Burnt Rock Adventure Co. an outdoor enthusiast store owned by Toland Cochrane and Aaron Hayman opened its doors in May of 2021. The shop carries top of line products in pedal and electric hybrid bikes, scooters and accessories, longboards and skateboards, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, camping equip-

ment, and active wear apparel. With the change of seasons Burnt Rock Adventure will carry items that can be utilized throughout the winter. “We will be carrying winter apparel, cross country skies, snowshoes, as well as items for winter camping, but we will also still be carrying the spring/summer items so that customers can purchase them for Christmas and other special

occasions and also so they can plan their next year’s adventures,” commented Cochrane. The building in which the store is housed is a historical building that used to be the home of the Vermilion Standard. During the renovations the duo kept some of its historical and unique features. On September 17, the store had its

official Grand Opening and offered many in-store specials throughout the week, and was welcomed to the community by Mayor Caroline McAuley with a welcome plaque. “It’s exciting to have a locally owned store that promotes active living outside a n d c ar r i e s pr o d u c t s t h at c a n b e utilized in our wonderful outdoor parks,” commented Mayor McAuley.

Kalyna Country PCN, recently introduced Donna Tindall and Jaclyn Chartrand as their new Mental Health Navigators. The Mental Health Navigators will act as a hub to connect and support community members. To take a proactive approach towards our local commu-

nities mental health Jaclyn and Donna, as the Mental Health Navigators will help with various different services. They will help by contacting community members for initial assessment, determining the appropriate community-based mental health services and programs for each member, and will help with setting up appointments, filing paperwork, and

assisting them with connecting with the required supports. Even after the Mental Health Navigators help with determining what supports could be useful to an individual they will follow up with their family physician to provide updates to ensure that they are receiving the best quality of care. Donna will be serving the communities of Killam, Viking, Hardisty, and Tofield

and Jacyln will be Vermilion and Vegreville’s Navigator. Both Donna and Jacyln are passionate about mental health, and surely will be a great resource for their communities. Local Nurses Walk For Changes

This past June the Canadian Federation of Nurses Union (CFNU) held a virtual conference in which short staffing, unsafe workplaces, nursing staff burn out, overtime and vacant positions were discussed. September 17, 2021 was decided upon as a “day of action” to stop the downward spiral of longstanding nurse shortages, health and safety issues, and undervalued work. According to Megan Steiner, Local 55

President, this national day of action is needed to mobilize nurses, allies and suppor ters across Canada to unif y around a collective call for immediate action to address the nursing crisis. Canadian nurses’ average weekly overtime hours increased by 78 per cent during the pandemic. Overtime was even more significant in Ontario and Quebec, surging by 109 per cent and 173 per cent respectively during the same period. The cycle of excessive overtime and unsustainable workloads,

coupled with widespread verbal and physical violence, has meant nurses’ mental and physical health has deteriorated. “In Vermilion, Local 55 UNA members are frustrated and concerned with the path that healthcare is on. Understaffing and burnout lead to poorer patient conditions and outcomes and the staff are determined to provide the best care to our community as possible. To achieve this goal, they are asking to be valued and respected for the services

provided, as well as be provided with appropriate supports and safe workplaces to provide the highest level of patient care. We organized this information rally for Sept. 17 as a walk from the Vermilion Health Center to main street Vermilion, allowing the chance to talk with the public, raise concerns, and engage our community in the fight for excellent healthcare delivery in Vermilion,” commented Megan Steiner, Local 55 President.

