The degree of difficulty that will take you to a win can also buck you off,” said the announcer. Rain didn’t dampen the spirits at the 22nd Annual Lions-CNIB Golf Tournament held at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club on June 7. Fo r t h e f i r s t t i m e eve r, p a r t i c i pants were unable to golf due to the wet c onditions, but the remaind er of the event c arr ie d o n. C o mmu nity members were supportive of the cause and helping to benefit those with vision loss, with an estimated $6,000 raised. There were 51 hole sponsors and additional prize sponsors. “Over $110,0 0 0 has been raised since the tournament ’s inception,” said Cliff Rolheiser. Thank you The family of Robert (Bob) Snelgrove, Sr. would like to thank the staff of the Vermilion and Mannville Care Centers for their unfailing kindness and patience in caring for him these last years. Deep thanks to Dr. Steve West for serving as Master of Ceremonies at the celebrations of life for both Bob and, two years ago, for Margaret Snelgrove. Thanks to Bob’s nephew Keith McDonald, who assisted in telling Bob’s life story. Thanks also to Crossroads Funeral Chapel, Char Young, the Vermilion Ag Society, and to family and friends who honoured us by attending his celebration of life on June 5. We were comforted with stories of friendship and adventure going back through Bob’s days from Mary Lake and Derwent to travel across the world. The Vermilion Tim Hortons location held a Camp Day celebration in collaboration with others across the country on June 5. Proceeds from coffee purchases, bracelet purchases, and donations all went to support children; giving them the opportunity to attend a summer camp. New this year, customers had the opportunity to round up their orders to the nearest dollar if they wished as an additional way to help support Camp Day. “The Town of Vermilion would like to thank Tm Hortons for putting on Camp Day. The volunteer experience is amazing. It gives you a whole new perspective, seeing the way peo ple move
around and understanding what goes into making your breakfast. It is a lot of hard work and amazing doesn’t even come close to describing the people; they are so fun, and you are going to get quality service. It is like a mini family. Camp Day is a great cause supporting families who are unable to afford it. Camp is the number one experience that young individuals can have to experience the outdoors and making friends, with activities that are not available in their home or classroom,” said Town of Vermilion Councillor, Greg Barr. “We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and assistance. Lakeland College Vermilion held two Convocation ceremonies on June 7. T h e L l oyd m i n s ter c a m p u s h e l d their celebration on May 31, and all together, 863 graduates made up the class of 2019 as well as 234 apprenticeship graduates. Kirby’s Barbeque Birthday Bash!

A Barbeque Birthday Bash was held for Kirby Whitlock on June 4, at Christina’s Home Furnishings in Vermilion, with $833 in proceeds going to support 13-year-old Phoenix Wilson. Wilson has been accepted to compete as par t of Team Canada’s tap team in Germany in November. The international competition has only selected 24 participants aged 13 - 18 to be on the junior team. “I’m so excited! It ’s such a great opportunity for someone my age, and I will be one of the youngest on the team. Considering that Canada is so big, and there are only 24 people in my age group, I feel pretty privileged to

be able to dance with people from all across Canada,” said Phoenix Wilson. S h e h ad prev i o u s l y h an d e d o u t let ters in the communit y and Kirby Whitlock immediately chose to host a barbeque instead of a cash donation in suppor t. When the date was chosen, his bir thday was selected, and he said, “It ’s nice to see youth stepping up to put the effort in to do a barbeque.” He is looking for people to help throughout the summer with Christina’s Community Barbeques. In ad dition, three more dancer s from Vermilion, Jett Wilson, Aaralyn Tupper, and Asia Clark will also be competing in Germany in November as part of the children’s team. Well that is a wrap! We have had our 4-H achievement day and sale. We would like to extend a huge thank you to our sponsors, supporters, parents and everyone that helped make our day a success. June 2, 2019 we had our club achievement day at the Myrnam Arena. All the members from the 4-H club showcased their projects. We had the Scrapbooking club scrapbooks on showcase for all to see, Thank you to Megan Saruk our scrapbook leader for helping the girls create these wonderful memory-filled books. The Baking club made a bunch of treats for Achievement day showcasing delicious cookies. Thank you to Lyndsey Pashulka our baking leader for teaching us to bake cookies, pies and many other delicious treats, and for constantly reminding us to wash our hands after tasting the batter! Snowmobiling projects were showcased as well as all the events that they attended and what they enjoyed about all the time spent on their snowmobiles. Thank you to Sheldon Tomusiak the snowmobile leader for reminding the members about snowmobile safety and
how to properly handle their machines. Thank you to our Beef and General Leader Jennifer Jacula for all her hard work organizing, her countless hours making sure everything went smoothly and being our biggest fan throughout the show and sale. Another mention to our assistant leaders Tanya Saskiw and Lyndsey Pashulka for the hugs of support and high fives along the way. steers weighed up and see what their rate of gain was. We had fun getting that Swine project to the scale but he weighed in at a whopping 343lbs. The pig, Chris P. Bacon, will fill someone’s freezer! We had our District beef meeting after weigh-in, finishing up a few last minute things. When all the animals were fed and watered the district kids got together for a game of bean bag toss and snacks. To me this is the best part of 4-H getting to spend time with other members creating great friendships and memories. Thank you to the Myrnam Ag Society for supporting our club and letting us use the arena for all of our club events all year long. We have our club wind up and sponsor appreciation supper on June 25 and we are taking a club fun trip to the Edmonton Zoo on June 15. I have enjoyed my year as club reporter, see you next year!

