On August 20, The Alan Jackson Experience returned to Vermilion. Tribute performer Aaron Halliday enter tained Vermilion locals at the Legion, performing classics from the
famous Country artist, and introduced his own original songs throughout the night. The Legion was one of Halliday’s first shows after COVID-19 wiped out his busy tour schedule for this year; apparently the busiest year of his

career as an entertainer. His schedule included a visit at the Legion in April, which was postponed to the August 20th. T h a n k f u l l y, m a ny o f H a l l i d ay ’s planned venues have scheduled for next year, but Halliday was more than
happy to be back on stage in 2020. Tables at the Legion were spaced out from each other and from the stage to allow for social distancing. Halliday’s wife, Sharon, had a merchandise table set up where people could purchase CD’s, T-shirts, and more.

The organizations Vermilion Unites For Equality and They Build Bridges banded together on August 22 to host a blanket exercise. Blanket Exercise facilitators and organizers of They Build Bridges, Kevin John and Debbie Semeniuk, have done numerous blanket exercises, but this is the first one they’ve put on in affiliation with Vermilion Unites For Equality. A Blanket Exercise is an immersive

educational experience in which participants represent Indigenous peoples and facilitators narrate the history of oppression inflicted on Indigenous people during the colonization of Canada. As the exercise continues the blankets representing Canada change to represent small, segregated First Nations reserves. can share their thoughts on the exercise and their personal experiences. “There’s a triple discrimination just to be myself,� shared Ashleigh Cardinal, a Two-Spirit Cree Anti-Racism activist. “The wrath of residential schools and colonization-all of that, is still felt,� Cardinal later added during her time in the sharing circle.
The event was originally going to be outside in the Lakeland College football field, but due to weather forecasting, was relocated to the Ag Society Butler Building. Due to the nature of the exercise, social distancing could not occur, however, participants and facilitators wore masks and gloves, and had hand sanitizer readily available.

Its apple season o n c e ag a i n. I f yo u own your own home its great to have an apple tree. Once it starts really producing apples, you will get more apples in a year in value that the price of the seedling tree. These will be apples that have not ever been sprayed with chemicals, and therefore filled with even more nutrients. You can eat them fresh, but usually a tree produces more than a family can eat right away. Fortunately, there are many things that you can do with apples. You can make apple crisps, cobblers, pies and apple tarts. You can make loads of apple sauce. With a juicer consider making fresh juice, and even apple cider or apple jack. They can be cut up and froze in freezer bags

for later use in baked goods, apple sauce or smoothies. If you have more than you could possibly use, you can always give them to family, friends and neighbours and well as the local food bank. There really is not much of a down side to an apple tree. Apples contain malic acid and tartaric acid which is known to help cleanse the liver of toxins, and pectin which also aids in the removal of toxins from our bodies. One apple supplies 30% of the daily recommend amount of fiber. Apples are shown to help regulate blood sugar, and to reduce fat in the blood. Regular intake of apples has shown to reduce both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Researchers have also found a link in the consumption of apples and the protection of the lungs, particularly from lung cancer and asthma. Apples are best eaten raw for the greatest benefit of all the nutrients.
When you are cooking apples, be sure to keep the skin on, as that is where the powerhouse of extraordinary antioxidants are to be found. Here is another benefit; eating one to three apples a day, not only keeps excess weight away, but also aids in weight loss according to researchers at Rio de Janeiro University in Brazil, Pennsylvania State University and Florida State University. Apple Cobbler Cobbler Topping 1 1/2 cups flour, all purpose is fine 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup melted butter 1 cup milk 1 or 2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla Base 4 cups chopped apples

1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon Pre heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the apples into a 8” x 8” pan. Combine the cornstarch, cinnamon and the sugar in a small bowl and then gently stir this mixture into the apples. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar and mix well. Combine the melted butter, vanilla and milk and then stir into the flour mixture. Do not over mix or the topping will be tough and hard. Lightly grease the bottom of an 8” x8” pan. Pat the batter into an 8” x8” pan and smooth out to the edges, leaving a space in the middle for steam to escape. Sprinkle the batter with the 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes, depending on your oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out.