A Little To Late Kenney By’

With hospitalizations and ICU cases sk yrocketing Premier Jason Kenney announced on September 15 that Alberta is in a state of emergency. To that, I say, NO S***! Kenney has pretty much admitted that they completely screwed this up and tried his best to back paddle when members of the media banged the hard questions at him. My thoughts on the whole matter run along the lines of it’s a little too late to start trying to fix the problem now! Hundreds of people are in hospital requiring supportive care and hundreds are in the ICUs fighting for their lives. Hundreds and possibly thousands of surgeries and procedures are being cancelled (in some cases causing people to lose their lives). Our healthcare system has all but collapsed and health care workers in all categories from maintenance and cleaning all the way to the doctors and nurses are exhausted! I am a conservative through and through, but in this case, I believe Kenney has failed us all with his half-assed plan he called

‘Open for Summer.’ I truly believe Kenney buckled under the pressure of the pressure groups and ran with his tail between his legs being too afraid to keep up what needed to be done!!! He wanted his Stampede and he got it, but on the backs of the Alberta people, and in my eyes that is not acceptable! I’m not saying he should have kept us in severe restrictions, but I am saying that he screwed the re-opening completely. Super spreader events should have had some sort of restrictions to help limit the spread, but instead, he tossed his arms up and basically said we are immortal now to this virus because we are 70 per cent vaccinated with one dose. In my opinion, it gave people a false sense of security! I was then and still am for opening us up to try and save the small businesses, but I think Kenney jumped the gun when he opened everything up prematurely and basically said that we are open, no minor restrictions are needed and we can all run around in super-spreader events with no form of restrictions. The simple restriction of putting on a face mask and maintaining social distancing in such events should have stayed in place. Kenney and his group are now blam-

ing the un-vaxxed population, saying it is a pandemic of the unvaccinated (and in some ways it is) but guess what, he as Premier (who supposedly has medical advisors) should have known better! He should have known that the 30 per cent who are still unvaccinated would be infected and would have some severe outcomes! He should have known that the vaccinated could still be infected and infect the unvaccinated and in some cases the vaccinated. I also feel as though their vaccine campaigns gave citizens the wrong impression of what the vaccine was capable of, it is meant to help prevent severe outcomes, but many people think they are immune to the virus, that they can’t get it and they can’t transmit it, but as we all know that isn’t the case! Instead of cruising around Alberta like a tourist poster child, he should have been working with the medical experts to figure out what the plan would be when it all happened and our healthcare system was overloaded. He should have been recruiting more healthcare staff such as nurses (instead of trying to beat them down with wage cuts etc.) He should have been trying to procure more ventilators and finding ways to extend the

As I write this the weather is changing to cooler, and we have to cover up some of our garden. By the time you read this the people of Canada will have decided on our next Prime Minister. I hope they choose well. I am hopeful for a change for the better. I am feeling a bit scattered, as news of more COVID regulations have just been released in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. We have never seen times like this. It is a bit unnerving. Now more than ever it is a time to stay

positive, to be happy and to be hopeful for better days ahead. Science has now shown that living a positive life, eating Mediterranean with more fruits and vegetables, and exercise increases the length of our telomers in our DNA, causing us to have longer healthier lives. Fear, stress and negativity on the other hand does the opposite, shortening our telomers, and decreasing our longevity and health. Science has proved the ancient Proverb, that a happy heart does good, like a medicine. While we can’t ignore what is going on all around us, we can control our response to it, and choose not to be ruled by fear, anxiety, worry and stress. The good thing about bad times is that they

don’t last. A while back I studied the blue zones of the world. These are the areas in the world where people live the longest healthiest lives. Here is what I discovered on living a long life: eat beans and lots of your own garden vegetables. Cut out processed and fast food. Get your beauty sleep, get active and de-stress your life. Make time for family and friends, have some laughs and be happy. Here is a Mediterranean styed salad to get you started. It was a tough year for many places in 1916. The First World War was raging and m a ny t o w n s w e r e dealing with the loss of many young men who had chosen to fight overseas. For Vermilion, it would be a good year and there was hope in the community the next year would be even better. Within the community, the number of businesses increased heavily as the town continued to prosper. There were new stores including a general store, a printing company, confectionary business, bakery,

garage, repair shop, butcher and more. The Imperial Oil Company would erect a large warehouse in the community, which delighted man who saw it as a sign of the growing importance of Vermilion. As with many places, there would be sad moments for the community because of the First World War. One man by the name of George Hening would be killed in action. He had owned a butcher shop with William Morgan, who would also enlist in 1916 but Morgan survived the year. Many other men from the community would enlist in that year as well. Prohibition was enacted in the community, as well as throughout Alberta, which resulted in the closing of the Brunswick

