3 Cities Fairgrounds in Paradise Valley hosted a Gymkhana event on July 28. Many participants in the gymkhana events were returning from Paradise Valley’s Horse Camp, which took place from July 14 to July 16. The gymkhana events were for all ages, divided into the groups: peewee (nine and under), youth (10-14), and intermediate (14-17). Adults were able to participate in all open events. In total, there were approximately 40 participants. “That’s a pretty sweet turnout,” said Tammy Hampel, a member of the Paradise Valley Light Horse Committee. The gymkhana activities consisted of barrel racing, pole bending, key hole, egg and spoon race, as well as some unique activities such as the tissue pairs race and the soup ladle race.
The tissue pairs race is a race in which a piece of paper is held between two participants who have to carry out various horsemanship tasks such as trotting, or loping to see how long it takes for the paper to break. The soup ladle race was a relay-style race in which participants had to take up a soup ladle of water and fill a shotglass at the other end of the arena “which is a lot harder than it sounds,” said Hampel. Melissa Wright, another Light Horse Committee member, explained how the event was not highly competitive or high intensity, and was simply an event that was easy to host while maintaining COVID-19 guidelines. “ We had a beautiful evening, and it was a great opportunity for all ages to par ticipate,” stated Wright. Firefighting Programming At Lakeland College

Firefighting program scheduling at Lakeland College has looked a little different this year. The basic firefighting program began in M arc h, and t wo weeks into the program, COVID-19 changed everything. Swiftly, the college set up an
online learning environment for fire school students, but the program was still eventually cancelled, as was the various other emergency ser vices programs Lakeland College typically runs throughout the summer. With things in the province slowly reopening, Lakeland College was able to resume emergency services programs.
On July 20, the college ran a weeklong fire ex tinguisher maintenance program, and on July 27, were able to begin their usual 12 week firefighter training program, which sets the end date of the program to October 16. This scheduling is the typical scheduling for Lakeland College’s third firefighter training program, but due to
COVID-19, was the only one the college was able to continue in consideration of governmental restrictions and regulations. Like all Lakeland College programming, the firefighter training program will follow COVID-19 guidelines with social distancing measures in effect and maskwearing requirements.

Lakeland College is returning in the fall with a blended learning experience. Due to COVID-19, the college has revised occupancy loads and have various measures in place to ensure social distancing guidelines are met. Classrooms will have fewer students with desks and work areas spaced out according to the six-foot government recommendation, with plexiglass barriers directional guides in
high traffic areas. As well, Lakeland C o lleg e will have a c am pu s -wi d e mask wearing requirement. Despite lower occupancies in physical classrooms, Lakeland College will be able to take on the same amount of students in each class as usual. Students will be on rotation between in-person classes and online streams. Labs and other immersive learning environments will be socially-distanced as well. “We’re excited to be able to work with all the guidelines and still be
able to provide the same quality of hands-on experiences that Lakeland is known for,” explained Georgina Altman, Vice President of External Relations and Infrastructure at Lakeland College. Residence at the College will be open, but occupancy will be lower, with specific kitchen schedules. Residents at Lakeland are expected to meet stricter cleaning requirements. Obituary of Leonard Anton Kenzie Leonard Anton Kenzie passed away peacefully on July 26, 2020 at the Vermilion Long Term Care Center. Leonard is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his 6 children – Marg (Dave) Miell, Bill (Lona) Kenzie, Milli (Franco) Bomben, Lois Kenzie, Rick (Juanita) Kenzie, and Eleanor Kenzie, as well as 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by Marion, his wife of 69 years, in 2018, as well as his parents, Anton & Mathilde Kenzie, brother Martin Kenzie, and sister Eleanor Esslinger. Leonard was born in Berlin, Germany on September 14, 1926, and emigrated to Canada with his parents and brother as an 18-month-old child. He grew up in frontier conditions in a log cabin north of Mannville, Alberta - walking to a one-room school, and farming and travelling with horses.

