Vermilion Fire Truck Pulls

The 1st Annual Vermilion Fire Truck Pulls were held on 49th Avenue in support of Muscular Dystrophy on September 14. Approximately 200 spectators gathered to watch as four teams battled pulling the approximate 27,000 pound load. Deputy Mayor, Robert Pulyk pointed out that the event was not only a first in Vermilion, but a first in Alberta. “Muscular Dystrophy is a broad diagnosis and it affects more people than

you would think. It’s nice to see so many people out having fun and supporting a great cause,” said organizing committee member Kaylyn Gordon. Committee Chair, Meagan Dyjur added, “We are thankful for the awesome turnout! It means a lot to me personally because I have Muscular Dystrophy. I began showing symptoms at 14 years old when I began having a hard time running in gym class. I was diagnosed at 19 years of age and have since had more challenges with stairs and can no longer run. It will eventu-

ally progress to the point where I will be unable to walk anymore. I had a better time after meeting friends at the Edmonton Chapter, and am incredibly grateful for the help I have received for this event. 50,000 Canadians have Muscular Dystrophy. Whether you donated, shared a link, or attended; you made a difference!” Before the pulls got underway, eager to participate and fundraise to make a difference, member of the Vermilion Fire Department Team, Joe Zizek said, “We are ecstatic!”

Jay Howells, a firefighter from St. Albert and member of the national fire fighter relations committee emceed the event, and 30-year member of Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s Mike Mickelson was also in attendance. Howells pointed out that firefighters in Alberta have been raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy since 1954 through campouts and other events. The Fire Truck Pulls began in Eastern Canada and Mickelson is hoping they continue to grow across the country. Continued on page 6.

Cornerstone Co-op was excited to welcome everyone during their Grand Opening of their new liquor store in Vermilion on September 13. General Manager, Graham Getz, welcomed everyone and thanked the entire Co-op team.

Mayor Caroline McAuley was happy to see the opening as a way of maintaining the business se c tor in the communit y and said, “ Congratulations; this is the second business that

The lady slipper is Tanis’ favourite flower as they grew wild at her Grandma and Grand pa’s far m when she was young. In addition, the name Harbrook & Paisley is taken from Harper (her Dad’s last name), Brooks (which is her mom’s last name), and Paisley (a town in Scotland where her husband Toland’s great, great, GreatGrandfather was a clockmaker). The store is excited to be receiving new brands and styles of footwear for fall almost daily, as well as a selection of winter coats for men and women. According to owner Tanis Cochrane, the idea came about when Craig’s announced that they were c losing their doors. It came as quite a shock to the whole community. They wanted to ensure the well known service and quality of products customers had grown accustomed to would continue to be available in their community. “ I’ve always loved shoes! Having been in pharmacy for my whole working career, the idea of a change was intriguing. After having worked on my feet all of those years, I can appreciate a really well made, comfortable pair of shoes. And, I love the statement that a great pair of shoes can make. A pair of shoes can be like art; and when you put a great pair on you can feel like a million bucks!” said owner, Tanis Cochrane. Since starting there; she realized how many people have problems with their feet and it has inspired her to tr y and provide something for everyone. “I am excited to work together with customers and healthcare professionals to tr y and figure out and fill in where some of the needs may exist for footwear for difficult to fit feet. The Changing Provincial Location Of Vermilion

It is generally accepted these days that Vermilion is part of Alberta. Yes, it is close to the Saskatchewan border and has never actually been part of that province, but over the years since the creation of Bowtell, Vermilion and all the communities in the area, there has been a changing border scenario for the communities. As the first settlers began to arrive in the area in the 1870s and 1880s, they would have found the newly-created district of the North-West Territories, which had been created in 1870 by the gaining of control of Rupert’s Land and the North-Western Territory from the Hudson’s Bay Company by Canada. There were very few settlers in the area at the time, but that would soon begin to change. In 1876, the North-West Territories were split into pieces, but for those early settlers, their address wasn’t about to change. IN 1881, the first big change for settlers in the Vermilion area would occur when the North-West Territories were split up again and Alberta was born, sort of. In the new map, Vermilion fell on the northern side of the District of Alberta, just under the District of Athabasca, which took up the entire part of northern Alberta above Lac La Biche. In this new district, Donald Watson Davis would be the politician serving the area in Parliament, which he did from 1887 to 1896. Prior to this, the settlers of the future Vermilion area had no representation in Ottawa since the North-West Territories were not represented in the House of Commons until 1887. The border line of the District of Alberta to the east was in the same spot as the future Alberta-Saskatchewan border. Things would not stay that way though. In 1895, there was a huge change in the

