On Friday, August 16 Mannville Co-op hosted a Long Table supper at the Mannville Elks Hall to celebrate 100 years in the community. The supper also served as the kick-off to the Mannville Country Fair. The partly sunny skies and chilly, blustery conditions didn’t put a damper on the Mannville Country Fair that was held on August 17. The day began with a Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m., and was hosted by the Mannville Historical Society. After breakfast the annual parade started at 10:30 a.m., which boasted antique trac-

tors, colourful floats by businesses and organizations, who tossed treats to the children and adults as they passed by. Once the parade concluded attendees headed their way to the many events offered throughout the day. Said events included the antique tractor show which is always a popular event. The winners of the show were voted on by the spectators and were as follows: Viewer choice - went to Dustin Babij with a 1953 Massey Harris “33”. Steel Wheel winner was Mike Clark with a Prosser Antiques 1936 John Deere “D” and the Original/unrestored - went to Ryan Baker with a 1931 McCormick-Deering W30. Winners of the spectator participation draws were Edith West and Brandy Hess.

The sponsors were Webb’s Machinery, Agland Vermilion, Rocky Mountain Case, Ireland Farm Equipment and StudeBaker Industries. Fair goers attended the Bench Show admiring submissions in the following categories: Flowers & Arrangements, Vegetables & Fruit, Home Canning & Baking, Sewing, Handicrafts, Quilting, Golden Age, Photography, Art & Scrapbooking, School Work, and Pee Wee exhibits for children under the age of seven. Other events throughout the day were carnival games, junior pedal tractor pulls, entertainment by Karen Nedzielski, and a magic show with Sprinkles the clown.

The greasy pig contest was sponsored by Studebaker Industries and was a big hit again this year. The winner for the mens event was James Hill and the female event winner was Dana Hill who both received $100 each in pork products provided by Mannville Co-op. New events this year were the Ping Pong Ball Drop which was sponsored by the Village of Mannville, Shantell and Tim Larson, Amanda and Josh Gryshuk, Parent Link Red Wagon, John and Tina Bielesch and the Mannville Library. The Perogy eating contests wereww sponsored by Baba Jenny’s with Tyler Archer winning the adult category and Lincoln Baker winning the children’s category.

The Come By The Hills Festival took place on August 16 and 17th at the beautiful Mistahiya hills along the Battle River Valley. There were 12 performances to take in with big names performing. Among them were Angel Forrest, Black

Velvet, Dirt Road Angels, El Niven & The Alibi, Funkafeelya, JJ Shiplett, The Northern Pikes, Prairie Sky, The Prairie States, Mr. Rayz, Rosina Cove and Stephan Fearing. Jim Zadorozny mentioned that the crowd persevered through the poor weather conditions and didn’t let it dampen their enjoyment of the shows. He also went on to say that this year’s line up was the best ever and they had more vendors than ever on site as well. New this year was a 50/50 draw worth over $1500. Zadorozny when on to say that some of the surprise performers were El Viven & The Alibi and the Dirt Road Angels who were fantastic Country Music singers. He said The Northern Pikes band has hits going back to the mid 80’s and were the half time entertainment in Calgary for the CFL game recently. Orest Popil commented that the Festival was an excellent event and Bruce MacDuff said, “If the weather cooperated on Friday, that would have been the only way it could be better, all performances were awesome.

One of the many volunteers is Todd Aughey, from Wainwright who books all the performers. He commented that he is thrilled to have the talent they have this year and the Festival is getting bigger every year, and all profits will be going into next year’s Festival. Next year’s concert will be the 10th Come By The Hills. Carol Coleman, President of the Come

By The Hills Festival said the Festival was awesome even though the weather on Friday slowed down the performance a bit, but true music lovers were in attendance despite it. She went on to say that for such a small event they were able to finalize such great performers and make your festival experience special. They have over 70 volunteers who help to put this great Festival together.

