Children leaped of f the bus with excitement for their first day of school in Vermilion on September 3. At Vermilion Elementary School, Principal Calvin Anhorn and Vice-Principal Sheila Doherty enjoyed welcoming everyone. “This is my favourite day of the year!”
said Doherty. According to Principal, Allan Chase, the first day of school at St. Jerome’s was also very exciting. He explained that leadership students had already been in decorating and preparing activities. Thus, on the first day, every child, parent and staff member was greeted by leadership students with a warm welcome, a snack and a helping hand for anyone
who needed it. The children were all excited to see their friends and maybe finally wear those clothes that have been waiting on the dresser. They were excited to see who was in their class, who their teacher was and if there were any new students in their class. Staff members were just as excited to see the children that they haven’t seen for two months and get
back to classes, leadership activities, and coaching sports. Being a teacher and working in a school is truly a gift in that you get to see children at their very best, we get to be around the most energetic group of people that exists! We get to see them grow from pre-school to adults and it is a lot of fun to be a part of that process,” said Chase.

Enjoying the sunshine, approximately 500 people attended Art in the Park in Vermilion on September 7. Visitors enjoyed perusing the different mediums of local artwork including jewellery, pottery, painting, leatherwork, and clothing. People travelled from all over the region to attend The Good Life Institute’s event; some even took in classes, and enjoyed lunch by Lasting Impressions Catering and cinnamon buns
at the community oven sponsored by Inter Pipeline. “What an amazing collection of community artisans! This event helps to create awareness within the community and draws people to our community which is great,” said Mayor, Caroline McAuley. Plum Pie

This is my latest cooking adventure. I had never made a plum pie before, or even tasted one. One of the things I love about harvest time is the little purple prune plums that are in season at the same time. I can’t resist buying them. I had just finished making an apple pie, with a butter pastry, and as I looked at the plums, sitting in a container on my counter, and I wondered if I could make a pie out of them? The answer is yes.
Did you know plums are full of lots of nutritional benefits? Prune plums are famous for their ability to improve digestive health, due to the high content of fiber and the natural sorbitol sugar that works like a laxative. Plums are high in antioxidants which help keep our cells healthy, and reduce inflammation. These specific antioxidants are beneficial for bone health, helping to prevent bone loss, may even assist in reversing it. This bone protective property is thought to be because of the vitamin and mineral profile that include those that are known to be bone protective. Plums help to balance blood sugar, even though they are a fruit. This is because they also contain nutrients
that raise the hormone adiponectin, which in turns regulated blood sugar. Plums are considered to be heart healthy, because of studies that have shown a reduction in bad cholesterol and raised blood pressure with regular consumption. The study dose was twelve plums daily or a combination of plums and prune juice. Plums promote hair growth by reducing adrenal gland fatigue, and thereby reducing hair loss. Plums are a source of iron, needed for our cells. Plums have also been found to enhance mind clarity and reduce brain fog. When making this pie use ripe plums that feel a little soft, as they are the sweetest. I have been busy attending several
shows in Toronto and Edmonton, so next week I will try and share some of the trends and highlights for this fall and winter and the upcoming spring and summer 2020. Plum Pie 5 cups plums, pitted and quartered 3 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons flour Pie crust for top and bottom Combine the sugar and the flour. Stir the mixture into the plum, quarters. Put the plum mixture into a prepared pastry shell. Add the top crust, cutting in several areas for the steam to escape. Bake at 350 degrees for 55 – 60 minutes. Allow to cool and refrigerate before serving.
Four Decades Of Teaching At The Old Blackfoot School

