It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

With Christmas just a few short days away, the town of Vermilion is beginning to look a lot like Christmas with all the festive lights and lawn displays throughout. As a child, one of the best parts of the Christmas season was when my parents bundled us up, stuck us in the car and off we went looking at all the beautifully decorated houses for the season. I remember the awe and magic I felt as we passed by each house, and to this day it is still one of my most favourite things to do. It just seems to bring me this feeling of cheerfulness and I am happy I managed to keep this family tradition alive with my children,

until they reached their late teenage years when they just weren’t having it anymore, LOL. I do hope they will keep the tradition alive when they have children and they are old enough to enjoy it as much as I did as a child. If you haven’t had the opportunity yet to take a drive around our beautiful town I encourage you to do so; bundle up those kiddies, grab a hot chocolate, and spend some wonderful family time. Over the past few years, outside Christmas lights and decorations have come a long way and some of the displays have lights that dance in all kinds of movements and flashes, it really can be fun to see and it makes family memories that will last a lifeSanta and the bright lights makes this house very festive. time.

The 122ND Christmas Bird Count

Are you someone who enjoys watching and tracking birds in the area? If so, the Vermilion River Naturalist Society has just an event for you. Each year Birds Canada and the National Audubon Society help coordinate and support the efforts of more than 2500 counts throughout the Western Hemisphere. The Audubon Christmas Bird Count utilizes the power of volunteers to track the health of bird populations at a scale that scientists could never accomplish alone. Data compiled in Vermilion and area will record every individual bird and bird species seen in a specified area, contributing to a vast community science network that continues a tradition stretching back 121 years. Vermilion River Naturalist Society

(VRNS) will be holding their annual Christmas Bird Count on December 18 and invites all birdwatchers, regardless of skill level, to participate in the longestrunning community science survey. “We realize that many people are looking for new challenges and opportunities this year. Being part of a major citizen science initiative can be a very rewarding experience. Whether you are able to go hiking or driving around your rural area for several hours or have a bird feeder set up near a window and can spend an hour with your coffee or tea counting the birds at your feeder, you are collecting invaluable data for bird population research,” commented Vermilion River Naturalist Society, Iris Davies. Each individual count is performed in a count circle with a diameter of 24 kilometers. At least ten volunteers, including a compiler to coordinate the process,

count in each circle. The volunteers break up into small parties and follow assigned routes, which change little from year to year, counting every bird they see. In most count circles, some people also watch feeders instead of following routes. Last year the volunteers recorded 1,289 individual birds and 25 species with 13 field observers and 11 feeder watchers. The group’s best year so far was in 2015 where they recorded 4,348 individual birds and 41 species with 29 field observers and 11 feeder watchers. Vermilion Curling Club Is Back In Action

The Vermilion Curling Club began their season at the beginning of November and everyone is enjoying being back on the ice. A full season is planned this year, with all five leagues back in action. Tuesdays once again host both the Youth and Ladies League and the Men are on the ice Wednesday evenings. The Senior League plays on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Super League owns the rink on Thursday nights. Three bonspiels are planned for the season, the Jim Smith Memorial for Youth will be held February 3 and 4. The Club is hosting an Open Bonspiel Family Day Weekend and invites families to sign up. The season will wrap up March 23-27 with the annual Mixed Bonspiel. Ladies League Coordinator Danielle Eriksen is ecstatic to be back at the rink, “It A close call on the last end.

Town Council Update

Council meeting is December 21, at 7 p.m. Councillor Snow moved, “That Council for the Town of Vermilion approve the hiring of part-time vaccine checkers for the Town of Vermilion for the duration of the Restriction Exemption Program (REP).” Council approved this motion, and will be looking to acquire staff to fulfill this role. It is the time of year again when an external audit of the Town’s finances

needs to be done, and Councillor Kevin Martin made the motion that Donald L. Isaman Professional Corporation performs the external financial audit for the 2021 fiscal year. Council approved the motion. The first reading of the 2022 - 2024 Operating Budget with revenues and expenses detailed in an attached appendix was moved by Councillor Martin and approved by council.

Council also approved the first reading of the 2022-2026 Capital Budget and Forecast with expenditures and funding details, which includes an increase in property tax revenue of 2.2%, and an increase in Water and Solid Waste Utility rates. Council also approved retention of the current Sewer Consumption rate that is in place. Netting for the Outdoor Rink was also approved by council.

