruit sweetener Filling and topping

2 cups whipping cream 4 ounces cream cheese (warm and softened) 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil 2 tablespoons cocoa powder 5 tablespoons monk fruit sweetener (divided) 1 teaspoon vanilla In a small bowl combine all the ingredients for the crust, and press into the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate and 1/2 inch up the side. In a large bowl beat the whipping cream and 2 tablespoons of the monk fruit sweetener to soft peaks. In a separate bowl beat together the cream cheese, cocoa, 3 tablespoons of the monk fruit sweetener and the coconut oil. Take half of the whipped cream, about 2 cups, and whip it into the chocolate mixture. Pour this into the pie crust. Add the vanilla to the remaining whipped cream, and top the pie with it. You can garnish with optional shaved or grated dark chocolate. Chill well or freeze for 30 minutes before serving.

Currently it is unclear if Musk plans to have any moderation at all on his new Twitter, or if his platform will be a complete wild west of free speech absolutism. Clearly attempting a platform with this kind of disregard for any censorship will come with its own issues. If Twitter’s new guidelines no longer routinely remove content that violates its current standards, includi n g s ex u a l ex p r e s s i o n , c o u n t e rspeech, and certain political speech, m a ny a d ve r t i s e r s w i l l n o l o n g e r advertise on the platform. Spring in your step? With April comes my b ir t h d ay, an d since the age of six, my family and I have gathered for a spring walk to commemorate it. Frankly, I could just as well forget about turning a stupid year older, but this outing is precious to me, and I plan to enjoy it. At the beginning of March, my cousin in England told me how snowdrops were carpeting the hollows, and wild yellow daffodils added a splash of color to the fells (hills). She lives in the Lake District,

in November 1928, she saved seven other children when fire swept through the farm home of Alexander Rennie. She and the children were alone in the house and she made trip after trip to go in and rescue the children and get them out. Then, one of the children ran back into the building and Rosetta ran back in to rescue her but the flames were too much and the child died in the house. She was the only one to lose her life. Her bravery earned her the Royal Human Societ y’s bronze medal as well as other rewards. She was also

awarded $100 in cash, which would be about $1,618 today. She had received her medal only a few weeks before the family was deported. The decision came about to deport the family because the father of the family was said to have been a failure at his farm, located about 20 kilometres south of Vermilion. Cattle and machinery that had been advanced to him disappeared and in March 1929, he was sentenced to the Fort Saskatchewan jail on the charge of stealing grain. The family was then supported by the

I can relate to that. I often wander the countryside near my home, “lonely as a cloud”, but I love every minute of it. Sometimes our walk involves ski pants and mittens, and other times rubber boots are required to navigate the rushing water s of a creek that winds its way through our pastures to meet up with Big Gully. Once, I fell into that muddy stream, much to my sons’ delight, who rolled on the opposite bank laughing, but this year things are pretty dry. Marshall School, where I work, was a muddy hive of activity when all the snowdrifts melted. Kids are drawn to puddles like bees to flowers. They zone in on pools of stagnant water, and nothing will do but that they jump into the very center. I see it everywhere,

sometimes with disastrous results from the viewpoint of an adult or perfectly wonderful results from the perspective of a child. Take note of a re c ent exc hang e between myself and a young boy who, with single-minded purpose, waded into a pool that threatened to breach the top of his rubbers and fill his little boots with an icy gush of murky slop. “James, please come out of there,” said I, concern winkling my aging brow. “Aren’t you afraid of filling your boots?” I stood on the sidewalk, observing his progress through the deepest part. “Nope,” he answered brightly. “There are only three things I’m afraid of. Mice, spiders, and…” James paused for dramatic effect. He peered at me with a grin and sloshed further into the swill. “And,” he repeated slowly, “… Teletubbies! As far as other spring activities, my friend Gwen recently announced she was going to “tap a maple”. While I know what she meant, the quirk y side of me plans to poke a poplar and whack a willow on our spring walk, just to see what happens. Today’s hike will be great. May is the month we recognize mothers. What are all the emotions and memories the word Mother evokes? Are all thoughts of Mother positive? If one should say NO does that cause feelings of guilt, when we think of how we should feel. Do we stuff feelings or hide real emotions? There will be memories to share but there will be pain to be felt upon thinking of Mother and Mother’s Day. For the Mother who has experienced the death of a child, whether prior to birth or in their senior years the pain or loss remains and both are often overlooked in their loss and painful memory journey. For the mother who experiences the “death of a dream” of being a parent and