The Town of Vermilion and Lakeland Emergency Training Centre will be hosting the 1st ever Vermilion Fire Truck Pulls on September 14 on 49 Avenue between 50th and 51 Street. Local Vermilion volunteer firefighters will be participating and community members are encouraged to join from 12 – 3 p.m. with opening Ceremonies taking place at 1 p.m. Entry fees are $250 per team and can be made up of eight males, nine co-ed, or 10 females. Participants will compete against one another to see who can pull a 35,000 pound fire truck 100 feet the fastest! This event is expected to bring members of the fire service, police, EMS, businesses and the public together to raise funds and help support Canadians impacted by neuromuscular disorders. Activities include a BBQ following the event, a dunk tank, 50/50 and silent auction. “Firefighters have been Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s largest network of supporters since 1954, when they joined in raising awareness and funds for the organization. They vow to always support those with

neuromuscular disorders until a cure can be found. As a person directly being affected by this support, being affected by muscular dystrophy myself, I can say that their support is so meaningful and special,” said Meagan Dyjur. She went on to say that this event is definitely a first for the Town of Vermilion, the Emergency Training School, and the Vermilion Fire Department, as this is the first event of its kind being hosted in Alberta! It’s also the first Muscular Dystrophy Canada event being hosted in Vermilion. Group rates are available at the Pomeroy Inn and Suites for participants. Following the Fire Truck Pulls there will be a Steak Fry at the Vermilion Legion. There will be a choice between steak ($18) and chicken ($15). Participants can pay for their meal at the legion. Please make sure to indicate on the team registration form if you will be attending the steak fry after the event. The deadline for attending the steak fry is Tuesday, September 10th. Where has the summer gone! It will soon be back to school time, fall and then har vest tie on the farm. As I write this it is a very cool, damp and windy day. Not at all the weather I would usually expect for summer. Normally I would not want to turn on the oven mid August, but today is the perfect time to

bake some cookies. One of my favorite cookies for fall is soft chewy gingersnaps. They have a wonderful flavor and aroma. I have gotten many compliments on these cookies, in which the recipe is a variation of a local grandma. From the first time I tasted them I had to have this recipe, which I am now sharing with you. The original vintage recipe used margarine instead of butter and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and ginger and the 350 degree temperature for 15 minutes baking time. It is also a nice

Because of the concerns of consuming the harmful vegetable oil and trans fats that are in margarine I now use butter in this recipe with excellent results, as the butter imparts a rich flavor. To keep them soft and chewy, store in an air tight container. If you over bake them a little, don’t worry, you will just have crispy ginger snaps. Soft Gingersnaps 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup butter

If all the world was ours to give, We’d give it all and more, To see your smiling face again Come walking through the door.

1 egg 4 tablespoons of cooking molasses Pinch of salt 2 cups of flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 teaspoons ginger Add the dry ingredients to the mixture of sugar, butter, egg and molasses. Shape into small balls, about 1” – 1 1/4 “ in diameter. Roll the balls in white sugar. Do not flatten, or flatten only slightly. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes. When the cookies have cooled, store them in an air tight container to retain the soft chewy texture. For the traditional, harder gingersnap, or ginger bread men bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. At Christmas when making gingerbread men, roll out the dough on a well floured surface, dusting the top of the dough with flour as well, to prevent the rolling pin from sticking. Historically gingersnaps have their roots in being an English and European cookie. They would be served with tea and cucumber sandwiches which provide a cooling contrast to the warm spices in the cookies. In England ginger snaps are often called ginger nuts. These cookies are also nice with coffee, hot cocoa or how my boys always like them, with a big glass of cold milk.

Openings And Closures For The Warwickville School

Once located as the first range west of the AlbertaSaskatchewan border, the Warwickville School District has its start in the early 20th century. In a story published in the May 13, 1909 Lloydminster Times, it was announced that the post office in the area was changing its name from Westnorthland to Warwickville. It is not known where the first name came from, or why it was changed, but this change in the post office name would then be applied to the future school that would be built in the area. When settlers in the area were beginning to talk about creating a school for their children, they had several names that they considered. One such name was Lake View, which was chosen because of the many lakes in the area. Unfortunately, there was another Lake

View already and it was decided that they would use the name of the post office, Warwickville, which was named for the birthplace of Harry Gould, an early pioneer. He originally came from Warwickshire in England. When the school district was organized, there were 65 people living in the area and of that, eight were school-aged children and ten where pre-school age. A board of trustees was formed, and Stafford Caville was chosen as the senior trustee. A site was chosen for the school and work quickly began. The first teacher at the school was Eva Grant, who came from Edmonton to teach the original 12 students at the school. The school would remain on its original parcel of land until it was decided that a new more centralized location was needed. As a result, John Charters moved the entire school in 1929 using a sixteen-horse outfit to get the job done. The school would operate out of this location for the entire 1930s, as The