Air Plants

Did you know that there are plants that live without soil, and only need water once a week? They are called air plants and the technical name is Tillandsias. They are from the Bromelaid family, the same plant family as orchids. There are over 500 varieties of air plants, and they are adorable. A quick check on Instagram will show you how popular they are, along with many other house plants. Their modern look, makes them a
current favourite among interiors designers. You can pop air plants on the top of a vase, on a wreath indoors, or in a Zen mini garden made of smooth rocks. As you may know, adding live plants to your home adds life and color. Air plants are remarkable at cleaning the air, in fact that is how they live, by constantly pulling in the air around them. Air plants originate in warm areas, by living on other trees or plants, and never themselves root into soil. Air plants will flower, but only once in their life. Once they flower, they will begin developing pups, which are smaller plants, and when the pups are a third of the size

of the parent plant, they can be removed and started as new air plants. The pups can also be left on to create a larger plant. Depending on the variety, air plants can be a half an inch in size, all the way up to three feet in size. You may be wondering how to care for an air plant? It is pretty straight forward, simply dunk it under room temperature water for 5 – 20 minutes once a week. Once a week is generally enough, but it will depend on how dry the air is. If the plant gets overly dry, and the tips start to brown, put it in a sink of water overnight to hydrate it. If you have chlorinated water, let the water sit out overnight for the chlorine to dissipate.
Air plants thrive on rain water or water from ponds. Air plants have no roots and they absorb moisture through their leaves, so misting them occasionally is also a good idea. Fuzzy air plants require less watering than smoother glossier air plants. Air plants can also go outside on the porch, patio or deck. They need bright indirect light. They come from tropical countries, so if you have them outside, be sure to bring them in, if the temperature will dip to freezing, Air plants are resistant to bugs, and disease. Be careful not to overwater, as the plant will rot. These are fun plants, that add interest, life and beauty to your home.

With the passing of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day on June 6th this last Thursday, it had me thinking pretty long of how we are all formed by and within the context of the time since that threshold event took place. When I was born and in the 1970’s developing an awareness of the world, WW2 had only been about 20 years or so in the past. It wasn’t very far back and memory of it and the Great Depression was still very strong. Stories, magazines, and books that told about the history of the war were very popular and readily available everywhere. Dad had a large collection of Ballantine’s History of WW2 paperbacks and I studied them each quite religiously especially on the long bus rides to and from school. Curiosity about the war was still high and shows were still running on TV like Combat!, Black Sheep Squadron, and especially the prisoner of war camp comedy Hogan’s Heroes. Many of the veterans of WW2 were around too
and would be roughly about the same age I am now, many having a very large hand in what was happening daily in the community. Whether they had been heavily affected or not was not always easy to tell on the surface. Art Lysons who had been in combat over in Europe ran our local Tolland store until I was about 10. I often saw him several times a week as I tagged along with Dad to gas up the old red Ford truck, get oil for the Massey 97, or the favorite going inside for things like Revells or Hostess chips. I remember Art chastising me once on a sunny summer day for practicing throwing a rock at some such thing by the gravel road (as I liked playing baseball and was working on my aim) but think of it now quite fondly as a veteran rightfully giving a boy heck for something a young boy ought not to do. Dad often had the ear of veterans that were his parent’s age too, and on the trip with Dad going back home he played a story out of how Art had been under fire before while putting telephone lines up or something to that effect. Makes you wonder what kind of fortitude and devotion to duty he had to expose himself