It wa s i n 19 27, the golden era for one-room schools in Alberta, when Nelson Robison was offered the position of teaching at the Blackfoot School. A total of forty applications had come through for the position but Robison had beaten then all. He would receive $1,200 per year to begin teaching in September of that year, with 30 students across nine grades. Over the course of the coming years, he would tend to teach around 30 students, with it rising to as much as 40 at one point. The pay was very good for teaching but that would soon change when The Great Depression hit. Robinson would be lucky though. While many teachers in the area would see their salaries fall as low as $600 per year, he was never paid less than $900. Beginning in 1930,
he also had a teacher trainee from the Edmonton Normal School for one week each March. As Robinson said, “ the students enjoyed having the practice teacher as it created new experiences.” One of the most important events each year was the Christmas concert, which always brought out many people from the area, even those without kids. Various concerts were held on different evenings, so parents and the young people of the area would attend as many as they could. After 1939, most of the students in grades 10 and above would be sent to Kitscoty for schooling, rather than being taught at Blackfoot. In 1951, Robinson states that the Oxville School was moved to the Blackfoot location where it served as a second room. With the second building, it was planned to have grades 7 to 9 a Flowerdale attend Blackfoot but due to the high number of students, only grade 9

students were taught at Blackfoot. By this point, Robinson was the principal of the school and also the teacher of grades 5 to 9 or 6 to 9 depending on the size of the grades. When summer vacation would start, Robinson would take on his second job working at a lumber yard, or sometimes the general store or post office while the owners were on vacation themselves. In 1962, Robinson made the decision to retire from teaching after 43.5 years in the profession and nearly four decades at Blackfoot. He was presented with a desk set by both current and former students at a picnic given in his honor. In 1964, a new school room was built and in 1967 it was called the Nelson Robinson School. Pneumonia Prevention At Your Pharmacy
Submitted When you’re at increased risk for pneumonia, it’s important to know how you can avoid contracting the disease. We chatted with Kim Clarke, Pharmacy Manager at Cornerstone Co-op in Vermilion, Alta., about pneumonia, its causes and what you can do to protect yourself. What is pneumonia? “Pneumonia is a lower respiratory tract infection leading to inflammation of the lungs,” said Clarke. It’s a contagious, serious condition that can affect people of any age, but it’s most common and most dangerous in very young children, people older than 65 and people with underlying medical problems. Although there are different types, this article will focus on community-acquired pneumonia. This is the term for pneumonia contracted in a community setting outside

of the healthcare system—hospitals, care homes, etc. It can be caused by viruses or bacteria. Pneumonia causes fever and chills, a cough, increased mucus production, difficulty breathing and pain when breathing deeply. Complications from pneumonia, including fluid in the lungs, infection, cardiac complications or blood clots, can be lifethreatening. Who is at risk? Clarke explained that some groups of adults are at a higher risk of developing pneumonia. You may be at risk if you meet the following criteria: • You’re older than 65. • You have chronic conditions such as chronic lung disease, renal, heart or liver disease and diabetes. • Your immune system is weakened due to HIV, organ transplant, chemo-
therapy or long-term use of steroid medications. • You smoke or consume a large amount of alcohol. • You’ve had a recent viral upper respiratory tract infection such as influenza. • You have difficulty coughing due to stroke, limited mobility, sedating drugs or alcohol. How is pneumonia treated? Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics. Most people can be treated with oral antibiotics at home; however, more severe infections may require treatment in hospital. “Some people also require treatment with inhalers and oral corticosteroids to help bring down inflammation in the lungs and help with shortness of breath,” said Clarke. How can community-acquired pneumonia be prevented? Living a healthy lifestyle, including eating

right, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight, can help prevent many health problems. Clarke noted that quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke exposure is another important way to help prevent pneumonia and improve your overall health, as smoking causes lung damage which can increase your risk of getting pneumonia. Always remember to wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer. If you’re sick, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and dispose of used tissues immediately. “There is also a vaccine against the most common type of bacterial pneumonia. Ask your pharmacist or doctor if you should have it. You should get a flu vaccine every year,” said Clarke. If you have questions about pneumonia, talk to your Co-op pharmacist today.