Together they raised 6 children to be honorable, productive members of society in whom were instilled strong values of hard work, integrity and honesty, which was a source of great pride to him. Leonard was very community-minded and served in various capacities including Secretary of the Cummings Lake Mutual Telephone Company, and as Councillor for the County of Minburn and County of Vermilion River. He was one of the founders and served as President of the Vermilion Livestock Co-op Auction Market, and was instrumental in the construction of the current auction facility. He was involved in the organization and successful launch of the Vermilion River Gas Co-op. He was also involved in the Stellaville Historical Society, and promoted the restoration of the St Helen’s Stellaville Anglican Church. In their retirement years, he & Marion were able to fulfil several “bucket list” dreams, including touring Eastern Canada, particularly enjoying the fall colors and people of the Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland. Leonard found great joy in his grandchildren, observing their sports and cultural activities, as well as the hours spent playing board and card games with them. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, who will always take pride in his legacy of love, service, integrity and hard work.

Impacts Of Assessment Model Changes On The County Of Vermilion River
County of Vermilion River Submitted
County of Vermilion River, Kitscoty, AB – The County of Vermilion River was notified this week of changes proposed by the Province of Alberta to reduce the property tax of oil and gas companies through changes to the assessment model for regulated properties in this sector. C o u n c i l a n d ad m i n i s t r at i o n ar e extremely concerned about the serious impacts of this decision because it will mean an increase in residential property tax, reduction of services, or combination of both to make up for this lost revenue. While the stated intention of this decision is to increase the competitiveness of oil and gas companies in this difficult economy, these changes will disproportionately benefit multinational oil and gas companies and harm smaller companies and residential ratepayers. In addition to this, there are no regulations to ensure that this money from the reduction in taxes will be spent in Alberta to improve the struggling oil and gas sector here. For these reasons there seem to be few benefits to outweigh the added costs that county residents will be faced with.
Based on the information provided to the County of Vermilion River from the Province, the impacts to the County of Vermilion River could indicate a loss of up to 9% of tax revenue, which equates to a loss of up to $3.9 million in overall lost revenue for the County of Vermilion River in the first year. To compensate for the loss of industry assessment and corresponding tax revenue, the County of Vermilion River will have to adjust operations in one or a combination of the following: · Increase the Residential Mill Rate up to 109.6% AND/OR · Increase the Non-Residential Mill Rate up to 25.9% AND/OR · Cut services by up to 45.2% If this proposed change is passed YOU WILL BE IMPACTED – financially through property taxes and in a loss of services from the County of Vermilion River. Many services provided by the County would need to be eliminated, County support of other municipalities or organizations will have to be decreased or terminated, and there would be an increase in property taxes for residents and businesses in the County. • Agricultural Services • Community and Recreation • Services • Public Works Services • Planning and Development • Services With the additional costs to the Police Funding Model, uncertain Municipal Sustainability Initiative funding, on top of historical unpaid taxes from oil and gas, ratepayers will see significant property tax increases in the coming years. The Province is proposing these changes to the oil and gas industry to reduce their property taxes and education taxes. This loss in municipal revenue has to be derived from other ratepayers (You!) – through a combination of increased taxes and decreased services. What are we doing? The County is contacting Premier Jason Kenney, Municipal Affairs Minister Kaycee Madu, Energy Minister Sonya Savage and MLA Garth Rowswell to express our concerns over these changes. The County is also supporting neighbouring municipalities and the Rural Municipalities of Alberta. What can you do? • Please let your government offi-

Muriel Hutton arrived in the Koknee District to begin teac hing on De c. 16, 1914 when the temperature was -30 Celsius and she had to travel 15 kilometres in a sleigh. The school would not open until April 1, so Hutton opened her home to students for two hours of instruction five days a

