Wild and flashy entertainment captivated thousands of people during the Colonial Days Fair in Lloydminster from July 10 - 13. T h e fa ir b e g a n w i t h t h e p ar ad e on July 10, and children were later ent hr alle d with a mi d way, a lot of games and activities, and a petting zoo. Throughout the week, spectators enjoyed the livestock and agricultural shows including a heifer classic, all bred beef, classic steer stake, light horse, team sorting, draft horse halter, interprovincial draft horse pull, draft horse hitch, a gymkhana, team

roping, sheep show, and miniature travelled to attend the show. Closing ered to watch an impressive fireworks horse show. the fair on July 13, the audience gath- show. Visitors enjoyed sampling fair food as well and seeing the many vendors at the tradeshow. The crowd roared through grandstand performances of monster trucks, bulls and bikes, and a demolition derby which were easily a few of the highlights. Musical enter tainment scheduled included lively outdoor performances by Steve Page & Band, Prism & Sweeney Todd, Aaron Goodvin, and Trooper. Cannabis Is On Its Way!

After being delayed from an AGLC license suspension within days of opening last fall, cannabis retailer YSS Corp. announced that it received their licence for their Vermilion location on July 8. The Canad a wide shor tage that followed legalization in October of 2018 was the cause of the suspension, but people in the community are growing excited and beginning to jump for joy as this will be the first cannabis retailer in Vermilion. In addition, YSS will be adding locations in Lloydminster and Vegreville. “The supply shortage has been alleviated to where we can finally open that store. Every town will need a cannabis retailer in order to properly block out the black market so it’s a huge opportunity for your region. I have been to Vermilion a couple of times during the construction phase and inspection, and

we love the location! On social media we see the most questions from Vermilion, and it seems like the community is excited for us to open. Not only will we of fer immediate access to legal cannabis, but customer service interaction with knowledgeable sales staff. We encourage discovery and offer the opportunity for people to learn new things while providing guidance. In our other locations, people coming in enjoy having a wide selection of product types. In our new locations, we look forward to continuing to provide a high level of customer service within the cannabis industry. Vermilion is definitely a priority for us. This week the Vermilion Voice celebrates its 15th anniversar y. During those years our staff has been invited to come cover your many events and in doing so we have had the opportunity to be included in each of your memories made. For the second half “Tomorrows Dreams” I interpret it as the hopes and dreams for the paper in the future. For

me, it is my hope and dream that the newspaper will flourish as it has for the last 15 years; and seamlessly grow with the times as we continue to provide you our readers the best and most accurate news in our community and surrounding areas. Each year more and more groups and businesses ask us to cover their events and wouldn’t it be amazing if distance and time would not be one of our biggest restrictions, because all of your events are important to us. T h e Ve r m i l i o n Vo i c e h a s b e e n committed over the last 15 years to serve our communities to the best of

our ability and we thoroughly enjoy every second of each and every one of your events. We would like to take this time to thank all of you for inviting us to your events. Backwards And Forwards

So perhaps that is a big time metaphor for life…you can think all you want about quickly getting out of being stuck, but slowly and surelyis what generally does the trick for you. Be patient with the steps back and ahead…and things will eventually fall into place. So, it is that the last couple weeks have been spent on a long anticipated trip we never could seem to manage to pull off to go out to the Sunshine Coast to visit my wife’s Uncle Ken’s place near Powell River, British Columbia. A celebration of life with her relatives to remember her Great Grandma and matriarch of the Jackson clan was the reason things finally got unstuck and the timing and plans came together. yours truly is that for the overwhelming bias of travel around and within so many areas of Alberta, B.C. has been one of the destinations I have not had many oppor tunities to do: living on the eastern side of Alberta tends to make B.C. a bit longer jaunt. Now the next summer in ’82 after the big fly-in fishing trip Dad took my brother and I on, we went on an extended road trip down the Yellowhead to Kitimat (near Prince Rupert) to visit his sister Charlotte and then from there all the way down through the heart of B.C to visit his Aunt Dorothy near Vernon. Most of my first impressions of B.C. towns and landscape came on that first long jour ney d own win d ing narrow t wo lane highways, me navigating with a map and writing out a trip log and my brother beside me practicing Rubik’s Cube solutions (it being the ‘IN’ fad at the time) pretty much the entire way there and back home. I got to do one of my first bucket list like things that trip in climbing a mountain near Terrace, even if it just about ended me for good on a 100M fingernail saving slide on ice down an avalanche ravine. In doing the driving this time, I managed to relive my dislike for those narrow mountain

cliff top nausea inducing highways and reacquaint myself with those B.C. gas prices that seemed, relatively speaking, the same as they were in ’82 (thank you trip log notes). Not sure I would say another bucket list item got fulfilled on this trip but kayaking on the Pacific Ocean beside otters, seals, and bald eagles was pretty special, and I got to do down some roads and see places I had not been to for so long and to see how much things have changed since that very special trip with Dad. So the trip was a bit of the forward and backward for sure…and on that note my life outside writing has gone forward and the time I have for sitting down putting words to paper much tougher to find. I’ve taken over as the President of TriCounty Soccer District for the time being (right next door to Lakeland) and those duties have become my focus. But looking backward at my Vermilion roots, and writing about it, was (and is) a great gig to have and I want to thank ever yone at the Voice for the opportunity that both my Dad Franklin and myself have been given and all the words and encouragement I got in doing it. It’s time to paddle off to that next thing…at least for the time being.