I often like to take looks at early families who inhabited the areas I read about. While many prefer the tales of kings and queens, I like the stories of the regular folk who lived and built the communities around them. This week, I wanted to look at the Reid Family of Borradaile, also known as the River Reids. Reg Reid had grown up in the area and attended the Bowtell School when Fulton Gillespie was teacher. Gillespie for his part would become a doctor in the Edmonton area. Reg would meet Bessie eventually and the couple would marry. They would live in Borradaile from 1929 to 1934 while Reg worked for the Federal Grain Company as a grain hauler. The couple loved their lives there and often took part in parties, social gatherings and dances. Bessie spoke of the dances and sleigh rides to those dances at Tolland and Woodvale with fondness. “Tom Robinson, who lived a mile northwest of us, would drive us to these places 12 or 15 miles away, with a good team of grey horses.” At the time, roads were not great, and the couple would travel with Robinson in his car to get groceries in Vermilion. It would be awhile before Highway 16 would be built through the area. At the time, Borradaile had no water supply and the CNR would ship in ice for the section men. For the rest of the people in the area, they had to rely on snow, sloughs, or neighbours and friends with water. Bessie helped the sick in the area and answered many calls for sick people or anyone who was in an accident. In one

winter, she helped to nurse 56 patients with the mumps back to health at Vermilion College, while also helping in the birth of several babies. While living in Borradaile, the couple had two daughters named Irene and Doris. The family was often found out in nature, often at the river in a boat, hence where their nickname possibly came from. 2019 VSA’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: U19 - HAILEY ROACH
1. Who is your coach? Shirral Shostak. 2. How long have you played soccer? What age did you start? This is my 12th season. I started when I was 4 years old.
3. What’s your favourite position to play and why? Midfield, because I like having the ability to move the ball up the field.
4. Each team is given a colored jersey. If you had to design your team jersey, what would it look like (color, image, text, etc.)? I like our white jersey’s (wouldn’t change them), because they look slick and makes the team look put together.
5. Do you watch soccer on T.V? Who is your favourite team/player? I don’t watch any professional soccer. I enjoy watching my friends and family play.
6. Many professional players have a lucky charm/piece of clothing/special dance they wear/preform either before or after a game. What’s your lucky token or superstition?7. Why do you like soccer? I have a lucky golf ball that everybody touches before the game, coaches included.
7. Do you practice soccer in your spare time? If so, who do you practice with? When I do have free time I’ll go pass or shoot outside either by myself or with my brother.
8. Why do you like soccer? It is a sport I’ve played my entire life and I’ve grown to love it because it involves being athletic and has lots of teamwork. I love how I get to meet new people as well.
Vermilion Soccer Association (VSA) is built around player participation. The Mini age levels (age 5-11) are progressive in skill development, and positioning. The Youth age levels (age 12-19) compete in District Tier IV competition. Tier IV is non-selective with emphasis on continued skill development within a team play environment. VSA is a member of the Lakeland District Soccer Association. Vermilion 4-H Beef Club – Another Great Year!

Our season started off in September with registration and elections. The Club had thirty-four members (ten seniors, five intermediates, nine juniors, and ten cleavers). Five of these members were new registrants! Club president was Ashely Jones, with Kaylie Krys as Vice President; Shae Wasyliw as Secretary and Chase Bowman as Treasurer. Our leaders this year were Kris Lehmann (General Leader), Cheryl Westman (Assistant General Leader), Derek Jones (Steer Project Leader), Nicole Templeton (Female Project Leader), Nadine Farkash and Kaylyn Zorn (Cleaver Leaders) and Deanna Krys (Beef Production Project Leader). Our club follows the 4-H motto of ‘LEARN TO DO BY DOING’. Meetings were held
once a month. With Leader guidance, members discussed and planned weighin day, field trips, workshops, fundraising activities, communication day, and achievement day. Society grounds on May 26. This is where ‘LEARN TO DO BY DOING’ shines! Members were busy washing, clipping, fitting, cleaning stalls, and fine-tuning public speaking skills for the judge’s questions. We hosted sponsors, judges, family, and friends for a potluck lunch followed by the club’s recognition celebration. Members were recognized for awards won throughout the year and achievement day. Brie Watson was also recognized for completing the

