‘It Can’t Happen To Me – Risk Awareness’

Mannville – Minburn – Innisfree Family and Community Support Services (M-MIF.C.S.S.) hosted their 21st mock presentation ‘It Can’t Happen To Me – Risk Awareness Project’ for Grade 9 students in Mannville on May 1. Students from Mannville, Innisfree, Irma, and Creighton Colony Schools had the opportunity to learn about the services available and procedures that can take place during traumatic events by viewing the mock – motor vehicle collision, as well as presentations that related to the consequences of negative risk taking. The overall message to the students was that risk management and choices are a part of life. “This project gives youth the power to choose through education and the motivation to choose wisely. Acknowledge that texting and driving, drinking and driving, and not wearing your seatbelt are negative risks. Your actions
positive or negative affect you, your family, and the community. Do your part in keeping safe,” said Jannette Riedel, M-M-IF.C.S.S. During the presentation, students viewed the scene of a mock-partial roll over and weighed the seriousness of risk taking. As a teacher and Mannville Fire Department training officer, Zane Polishuk described play by play details of what would happen in a live situation. He commented, “We’re all local. When my tones go off to alert me to a Fire Dept call, my first thought is always, ‘Who is it; is it one of mine?’” Funeral Director and Embalmer for Lakeland Funeral Home, Jim Storch added, “It takes a community to raise a child; it also takes a community to grieve. Think about your decisions before you take action.” Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to visit a mock-trauma
room, and receive speeches from Vermilion RCMP and Victim Services, Prairie EMS, Lakeland Funeral Home, and guest speaker Nicole Martin. Comments from

UFA Celebrating Jack Rehill’s Retirement After 47 Years

After 47 years of dedication to the UFA Farm and Ranch Supply Store, Manager Jack Rehill retired from the Vermilion location on April 30. Jack’s adventures with UFA began in his home town of Hanna then Spruce Grove, Provost, Airdrie, and lastly Vermilion where he found the love of his life, married and made it his permanent residence. Jack is very well liked among the farming community in both local, and surrounding areas. “I will miss the customer contact and involvement most as I have developed a long list of good cliental and long-term friendships,” said Rehill. Most of the staff at Vermilion UFA are long term; ranging from 1 - 40 years of service. After receiving years of guidance, they will be missing his family-like charm. “ He was the best boss anybody
could ask for; his boots will be hard to fill,” said Iventory Management Clerk, Donna Rudyk who worked with Jack for 10 years. Twenty-one-year colleague, Monalynn, said that over the years, the store had undergone many renovations with Jack often doing the work himself after hours. “He never asked us to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself. He showed amazing leadership, and maintained many long term employees because of the way he treated his staff,” said Sawatsky. Activities Jack enjoyed in Vermilion included various community events such as curling and his involvement with the Agricultural Society. Friends and past colleagues from out of town made their way to help Jack celebrate, as well as many local customers and friends. Everyone was treated by a lovely catered lunch as
well as cake and coffee. The first few weeks after retirement, J ac k p l an s to o bt ain s o m e mu c h needed rest and relaxation. Do not be surprised if you see Jack out visiting and helping the farmers who need a helping hand.

The Vermilion Lions Club will be hosting their annual Walk for Dog Guides event at the Vermilion Provincial Park on May 26, with sign in at 1 p.m. and walk at 2 p.m. The walk is a family and dog-friendly event that welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. The walk raises funds to provide lifechanging Dog Guides to Canadians with varying medical and physical disabilities. One-hundred percent of the funds raised go towards the training and placement of Dog Guides, and since 1985 they have raised more than $15 million. According to Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, the event has been

carried out for more than 32 years, and the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides has been a vital national fundraiser in support of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. The national events take place in approximately 300 communities across Canada. Providing specially trained Dog Guides increase the independence, mobility, and safety of their handlers. The Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides rely on the generous support of volunteers, donors, and partners to meet its goal of giving Canadians a new lease on life. Regardless of the approximate $25,000 expense, it takes to raise, train, and place each dog; each eligible Canadian receives a dog guide at no cost to them. “We have been doing the walk here in
Vermilion for the past nine years and have raised approximately $27,000; that’s the equivalent of one dog raised, trained and placed. I am very happy for all the help from Justin Thompson, Kirby Whitlock and the

members of the Lions Club in organizing the walk. I am also thankful for all the supporters that come out each year; this dog walk is very special to me,” said Jimmy Cryderman, Lions Club member and organizer of the Walk for Dog Guides.

North Central Livestock held their customer appreciation on May 4. Approximately 500 head were up for sale during the 1st Annual Pen of 10 Select Heifer Sale, and customers of all ages enjoyed a beef on a bun lunch as well as donuts and refreshments. Customers judged pens of
heifers with 1st prize receiving $750. “We would like to say a special thank you to all of the 4-H Highway Clean-up groups for staying safe and keeping our roadways looking nice. From Smoky Lake to Vermilion, I distributed 128 donuts to
4-H youth volunteers. Today we are celebrating our customer appreciation for the 2018-2019 season. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers and let them know that we have a successful cattle
industry coming this fall. On behalf of the staff and management, may the farmers in the future each continue to have a prosperous year,” said owner, Len Hrehorets.