The parents were in favour of this and on the first day 10 students came to the house but soon enough there were 16 students because some of the students lived far away and it took time to get there. The school had received its name from Tom Elliott, who named it for a boat called Kokanee, which was named for Kokanee Lake. When April 1 did come along, she opened the school which was a typical one-room school that had a small house heater, a small library and all the supplies

such a school would need during those years. There were no lamps in the school so six wall bracket lamps were purchased and installed. As well, an organ was bought from the Eaton’s Company with the company paying for the freight for the school. Sadly, that organ would be lost in 1935 when a terrible fire hit the school and burned it to the ground, taking everything with it. Going back to when Hutton was teaching at the school, the first school teacher’s convention was held in November 1915,
which she stated was held in the attic of the only school in Vermilion at the time. She had to drive 17 miles by team and buggy to get to the convention in time. When the convention returned to Vermilion two years later, it was held in a much more modern community hall. Also during those years, most of the students had to ride horses to school and if the students forgot to feed their horses, or to tie them up properly, they would soon discover their horses had wandered away. A second school would be built in 1935, on the opposite side of the road, and gasoline lamps were installed in the school. According to Hutton, this new school was well-built and had large windows and an excellent heater. The school would be used until 1953. T h e d o g d ays of summer have arrived. It’s a great time to beat the heat by heading to the lake, but staying socially distanced and still being careful to follow the sanitizing health regulations. The heat and sunshine are welcome for farmers trying to get their hay off, and the ripening of the crops in the field. It is nice to see a return of familiar weather patterns where we once again have some hot weather the end of July and the beginning of August. Hopefully that means that we will be having better harvest weather this fall. This is quick and easy to cook on those hot days of summer. These pancakes are heavier and hearty than those made with white flour. The addition of oat flour gives them more nutrition than regular white flour pancakes. Oats, have a lot of

important health benefits such as inhibiting cardio vascular disease by slowing down the buildup of plaque inside the blood vessels. Oats contain a special fiber called beta-glucan, which has been proven to have the beneficial effect of removing cholesterol from the digestive track, before it can enter the blood stream. Recent research has discovered that a compound in the oats called avenanthramides, helps to protect the good LDL cholesterol from oxidation for 137 minutes after you have eaten oats. If you have some vitamin C, such as an orange or a glass of orange juice with your oat pancakes, then the protection will increase to 216 minutes. Oats help to stabilize blood sugar, which may be beneficial for people with diabetes, insulin resistant metabolic syndrome and obesity. Oats contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, as well as resistant starch which acts like fiber. I have switched to unbleached wheat
flour for all my cooking and baking, to eliminate the bleaching chemicals which can have undesirable effect on our gut microbiome. Our gut health is powerfully linked to our immune system. To make the oat flour I use 1 cup of quick cooking oats and grind it in a little food processor I have or I use my coffee grinder. For added nutrition you can add some flax seeds and grind, but you will have to add additional liquid as ground flaxseed absorbs a lot of moisture. If you can not have dairy, then using coconut milk or any other alternative is a good option. I find that when cooking the pancakes, a light spread of canola oil on the grill works very well. I like to cook these for breakfast or even as a quick supper with a few eggs and some bacon or ham. There are many ways to enjoy these pancakes. Maple syrup and butter are a favorite, but you can also have whipped cream with fruit and berries. You can top them
with peanut butter and banana for added protein and potassium, or add some cinnamon for blood sugar control. You can have dark chocolate and walnuts, jam, ice cream and freshly made rhubarb or raspberry compote and I have even heard of a rich caramel sauce made with cream, butter and brown sugar(no calories there). Oat Pancakes 1 cup of oatmeal ground into flour 1 cup unbleached flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup milk 2 eggs 1/4 cup melted butter 2 teaspoons sugar 2 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla In a food processor or coffee grinder, grind the oats into a coarse flour. In a bowl mix all the dry ingredients and then add all the other ingreients. Cook on a oiled hot grill or frypan. Makes 12
McDonald’s Official Land Purchase, Construction Postponed

At the Town Council Meeting on July 14, it was officially announced that the McDonald’s franchise purchased an acre of land from the Town of Vermilion on 42 Avenue. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the franchise had to postpone the construction of the McDonald’s, and hopes to break ground in the spring. Construction is expected to take about 16 weeks
not including time for training, which would set the opening date to approximately late summer or fall of 2021. “We are very excited to be working with McDonald’s Canada on a build for spring of 2021 in Vermilion. Once built, it’s visibility from Yellowhead Highway 16 will be an added draw to pulling increased traffic off the highways into Vermilion!” comments Mary Lee Prior, Vermilion’s Economic Development Coordinator.