There was also an increase over previous years in the shipment of cattle and hogs. During the first part of the year, the 151st battalion was station at Vermilion, and that meant a monthly distribution of money into the town and district of about $7,500.

One company by the name of Colossal hopes one day it can br i n g m a m m ot h s back from extinction. After years of research they finally have received the funding they need to actually make the project a reality. On Monday, September 13, Biotech Entrepreneur Ben Lamm and renowned Harvard geneticist George Church, announced their plans to create a wooly mammoth. Through cutting edge gene editing techniques Colossal plans to splice their collected mammoth DNA with that of the Asian elephant. Those familiar with the classic Hollywood film franchise “Jurassic Park” might remember the scene where they describe how their dinosaurs are made. Much like in

the movie, Colossal will be using CRISPR to modify the DNA of a presently alive species. Thanks to uncovered Mammoth specimens in the melting permafrost of Siberia the team have usable DNA. By injecting the new genes into the genetic code of the Asian elephant and implanting it into the egg of a female elephant, Colossal will be able to create a living Mammoth. Of course, it is concerning that the elephants may experience complications in the pregnancy due to the larger size of Mammoths. However, these creatures won’t truly be exact replicas of prehistoric Mammoths, rather they will be hybrids with elephant and mammoth DNA. So, it is possible researchers could opt not to add the gene responsible for the larger size of mammoths or even tamper with it to create a safe yet, slightly larger creature than the elephant. By doing this they could in theory add more alterations to

the genes of the creatures each generation until they are satisfied with the result. In the future, who knows what other creatures could be revived. Perhaps the famous T-Rex will make a comeback in a real life dinosaur theme park. Even the Dodo bird could be given a second chance on this planet thanks to this incredible science. It is possible that once our understanding of genetics becomes more sophisticated, people may even design new creatures from scratch. Pulling bits and pieces from nature to create amalgamations of various plants and animals. Truthfully, the only limit is our imaginations. Of course, however the question of whether or not people should be tampering with nature in this way is something that has been up to debate for some time. Our Senior Girls Volleyball team battled to win gold in last weekend’s Megavolley tournament hosted at JR Robson. Way to go Spartans!! Our Senior Golf team competed in zones at the Grand Centre Golf Club. They enjoyed the beautiful day and Mr. Chase was proud to take our new school van on it’s first journey. Our students are not wasting a minute and have dove straight into their learning this year. The grade 2 classes at our school enjoyed reading the story Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. The class went outside to collect leaves and created a

They even experimented with adding lightbulbs, and batteries too. I wonder Miss Frankiw… how many grade 5 students does it take to change a lightbulb?!? We aren’t sure, but we know that your hard work is changing the world!! Looking ahead, our school will be holding our annual “Terry Fox Run” on September 23, 2021. We are asking students that are able to bring a toonie to donate towards cancer research. The Junior Golf team will also have the opportunity to compete this year in Provost on September 21. V ES s u p p o r t e d the Terr y Fox Run on September 17. This was a great opportunity for students in each division to come together to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Terry exemplified traits that VES values and practices such as perseverance, goal setting, leadership, empathy, and working together. This year we are learning, more than ever before, that together we are better. We asked each student and staff member to wear our school colours and we encouraged students to bring a toonie for a donation to the Terry Fox Foundation. We also supplied students with “I am running for..” tags to stick on their shirts while they did their laps. Division 1 walked from 12:301:05 and division 2 took their turn from 1:10-

