The J.R. Robson School’s graduating class of 2019 were joined by staff, dignitaries, and their families to celebrate their graduation on June 28. This year’s theme was, ‘Last steps together, first step apart.’ Dressed in their finest, students were presented their certificates and Principal Lindsey Bates reminded students of older technologies and conveyed that if a person doesn’t know what their future looks like, that it is okay. “I hope each and every one of you contributes to the world positively and in your own special way. I wish you all the best, “ said Principal Bates. MLA Garth Rowswell congratulated the students on their milestone achievement and said, “It is my priviledge to bring congratulations to you. Your chosen theme smartly embraces both retrospection and the future. This can be a daunting time full of challenges but it can also be full of excitement. When you venture out into the world the things you learned here

at J.R. Robson will assist you to reason, assess options, and make decisions that will smooth the path.” Both Councillor for the Town of Vermilion Greg Barr, and Buffalo Trail Publi c S c hools B oard Trustee Jim King noted being J.R. Robson Alumni. The 2019 valedictorian was Emily Elder. In a tribute to the teachers, Raelene Lupul said, “We appreciate everything you have done to help us get to this point. You taught us with patience and kindness, and the life skills and lessons are something we will remember. Also, thank you for making sure that our last year was a memorable one!” In his reply, Mr. Woodward said, “It has been a pleasure watching you mature and grow. Children and adults had tons of fun during the Canada Day celebrations in Vermilion on June 28. Communities in Bloom hosted a Pancake Breakfast at the Fire Hall to kick things off. Throughout the morning and afternoon, several businesses joined in the fun by offering special tokens or promotional products. The Credit Union Parking was full of several children’s activities including the Library Book Sale,

VIBE offering smoothies, a bouncy house, Kerplunk, and Alberta Health Services with an obstacle course. The Town’s Beef on bun lunch was held between Craig’s Cornerstone and Long’s Value Drug Mart, and the annual Bucket Brigade was much enjoyed by participants and onlookers. Water splashed all around with teams hoping to fill their bucket first. The enthusiasm didn’t stop there. Over at Lakeland Mall, the St. Jerome’s student council hosted a dunk tank, and

a barbeque raffle. Both the students and competitors had a lot of fun. “We would like to thank the volunteers and McDonald’s Family Foods for helping out. This fundraiser helps support extracurricular needs including student council programming, guest speakers, and school spirit activities,” said Student Council President, Matt Beaudette. For the first time at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds as their new site, families continued to enjoy the fun on into the evening with a Show and Shine car show,

followed by Taste of Vermilion and beer gardens hosted by The Good Life Institute. There was a mix of cultural entertainment by dance schools in Vermilion; Celtic Jewel Irish Dance, Ukrainian Cultural Dancers, and Dance Impressions by Ryan. Following that, a colourful performance by the Cree Confederation awed the audience, and was followed by musical entertainment by ‘New Abnormal.’ Closing the evening, the outdoor movie, ‘Dumbo,’ and fireworks created a grand finale.

Butterscotch Rhubarb Pie

Calling all rhubarb lover s. L ate s pr ing and early summer is prime rhubarb season. Rhubarb is one of the first fruits available on the Canadian prairies and prairie cooks have come up with lots of ways to use it: there are rhubarb pies, rhubarb crisps, rhubarb jam, cobblers and cakes. While we think of rhubarb as a fruit it is actually classed as a vegetable. Several years ago, we lost our ver y old homesteaded patch of rhubarb to an army of ants that moved in, and they completely destroyed it from the roots, so now we have a new variet y of rhubarb on the farm that seems to be less tart than the previous one. Even if you do not grow rhubarb, you can usually pick some up at the

farmers market, as it is in season right now. Always remember that the leaves of the rhubarb plant are poisonous. Rhubarb is mildly laxative. Research shows that it may be beneficial for diabetes as it mimics the action of insulin, allowing the sugar to enter the cell, where it may be burned instead of circulating in the blood. Because of this positive action on insulin, I would like to try experimenting with rhubarb and stevia. Rhubarb is not a good food choice to be eaten frequently for those people that are prone to form oxalate kidney stones. Rhubarb can be easily frozen for later use by cutting it up into 1 inch pieces, blanching it for 1 minute and then rinsing it in cool water, patting dry and packaging it in plastic freezer bags. Rhubarb is also a good source of fiber, vitamin K, and vitamin C. Some of the best recipes are passed down in families or shared fr o m fr i e n d to fr i e n d. T h i s re c i p e

