The last day of school for Vermilion Elementary School (VES) students was Friday, June 19. Since VES was unable to have a conventional celebration for their students, the school organized a “Cruising Into Summer” reverse parade. “It was just so nice for all of the staff to be able to see our students on their last day of online learning,” comments VES staff Janna McLaughlin, “It was a fun way to end the school year.” Participants of the reverse parade consisted of VES staff, the Vermilion RCMP Department, the Vermilion Fire Department, and members of the community exhibiting vintage cars for VES students to see. The economy has opened back up. Social distancing, hand washing, and sanitizing is still very much the rule of the day. The good news is, that what we have been doing seems to be working, and our area, as far as I know, is reporting no new cases. We can and we should leave our houses for fresh air and soaking up some sunshine and vitamin D. It is safe to go for a walk. It is safe to go to the hairdresser and a restaurant, even if it is take-out. It is safe to go shopping, as shops have all the government safety requirements in place. It’s time to get the economy moving again. That doesn’t mean turning out in droves at your local grocery store, but it does mean that non-essential locally owned businesses are open and ready to help you. It’s time to help them.

Protecting Small Businesses
In getting the economy back up and running, it needs you. There are two possible outcomes. The first is that as a community and province, we succeed in minimizing the impact on small locally owned businesses, and we get to keep them. When a community can retain their locally owned small business, they are injecting more cash into their own community. It is well documented that the dollars you spend in a locally owned business are recycled over and over again in your community. These locally owned businesses create a large percentage of jobs and more prosperity for your community. These are the business that when they are strong are donating to a multitude of community requests, for sports, hospitals, and non-profit organizations of all kinds. They are the businesses that care about their customers, and often know them by name. The community in return cares about supporting them. The businesses are retained, well cared for, and continue to
offer a rich selection of goods and services for the community, in well-tended properties and they are enjoyed by all, drawing in money from other areas to their community. The second option is that by a lack of understanding of the critical role that local small businesses play in any community, they are not supported and they are lost. This in turn causes a loss in financial support to all of the sport and non-profit organizations in a community. It also results in a loss of unique services, restaurants and shopping experiences. You become a community with foreign-owned chains, chain grocers, chain restaurants, and chain shopping. As a result, more of the profits leave the area and less cash is recycled locally, and your community continues to weaken. Jobs become more difficult to find, as collectively small local businesses were the largest employer, but now they are gone. Real estate values drop, commercial space is unrented as buildings are left vacant
year after year, waiting for vandalization, graffiti, and accumulated dust, giving your community a dirty uncared-for look. Poverty increases. People wish for the trendy little shopping and restaurant district that they used to have, and certain services but it can never get off the ground, in a community that does not whole heartily support their locally owned businesses. Just like we all have a part to play in preventing the spread of COVID by our actions, we now all have an important job to do in protecting small businesses in our communities. You can choose to support a chain or a small business right now. The loss of your 20 bucks spent will not affect the chain, but it may mean everything to your small businesses right now. As the British war slogan goes, “Keep Calm and Carry On”, we also need to consider in our war against the damage of COVID “Keep Calm and Support Small Business.” Together we can do this.

The first settlers in the area started to arrive in 1905 as Alberta was becoming a province. The first European woman in the area was apparently a Mrs. Crowe, while two other men, William Dargie and William Weeks, would settle here but sadly die in the First World War. By 1921, the district was heavily settled and it was decided that a school was needed for the children of the area who were traveling quite a distance at the time to attend school. They chose the name Clear Range to commemorate the Castel farm, where the first meeting was held. The district was officially organized in Decem-

ber of 1922 with D.A. Doull as the senior trustee. The site chosen was the exact centre of the district and the school was built in 1923 with Helen Dickson serving as the first teacher. She only had a few students and they were Harold Boyce, Herman and Victor Bystrom, Alex and Margaret Cowe, Connie Hathaway, Hilda Grahn, Jim and Maude Pierce. The Clear Range School, as was true for so many one-room schools, was a centre of community activities. Church services were held at the school, as were sports activities. As I have written about many times with schools in the area, the Christmas concerts were highlights. The children of the school also took part in sports events like baseball and track meets, and often entered their work in local school fairs. The school would continue to operate until 1952 when it was

officially closed after 30 years. At that point, students were bussed to Willowlea. The last teacher at the school would be Leila Ford, who taught there from 1951 to 1952. Most teachers stayed one to two years, but Louise MacLean would teach for three years, from 1938 to 1941, during the time when many were dealing with the effects of the Second World War. Another teacher, Mona Sherstanka, would stay at the school from 1934 to 1938, during a time when money was tight because of The Great Depression. Many students would come and go at the school, and 11 boys and two girls from the school would serve Canada in the armed forces during the Second World War. On June 29 at 2:30 p.m., I am hosting a Zoom History Conference on the Barr Colony Expedition that travelled from England to the area that would become Lloydminster. It is a fascinating story and