They were bustling as participants signed up to start a new year of activities. “I love watching my students develop self-confidence and control through taekwondo activities (kicking, punching, and blocking). Every person is different and martial arts are different from
other sports in that they are an individual sport. We are a family friendly club, and with Raptor Taekwondo, students can develop as a whole person,” said Master Greg Haslehurst. Overall, children were excited to see the possible activities, and adults were pleased to have one location to complete all of their registrations.

They Who Surround Us - Acting Workshop

Nearly 30-year film and television actor from Los Angeles, Troy Ruptash, hosted a youth and adult acting workshop at the Elks Hall in Vegreville on August 10. Ruptash has written the new film, They Who Surround Us, which honours Ukrainian settlers and their culture, and he will also be acting and directing the film. He and other production team members are formerly from Vegreville and he is thrilled with the opportunity to give back to the community. According to Sandra Coley, the youth workshop included imagination exercises to give the young actors direction on how to be in the moment and forget that there is an audience watching. Some of the youth also worked with Troy on a scene from the movie to learn about working with a director. The adults were given material to work
on and were taught more advanced techniques. Some of the children and adults in attendance may be invited for an audition. Ruptash was thankful for his family’s support on workshop day including his mom sharing her homemade oatmeal cookies! “To see all the children seated in their chairs up front with their parents off to the side watching was so special. We had let the word out that one of the lead roles in the film is an eight-year-old boy and that it hadn’t been cast yet, so to look over and see a ton of eager and excited 7-10-yearold boys anxiously awaiting instructions will be making me smile for a long time. What a joy it was to meet all these local residents as well as people that came from afar. I led them through some warmup breathing and relaxation exercises, concentration work, and some improvs and imagination exercises to create a sense of place. The time flew by. In fact,
we went over our allotted time and the truth is I could have kept going for another couple of hours at least. When I set out to develop this project, one of the things that were important to me was giving back to my community.
This project is teaching me so much about community and connection and sharing this workshop with all these people was kind of the definition of all of that. I hope everyone who participated had fun, I know I did!” said Ruptash.

Celebration Of Music On The Yellow Head
Submitted The Kitscoty and District Community and Seniors Association hosted the 5th annual Gospel Jamboree at the Kitscoty Community Hall on August 24th and 25th. The activities began at noon and wrapped up each day at 6:30 for approximately 150 attending each day. People arrived from as far away as Fort MacMurray, Czar, Camrose, Stony Plain, Red Deer. Saskatoon, Tofield, Edmonton, Cold Lake, Innisfail, Sherwood Park, and from our local area. Those who came for the two days to share their gift of music and their stories of life changing experiences were: Yvonne St Germaine, Kenny Mac, Three and Company, The Fehr Family Band, JoyPhil Sound, Potter’s Clay and Ross Lotsberg and Cowboy Church Band. Cornerstone Co-op will be donating five cents from every litre of fuel sold on Fuel Good Day - September 17, to Victim Services. Recipients will include the Battle River Victims Assistance Society for the Vermilion, Wainwright and area, and St. Paul & Area Victim Services in St. Paul. “These organizations provide support, information and appropriate referral to victims of crime, crisis, tragedy and other misfortune in our communities. It is important to support them because often, victims of crime experience loss and it’s important to address that while insurance may replace items lost, there’s an impact that crime has that isn’t always addressed. It’s important to Cornerstone Co-op to support an organization that exists to make living
in our community better,” said Community Engagement Coordinator Heather MacMillan. According to the Battle-River-VictimAssistance-Society, Victim Services representatives are based and located at RCMP detachments and can attend with RCMP to notify family members of a sudden death to offer emotional and practical support in the form of information about what to do next and what happens next. At the request of the RCMP, they can also attend crisis situations with the RCMP to offer emotional and practical support to people in need. In the event of a crime where charges are laid, they provide a multitude of services including: explaining the justice system and court process, keeping victims up to date on all court dates and proceedings, and offering emotional support through the whole process. They can connect victims with
Crown representatives and other agency’s as needed (for example: therapists, Alberta Works, shelters, etc.); provide and explain Victim Impact statements, Restitution and Alberta Financial Benefits forms; prepare witnesses to testify; attend trial to help explain everything that is happening
that day and assist in making the day go as smoothly as possible; ensure that the needs and concerns of victims are heard and considered at all times; and follow up after trial with court decisions, sentencing outcome and any further things that need to be done or questions that victims have.

