Ecoplast Solutions, a start-up composite building company based in Lloydminster, is constructing its first home made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles. This energy-efficient, eco-friendly home is the first of its kind to be built in Western Canada. The house, located at Jackfish Lake, will began the manufacturing process on September 21, 2021, and is expected to be fully assembled by the 24th. Ecoplast will be using their unique

method of converting plastic bottles into strong PET foam plates. Their foam structures feature many advantages over traditional building materials. The PET foam will not corrode or rot over time, can be easily shaped to fit a variety of unique designs, and are made from 100 percentrecycled materials. “We design, engineer, and laminate the panels making them structurally superior and water-resistant,” explained Kelly Rogers, Managing Partner of Ecoplast Solutions. Each individual panel is shaped and

manually cut according to the home’s design. For this project they will be incorporating over 29 prefabricated PET wall panels. “A lot of planning and work has gone into this project, so we’re so excited to finally see this build come to life,” commented Rogers. The 1,537 square-foot, four-bedroom home located in Jackfish Lake repurposed more than 656,448 recycled plastic bottles. Ecoplasts sister company, JD Composites, flew in from Nova Scotia to help with the company’s first build.

“We’re grateful to our East Coast partners for the opportunity to work with such an innovative product. Their guidance through our first year has been critical to our success and we’re excited to see what the future has in store for Ecoplast Solutions and JD Composites,” stated Rogers. With innovation a way of the future, green building materials are making their impression. Town of Vermilion Council Updates

A Regular Town Council Meeting was held on September 21. Here are a few highlights: Council, in accordance with the 2021 Municipal Election and Senate/Referendum Vote, authorized the Institutional Vote for October 12, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

at Vermilion Valley Lodge. The council also authorized the Advance Vote to take place on October 12, 2021 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Vermilion Town Hall. At present the Ice Plant is running at onethird of its capacity. There is ice in place at the stadium, the first skate on the rink was on September 10. With the onset of the fall and winter

seasons, there will be changes to the Residential Organics Program. Effective October 12 pick-up will become bi-weekly. There was less organics tonnage reported due to the drier summer and less heavy organics coming off of community yards. The pickup schedule is available through the Town of Vermilion’s Community Calendar on the website and has been included in Septem-

I was born and raised in Clandonald and graduated from J.R. Robson High School in 1998. I married Leanne in 2009 and we have one son Aiden. I have lived and worked in this community and area my whole life. I currently work as a Sales Consultant for Webb's Machinery and am also a proud member of the Vermilion Fire Department which serves the Town of Vermilion as well as the County of Vermilion River. I am also currently serving as the Chair of the Town of Vermilion Parks, Recreation, and Culture Board as well as the Town of Vermilion Facility Enhancement Board. I believe we have a great community and we must plan for the future. We have many great businesses in our town and we must make sure that they continue to thrive, however we also need to continue attracting new businesses to the community. Steady population growth is also important to the success of our town. All of this is achievable by working together. I am always open to listening to ideas regarding change and growth.

Alberta’s Municipal Election Is October 18

In three weeks, Albertans will again have the vitally important opportunity to visit a polling station and cast their votes in the municipal general elections. Eligible residents in all of the municipalities, counties and M.D.’s in the province were able to put their name forward as a candidate January 1 of this year, and had until noon on Tuesday, September 21 to do so. Voting will take place on Monday October 18, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with advance voting also being offered. Advanced poll times and locations vary between municipalities, with most advance polls open for a day the week before the election. In Vermilion, voting will take place at the Vermilion Regional Centre, with advance voting available on October 12, at the Town Hall from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Several people have put their name forward for positions on Vermilion’s Town Council, with 13 people running for the six

council spots, and two people are vying for the position of Mayor this year. As well, a Buffalo Trail School Division (BTPS) Trustee for Ward 4: Electoral Subdivision #1 position is on the ballot. Running for Mayor this year are Caroline McAuley and Gregory Throndson. For Town Council the following people have put their names forward: Paul Conlon, Bradley Gallamore, Richard Lavoie, Kevin Martin, Robert Pulyk, Joshua Rayment, Amr Rezk, Robert Snow, Justin Thompson, Hayward Vaters, Erwin Warkentin, Kirby Whitlock and Richard Yaceyko. School trustee candidates are Nicole Hauk, Bruce Marriott, Marty Pawlak, and Darla Rae Yonkman. Also on the ballot this election Albertans are being asked to vote for a senate nominee, as well, there are two referendum questions to answer. Lloydminster RCMP Respond To Shooting At A Residence