The Vermilion Ag Society has been looking for alternative ways to support the community this year. “ There have been conversations many times about ways the Ag Society can support the community while pr o m ot in g o ur agr i c ul tur al r o ot s,” explained Ag Society Office Manager Nicole Templeton. After many deliberations, the decision was made to pursue the idea of an online market for local vendors. Thus, the Cultivate Vermilion Click and Collect Market was born. The online market allows vendors to promote and sell products on Cultivate Vermilion 3”the wide version website and items purchased from the
site are available for curbside pickup at the Ag Grounds. “The market will allow those within a 100 km radius of Vermilion who grow, make or bake the items they wish to sell a place to have their items in a collective market,” Templeton added. Via the Cultivate Vermilion Website, https://shop.vermilionag.ca/, vendors are able to view and list their items, and vendors receive notifications when their shop items have sold. The website also allows for personal interactions between vendors and customers, as it allows vendors to list contact information. and dreams of an area and its residents can be found in those minutes, so today I am looking at the Merton area and the council minutes of March 13, 1929. At the meeting, S. Byers was elected as the Reeve for the community and D.L. Bennett was chosen as deputyreeve. A group of ratepayer s also spoke to council to present a petition to show their opposition in putting in wells at new townsites to be found along the CPR line. Another delegation came in and spoke in support of those same wells for the new townsites. Council would then pass, with ever yone voting in favour, of having a resolution to put in wells at the townsites with the provision that the money be spent so that it could be recovered through taxation of the hamlets.

Three ratepayers spoke to council about damage to their proper t y because of road diversions and their request for compensation. A letter was also presented to council from the CPR advising them that the company was going to build a grade across a road allowance and council decided to take up the matter with the Board of Railway Commissioners. Other items brought up were the arrangement for a meeting with a weed inspector, dealing with applications for relief, arranging for quotations to get a wheel scraper repaired and refusing an application for a licence to operate a pool hall at Paradise Valley. T h e c oun c il woul d al s o a p p o int five wardens for the area, as well as poundkeepers, range riders and medical health officers. Bills for fumigators were received after fumigations were conducted at the Clare and Moyerton
schools. There was also a refusal to pay a hospital expense incurred by a ratepayer while they were in Minnesota. L ast ly, t here was a re quest put forward by council to establish a highway from the township line four miles south of McLaughlin, north to Blackfoot. Dear Editor: We would like to add our voices in support of Jan Scott’s and Lillian Kohn’s letters in regard to “Health Care Matters”. There is no doubt that the current UCP government intends to reduce spending on health care and move towards a model based on private, for profit, health care. Indeed in a conversation with Mr. Garth Roswsell, our local MLA he talked of “public health care privately delivered.” For reasons known only to themselves the current government has sought confrontation with health professionals. Witness Tyler Shandro’s tearing up the master agreement with the AMA last February and refusing to enter into meaningful negotiations with the
doctors. Also be aware of the semisecret conversations with investors prior to the passage of Bill 30 which would allow easier approval of private hospitals. It seems that these investors, friends of the UCP, sought assurances from the government that they would be allowed to make a profit before this obnoxious bill was even passed. Health Care Matters-Tommy Douglas, often regarded as the Greatest Canadian, devoted his life to developing a system of public, not for profit, health care. The UCP moving towards a private system dishonors his legacy and is a threat to every Albertan. Thank you Wayne and Mary Arnold Paradise Valley Alberta

Avoid sending your kids to school with food that contains common allergens such as peanuts. In fact, many schools ban these sorts of products, so make sure to find out what the rules are. Allergies. If your children have food allergies, make sure they know how to avoid the specific allergens. If necessary, they should carry an epinephrine injector and be familiar with how to use it. BTPS Back To School Guidelines

Due to COVID-19, many guidelines are to be followed in the Buffalo Trail Public School Division as the beginning of the school year is approaching. The school year at BTPS will begin in what is classified as “Scenario 1”, which entails “in-class learning with enhanced health and safety measures,” according to Alberta.ca. Due to the potential risk in-person classrooms pose, BTPS has provided staff, students, and parents with an extensive list of guidelines and precautions to ensure public health and safety for all. These precautions include hand washing, sanitizing stations, daily screenings for students and staff, mandatory masks for grades 4 -12, and more. Shields will be available for staff to use as directed by Alberta’s Chief
Medical Officer. Social distancing will be a challenge for k-12 schoolingparticularly with younger age groups. However, outdoor learning spaces, staggered break times, and student c o hor t grou ps will be est ab lis he d whenever possible. Signage will be posted throughout schools to encourage social distancing and proper hygiene. There is an extensive list of activities that require before and/or after hand-washing or sanitizing for students and staff. As well, there will be signs to direct the movement of students between classes, and teachers will be moving more frequently from one classroom to the next to limit the overall movement of students, and classrooms will not contain any unnecessary items to maximize cleanliness and facilitate social distancing. Signage will be used to indicate whether or not
a classroom has been used, which will direct custodial services that will be available throughout the day. Food services such as the Vermilion Elementary School Hot Lunch Program will still be available for students and will follow Alberta Health guidelines for restaurants. Vending machines and the like will not be available at the beginning of the school year to allow time for students to learn sanitation techniques while using such machines. Waiting outdoors is encouraged for parents at drop-off and pick-up, and parents that must enter schools will go through a screening via a BTPS self-screening app, which must be completed within the school office. Bussing will be available and the option to use busses is to be decided by parents. Students in grades 4-12 will be required to wear masks on busses.