Great Depression raged and enrolment began to decline heavily as more students went into Vermilion to attend school. By June of 1941, three students were attending at the school and it was hard to find teachers for the students. The decision was made to close the school at that point, with the building now being used for social functions throughout the decade. In 1950, with the Baby Boomers beginning to hit school age, it was decided that the school would open again for the nine students who would be attending. The school would once again operate for an entire decade until June of 1959 when it was decided to close the school for good. The last teacher at the school was Zella Dustow. In 1960, Orville Lowrie bought the school and converted it to a welding and

Fourth Annual Feast On The Farm

Agriculture enthusiasts gathered at Lakeland College’s Research Centre on the Barr Farm in Vermilion as they hosted their 4th Annual Feast on the Farm on August 15. S u p p o r t i n g s t u d e n t l e a d e r s h i p, the event kicked off the 30th Anniversary celebrations for the Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF). Guests received blankets in honour of the special celebration as a thank you for their commitment to Lakeland College. This year, a VIP table with a separate ser ver was auctioned of f as well. Special

guests included MLA Garth Rowswell, Deputy Mayor Robert Pulyk, town and county councillors, Lakeland College Board Chair Scott Webb, and Lakeland College President and CEO Alice Wainwright – Stewart. Student emcees were thrilled to announce that past Almuni and past b o ar d m e m b er M i ke Kote l ko fr o m Highland Feeders’ along with Denise d onated $ 50,0 0 0 to the c ampaign which will be applied to research projects for beef cattle. Board Chair, Scott Webb, thanked guests for their support and noted that William Barr who began the homestead 100 years ago was a student at

Lakeland College went from renting land to owning it, and are thankful for their partnership with New Holland which alleviated working with dated equipment. Now students operate six state of the art facilities and manage everything from herd health to public relations. Overall everyone enjoyed the meal in a lovely setting, the opportunity to support student leadership, and entertainment by the Dirt Rich Band.

On August 21, at 6 p.m., families will have the opportunity to bring thin crust pizza to be cooked (can be from a local restaurant, grocery store, or homemade), make acrylic paintings, and play games. Free cinnamon buns will be offered in celebration of their last evening while supplies last. The program is already making plans to continue next year.

Enbridge Ride To Conquer Cancer

Submitted Team Vermilion was very proud to be a part of raising funds for such a worthy cause. We all had our own personal reasons for riding and committing to raising funds. It is rare to know a family that has not been touched by cancer in some way. Our fundraising was led by our team Captain, Darren Bratrud followed closely by Scott Webb. They both earned a polka

dot jersey for their efforts. There were only 10 polka dot jerseys among over 1,200 riders. Our team of 5 riders raised over $51,000.00. The ride was a challenging course with continuous rolling hills. Riders with yellow flags on their bikes indicated a cancer survivor, when we saw those flags riding up a hill, it made the hill seem not so bad. There were plenty of inspiring stories in

camp the first night, one rider talked about her journey with cancer and how if people hadn’t raised money in prior years to fund research, she may not have survived to be able to ride this year. We developed some great team camaraderie over the past few months as we trained together, which made our ride even more special as we rode and cheered for each other. Our on road support / cheering

team of Bernie, Bonita, Brenda and Shelly not only cheered us on but cheered many other riders as they climbed the hills and rode across the finish line. We finished our ride in style coming in together proudly wearing our Team Vermilion jerseys. The team would like to thank all of our supporters who believed in us enough to donate to the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Submitted To kick off the Mannville Country Fair, and to celebrate Mannville Co-op’s 100 years in the community, Co-op hosted a beef on a bun supper Friday night with over 300 in attendance. It was planned as a Long Table Supper to be held down mainstreet but the Alberta weather was “un-Co-op-erative” with 12 degree temperatures and 55km/ hr wind gusts. Instead, over 300 people were snug as a bug in the Mannville Elks Hall for the supper. All proceeds from the dinner went to Mannville Minor Ball - who led table bussing, serving, and kitchen clean-up. Also present at the dinner were General Manager Graham Getz and Director of Operations Kory Kralkay as well as board members Cole Jackson, Ron Boisvert, Keith Brower, Don Zarowny, John Trefanenko, Ken Wasmuth, and

