The Royal Canadian Air Force’s 42 Radar Squadron based out of Cold Lake deployed approximately 30 personnel to Vermilion from May 2 - 28. Two locations were set up including an operations site and a radar site, both manned 24/7 with personnel working 8 12 hour shifts in collaboration with Exercise Maple Resolve which was scheduled from May 11 - 25. 42 Radar Squadron is one of two deployable radar squadrons in Canada, and Maple Resolve involved American, British, French, and Canadian troops working together including over 5,000 people. Sgt Filiatreault explained that they are an operational training unit who were providing radio capability, satellite mission control, and overseeing quite a

lot of electronics. Lt Liebrecht said that with a small group, everyone is specialized to do a lot of different things. “Since we are a NATO country we have to be familiar with a lot of different types of kits and equipment,” said Lt Liebrecht. 42 Radar Squadron used radar that can steer the beam electronically and can see 240 nautical miles or approximately 400 km. A third party from Ottawa tested the safety ranges of radiation from the radar prior to exercises and onlookers stood within a safe zone of radiation. “Civilian safety is number one for us,” said Lt Tae Wan Kim. “ We provide sur veillance of the airspace in support of Exercise Maple Resolve which is a large primarily army, but joint exercise out of the Wainwright Training Area. The Air Force integrates

by providing both rotary aviation (helicopters) and close air support (Alpha jets and CF-18s), but no aircraft landed in Vermilion due to the runway. Maple Resolve Exercise is a simulated war determining how ground forces would react. We provide a common operating picture and control the airplanes going into that exercise area. The aircraft are then handed off to controllers (people on the ground). Our squadron mandate is validated by making sure our equipment and personnel are ready to be deployed in response to any Government of Canada initiatives which could include anything from protecting a coastline to overseas operations,” said MWO Carlisle Mason. 42 Radar Squadron’s call sign is ‘Trapline’; and also participating was United States Air Force exchange officer,

Capt Heyne, who was the Detachment Commanding Officer. Lt Liebrecht was trained in Cornwall, Ontario in 2017 and said joining the Air Force was the best decision he’s made. After monitoring Wainwright airspace, and facilitating the air battle he said, “We’re here just to make sure that everyone gets home safe.” MWO Mason continued to describe that the operations site housed both an Operations MECC (mobile environmentally controlled container) and a Welcome MECC. The Welcome MECC was used as a nice place to get out of the elements and discuss lessons learned etc. This year, they tried using new microwaves to feed their information and in addition had radio antennas from their operations MECC. Cattle Woman - April Ockerman

Cattle woman, April Ockerman, has just released two new podcasts and three new e-books detailing all kinds of helpful information for anyone in the cattle industry. They are geared towards people interested in halter training cattle, selling cattle and showing cattle. Producers and 4-H members alike can benefit from her first-hand knowledge in the industry as she continues to manage her own herd and help with her family beef cow-calf operation near Dewberry, Alberta. In her free time, Ockerman also judges showmanship and grooming for beef shows, judges public speaking and offers one on one coaching with 4-H members and their calves. Her three e-books are titled, ‘Why Train Cattle,’ ‘Complete Guide To Halter Training Cattle,’ and ‘Complete Guide To Leading Cattle.’ Her two podcasts are titled ‘Training Cattle, Selling Cattle, Showing Cattle & TG,’ and ‘A Voice of ALO Cattle Women.’ Her e-books are available on www.amazon.ca, and her podcasts can be listened to at https://podcasts.apple. com, http://alotgjp67.libsyn.com/ or http:// april89.libsyn.com. Ockerman previously found that there

