The L akeland Emergency Train ing Centre in Vermilion hosted their Platoon 1 Graduation Ceremony on July 19. Families of students came to tour the facilities, congratulate the stu d e nt s an d h e l p c e l e br ate t h e ir completion of the Firefighter Training Program. For the past three months, students encountered numerous hands on skill building opportunities. L a k e l a n d E m e r g e n c y Tr a i n i n g Centre prepares firefighters and other emergency personnel to respond to emergency events in all sorts of conditions. They offer hands-on practical training and claim it is with the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art training grounds in Canada. Their informa-

tion package states that they have one of the best facilities in North America. Members of Platoon 1 learned how to fight structure fires as well as dangerous goods response and wildland fires. Other additional courses included resume writing and mental health resilience. Instructor Alan Jones thanked ever yone for coming as well as for choosing Lakeland and said, “You’ve all looked after each other.” “You are a firefighter! Own it; be p r o u d o f i t ,” s a i d I n s t r u c t o r, D o n Keenan. Pee Wee Boys Provincial Win

Submitted Vermilion Pee Wee Reds win 13U Provincials in Leduc. The tournament started with a disappointing 8-3 loss against Red Deer. After the first game the team played some excellent baseball winning the remainder of the round robin games. 14-10 over Leduc, 15-8 over Bashaw and 15-9 over Northern Alberta. This set up a rematch against Red Deer in the finals. The team played an error free game and held Red Deer to only 3 runs in a 14-3 win. The accomplishment is made even greater considering this team consisting of Vermilion and Marwayne boys has only been together for three weeks.

Summer is halfway over and the weather thus far has been a bit of a pain in the butt, so I am hoping that Mother Nature will hold off on her tantrums and give us just three days of nice weather with no rain!! As always, I am hoping to spend some relaxing time during the Fair so I can take in some of the entertainment

The rides in the Midway I absolutely won’t be utilizing but I do enjoy watching the children as they jump from one ride to another ride; it’s a blast to see their happy faces full of excitement. The Vermilion Ag Society along with their volunteers has always done a beautiful job organizing all the events which are jam-packed with livestock

As for us adults, I think it is important for us to remember that even though it is a weekend meant for fun, we all need to take care and caution with how much we drink and keep it planted solidly in our minds not to drink and drive. No one wants a DUI or death on their hands. Enjoy the weekend with your friends and loved ones, make memories that will last a lifetime and above all else stay safe. OBITUARY Madeleine Friesen

Madeleine was born on November 5, 1925 and spent her early years growing up on a homestead near Frenchman Butte, SK. With few close neighbors and all her relatives either in Ireland or eastern Canada, playtime was spent outdoors, using her imagination and learning about wildlife and nature…with her dog beside her as her closest friend. However, when she was 6 years old her baby brother, Bob, was born. This brought her much joy and her love for him and her role as big sister remained with her all through life. When her family moved to Lloydminster, Madeleine was able to finish high school. Having inherited a thirst for learning and love of books from her dad, she decided to take training as a registered nurse. While waiting to get into the Nursing Program Madeleine worked on a ranch in the foothills of Alberta. There her love for cattle and ranching also grew. This was always a treasured time in her life. She often shared experiences with us of things that happened there. While in training at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, Sk, she met Harold Friesen and after she graduated, they were married on May 16, 1951. In 1955 Harold left his trucking business and Madeleine left nursing to focus on farming. Thus, they bought the farm south of Vermilion. A deciding factor on this location was a school just ½ mile away. (No 3 ½ mile walk for her children!) Here they worked side by side raising cattle and kids. The farm has remained in the family, now operated by Denise and Ralf Jonas and family under the ranch name, “Silver Shadow Charolais”. Although Madeleine never went back to formally working as an R.N., her medical training and knowledge remained invaluable in assisting with neighborhood medical emergencies and health issues and also played a strong influence in the health of the cattle. A love for our Creator and a desire that her children grow up knowing God and his standards led Madeleine to a personal study of the Bible. As a result, she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1963. She lived her life faithful to her beliefs and with a deep conviction that one day our Creator’s purpose for the earth would be fulfilled and true peace realized. Madeleine’s love for family was always evidenced by actions. When a stroke confined Harold to the nursing home, Madeleine faithfully visited him every day. For some time this meant driving the 22 miles back and forth to town. In time she moved off the farm to be close to the nursing home where she lived until Harold passed away. In 2008, with the help of family and many dear friends, we were able to build her a little house and welcome her back to the farm. She fondly referred to it as “the house that love built”. Many happy hours were spent at her kitchen table visiting her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and watching the farm activities. She enjoyed seeing the garden growing in front of her house and loved to see the many birds that came to her feeders. She never lost interest in what was happening with the cattle and all the people involved. With wonderful care and assistance of family and friends she was able to stay in that house the rest of her life. We look forward to welcoming Madeleine back to the Paradise earth where both humans and animals will enjoy peace and our world will be a place without pain, sickness and death. Madeleine is survived by her children, Blake (Geri) Friesen of Canmore, AB, Grant (Rosalina) Friesen of Surrey, BC, Denise (Ralf ) Jonas, Marlene (Dave) Baryski both of Vermilion. Also grandchildren, Misty (Stephen) Mitchell, Mandy (Michael) Stratichuk, Shaun (Angela) Jonas, Erin (Brandon) Nagy, Alison (Stephan) Currie, Scott Jonas, Cristine (Abe) Pineda, Filrose, Mary Lou, Ace, Christian Friesen and great-grandchildren, Jakob, Lily, Sarah Mitchell, Jade, Jett Jonas, Cheyenne, Baruch Nagy and Crisabe Pineda.