are often overlooked, as well, and they are expected to carry on with no sense of sadness and anger at their loss. For the child who has experienced the death of a mother when they are very young to the adult child who feels very much like the small child, abandoned and needing that nurturing person in their lives. For the child or adult child who has experienced the death of a Grandma, who was filling the role of mother and grandmother, that child experiences a double 3” wide version loss, of both Grandparent and Mother. The Vermilion Heritage Museum will be opening after 2 years of being closed due to COVID. The Museum is an important part of Vermilion’s History. Located in the old Vermilion High School then renamed the S.R.P. Cooper School. It showcases many of the items donated by the people of Vermilion and tells a story of how Vermilion came to be. Vermilion is named after the colour of clay found by the river which started a brick factory that produced a lot of the bricks you see on some of the older buildings. Craig’s and Imperial Block

Vermilion Heritage Museum Opens After Two Years

The Museum has par tnered with organizations such as Summer Fun, the County of Vermilion River Watershed Project, the Provincial Park, and Lakeland College Environmental Sciences course to offer learning opportunities.

The Museum is in need of volunteers and we will be hosting a come and go coffee and volunteer information session on Saturday, May 7, 2022, from 1 – 4 p.m. Come for a tour and learn more about volunteer opportunities. Families might be interested in volunteering too. The Museum is a great place for families to hang out and learn about history all while volunteering. There is even a playground close by. Bears have a curious, investigative nature, an important trait that helps them find new food sources. This also means that bears can easily become used to human camps, garbage dumps, residential areas, ranches and farms when they learn these locations can provide easy meals. Once a bear gets used to an area that is also frequented by people, the chances of a bear-human encounter increase. During the spring and fall, bears are more susceptible to taking advantage of unnatural food sources, such as garbage. They are either just exiting hibernation, or about to enter it, and the availability of natural food sources are limited.

It is critical that individuals living within close proximity to forested areas and lakes be diligent in ensuring attractants are reduced or eliminated during these times. Bears coming into residential areas to feed on unnatural food sources is a public safety risk because they are easily habituated and may defend the food source. There are steps you can take to help keep bears out of your backyards: 1) Any possible attractants should be cleaned up and removed as soon as possible, if not immediately, to avoid habituation of bears and other wildlife. 2)Keep your garbage and recyclable bottles and cans in bear-resistant, airtight containers. 3) Keep your compost indoors. Outdoor compost attracts bears. Look into using an

indoor composter. 4) Consider installing electric fences to help protect livestock such as chickens, swine and those confined to smaller easy access pens. 5) Remove bird feeders from your yard in the months when bears are active – usually from the beginning of April until the end of November. Be sure to clean up any spilled bird seed from the ground. 6) Clean your barbecues. Scrub your barbecue clean after each use and store it in a bear-resistant building, such as the garage or shed. 7) Consider removing fruit trees and berryproducing bushes from your property. Bears are attracted to the fruit and berries. If you must keep the trees, pick the ripening fruit as early as possible and store them in secure,