was limited material for these types of books available, especially online. Subsequently, she thought it would be a great niche for her to focus on. “I decided to do the podcasts and e-books because it was a way for me to give back and they are a great education and learning tool for people,” said Ockerman. The process for creating podcasts was something she had wanted to do for a long time but put off being apprehensive about what people would think. In October of 2018, she decided to go for it, and created episodes putting them up on the directory, and was surprised about how much positive feedback she received. Her podcasts explain why beef producers, cattle ranchers, or people who show their cattle would train them, and educate people already in the industry on how a cow can become quieter. Ranchers or 4-H members can learn extremely valuable techniques on how to halter train their cattle. She also shares tricks to make leading progression easier overall, as well as her knowledge on tower gardens. “These e-books and podcasts allow people to keep up to date with my work, have a broader reach as well as provide a channel or hub of information to download

or listen to whenever you like which is a huge benefit. They are easy to understand so people don’t have to go searching for information on how to do things. Having the convenience of technology now available helps when people are having issues because they can use their phone in the corral and within minutes can find the technique that they want to use. I put up a brand new episode on both podcast shows each week and will be releasing some online courses later this month. I have been running my podcast

for the last eight months and on average have 67 people per month download my podcast episodes on the first show and 34 people who download the episodes per month on the other show and these numbers are growing daily! I also reach people from all over the world, for example, people listen from Canada, the United States, and Australia. At the end of the day, I’m able to educate, promote and have fun sharing my knowledge on these two podcasts and that’s what makes my heart happy!” said Ockerman.

With personnel working around the clock, they used a light trailer to illuminate the area. They also had a refrigeration mechanical trailer, and a generator with a berm around for environmental concerns (in the event of a spill). The berm had a water filtration system that could filter out contaminates and keep from overflowing. Their TFAR (trailer forward area refueling) got refuelled from Lloydminster every few days, and their RM truck with a slip tank was used to deliver fuel from site to site. This year, 42 Radar Squadron was thrilled to be able to use 4Wing Cold Lake’s deployable fitness centre. Using brand new equipment for a new initiative, personnel enjoyed the opportunity to keep fit. It was the first time they have had such equipment and did not feel lacking during exercises. He went on to describe how they use safety with fire stations and how MECCs are packed up to go. Their communications equipment was on an A-frame that fits on a PLS (pallet loading system). A large hook on a hydraulic system is designed to guide and load H-frames or A-frames onto the trucks. They used a HLVW (heavy logistics vehicle wheeled), and an HESV (heavy equipment service vehicle) more robust than the HLVW each with trailers to haul behind. “Everything is designed to be both road and air transportable. Things have been going well for us; operationally it’s been a success so far,” said MWO Mason. During a tour of the sites given to local flying club members, Lt Tae Wan Kim

said, “Thanks for taking the time to show interest in what we do and support the troops.” “It’s an amazing facility; to think that this can all be transported in 72 hours,” said Vermilion River Flying Club member Larry Bingham. School students also had the opportunity to tour the sites the following week. “Overall, I found that the townspeople in Vermilion have been so nice. Usually we are in a field setting and not within a community. We are very appreciative that everyone was very welcoming which allowed for a good experience,” said MWO Mason. “A lot of people shook our hands and thanked us for our service,” added Sgt Filiatreault.

We all know that apples are good to eat, but they are also packed full of health benefits. Apples are an excellent source of flavonoid and polyphenol antioxidants. Many years ago, Douglas Urquhar t wa s a s t u d e n t at Bridstow School near Vermilion. In his recounting of the school and his life there, he provides us with a glimpse into what one-room schoolhouses were like. His teacher at the time when he first enrolled was Earl Browser, who provided the students with an excellent library to read many different books from that time. He also had an odd saying to the young boys, which was “You’ll be a man before your mother”. Personally, I don’t know what he was getting at. Several teachers came through at that time when Douglas was there. One of his favourites was Dorothy Stone, a teacher who eventually moved to Edmonton to teach. During the spring and summer months, it was easy to get to school and there was plenty of time for playing outside. In the winter, it was several kilometres of snow drifts and steep hills. Sometimes the way home was completely blocked at Douglas’ father had to clear a path.