Lloydminster, Sask.- On September 21, 2021 at approximately 9:40 p.m. Lloydminster RCMP responded to a report of a shooting at a residence near the 2600 block of 44th Avenue in Lloydminster. Preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle attended a residence in this area, and one of the occupants met with one of the residents of the house. During this meeting, another male approached the house and discharged a firearm several times. Police were able to intercept the suspect vehicle, but were not able to apprehend

the suspects due to the enhanced level of danger to the public that was created by the suspect’s driving pattern. Lloydminster RCMP believe this was a targeted incident, with no additional random threat to the public. Police continue to investigate this matter. Lloydminster RCMP are asking that anyone with information about this incident please contact the Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400. The County of Vermilion River has four council seats being pursued by more than one candidate, as well as three Buffalo Trail School Division Trustees spots for Ward 4 being elected. County Division 4 has Lonnie Wolgien, George Kuneff and Murray Brown running for the seat, Division 5 is seeing Jason Stelmaschuk and Jacob Mohrbutter vying for the position, and Division 7 has Leslie Cusack and Brent Farrell running against each other. BTPS Trustee spots are for Electoral Subdivision #2 (Rural Vermilion) and Jim King and Katherine Nelson are the candidates. Electoral Subdivision #3 (Kitscoty/PV and area) has Kayti Eldridge and Jessica Kaastrup in the running, and finally, David Bensmiller and Cameron Stevenson are running for the

seat representing Electoral Subdivision #4 (Dewberry/Marwayne and area). The county will have advance voting on two dates, Wednesday October 13 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday October 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both days voting will take place at Kitscoty Legion Hall. To be able to vote, eligible voters must provide proof of their name and home address. If someone’s identification shows a post office box number as the address instead of a residential or legal address, it can be accepted if it is in reasonable distance to the voting jurisdiction. Pumpkin spice ever y thing season is upon us. These pumpkin spice doughnuts are a real treat and they are so easy to make. Since these donuts are not fried, but baked, you will need a doughnut pan. Here are a few tips for successful baked donut making. Only fill the tin 2/3 full, because if you do more, the doughnut raises so much that you lose the hole in the center. The other tip to success is, the oven must be preheated, and then left for five minutes longer, to really get it hot, before you pop the doughnuts in. If you put the icing on when they are fresh out of the oven and still hot, it melts into the doughnut, and drip down the sides

and looks like the icing at a professional doughnut shop. I used a butter cream icing successfully. If you wait to ice the doughnuts until after they have cooled, the icing looks more like when you ice a cake. If you do this method you can add sprinkles right away, as the icing will set up in 2 – 5 minutes. It can be great fun to decorate the doughnuts. You can also shake the cooked doughnuts in a cinnamon and sugar mixture. To do this, brush the cooked doughnut with a light coat of melted butter and them shake them, one at a time in a plastic or paper bag of sugar and cinnamon. Another doughnut finish is to brush them with the melted butter and then shake in a plastic or paper bag of powdered icing sugar. I have also put some powdered icing sugar, regular sugar and cinnamon in a cereal bowl, and dip the doughnuts into it on both sides.

Beat together the butter and sugars, add the oil beat in the eggs. Add in the pumpkin, salt and spices. Add the baking powder and baking soda, and part of the flour and milk. Beat in alternating the milk and the flour. Spoon into a greased or oiled doughnut pan, only fill 2/3 full. Bake for 10 minutes. A key to success is having the oven really preheated and to use the convection feature if you have it.