Bounty Enterprises Inc. will be hosting ABBAMANIA in Lloydminster at the Vic Juba Community Theatre on September 12, at 7:30 p.m. The all Canadian ABBA tribute band is the one who was invited to perform for the cast of Mamma Mia when they played in Toronto, and will feature more tributes from the Bee Gees – Night Fever, and special guest, Cher. Performers will share some history and the audience is sure to enjoy the three acts of fun, classic songs. According to producer and head engineer, Garry Lichach, they have great vocals, are funny and get the audience involved. “ABBAMANIA is in our 19th year of touring and we have performed more concerts than the Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson and Madonna combined; playing

Welcome Back Spartans! Another school year at St. Jerome’s is off to a great start. Students, staf f, and parents were warmly greeted on the first day of school by student council members with juice, granola bars, and fruit. These awesome Spartans came in a day early to decorate the entrances in our school colours red, white, and black. It was a lovely way to start the day, so thank you to student council for their efforts. We have many new faces working at St. Jerome’s this year. We have brought on board a number of talented teachers. Here is a little bit about each of them: Jill Schmidt: “I was born and raised in Vermilion and now live with my husband and two kids on an acreage West of town. I’ve previously taught in Paradise Valley,
Wainwright and Kitscoty. I’m so excited to be joining the St. Jerome’s family!” Shalene Zayac: Shalene taught briefly at St. Jerome’s many years ago. Welcome back Shalene! Shauna Despins: “I grew up in Whitecourt, Alberta. I’m married with three children, two of whom go to St. Jerome’s. I’ve taught grade 3 for 2 years, and grade 4 for 27 years. My family moved to Vermilion the summer of 2018, and we love the friendly and welcoming atmosphere here!” Nicole Frankiw: “Being raised in Vermilion, I am very excited to be returning to Vermilion to begin my teaching career here at St. Jerome’s. I am looking forward to a great year with my grade 5 class.” Jodi Molsberry: My family and I moved to Vermilion December 22, 2018. My four children (Kyden Grade 11, Jordice Grade 8, Callum Grade 7, Thadeus Grade 5) attend St. J! My oldest daughter Taylor still
lives in the Humboldt area. She is getting married June 20, 2020. My husband Blair is the Cornerstone Co-op Gas Bar Coordinator in Vermilion and oversees St. Paul and Wainwright locations. I am very excited to be teaching Grade 6 & 7 ELA and Social, plus Drama and Foods classes for the 2019-2020 school year. We are also happy to welcome the following Educational Assistants to our team: Irene Rochford, Penny Ryan, and Reynilda Reyes. September is always a busy time of year for the staff and we were fortunate to be treated with coffee, donuts, and muffins Thursday morning thanks to 93.7 Wayne FM for the little pick me up. We have exciting news regarding the construction of our universally accessible playground. Just before school started, the old middle playground was disassembled and removed. This left a big sandbox which the students have been having fun
playing in! We are looking for volunteers to help with the community build of the new structure October 3-5. We will need 5-6 people per day to help with assembly and set up. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Allan Chase at the school office. Spartans Volleyball is already underway! Our Sr. Boys team was so eager that they started their practices this past June! They are off to compete in the Earle Berry Augustana Tournament this weekend in Camrose. The Sr. Girls will attend MegaVolley in Vermilion, hosted by J.R. Robson. The Jr. Boys and Girls teams all had their first practices this week. Here are some impor tant up and coming events: Picture Day is Wednesday, September 11 for K-7 students, and Thursday, September 12 for students grades 8-12. Mark your calendars, the Fall Supper is on Thursday September 26.

