Marwayne Jubilee School Graduation Parade

On May 29, Marwayne Jubilee School (MJS) graduates gathered for a parade in their honour, which was lead by a decorated school bus. The parade consisted of over 50 vehicles, many of which were decorated. The bus led the parade around the village honouring the 20 Grads as it passed. “We were also honoured to have our Buffalo Trail School Board Chair Lanie Parr, Mayor Cher Eikland, the Fire and Rescue Department, as well as many families and friends that came from as far away as Edmonton to join us in our celebration!,” acknowledges Marty Person, assistant principal at MJS.

Senior’s Week. It is so nice to see the province slowly opening back up. So far the numbers are looking better, but we still must all be careful, working together to put this COVID virus behind us. I will be so glad when there is nothing left of COVID, but the stories. One thing for sure is that most of us have been doing more home cooking. I came up with this, by looking to see what I had in the freezer and pantry to cook up for supper. I have served it mostly with rice, but I can’t wait to tr y it with noodles as well. I think you could also serve it with fries
May 26, 2020 Minister Shandro: Why is the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) using patients and the health of entire communities as pawns in a chess match that should never be occurring during a public health emergency? I have been pondering this question and several others for weeks, but to be honest, I don’t have answers. There is no doubt that our publicly funded health system is not sustainable. Everyone knows this. This global pandemic required our health care professionals to become superheroes to combat the virus. Up to a quarter of my patients are newly unemployed because of this pandemic. My patients don’t deserve to see their superheroes fighting the government to get more money. The public may not be aware of this, but in medicine, similar to other industries in Alberta, there are health services that the larger centers along the Highway 2 corridor (QE2) get and then there is the Rest of Alberta (ROA). I was born and raised in the ROA and lived first in Camrose and now in Drumheller. I am pissed off that suddenly my patients and their access to quality care is being questioned for benefits outside of the ROA. Apparently, the stress on the health system due to the global pandemic crisis, coupled with the eroding economic instability that it is causing, weren’t enough for the

and grated cheese as a poutine. It is one of my new favorites when I want something that is easy to make without a lot of fuss. Here is another quick and easy meal to make with a package of hamburger. It i s h a m b ur g er w i t h a m u s hr o o m flavoured gravy. The hamburger can b e b e ef, p or k , m o o s e, c h i c ke n or turkey. Each meat will add its own unique flavour. This is a dish that can be accompanied with rice or mashed potatoes or even noodles. Add your favourite vegetable for a delicious and easy home cooked meal. Another way of serving it could be with buns, sloppy joe style and a fresh salad. It is really a very versatile main dish. If you prefer to used fresh mushroom, slice

doctors and government to play nicely in the sandbox. The AMA is spending a ton of time and resources, blaming the government for everything, without taking any responsibility whatsoever. Natta. Nothing. Zero. Why am I asked on an almost daily basis to allow my name to be used in carbon copied letters chastising government, not about anything related to COVID-19, but about the fact that I should be paid more? I wasn’t at the negotiating table, and I don’t know the details of what occurred, but I’m sure there are likely many reasons why the AMA couldn’t reach an agreement with government, with faults on both sides. Rather than acknowledge their missteps, the AMA has spent an exorbitant amount of resources – including my physician dues - on a political campaign attacking the government, without explaining where they themselves went wrong, what they exactly offered, and how they expected to fit within Alberta’s economic reality. I am a proud Albertan, proud to be a rural physician and I love the work that I do. I was told by the medical establishment, I had to either get out of town, or stick with the status quo that since 1976 lacked continuity, lacked access, and was bereft of ideas that could vault rural medical care past the confines of the 1960s. I proved in 2017 that I would never abandon my patients, or use them as pawns. As a physician, I

them and add them in to salute when you add the onion and garlic. You may need to add a little more water at the end, perhaps another 1/4 of a cup. This is home cooking that is easy on the budget, and tastes amazing. I add a little chopped red pepper for color and flavour when I am serving it with rice. If you are serving it with noodles, you may want to stir in 1 cup of grated cheddar or mozzarella cheese. Supper yummy. On Oct. 3, 1907, a meeting was held among the ratepayers of the area on the decision to form a new school district. They would approve this decision, electing I.N. Harmon as the chairman and George Scholfield the secretary. Notices for a contract worth $1,000 to build the school were posted, paid for by taxes collected the previous year. This allowed for the smaller amount to build the school. The school would be named Campbell Lake, since Campbell Lake was located nearby. As for Campbell Lake, that is likely named for the Campbell family who lived in the Bowtell area around that same time. Surveyors had called it Somerset Lake for the local Somerset family, but George