The Edmonton Ghostbusters made a $520 donation to the northern Alberta Make-A-Wish Foundation on August 6. One of the founders, Bruce Meer, is from Vermilion and was eager to have a group of fellow Ghostbusters participate in the Vermilion Fair where they raised the funds. Overall they were happy to interact with the community and thankful for the public’s donations. The Edmonton Ghostbusters operate all over northern Alberta, and can participate in any number of community events such as library or comic shows, fan expos, or at a multitude of children’s activities or games

including Birthday parties. “We have members all over Alberta and in other provinces! We are always looking for new members, and it is free to join; all you need is your passion and Ghostbuster gear to begin. All ages are welcome,” said Meer. The Edmonton Ghostbusters began as a sister group to the Calgary Ghostbusters. Volunteer members enjoy having the opportunity to showcase their Ghostbusters gear and regularly find opportunities to support the northern Alberta MakeA-Wish Foundation. Rusty Bit Awards

Vermilion 4H Light Horse Club Submitted

The Vermilion 4H Light Horse Club hosted the 50th Annual Rusty Bit Horse Show in Vermilion on August 10. It was a great day for weather and we had several participants ranging in age from 2 - 71 who rode in both the morning show classes as well as the gymkhana in the afternoon. The Coutts Family started this show 50 years ago at Jim Powell’s place south of Vermilion and have provided the Rusty Bit Trophy every year following – it was started by Allan Coutts and

the tradition has been carried on by his son Bill Coutts. This year the Rusty Bit Trophy was won by Lesley Farkash and her horse Gracie as well as the Overall Senior High Point Award. Dixie Allen was the Intermediate High Point Winner, Kayley Wartman won the Junior High Point, and Casey Bunney won the Walk Trot / Lead Line Award. We would also like to thank Sonja Wilkinson for Judging, Courtney Hawryluk for being our Ring Master, and Tammy Hampel for her wonderful job of Announcing for us all day. Looking forward to the 51st year.

Conservation Finds A Home On The Range: DUC Supports Beef Industry For Environmental Sustainability With ABP

Ducks Unlimited Canada Submitted

(August 14, 2019 – Camrose, Alta.) Hot on the trail of its work with the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) are teaming up to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable beef production and to advance wetland and grassland conservation. For decades, Canadian cattle producers have made conservation part of their operations, and presently, these efforts to conserve wetlands and grasslands are setting new standards for beef sustainability on working landscapes. This scenario places DUC and ABP in a unique position where they will work together to implement varying tactics that result in positive contributions towards resolving issues relating to climate change, environmental protection, consumer demands and global markets. It’s a perfect fit. “As a leader in wetland conservation, Ducks Unlimited Canada is in a unique position to recognize the steps that the beef industry has taken to be a leader in sustainability,” says Mickenzie PlemelStronks, DUC’s cattle industry liaison.

“We also recognize the industry’s commitment to science and its effort to be solution based. With that in mind, our conservation programs are a great tool to help beef producers address specific needs on their farms, while playing a key role in maintaining the land and its natural areas.” Tom Lynch-Staunton, ABP’s government relations and policy manager agrees. “Cattle producers have always been environmental stewards,” says Lynch-Staunton. “We appreciate the recognition and support from DUC and look forward to further collaboration on the importance of grazing for optimal wetland and rangeland health and conversation. Grasslands are fundamental to cattle production and this partnership plays an important role in preserving our natural habitat.” Partnering with those who produce food, including cattle ranchers, has been central to DUC’s mission since 1938. In those early years, DUC’s founders worked alongside farmers and ranchers as extreme drought devastated much of the country. They banded together to put water back on the land, not only to support the crops and animals under their care, but also to safeguard these natural areas and the many

benefits they provide. Today DUC continues to support farmers and ranchers with programs that help provide grasslands for livestock by offering incentives to landowners for converting cultivated land back into perennial cover. During the next three years, ABP and DUC will engage in several events and

public awareness campaigns that will help Albertans gain a better understanding of how cattle and conservation work together to support sustainable agriculture practices, the environment and food security.
