Under sunny skies and beautiful temperatures the Dewberry Chuckwagon Racing Society held the first World Chuckwagon Races of the season from July 1-4. Hundreds of Chuckwagon fans filled the Grandstands and watched from their vehicles in drive-up style. Attendees had

In a very close Championship heat Layne MacGillivray beat out Kris Molle, and Obrey Motowylo with a penalty free race of 1:10:88 even though Kris Molle crossed the line first, but lost the win due to a time penalty. MacGillivray was driving the Cougar Fuels outfit, with outrider Trey MacGillivary.

County Of Vermilion Protective Services Update

The County of Vermilion Protective Services had a busy second half of June. They received numerous call outs for fires, Motor Vehicle Accidents and person assists. Fire Calls Starting on June 16 the Lloydminster Fire Service responded to the report of a structure fire involving two residences near 52nd Avenue and 16st Street. The fire caused limited damage due to the quick response and professionalism of the Firefighters. County of Vermilion River Chief Kirk Hughes attended the scene at the invitation of Chief Sawicki. On June 17, the Dewberry Fire & Rescue along with Clandonald Fire and Marwayne Fire responded to a calving barn fire. Three County engine/pumpers, two Command Trucks, one Wildland and one Tender/ Tanker as well as EMS, RCMP and ATCO attended the scene. Crews worked to fight the fire alongside a trackhoe which pulled apart hot spots caused by the bales. The fire was not considered suspicious. The Kitscoty Fire department along with the Blackfoot Fire and Rescue responded to a reported garage fire south of Township road 490. The crews quickly contained the source of the smoke and mitigated any damage on June 19. On the evening of June 23 Marwayne

Fire & Rescue were called out for a bale and field fire near Range Road 11. The bale stack fire was allowed to burn down as per protocol. However, the fire began to spread into a nearby field, wooded area and ravine. The Dewberry Fire & Rescue also attended the scene. The County Fire crew and Engine/Pumper remained on the scene until the early morning hours to monitor the bales with the landowner. A grassfire east of Range Road 33 headed toward structures and the Marwayne Fire and Dewberry Fire & Rescue were called out. Dewberry Fire & Rescue stood down while the Marwayne Firefighters worked on the property with the owner to extinguish the fire and completed hotspot checks, on June 26. Blackfoot Fire & Rescue and ATCO were also called out on the same day for downed powerlines across a roadway. Blackfoot Fire & Rescue blocked the road while ATCO contained the hazard and restored power. June 27, Kitscoty Fire was called out for a vehicle fire on Highway 897. Upon arrival the vehicle was fully engulfed and the crews worked to salvage as much as possible for the RCMP. Motor Vehicle Calls On June 18, County Protective Service received two separate Motor Vehicle Collision(MVC) calls. The first MVC was in the vicinity of Marwayne when tones

dropped around 8 a.m. for a collision involving a pick-up truck and a school bus. EMS treated and transported two patients as a precaution and the RCMP are investigating the cause of the incident. The second call was received by Vermilion Fire & Rescue just after 1 p.m. for a truck and trailer rollover on Highway 16, Vermilion Fire, EMS and RCMP attended the scene and no injuries were reported. June 19, Lloydminster Rescue Squad responded to a serious MVC near the border of the County of Vermilion River on the east side. Parts of highway 17 were closed. On June 22 at 8:50 p.m., tones dropped for a single vehicle rollover into a body of water. Due to the severity of the call and a possible entrapment Lloydminster Fire was dispatched by the RCMP as well as the Blackfoot Fire & Rescue. Once on scene the departments searched for victims but none were found. The scene was handed over to the RCMP for further investigation and follow-up. Kitscoty RCMP, Marwayne Fire with County Engine/Pumper, Marwayne Heavy Rescue and Rapid Responder attended a vehicle moose collision at 11:08 p.m. on June 25, no injuries were reported but the vehicle sustained frontal damage. Just before midnight on June 27, Marwayne Fire was called out for a vehicle/deer strike, some minor injuries were addressed on scene. Person Assistance Calls The County Protective Services also attended two person assist calls in the last two weeks of June. The first call was for a first response medical assistance on June 25 at 1:03 a.m. and Dewberry Fire & Rescue attended the call and provided patient care until the EMS arrived. The second was a Rescue Call on July 1 when two swimmers were reported missing on a river in the Marwayne area. Marwayne Fire responded along with