Don’t let the little ones wander off by themselves; it can be pretty scary when you turn around and discover your child is on the missing list and it can be even more traumatic for them when they can’t

Flax contains special fiber related poly phenol antioxidants called lignans. The lignans found in flax are converted by our gut bacteria to produce balanced hormones, and reduce the risk of breast cancer, as well as a reduced risk of prostate, colon and ovarian cancer. Because flax helps to balance hormones, it is beneficial to menopausal women as well. Flax seeds are rich in a form of healthy omega 3 that is called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). ALA is beneficial for the hair, skin and nails. Flax seeds also contain protein with an amino acid panel that favours improved immune function, decreased tumor production and it is also anti fungal. Overall there

is an abundance of good reasons to add flax to our diets in moderation. You will notice that this recipe uses a banana peel. Banana peel are edible, just be sure it is organic and to wash it with both ends cut off. A banana peel has more nutrients than the banana, If the peel has a few brown spots on it, then thats even better. Bananas are high in pectin fiber and aid in movement through the digestive system. Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and potassium. A fouryear research study has shown that the high potassium content found in foods such as bananas help reduce blood pressure and the risk of stroke. Fair warning, these are very good, but don’t eat too many in the same day, as the fiber, the flax and the banana combo can have a laxative effect. Banana Flax Seed Muffins 3 ripe bananas 1 organic banana peel (optional) 3 eggs 1/4 cup water 1 cup ground flaxseed 4 tablespoons of coconut flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 4 packages stevia (single serving size) 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ginger 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts 1/2 cup raisins 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar Preheat the oven to 350 degree. As I have mentioned before, one of the things I love about local history is telling the tales of those who lived that history. Kings and queens are great, but the ordinary people who lived ordinary lives are the ones who really fascinate me. One of the benefits of writing this column is that I can explore those lives. This week, I am looking at the Walkers of Vermilion. Alice and Bill Walker were married in England on Jan. 29, 1921. They spent some time working on a large farm before they decided to take a leap and move to Canada. Setting sail with four other young individuals from Liverpool on March 20, 1925, they arrived in the Vermilion area on April 2, 1925. Their first experience with Vermilion was that of snow, which was only just starting to melt after the long winter. Upon their arrival in Vermilion, they

were put up in the Brunswick Hotel. It was there that they, strangely enough, smelled garlic for the first time. One interesting story related by Alice was that upon their arrival in North Battleford, a rough looking individual stopped them and asked them where they were going. They said Vermilion and he responded that he was going there too. This made them wonder about the community they were heading to. The following day after their arrival, they were taken out to the quarter-section of land they hoped to purchase by H. Hodgins. The site would be purchased through the Soldier Settlement Fund. On the property they saw the lone building, which was nothing but a one-room shack that contained a cook stove, two chairs and a table. In the cellar were several dead gophers and old rags. Alice was less than impressed. “We believed this place had to be the end of God’s Country. We returned to Vermilion immediately, really upset with what we had just encountered. Experienced as a sheepherder in England, Bill was able to get a job on a

dairy farm in the area. In 1926, the couple found out the land farmed by the Reid family had become vacant. They bought the farm and found that only 75 acres were broken, with the rest just brush and river hay. The couple bought four horses, a gang plow and several other implements. They also hauled lumber from Vermilion to build a small house and barn. By the time they finished, it was starting to get cold. The first crop for the couple was excellent, and more and more land was broken

each year. On May 20, 1932, they had a son named William. He would eventually marry Mary Stewart in 1957 and go on to farm the land his parents had owned. Suggestions for columns or questions? Fossil Rub At The Vermilion Public Library

