The Alber t a Rural Cr ime Watc h program was established back in 1978 but was known as the Range Patrol, due to a negative image in the media the name was changed to its current, Rural Crime Watch (RCW). According to https://www.ruralcrimewatch.ab.ca/ the vision of the Rural Crime Watch program is to help prevent crime by building relationships through promot i o n, c o m m u n i t y i nvo l ve m e n t a n d identifying future needs with effective communication. While the intent of the Rural Watch Program is to still provide the extra “eyes and ears” for the RCMP the focus has changed and is now to promote crime prevention through awareness, education and encouraging repor ting of suspicious activity when it is observed. The Vermilion and Kitscoty Rural Crime watch has now amalgamated to form the County of Vermilion River Rural Crime Watch Association. President of the Vermilion RCW Harr y Jacula said the reason they decided to amalgamate is that the Kitscoty RCW had received feedback from acreage owners and the town that they would like to be represented in the RCW and the protection it offers.

“ They approached us (Vermilion RCW) and after contacting all of the members of the association, I was able to tell Kitscoty that the response was overwhelmingly positive. Three members of our association and myself attended the Kitscoty AGM in April of 2019 where it was proposed to the approximately 100 plus people in attendance that we become one association. Again this was received positively by members present. Because of COVID, it has been a long time in coming, but the AGM of the new association is planned for April of 2022,” commented Jacula. As President of the Rural Crime Watch, Darrell Wright pointed out, many may think of rural as farms but rural includes all of the small towns and rural areas in the County of Vermilion River.

Yay, it ’s time to celebrate summer. I love the cool mornings and lush greenness everywhere. The heat of summer is upon us a little more intense, and a bit earlier than usual. Another thing to celebrate is the lifting of COVID restrictions. This is allowing families and friends to once again get together. These get togethers, while not centered around food, food is more often than not, an important part. Last week my article was full of easy meal ideas for hot summer days that required no oven, and minimal cooking. Here is another recipe to add to your summer recipe file. Peanut butter has many health benefits. It is a very good source of antioxidants. The mono-saturated fat in peanut

butter includes oleic acid, the kind found in olive oil. Monosaturated fat is heart protective by being associated with lowering bad cholesterol, while protecting good cholesterol. Peanuts are also a source of resveratrol. Reveratrol is the beneficial substance found in red wine. In the nurses’ health study, which involved 86,000 women, it was found that there was a correlation between nut consumption and a reduced risk of cardio-vascular disease. Many of the nutrients found in peanuts have anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown peanuts to reduce the risk of colon cancer, gall stones, weight gain and Alzheimer’s. Peanut butter is an excellent source of biotin, which is good for better blood sugar balance, lowering cholesterol and healthy hair and nails. For a healthier version, substitute stevia for most of the icing sugar, and opt for a dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.

You can also use coconut oil instead of the butter. As a word of caution, be sure to read the ingredient list on the peanut butter before you buy it, and avoid ones that are hydrogenated or have added sugar. This desert is super easy and quick to make. No Bake Peanut Butter Bars Base 1 1/2 cups graham wafer crumbs 1/2 cup butter or coconut oil. 1 cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy) 1/2 – 3/4 cup powdered icing sugar Topping 1 cup chocolate chips 2 tablespoons butter Line an 8 x 8 pan with wax paper or parchment paper. Combine the graham wafer crumbs, the melted butter, the

peanut butter, and the icing sugar. Press this mixture into the pan. In a small microwave safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and butter and microwave for 20 – 30 seconds and stir until melted. Spread on top of the peanut butter mixture, and refrigerate until chilled through. Cut into squares or bars.

One of the most important inventors of the 20th century was a man by the name of Guglielmo Marconi, who was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer. As a pioneer for longdistance radio transmission, he is credited as the inventor of the radio, wireless transmission and was awarded the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1901, he set up a kite in Newfoundland and broadcast signals across the Atlantic Ocean wirelessly, forever changing the world’s communication. So, what does that have to do with Vermilion? Upon his death on July 20, 1937 in Rome, J.W.G. Morrison, the mayor of Vermilion, came forward with his own stories of meeting with the great man 35 years previous in 1902.

