The Vermilion Rotary Club has begun their 4th Annual Flag Project. Kicking off the season, previous flag subscribers will receive a flag from May 8 - 10 to thank them for their support last year and help celebrate Mother’s Day weekend. “The primary reason we are running this project is because we want to

spread some cheer around town. People want normalcy, and we are happy to be able to still offer the program,” said project chair, Erwin Warkentin. To ensure everyone’s safety, Rotarians will take extra precautions by creating smaller teams and using more vehicles to deliver. Deliveries can only be made within town limits and to immediate surrounding areas. The Flag Project allows the Rotary Club to continue help-

ing to support many projects throughout the year including: college and school awards, swim club, food bank, peewee hockey, Santa Anonymous, junior curling, school breakfast and lunch programs, minor ball, music festival, and providing AEDs, etc. Orders can be placed online at http://prairierealty.ca/rotary.html or by calling your local Rotarian or Erwin Warkentin at 780-214-8324. Kathy‘s Greenhouse – Now Open

Kathy’s Greenhouse opened for the season on April 27, and will be open seven days per week until the end of June. Owner, Jason Andersen, has been looking after things for the past 10 years when he took it over from his mom (Kathy), and the greenhouse has been in business for the past 35 years. They offer a large variety of bedding plants, vegetable transplants, and a gift store. They will soon have seeds and seed potatoes available and offer custom pot planting; trees, shrubs, and perennials. They feature some pieces locally finished by Strippin & Flippin Furniture in Kitscoty. This fall, Kathy’s Greenhouse will still be offering strawberries and pickling cucumbers. New this year will be a u-pick section for their strawberries as well as u-pick peas.

“It’s been a really challenging year. We’ve done an incredible amount with very few people. To keep everyone safer, all of our staff and their families have taken precautions to stay isolated and safe together. With everything going on we have curbside pickup, and will have online shopping available. Keeping social distancing, it’s fantastic that we can have people come in themselves because it is a visual industry. Deliveries can even be arranged on some orders,” said Andersen. Located between Marwayne and Kitscoty, clients come from near and far including Cold Lake; Bonnyville; Wainwright; Hardisty; Mackin, Saskatchewan; and Edmonton. “The community around here is pretty stellar!” concluded Coreena Sutherland. Lawns Gardens Landscapes in Vermilion is open for the season, and celebrated 30 years of business on May 1! According to Jim Williams, they were established in the spring of 1990 when they entered into business offering supplies, services and landscape design, installation and consulting along with their garden center. “At that time, with two young boys, Bonnie operated the shop down in the airport subdivision. The following year we moved to what is now the Boston Pizza area that at the time was property of Vermilion Manufacturing & Machine Ltd. At that point we also began to have a few lawn equipment rentals and moved into higher end Lawn specific fertilizers and expanding with a larger supply of trees and shrubs along with a small green house! We slowly grew as did our boys and they became larger and larger participants within our small local business. In 1996 we purchased the sight we are in now. Summer found us expanding and adding property maintenance; taking on government projects of both the Provincial Building; Weigh Scales, Fish and Wildlife yard; as well as the trails, grounds and campsites of Vermilion Provincial Park. We held that contract five years until it was handed over to large corporate companies. We held the remaining government contracts until approximately five years ago when Cumac Construction and Landscape purchased our equipment and took over most of the existing contracts,” said Williams. He went on to say that over the years they had built a strong group of helpers and developed a name for competent and professional products and installation, going on to design and install several playgrounds in the zone along with a number of nursing homes and hospitals including the complete landscape and design of the Vermilion Health Care Centre. He added that all this time, Bonnie had been building up their store and supplying some of the highest quality trees, shrubs and perennials for the area causing them to expand to a second greenhouse!