To us, you were very SPECIAL! We miss you more each day. The saddest day in our lives was the day you passed away. They say memories are golden, well maybe that is true. We never wanted memories GRAN, we only wanted you. Forever loved and sadly missed by grandchildren, Lori, Alysha, Breanne, Joel, Mark, Darcie & Shauna

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberries are just coming into season, so now is the time to enjoy their great taste and health benefits. You will not believe how easy this is to make. It’s one of those recipes that if you try it once you will be hooked. What’s not to love about this super easy cake t o p p e d w i t h swe e te n e d w h i p p e d cream and fresh strawberries? Shortcake has European origins, going back to the time of Shakespeare, and it is even mentioned in one of his plays. This British desert, would go well with a spot of tea, hot or iced. The term “short” in baking refers to the tenderness of the baked goods. A “short ” cake or pastry is considered to be very tender. Strawberries are high in beneficial antioxidants and Vitamin C. Researchers have found that strawberries help regulate blood sugar. Three servings a week of strawberries have been shown to exhibit anti-inflammation properties. If you are allergic to strawberries, as so many people are, then you can easily substitute fresh blueberries. This is a wonderful desert for summer and to enjoy during strawberry or blueberry season. Strawberry Shortcake 2 cups flour, all purpose is fine 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 & 1/2 cup heavy cream ( I use whipping cream) 1 1/2 lbs Strawberries Whipped Cream Topping

1 & 1/2 cup whipping cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons sugar Pre heat the oven to 400 degrees. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar and mix well. Add the cream to the flour mixture. Do not over mix or the shortcake will be tough and hard. Lightly grease the bottom of an 8”x8” pan with butter. Pat the batter into an 8”x8” pan. Bake

at 400 degrees for 17 - 20 minutes, depending on your oven. My oven took 18 minutes. Turn the whole cake onto a cutting board to cool. To make the whipped cream: In a large glass bowl combine the whipping cream, vanilla and sugar. Whip until the cream forms stiff peaks. Do not over whip as the cream will separate into butter and whey with excessive beating.

To assemble the strawberry Shortcake: Cut the cake into 9 squares. Split open a square and place the bottom on a desert plate. Cover the bottom of the cake with fresh sliced strawberries and a generous dollop of whipped cream. Replace the top and add more sliced strawberries and another dollop of whipped cream. Garnish with a strawberr y slice. Repeat these steps for additional deserts.

The story of the McGinnis family is one of two parts in Vermilion. The first part is that of James and Annie McGinnis, who arrived in the Vermilion area in 1914 from Quebec. They would live in both Quebec and Bowtell, farming in both areas until 1935 when they decided to retire and live with their daughter Helen. Only one year after retiring, James passed away. The next part of their story begins with Aubrey, their son, and his family

of four who would move to the Vermilion farm in 1938. Aubrey had worked as both a fireman and engineer for the CNR during the previous years of The Great Depression. The first year for the family on the farm was a rough one. For a time during the winter of 1938-39, the family didn’t know if they were going to have anything to eat but bread, milk and eggs, and that was if the hens laid eggs. The following year, Aubrey went back to work. He spent 12 hours a day, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. hauling hay. The family would milk the cows and look after the chicken through the year and the help of the children got them through another year.

In 1942, Aubrey went to work at a nearby oil field and spent five years studying to get his second-class engineer papers. In 1943, a new son, Laurence, was welcomed into the family. A music al family, ever yone was involved in the local dances including Aubrey and his son Wes and oldest daughter Marion. Their oldest son Ronald joined the orchestra in 1946 playing the banjo. In 1949, Mario, Noreen and Patricia all left home and moved into Edmonton. The following year, the family lost their home to fire, losing everything. He will be forever loved by his wife, Beverlie Smith of nearly 60 years; 1934 - 2019 children Brent (Debra) Smith, Brian Smith, Scott (Krystal) Smith and Terri (Paul) Leedell; 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; brothers Johnson Smith, Lorne Smith and Leslie Smith; sisters Betty Adams, Evelyn MacKay, and Karen Dickinson. He was predeceased by 3 brothers Earle, Fred, and Eric Smith. Richard spent 11 years in the RCAF as an Aero Engine Mechanic before going farming in the Kitscoty area with his wife Bev, in 1965. They began Be-Rich Farms and raise Charolais cattle and Border Collie dogs. A Celebration of Life was held on July 9 at the Kitscoty Community Hall.