O n Thur sd ay, June 18 individu als gathered at the Vermilion pollinator garden to “Educate themselves and others about the racism in Vermilion and surrounding areas,” as explained by Vermilion local Brad Gallamore, organizer of the event. The event began with a brief introduction from Gallamore and Tigra-Lee Campbell, who stated; “We are here as a call to action that systemic racism is alive and well and we need to do something about it.... We are here to demand that the Government of Canada take action and dismantle the systems that keep minorities oppressed....” Many attendees including Campbell were invited to share their experience with racism and marginalization

Various other attendees shared their experiences as well as suggestions about how to cope with racism and combat racist remarks. “People need to open and see that... (racism) is everywhere,” attendee Cheyenne Brookwell urges, as she shared her experience with racism which included her mother being a part of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women registry. Brookwell and her siblings were put into the foster care system and adopted after their mother’s tragic death. “A human being cannot choose their colour,” comments Terang Bangun, who immigrated from Indonesia to Canada and expressed fascination and great concern for the multiple incidents involving racism around the world, including the murder of George Floyd.
“The fear and the reality of racism is alive in the hearts of people of colour, and this is a message that we need to learn the history of so that we’re equipped to have those discussions across our

The Vermilion River 4-H Virtual Beef Show was a success. There were 27 members entered in the virtual show all together. Members that entered, came from Marwayne Beef Club, Kitscoty Beef Club, Vermilion Beef Club, Clandonald
Multi Club, 3 Cities Beef Club. There were 49 Beef projects entered in confirmation classes for Steer, Heifer, 2-year-old cow/ calf and 3-year-old cow/calf. Members had the opportunity to compete in “People’s Choice”, to see whose animal received the most facebook likes. This show was also a great success due

Shannon Stubbs Presses For Answers From Liberal Ministers
Submitted June 17, 2020 – Two Hills, AB: Shannon Stubbs, the Member of Parliament for Lakeland and Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources called on the federal Liberals to live up to their promises and to deliver the help they promised oil and gas employers – because it is the workers and their families, contractors and communities in Lakeland that are paying the price. It has been 84 days since the Finance Minister promised emergency loans for small and medium oil and gas employers in “hours,” “certainly not weeks,” – and yet employers still cannot apply for the small employer loans through the Business Development Bank of Canada. Oil and gas representatives recommended by Ms. Stubbs, including Adam Waterman from the Lloydminster Oilfield Technical Society, testified at the House of Commons Committee on Finance on May 28th and said the large employer emergency loans program are “cost prohibitive”, “predatory” or “written by predatory lenders of last resort.” The bottom line is that programs can’t help workers if businesses can’t or won’t actually get the support. Without support for larger producers and service companies, new drilling won’t start, and workers and contractors will continue to remain out of work. Demanding significant stock options, potentially making the federal government the largest shareholder in struggling oil and gas companies, is pandemic profiteering, not emergency assistance. The most urgent need of energy employers is financial liquidity, especially in the context of limited and declining financing from other lenders and creditors, but the large employer measures are in excess of market rates – climbing to 14% interest by year five of a loan. That’s loan shark lending rates.