“Our store now houses some of the most unique and unusual artworks and materials for home and commercial gardeners, along with all your gardening needs! Our growers are some of the highest regarded growers in Alberta, one of whom has continued to be noted as one of Alberta’s Elite growers and has held the title of Alberta Grower of the Year! She continues to produce incredible, high quality products at the commercial greenhouse sight. Our trees are all Canadian grown from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and eastern British Columbia. The long and hard searches for the best products we could and still do supply has taken Bonnie years to hone and sort out, to ensure our customers are provided with products suitable for family, friends and our great customers as well as the harsh growing conditions of our area. Bonnie’s job is never done! In 2017, I semi-retired but continue to help out Bonnie when I’m called, and as my side of the operation was sold off I thought I would begin to relax - well that’s partly true!” said Williams. From 1989 – 2000, Williams was also employed as the Grounds Property Manager for multiple campus locations of Lakeland College. During the winter months of 1996-1998 Williams returned to Olds College to update and upgrade his horticultural and arboricultural knowledge. He also spent 13 years as a provincial and national judge for Communities in Bloom. “One of the greatest rewards of all has been to see the staff we have had with us, working their fingers to the bone to help us with our dream! The names I will not mention - they all know who they are, and every last one of them brought a special addition to our group and each had their way to contribute to our success as a whole! Thanks to them all, to our community of Vermilion and surrounding districts for all of the support over the years, and of course to our family. Moving any building is no easy task. Today or a century a g o, i t w a s a l o t of work no matter what size of building you are moving. At the turn of the last century, moving a building involved a lot of people, a lot of horses or tractors, and a lot of time. It was in 1910 that Waverly School was built in the centre of the district at the time. As it turned out, that school would be too far north over time and in 1917 with the Oxville School District forming, it was decided that the best course of action was to move the school to a more central location within the district. Meetings were called and it was decided that the school would be moved and a Mr. Parker would come out to inspect the

school and the site and ensure it met the approval of the government. The suggested site was at the Hodge place, while the Tamils property was used as a backup. Parker, the school inspector, said both locations would be okay with him. He then went to a blackboard and using math and algebra, determined that the exact centre of the district was actually on the land of a Mr. Nickle. On the spot that proved to be the exact centre, a granary was sitting and with no road going to that spot, a spot nearby was chosen for the new school. A meeting was held to discuss the best way to move the school and L. Shaw, one of the trustees, immediately resigned stating that the school was being moved to hell and gone out of the country just as his children were ready for school. The two remaining men decided to move the school and use C. Fisher of

Edgerton to get it done. He agreed to do it for $100, which would be about $2,000 today and the school board would have to provide the tractor power. By this point it was 1921 and two tractors were found from R. Fox and a Mr. McClure. Unfortunately, McClure could not get his tractor going on the day of the move so it was moved to the next morning. As it turned out, a nest had been built by a bird inside the tractor, which had kept it from starting. The next day the school move was begun and the school was pulled off its foundation and down the slope. As the school was being moved through, the hitching contraption on the McClure trac tor broke and with it

being 6 p.m., the men decided to call it a day. New tractors were brought out the next day and now three tractors, in a line, were pulling the school. Eventually, the school was moved to the new site, where it would sit for many years to come. What Type Of Fruit Should You Grow? Fruit-bearing trees, shrubs and plants are easy to grow and can add visual interest to your yard with their vibrant foliage and flowers. Here’s what to plant based on various preferences. If you want a harvest this summer To enjoy your fruit within a few months, opt for fastgrowing plants. A few examples include strawberries, raspberries, ground cherries, cantaloupes and watermelons. If you want long-lasting producers If you’re willing to be patient, plant a perennial tree or shrub that has a long life but only bears fruit after a few years. Apricot trees and blackberry bushes take about two years to produce fruit. For blueberries, pears and apples, you’ll need to wait three years. Plum trees take six years. If you want unique but delicious berries If you want to plant fruit that’s a little out of the ordinary, try black currants, Arctic kiwis or Saskatoon berries. These berries are great for making mouth-watering jams. Keep in mind that some trees and shrubs only bear fruit if there’s a second plant nearby to pollinate it. Justin Payne and Krista Farkash had originally planned to say their I Do’s on July 18, but due to COVID-19 the nuptials jumped ahead to April 26. “We were afraid with this whole COVID-19 situation the government

would place a complete restriction on gatherings so we decided to move it ahead. The small wedding which included the happy couple, their parents and the justice of the peace was held at Red Feather Ridge which Justin said was an “Amazing place.”

Once the ceremony was concluded the newly married couple took part in a traditional wedding drive-by except instead of driving in a decorated car Justin had decorated his work semi in shiny streamers, pompoms and other assorted decorations. “It was so windy by the time we did

the drive by and had photos taken a lot of the decorations had been blown off, but it was still fun as we had several cars in the drive with us,” said Justin. He also went on to say that he hoped it provided a smile and some cheer to Vermilion during these hard times.