Vermilion Fire & Rescue Society with their water rescue equipment. The RCMP, EMS and County #9-1 were also dispatched. Chief Hughes who is an experienced Search Manager, arrived at the scene and took command. The crews searched up and down the stream to check shorelines. While coordinating efforts with the RCMP (who are the lead agency for Search and Rescue) two spotters on a bridge reported two figures in the water. Firefighters located the two swimmers and directed them to the shore. During the week of June 22, Firefighters from across the County as well as a student from Lakeland College attended the Wildland Fire Course. The course was instructed by Chief Training Officer Cam Stevenson and was hosted by Chief George Steiner at the Islay Fire station. Firefighters were tested on the ability to construct firelines with handtools, move water with portable pumps and engage in burn outs to stop progressing fire. The Islay Fire Station ‘Bush Buggy’ that was entered into service back in 1991 was retired from service in April 2021. Retired Director, Orest Popil during his service had anticipated the need and put funds away over the years to replace the Ford F250, as it was becoming tired and outdated. Current Director, Kirk Hughes made a proposal to Council and was approved for a new Ford F550 ROP unit and it was purchased from Rocky Mountain Phoenix. The new unit Wildland #3-4 (Islay being in the #3 fire district and 4 indicates that it is a wildland unit) entered service on June 28. “The unit is a ‘County’ assest and will be responding across the region in assistance to all County of Vermilion Fire Stations, mutual aid to our partners and anywhere a request is made for it’s services. Join us in welcoming our newest addition to the County of Fire Service!” stated Chief Kirk Hughes.

Kevin is deeply missed and leaves a huge void in our lives but he will remain in our hearts forever.

The dog days of summer rolled in early this year. We have just been through an incredible heat wave the end of June into July. It is the type of heat that we usually get the end of July. Coming up with ideas to cook for meals that don’t add more heat to the inside of your home is always a challenge. Here are a few ideas: egg salad on croissants, taco salad, barbequed burgers or steak, with potatoes wrapped in foil on the barbeque and a green leafy salad. Anytime you are super busy or it really hot is a great time to buy, a cooked chicken from the grocery store. To this chicken you can add cool and refreshing salads. Here are a few great ones that have been in previous articles: black bean and quinoa salad, beet salad, Greek salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, jellied salads, coleslaw and Caesar salad. Frittatas, chili, sloppy joes and tortilla wraps are other quick and easy

dishes. Don’t forget your slow cooker as a great way to cook meat. When it comes to desserts, we need ideas, without turning on the oven. Here are a few: cream pies with a graham wafer crust, rhubarb fool, rice crisp cake, puffed wheat cake, chocolate haystack drop cookies, confetti squares and no bake cheesecake. You can also enjoy ice cream and sherbet or turn frozen bananas and frozen fruit into healthy and creamy delights with a mini food processor and a bit of cream. Here is another no bake treat. It has only 2 tablespoon of sugar in the whole pan, and its gluten free. It is full of all of the goodness of coconut and chocolate, with very little sugar. Stevia is a sweet plant with very few calories and xylitol is made. Instead of the sugar and stevia you can use 1/4 cup of maple syrup. Joy Bars 3 cups unsweetened coconut (fine or medium) 1/2 cup coconut cream 6 tablespoons coconut oil 2 tablespoons of sugar 10 small packets of stevia or xylitol

Throughout the pandemic, market leader Amazon has increased its year-to-year sales by 40%. Amazon, although already the biggest company in the world, hasn’t been deterred from continuing its expansion. The company has plans to decrease the time needed to deliver packages from a few days to half an hour or less. They plan on using drones to deliver their packages as quickly as possible. According to their website, 80% of all packages will be

capable of being delivered by drone. U n l i ke t r a d i t i o n a l d e l i ve r y t h a t involves loading up a big truck to do bulk shipments, drones only carry one box. That may seem like a negative at first but in fact, this means that there is no waiting for a full truck before a package is shipped and no more inefficient paths. For example, drones don’t follow predefined roads, allowing them to take much direct paths, ignoring all ground obstacles and directly flying to the destination at heights of around 150 meters. This will dramatically change how shipments are handled and how people think about online shopping. Being able to click a button and having something

show up at your door in as little as 10 minutes is a game-changer. Drones will also allow for a better way to get produce as you could order groceries online and have them at your door almost instantly. Imagine ordering takeout from any restaurant and having it delivered by drones right to your front door quicker than you could have got it yourself. Well, the truth is not everyone will get to enjoy this luxury, only bigger cities with an Amazon fulfilment center will be able to have drone delivery. Luckily for some, Amazon is building an fulfillment center in Edmonton, with this one center the entire city will be covered with drone deliveries. However, places like

Vermilion may never be large enough for a fulfilment center, and unless something changes, are not close enough to get the service for the already built centers. This is because modern drones can only stay in the air for a limited duration due to their short battery life. So, Amazon is limiting its distance to 10 miles in any direction from a fulfillment centre or about 15 km. This, and the cargo weight limit of 5 lbs of makes the drones in their current form an imperfect solution. Hopefully in the years to come the delivery drone technology will improve and people all over will be able to experience these lightning fast shipment times.