I n 1915 , a t t h e height of the First World War, there was a plan laid out by the Dominion Government and the provincial government to provide meat for Britain and France through Canadian cattle. The plan was to take advantage of the Vermilion Valley, where it was stated there were millions of tons of the finest of grasses going to waste every year. Cattle would be brought in to fatten them for the British and continental trade as a result. The plan was supported by all levels of government and the wealthy stockmen of Ontario who took an immediate interest in it. The stockmen would set out from Ontario to visit Vermilion to inspect the

country to establish ranches where half a million of acres of land could be used for the purpose of fattening cattle. The plan was not to have large ranches, but many small ones that were stocked and maintained by experienced cattlemen. Among the cattlemen who came out to Vermilion were the mayors of Hamilton, Port Colborne and Bridgeport. Several government officials including the MPP of Hamilton was also coming out, as was Senator Talbot of Lacombe. Residents of the Vermilion Valley were actually heavily opposed to the project, stating that bringing in huge amounts of cattle and taking up land would push other ranchers out of the area, while also destroying a great deal of land that could be used for crops.

The proposal would continue to move forward, at a smaller rate, and $5 million in money would be put behind it in eastern capital. In all, 93,000 acres of land would be stocked and 20 carloads of cows and cattle would be shipped in by 2017 for the project. Fo r m o r e t h a n 16 years car manufac turer Mi c helin has been working towar d s c re at i n g an airless tire. They decided to ignore that classic saying of, “don’t waste time reinventing the wheel,” and tried to make something new. They had a vision for an airless tire, one that would be puncture proof. The idea was to make a tire that would never go flat, but would still have the same feel as a traditional tire. Of course, there are a couple of obstacles in the way of that dream. For example, how can you remove air from the equation while still providing the natural shock absorption of traditional

tires? Well, Michelin in par tnership with GM came up with a design that features large rubber spokes. These spokes work similar to how spokes on a bike would hold the tires’ into shape. However these rubber spokes vary in that they are not rigid like the hard metal spokes on bikes. Instead Michelins “Uptis” features spokes that are both rigid enough to hold shape, as well as flexible enough to absorb the impact from a bump in the road. This design allows the tires to be punctured without any degradation to the tires performance. In fact a nail can go completely through the tire without damaging the tire in a serious way. This means no more flat tires, no more worrying about under inflation, or over inflation, and no more being stranded on the highway. Because of this inability to

pop, Michelin’s Uptis tire could last up to three times as long as conventional tires. According to Michelin more than 200 million tires head to the scrapyard a year due to these issues. So, this new tire should be a much better choice for those who care about their impact on the environment. Although this all sounds great, it’s unclear how much Michelin will charge for this new tire. People are not likely to switch if the price is greater than what conventional tires are currently. Considering tires are already expensive enough, it’s unlikely anyone will want to pay a premium to test out a new type of tire (even if it does claim to last three times longer). If Michelin is to be successful with this new tire they are going to have to find a price that is competitive with

current options on the market. Michelin hopes to have this new tire on vehicles by 2024, working together with GM for design and production. Of course there are still questions on how the tire will perform when dirt and mud become stuck between the spokes making the wheel unbalanced. However the solution (if this proves to be a problem) will likely just be spraying the inside of the tires when getting the vehicle cleaned. Michelin has already allowed people to test out this new tire and are very pleased with the results. From their test drives people were unable to tell the difference between their special Uptis airless tire and a traditional tire. So, finally after 16 years of design Michelin is finally ready to release its reinvention of the wheel.

Where are the health leaders for the County of Vermilion River? The fourth wave of COVID is upon us and Vermilion and area lack information. Information is power! We learn and understand the seriousness of this pandemic. There is no testing or tracing here and real numerical statistics can be hard to find online. Why are outbreaks, c a s e n u m b e r, v a c c i n a t i o n r a t e s hidden? They should be reported on a regular basis! Educate the public. We have the 3rd lowest vaccination rate in the province. We are not consistent in wearing masks or in wearing them correctly. They are ineffective if worn under your nose! Where was AHS when vaccine clin-