Powell, the first rancher in the area, named it Campbell for his close friend, of the Campbell family. Eventually, the lake would be just known as Campbell Lake, even though some maps printed Somerset Lake and some printed Campbell Lake. The new school district would host its first meeting on Jan. 15, 1908 and elect three board members, the two already mentioned and A. Gooderich. In September of that year, the foundation for the school was put down by Charles Mayers, with the school being built by Guptil and Moe. The school was finished supposed to be finished on Oct. 1, but it would take until Oct. 5 to finish, costing $844.94 in total. Maude Stevenson would be the first teacher at the school, teaching eight students on her first day. At the time, she was paid $60 a month, roughly $1,357 today.
As with so many other rural schools, it was also the centre of the community. Dances, quilting bees, box socials and the always beloved Christmas concert. A library was also in the school, used by many in the area through the years. In 1948, the original school was turned into a home for the teachers and the Herbert School was moved to the area and would become the new school. The school, both of them, would serve the community from prom 1908 to 1955 when it was finally closed and students were sent to Vermilion from that point on. The teacherage, or original school, was moved to the Peter Dutchak farm, while the school was sold to N. Dutchak and moved to his farm. I am hosting a Zoom History Conference on the Barr Colony Expedition that would become the City of Lloydminster. It was a poorly-led and planned expedition that only succeeded thanks to the determination

To the Editor: Reply to Bernie Huedepohl’s Letter to the Editor (May 26, 2020) in response to Gun Control is Folly, Plain and Simple (May 19, 2020) The Vermilion Voice. Mr. Huedepohl states that poaching, murders, robberies are not being committed by the gun on their own. I agree. All of these acts are criminal and as such are not being committed by law-abiding gun owners. They are being committed by criminals and criminals will use whatever means at their disposal; the presence or absence of guns is not a determination of their actions. He states AR15’s are useless as hunting rifles yet Indigenous citizens are allowed to keep theirs ‘because they are used for
hunting.’ This is a mixed message about the danger of these guns because again, the danger is not in the gun but the user. Mr. Heudepohl and our government states that the guns will not be put on the prohibited list if they are ‘legitimate hunting or target guns.’ Your friend or neighbor that is a gun owner, can tell you that the ever-growing list of prohibited weapons changed by order in council without democratic process - includes many bewildering restrictions of hunting and target firearms. Guns are used for hunting and target shooting sports; their other use is for criminal purposes and this use is illegal. The media refrains from pointing out that A.R. stands for ArmaLite Rifle – ArmaLite is the company that designed them. This gives rise to the false impression that the

4-H is not cancelled, it just looks different. Covid 19 has been the cause of the new look to 4-H this year. Many Achievement days, as well as Livestock shows and sales have been happening virtually. Brand new this year is the Vermilion River 4-H District Virtual Shows. Over the summer there will be the Beef Show, Canine Show, Life Skills Show, Sheep Show and Horse Show. Members will enter the shows online, send in photos of their projects and where needed, videos will also be sent in to be judged. These shows and their dates can be found on the facebook page: Vermilion River 4-H District Virtual Show These Vir tual shows are open to all 4 - H members registered in clubs within the Vermilion River 4-H District. There are 11 clubs in this district. Clubs from Vermilion include the Vermilion River Outdoors 4-H Club, Vermilion 4H Sheep Club, Vermilion 4-H Light Horse Club, and Vermilion 4-H Beef Club. Every year, UFA organizes Farmer’s Day celebrations in June as a way to thank farmers for all they provide. Farmer’s Day dates back to 1951. At this time, Farmer’s Day was a statutory
holiday where schools were closed for the day and events were held to honour farmers in the communit y. Despite Farmer’s Day no longer being recognized as a statutory holiday, UFA has held Farmer’s Day events to carry on the tradition. Unfor tunately, due to

COVID-19, Vermilion UFA will not be holding any events for Farmer’s Day. However, Farmer’s Day lives on as UFA invites individuals aged 17 and under to demonstrate how they might thank a farmer by designing UFA’s 2021 calendar cover, posting it to instagram,
twitter, or facebook with the hashtag, #UFAFarmersDay. As for our local community, despite the cancellation of the Farmer’s Day Celebrations, The Voice would like to acknowledge and thank farmers for all their hard work and provision.

COVID-19 Testing Available For All Albertans
AHS Submitted
RED DEER – All Albertans are now eligible for COVID-19 testing, whether experiencing symptoms, or not. Offered by appointment and free-ofcharge at six AHS assessment centre locations around the Central Zone, testing is easily booked online by visiting www.ahs.ca /covid. If internet is not available to you, you can instead call 811, and 811 staff will book a test appointment for you. Testing, which is done via a swab of the throat, will tell you whether you
had COVID-19 at the time your swab is taken, even if you were not showing symptoms at that time. Testing will not tell you whether you have previously had COVID-19. It will also not tell you whether you have any immunity to COVID-19. Results will be provided to all Albertans, by phone, within a few days of the swabbing appointment. Regardless of your test results, it is important to continue to follow the public health measures and recommendations in place, to reduce spread of COVID-19. Anyone who tests positive for COVID-
19 is legally required to self-isolate. The isolation period is for 10 days from the start of symptoms, or until symptoms resolve, whichever takes longer. If you do not have symptoms but do test positive, you must still self-isolate for 10 days from day of test. If you develop symptoms within that 10 days, you must self-isolate until symptoms disappear or for 10 days from symptom onset, whichever is longer. For details on legally required self-isolation, visit: https:// www.alberta.ca/isolation.aspx Expanded testing is an important part of the effort to contain COVID-
19 in Alberta. The testing will provide a clearer picture of how well Alberta’s public health measures are working to contain COVID-19. Newborn Fawn Found And Nursed To Health

