The Vermilion & District Housing Foundation received a $5000 donation from the Million Dollar Round Table association (MDRT) on December 18 to purchase a specialized bed. The donation was sponsored by member Meagan S. Balaneski, who has been a member of the MDRT
since 2012. Meagan is currently a Certified Financial Planner with Manulife Securities Incorporated. “The specialized bed will be utilized in supportive living to assist with the needs of our residents,� commented Brittany Lysons, Recreation Director. The MDRT was founded in 1927 and is an independent association consisting
of more than 72,000 leading life insurance and financial service professionals that come from more than 500 companies in 70 nations. The Vermilion & District Housing Foundation has been providing affordable housing to seniors and families for more than 55 years. The Foundation manages and operates 170 units distributed throughout seven
manors and lodges; Westend Manor, Parkway Manor, Valley View Manor, and Pioneer Haven in Islay, as well as community housing for low-income families in Vermilion. Vermilion & District Housing Foundation expanded their locations to include Chauvin, Edgerton, Irma, Dewberry and Wainwright, totaling 60 additional units as of January 1, 2021.

OBITUARY FOR
Nestor Bohaichuk Nestor Bohaichuk passed away on December 30, 2020 in Vermilion at the age of 91 years. Nestor contributed to the Mannville and surrounding communities throughout his life and touched many people: he was a school teacher and vice principal at Mannville School for over 40 years, served as Mayor of Mannville, and was a member of the Elks of Canada for over 50 years. He even had a role as student driving instructor and community photographer, including weddings! He had a lifelong friendship with the Coulter clan and others from the Chailey district, his first teaching job. A lifelong learner, Nestor was interested in the sciences in particular, and in the latest gadgets. He particularly enjoyed his "tab" (tablet), communicating with his family and friends here and around the world via video calls, and listening to hour upon hour of music via you tube! He was passionate about photography, snowmobiling, exploring and hiking in the outdoors, camping, and overseeing the potato crop, sunflowers, and crab apple sauce making! Despite his many achievements, the pride of Nestor’s life was marrying his beautiful and dedicated wife Helen, raising 5 children, and later being ‘Gido’ to 10 grandchildren. He was immensely proud of the adult each of them became and expected their close knit family spirit to continue in his 9 great grandchildren (whom he called his " Great Ones" ) and their families. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Christine (Doug) Boyd, Joan (Ken) Brodziak, Dave (Jan), Jim, and Ernie (Sue); his grandchildren Patrick (Kristin), Stephen, Ben (Anna), Lisa, Andy (Stephanie), Jonathan (Kaylin), Stephanie, Katarina, Mandy (Dustin), and Chris (Lindsay); great grandchildren Daniel, Luke, Mason, Ryder, Maddock, Will, Brinley, Ava and Grace; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Helen; parents John and Maria; infant daughters Katherine and Dianne; and grandson Richard. A private family service took place. HENRY "HANK" WASYLIK Henry "Hank" Wasylik of Calgary, formerly of Vermilion, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at the age of 77 years. Henry is forever loved and deeply missed by his Loving Wife of 52 years Barbara; Loving Daughter Melanie and Son in-law Jason Molloy of Calgary; 2 Granddaughters Penny and Jordyn Molloy of Calgary; Son in-law Brian Kochan of Vermilion; Sister Olga Dutchak of Vermilion; Brother Allen Wasylik of Edmonton. He was predeceased by his Daughter Penny Kochan; Parents Nick and Sophie Wasylik; Sister Lil Smith; Brothers John, Peter and Ed Wasylik. Henry lived most of this life in Vermilion before moving to Calgary 11years ago to be closer to his daughter Melanie and granddaughters Penny and Jordyn. Watching them grow up brought great joy to his life. Most people in this community know Henry for his successful construction business and his involvement in sports (both playing and coaching). Hockey was his passion and he was able to play the game until four years ago. Henry believed that anything worth doing was worth doing well and that’s how he lived his life (with pride and passion). At the end of a hard day he would still take the time to coach his girls ball teams and teach them how to play golf. We miss him deeply and wish the time we had would have lasted forever. We are humbled by the outpouring of love and support for our family at this difficult time. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all who sent flowers, cards and food, made phone calls, left messages on web-sites and made donations to charities in Henrys memory and everyone who had us in their thoughts and prayers. A special thank you to our friends John Reynolds, Larry Myshak, Nick Westman, Mike Macnab, Rick Venance and our Calgary friends for their part in Henrys virtual tribute. Another very special thank you to Harry and Alva Creech and their staff for going above and beyond to help us through this difficult time. Coming to my home in Calgary meant so much to us. Sweet And Sour Spareribs
will only purchase Canadian pork. Pork is full of B vitamins. A serving of pork contains 160 percent of Thiamin, vitamin B1, which is good for your heart and energy creation. Pork is a good source of Niacin, 80 percent which is needed for mental health, your nervous system and energy. Pork also contains Pantothenic Acid, vitamin B5 which is needed for mental performance. Pork is also high in Vitamin B12 and B6 which both support the immune system and Phosphorus which support the health of our bones and teeth.
This dish represents a combination of both sweet and sour flavours from the brown sugar and the vinegar. On the Prairies, in rural areas from the 1960’s onward a good restaurant could always be found that specialized in Chinese food. I think it is how we developed a taste and love for Sweet and Sour Spareribs. This dish is excellent served with rice. Sweet and Sour Spareribs 1 1/2 pounds spare ribs 1 can tomato sauce 2/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup vinegar 1/4 cup ketchup 1 tablespoon soya sauce 1 tablespoon cornstarch Cut the spare ribs into single ribs. Place the ribs in a roaster, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook the spare ribs in the oven until browned and tender. Drain off any excess fat. Combine tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, soya sauce and cornstarch. Pour it over the spareribs and continue to cook for an additional 1/2 hour.

The Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club held its first meeting of the year on October 23, 2020. We have 15 members this year - 9 regular members and 6 Cleaver kids! Our Club President is Mia Westergaard, VicePresident is Dylan Cannan, Secretary is Avery Corbiere, Treasurer is Emery Zayac, Club Historian is Katie Sargeant, our Social Convenor is Mackenzie Flanders and then there’s me, Nora Newman, the Club Reporter. Our District 4-H reps are Mia Westergaard and Clay Corbiere and our Regional Sheep Committee member is Mackenzie Flanders. Our General

Marwayne Hotel

Lo c ate d i n t h e community of Marwayne, you will find a t wo -storey wood framed hotel that is prominently standing across the street from where the railway station once stood in the community. It is one of the oldest buildings in the community, featuring many of its original features. It was on January 12, 1925 that the Canadian Pacific Railway gave title to 40 acres of land for the town site of Marwayne. It was one of the newest communities in
the province and it came into existence almost over night in August of 1926 with lots selling very quickly and several buildings being constructed. One of those buildings was the hotel built by W.E. Fleming. The building was built facing the Canadian Pacific Railway station across the street. The hotel features a dining room on the main floor and accommodations on the second floor, where there was a large balcony. The tavern had a door that stated Men Only, and another door to the side that said Women and Escorts. Through the years, the hotel operated accommodations, dining rooms and taverns, but the name always stayed as

the Marwayne hotel until 2002 when it became The Outsiders Inn, before reverting back to its original name in 2006. Through its entire history, dating back almost 100 years now, the hotel was only closed once, for three years, but has remained open for the most part outside of that. The hotel has also seen its fair share of disasters. In 1949 a windstorm destroyed the granaries and several train cars across the street, while a 1954 fire destroyed buildings near to it. In 1955, a blizzard left four-to-six inch snow drifts, and another fire in 1973 also put the hotel in danger but it was spared the flames. In 1986, a flash
flood also caused damage to many parts of the community but the hotel continued on. Today, the hotel is a Municipal Historic Resource, having been designated as such on Aug. 8, 2011. Unique Judging Club Fundraiser

Lakeland College’s Judging Club hosted a unique fundraiser on December 4 in which students pay to smash a car. The Judging Club’s annual fundraiser is usually Band In The Sand, a rodeo hosted at the college. Last year, the Judging Club ran the bar for Band in the

Sand and received a portion of the profit. However, due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of the event, the club’s plans had to change. “We came up with the idea to smash the car because people are usually stressed about finals around that time,” said Judging Club president Bobbi Foster. For five dollars, students could smash any part of the car for one minute except for taillights, mirrors, and glass. To smash each window in the car was $20, which included another one-minute car smash, and taillights and headlights were $10. In total, approximately 40 to 50 people participated, and the club raised $290. The car was donated by Vermilion Valley
Auto Parts and the college farm donated a tarp to make cleanup after the event easier. Lakeland College’s Judging Club is a club in which participants can practice judging various types of livestock. The club participates in competitions across Canada and planned on going to Guelf this year prior to COVID-19 restrictions. “This year looks quite a bit different, but we’re still practicing,” Foster explained. The club consists of members of varying levels of experience, from beginners to those who have participated in provincial and national competitions. “We’ll likely be doing another car smash this semester around finals,” Foster added, “it went really well.”