At the time, Morrison was working in the newspaper field for the Associated Press and he came to know Marconi quite well as he would interview him not only in St. John’s, Newfoundland, but also a few months later at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Morrison would describe Marconi as a difficult man to interview, and that his subordinates, all of whom were English, were even worse to talk to. That being said, socially he was affable and a good conversationalist. Morrison also said that Marconi’s first wife was quite nice and that he would have tea with her and her husband several times. Morrison would see the four towers, 120 feet high, erected with large antennas on top through a grant from the Dominion government of $10,000 to aid the inventor in his development of wireless telegraphy. Of course, Morrison, watching this new wireless technology, also worried about what the future held for the newspaper industry if news could be wired so easily with

the advent of radios. Nonetheless, Morrison was able to create some excellent stories that looked at the inventor at a more personal level, along with his staff, during a turning point in human history. to help subsidize power for their homes. The traditional solar collection techniques with their large upfront costs and very inefficient energy collection have typically led to solar being more expensive than fossil fuels. kWh below that of fossil fuels for the first time. One company hopes to lead this new solar revolution by majorly reinventing the way solar energy is collected. The billionaire-backed startup, Heliogen, has made solar scalable by using mirrors instead of solar panels. These mirrors autonomously rotate to redirect sunlight towards a single point on a central tower. It is at this tower that the collection and storage of heat and production of electricity take place. A single tower can have thousands of mirrors all working together to bring the tower’s receiver to insane temperatures of 1500° C. This system allows Heliogen to be more affordable than traditional solar. Considering fields of solar panels can become difficult to scale due to high prices, mirrors even with their expensive central tower can be a much better option. Solar typically has the problem of being incapable of generating any power during the night, meaning it is only active around half of the time. This is unacceptable for a major fossil fuel replacement when people require their homes to stay heated all through the night and their refrigerators to stay cool. Of course, some systems have used batteries to store this kind of power through the night. Although, this adds more cost to an already unfeasible system, requiring double the amount of solar panels to account for the off hours. However, with

the new method, batteries are not needed, Heliogen stores heat rather than electricity. By simply heating rocks capable of holding temperature through the night, Heliogen can continue to produce its energy even when the sun goes down. This enables Heliogen to at a minimum double the efficiency of traditional solar technologies allowing it to beat even fossil fuels for the lowest cost per kWh. Heliogen is not just a solar panel replacement, the company also has plans to use this system to create hydrogen fuel. Through a process called hydrolysis, Heliogen will be able to use its collected sunlight to split water into oxygen and hydrogen, collecting the hydrogen for a transportable fuel. This is revolutionary for solar, it will allow for the production of energy in areas with lots of sunlight such as the equator, creating greater yields which can be transferred to areas unfavourable for the technology. This hydrogen fuel has the potential to be a zero-carbon emission alternative to traditional fuels. For reference, 2.2 pounds of hydrogen fuel has the same energy as 1 gallon of gasoline allowing for much more energy to be shipped and thus a much lower cost fuel. And if they can use their hydrogen fuel instead of gasoline for their carrier vehicles, the cost of shipping will lower, even further lowering the price of using their power everywhere as a result.

Cloverlodge Stampede A Go

Like pretty much everything in 2020 the Cloverlodge Stampede Association had to cancel their event due to COVID, but this year with COVID restrictions lifted the 41st Cloverlodge Stampede is a go and is co-sponsored by the Viking Ag Society. The Stampede will be located at the Cloverlodge Stampede grounds on the northeast corner of the Town of Viking and will run July 24 and 25. The event will feature all their past

year events such as, bareback and saddle broncs, tie-down roping, junior steer riding, steer wrestling, junior bull riding as well as ladies, junior and pee wee barrel racing, junior horse riding and bull riding, and the all time favourite with many stampede goers a beer garden will be available as well as hot food and non-serviced camping spaces. The event is family-friendly and will offer children activities including a bouncy castle for both days, a stick horse race, and a bicycle foot race.