Expanded Financing Products To Unleash Young Farmers And Agribusiness Entrepreneurs

On December 6 Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable MarieClaude Bibeau announced that young farmers and young food business owners would have enhanced and expanded financing opportunities through Farm Credit Canada (FCC) in an effort to open up the ideas, passion and energy of Canadian youth in the world-leading agriculture and food industry. The FCC said, “the expansion of three FCC loans will help young farmers and those who are getting started or growing their business in the agriculture and food industry. FCC has increased the lifetime maximum amount it will approve for the Young Farmer and Young Entrepreneur loans from $1 million to $1.5 million. According to FCC the Young Farmer Loan program will provide qualified producers under the age of 40 with loans up to $1.5 million to purchase or improve farmland buildings, and that the loan will include features to support their long-term success, including lower lending rates. The Young Entrepreneur Loan will offer the same financing up to $1.5 million to qualified applicants under the age of 40 and it can be used to start or expand a business and to purchase shares in an agriculture-related business including those in the agri-food sector. “This access to capital will allow these businesses to take advantage of new opportunities, grow the economy and create more middle-class jobs. Features include no processing fees, preferential interest rates and up to 18 months to make a purchase,” stated the FCC report. Also, the eligibility and the lifetime maximum approval of the Starter Loan has been expanded and increased. A Starter Loan is designed to support new entrants into the industry, helping them build a solid credit rating and improve their financial literacy. The report also stated that, “the Government of Canada has made it a priority to support the entrance and inclusion of young Canadians into the agriculture and agri-food sector and that the enhanced

loan products build upon other Government of Canada programs such as the Youth Employment and Skills Program, which has helped fund about 2,000 jobs for youth in the agriculture sector in 2021.” Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Marie-Claude Bibeau says that one of the biggest challenges young farmers and entrepreneurs tell her they face is access to capital. “These specialized loans mean the next generation will be better able to become established and contribute to Canada achieving its full potential as a leading food supplier worldwide and help maintain Canada’s position as a world leader in sustainable agriculture,” commented Bibeau. She also went on to say that, “we have a strong and diverse industry and getting a good start will allow more bright and ambitious people to pursue their dreams.” Since April 2019, FCC says it has approved over 6,700 loans specifically tailored to young producers and entrepreneurs worth almost $2.1 billion “By expanding and enhancing the

On Oct. 9, 1946, it was a big day for the area when Vermilion had a new connection to the outside world thanks to what was called the best rural airport in Alberta. After 15 years of work by the Vermilion Board of Trade, the town council and community residents, the new airport was opened in a grand ceremony. There were many dignitaries attending the ceremony including the Minister of Public Works and Mayor J.W.G. Morrison, who severed ribbons to open the

field as the Edmonton Fliers Breakfast Club flew in even though the weather wasn’t the best. A Board of Trade luncheon was also held, with President E.M. Stewart serving as the master of ceremonies, with 70 people in attendance. Only two weeks previous, the town had obtained a licence for the field from the Dominion Board of Transport. The airport featured two runways that ran for 2,800 and 2,200 feet, along with a Dominion Government radio range station. Due to its many features, it was called the finest rural airport in Alberta by many of the dignitaries. The work to create this mo dern

airfield had begun in 1931 when the town realized that it was in a prime position along Canadian air routes and the town decided to set aside 175 acres of good land for the airfield. Work then began to clear the land and get it ready. Even before the air field was truly ready, it was used by the Royal Canadian Air Force as pilots in training would land to get a break from the ongoing training for war. Many of those pilots were on their way to Edmonton and looking for a break, even if it meant landing in little more than a cleared field. W.A. Fallow, the Minister of Public Wo r k s , w o u l d s t a t e t h a t t h e n e w airfield was a notable achievement. His

son, Maurice, would also speak and described Vermilion as an example of a municipality that led the way in establishing modern airfields. For the people of Vermilion, they would soon get used to seeing a lot more small planes landing in the area as the pilots looked for a break flying from Saskatchewan to Alberta, or vice versa. By following some of our cardinal rules we can all work to keep the grinches away: • If you won’t be ho-ho-home this holiday season to collect your parcels, arrange for mail to be delivered to an alternate pickup location, or ask a friend to grab it. • Consider installing video cameras to deter thieves from taking what doesn’t belong to them–they just might feel your “presents” watching their every move! • No one chooses to “string” thieves