The Mystery Of The Symbol On The Front Of CIBC Solved

Have you ever noticed the symbol that is embedded in the parapet of the CIBC bank on main street? I did and the first thing that came to mind was a medical symbol. I noticed the symbol one day while I was parked in front of Craigs and wondered if the building was ever used as a medical facility? Of course, I wouldn’t have any clue of the history as I am not originally from Vermilion, so I had to do a little digging to find out. I quickly discovered that the building was built in 1918 by the Canadian Bank of Commerce according to the Vermilion Historic Walking Trail, so no, there would be no reason for the bank building to have a medical symbol on it. Therefore, I had to start digging a little deeper trying to find out what the symbol could be and what it would represent. The first thing I did was to contact the Mayor, she, like me, didn’t know and suggested the archives in Edmonton, but no luck there, so I had to think of something else, the internet, it has to know, right? After a little
more digging and typing in CIBC symbols, logos etc. several times I came across an article on https://tayloronhistory.com/category/bank-of-commerce-on-king-street for the 150th anniversary of CIBC, in the article there were pictures of a chandelier that had the same looking symbol as the one on the front top of our CIBC. In the picture caption, it said that the bottom tier of the chandelier contained the Caduceus. I’m thinking great, I’m on the right track. I immediately started looking up the Caduceus symbol and discovered the Caduceus symbol is often confused with the Rod of Asclepius as they are quite similar in appearance, however, the Caduceus symbol is the traditional symbol of Hermes and features two snakes winding around a staff. Ah-ha, I’m getting somewhere, continues reading and it says that the caduceus in Greek mythology, is a symbol of commerce and negotiation. Right on, that makes sense! Looking a little deeper I discover that the Rod of Asclepius is a serpent-entwined staff belonging to the Greek God of medicine and healthcare.

Digging a little more I came across an article on https://forgottenalberta.com/2015/10/09/ fabtrip15-the-mystery-of-the-empresscaduceus which is written by a gentleman by the name of Jonathan Koch, he too had been on the hunt to discover the history of the same symbol on the top front of a building in the village of Empress which is about 140 km north of Medicine Hat which he describes as a charming art room, tea room and gift shop known as ‘That’s Empressive.’ According to Jonathan’s writings and that of the article for 150th Anniversary of CIBC, it appears the Canadian Bank of Commerce adopted the Caduceus symbol as their logo way back in the day and had it embedded into their building’s parapet. Western Institute Of Emergency Education Purchases New Ambulance Simulators

The Western Institute of Emergency Education (WIEE|) has added a new state of the art Ambulance Simulator to their Vermilion and Sherwood Park locations. The new simulators crossed the border into Canada from Texas in early November and can be used to train a variety of medical personnel. “The simulator is used for training first responders. We can train first aiders, first responders, fire fighters, nurses and doctors,” said Advanced Care Paramedic and Owner, Shane Croke. Croke who has over 20 years of experience in the EMS industry also went on to say that they can do recertification’s, modified training and advanced care training. The simulators provide the most realistic
hands-on experience and each student has the opportunity to complete a scenario from start to finish and the ambulance simulator is fully loaded with lighting, a stretcher, IV’s, catheters, oxygen, and a suction unit. “Rather than imaging what it would be like to care for a patient on the way to the hospital from an emergency scene they can do it in the simulator,” explained Croke. The simulators are $50,000 each and to have them fully stocked and ready to go costs around $65,000. Croke explained that NAIT does have a version of the same type of simulator but is not quite the same as the new version they currently have. “They have a simulator for training but it is not the same as the one we have now. From what we understand these two simulators we have are the only copies of this version in Alberta, possibly even Canada,”
said Croke. According to Croke the simulators are versatile and not just for one population. They provide not only visual, but a handson experience for proper structure handling. “Each student who walks into our facility will get an enhanced learning experience. There are multiple cameras in the simulator that records and displays what each student is doing as they are working on a patient, this allows them to rewatch what they did as they debrief and critique their own actions,” explained Croke. WIEE offers a wide range of services including the Alberta Paramedics Drivers Operator course, EMS Safety programs, Infection Control Training, Mental Health programs, ACP exam prep, Advanced First
Aid, Medical First Responder course, EMR Refresher, Youth courses, BLS programs, First Aid and CPR programs, Health Care course and Safety courses, Instructor courses, Online safety courses such as WHIMIS, TDG and Ground Disturbance Supervisor training. They also offer Drug and Alcohol testing and FIT testing. The WIEE also has ALEX which is an interactive mannequin that has cameras, movement, sound and speech and they also have six adult and six child mannequins. Currently all of their programs are running and they have options for in class training with restrictions and following all COVID guidelines as well as a variety of online and virtual training options.