The stampede performance will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday and fireworks will be blasted off at dusk. On Sunday the day will be kicked off with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. and a cowboy church service at 11 a.m. Stampede events will begin at 1 p.m. “We are so extremely grateful to be able to have our Stampede this year! We have installed new chutes and we are excited to show them off,” commented Muriel Hill, Secretary of the Cloverlodge Stampede Association.

Bargain Shop Has New Manager

As of June 29, the Bargain Shop in Vermilion has a new manager. Cori Dewolde began her career within the Red Apple 17 years ago, she worked at the High River Bargain Shop for 10 years and before moving to Vermilion she worked in the Claresholm location for 6.5 years. Dewolde is now residing in Vermilion with her partner Jerry and her two eldest boys Mitchell and Jason. Dewolde says she is thrilled with the wonderful staff currently working at the store and is looking forward to having a larger presence in the community. “We would like to participate in community events and fundraisers whenever we can. Each year we have a Fill the Sleigh event which I am looking forward to holding in Vermilion. We will also be participating in parades. If there are organizations

that are looking for help in fundraising they can always come see me and we can figure out if there is a way for us to help. I am very community-minded and I love being able to help whenever I can,” said Dewolde. Dewolde also commented that she is looking forward to getting to know the people of the community and is excited about getting to know people by name. “It is going to be great when I can start recognizing people who shop in the store and get to know their name, and as I shop locally I will get to know more peoples name, I truly believe in shopping local and supporting the stores of the community we reside in,” Dewolde commented. She also went on to say that she welcomes members of the community to stop in and say hi. Dewolde also explained that she takes customer service very seriously and is

eager to make the stores customers feel welcome and listened to. “If a customer has a complaint about a product or the store, I am eager to have them come and speak with me regarding the issue so we can do our best to make it right and have them have an enjoyable shopping experience,” explained Dewolde. Shoppers Drug Mart Staff Run For Women’s Mental Health

The staff of Shoppers Drug Mart once again raised money for the Lois Hole Foundation through Run for Women, a fundraising campaign designed to support women’s mental health programs. After participating virtually last year due to COVID restrictions, this year the staff were able to gather as a group and do the 5km run/walk along with their families. Beginning April 10, the fundraising kicked off with a snack basket draw and a staff bottle drive. For $2 customers could enter into a

draw for a snack basket and at the same time have their name put on a shoe icon in the store’s front window showing their support. The combination of the three efforts resulted in the store raising $1800 this year for the cause, something Store Front Manager Janice Hoffman is very proud of, “the staff were awesome and as always a great support for this cause. Events like this enhance our Shopper’s family strengths.” On July 6, the store drew Gail Tupper’s name as the winner of the snack basket. First Night Market Of The Season Has Great Turnout

Vermilion’s Night Market season began on July 8 with nice weather a n d a g r e at tur n o u t of c u s to m er s and vendors. Set up in two locations, outside on main street between 50 and 49 streets, and indoors at the Elk’s Hall, customers had the opportunity to browse and shop for a variety of products from 17 vendors. O r g anize d by H eat h er M illan of Upper Level Pottery and Art Gallery i n p a r t n e r s h i p w i t h t h e Ve r m i l i o n Farmers Market, the Night Market will be running ever y Thursday in July and August. Each night the outdoor portion will take place on a different

section of main street to highlight the various businesses and restaurants that the downtown core has to offer. The first market took place in front of Anthony’s Classic Grill and Copper Cork Distillery from 5 to 8 p.m. On July 15, the outdoor portion will be in front of The Red Brick and Night Owl, and on July 22, the market will be between Hubkins Restaurant and the Craig’s Cornerstone Building.