Sheila Heit Programs Coordinator of the Vermilion Public Library presented a Fossil Rub Activity with two sessions on July 25. Fossils were on display for the children to feel and examine and pass around. 6 fossil casts came from the University of Alberta, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and included fossil ferns, trilobites, and a fossil fish. Heit explained and asked the children questions about their knowledge of the various fossils that are found. She described how fossils have been created, one being an example of when a fish dies and goes to bottom

of the water, what is left is bones and it is then gradually covered by sand and mud and become rocks in the sediment, then eventually (millions of years!) as the ground shifts and the earth changes they may be exposed for us to find. Other fossils Heit had to show the children were various pieces of Petrified wood. She went on to explain about Pine tree resin which is where some whole insects have been trapped and now are found in what is called Amber. Coal and oil are other fossils, so that is why we call oil a fossil fuel. All the children had fun participating in this fun, learning and doing program.

Eating Healthy During Barbecue Season

Did you know that barbecues can include healthy foods and still taste great? Here are some ideas to get you started: Meat: Look for lean cuts of meat or poultry without skin. Grill for 6-7 minutes per side. Kabobs: Cut up colour ful vege tables such as bell peppers, onions, zucchini, mushrooms, and tomatoes and cook them on a kabob stick. Conservatives Call On Trudeau Liberals To Reverse Harm Done To Canada’s Natural Resource Workers At Ministerial Conference

Lakeland, AB – Shannon Stubbs, Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, issued the following statement on Minister Sohi attending the Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference in Cranbrook, British Columbia: “This week, Minister Sohi has the oppor tunit y to listen to his provincial counterparts instead of ignoring the continued calls of the Premiers to cancel the Liberals’ job killing carbon ta x, reverse the anti-resource and anti-pipeline Bill C - 69, end the oil export ban Bill C-48, and give back power over economic development to the North that the Liberals removed in Bill C-88. “If Prime Minister Trudeau’s Liberals are serious about making Canada’s energy and mining sectors competitive, Minister Sohi would commit to imme-

diately scrapping Bill C-69 and axing the carbon tax in front of his provincial and territorial partners this week. But Prime Minister Trudeau’s Liberals won’t, because they always put the special interests of a small group of anti-resource and anti-energy activists ahead of the hundreds of thousands of women and men who work in Canada’s natural resource sectors. “There is no region of this country that the Liberals’ anti-resource development agenda has not harmed: from offshore drilling in Atlantic Canada, to oil and gas development in the North, to mining in Quebec, Ontario and BC, and oil and gas development across Western Canada. The Liberals imposed new taxes, increased redtape, created uncertainty and chaos for project developers, all at the cost of good-paying Canadian jobs - putting Canada at a disadvantage against

international competitors. “The Liberal plan to kill Canada’s resource industries is no surprise. Pr i m e M i n i s ter Tr u d eau h a s b e e n open about his plan to ‘phase-out’ the oil and gas sector, and feels the need to apologize to his international billionaire friends for Canada’s environmentally and socially responsible natural resources. “The Liberals rammed through a carbon tax that makes new mines and resource development in rural and remote communities less competitive. The ‘no more pipelines’ Bill C-69 kills jobs, drives away investment, and already cost our economy billions. Bill C- 48 blocks Western Canadian oil from international markets, while doing nothing to stop foreign imported oil from countries with terrible environmental and human rights records. The Liberals also prohibited resource

development on wide swaths of northern land - without consultation and without warning. “Canada’s Conservatives will always stand with struggling families who rely on Canada’s natural resource jobs. Conservatives will scrap the ‘no more pipelines’ Bill C-69, axe the carbon tax, and give certainty to the private sector to get pipelines built. Conservatives are proud of Canada’s world class production of natural resources, have a plan to get Canadian resources to global markets, and will finally help hard working Canadians to get-ahead.”

way through town to the fair grounds. We are fortunate to have our homegrown RCMP return to lead the parade. Back by popular demand is laser tag and the bouncy house. New this year is the obstacle course for all ages. Wrist bands will be sold for $5 for individuals who want to take part in the laser tag and obstacle course—no limit to the number of times you take part. At 12:30 p.m., presentations are made to winners of the exhibits and parade, as well as the announcement of the volunteer of the year in memory of Denis McCormack. The Clandonald Seniors start the bingo on the grounds at 12:30 p.m. At 1 p.m., individuals get to tr y their skills in the watermelon contest. Children can tr y their luck in finding money in the goldmine and take part in the children’s races at 1:30 p.m. and the tractor pedal pushers at 2 p.m. The Prairie Dogs are back on stage at 1:30 p.m. Jesse Lewis’ magic show mixes illusion, music, theatre, comedy and hilarious audience participation to create entertainment experiences for the whole family. The day ends with the mutton busting starting at 4 p.m. There is always a surprise with what other animals may show up in the pen. Hope to see you at the fair. Communities In Bloom Garden Party

