Cruther’s Berry Farm Ready For Picking

Cruthers Berry Farm is ready for an abundant season this year, and the strawberries are ready for picking! The Elliotts’ added the strawberry patches after buying the farm, there is a t wo -acre spot whic h totals to approximately 5000 individual strawberry plants. The strawberry variety is an Everbearing Seascape strawberry, which means the plant is particularly resilient and grows for longer than the average strawberry and can continue growth through frost. This year strawberries are available in the following form: u-pick for $20/ basket or we-pick for $25/basket. Cruthers has three different varieties of Saskatoons, which are Northline, Smoky, and Honeywood. “The custom-
ers really like the Honeywood variety” Tim comments. Weather permitting, the Saskatoons should be ready for picking within the next week. They also have two varieties of raspberries; Boyne and Red Mammoth, and they will be ready in mid-August. Cruthers Berr y farm has enjoyed annual clientele, and the Elliotts’ would like to thank Vermilion at this time for the communit y suppor t they’ve received. Cruthers also has corn, potatoes, carrots, and cherries, which will be available later in the year. Due to COVID -19 guidelines and restrictions, individuals interested in picking berries at the farm are asked to make an appointment for picking, either via facebook or simply call at Cruther’s Saskatoon bushes. 780-853-4223.

Calling all rhubarb lovers. Here is a new rhubarb recipe to add to your collec tion, it is called Rhubarb Fool. This rhubarb recipe has deep British roots. It goes all the way back to the reign of King Charles II, somewhere in the 160 0’s. The name fool, is thought to be derived from the old French word fouler, which means to press or crush. A fool is a delicate balance between sweet and sour, creamy and tangy. Late spring and early summer is prime rhubarb season. Rhubarb is one of the fir st fr uits available on the Canadian prairies and prai-

rie cooks have come up with lots of ways to use it: there are rhubarb pies, rhubarb crisps, rhubarb jam, rhubarb relish, cobblers and cakes. While we treat rhubarb as a fruit, it is actually classed as a vegetable. Even if you do not grow rhubarb, it is now available in some grocery stores and you can usually pick it up at your local farmers market, as it is in season right now. Rhubarb is mildly laxative. Research shows that it may be beneficial for diabetes as it mimics the action of insulin, allowing the sugar to enter the cell, where it may be burned instead of circulating in the blood. Rhubarb is not a good food choice to be eaten frequently for those people that are prone to form oxalate kidney stones. Rhubarb can
be easily frozen for later use by cutting it up into 1 inch pieces, blanching it for 1 minute and then rinsing it in cool water, patting dry and packaging it in plastic freezer bags. Rhubarb is also a good source of fiber, vitamin K, and vitamin C. I always like to use the younger thinner rhubarb, as I find it is more tender and less sour than the larger stalks. Always remember that the leaves of the rhubarb plant are poisonous. Rhubarb Fool 2 1/4 cups chopped rhubarb 3 tablespoons water 1/3 cup sugar 1 1/4 cup whipping cream 2 tablespoons sugar Chop the rhubarb into slices 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Place in a heav y
Local Project To Create Jobs And Improve Core Infrastructure

July 11, 2020 Wainwright, Alberta: The Municipal District of Wainwright was awarded funding for a Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP) project to create jobs and core infrastructure in the community. A provincial grant of $291,750 was made to the MD for the replacement of an existing, dilapidated, bridge with a bridge culvert. “ We have aging infrastructure throughout Alberta and I’m happy our government is making investment into programs like STIP to address it. Not only will this resolve the issues surrounding the bridge, but it creates
jobs and investment in our communities. Thanks to Alberta’s Recovery Plan vital projects like this one are being recognized and that is a good thing.” Garth Rowswell, VermillionLloydminster-Wainwright MLA The Gover nment of Alberta is significantly increasing new investments in municipal infrastructure programs, like STIP to fi x a n d b u i l d needed roads, municipal infrastructure, and bridges in small and rural communities across Alberta. Strain the mixture with a metal strainer, separating out the liquid from the cooked rhubarb. Put both into the fridge to cool. When cooled, whip the heavy cream and the 2 tablespoons sug ar. In glasses, or glass bowls layer in first the whipped cream and then a tablespoon of the fruit. Using a skewer or chopstick, carefully swirl the rhubarb into the whipped cream, add another dollop of whipped cream, and then a teaspoon of the rhubarb, and drizzle with a teaspoon of the rhubarb juice. They can be refrigerated an hour or more before ser ving, or serve immediately. Makes 6 dreamy servings.

Great hockey players have come from all corners of Canada, and Alberta, and the area of Vermilion is no different. Many players have spent a brief time in the NHL, others spent longer periods but each left their mark on the hockey world. For the community of Myrnam, there is Rocky Ray Saganuik, who was born on Oct. 15, 1957 in the community and would play junior hockey for the Kamloops Chiefs and the Lethbridge Broncos. With the Chiefs, he would only play four games in 1975-76 before joining the Broncos, playing in six games and picking up three points. The next year with the team though, he would explode with 108 points in 72 games.