Life At Bridstow School

In the spring, the local coulee was a favourite place for the students to play and swim, but the students would have to make sure they got out when it was time to get back to school and begin learning again. As was typical for many area schools, the school Christmas concert was the biggest event of the year. It would help to break up the monotony of schoolwork through the winter months and provide a great opportunity for locals to socialize and see each other’s kids. From Januar y to June, Douglas describes it as a long and hard grind to the end of the school year. He states that with bad weather, and a school that was often cold until noon, along with schoolwork, homework and chores to be done, it was an always busy time of year. One aspect of school we take for granted is the separate rooms for separate grades. For Douglas, all grades were taught in the same room and that made it difficult to concentrate on your own schoolwork when other students of a different grade in your room were involved in a school item of more interest. The system was not perfect and the number of students who found success

afterwards was lower than it is today, but the one-room schoolhouse still served an important purpose. As for Douglas, he would go on to teach at a one-room school for five years near Kitscot y. He described having to prepare and present nine different grades work every day as an arduous and trying task that had many rewards. Bridstow School, which opened in May of 1918 would operate until 1955.

3. What’s your favourite position to play and why? Favourite position is midfield because it’s the most running.

4. Each team is given a colored jersey. If you had to design your team jersey, what would it look like (color, image, text, etc.)? Jersey color would be blue with a Strikers logo in top right corner and on the back would be the players name.

5. Do you watch soccer on T.V? Who is your favourite team/player? I often watch soccer on TV and my favourite player is Neymar Jr. who plays for Paris St Germain.

6. Many professional players have a lucky charm/piece of clothing/ special dance they wear/preform either before or after a game. What’s your lucky token or superstition?7. Why do you like soccer? In my bag I always have a favourite rock that I think is my lucky rock.

Canadian Safe Boating Council Submitted

May 13, 2019 -- Toronto, ON, --North American Safe Boating Awareness Week will take place across Canada from May 18th to May 24th, 2019. Safe Boating Awareness Week, managed by the CSBC (Canadian Safe Boating Council) and its partners, has been created to promote safe and responsible boating practices to the estimated 16 million recreational boaters across Canada. A l t h o u g h b o at i n g re l ate d fat a li ties have trended downwards in past years, there continues to be an average of over 100 boating related deaths annually in Canadian waters. With Canadians preparing to launch their boats after a long winter slumber, the goal of Safe Boating Awareness Week is to continue to reduce fatalities by ensuring that boaters who head out in any type of vessel have the knowledge and equipment to help them have a safe day on the water. The timing of the week, star ting on the Victoria Day long weekend, is per fectly aligned with the unofficial start of summer and a time when many boating fatalities occur. The CSBC and its partners will be promoting 5 key messages, all directed towards the most common boating related accidents. They include: 1. Wear a Lifejacket 2. Boat Sober 3. Take a Boating Course 4. Be Prepared – Both You and Your Vessel 5. Be Aware of the Risks of Cold Water Immersion To help media in communicating safe boating messages, short stories to be used as discrete ar ticles and short audio and video PSAs are available. Submitted Re: Town of Vermilion Garbage Bins The Town of Vermilion has provided everybody with black garbage bins that people put out on Wednesdays or Thursdays. In my case it’s Thursday. They are not a bad idea, but many people treat the bins as yard ornaments. They leave them out on the street or in the front yard in plain sight. The bins are not attractive.

They are garbage bins for goodness sake. Put them out on the street when you are supposed to and pull them back in after the garbage has been collected. There’s no reason why they should clutter up the yard or street any longer than 24 hours. Nobody wants to look at them any more than they have to. Approximately 50 people attended the Cornerstone Co-op AGM at the Mannville Elk’s Hall on May 15. Board members, staff and guests seized the oppor tunity to celebrate Mannville Co-op’s 100th Anniversary

and the accomplishments of the team throughout the region. On August 16, Cornerstone Co-op will be hosting a Long Table Dinner in Mannville. Mannville Minor Ball attended, selling tickets for their Alberta Tasting & Taco Night on June 1. To purchase tickets you can visit the Mannville Co-op.

er’s report was given by Graham Getz, and a financial report was given by Brad Belton. In addition service recognition was given to team members, and it was noted that Cornerstone Co-op continues to invest back into communities. Participants enjoyed socializing and refreshments following the meeting.