Partnership Brings Students Virtual Practicum Opportunity
Lakeland College Submitted
(Vermilion, Alta.) When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in-person classes and derailed many practicums, Lakeland College was pleased to share its virtual practicum simulations with Portage College students. By partnering together, Portage College’s early learning and child care (ELCC) students had the opportunity to complete practicum hours virtually and continue their education. “Our digital simulations have been a tremendous benefit to our early learning and child care students who choose our online delivery method,” says Janice Aughey, dean of Lakeland’s School of Health, Wellness and Human Services. “We were so pleased IEF BR TING S I L
to be able to share this amazing program with Portage College to ensure their early learning and child care students receive a virtual practicum experience. It’s more important now than it has ever been that we come together with our Campus Alberta partners to support our students during these difficult times.” Lakeland’s digital simulations are part of the ELCC diploma’s virtual play program practicum. Developed in 2014, they provide online students with a similar experience to what in-class students receive in the on-site play program practicum, where students take the lead by planning, preparing and implementing a child care program on campus. The virtual practicum includes simulations of
child-care spaces, allowing online students the opportunity to virtually engage in a childcare space and make decisions as if they were the director of their own child-care centre. “The simulation was uploaded with ease due to the cooperation between many people at Lakeland College,” says Patricia Flatla, coordinator of Portage College’s early learning and child care certificate and diploma program and educational assistant certificate and diploma programs. “There was coordination between deans, supervisors, instructors and IT at both colleges in order to make this partnership happen for our students.” Thirty-seven students in the Portage
College ELCC diploma program were given access to the simulation. “The simulations were very helpful,” says Sanaa Assaf, a Portage College ELCC Diploma student. “They helped us learn to welcome and encourage the children, which will help make them feel safe and in a caring environment. They also demonstrated the importance of caregivers working as a team. I learned many things from these scenarios on how to be a professional caregiver.” Sharing the virtual simulations is just one way Lakeland and the other Campus Alberta partners have worked together to support students to adapt to the changes to course delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘Social Distancing Style’ Charity Golf Tournament

Funds raised will benefit Organ Transplant Patients June 16, 2020 S t u r g e o n C o u n t y, A B:  T h e 2 n d Chance Trail Ride Society will hold its annual Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at Fort in View Golf course. However, this year, guests will golf ‘social distancing style.’ Social distancing style golf includes staggered tee times starting at 11 a.m, individual power carts, online registration, golf passports and an outdoor award ceremony.
At this time, a maximum of 104 golfers can register and the event is anticipated to sell out fast. In an effort to practice social distancing, golf registration and sponsorship opportunities can be purchased at 2nd c tr.c om. Golf passpor ts are encouraged and available for purchase online. The passports include tickets for mulligans, putting contests and prize draws.  The 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society operates on donations and aims to continue to raise funds to meet financial obligations to maintain the six furnished apar tments together with
GoodHearts Foundation. The apartments provide temporary lodging for transplant patients and their families so they can live as comfor tably as possible during the recovery process. The 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society suppor ts approximately 40 patients per year with lodging and additional medical related expenses. A b o u t 2 n d C h a n c e Tr a i l R i d e Society El k Po i n t r e s i d e n t a n d d o u b l e lung transplant recipient Morris Irvine helped create the 2nd Chance Trail Society, a registered non-profit organization whose mission is to increase
org an d onation awarenes s and to provide support for patients and families affected by organ donation and transplantation. Af ter M orr is re c overe d from his transplant, in 2011, he felt called to find a way to give back to people going through the organ transplant process. He met with other like-minded gentlemen and with the help of family and friends, they established the annual trail ride and years later, the annual golf tournament. Mr. Morris Irvine is the 2019 recipient of the Logan Boulet Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Is Canada Barrelling Headfirst Towards A Full-Blown Unity Crisis? Submitted Right now, if you asked many Canadians (especially our brothers and sisters in the West) such a question
would be purely rhetorical in nature. When Canadians returned to the polls on October 21, 2019, they gave Prime M ini ster Ju st in Tr u d eau a se c o n d

mandate, albeit under the authority of a minority government. Even more stunning was the fact that the almost deceased Bloc Quebecois was unexpectedly resurrected from the graveyard of Canadian politics along with an alienation movement that is spreading across Western Canada like a prairie fire. Has Canada ever truly been a united countr y? While to the world (and even to most Canadians), the Great White North is a shining symbol of peace, democracy, and prosperity, the relationship between Ottawa and the provinces has been continually up and down since the country’s founding. Being that Canada is a constitutional monarchy, centralization of power has always and will largely be the order of the day. In the opinion of many historians and writers, Confederation was the product of a group of elites in urban Ontario and Quebec (at the time Upper and Lower Canada) who graciously invited everyone else to join their newfangled country. For a relationship to truly work effectively, all parties must have an equal say, or

While such proposals will most likely never see the light of day, Ottawa cannot ignore the reality that with the rise of the Bloc Quebecois combined with the emergi n g Wex i t m ove m e n t (i n s p i r e d by Brexit), a complicated unity crisis may be just around the corner. If you’re like me, you probably don’t expect Canada to break apart any time soon. That being said, uniting Canadians from coast to coast to coast must become a priority. Is wresting more power away from the ‘Laurentian Elites’ to the provinces with regards to legislation and control over natural resources a winning proposition? Only those opposed to fixing the unity crisis would object. Other measures should include busting down all interprovincial trade barriers and instituting electoral reform. Chris McGarry