Thanks to that output, he would be drafted 42nd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1977 WHA draft and 29th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1977 NHL Draft. He would sign with the Maple Leafs and make his debut in 1977 with the Dallas Black Hawks of the CHL, the farm team for the Maple Leafs. He would record 29 points in 42 games that season and then make his way to the NHL for the 1978-79 season, picking up eight points in 16 games, and playing 61 games in the AHL, earning 76 points. He would pick up the Les Cunningham Award for being the Most Valuable Player in the AHL for that season. He would spend the next three full seasons in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs, playing in 65 to 75 games, and recording his best season in 197980 when he had 24 goals and 47 points in 75 games. in the AHL after three games with the Leafs. In his time with the St. Catherines Saints, he had 49 points in 61 games. Before the 1983-84 season, he would be traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, playing 29 games with the team and recording four points. He would play two more seasons in the AHL before retiring from the NHL due to injuries. It is at that point he will make his way to the United Kingdom to serve as a player-coach with the Ayr Bruins and the Peterborough Pirates. He will also coach the Durham Wasps, Murray field Racers and Blackburn Hawks. Later, he will come back to North America to ser ve as a coach in the WHL, and then as a youth director in Chicago. Over the course of his career in the AHL, he will have 129 points in 131 games. In Great Britain he will record 75 points in 31 games and in the NHL he had an excellent 122 points in 259 games. There is now one active case in the County of Vermilion River, three active cases in the Municipal District of Wainwright, one active case in the Municipal District of Bonnyville, four active cases in the County of Two Hills, two active cases
in the County of Minburn, three active cases in Flagstaff County, eight active cases in Camrose, and four active cases in Viking. On July 16, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported 120 new COVID-19 cases in Alberta. Alberta sits at a total of 859 active cases, with the Central Zone sitting at a total of 92 active cases.

Dance Impressions closed its doors on March 16 due to COVID-19, and was Dance Impressions by Ryan has been offering classes via zoom. Day camps holding numerous programs through the were permitted in stage one of Albersummer at varying levels of intensity and for all age groups. Dan c e Im pre s s i o n s c ur re nt ly i s running the Power Program for competitive dancers who would like to keep up with their skills and learn more throughout the summer. The Power Program occurs twice a week, and participators are sent home with challenges relating to cardio, core strength, technique, and more. The Power Program is for ages 12 and up. Dance Impressions also runs a nondance day camp for kids, which include outdoor activities, crafts, games, and snacks. If you plan to attend, you need to pre-register. Three men were sit ting together bragging about how they had set their new wives straight on their duties. The first man had married a woman from Russia and bragged that he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and house cleaning that needed done at their house. He said that it took a couple days but on the third day he came home to a clean house and the dishes were all washed and put away. T he se c o n d m an had m arr ie d a woman from Italy. He bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes, and the cooking. He told them that the first day he didn’t see any results, but the next day it was better. By the third day, his house was clean, the dishes were done, and he had a huge dinner on the table. The third man had married an Irish girl. He boasted that he told her that her duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn’t see anything, the second day he didn’t see anything, but by the third day most of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye!!! Paradise Valley Water Treatment Plant Sod Turning

After four years of coordinating funding, permits, and contracts, Paradise Valley is finally able to begin construction on a new water treatment plant, and they celebrated with a sod turning on July 13. The village has been hoping for a new water system for approximately 15 years, as its current system had its most recent update in 1965. The $2.8 million project will connect to the Alberta Central East water system getting its supply from Lloydminster. Reflections Funeral And Cremation Services To Open Soon

Reflections Funeral and Cremation Ser vices will begin to of fer funeral services on August 1, but due to renovations, will not be opening its doors until approximately September 1. Reflections owner, Candice Anderson, quickly found a passion in the funeral industr y in 2010, when she was involved in the funeral planning of two of her friends, who passed away unexpectedly in separate tragedies. Anderson’s heavy involvement in the planning of the funerals, delivering the eulogies, and organizing scholarship funds caused her to realize the
impact one can have in helping people through times of grief. “It’s such a rewarding feeling to earn a family’s trust and help them through the most difficult times in their life,” Anderson explains. A n d er s o n b e g a n h er j o ur n ey to receive proper cer tifications as an e m b a l m e r a n d f u n e r a l d ir e c to r i n December of 2010 and later became t h e m an ag er of L ake l an d Fu n er a l Home in May of 2013. When a transaction occurred, effective July 1, 2020 and the funeral home was purchased by Crossroads Funeral Home, Anderson and her sister, Bethany Jacula, lost their positions. To stay in the
funeral industry and remain dedicated to Vermilion and area, she decided to take on the fiscal responsibility of opening her own funeral home. Reflections Funeral and Cremation Services is fully staffed and fully licensed and will be located at 4902B 50th Avenue. Her staff includes some ver y familiar faces that ser ved with Anderson in her past position, which includes Bethany Jacula, Jim Storch, Michelle Feist, Bill Poliakiwski, John Lawrence, Colleen Berg, Alison Betz, Rob Pulyk, Joe Bucharski, Sherry and Gerald Martin. “I’m truly grateful for the support, kindness, and encouragement I’ve re c e i ve d fr o m t h e c o m mu n i t y, my staff, and my family,” Anderson states, “I look forward to continuing to serve