airtight containers. 8) Never leave food out for wildlife. 9) Pet food should never be left outside or stored in areas accessible to bears. 10) Talk to your neighbours. Let your neighbours know if you’ve seen a bear in the community, and talk to them about being BearSmart at home. Gamers’ Club, led by Mr. Harvey, has come to the end of their quest. Near the end, they discovered a mysterious tower deep in the woods. Unfortunately, they disturbed the ancient spirits of the tower’s former guards. Having discovered a massive nest and treasure at the top of the tower, the greedy heroes were oblivious to the danger swooping in behind them. May 2 is Bus Driver Appreciation Day. We would like to thank all the hardworking bus drivers at VES who transport students to and from school every day. We appreciate all that you do. You make a difference. Thank you bus drivers. NOTICE OF ROADSIDE SPRAYING AND NO SPRAY ZONES The County of Vermilion River will be spraying weeds and brush along road allowances in Spray Area 1. Roadside spraying will focus in Spray Area 1, but we will be selectively spraying noxious weeds and brush throughout the County. If you want to control weeds and brush in front of your property rather than have the County spray, complete the annual No-Spray Agreement by May 31, 2022. Agreements are available at online or by phoning the County Office. Please note that CVR will not spray adjacent to maintained yard sites and maintained tame shelterbelts.

The Annual Trail Ride Is Back!

Submitted Riders Gather on the Iron Horse Trail May 14. After two years of event restrictions, the 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society is back to hosting their in-person Annual Trail Ride fundraiser on Saturday, May 14, 2022. The Trail Ride is hosted on the second Saturday in May and has been attended by nearly 500 people every year until the on-set of event restrictions in 2020. “We are thrilled to get on the trail again with all of our friends and supporters, this is what we do and how we raise funds to support transplant patients g oing throug h their jour ney.” said Founder, Moe Irvine. The ride begins at 11 a.m. in Lindbergh; participants will enjoy lunch on

the trail followed by dinner and live auction at Allied Ar ts Center in Elk Point. Canadian Country Recording Artist & Entertainer, Tiffany Dowhan will perform at the dinner where guests can bid on live auction items including a Fly-in Fishing trip to Hern Lake Lodge. The 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society is committed to increasing awareness about organ and tissue donation as well as build a strong community to support transplant recipients and their families who are going through their journey. BULL BREEDERS Starting A New Garden Plot

Thinking of star ting a new garden plot this year? There are a few things that need to be considered when starting a new garden. The first point to consider is your site selection, where in your yard is suitable for a garden? It may not always be the back yard, an area where the ground is loose, level and well drained is important. Well drained is particularly important as vegetables will not grow in areas that do not drain. Believe it or not, you want to plant where weeds grow, if weeds don’t grow, neither will vegetables. Look for a sunny location, most vegetables need at least 6 hours of daily sun exposure. Avoid being near large trees and bushes, their roots will absorb the water and nutrients in the soil before your vegetables can get them. Don’t panic if you can’t find a “perfect” spot, choose the best spot possible, gardening methods can be adjusted to suit the area. Be mindful of how big you would like your garden. Many first time g ar d e n er s m ake t h e m i st ake of c r e at i n g a g ar d e n to o l ar g e fo r u p ke e p. C o n s i d er t h e fo ll ow i n g points: how much room do you have that will allow you to use the rest of your yard the way you want to? How much time do you have to devote to

gardening? Large gardens require daily care, smaller gardens or box gardens might be more suitable if time is scarce for gardening. Think of your family size and help for the care of it. Why do you want to garden? Are you planning on using it to supply your vegetables for the winter, or just when you can eat them fresh out of the ground? If produce i s wante d for year ro u n d consumption, then a bigger plot is needed. And lastly, think of the vegetables you plan on growing, most vegetables need three feet between rows, so ten rows of vegetables require a 30 foot garden width. What you would like to g r ow w i l l a l s o d eter m i n e the size you need and the best location in your yard. Pl a nt s t h at r e q u ir e m o r e ground space, like pump kins, squash, and cucumb e r s (u n l e s s y o u t r e l l i s them) spread out so take more than the allocated three feet. If you are looking to save money on vegetables consider growing things that are expensive to purchase in the grocery store. But, grow things you and your family will eat. Arrange your vegetables in a way that makes the most efficient use of space and light. Group tall vegetables together on the north side of the garden where they won’t shade shorter vegetables. Keep in mind the space plants need too.