Lloydminster RCMP Arrest Two For Drug And Weapons Offences
Lloydminster RCMP Submitted
Lloydminster, Alta.- On January 1st, 2021 Lloydminster RCMP members conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle in the area of 48 Street and 50 Avenue. The occupants were located in breach of several conditions of their release orders which lead to an arrest. During a search of the accused and their vehicle, a large amount of methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl was located along with several weapons and an undisclosed amount of cash. Cory Redman, 32, of Montreal Lake, SK and Brendan
Strongarm, 24, of Big Island Cree Territory, SK have been charged with: Possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking (x 3) Possession of property obtained by crime Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose (x2) Possession of a firearm while prohibited Failure to comply with release order (x7) Both males were remanded into custody and appear in Lloydminster, AB Provincial Court on JanuWeapons and drugs seized. COVID-19 Vaccine And Update

The first rollout of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine in Alberta was issued on December 15 to frontline workers and other individuals particularly vulnerable to the virus. The Pfizer vaccine is the first COVID19 vaccine to be issued in Canada. The vaccine is administered in two doses 21 days apar t. Studies show that this vaccine is 95 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 after 1 week of the second dose. The vaccine is approved for ages 16 and up and side effects are that of a common vaccine:
pain at the site of injection, chills, fatigue and feeling feverish, according to Canada.ca. The Moderna Vaccine is another vaccine which, in contrast to the Pfizer vaccine, does not need to be frozen. This makes it much more convenient to ship and distribute. Like the Pfizer vaccine, the Moderna vaccine is about 95% effective. Other vaccines advised to be purchased by the Canadian government by Canada’s COVID -19 Task Force is the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, the Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) vaccine, Novavax, and the
AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine. The AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine completed three phases of studies and testing with its effectiveness up to 90 percent. Other vaccines have not completed studies and testing, however, preliminary results from phase three of the Johnson and Johnson are expected this month. Expectations for trial study results for Novavax and the Sanofi GSK vaccine are much more approximate. According to Chief Medical Of ficer Deena Hinshaw, the first phase of vaccine administration should be completed through the first quarter of
2021, prioritizing those at the most risk depending on occupation and age. T h e t i m e a t w h i c h C O V I D -19 vaccines will be widely available to the public is unclear at this time. As of Jan 10, the County of Vermilion River has 10 active cases, the County of Minburn has 27 cases, the M.D. of Wainwright has 7 cases, the M.D. of Provost has 3 cases, the County of Two Hills has 9 active cases, the County of St. Paul has 121 active cases, the M.D. of Bonnyville has 83 active cases. There is a total of 14,116 active cases in Alberta, with 5543 cases in the Edmonton zone.

For households with children, tobogganing is a great way to get everyone active. Sailing down a snowy hill is the perfect blend of an exciting, but sometimes a scary rush of fun. Hiking back up the hill to do it all over again provides great cardio as well! Ice skating is also a great skill to learn that can make you work up a sweat while enjoying the fresh air. www.playkettering.org states that ice skating can also help with your balance and joint flexibility by synchronizing movement of the legs, and also build up abdominal and leg muscles. This activity gets your blood pumping and your heart rate up! If ice skating is not your thing, skiing is another option that will get you moving and energized! For a more relaxed activity that you
can do with children or by yourself can be hiking or a long walk. Vermilion offers beautiful walking trails through the provincial park along side the river. It is important to remember to wear good shoes to avoid falling or slipping, bundle up to keep warm, and check the weather a head of time for safety. Snowmobiling is a fun way to travel distance through the snow, or to play in when there is fresh snow. It builds a strong core and requires strength and flexibility to maneuver the machine t hroug h t h e tr ail s. T hi s i s a great activity to spend time with family and friends outdoors. Many people in the rural areas of Alberta escape to the mountains where there is deeper snow and breathtaking mountain views. Ice fishing is a great activity that teaches you patience and you learn about the types of fish in your area and how to humanely catch and release them. Before heading out onto the ice you need to have knowledge of fishing regulations for your area, and to know when the ice is safe to
be on. This ac tivit y will teach you how to weigh a line, attach a hook, baiting the hook or lure, casting your line, setting the hook, and reeling in your cast. Kenney Extends Restrictions For Two More Weeks