Paradise Valley Horse Camp

3 Cities Fairgrounds in Paradise Valley hosted a horse day camp from July 14 to 16. The Paradise Valley Horse Camp started when older members of the Light Horse Committee passed the torch to a younger generation, who wanted to create an environment to teach horse showing, horsemanship skills, and equine maintenance. Thus, the new Light Horse Committee members organized an annual horse camp. The camp was open to ages six to 18, and had a total of 44 attendees. There were multiple instructor areas at the camp including gymkhana, horse driving, and roping. Attendees were also taught leather belt making. On the evening of July 15, the
camp held a mock rodeo. “The real highlight of the camp was that the kids put together the rodeo,” stated Light Horse Committee member Melissa Wright. The rodeo was completely organized and ran by the attendees of the camp; registration, announcing, and everything in between. The rodeo was not competitive and prizes were not given, it was “just for the experience,” explained Wright. The camp was also facilitated with the enforcement of COVID-19 guidelines. “The kids really appreciated having something to do with their horse in a safe manner,” Wright stated after discussing how COVID-19 has led to the cancellation of various larger horsemanship events, “It was a great thing to see kids six to 18 interacting and supporting one another.” she added.

“Colour has sound to it, and that sound has a healing effect,” local artist Eugene Kopeck muses. Kopeck began his artistic endeavours in grade school, but slowly distanced himself from the craft as he began pursuing a career and family life. He became a pilot and toured the Antarctic for Ray Nelson of Nelson Lumber in Lloydminster. He resided in Lloydmister for 25 years, until moving to Vermilion five years ago. “Vermilion was my lucky last choice,” Kopeck comments, “It’s a friendly atmosphere. You get to know people far easier

here than in Lloyd.” Kopeck returned to his artistic endeavours in recent years after his friends and acquaintances started to notice his artistic skill in quick little sketches and drawings, or “doodles,” as Kopeck refers to them. Kopeck began commissions after having to find a new owner for his dog Cappy, which he was unable to keep in his residence. Thankfully, Cappy’s new owner allows Kopeck to visit him occasionally. To express his gratitude, Kopeck painted a picture of Cappy for his new
owner. Kopeck has worked with various mediums, such as oil paints and pastels, and the occasional drawing or watercolour. Kopeck continued to do commissions for various community members of animals, landscapes, and portraits. Kopeck then began entering in art shows, after being encouraged to do so by Jenny Borysiuk, also known as Baba Jenny. “An honourable mention for her,” Kopeck said with a chuckle. Kopeck mentioned how unfortunate it

was that this year’s art show in Vermilion was cancelled due to COVID-19, and hopes that the annual event will continue next year. Kopeck’s commissions are open, and individuals can inquire for commissions and/or prints by emailing eugenekopeck@ gmail.com.

COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 cases in Central Alberta continue to climb. Central Alberta has identified 173 new cases from July 24-30, leaving the region at a total of 254 active cases. As of July 30, there are no longer any active cases in the County of Vermilion River, the Municipal District of Bonnyville, or the County of St. Paul. However, the Municipal District of Wainwright is now up to 11 active cases and sadly one death. Flagstaff County is up to seven active cases, there are seven active cases in Camrose and County, and 69 cases in Viking. Cases in the County of Minburn have gone down to one and cases in the County of Two Hills have gone down to two. In total, Alberta sits at a total of 1386 active cases.