Access For Inclusive Child Care For Children With Special Needs Made Easier

As part of Alberta’s approach to supporting inclusive child care, an additional $3.6 million in funding is being provided through a bilateral agreement with the federal government, bringing the investment to $7 million. Funding will go to five regional partner agencies across Alberta. These agencies will work with licensed child care operators so they can better support children with special needs. Continuing on the work they have done over the past few years, $2.7 million is also being invested into Getting Ready for Inclusion Today (GRIT) to continue training on their inclusive child care model across the province. The inclusive child care model will provide on-site training and supports for educators, which will increase the number of spaces and centres that can offer inclusive child care for children, whatever their needs may be. “This investment will ensure children across Alberta have consistent access to the supports they need in licensed child care by giving educators and operators the tools they need to support kids with special, diverse or unique needs,” stated Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Children’s Services. “We are building a Canada-wide system that ensures that all families have access to high-quality, affordable, flexible and inclusive early learning and child care. That includes supporting a system that is fully inclusive and meets the diverse needs of children across Canada. The investment announced today is an important step in supporting families in Alberta,” said Karina Gould, federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. “All children should feel welcomed and supported to meaningfully participate in

their child care program. This funding will greatly benefit families in our region and help us ensure young children have access to the quality early learning they deserve,” said Elsa Campos, executive manager, Community Services, Providence Child Development Society. “These supports will help ensure our team has the resources they need to enable young children with special needs to reach their full potential in an inclusive setting. It will also help ensure quality care is within reach for families across the province, allowing parents to get back to work while knowing their child is receiving the best care possible. It is important every little one, including those without special needs, has exposure to friends with special needs or various language barriers,” commented Jessica Molina, assistant supervisor, Little Worlds Learning Center. “GRIT Edmonton is about the tenacity of families raising children with disabilities and diverse needs. For the past 40 years, our programs have built on applying research and best practices to ensure each child’s participation in the everyday places where children play and learn. We are excited to contribute to a shift in how inclusive child care will be delivered to support the skills and knowledge of early childhood educators throughout Alberta,” commented Barb Reid, executive director, GRIT Edmonton. Prior to fully implementing the inclusive child care model, supports for programs caring for children with special needs were inconsistent across the province. In 2021, the new model was implemented through a pilot program, using funding from a bilateral agreement with the federal government. Following the successful pilot, this funding will expand the inclusive child care model provincewide to support more programs

each year. This will provide consistency and allow more centres across the province to support children with diverse needs. This is just one step Alberta’s government is taking to improve access to inclusive child care across the province. In 202223, $35.6 million is allocated to support children with special needs to participate in licensed child care programs, including continued expansion of the inclusive child care model. Of this funding, $21 million is from the Canada-Alberta Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement and $14.6 million is from the province. Further details on additional supports will be shared in the coming months. Quick facts The five external inclusive child care agencies that will administer the inclusive child care program are: - Stepping Stones Child Care Society Northwest region. -Providence Child Development Society

Northeast and Calgary regions. -Getting Ready for Inclusion Today (GRIT) - Edmonton region and west half of North Central region. -Midwest Family Connections - Central region and east half of North Central region. -Key Connections Consulting - South region. Funding is being provided through the 2021-22 to 2024-25 Canada-Alberta Early Learning and Child Care Agreement (signed in July 2021), which included $7 million to support inclusive child care through grants to these five agencies. Approximately 270 programs are currently being served through these agencies. The Canada-Alberta Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement signed in November 2021 includes $202.6 million over five years to develop and fund childcare options to support vulnerable and diverse populations as well as children with extra support needs.