border lines of the prairie area. The District of Alberta was suddenly shrunk, with the border moving to the west so that it was just east of St. Paul. At this point, the future area of Vermilion and Bowtell were in the District of Saskatchewan. When mail would come to places like Breage, the address would be Breage, Saskatchewan, North West Territories. By this point, with Vermilion now resting within, technically, Saskatchewan, the politician serving the people of the area was Wilfrid Laurier himself. At the time, he was serving as the Prime Minister of Canada, giving the settlers excellent representation in the House of Commons, sort of. The people of the area also have a unique distinction because Laurier was also standing for election in Quebec East. Running in two constituencies was allowed at this point and Laurier was elected in both. To

Allied Arts is excited about their upcoming season of performers at the Lakeland College Alumni Theatre in Vermilion which will feature a variety of genres and talent. Cellist, Christine Hanson, will perform a musical version of ‘The Cremation of Sam McGee’ on October 5, at 8 p.m. It will also feature Canadian artist Ted Harrison’s vibrant paintings projected as a backdrop. ‘Rwanda 25 Years After,’ will share songs and stories of a Canadian soldier on

November 3, at 3 p.m. Photographs and music will assist in telling of young army captain, Tim Isberg, who was deployed for a one year mission to Rwanda as an unarmed UN Military Observer for his first of many tours of duty; one that would change his life forever. The music will share the emotional highs and lows of his unique experiences in such a way for each listener to feel connected. According to Wikipedia, the Heebeejeebees are a Canadian A Cappella quartet from Calgary. They are set to perform i n Ve r m i l i o n o n D e c e m b er 7 w i t h dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the show at 8

Vermilion on February 8, at 8 p.m. Icons of Soul’s Luke McMaster was born in Brandon, Manitoba and is expected to bring a contemporary soul / classic R&B show to Vermilion on March 14, at 8 p.m. The Toronto-based singer, songwriter and producer is currently enjoying working with some legends on new songs. “I had a natural inclination to sing in that style and I loved it all – the falsetto, the major keys and the strong melodies – it just resonated with me,” said McMaster. Students Take Sustainable Beef Practices To The Bank

Lakeland College Submitted

An $18.52 cheque caused excitement among Lakeland College animal science technology (AST) students earlier this year. Students involved in the commercial beef unit of the Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF) received the payment in March after an animal they sold was processed through certified sustainable operations of the beef supply chain. That triggered Lakeland’s first cheque through the Canadian Beef Sustainability Acceleration Pilot, which is an initiative led by Cargill, according to Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) sustainability standards. Since then, Lakeland has received a second cheque covering animals processed in June of 2019. “Receiving the cheque is validation of the process we completed to operationalize sustainability and traceability programs at Lakeland College,” says Bevin Hamilton, program head of the AST program at the Vermilion campus. It was a process that began a few years ago after AST program advisory committee members recommended that Lakeland

become more involved in sustainable beef programs. “We talked about these programs in class, but hadn’t done anything on our Student-Managed Farm. Having livestock enterprises that our students manage, we can let our students get involved and implement the programs. That’s what we decided to do,” says Hamilton. In September 2017, work began to attain Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) certification. Three students led the process, doing online training and workshops, filling in the VBP+ enrolment form and completing a self-assessment. An on-site audit was also completed by VBP+ officials. In spring 2018, Lakeland became the first postsecondary institution in Alberta to receive VBP+ certification, proof that Lakeland’s SMF reflects the highest standards for food safety, animal care and environmental stewardship. The VBP+ certification is recognized by the CRSB, and aligns directly with CRSB’s Sustainable Beef Production Standard. Now when producers are certified by VBP+, they are also certified to CRSB standards through a single streamlined process, and eligible to take advantage of programs