The Internet; And How It Came To Be

F o r m a n y, t h e internet is not a luxury, it’s become an integral part of people’s lives. Nearly every aspect of the human experience has been modified to incorporate the internet, and today many people could not imagine living without it. Even though most people rely on the internet heavily, many don’t even know its history. In the late 1960s The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), an arm of the U.S. Defense Department, funded the development of ARPANET. They started this project in an effort to accelerate the rate at which information could be transported between institutions. The goal of this network was quite modest compared to the massive globally spanning network it would become. ARPANET had one purpose, to link computers at government research institutions. This network took on a tentacle-like structure,

with different computers each connecting to each other with no central authority. This meant that if any one of the computers went offline the overall network would still be operational. Though the overall network was still quite small, with only about 50 computers connected it was not impossible for outages to take place. At this time sending files was not as intuitive as it is today, in fact, users of this ARPANET were required to have a map of all connected computers beside them, and in order to send a file, they would be required to follow the map writing down the address of each computer along the way, and writing it on the file so it would end up at the right destination. This system was a massive headache to use, and an even bigger annoyance to maintain. Considering new computers were being added to the network every day, the maps would need to be updated in order to ensure files would reach their destination. Eventually, this system became convoluted as the tangled web of computers grew and grew. It was clear a new method was needed to deliver this information. It was around this time, in 1974 when

other networks began popping up around the country, however, this only added to an already confusing system. The solution was a set of programs called Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), Internet Protocol (IP) and Domain Name System (DNS). TCP was a standard format for sending file packets so everyone was speaking the same language when trying to address a file. Internet Protocol was a standard way of assigning addresses so there was no more confusion of where files should be going. DNS would store everyone’s domain address in a categorical manner rather than the old random method and different DNS servers would hold a list of everyone’s addresses and how to find them. This meant no more planning out the route your files would take to get to the recipient as this was now the DNS’s job. All the user had to do is know which DNS their recipient was using (such as .com, .ca, .edu). This new innovation made it possible to connect all these networks together as it was streamlined and simplified for use. So, now that the infrastructure was in place for what would eventually become the

However, this version of the internet was still primitive compared to what we have today, as there were no interactive web pages or apps. Instead, the websites of this era were more like singular articles with no way to jump easily between related content, this is known as web 1.0. Web 2.0 came only a few years after a major discovery from Tim Berners-Lee. He saw the possibility of using hyperlinks to link any information to any other information over the Internet. This meant that websites could now link to other pages on their site as well as other people’s websites. This new creation led to the innovation of the next 20 years as the internet grew from a simple place to share text-based information to a platform of ideas and content that everyone now enjoys today. But even with all these innovations, the internet is still far from reaching its final form. New technologies like cryptocurrencies usher in a new era of the internet. Santa Is Returning To Vermilion

Good ol’ St. Nick visited Vermilion back on November 25 during the Light Up parade, but the Vermilion Voice has received word from the jolly old elf that he will be returning one last time before the holidays to do a check for the naughty or nice and to have pictures taken with both young and old. Santa has informed the Voice that he will be making an appearance at

the Town Christmas tree in front of the Telus building on Dec 18 from 2-4 p.m. While visiting with Santa attendees will also be able to enjoy hot chocolate, homemade cookies, a propane fire, and holiday music. Santa said that he is ver y much looking forward to the extra visit and hopes that it will bring a lot of Christmas cheer to the residents of Vermilion. “It is always good to make one last surprise visit, as it helps me check my

list twice for the naughty and nice, and it also gives residents one last chance to have pictures of their children, pets, grandmas and grandpas, whoever taken before the big day,” commented Santa. He also noted that it can bring some extra cheer to the communit y, one thing he always looks forward to each year. Residents are reminded to bring their cameras so they can take their photos. Games are a great way to liven up a holiday celebration. However, it’s best to avoid any that require a long explanation or specific knowledge, as you might lose the interest of your guests. Party games — often quick, simple and hilarious — are your best bet. Here are a few options: • Perudo. In this bluffing game, each player rolls five dice but keeps the results hidden. Everyone must then make declarations about how many dice are showing a particular value. When someone calls a bluff, all the dice are revealed. • Stay Cool. All you have to do is answer as many questions as possible in two minutes. The catch? You have to answer two simultaneously — one out loud and the other spelled out using letter dice.