The committee is enthusiastic, as this is the first bursary it has awarded. “ We star ted to look at ways of encouraging local med students,” Mayor Caroline McAuley explained. It’s a $20,000 bursary with an additional $5,000 awarded anually throughout Whitfield’s schooling. Whitfield is going into his second year of the University of Alberta’s M.D. and Faculty of Medicine on August 25th. He will be taking an extra year in the Enhanced Skills program with a focus on surgery or anesthesiology, and he has had the opportunity to job shadow under Vermilion’s Dr. Leibenberg over the summer.
“I’m ver y excited to be recieving a bursar y,” Whitfield said. However, rather than for the financial aspect, Whitfield is more excited about the opportunity the bursary gives him to work with the town in addressing the community’s needs. Once Whitfield completes his studies, he is offered a job in Vermilion to practice medicine. Whit field is looking for ward to returning to a smaller community. “I’m a small town boy and I always will be,” Whitfield stated, “Small towns have a lot of benefits, and I find the community is a lot more tight-knit.” Whitfield always planned on returning to the small town lifestyle sometime after completing his education, but recieving the offer from the town helped solidify his timeline. At the earliest, depending on schooling and residency opportunities, Whitfield will return to practice medicine in Vermilion in 2024.

Senior Centre News - Re-Opening
Submitted Spring and summer have come and gone extremely fast for some of us and extremely slow for others. Our gardens are ready to be harvested and the fields will soon be as well. The Senior Centre is ready to start opening September 1. It will be good to have some fun and social activities in our lives. The POOL HALL will once again be available for the men to have some challenging games on the tables. FLOOR CURLING will also be starting as per their regular schedule every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. I have
been talking to some of our members and they are excited to be back playing again. We are more than happy to welcome anyone who wishes to come and join the fun of the game and maybe meet some new people. Everyone will be expected to respect the rules and regulations set out for being safe during the COVID -19 epidemic. BINGO will also start September 3 at 1 p.m. We left off with the Jackpot at $595. in 61 numbers. We will have the tables set up for spacing, you will need to read a screening list to qualify to enter our centre, wear a
face mask, bring your own dobber, also your own beverage or snack as needed. If you do not have a face mask we will have one to purchase for a minimal charge. We would appreciate it, if you could bring as much correct change as is possible for purchasing your game cards. Family members will be able to sit together, but others must be spaced. We will not know the exact number of spaces we will have available, but it will be very close to 40+. We will work on a “first come first serve” basis until we have our tables full. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
Lakeland College Recreation Centre Now Open

Recreational Facilities at Lakeland College are now open. Dry facilities, such as the gym and weight room opened on July 27 with directional signage and social distancing measures in effect. Half of the weight room was moved into the gym to space out equipment and encourage social distancing. On August 10, the pool reopened. Locker rooms are closed for the time being, and visitors are asked to be changed prior to entering the facility. Visitors at the pool are asked to book their

Ride To Conquer Cancer: Team Vermilion

Now in its 12th year the 2020 Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation will be hosting a ‘virtual’ ride in lieu of the 2-day 200km ride originally scheduled for July but postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The ride for Team Vermilion is planned to take place locally on August 29. A team of seven riders hope to each ride 100kms on a series of loops in and around Vermilion AB. In 2019 Team Vermilion riders included Darren Bratrud, Joe Zeller, Scott Webb, Brandon Tupper, Craig Brown, and George Rogers and finished with the Top Fundraising Rider Average award. The 2020 Team Vermilion sees several returning riders including team Captain Darren Bratrud, Craig Brown, Joe Zeller and Scott Webb. New to the team will be Dean Barr, Terry Duncan and Brandon Tupper.

A Small Elvis Tribute
On August 17, Vermilion Resident Helen King performed a small tribute to Elvis Presley in her front yard to commemorate the day the King of Rock and Roll died, which was only a day before, on August 16, 1977.
King handmade her costume for the tribute over the course of two weeks. Her costume contains over 200 buttons. King has appeared as Elvis on a yearly basis at the Vermilion Valley Lodge to uplift the spirits of the residents on special occasions such as birthdays.

War Amps 2020 Key Tags En Route To Alberta Households - Alberta residents can expect to receive their 2020 War Amps key tags in the mail starting this week. Each key tag has a confidentially coded number. If you lose your keys, the finder can call the toll-free number on the back of the tag or place them in any mailbox, and The War Amps will return them to you by courier, free of charge. The War Amps receives no government grants. With the public’s support of the Key Tag Service, the Association is making a difference in the lives of amputees, including children, by providing financial assistance for the cost of artificial limbs, peer support and information on all aspects of living with amputation.
