East-West Chapter - Triple Drive Event

The East-West Chapter of the Alberta Carriage Driving Association held a Triple Drive Event which was sponsored by the Vermilion Ag Society at the Ag grounds on June 19 and 20. There were two Continuous Drive competitions held on June 19 in the morning and afternoon and a third competition held on June 20 in the morning. The competition was organized by Chapter president, Lorraine Dibben and was judged by Kathleen Winfield, President of the Jury (Dressage Judge), Chuck Taylor, Ground Jury (Cones Judge), Byron Crook, and Technical Delegate (Derby Judge). All COVID -19 restrictions were in place and followed throughout the competition.

The East-West Chapter is one of the driving chapters under the ACDA Association and is a non-profit organization that services northeastern Alberta and northwestern Saskatchewan. The association provides carriage driver enthusiasts handson seminars, driving competitions, clinics, a pleasure show and many fun activities each year. The East-West Chapter is now in its 31st year and holds annual events such as a Clinic in May, an Open Driving show on July 10 in Vermilion, a Fun Day in August, a Fall drive in September, Sleigh ride in December, and the Cutter Rally for cancer in Lloydminster in February. Haying In The ‘30s Makes Difficult Decision

Haying in the ‘30s Cancer Support Society located in Mallaig has made yet another difficult decision regarding their annual twoday fundraising event due to COVID. “We want to be able to provide the same quality event as we did prior to the pandemic, and we do not feel that would be possible this year, so the board has decided to cancel this year’s annual event,” said president Martin Naundorf, “there are just too many uncertainties around the restrictions for the number of people we have attending for those two days.” The event is usually held during the August Heritage Day weekend and is funded by sponsors and volunteers. The free camping event usually requires 250-300 volunteers and offers demos of hay cutting with a horse-drawn mower, hay baling by horsepower, threshing grain, weld-

During the downtime the society plans to continue making improvements to the site over the summer, which will include adding in new buildings, such as a shed, windmill grinder, donation centre and completing a kitchen expansion. The Haying in the ‘30s Society has helped individuals battling cancer since 1999 when it was founded by Edgar Corbiere. Last year, the society helped 334 individuals which totalled $334,000. Since January of this year, the Society has helped 200 cancer victims totalling $200,000. Naundorf commented that donations to the society are still coming in strong, but there are a lot of people to help.

If you would like a tax receipt, you can provide your name, address and email in the message portion of the e-transfer and the receipt will be emailed to you. Donations can also be made by cheque and a tax receipt is available for all donations over $25. One hundred per cent of the donations received by the Society are given to cancer victims for support during their treatment. Naudorf also mentioned that the society always needs volunteers and that they are so appreciative for the volunteers they have and to anyone who donates to their

3D printers make it possible for anyone to have their own personal assembly line. From personal home printers to mass production industrial printers, 3D printing is the future of production. Almost anything is possible with 3D printing technologies, replacement parts, working guns, and even sports cars. So, how is it possible that one technology could create so many different things, and how does it work? 3D printers function by building the item they are assigned to from the ground up layer by layer. Every 3D printer requires different material as its input, often called a filament. For a standard household PLA printer, it takes anywhere between 1 hour to 5 days to finish a print, depending on the size of the model and assuming there weren’t any errors with the print that would require it to be restarted. Some new printing applications are bringing 3D printing to much larger scales. For example, Peri, one construction company is printing houses using their giant concrete printers. They set the machine up in a new location, and let it run to build the structure of the house, while workers install windows, doors and other delicate features. There are even plans to use rovers to act as 3D printers on Mars, building large domes from the naturally iron rich soil on the planet. This would make it much easier for people to live in once they arrive to colonize the planet. Another example of a new 3D printing use is the Czinger 21C, the world’s first 3D printed sports car. The vehicle has a surprisingly nice design considering it is 3D printed, and It doesn’t show the layer lines that are traditionally expected with many 3D printing technologies. There is even research into printing human organs from stem cells to create a customized transplant that has almost no risk of rejection due to it being built from the DNA of the recipient. Although this is in early stages of what it will eventually become, this technology is going to change the world forever, considering they already have used it for printing bladder transplants. The Potential of 3D printing is virtually limitless, anyone who can afford a 3D printer could create almost anything they could dream up and its only getting started.