In light of the ‘stay home - stay safe’ c ampaign the transfer station has experienced heavy traffic flow as of late. We are still open regular hours 9 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. Monday - Saturday. Following are just a few reminders on the sor ting and preparation of your waste to make your trip easier. YARD WASTE - Leaves and grass must be taken out of the bags before being placed in the burn pit. Bags can be disposed of in regular household waste RECYCLING - We are not doing recycling of paper, boxboard, plastics and tin cans until further notice. The Vermilion transfer site will be accepting corrugated cardboard from both the Town of Vermilion and the county ratepayers while the Covid19 warnings and cautions are in place. The cardboard must be flattened and placed in the slot on the cardboard bin. The cardboard must be corrugated only, so no box=board, cereal boxes, etc. It must be clean cardboard and free of debris. LARGE ITEMS - Large items such as fibreglass tub, shower, hot tubs and such must be cut in pieces no larger than 2 feet X 4 feet. As well vinyl siding, plastic pipe and hoses must be cut in 4-foot length

ELECTRONIC RECYCLING - The current Alber ta Recycling program for electronic recycling only includes televisions and computers as well as computer components (monitors, printers, scanners). The program doesn’t include phones, satellite receivers, VCR, stereos, video games and such they are regular household waste. PAINT & HAZARDOUS WASTE - We have paint recycling on site to include paint, varnish, stains, paint thinner and stripper as well as aerosol paint cans.

Other hazardous waste is accepted as well (glue, cleaners, insecticides, rechargeable batteries etc.) USED OIL - We have a location on site to recycling used motor oil, filters, jugs and pails as well as automotive batteries. MIXED WASTE - In the event that you have metal or wood frame chairs with cushion the cushions need to be removed when possible this goes for anything that can be taken apart to separate into different waste.

The brain is affected in a positive healing way by doing this activity. May you see each new day as the first day of the rest of your lives. The challenge is how will you spend it? We still have choices even when we are faced with â€œNew Normalsâ€?. Make them good choices. Canadian Forces Snowbirds Launch Cross-Canada Tour

April 29, - The Canadian Forces Snowbirds will cross the country to salute Canadians doing their part to fight the spread of COVID-19. This unique mission is being aptly dubbed Operation INSPIRATION. “We’ve been asked to do what we do best… inspire Canadians. Through Operation INSPIRATION, we not only want to salute the front-line health care workers, first responders, and essential workers, but also all Canadians doing their part to stop the spread of COVID-19. We want Canadians to know we’re in this with you,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Mike French, Commanding Officer of the Canadian

Forces Snowbirds. The team’s signature nine-jet formation, with trailing white smoke, will fly over cities across the country starting in Nova Scotia this weekend and working west throughout the week. The team will release anticipated locations, routes, and times on their social media platforms each day. Flyovers will occur at an elevation no lower than 500 feet above all obstacles. “Every year, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds travel the country putting smiles on the faces of Canadians. While Canadians may not be able to gather at air shows for now, we’re honoured to bring the Snowbirds team to Canadians and to pay special tribute to them,” said

Virtual Trail Ride To Benefit Organ Transplant Patient’s Families

Submitted With regular events in limbo, the 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society is determined to celebrate their annual Trail Ride fundraiser with its first ever Virtual Trail Ride on May 9, 2020 at 11 a.m. The annual Trail Ride is hosted every year on the second Saturday in May and attended by nearly 500 people; unfortunately, the event was cancelled this year due to Covid related event restrictions. With the recent announcement prohibiting summer events, their 2nd annual Golf Tournament planned for August

15, 2020, hangs in the balance as well. Members of the 2nd Chance Trail Ride Society put on their thinking caps to develop a creative way to continue their work in raising funds and spreading the message about organ and tissue donation. “ We’ve created a virtual ride that complements our traditional event which began in 2012, to raise critical dollars that help transplant patients and their families.” said Morris Irvine, Founder and 2019 recipient of the Boulet Humanitarian of the Year Award. “We still need to

raise these funds, and we’re hoping you’ll ride along at home with us.” said Irvine. Statement On Federal Firearms Ban

Submitted Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Doug Schweitzer issued the following statement: “ T h e G ove r n m e n t of A l b e r t a i s concerned about all crime, including the illegal use of firearms. Today’s order by Ottawa does little to target criminals. Instead, Ottawa is singling out law-abiding Canadians who purchased their property legally, have owned these items safely for years, and who have committed no

crimes,” stated Alberta Premier Jason Kenney. “We know that the overwhelming majority of firearms used criminally in Canada are smuggled in illegally from the United States. Instead of addressing this, Ottawa will instead spend vast sums of money to criminalize law-abiding Canadians. That money would be far better used to pursue the smugglers and drug gangs that plague our society,” added Kenney. “We also know that violent criminals who use guns are often released with surpris-

ingly soft sentences. Rather than focus on law-abiding Canadians, we’d call on Parliament to bring back tough, mandatory sentences for the criminals who flagrantly endanger Canadians with their use of illegal guns,” implored Alberta Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer. In November 2019, the Alberta legislature unanimously passed Government Motion 41, which stated: “Be it resolved that the Legislative Assembly recognize and support the ability of Albertans to lawfully and in a respon-