Edmonton – In the interest of public safety, Alberta RCMP are issuing the following information and warning in regard to the release of Kyle Dennis Johnny (37) on July 17, 2020, having served 10 years and 9 months for aggravated assault and robbery. Johnny, who will be residing in Saddle Lake, Alta., is described as: • Indigenous male • 180cm (5’11) • 100kg (220lbs)
•  Brown hair and brown eyes Johnny has been convicted of multiple offences including: manslaughter, assault causing bodily harm, robbery and aggravated assault. The Alberta RCMP is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation and consideration of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community of Johnny’s release. The RCMP believes that there is a risk of significant harm to the health and safety of the public.
The intent of this process is to enable members of the public to take suitable precautionary measures and not to embark on any form of vigilante action. Anyone believing that a crime has been or is about to be committed is encouraged to call police. Our brave doctors and medical staff deserve our gratitude and sincere thanks for the jobs they are doing every day. Unlike many Albertans, I am fortunate enough to have had the same doctor for almost twenty years. My doctor has taken the time to know me, my family, and my community. My doctor knows me well enough to read between my ramblings and realize when something that is just a nuisance to me, could actually be seriously wrong. My doctor listens and has always been there in my time of need. I do not want my doctor to leave our town and our province because of the disrespect and lack of appreciation shown by the elected politicians for the long hours in the emergency room and the reception area full of patients that need to see a doctor. I do not want my doctor and the other doctors in our community to sell their homes and their practices and leave. Many communities have worked hard to attract even one doctor. Numerous doctors are so overloaded that they can no longer see new patients. I believe that most doctors try to stay out of the game of politics, preferring to work with sick, injured and dying patients. I am told that it has become a struggle for our doctors to do their jobs when they are being attacked by their own employers. Those employers, by the way, are the people that were voted into place to represent and respect all Albertans and to be truthful and honest. I do believe that things can always be improved. courteous discussions to identify and solve the issues that the doctors and the politicians have, the politicians took it upon themselves to tear up the existing contract with no agreement in place. Then to make it worse they have continued to wage war with our fine doctors. It is now time for all Albertans to enter the discussions and let the politicians know that their behaviour is not acceptable! What can one voice and one person do? I ask myself that and I realize that one person in the wilderness cannot do much, but if I tell even two people and those two people tell two people, well suddenly our elected officials take notice because it is no longer a single voice but a chorus throughout the province. With COVID in mind, I did not want to organize a petition to be signed, instead I am inviting my fellow Albertans

to start a letter, email, and a telephone campaign to support our doctors. I am asking that all Albertans send a message to the Government of Alberta, the Premier, the Minister of Health and your elected MLA. The message is simple: Bring back the Alberta Medical Association Agreement that was in place until such time as a new contract has been negotiated and accepted by all. Give back the doctors’ rights to binding arbitration that other essential workers have. Provide all Albertans with the truth. Treat our doctors with respect and listen to their advice and concerns. Work together to advance health care, decrease wait times, improve seniors care, support mental health, and provide stability to our health care system. Vermilion River 4-H District Virtual Outdoor and Multi Club Project Show
Vermilion River 4-H District Executive Submitted
The Vermilion River 4-H Virtual Outdoor & Multi Club Project Show was a success. There were 12 members entered in the virtual show all together. Members that entered, came from Vermilion River 4-H Outdoors Club, Kitscoty 4-H Multi Club and Hidden Creek Multi Club. There were five Outdoor members who demonstrated Survival Project Skills such as what to pack in a survival kit, how to make a walking stick and how to make a campfire. Outdoor members also demonstrated Shooting Project skills such as silhouette shooting, long distance shooting, skeet shooting, archery and gun cleaning. Thank you to the Outdoor members Braysen Ruel, Kamdyn Maron, Liam Ruel,

Lorne Eigner and Holly Arychuk for entering Thank you to Kaylie Krys, Cathy Erickson- and running the Vermilion River 4-H Virtual videos of their projects for display. Arychuck and Tina Bogucky for organizing Outdoor and Multi Club Project Show. The multi clubs have the opportunity to offer a large variety of projects to members. At the district show, demonstrations entered were from the photography, canine and leadership projects. A few members also entered with the explore 4-H project where they learned about many 4H projects and for the district show the members chose to demonstrate a project they learned about. These projects were baking, carpentry, small engines that interested these members. Thank you to Hidden Creek Member Avigail Spurrell and Kitscoty Multi Members Thomas Bogucky, Julia Bogucky, Megan Krys, Justin Paul, Garrett Holst and Blake Holst. This show was also a great success due to the amazing leaders who worked with their members to promote their projects as well as to the family members who helped Kamdyn Maron (Vermilion Outdoors). the members with the videoing for the show.