Museum Acquires World War II Scrapbook

The Vermilion Heritage Museum recently received a scrapbook of Jesse Islay McDonald, a former Supervisor at the Canadian Women’s Army Corp (CWAC) Training Camp that was here in Vermilion during World War II. McDonald was in the area from October of 1942 to May of 1944, and her great-nephew Jeff contacted museum volunteer Loretta Quickstad wondering if the museum would be interested in having the scrapbook for display. The scrapbook highlights McDonald’s time here and her service time in Calgary which began in 1945. Quickstad plans on contacting museums in the Calgary area to see if they would like copies of the scrapbook. Being 70 years old, parts of the book are falling apart, including most pages the pictures were scotch taped to, the tape has disintegrated as has the paper, so a copy will be made that museum patrons can peruse. First Open Oven Of The Season Held June 30

Brooklyn Nelson and Amanda Collins were learning the trade of fine pizza cooking while providing families with Family Grab and Go Bags to kick off the summer season. Starting at 6 p.m. open pizza oven will be offered on Wednesdays all summer long, and is open to everyone, except

for August 23, which is meant for teens only, and the food will be provided by VIBE that night. Any student that will be entering Grade 7 and older in September are invited to come to the Heritage Park that evening for free food and some socialization. Remember to bring your pizza (thin

crust and thawed if frozen), and all utensils and dishes you need to enjoy it after it is baked. VIBE has several activities going on throughout Vermilion and the surrounding communities this summer, watch for posters or contact Pat Calyniuk at 780-853-3718.

Cruisin’ Classic Cars

Vermilion does not have an official classic car club, but Thursday evenings at A&W in Vermilion is the place to be if you are a classic car/truck enthusiast. “Our group meets at the Vermilion A&W on Thursday evenings when the weather is conducive for that and we admire each other’s cars and chat about the hobby. It’s part of Cruisin’ the Dub which has been around for a while. Most of us remember the good old days when you pulled into the local A&W with your favourite buddies or to show off your new girlfriend and sat around in your cars while you got your frosty root beer and a burger delivered to your window. I think this is a throwback to those good times,” said participant Greg Stolz. Owners from Vermilion (and sometimes surrounding areas) showcase their classic cars which they have proudly purchased and often restored themselves or with the help of professionals. “We are an informal group of local likeminded individuals that have an interest in classic cars and trucks of all shapes and sizes. Some of us have built our cars from the ground up and others have acquired them in various condition or during different stages of restoration. Some of the cars required a lot of work and money to bring them back to show and driving condition. Others like my car, are considered unrestored originals meaning they were kept in pristine condition by meticulous owners for their entire life. Others may be considered

resto-mods meaning the body resembles a certain make and model but there are so many personal modifications done to them that no two are alike. You never know what you will see when you open up the hood or take a closer look at these models. There are a lot of classics around that never get

out of garages either, which is a shame, but the hobby is unique to all,” commented Greg Stoltz. While out with their classic cars/ trucks owners like to take the opportunity to chat and socialize amongst each other and attendees.

“Topics we frequently discuss includes the history of the cars, any unique features, the number of that model built, ability or leads in obtaining parts and other show events. We enjoy making new friends and the general comradery amongst those that show up,” explained Stoltz.

The End Of Clandonald School

With the last day of the 2020-2021 school year, the end of Clandonald School became a reality. Due to a combination of funding cuts from the province and a continual decline in enrollment, Buffalo Trail Public School announced in March that this past school year would be the last year of operation after over 100 years of education in the area. First established as Wellsdale School in roughly 1910, Clandonald School Division came to be in 1928, with school being held in the Orange Hall. It was not until after the Depression that a building could be constructed, so during the 1930’s students attended school at the convent on the south end of town. A new school was erected in 1940, and by 1956, four rooms were required to house all the students

comfortably. Meanwhile, the Clandonald Separate School was established in 1929. This school was housed in the convent, and run by the Benedictine Sisters until 1932, when the Sisters of St. Joseph from Peterborough took over and added a boarding school. During the 1940’s and 50’s, various stages of expansion were required to accommodate the growing number of students, and by 1960, several buildings had been built and added on to. When the separate school division dissolved in 1969, and students from both divisions began attending school under the public umbrella in the same building, made up of the 1960 separate school and its 1965 addition. In the 1980’s the north classroom became home to The Clandonald Friendship Club, and to the Clandonald Early