Vermilion 4H Light Horse Club was excited to host the 51st Annual Rusty Bit Horse Show and Gymkhana at the fair grounds on Saturday Sept 11. It was a fun day of showing in the morning and gymkhana events in the afternoon. The high point winners in each group were: from left, Walk Trot: Casey Bunney, Junior: Brynn Murray, Intermediate: Madison MacDonald, Senior: Bailey Ferguson The Coutts family once again presented a handmade trophy to the overall high point winner. The Friends of Vermilion Health Centre used to hold a trip of the month fundraiser which helped suppor t the Vermilion Health Centre by raising funds for important equipment & projects that benefits the Community. This year the trip of the month raffle has been changed to a cash raf fle and the fundraising started on June 1, 2021. Over the past year Friends

of Vermilion Health Centre has used the donated funds to purchase a $600 media stand, three alternating pressure mattresses that cost $2422, track lift heads used to transfer residents for $3944 as well as fall protection mats that cost $1052 for the Vermilion Long Term Care Centre. The funds have also provided Friends of Vermilion Health Centre the opportunity to purc hase a $1759 plat form walker for the Physiotherapy department, a

Seer holter monitor ($2476.65) and an imaging chair ($3495) for the X-ray depar tment. The Operating Room / Day Surgery department received a Endoscopy processing system which is a camera and light source for cystoscopes for the urology program at a price of $28,250. Lakeland College Agriculture Technology Centre Grand Opening

On September 14 Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides, along with Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright MLA Garth Rowswell, Lakeland College President and CEO Dr. Alice WainwrightStewart, other Lakeland College board chairs, as well as supporters such as Lewis Farms, Innovation-Canada Foundation for Innovation, New Holland Agriculture, RBC Foundation, and MNP were in attendance to celebrate the Grand Opening and ribbon cutting of Lakeland’s new Agriculture Technology Centre. “The opening of the Agriculture Technology Centre presents an exciting new chapter for Lakeland College and agriculture science students from across the country. Being able to deliver Canada’s first degree program in agriculture technol-

ogy, in a state-of-the-art facility, continues to position Alberta as a world-class destination for post-secondary education,” says Minister Nicolaides. Lakeland College’s agriculture technology students and researchers now have a new central hub to explore, test, and apply all the latest technology while they develop skills needed by industry. The new centre is home to Lakeland’s new bachelor of agriculture technology program and ag tech applied research activities and is where students, faculty, and researchers will collect and analyze production and sustainability data generated across the commercial-scale Student-Managed Farm-Powered by New Holland. According to Lakeland College, the 743-square-meter facility features a technology hub with displays and analytical tools, combined lab and classroom space,

and an area for large equipment demonstrations. The centre is home to two labs, the Agriculture Technology Lab- Powered by New Holland and the Lewis Farms Data Lab. “Without technological advancements, traditional agriculture can’t keep up with the demands of today’s world. Vermilion Outreach School Feeds Their Community Partners

Due to an Alberta Addictions Grant that the Vermilion Wellness Coalition accessed and Vermilion Is Being Empowered (VIBE), the students at Vermilion Outreach School are going to be enjoying lunches from around the world for six weeks this fall. Beginning September 15, students will be preparing and enjoying food from Italy, Thailand and China. A homemade pasta meal is also planned, as well as a full roast beef dinner. With the help of their VIBE coach and school staff, students prepared several

pizzas on Wednesday to serve to their community partners. The RCMP, Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, Buffalo Trail Public School Staff, Lakeland College, Town of Vermilion, and County of Vermilion River Councillors were all invited to enjoy a fresh oven baked pizza at the Vermilion Heritage Oven. Since the remainder of the lunches will be at the school, just the students and staff will be able to enjoy their hard work, the Switching pizzas around in the oven. Photo Dawn Riley school felt that the pizza lunch was the perfect opportunity for the students to show off their cooking talents while thanking their community partners for their support.