The Back 40 Cafe will be hosting a Closing Out and Garage Sale on May 31 - June 1 on hwy 619 (20km south of Vermilion and 20km east). Owner Phyllis Lamport is both sad and happy and said that the past 15 years have been a wonderful success. Though the cafe will be looking at closing or selling out, they have been most thankful to their neighbours, friends, and others who have supported them over the years. “My daughter Trina has been the best support of her mom’s business ever. What I have loved most is that before neighbors

never knew each other, and now they are the best of friends; it’s phenomenal!” said Phyllis Lamport. She joked that her burnt cinnamon buns may have been the highlight of her business; that people thought they were the best and that together, they had too much fun. Money raised will help maintain five apartments located in Galen Lofts across from the UofA Hospital for those going through the transplant process, cash, gift cards and visa dollars go directly to the transplant recipients for financial obligations. Dollars raised also assists with the signage campaign. This is to put signs up in arenas all over Alberta and Saskatchewan to remind people to talk to their families about organ and tissue donation. Lloydminster RCMP Introduces Traffic Safety Initiative

Lloydminster, Alta – The City of Lloydminster, in partnership with the Lloydminster RCMP Detachment, will be introducing a new traffic safety program starting in May 2019. The “Constable Scarecrow ” project originated in Coquitlam, B.C., last year. Since the program’s inception, Coquitlam RCMP reported the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit was reduced by approximately 50 percent. The program will include a full-sized metal cut-out of a uniformed RCMP officer which will be placed in strategic

locations around the city. These new Constables will be visible next to roadways in high traffic and high collision areas. “We are excited about the collaboration with the City of Lloydminster. This initiative is a positive step to enhance road safety,” says Inspector Lee Brachmann, Lloydminster RCMP Detachment Commander. “Hopefully we will see a reduction in the number of violations found on the roads.” Traffic enforcement is integral to reduce collisions. The Vermilion River Flying Club celebrated their 1st Anniversary on May 15, at the Vermilion Airport. After enjoying a meal together, new executive nominations and votes took place and all positions were filled by acclimation. New roles include Darcy Balaneski - president, Don Oldenburg vice president, Larry Bingham - secretary, Matt Jaremco - treasurer. War Amputee Veteran Marks 75th Anniversary of D-Day On June 6, 1944, Allan Bacon arrived by boat on Juno Beach in Normandy, France, with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. On June 17, 1944, Bacon was based in a barn, anticipating an attack that never came. He went into a nearby shed to disarm the grenades when one exploded, resulting in the loss of his right arm. On returning to Canada, Bacon became a member of The War Amps, an Association started by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other adapt to their new reality. Through the years, Bacon along with his fellow War Amps members, have made it a goal to remember and commemorate their fallen comrades, and to educate youth about the horrors of war. St. Jerome’s School News

It was an amazing day at St. Jerome’s on Friday, May 10 as we partnered with TheyBuildBridges to experience the cultures of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit during Indigenous Celebration Day. The day started with presentations to our honoured guests, the Creeland Metis Dancers, and traditional dances of the First Nation peoples. Inuit games, tipi tales, bannock making, storytelling, drumming, dancing were just a few of the workshops the students were able to become actively involved in. The closing session for St. Jerome’s Indigenous Day was one of the most emotional parts of the day, watching the joy and raw emotion on the faces of the whole school as they were led in a traditional Round Dance with the Poundmaker Singers and Mr. Adrian LaChance. Truly our hearts were tethered together in this beautiful dance of relationship, respect for one another, and unity! Thank you to