Mannville Elks 2nd Annual Bike/Classic Car Rally
Submitted Mannville Elks held their 2nd Annual Bike/Classic Car Rally on Saturday June 1 in Mannville. Registration took place at 881 Confectionary where 61 bikes from as far away as Drayton Valley registered, four cars and 78 participants. “We are very excited to have doubled our numbers from last year.” stated event chair Jim Storch. “With help from our Elks and Royal Purple Elks everything went
extremely well with our Rally and Pig Roast Supper. We also had help from the Lodges in Viking, Irma, Wainwright, and Vermilion.” Joclyn Lanovich won Irma’s 50/50 draw, Justin Henry from Lloyd won the “Pride in your Ride” bike picture, Shirly Wonsik won the “Pride in your Ride” car photo. First place poker hand winner with a 4 of a kind went to Wayne Tymchyshyn choosing the leather riding chaps donated by
Don’s Speed Parts Wainwright. Second place hand to a flush was Dwayne Cooper accepting the Stay and Play package donated by Mannville Golf Course. Third place straight went to Alisha Mistoe choosing the ATB/Mannville Agencies Gift Bag. War Amps 2019 Key Tags Mailed Out To Alberta Residents

Alberta (June 4, 2019) – As The War Amps embarks on its second century of ser vice, the Asso c iation’s 2019 key tags are being mailed to Alberta households this week with the theme, “Your Key Tags at Work.” The Key Tag Service was launched after the Second World War so that returning war amputee veterans could not only work for competitive wages, but also provide a service to Canadians that would generate funds for the Association. Each key tag has a confidentially coded number. If you lose your keys, the finder can call the toll-free number on the back of the tag or place them in any mailbox, and The War Amps will return them to you by courier, free of charge. The War Amps receives no government grants. With the public’s support of the Key Tag Service, the Association is making a difference in the lives of amputees by providing financial assistance for ar tificial limbs, peer support and information on all aspects of living with amputation. Alberta Royal Purple Conference
On June 7, Curtis Anderson opened the event with his story of brain injury and told everyone about the many positive things that have happened as a result of his 15 years since he started his Courage Canada Trail Ride. Anderson received a standing ovation for his talk and was also presented with a cheque for Courage Canada for $200 from the
Alberta Royal Purple Lodges Association who held the conference in Vermilion from June 7 to 9. Next was Ashley Walsh from the Ronald McDonald House Charities from Edmonton. This charity supports families seeking medical treatment for their seriously ill or injured children up to 18 years of age. They provide a home away from home for those families that need to travel for

It was bit ter sweet as we gathered for our final school mass on Wednesday, June 5, as we knew it would be the last time we celebrated with Father Roger and the grade twelve students. We were blessed with a beautiful morning to walk to church and celebrate our faith together. Father Roger reminded us of how much he loves us, just as Jesus loves us and we are to love one another. Father Roger shared how special St. Jerome’s School is to him and that he will take our spirit with him. After mass Mr. Chase thanked Mrs. Sanson for working with different grades and sharing her talents as she led the choir each month and thanked this month’s choir,

the Grade four class. Mr. Chase also thanked Father Roger for being our spiritual leader for the past six years and that his influences will remain with us. We also said good-bye to our grade twelve class. Mr. Chase asked them to remember what they have learned during their time at St. Jerome’s, especially the messages they have heard at church and to treasure them in their hearts. The grade twelve students exited the church first to say their good-byes to Father Roger, who received hugs, high-fives and handshakes from every student. May Happigrams were held last week. Mr. Martin and the grade five class entertained the large crowd gathered with their beautiful recorder music. The whole class played a number of pieces together followed by groups of children sharing their favourite pieces.
Thank you grade five class for sharing your talents and gifts with our school community. Congratulations to all the May Happigram winners for their hard work, improvement and consistent work throughout the school year and being positive spirits in our classrooms. What a beautiful day to play ball for the annual St. Jerome’s Slo-Pitch Tournament on Thursday, June 6. Thank you to our Sr. High Student Council for making this fun day possible, especially our Sports Rep, Cameron Bartley. Thank you to the members of the Knights of Columbus for cooking hot dogs for all the players. VIBE hosted our annual Mental Health Art Gala at the start of May. This evening was a great opportunity to connect with many families and members of the community and surrounding area. Many VES students entered art this year. We had six students place in the top fifteen for their age group: Katelynn (2A), Miles A. (2B), Fiala (2B), Tyrah (3A), Jenaya (5C), and Reese (6B). Congratulations to everyone who entered. The Grade 1 students walked to Lawns and Gardens Greenhouse on May 30 to learn more about plants. The students learned the difference between annuals and perennials, coniferous and deciduous trees, and taste tested spearmint, green onions, and dill. Thank you to Lawns and Gardens Greenhouse for the great hands-on field trip for our students. VES enjoyed an afternoon outside on May 31, which we titled the VES Outdoor Fun Day. This was a part of ParticipAction Community Better Challenge. We will be tracking physical activity minutes at school until June 16. You and your family can track your physical activity minutes to help Vermilion a bundle of money in the Challenge. Rejuvenating Stressed Pastures And Hayfields