O n J u n e 1, Ve r m i l i o n i t e R u s s Cameron came across a fawn on a drive down a dirt road. He guessed that the fawn was dead as it was lying down on the road immobile, but upon further inspection, he discovered that the fawn was alive, yet unable to move. “There was just so much life in his eye s ,” C a m e r o n s t ate s . C a m e r o n explains that he called Brian Chrisp, a cat tleman who lives near where C a m e r o n f o u n d t h e f aw n . C h r i s p observed that the fawn was a newborn and that without help, it wouldn’t survive more than two hours. It was Chrisp who helped Cameron decide what to do with the fawn, and together they agreed to take it to the Vermilion Vet Clinic. Cameron emphasized the willing-

ness of Vet Clinic employee Sam Willis to take the fawn into the clinic. “They set everything aside for this little deer,” Cameron states. The Clinic reportedly fed the fawn and kept him for the day while waiting to hear back from a Wildlife Rescue about the best course of action. After receiving direction from the rescue, Dr. Brandi Suva from the Vet Clinic returned the fawn to the approximate area in which Cameron found it, where a doe seemed to be waiting in a nearby field. The next morning, Vet Clinic staff checked on the fawn, which was no longer where they had left him. It is presumed to be reunited with its mother. “ I t wa s o n e o f t h e m o s t t o u c h ing moments of my life,” Cameron commented. “I couldn’t have done it without the Vermilion Vet Clinic... Lakeland College Seeks Support For Student Relief Fund

COVID-19 dramatically changed the post-secondary landscape. Students are in dire need of financial support to help them to start or continue their education. Sixty-seven per cent of students are concerned about having no job prospects in the immediate future and 51 per cent believe they’ll have difficulty paying for tuition in the fall and keeping up with other bills and payments, a c c o r d i n g to a S t at i s t i c s C a n ad a Survey.
Lakeland College is committed to supporting its students whose finances are hindered by the pandemic through a student relief fund. To help build the fund for bursary support, Lakeland is participating in the Great Canadian Giving Challenge. “Through the Great Canadian Giving Challenge, Lakeland keeps students and their educational goals in focus and continues its mission to inspire lifelong learning and leadership through experience, excellence and innovation. This fund will relieve some of the financial burden students face from limited
summer employment opportunities,” says Stacey Ruller, development officer, External Relations. During the month of June, donations made to Lakeland’s student relief fund have the potential to help even more students wipe out financial uncertainty thanks to the Great Canadian Giving Challenge. The Rhapsody Physician Award recognizes the contributions of rural physicians, especially those unsung heroes, who provide Alberta rural communities with outstanding patient care, and who make notable contributions to both medical practice and their communities. Dr. Brilz was selected based on the extent of both of her medical and community contributions, as well as the numerous testimonials received reflecting her dedication to her patients, her
health-care team, and to the broader community. “ I t i s c l ew fr o m t h e l e t te r s t h at accompanied the nomination for this award that Dr. Brilz is—to quote one community member—’an amazing and integral part of the rural community,’ says Bernard C. Many property crimes are crimes of opportunity, and by having a #9PMRoutine, Albertans can help protect their property from theft. The 9 pm Routine movement began in Pasco County, Florida and is used by police forces across the world. It is a nightly reminder for people to make sure their homes, vehicles and property are locked up and secured for the night. Alberta RCMP will be posting on Twitter and Facebook every night for the month
of June to remind residents to lock up and put away valuables. Albertans are encouraged to check-in by using #9PMRoutine when they are done locking up. Checking-in on social media doesn’t have to stop after June, citizens are encouraged to continue to check-in on a nightly basis so they don’t forget! We will also be sending a special shoutout mid-way through the month for a Twitter follower who has been checking in with us during her 9 pm routine for a year! Days are getting longer, so even if people have a 10 pm or 11 pm routine,

The Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club had to do things a little differently this year with COVID-19 restrictions in place. We had our annual sale for the first time online in a timed auction. This year brought 12 steers to the sale ring opening up bidding in the afternoon on the 27 of May and
closing later in the evening the same day. The members videoed and pictured their projects, for the online sale as well as to show their accomplishments for the year on all their projects. The sale was a great success! The highest price bringing $3.30/ lb with an average of $2.84/lb. Typically our sale day would also showcase the animals in a show, with both

Young Amputee Warns Of Lawn Mower Dangers

At the age of 2, Adam Kingsmill lost his right leg below the knee when he ran into the path of a riding lawn mower in his backyard. He was enrolled in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program after his accident, and now at 20 years old, uses his experience to pass on an essential and possibly life-saving lesson to other children – PLAYSAFE!