Vermilion, AB- June 17, 2021- Following Premier Kenney’s recent announcement detailing Alberta’s “open for summer” plan, we know that within our community, there was hope felt regarding our beloved annual fair. The membership of the Vermilion Agricultural Society has spent many hours taking an in-depth look at whether we could host the fair at a calibre that our community deserves and has celebrated since 1906. After many discussions and explorations into what it would entail to have the 2021 fair, the Vermilion Agricultural Society has made the difficult decision that the Vermilion Fair will not take place this summer. It takes hundreds of volunteers to deliver

the fair to our community while bringing far goers from all around our province into the Town of Vermilion. At this time, the Vermilion Agricultural Society feels the comfort and safety of our community, volunteers, exhibitors, and would-be attendees is best served by celebrating within our community. We still intend to hold the smaller events that we have previously announced. We encourage you to celebrate with us during our fireworks show on July 31 to commemorate our 115th anniversary. The War Amps has supported their family, from the day their daughter, Michaela Blakslee, was born missing part of her left arm, as well as some fingers and toes. As a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, Michaela receives financial assistance for artificial limbs and devices and also attends regional seminars where Champs and their parents learn about the latest in artificial limbs, dealing with teasing and staring, and parenting an amputee child. Established almost 40 years ago, the Vermilion River Archers is one of Vermilion’s hidden gems. Based out of the armouries building, the archery club is open to people of all ages, and has remained active since its inception in 1984. Even though the regular archery season runs from November to roughly the end of April, the club can provide coaching/teaching to groups all year. During the winter season, classes run on Monday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for youth and 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. for adults. The club does own equip-

ment for youth to access, but they encourage adults to provide their own. The River Archers are an affiliated member of the Alberta Bowhunters Association and club members are signed up to become Bowhunter association members when they join. Being an association member provides the club with insurance coverage and access to archery events that happen throughout the province. CARETAKER POSITION We are looking to fill two positions at Lakeland Mall. We require a full-time caretaker who will need to be familiar with all types of building maintenance and one part time person with similar capabilities: • Specifically, must be familiar with all types of maintenance and be able to repair all building components when required. Government Seeking Agricultural Policy Framework Feedback Dawn Riley Reporter

60:40 basis.’ Consultations were set in motion on June 3, and will help shape the direction of the Next Agricultural Policy Framework by gathering the experience and ideas from stakeholders on all levels of agriculture. The Government would like to collaborate with its provincial and territorial partners, Canadians, and all stakeholders including agricultural producers and processors, women in agriculture, youth, Indigenous communities, environmental organizations, and small and emerging subsectors to not only seek feedback, but also help develop the next Framework. Working together, the priorities and vision of the framework will be developed. On a provincial level, Alberta Agriculture Minister Devin Dreeshen is seeking out feedback on an online survey that closes July 2, 2021. On the Alberta government website Dreeshen states “Alberta’s agri-food sector is doing well despite the challenges in recent years, but we know that challenges will likely continue to persist. Through CAP and the

NPF, we will support Alberta’s Recovery Plan through increased investment attraction and improved market access. We are pushing forward with an aggressive strategy to bring investment to our processing and primary agriculture sectors, while also setting ambitious growth targets.” The province is also collaborating with the other prairie provinces to establish fair and equitable national Agricultural Partnerships programs for all impacted sectors. To aid stakeholders benefiting from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP), the Alberta government has made accessing the grant money available easier than it was in the past. The application process has been streamlined and simplified, promoting the ability to create jobs and drive money into Alberta’s economy. The funding from

Planning for the next Agricultural Policy Framework has begun on both provincial and federal levels, and input and feedback is wanted. This framework is intended to replace the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year, $3 billion investment by Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen and grow Canada’s agri-food and agri-products sectors. The partnership expires in 2023, and policy negotiations will begin at the Ministers of Agriculture conference this fall.