“ Pa s t u r e s a n d h ay f i e l d s o f t e n seeded on land with more cropping limit ations were stres sed in many parts of Alberta last year, even late the previous year, and now again this spring,” says Grant Lastiwka, forage extension specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. Lastiwka offers these tips to make those pastures and hay fields more productive: Plan to start grazing later “Planning for a later start date for the grazing season is known to be the most cost effective rejuvenation plan you can have,” he says. “ This means longer feeding at a time when we may not have the feed to do so, and cattle want to be out on new green grass. It is challenging but I see no other sound alternative other than winter annuals seeded last fall, stockpiled forage, or corn-swath grazing held back for spring use.” Access more acres for seeding annuals for hay or silage use L a s t i w k a s ay s t h a t l o o k i n g f o r pasture elsewhere does provide good opportunities if it can be found. “ Trucking costs when amor tized over the grazing period can add signif-
icant costs to this option. However, this option may work for those producers who own their own truck, can find a close enough pasture or get a back haul.” He adds that existing pastures that come up for rent – if not taken by local neighbor s – c ould be overgra zed, overpricing for what you get and water quality/availability needs to be considered. “ Producers should arrange for a rental agreement that allows for a low stocking rate or using some rotational grazing options. You may also be able to plan to keep animals in sacrifice areas that were less desirable – so not grazed last year to get more grazing days this year. Providing water if not present in these unfavourable areas could be a good investment for even a week or more to rest those other highly desirable overgrazed areas.” Fer tilize early or just before a significant rain event “ Doing so with blends on forage stands will speed up recover y and growth,” explains Lastiwka. Soil mineralization continues briefly after grass plants have gone dormant due to lack of moisture. “ Meaning, you may have a small fertility store for plant compensatory

growth, if they are not overgrazed, in forage stands for this year that are alread y t here. Let t ing over gr a ze d pasture gras ses grow in s pr ing is crucial so their roots can get down to this nutrient pool and recover some vigor. Waiting after a significant rain and heat to jump start uniform plant growth across the majority of a pasture stand is crucial.” Lastiwka says that fertilizer prices this spring have increased but high stored forage prices make fertilization of hay or pasture for 2019 – 2020 an option that is generally profitable. “This is the case for vigorous forage stands. Overgrazed pastures or low nitrogen grass hay stands use fertility for much needed root growth first so the delay yield response could carry to the following year.” He adds that conducting a soil test is the most ef fec tive use of those fertilizer dollars. “Unless we chose to fertilize late in spring, we are too late to get this analysis back in time for the most effective early fertilizer application. If you decide to fertilize without soil testing use some nitrogen (N), and consider using phosphorus (P) and possibly sulphur (S). Sulphur needs are especially true on gray wooded soils. We are now finding S is needed
on some black soils or on stands of older legumes on brown soil areas.” “Good grass pastures with good moisture may give up to 10 to 20 plus pounds of forage dry matter per lb. of N fer tilizer applied. Grass hay land is more likely be 20 lb. of forage dry matter per pound of N. This may be less if another nutrient is deficient. That is why I recommend a blend. After good management for plant and soil health, soil N supply should be the key focus. Cost to fertilize hay will vary based on amounts of N, P, potassium (K), or S applied. It will still be cost effective or break-even at worst, considering the present and likely this fall’s hay, greenfeed, silage prices.” “In pastures, a grazing animal returns about 80% of the N consumed in urine and manure,” he explains. “Of this after losses to the air of ammonia (NH3), about 50% to 60% of the N is actually available for the plants to reuse. Eighty to 90% of the P, K and S in the manure and urine will return to the soil. Throug h g o o d gra zing management, ‘ fer tilizer’ will spread around the pasture and not just in the cattle’s ‘lounging’ areas.” Start looking now at feeding options for the next 365 days Continued on page 27