After several fundraising activities and waiting very patiently for months, the grade 6s were off to Drumheller. At the Royal Tyrrell Museum, they participated in solving a Cretaceous Crime scene, casted a fossil, hiked the badlands, and learned Dinometrics to piece together dinosaur skeletons. Before bunking down under the tyrannosaurus rex and triceratops in Dinosaur Hall, the students swam at the Drumheller Aquaplex. The next morning, they hiked around the hoodoos and braved crossing the Red Deer River on the Star Mine Suspension Bridge. The bus ride was quiet after all of this fun and excitement! What an amazing, educational, unique field trip. High School Student Council elections were held on Wednesday, May 15. The top competitors will advance to participate in the “Highway 16” Championships this week and the “ECACS Championships” next week. St. Jerome’s 2019 Graduation is taking place on Saturday, May 25. Please join us to celebrate the achievements of our amazing grade twelve students. The day will begin with Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Parish at 1 p.m. and the Graduation Ceremony is at the Vermilion Regional Centre at 6:30 p.m. The Leadership 10 Class has been busy working on a variety of projects to show their appreciation to the staff at St. Jerome’s. Each staff member received a card and thoughtful letter written by a grade 10 student. The staff was also treated to a variety of desserts in the staffroom one day and a delicious breakfast last week. The staff really appreciated all your thoughtful gestures and feel privileged to work with the amazing students at St. Jerome’s. The Grade 10 Leadership Class also

organized a very successful 30-Hour Famine at the beginning of May. The students were able to raise $1000 for the charity Chalice. Students in grade one to five have been busy preparing their poems for Declamation. All elementary students memorized a poem to recite in their classroom, and then several were chosen to present their poems at the Declamation Recital held on Tuesday, May 14 in front of parents, family members, and peers. Congratulations to all the students for their amazing presentations. Elementary students are enjoying Skip Club on Wednesday after school. The students work through a variety of stations improving their skipping skills and learning new tricks. Thank you to Ms. McDermott and Mrs. Lysons for helping the students throughout the month of May to become better skippers. The elementary students were able to raise $5,500 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation during the Jump Rope for Heart Event. 5C entered the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge that was sponsored by Canadian Geographic and Shell. There were 16 energy related challenges. Some of the fun challenges were tracking personal water and plastic bag usage, making an energy awareness video, and spending some hours

learning without using any power. This was a great way to delve further into the Electricity unit in Science. The Challenge ran from February until the end of April. Mr. Beecroft received an email telling them that they had won $228 in prize money. They have decided to give the money to VES’s School Beautification Committee to aid in sprucing up VES. Mrs. Grinde, from BTPS Central Office, came to join the Grade 1 classes

on May 9 and teach them about Bear Witness Day. They learned about a First Nation’s boy named Jordan River Anderson and hear his story. They celebrated Spirit Bear’s birthday and had juice and cupcakes for a treat. Thank-you to Mrs. Grinde for spending time in the Grade 1 classrooms and for teaching our students about First Nations people and our journey to reconciliation. The first Annual VES Cup Soccer Tournament has wrapped up. This Intramural activity was for Grade 5 and 6 students, and those students who were interested signed up. Mr. Harvey then put them on the following country teams: Australia, Italy, Germany, Iceland, and Brazil. In the end, Brazil got the Gold Medal, Australia the Silver Medal, and Italy the Bronze. This was a fun tournament with great sportsmanship exhibited. This year we joined the Northern Birthday Box Project as our global citizenship project. It meets our goals of infusing First Nation, Metis, and Inuit perspectives and understanding that where we live affects how we live. The Northern Birthday Box Project provides birthday parties for children in the far northern communities of Canada. Northern birthday parties are often a community event and can be very expensive simply because of where you live. VES met our goal of being able to send one box per classroom to sponsor a child.