Premier Jason Kenney and Alberta Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw held a press conference on Jan 7. During the conference, Kenney announced that school in-person learning would resume as of Monday, January 11. “That was the plan we announced before Christmas and today I am happy to announce that we are sticking to that plan and we can confirm that classes will resume as of January 11. The decision to resume on January 11 is based on carefully considering the importance of attending school in person as well as the latest evidence of cases dropping in all schoolrelated age groups in December and this is based on advice from both our Chief Medical Officer as well as the Minister and Department of Education,” stated Premier Jason Kenney. According to Kenney schools play a key role in supporting student learning, emotional and mental health as well as overall well-being and that since the beginning of the school year 20 percent of families chose to do homeschooling while the majority of parents chose in-school learning and that for younger children learning at home can often be challenging. “For younger children learning at home can be often challenging from an academic, social and emotional perspective especially for parents who didn’t make that choice and it also often puts a disadvantage, in particular kids from families living in lower incomes that don’t have the easiest access to technology to keep their kids learning online,” said Kenney. Apparently, between September to winter break 0.4 percent of students and school staff tested positive for COVID19, and according to Kenney, they have a practical plan in place that will always put the safety of students and school staff first.
“We will make changes as necessary to ensure there is a safe learning environment during the pandemic,” stated Kenney. Ke n n ey q u i c k l y sw i tc h e d g e ar s to discuss the current public health measures in place and said that while there’s a reassuring trend and a drop in case numbers, COVID-19 does remain broadly spread across Alberta with a few local exceptions. “We got used to seeing high numbers the past couple of months, but I remember from May through to the end of September a bad day was a 2 percent positivity rate and we are now seeing a 7 percent positivity rate,” explained Kenney. Kenney further went on to explain that testing numbers dropped over the holidays as they anticipated and while we have seen the active cases drop substantially since the measures were introduced

Happy New Year from VES to you. May your 2021 be overflowing with good health, happiness and great memories. Vermilion Elementary School Hot Lunch Program has been providing warm, nutritious meals to students since 1999. Since the beginning, their goal has been to provide access to healthy meals regardless of a family’s financial circumstances. The Hot Lunch Program subsidizes meal costs for those who need it. This year more than ever, families are facing challenging times. The lunch program has also had to make some significant changes to the way they are providing lunch to students in order to meet provin-
cial COVID guidelines for both food handling and school safety. This has come at additional operating costs. They want to continue to ensure all students have access to hot, healthy lunches no matter the challenges their families are facing this year. They will be offering Gift Certificates sponsoring a VES student ’s Hot Lunch for five meals ($25), eleven meals ($50), or twenty-two meals ($100). Please consider supporting a VES family by giving the gift of a healthy lunch so they can continue to ‘Be the Best We Can Be’. If you are interested in purchasing a certificate, please contact Chantel Betz betzchantel@gmail.comto make arrangements. Charitable receipts are available for donations over $50. From January 4-8, VES students worked on at-home learning. Some
teachers sent packages home with the students in December and some teachers held virtual classes with their students during this week. We thank ever yone for their patience while working through this less than ideal situation. On January 11, we welcome students back into the VES building and we’re excited about seeing them again. On Januar y 13, we will have our first virtual assembly of 2021. Also on that day, as with every other assembly day, we will have our first 2021 dress up day. On this day, we will be dressing in one of two things. We will dress to impress or we will dress as an athlete for sports day. We are pumped to see how each person dresses up for that day. Hot lunch has been integrated back
into VES in a safe, but different way, and it seems to be going well. On both Januar y 13 and 14, hot lunch will be provided for all students who ordered. This is the first time that K-6 have been delivered on the same day, which means more delivery and pickup by the hot lunch staff. If this trial goes well, then delivering to K-6 on the same day will continue.