like the sustainable sourcing one being led by Cargill. Last fall, students entered age verification information on calves from the commercial beef herd into the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) system and provided the Business Infoxchange System (TrustBIX) with their CCIA account number and along with their permission to share data. TrustBIX then is able to track the age verified calves along with verification that they have come from a VBP+ certified herd, which is the basis for payments under the Cargill Pilot program. “CRSB commends Lakeland College for their commitment to educating students about, and participating in, industry programs that demonstrate value to producers in the beef value chain, and providing them the hands-on experience to take back to their family farms or into the workforce throughout the Canadian agricultural community,” says Anne Wasko, beef producer from Eastend, SK and Chair of the CRSB. “Through their membership in the CRSB, Lakeland engages with stakeholders across the beef value chain and beyond, which enhances their students’ educational experience, and contributes to the sustainability of the beef industry for future generations.” Having students lead Lakeland’s sustainable beef efforts is key, says Geoff Brown, associate dean of Lakeland’s School of Agricultural Sciences. “We’re exposing 60 to 70 students every

year to these programs so when they go back to their farm or work elsewhere in the industry, they have working knowledge of these programs. When their parents or a co-worker says these sustainable beef programs will never work, our students can say, ‘Yes they do, and we got the cheque to prove it’ and ultimately spur on conversations,” he says. “More consumers are demanding sustainably sourced beef and programs like this that demonstrate industry’s commitment to supporting producers for investing in sustainable practices. When value is distributed back along various stages of the chain, it becomes more appealing for producers and other partners to be involved. Our students got to see that there is a payoff and I think that’s huge. Now they’ll be trying to figure out how to get more cattle to qualify for the program.” Michelle Duckworth, a Class of 2019 animal science technology graduate, is already seeing the payoff of this initiative. She’s now the cattle manager at L-7 Land & Cattle Inc., a company that is VBP+ certified and participates in the CRSB program. “Having the opportunity to learn and implement these programs at Lakeland gave the practical experience that has allowed me to start my career off strong. I believe that programs like these are putting us ahead of the game and will one day be the industry standard as sustainable beef is the future.”

all.” With the Universal Tax Cut, the tax rate on income under $47,630 will be reduced from 15 per cent to 13.75 per cent. This will allow an individual taxpayer to save as much as $440 on their taxes. A two-income couple earning an average salary would save over $850 per year. “That’s $850 back in your pocket each and ever y year,” said Scheer. “This means more money to pay the bills, to save up for your kids’ education or maybe even finally afford a family vacation.” S c heer c ompared the Univer sal Tax Cut to the Trudeau Liberal record. Despite campaigning on a promise to help the middle class, Justin Trudeau refused to reduce the low-income tax

bracket. Instead, the Liberals increased taxes on essentials like transit passes, textbooks, and after school programs for kids, while introducing a carbon tax that targets lower income families by increasing the cost of gasoline, home heating and groceries. Today, 80 per cent of Canadian middle-class families are paying an average of $800 more per year in tax compared to when Trudeau was elected. “Justin Trudeau is not as advertised,” said Scheer. “Justin Trudeau has always been able to find millions of dollars to hand out to well-connected corporations. Under the Liberals, the more you have, the more you get. That’s not how government should work.” The Universal Tax Cut is the next step in the Conservative plan to put more

money back in your pockets. Scheer has already announced that a Conservative government will: • Cancel the Trudeau Carbon Tax. • Take the GST off home heating, saving an average household $107. • Make all maternity benefits tax free, saving new parents up to $4000. • Introduce a Green Public Transit Tax Credit, saving a family hundreds of dollars per year. “You shouldn’t have to be a billionaire to get your government’s attention. Instead you deserve a government that respects how hard you work and how much you already pay,” said Scheer. “You deserve a Conservative government whose first priority will be to help you get ahead.”

This month marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The annual event is an opportunity to educate North Americans about the importance of prostate health and to provide information about prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer facing men in Canada. One in

seven Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Every year, about 21,000 Canadian men are diagnosed. Any man can develop prostate cancer but you may be at a higher risk if you have a family history of it, or if you are black, overweight or over the age of 50. Common prostate cancer symptoms include:

• Urination problems • An urgent need to urinate • Frequent urination, especially during the night • A burning sensation or pain when urinating • Being unable to urinate, or having problems starting or stopping urine flow • Blood in urine or semen. If you have any of these symptoms, tell

your doctor or call 811. The prostate is a small gland that is part of the male reproductive system. Normally about the size of a walnut, it is located just below the bladder. Wel c o me bac k students and staff to what we expect to be a great school year. It is hard to believe we are closing in on year twenty of the new millennium. As usual, our fall extracurricular teams, clubs and Pirate Crews are busy getting organized and our senior high girls’ volleyball Mega Volley tournament was held last weekend. We also held our annual Open House on September 12. It was a chance for parents to come see what we have to offer and what our students do here on a daily basis. We are very excited to have Mrs. MacKinnon back with us from her maternity leave in addition to new teachers Ms. Jenna Eddleston, who is filling in for Mrs. Kaye and Ms. Kelly Sam, who will be replacing Mrs. Barnes when she goes on maternity leave. Our first Parent Council meeting is on September 23 at 7:00 p.m. We are in need of a new executive, so if you are a parent of a student at our school, please plan on attending and getting involved. If you have any questions, please give Mr. Bates a call at the school. Make sure to get the JR Robson app for your phone as we put important communication here for parent and students. We will continue to utilize e-mail and texts as communication tools to parents. Please ensure that we have your up to date contact information. You are welcome to come watch. Pirate Crews are up and running again. Elections were held on Wednesday, September 11. The retreat for the successful candidates who will make up the leadership team will be on Thursday, September 19. Each crew will spend time planning the activities that will be held throughout the school year. Award-winning author NATASHA DEEN has been booked to visit our school on October 9. She writes for kids, teens, and adults. She believes the world is changed one story at a time, and as a Guyanese-Canadian whose family immigrated to Canada, she’s seen first-hand how stories have the power to shape the world. When she’s not writing, Natasha enjoys visiting schools, libraries, and other organizations to help people to find and tell the stories that live inside of them.

As our school year continues to unfold, we are welcoming a new priest into our community and school. Father Joy Vadakkan has taken over as the pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Parish. Ms. Svenungard’s Grade One class prepared a set of interview questions to help us all get to know him a little bit better! Kingston Brodbin was curious to know which season Father Joy liked the best. He explained that spring in Canada is his favourite because he loves that everything starts anew, it is a season filled with hope, and he loves when nature turns green again. Daxton Rousseau was interested in what his favourite food was. Father Joy enjoys spicy food and his favourite food from home is beef or chicken curry. On the topic of food, Rylee Richards wondered if there was any food that he disliked. Due to allergies, he is unable to eat seafood, with shrimp being especially bad! Chase Jarvis wanted to know if Father Joy had ever been hunting. When asked, he replied with a smile that he had not… but would love to find someone to go with to give it a try. However, he did mention that he enjoys fishing with his priest friends from Edmonton. Chloe Quigg’s favourite colour is purple and she was curious about which colour was Father Joy’s favourite. He described his two favourite colours as spring green and sky blue. Emry Cadman asked where he used to live before moving to Vermilion. Originally from India, Father Joy moved to

Canada in 2012 and became an associate pastor at St. Thomas and St. Theresa Parish in Edmonton. Aiden Lysons loves tigers and wondered what animal our new priest liked best. Cats are his favourite and, although he doesn’t have one now, he has fond memories of them from his childhood. Boston Bowtell wanted to know what he likes doing for fun? With a passion for art, he loves to paint landscape scenery and enjoyed wood carving when he had access to hard wood in India. When Carter Zurbrigg inquired about his favourite movie he said that he doesn’t have much time to watch movies, but when asked what he liked to read replied with enthusiasm that he studies the Holy Scripture daily! Father Joy is excited about all the new possibilities in Vermilion and has a vision of continuing to grow and build our faith community. Commissioning Mass is a mass held at this time each year, to bless all the educators of our community. We look forward to this special mass which will take place this Sunday, September 15 at 11am. Our annual fundraiser, the Fall Supper will be on Thursday, September 26 at the Regional Centre. There will be two seatings, one at 5:00pm and one at 6:30pm, with the option of purchasing a take-away meal during either of those times if you are out harvesting or otherwise unable to enjoy a sit-down meal. Tickets are available for purchase at the school office, the church, or online (if you have a child attending St. Jerome’s School). We hope to see you there! Break fast will be ser ved to students every morning that they are at school. This is to support any child who comes to school hungry or just needs a nutritious snack to start their day. Squeak and Squawk is an annual event in BTPS for beginning band students. Our Grade 6 students participated in this on September 10 at Kitscoty High School. They learned the basics of putting an instrument together, how to make a sound, how to care for their instrument, and then learned a few notes.