T h e V ES s t a f f would like to welcome all of our VES families. We are so excited to be back in school to make and share learning experiences. Teachers were very busy the week before last, preparing for the arrival of students, engaging in important school level conversations about the new school year, learning information from Tiffanee Brown regarding Concept Based Instruction and collaborating with colleagues across BTPS. Now we are extremely happy to have students in our classrooms. In period 3 of the first day back, we had an assembly, starting with the recognition of Treaty 6 territory and the singing of O Canada and our VES song. All of
the VES staff members were introduced and the new students were acknowledged. Mrs. Moses discussed our virtues, with honesty and goal setting being our September virtues. Grade 6 students were told of an awesome opportunity to be part of a Grade 6/7 volleyball team at JR Robson. Mrs. Joa talked about the Creative Kids Cub and the Spirit Club. Mr. Anhorn informed us that the Running Club would be starting very soon. We ended the assembly with a “Would You Rather” activity. Please make it one of your goals to join us on September 12 for our muffin morning open house from 7:45-9:00. (KA families will have their muffin morning on September 11 from 7:45-9:00.) This will be a drop-in morning to allow you to see your child’s classroom and teacher, and to tour the school. You will also get
another chance to be in our school when you come out to the School Council meeting at 7:00 on September 16 (child care is provided). Farmcash Opens Fall Online Application Offering Alberta Producers Up To $1 Million In Cash Advances

(Calgary, Alberta) September 3, 2019 – Over the Labour Day long weekend, the FarmCash cash advance program opened the 2019 fall application. As of September 1, Alberta producers can apply online through FarmCash for a fall advance on over 50 agricultural commodities. FarmCash is offered through the Advance Payments Program of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). The FarmCash fall application offers Alberta producers up to $1 million in cash
advances, with the first $100,000 interestfree on all commodities and $500,000 on canola advances for the 2019 program year. Additionally, FarmCash offers a competitive interest rate of prime minus 0.50% on the remaining balance. “FarmCash is a cashflow manage ment tool to help farmers better manage their production costs and market their crops when the timing is right,” says Gar y Stanford, Alberta Wheat Commission chair. “With the current trade and weather challenges Alberta farmers are facing, it’s another option
in their farm management toolbox.” FarmCash’s mission is to provide Alberta producers with a time saving cash advance option. Inexperience Marauders Learn Lessons In Season Opener

With a handful of practices behind a half sophomore-half rookie team, the Vermilion Marauders knew their season opener would be about game experience. For the first quarter, the Marauders kept the Provost Panthers within striking distance. They trailed 22-13 just 25 seconds into the second quarter. Then the Panthers scored in the next minute, followed by three more touchdowns to lead 49-13 at halftime. Because of that lead the second half was played straight time. Both teams recorded majors in each of the quarters. The Panthers final touchdown came on the last play of the game and made the final score 65-27 in their favour. Seven Marauders played last year, and most were in grade nine then. Of the 14 current players, 10 are in grade 10. One of those grade 10 rookies took on the role of quarterback. TylinVolddemonstrated he has the right skill combination for the 6-man game. He scored three of the four Vermilion touchdowns and was the team’s leading rusher with over 150
yards. More than half of those yards came on an 86-yard ramble mid-way through the third quarter. After forcing Provost to turn the ball over on downs, the Marauders found themselves on their own 14-yard line. On the first play, JaybenGamracy got beyond coverage for the second time, but the ball was short. On the next play Vold found room down the left side and scrambled his way to the endzone. He also converted the TD by running in the ball. Gamracy and Vold later united for a passing convert on the Marauders final touchdown. Gamracy had been getting behind coverage all game but dropped one, had one go over his head and another fall short. Then, their timing worked for the convert. Vermilion’s first touchdown was a Landyn Herzog kick-off return following the Panthers first score. He reversed direction twice and lost his closest pursuer at the 25-yard line. The Marauders didn’t try for the two-point kicking convert as the team hadn’t had time to practice the play. In the 6-man game, kicked converts are two points and it’s a single point for a run