The report states that at least one employee was forced to take sick leave to get away from what they called a “miserable, unhealthy, toxic and just really unfortunate” workplace. There were also claims that Stubbs forced staff members to paint her house. After reaching out to MP Stubbs office in regards to the allegations her Executive Assistant, Tina Warawa replied stating that MP Stubbs response would be the same as in the interview with the Globe and Mail. “Ms. Stubbs denies the allegations of abusive behavior, saying she is a victim of retaliation for being one of the dissidents in the Conservative caucus calling for an early review of Mr. O’Toole’s leadership,” stated Warawa. I think most people on the flip side would not expect their boss would make work accommodations for them like she has for almost every staff member, know what their family is up to, ask about their kids, come to their homes, but Shannon does.” Warawa, who has been with MP Stubbs since after her 2015 election, making her the longest staff member for MP Stubbs noted that she has been in literally every situation with the MP from being in Ottawa, to working with her in the riding, to attending events. “I have worked for her now for over

half a decade and can tell you that these claims are the opposite of my experience. I have never been yelled at or any of the other false claims and also have not as an office manager had other staff members report it to me either,” stated Warawa. Warawa did mention that their jobs are certainly not within a set 9-5 hours due to the nature of the work and at times it can be intense which in not unique to her office. “It is the job and it has also been the most rewarding time of my life and the fact that I have been with her for almost six year s shoul d s peak vo lumes,” commented Warawa. Since the allegations came to light Jordan Paquet, a former policy adviser to Stubbs, said he was surprised by the allegations, adding his experience was of a positive work environment. “I was always treated with respect. Absolutely, it was a mutually respectful environment,” he said. “If I needed time off, I took time, she was always fine about that. She was always totally reasonable with expectation, with deadlines.” Current staff member, Gregory Loerts also came to Stubbs defence by tweeting on Monday that Stubbs is “wonderful to know personally, the work has been challenging, but extremely rewarding.

Westman Farms Holds 22nd Annual Bred Heifer Sale

Westman Farms held their annual Bred Heifer Sale on December 6 at the farm and considering the year the cattle industry has experienced they had a great sale. Now being operated by the 4th generation of the Westman family, Westman’s 22nd annual sale has grown with the changes in the industry, offering three different ways to purchase cattle; online, offsite, and in person. With over 500 head of cattle, potential buyers were able to view the variety of heifers available through videos online, providing plenty of time to choose their new editions to their herds. There were 490 heifers sold averaging $2850 a head. This year’s sale had buyers from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and for the first time, Quebec. Basketball is Back! The St. J Spar tans hosted their Senior Boys tournament on December 3rd & 4th. Our boys opened the tournament Friday with a loss to Holy Rosary JV from Lloydminster, but bounced back Saturday with a win over Thunderchild from Turtleford SK. In their third game they defeated Vegreville Comp to win the B-Side trophy. On the A-side, Lloyd Comp JV beat Holy Rosary in the final while Blessed Sacrament Wainwright upset Notre Dame from Bonnyville to capture third place. Every year ahead of Remembrance Day, students of all ages submit work honouring our soldiers and veterans to the Royal Canadian Legion Art Contest. Our school had two winners this year! They had a lot of fun building lobster traps and talking about daily life in Meteghan. Next, they venture off to Iqaluit to learn about life in the Far North of Canada. Not to be left out of the fun, our Foods Class students had a blast mixing, baking, and painting Christmas salt dough ornaments. Our grade 8 students enjoyed the Town’s skating facilities during their physical education classes. They really sharpened their skills! St. Jerome’s always stays committed to improving academics and promoting positive peer-led interactions between our diverse age range of students. Because of COVID safety, they have been pre-packaging meals so that the food stays hot while being delivered to c lassrooms. This has Bus Safety Winners - Sawyer, Ryan and Douglas. They are committed to providing affordable lunch options for families, so they have decided not to increase the cost of the meals. From now until January, they are offering Holiday Gift Certificates sponsoring a VES student’s hot lunch for $25 (five meals), $50 (eleven meals) or $100 (22 meals).