I tested it, with great results, and now I want to share it with you. Thank you so much Bonnie, who is the first person I have met with such a massive cookbook library. We defiantly share some same interests. The use of brown sugar in this recipe provid es a sof tening of the shar p rhubarb flavor, and the lattice top is so fun and pretty to make. I always like to use the younger thinner rhubarb, as I find it is more tender and less sour than the larger stalks. Beat the egg, add the sugar and the melted butter, cream, and flour. Stir in the rhubarb. Pour into an unbaked shell, and then cover with strips of pastr y to form a lattice. I sprinkled the top of the lat tice pastr y with a teaspoon of sugar, but that is optional. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes, and then at 350 degrees for 30 - 40 minutes. When I pulled this out of the oven, I felt so proud, and I looked forward to my family enjoying it, but not until I first tried a sliver. H e r e a r e s o m e a d d i t i o n a l t i p s: Because a fruit pie will sometimes bubble over, place the pie on a cookie sheet in the oven. If you use frozen rhubarb, the pie will be waterier. To combat this, add an additional two tablespoons of flour. Another tip to help prevent a soggy bot tom crust is to sprinkle the crust with 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar before adding in the rhubarb pie filling.

I never will. I’m quite sure that the store owners do not care. They have my money. But they have lost a customer. There was a time when customer satisfaction was a prime consideration for a retail store. No more. M any (m ost?) stores in town ho l d you hostage this way. Their thinking is that if a customer has no choice but to take a store credit you will be forced to continue doing business with them. Well a scoot to Lloydminster is an easy enough thing to do. Bucking Broncos And Organ Troubles At Devonia Lake

One interesting story from the school was regarding a church organ. There was a little church that had been moved through the area over time. During one picnic, a little organ was bought for the church. Services were held at this little church until 1914 when the First World War broke out. When the war was over, the organ was taken to the school since it

When writing about local history, especially related to school districts, there often isn’t too much to dive into. Sometimes though, you come across a school district that has plenty of unique stories to tell. Devonia Lake is one such district. Formed in 1919, the district was named by the Devon family, who put their name to the district. With the school district approved 3” wide version and ready to go, a school was built. Hubert would not give him the key saying it was not church property. The minister then began sending letters to others stating that the organ was church properly and should be ‘moved peaceably.’ The affair become heated and a meeting had to be held between those who wanted the organ to stay in the school and those who wanted to take the organ to Blackfoot. During one meeting, the minister told Hubert that he w a s

‘like the old lady who’d been baptized in the church, married in the church and expected to be buried in the church and it hadn’t cost her a cent.” Hubert countered with asking why they would want an organ that had been defiled by using it other than church music. Derek Bucharski Memorial Awards

Celebrating dedication and team spirit, the Vermilion Soccer Association hosted the 11th Annual Derek Bucharski Memorial Awards for U13 U19 players on June 24. Af ter losing their son who was a passionate and active member of the Vermilion Soccer Association in 2008, the Bucharski family continues to be a big supporter of soccer. According to President, Kristin Ward, players that have received the award in the past hold it near and dear to their hearts. â€œThe Bucharski family are wonderful ambassadors within the association. We appreciate everything they offer to players and families involved with soccer. They continue to support their grandchildren as well as every other child on the bench. With the awards being about the pure love of the spor t, spor tsmanship, showing growth, and being par t of a team, I think itâ€™s a pretty powerful ceremony because of the love and pride shown forth from the family,â€? said Ward. Cruthers Berry Farm’s new owners Tim and Janet Elliott are pleased to announce that berries are expected to be ready for picking the week of July 10. Since their arrival in April, they have planted 3,000 strawberry plants and are eager to begin the season. Their orchard offers five different types of saskatoons as well as raspberries, strawberries, Evans cherries, currants and fresh produce. Janet grew up in Vermilion and has known George Cruthers all her life. From Edmonton, Janet returned to pick berries at Cruthers almost every summer when visiting her parents. According to Tim, 15 years ago they were picking berries at Cruthers when Janet said, ‘It’s so beautiful; it’s like paradise,’ and it stuck with him.