ics were needed? Vermilion missed out on being a testing site for COVID positivity. Why aren’t vaccine clinics going out to the people in communities? Early on residents travelled miles for vaccination when it started up in January 2021. It is re c ognized that peo ple have the right to not be vaccinated. Know vaccination saves lives and by not getting it there must be consequences. Bring back testing, tracing and isolations! This province should be more forthcoming with information. Fall is here and it’s time to find some fun fall activities. Luckily a few local corn farmers have created corn mazes. These local made activities are great family fun and are a per fect way to spend some the weekend. Vegreville, Paradise Valley and Wainwright areas all have local corn mazes open to the public, though these mazes don’t stick around long so take advantage while they’re still running! Vegreville’s corn maze plans to offer different themes each weekend from art & music, to “spooky stalks”. They are open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and have an entry

fee of $5 a person (5 and under free). Vegreville has been running since september 11th and will wrap up on October 10th. Vegreville’s corn maze features an alternating petting zoo and pony ride each day. As well as themed decorations a tractor ride and some friendly mascots. Finally, Paradise Valleys corn maze is built around a scavenger hunt, grab a game sheet and find the hidden code words. Fastest times (with the most words) will be entered into a draw to win a Coleman 95L rolling cooler! Admission is completely free and as the owners say the only price is a “smile”. This maze is open from sun-up till 9 p.m., just remember that

it is on a working farm so there will be moving equipment. The Zajic corn maze in Wainwright just wrap ped up its last weekend. The requirement to participate was either a food bank donation or a small cash donation to the Handivan. They had BBQ, mini donuts and popcorn all weekend as well as face painting on Saturdays. Although this maze is already closed this year, keep it in mind for next season as this is a great maze worth checking out.

From September 20 to 22 the Vermilion Public Library held its annual book sale. It was a successful event and was even visited by a muskrat as they held the sale outside. “I think this one was low- key. It was the biggest book sale we’ve ever had but spread over three days. Moving the book sale to the library parking lot was more motivated by having too much volume to hold it indoors than concerns for COVID at first. But now that libraries are not allowed to host very many indoor activities it seemed like a good choice that allowed us flexibility and to make distancing easier. This year we sold over 1,000 books to our patrons. A special thank you to all those who helped up set up tents, sell books, or lug boxes and books and tables up from the basement,” commented Vermilion Public Library Librarian, Stuart Pauls. The Parent-Teacher Relationship Is Vital To Your Child’s Success

Throughout the school year, your c h i l d r e n ’s t e a c h e r s w o r k h a r d t o promote their academic success and instil valuable learning experiences. They are also responsible for most of the socialization that your child will receive outside the home. As a parent, your involvement in your children’s education goes a long way toward their well-being. Building a partnership between children, parents, and

their teachers is the real key to healthy development, from elementary school right through high school. At the beginning of a new school year, the first parent-teacher meeting is critical. If for some reason you cannot attend, be sure to contact the teacher to book an alternative time to meet. This is your chance to see for yourself the environment your children are spending their days in as well as

whom they are spending it with. At organized parent-teacher evenings, yo u w i l l a l s o b e a b l e to m e et t h e school’s administration and support staff, all of whom interact with your children regularly. Hearing about the school’s approach to teaching and its code of behaviour will help you to understand your children’s surroundings and what you can do to help them navigate through them. Don’t be afraid to ask the teachers for their class schedules. They will help you facilitate exchanges with your children about their school days and will give you an idea of the homework they

ought to be bringing home. Having a schedule on hand will also allow you to remind your children to bring gym c lothes an d librar y b o oks bac k to school on the appropriate days. Get over any shyness you may have about communicating with your children’s teachers directly. Call them at school or send notes or emails as frequently as you believe is required to help your children manage any difficulties. Most teachers understand the importance of the parent’s role in the education process and will make themselves available to answer questions or requests.

Cultivate-Rural Women’s Wellness Summit

Jenna Waltz a farm wife, mother of four, and a woman who possesses a passion for anything agriculture, is holding the first Cultivate – Rural Women’s Summit on October 26 and 27 at the Vermilion Regional Centre, as well as virtually. Waltz states that she has a “newfound passion” for wanting to help other women recognize their true potential. “I recognized a need to bring together like-minded people (women in particular) who live the rural lifestyle to focus on wellness and mental health,” commented Waltz. Waltz went on to say that the last year and a half has made it apparent the importance of community and togetherness and that mental health and self-care are things that many women, especially rural women take for granted.