Herzog Autobody, Owner Mike Donkin, has been repairing vehicles at the same location for over 25 years. “Change was a necessity dealing with insurance companies; they wanted to deal with banner companies and not mom and pop shops,” said Donkin. He and his wife, Lorena have owned Herzog’s/CARSTAR since 2010. They began working with CARSTAR at the

beginning of this year, and were officially branded at the end of May. They did not sell the business, but partnered with CARSTAR and have since noticed a few perks they can offer customers. They are proud to bring in Canadian technicians for paintless dent repair and offer a nationwide warranty. “For people moving, the warranty follows them wherever they go. We love serving our community, and enjoy when customers return because they were pleased with the work we had done in the past,” said Donkin. Submitted On July 4, the Vermilion Rotary Club presented $25,000 as their final installment to the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation’s Living Well Capital Campaign. In February of 2017 Rotary originally committed a $75,000 donation to the Living Well Campaign to modernize the Vermilion Valley Lodge. Knowing they had five years to complete their pledge, they later amended their commitment to $100,000. “We are thrilled to have made our final instalment (already) and have the opportunity to invest in our local seniors and the provision of an updated, modernized home option within our community. This is the largest donation our club has fulfilled in its 64 years!” said committee chair, Brenda Lee. “Our initial plan was to pay it over five years but we are very happy to have paid off the full amount in less than three years due

to the generosity of our community. It was support of things like the Harvest Gala, the Garage Sale and the Canada Flag Project that allowed us to complete our commitment early. It all comes back to how much support we get from our community that enables us to in turn continue supporting the community. I think a large reason we are supported so well with our events is that people recognize that we are a service club; we raise funds to support local projects whether youth through scholarships, music festival, hockey; or structural ones like at the Valley Lodge, or inclusive playground at St. Jerome’s School. Vermilion Fair - Livestock Shows And Ag Programming

Vermilion Agricultural Society Submitted

The 2019 Vermilion Fair will showcase everything agriculture between a selection of programs from July 25 – 27. The Vermilion Agricultural Society is a non-profit community organization that preserves and promotes our rural heritage and community spirit with the livestock shows and agricultural focus

being an integral part of that commitment and the Fair. A programming change for 2019 will have the Junior Equine show break for the parade. This is a change we are pleased to implement as it allows our junior riders the chance to see the parade. To accommodate this change fair attendees will need to be aware that the chariots will run at 5 p.m. on Thursday. They will

return to their regular schedule of 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. This year, the Vermilion Fair and Heavy Horse Show are proud to introduce Shire and Drum Horse classes to the list of classes offered during the fair. Catch the Heavy Horse Hitch Show in front of the Grandstand on Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. Cattle Shows include the Open, Junior, Jackpots, and Pen shows. For 2019 we are excited to be hosting the Canadian National Junior Shorthorn Show. The show will run in the beef ring for the conformation classes and the skills competition will be held at the sheep ring. Watch the Sheep Show consisting of the Flock, Pen of 3, Junior and Open Shows in the Sheep Barn on Thursday and Friday, with sheep shown by local 4-H members and area

producers. On Saturday, July 27, the final day will be filled with lots of great agricultural programming starting with Gymkhana which will run at the Lakeland College Riding Arena, the Junior Heavy Horse Show, and Jackpot Stock Dog Trials. The Stock Dogs will be held at the sand ring this year and will run all day. Senior & Open Equine Show will be on in the Equine Ring all day. The Poultry Show starts at 10 a.m. in the Heritage Pavilion showcasing various breeds of chickens, turkeys, ducks, and more. Vermilion Continuing Care residents have been routinely picking weeds in the flower beds and were thankful for one another’s assistance and company. Delorese Younger said that when there is weeding to do that Sophie Kochan assists her by pushing her wheel chair and noted that not many 91 year old ladies are well enough to pull weeds. “Being outdoors and getting your hands dirty is good therapy,” said Younger. “I saw this lady picking weeds and I have a bad back but it’s been that way for years. Field scouting can lead to more successful crop production. “There are numerous factors that can impact a developing crop,” says Mark Cutts, crop specialist, Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “Scouting can help producers understand what is occurring in their fields and help them make proper management decisions.” At this time of the growing season, h e s ay s t h a t f i e l d s c o u t i n g c a n provide information on the effectiveness of herbicide applications. “Scouting after a herbicide applic ation will show pro du c er s if the weeds were adequately controlled. In the majorit y of cases, produc ers will find that the chemicals have worked. However in cer tain situations, field scouting may show the weeds weren’t properly controlled and producers can start to evaluate what might have caused the problem.” A difference in the pattern of weed escapes can indicate poor per formance of a herbicide due to environmental conditions or that herbicide resistant weeds may be present. “ If the weeds that esc aped the

herbicide application are found throughout the entire field, it can point to limited herbicide effectiveness due to environmental conditions such as low temperatures,” he adds. “ However, if the weeds are found in isolated patches, this may be a herbicide resistance issue. If unsure of the cause, contact an agronomist or chemical company representative to discuss the possible causes of the weed escapes.” Scouting of crops at this time also allows producers to assess disease development. “For example,” says Cutts, “Barley leaf diseases such as scald and net blotch move from the older leaves to the newer leaves as the growing season progresses. If leaf diseases are present and environmental conditions remain favourable for disease development, a fungicide application may be necessary once the crop has reached the flag leaf stage.