Childhood Society, who provided kindergarten classes. In 1995, Clandonald School became part of the newly formed Buffalo Trail Regional Division No. 28, and remained a part of that division until this June. Loretta Quickstad former student and staff member can vividly recall the May 17 fire in 2002. It fortunately was a non-instructional day, so no students were in the building, only staff. The staff could smell something burning and when Principal Terry Stachniak returned to the room, he told the staff to grab their important things and leave the building. Quickstad recalls it being a hot windy day, potential conditions for a fire to spread. Due to a fire on the Cusak land that morning however, the local fire

trucks were already loaded with water and ready to go, and in combination with a local farmer who had his water truck nearby, only the 1952 portion of the building was damaged. Clean up was done quickly, and within a week, students were back on the west side of the building attending classes while the east end was renovated. While the structures that housed Clandonald School over the past 100 years have changed, moved, been rebuilt and demolished, the spirit of the school and the memories made by the students, families and staff will always be a part of the community.

With the COVID-19 restrictions that had been in place for the last 16 months lifted MMIFCSS along with many different partners were able to hold Canada Day celebrations in Mannville on July 1. The day began with opening speeches from FCSS Summer Student Elizabeth Lenko and Jocelyne Lanovaz who spoke on behalf of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homenuik, who could not be in attendance. Lenko did the Indigenous Acknowledgment. “Welcome everyone to Canada Day 2021, we are really excited to see everyone here today. Together with Payton

I would like to begin today with the realities of our world and ask everyone to spend a moment taking in our version of a memorial for the Indigenous lives that were lost and changed. We have placed orange ribbons up and down Mainstreet. FCSS is about individuals, families and community and the Canada Day celebration reflected that with the many activities the attendees could enjoy throughout the day. The festivities included numerous street games such as connect four, bocce ball, cornhole, etc. There were classic cars and muscles cars from members of the Mannville Classic Car club for viewing. There was also Mini golf, and a scavenger hunt where participants had to try and locate the 21 Canada flags which were placed throughout the community. Free cinnamon buns provided by FCSS were available at Alberta’s Own Restaurant, Cornerstone Co-op and Something Sweet Coffee & Bake Shop with the purchase of a beverage. “FCSS collaborates with many partners

throughout the year and this is an example of those collaborations where everyone comes together to showcase the dynamic community we live in. We are fortunate to have great people working together for the betterment of everyone. I would like to extend a grateful thank you to those collaborative partnerships. I would like to acknowledge Payton Konieczny and Elizabeth Lenko for the coordinating efforts of pulling together this year’s Canada Day,” said Jannette Riedel, M-M-I F.C.S.S. The Grade 6 students had their Farewell Day on June 28. They had a simple ceremony in the morning, with the presen-

tation of certificates. The following presentations were made: Beckie Scott Award - Taylor Blackmore and Autumn Court, Mad Scientist Award – Noah Leipert and Carter Jaremco, Athletics and Sportsmanship Award – Aidan Ouellette and Taylor Loades, Artistic Award - Asia Clarke and Jillian Wilkinson, Honor Roll Royalty - Alli Cowe and Kaedence Eriksen, Citizenship Award - Denae McGrath and Arenas Abuzukar, Attendance Award - Alexander Spicer and Brogan Ireland. We would like to give our best wishes to all the Grade 6 students. On the last day of school, the Grade 1 students ventured out into the heat and walked downtown to visit some of the landmarks they learned about in social studies. They visited the cenotaph and had a

water break and snack, and then had their picture taken by Craig’s. They even got to go into Burnt Rock and talk about bike safety. Gavin’s great, great, great grandpa, SRP Cooper, started the newspaper, The Standard, there in 1909. From there, the Grade 1 students went to the Imperial Block. Earlier in the year, they had learned that the bricks that made this building were from the clay from the Vermilion River and were made at the Vermilion Brick Factory. Their classmate, Logan, even lives in this building. Their day ended with the making of delicious “solar s’mores”. Weezie is a sweet, loving, nervous little gal that is just looking for a home that she can call her very own and with people that will love her that way she needs to be loved.