“For me, coming from the city it’s like night and day; it’s nice and quiet, I love it!” said Tim. There is 25 years of George’s hard work here and he did a really nice job. He seeded the grass by hand, and maintained everything well,” said Tim. They have added on with the addition of two baby goats and liking them, they plan to eventually get more goats to tend some of the grass. She noted that the orchard is right on the edge of the Town of Vermilion, and they have enjoyed getting to know people as they stop in. Tim and Janet look forward to serving the community and surrounding areas, and hope to expand over the coming years. “George poured his whole life in to the orchard and so we have kept the same name and same phone number. He was here for 25 years and is still our friend so we enjoy when he comes

to visit. The bushes are just hanging with fruit, but the berries are not ready yet. We’ve had lots of rain which helps, and they are u-pick, but if required we can pick for people. It has been a lot of work, but it’s been fun! Berry picking can be a family experience with people of all generations taking part,” said Janet. The couple attended a course on berry cultivation with Alberta Agriculture, and they are part of Alberta Farm

Police Dog In Training

Community members enjoyed seeing Cst. Nick Doyle out for a walk with his potential police dog in training around downtown Vermilion on June 25. Cst. Doyle has been an RCMP officer for the past two and a half years in Vermilion. He would eventually like to become a police dog handler, and after one year is on his second puppy, Landon. Taking puppies from eight weeks old to over a year, they are trained for tracking and

aggression. “One thing is familiarization and socialization,” added Cst. Doyle. He went on to say that the 30 - 40 per cent of the puppies who are successful will go on to Police Dog Training in Innisfail. “Before I became a police officer I knew I wanted to be a dog handler. There is an RCMP contest for children to submit names, so the puppies are all named by the public,” said Cst. Doyle. According to Doyle, the RCMP does cover the cost of dog food, but he volunteers his time to do the training on his days of f. Whether focusing on the mundane, the magnificent, the tragic or the triumphant, many artists seek to present the world - objects, events, and their personal reflections regarding these to the viewer. In doing so they aim to make the viewer cognizant of such things and to affect their perceptions regarding what is depicted. The import of what is portrayed is accentuated by how it is represented. The elements of design as well as concerns

such as artistic style, medium choice and the actual size of art objects have significant effects on the meaning of a subject and the viewer’s reaction to it. Until the mid 1800s these roles of art — to present the world and affect the viewer’s perceptions of it - were primarily the domain of drawing and painting. The advent of photography introduced a new and extremely stimulating player to this field and this new medium had a tremendous impact on the art of painting. While photography tested painting, however, it also challenged itself and many photogra-

phers alleged that if their work was to be taken seriously as a new art form, rather than just some technological marvel, photography had to compete with painting and adopt its methodologies. Two painterly techniques which influenced the art of photography are those of chiaroscuro and tenebrism, dark-light compositional techniques used both to create form and for dramatic effect. Featuring works from the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the exhibition Life Lit Up explores how photographers in Alberta

have utilized the techniques of chiaroscuro and tenebrism in their works. Through their works these artists expose the wonder and beauty of the world around us. The exhibition Life Lit Up was curated by Shane Golby and organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program. The AFA Travelling Exhibition program is supported by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. This exhibition can be viewed at the Vermilion Public Library until July 15.

We wish Mrs. Kristen Clarke all the best as she heads north to Beaverlodge with her family and to Mr. Terry King, who came out of retirement for a year to provide excellent teaching for our students. Mr. MacMillan’s priority was for students to be successful in our school building, but more importantly to be successful citizens of the world. He would drive many kilometres a year to take students to leadership conferences, retreats, and sporting events. He always encouraged students to expand their horizons by attending national and international student conferences and traveling abroad with him on many school trips. We wish you all the best as you leave us to explore other ventures. You will be greatly missed, hard to replace and as you always say “Once a Spartan, Always a Spar tan”. May God bless each of you as you have blessed St. Jerome’s. Middle Level had a busy last week of school as they wrote their final exams from Thursday to Tuesday. On Wednesday they traveled to Lloydminster for their end of year trip to watch ”Toy Story 4” at the May Theatres. On Thursday, June 27 at 11 a.m., middle level students, staff, parents and families gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the students from grade six to eight during the 2018-2019 school year. Mr. Whelan was the MC for the celebration. Students were acknowledged for Most Improved, Honors (9 0%), Proficient (80%), Physical Education, French, Application, Christian Ethics, and the Spirit Award. Well the grade three students in Mrs. Martin’s/Mrs. McCormack’s room got to go to the Edmonton Zoo on Friday, June 21. When they arrived they participated in an “Endangered Species” tour. They got up close and personal with a rat, which are classified as extirpated animals as they are extinct in Alberta. They then visited some of the outside animals, the Arctic Wolf, the Siberian Tiger, the Snow Leopard, and “Lucy” the Asian Elephant. The students found out the difference between extinct, endangered, extirpated, threatened and low concern, seeing examples of each one. They learned that in lemur groups, the oldest female is the leader and the stinkiest males win the battles. The highlight of the trip was seeing the Red Pandas in their new pavilion, which just opened that morning. After a quick lunch the students toured a few more areas of the zoo, climbed and played tag at the beaver dam and rock structure. It was a great day and they were not rained on once. The elementary students have been participating in a variety of field trips this last week as they visited the Vermilion Museum, a day spent at their teacher’s house and swimming at the Vermilion Pool. The staff at St. Jerome’s wishes all of our students and their families a very relaxing, refreshing, safe summer holiday. Make memories, have adventures, connect with friends and families, and we will see you all back here on Tuesday, September 3.