All 13 boxes made it to the children. The families sent messages of appreciation and pictures showing each child’s birthday. Way to go VES. Thanks for making a difference. IN-TOWN BUSSING FEES – REGISTRATION DUE DATE JUNE 15, 2019 In Vermilion, in-town bussing is provided for the following schools: • Vermilion Elementary School • J.R. Robson School • St. Jerome’s School • Vermilion Outreach School ALL students riding on a Vermilion in-town bus (VR-VT24, VR-VT25, VR-VT26, VR-VT27 and/or VR-VT28) are required to register annually. INELIGIBLE /TRANSPORTATION TO CAREGIVER BUSSING FEES Ineligible passengers are those students residing less than 2.4 km by roadway or public right of way from their designated school pursuant to Section 51 (2) of the School Act. All ineligible passengers are required to pay a fee. Transportation to Caregiver bussing is subject to availability. Privileges may be revoked if space becomes an issue. The caregiver’s residence must be in the student’s designated transportation (attendance) area. Fees will not be pro-rated for am or pm only for Transportation to Caregiver bussing as we are reserving a seat for your child on the bus. Students who ride two different buses will be required to pay an additional fee, this includes transportation to a second primary residence. FEES: ANNUAL 1 child (ECS to grade 12) $285.00 /year Payment plans Online payments are 2+ children - family rate $570.00 /year are available. now accepted. For further information on eligibility, to register for in-town bussing, or to discuss payment plans, please contact the Transportation Department. Registrations are due June 15, 2019 and payment is due August 31, 2019. In-town bussing will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis. If you have outstanding bus fees from the 2018-2019 school year or prior your child(ren) will not be permitted to register for the bus. BUS ROUTES WILL BE PLANNED BY AUGUST 15, 2019. If you have not registered your child by this date it may impact bus stop locations and your child may be delayed from obtaining bus service until after the new school year has begun and bus routes can be rearranged. Equipment operators play a vital role in the farming industry. They operate and maintain the equipment used in virtually every stage of modern agricultural production, from the combines used to harvest crops to the loading machines that prepare them for market. Agricultural equipment operators work with all kinds of farming machinery including tractors, raking equipment, berry pickers, threshers and hay balers. Their important work is essential for tilling soil, planting seeds, fertilizing plants and harvesting crops. Working with heavy-duty farm equipment requires a unique skillset and specialized training. To be a successful farm machinery operator, you need to have excellent physical coordination and driving skills as well as mechanical aptitude and the ability to make decisions

If you’re an animal lover looking to work in the agriculture industry, here are four careers that involve working with animals. Animal health inspector. Animal health inspectors make sure animals on farms are kept in safe, well-maintained environments where they’re not mistreated or neglected. Most animal health inspectors hold college diplomas or university degrees in animal science or a related field. According to the Government of Canada labour market reports, the median wage for animal health inspectors is $29.74 an hour. Livestock breeder. Livestock breeders use their knowledge of genetics to select breeding stock that will produce healthy, high-quality farm animals. The duties of animal breeders include choosing the right animals for breeding, administering medications and supplements and maintaining health and pedigree records. Improving Dairy Cow Reproduction

Maintaining steady levels of bovine reproduction requires discipline, otherwise milk production can suffer greatly. Although it remains essential to take genetics into account, it is not, however the only solution in improving reproduction. It is indespensable to observe the animals and anticipate their needs. It is particularly important that feeding, housing, sanitary conditions and reproduction deadlines are all properly controlled. In order to promote good sanitary conditions, prevention is the best means of

control. When in doubt, a veterinarian should always be consulted. On a dairy farm, controlling reproduction starts with balanced food rations for milk producing cows. Food rations for dairy cows should be calculated by volume and quality, in both summer and winter. Heifers should receive the same rations as producing cows and inlcude the addition of all the normal vitamins. The diet of dry, or non-lactating cows should be reduced in order to avoid excessive weight gain during calving. It is also very important to note when animals