And while they still come, they come further apart. You can see them coming. An anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas, or landing at O’Hare airport. You see it coming for the most part, and prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side. Soaking wet, spluttering, still hanging on to some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you’ll come out. Take it from an old guy. The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don’t really want them to. But you learn that you’ll survive them. And other waves will come, and you’ll survive them too if you’re lucky, you’ll have lots of scars from lots of loves. And lots of shipwrecks.� When you have experienced the greatest loss and storm in your life what wreckage do you have to hold on to? You are trying to find a piece of normalcy when everything has changed. Do you have someone to reach out to, a friend or support system to hold on to and float with you to shore? Do you
have an understanding of the grief process/ journey? Learn all you can about your grief. Symptoms, emotions such as guilt, blame, anger and the triggers that cause you to hang on to your wreckage tighter. Do you have some survival coping skills for self care? Nutrition, sleep, hydration, exercise and taking grief breaks. Calm your soul with music, journaling, art and find some other soul amid the wreckage to connect with, a friend, counsellor or support program. Covid 19 has caused us to not have the connection with others that we need, the assurance that we have the skills to cope with what is a head, we are left lonely and often with fear. Look around for more wreckage (support) you can reach for. Connect with others via email, FB, phone, and meet with physical distancing and be safe. May you not loose your grip on your piece of wreckage. May you find others to float with to a shore of safety, healing and a “new normal�. Vermilion River 4-H Virtual Sheep Show
Vermilion River 4-H District Executive Submitted
The Vermilion River 4-H Virtual Sheep Show was a success. There were 9 members from the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club that entered in the virtual show all together. There were 16 Sheep projects entered in confirmation classes for market lamb, ewe lamb, yearling ewe, mature ewe and flock. There were also 13 entries
in the skills classes which incluced a Judging class, Coloring contest, Wool Creation Class, and a Marketing class. Members had the opportunity to compete in “People’s Choice”, to see whose projects received the most facebook likes. This show was also a great success due to the amazing volunteers, that judged the classes. Confirmation Classes were judged by Jay Good, Erin Yaremko

Local Farm Welcoming Visitors For Alberta Open Farm Days In August

Rick, Johanna, Charlotte, Nick and Alex Wasylik, who farm northwest of Vermilion, are looking forward to being part of Alberta Open Farm Days on Saturday, August 15, 2020. It’s a natural extension of the live video tours daughter Charlotte started doing in March during calving season, just after the pandemic was declared. The tours were a way to share daily life at Chatsworth Farm with family and friends, and then grew to be a window into farm life for kids at home, seniors in nursing homes, as well as an agricultural education and awareness project. From there, it wasn’t a big step to agree to be a host for Open Farm Days, a province-wide open house for
Alberta farms, who invite their urban and rural neighbours to stop in for a visit. It’s a great way for visitors to meet the people behind the farm, see where your food comes from, enjoy a day out and reconnect with the land, and learn more about farming. Open Farm Days at Chatsworth Farm will include free tours of the family farm with most of the animals, including beef cattle, sheep and lambs, chickens, geese, ducks, and turkeys, plus farm kittens and the family’s livestock guardian dog. Guided tours will be held every hour on the hour, beginning at 11 a.m. and ending at 4 pm, featuring machinery demonstrations and also a look at the vegetable garden. After the tour, visitors are encouraged to bring lunch or a snack and a picnic blan-

ket to enjoy a picnic in the pasture, and there will also be a farm pop-up store with the family’s beef and lamb available. Charlotte, who’s in charge of marketing and social media for the family farm, said, “We’re excited to welcome visitors to our family farm and to be a part of Open Farm Days for the first time, to connect Albertans to sustainable farm fresh food. And lots of people have roots on the farm, so this gives them the chance to rediscover those connections.” Because of new Alberta Health regulations and Covid-19 precautions, registration is required with timed entries, and limited to to a maximum of 100 people at a time. Unfortunately, drop-ins aren’t allowed this year. Safety on the farm has never been more important than it is now, both for people and animals. Charlotte will be working with Crowd Design Co. to
ensure that all current health guidelines and protocols are being followed to help offer a safe and enjoyable event for all. Crowd Design’s Tegan Thompson and Charlotte worked together at Northlands on Farmfair International and Amazing Agriculture for three years and have been enjoying the chance to work on another ag event. The Wasyliks are grateful to Cornerstone Co-op, MainStreet Hardware, Vermilion Credit Union, and Webb’s Machinery for their support and assistance in making this day possible.