Grade 1 students had another wonderful field trip to the Vermilion Provincial Park on June 21. Some of what they did and saw included dragonflies, earthworms, leeches and shrimp, Alberta wild roses, caterpillars, moths, nature walks, scavenger hunts, suspicious coyote tracks, beaver dams, animal paths, chlorophyll rubbings, playground fun, splash park, and mini golf. They had an endless amount of fun. It was a great way to end their year of learning in Grade 1. The Grade 2 classes had a fabulous day at the Ukrainian Village on June 21. They toured the historic buildings, talked to people from the past about their lives, and ate delicious food. They found some farm animals including pigs, sheep, and chickens, and even got a horse and wagon ride. One of the favorite places to visit was the school house, where they participated in a spelling lesson and learned just how strict the teachers were. Even though it was a little muddy, the rain held off until they were about to leave, so it was a great day. Also on June 21, the Grade 6 students travelled to Pleasantview Camp at Sandy Beach. They were put into small groups and were given the opportunity to participate in canoeing, archery, rock climbing, disc golf and ziplining. The homemade lunch that was served to them was stupendous. In the afternoon, the students swam in the pool and had the chance to go back to the zipline to try it again. Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped make this a magical day for these students. As Vermilion residents, we are so fortunate to have the Provincial Park right here in our town. On June 24, Grade 2, 3, and 6

Awesome games were played and delicious food was enjoyed. Even though June 25 started off on a cloudy, rainy note, it turned out to be a sunny afternoon for our track and field day. Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 kids partook in relay races, ball pass relay with beach balls, standing long jump, soccer kick, tail tag, frisbee toss and tugof-war. The older students participated in five events of their choice, choosing from high jump, long jump, shot put, soccer kick, and races from 50 m to 400 m. It was great to see all the parents and grandparents out watching. Our Accelerated Reading Celebration Day took place on June 26. At 10:45, we

gathered in the gym where we recognized all the clubs from this year – drama, art, pixel art, creative kids, spirit club, gamers club, volleyball, science fair, cross country running, hot lunch helpers, Grade 6 VIBE advisory, basketball, and milk monitors. Fat Cat attended and we were told that as a school we reached a total of 21 200 AR points. The top division 1 reader was Jonah Gould with 715.5 points, and Mya Jaremko was the division 2 top reader with 584.8 points. They each received a cheque from the Vermilion Credit Union. The top earners from each grade (receiving a swim pass each) were as follows: Grade 1 Spencer Katuski (drawn), Grade 2 Douglas Romeo (350.6 points), Grade 3 Jill Chmielewski-Tremblay (122.9 points), Grade 4 Asia Clark (256.2 points), Grade 5 Mercedes Tobin (367.0 points), and Grade 6 Matt Chmielewski-Tremblay

(432.7 points). After the assembly, we had our annual family picnic, with the weather cooperating wonderfully. In the afternoon we had Scottish storyteller, Callum Lykan, entertain our students. As well, we provided students who reached their AR goal with sundaes. VES had to say goodbye to the Grade 6 students on June 27 when they had their farewell ceremony. School Trustee Jim King and VES Principal Mr. Anhorn each gave inspirational speeches. The classes sang Humble and Kind, which was such as appropriate song. After the ceremony, juice and doughnuts were shared. Good luck in all your future endeavors, Grade 6! VES Grade 6 Farewell