With the weather cooperating the Communities in Bloom in conjunction with the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce held a garden party at the Town Hall Park on July 17 instead of their annual garden tours. “We wanted to showcase the thriving downtown core and new businesses,” said Communities in Bloom member Kim McMinis. Throughout the evening at tend ees had the opportunity to purchase a beef on a bun for $5 and a piece of strawberry shortcake topped with fresh strawberries from Cruther’s Berry farm for an additional $5 while listening to local entertainment by Donna Eyben, Kerri Pullyblank, and Shane Thomas. Also in attendance at the party offering items for sale were Vermilion Commu-

nity Art Club, Vermilion Quilters Guild, Vermilion Pottery Guild and woodworking from Paul Yaceyko. Three draws for the garden competition was also made with each winner receiving a $50 gift certificate from either F’Laura n Company Greenhouse, Lawn and Gardens or Home Hardware. Four local businesses Uniquely U Styles, Vermilion Jewellers, Elevations and the Men’s Den also offered specials for the occasion. “This is our special fundraising event for the year and would like to thank the Town for being our host and for supplying the chairs, tables, and the piano. For some Wild West historical entertainment, you can watch the Border Cowboy Mounted Shooters as they shoot it out at the Vermilion Fair July 26 - 27. Impressive shows of accuracy, shooting black powder blanks at balloon targets while riding timed patterns will

take place on July 26, from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and July 27, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Lakeland College Arena. The mounted shooting finals will take place on July 27, at the grandstand at 3 p.m. Both men and women aged youth to senior are actively involved in this fastpaced sport. Safety is a key to the sport as competitors on horseback use revolvers, pistols, or double-barreled shot-

Alberta-born Actor Set To Film Movie In Vegreville And Surrounding Area This Summer

Submitted W r i t t e n a n d d i r e c t e d b y Tr o y Ruptash (formerly of Vegreville, AB), who played the real Don Draper on AMC’s Mad Men, They Who Surround Us (TWSU) honours Ukrainian settlers and their culture. From the forests of Ukraine, where the UPA struggles to keep the Ukrainian identity alive to the rich farmland of the Canadian Prairies, TWSU is a story of intergenerational trauma, where the past haunts a young Alberta farmer who is dealing with incredible grief after the sudden the loss of his wife. “ T h ey W h o S ur r o u n d Us te l l s a power ful stor y, one that I think will re s o nate w i t h m any p e o p l e,” s ai d Ruptash. “Cultural Identity, connecting to one’s roots, mental health, grief, loss and resilience are all themes found in this story.” Ruptash, who is based in Los Angeles, will also act in the movie. Free acting workshops are also expected to take place, where extras may be discovered. T h e pr o d u c t i o n te a m for T WSU i n c l u d e s S a n d y a n d G r a nt W i l d e, as executive producers and awardwinning producer Rosanne Milliken (all formerly of Vegreville, AB).

The idea for the movie originated after Ruptash noticed that Ukrainians and Ukrainian culture are extremely under represented in the film industry. Af ter a fateful trip to Ukraine in Nov. 2018, and the discovery of family members he did not know existed, Ruptash returned home inspired to finish the script based on his incredible journey. “I’ve been working in the film and television industry for close to 30 years with some amazing experiences and opportunities, but nothing compares to coming back to Vegreville to tell the story of my ancestors,” said Ruptash. “Having this opportunity to give back to the community that has supported me all these years has filled me with a deep sense of meaning and purpose.” Casting is currently being final ize d an d Ru pt as h i s al so wor k ing with costume designer, Deidre Hackman and Sundance composer Craig Richey. Ruptash will be hosting free acting workshops in the latter par t of July and early August in Vegreville, for both adults and youth with all levels of experience. Anyone interested in learning more about acting and the film industry is welcome to sign up to participate.

Over 100 people attended the Vermilion Heritage Museum’s Fundraiser on July 21, and had the opportunity to meet Stephen Mills. His family set up a camera and offered keep sake photos for a donation. Local Youth Excel At Big Junior Shows In Olds And Calgary

Local youth participated and were very successful while attending Junior Shows in Olds and Calgary last week. Riley Pashulka, Taylor Pashulka, Meagan Krys, and Mathew Trefiak attended. Overall, there were 220 head of cattle, 60 head of sheep, and 186 juniors aged 9-20. Riley and Taylor won many awards, scholarships and even a trip. All four won scholarships from the Calgary Stampede out of 180 juniors that attend across Western Canada. Riley and Taylor previously won trips to Fort Worth Texas and Sydney Australia.