“We often focus on our kids and the farm. Cultivate will remind women that they matter and that we need to make ourselves a priority. We will learn ways to care for ourselves and gather knowledge to benefit the farm and family members. There are so many ways we can be proactive with our health, and overall wellness, and Cultivate will bring together these concepts, ideas, and people,” said Waltz. Throughout the two-day event, speakers will discuss topics such as mental health, inspiration, natural wellness, organization, mindset, financials, personality types, and more. The event will consist of 14 guest speakers such as Erica Leniczek an agriculturebased mindset coach who will discuss the neuroscience behind fear, success and mindfulness and how they are linked. Vermilion, Alta. – On Sept. 24, 2021, at approximately 12:12 a.m., Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of a disturbance at a residence in the area of 47 Street and 50 Avenue in Vermilion, Alta. Preliminary investigation revealed that three suspects were seen banging at the door of a residence and a loud noise was heard. The suspects then fled the scene in a newer model black

September 23, 2021 - At its September meeting, County of Minburn Council passed Tax Incentive Bylaw #132221. This bylaw seeks to attract growth, to enc ourage development and to bring new investment to the County of Minburn through the use of tax incentives. Wainwright on September 21 to compete in zones. All of our boys played their hearts out, with Ace Wight from our school placing second overall! Our Senior girls volleyball team took home a silver medal after we hosted our home tournament last weekend. Well done girls! Grade one students in Ms. Svenungard’s class got together for an outdoor letter scavenger hunt with their Grade 4 reading buddies. They worked together to draw and write about what they found, it was a great learning experience for everyone. Spartan staff and students had fun dressing up as Lumberjacks on September 17. We love any excuse to wear plaid and a warm toque in the fall! Our cross country running team is headed to Riverdale for their first distance race of the year. Students in grades 6-12 have been training hard and are ready to run! Swimming lessons for our students have begun at Lakeland College. Over the next few weeks, all students in grades 1-5

will have the opportunity to participate and learn to swim. We are excited to make a splash! Every year on September 30th, people across Canada wear orange and participate in Orange Shirt Day events to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada. Orange Shirt Day originates from the story of Phyllis Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. In 1973, on her first day at St. Joseph’s Residential School in Williams Lake, BC, Phyllis’s shiny new orange shirt was stripped from her, never to be seen again. 40 years later, on September 30th, 2013, Phyllis spoke publicly for the first time about her experience, and thus began the Orange Shirt Day movement. We are encouraging all students and staff to wear orange on September 30th as we continue to learn and work together towards truth and reconciliation.

On September 17, VES supported the Terry Fox Run. We encouraged each student and staff member to make a toonie donation. We are proud to say that our “Toonie for Terry” campaign was so successful that we met our goal of raising over $500 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Super job VES staff and students. Mr. Haslehurst’s 4/5 class is practicing their map skills. Students have practiced using coordinates, lines of latitude, compass rose, and a map

legend. They are now drawing a map of their classroom with a legend. In gym they have started practicing the skills of soccer. 5B is currently studying wetlands in Science. They did some demonstrations that show some of the value that wetlands have for water conservation and quality. One demonstration used sponges to model a wetland’s water conser vation abilit y, another showed how they improve water quality through sediment settling, and the last exhibited a wetland’s water filtering ability. The value of these demonstrations to student learning was tremen-

dous. The Grade 6 students exercised their democratic right and par tici pated in Student Vote. Their ballots were counted and the results were submitted. The day after the election, they found out how the student vote compared to the real election results. Every year, Buffalo Trail School Division honours any employee who has put in years of service that is a multiple of five. This year from VES, we have two staff who are receiving that distinction. Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Erinn Baldwin for her five years of service and Mrs. Raelene Tupper for

her 15 years of service. The Hot Lunch Society is having their AGM on October 7 at 7:00pm at VES. They are looking for interested individuals who can help with the program this year. Specifically, they are looking for their treasurer position. Please join them to help make a difference in the lives of VES children.