A proud daughter of Alberta, Jean Wright, is on to her next grand adventure! Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Wendy Wright, Regina, SK., Barbara Skagfjord, Sechelt B.C., Katherine (Murray) Coburn, Vermilion, AB., Nancy (Robert) Pearson, St. Albert, AB., and their families. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Jack. Jean was born and lived a full and happy life in her beloved Vermilion. She graduated from U of A in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science in Household Economics and taught at the Vermilion Agriculture College (Lakeland College) for 23 years. Her interests and energy were evident in her many volunteer community activities. Jean's family and friends added depth to the fabric of her life and brought her immense pleasure. A celebration of Jean's life was held at the First United Church, Vermilion, Saturday April 6, 2019. CARD OF THANKS Jean's family wish to express their deepest appreciation to everyone who visited, brought food over, called, sent beautiful floral arrangements, cards and assisted in any way throughout this difficult time. Jean was so truly blessed to belong to such a kind, loving and caring community. Angel Food Cake With Flower Petals

I love spring and s u m m er a n d a n g e l food cakes. They seem to go together for me. You can drizzle this cake with icing and then decorate with edible flower petals such as from the prairie wild rose, the pansy, sunflower, peony, and lilac. Be sure that they have not been sprayed with chemicals before using them and note that not all flower petals are edible, some are poisonous. Making an angel food cake from scratch is both an art and a science. The taste of a homemade angel food cake is so much better than a cake mix or bakery cake. For many years, I was not able to crack the code to a really good angel food cake. Af ter much determination, research and many

cakes, angel food heaven has finally given up its secrets. Today I am going to share those secrets, so you too can climb up to angel food cake success. First let’s look at the science behind the angel food cake: 12 eggs should be at room temperature and must be carefully separated to avoid any yolk. The egg whites are beaten to the soft peak stage. I have beaten the egg whites to the stif f peak stage, but the cake is never as high as one in which the egg whites are at the soft peak stage. Using cream of tartar will help to strengthen the egg white. It is best to use granulated sugar to add to the egg whites for strength, and use powdered sugar when sifting it into the flour for lightness. Cake flour should be used instead of all purpose, for a light, tender and high cake. I used a simple metal strainer to sift the flour and sugar together, and it was much
with a mix master until frothy. Add the cream of tartar and continue to beat until the egg whites start to form soft peaks. Gradually add the granulated sugar while beating, keeping the egg whites in the soft peak stage. Do not beat to the stiff peak stage. In the last 5 seconds add the vanilla. Sift some of the flour mixture over the delicate beaten egg whites, and then gently fold the flour mix ture into the egg white with one stroke. Continue until all the flour mixture is folded in. Do not over stir. Pour into an ungreased, two piece tube pan and bake for 43 – 50 minutes. Over baking caused the cake to deflate. Turn the cake pan upside down and allow to completely cool before removing. Ser ve with a thin butter cream icing which you can decorate with edible flower petals, and/or serve with whipped cream and fruit.
The Clandonald Separate School
There have been many schools in the Vermilion area over the years but one of the most well-known and prominent was the Clandonald Separate School. First opened in September of 1929, this school operated with grades one through eight. For those students that wanted high school classes, that was offered through a paid tuition beginning in 1930. The school was part of the convent run by the Benedictine Sisters, with Sister Ruth serving as the main teacher. She would serve from 1929 to 1933 Eventually, Mrs. Sherback out of Vermilion was
in place in 1930 to help as the teacher for grades one to eight. Eventually, the Benedictine Sisters took over the entire school’s teaching needs. One big reason for this was that money was tight and the Sister were able to teach for a very low cost. The first ever graduate from this school was Tony Convey. The school would operate under the Convent until 1932 when it changed hands and the Sisters of St. Joseph took over. In 1936, a new two-room school was built, with part of the Convent also still being used for teaching purposes. Father Gillis served as chair of the school at this time, until he went overseas during the Second World War. While away, he paid

faster than using my flour sifter. The right amount of sugar must be used, as I have found that cutting back on the sugar reduces the height of the cake and produces a tougher cake that lacks flavour. This is a cake that requires: the right ingredients, in the right order and handled by the right method. Good Luck and happy spring. Angel Food Cake with Flower Petals 1 cup cake flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup powdered icing sugar 13 large egg whites (about 1 2/3 cups) 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1 cup granulated white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Sift the cake flour, the salt and the powdered sugar together. Separate out 12 room temperature egg whites and one refrigerated egg white. Beat

In 1969, the Separate School District was dissolved and the county took over the school building. Eventually, those buildings associated with the school

For someone that grew up playing ball on local school diamonds, Kitscoty ball tournaments, and remembering the Tolland Cubs community team Dad had once played for, a trip to Chicago was going to mean an MLB pilgrimage out of the trip. Thank you MLB baseball scouts for setting up that once in a lifetime set of circumstances. What kid playing ball at the J.R. Robson backstops hasn’t thought of stepping on the field to play a game at a major league facility? I was left a little disappointed that 1914 built Wrigley looked far too ‘new’ from renovations compared to my recent visit to Fenway in Boston…and the fabled outfield ivy was still rather leafless. If anything since coming back, it’s been getting a hand to the alarm button for squeezing in more sleep that has been needed. Because let’s face it… it’s spring time around here…and there are plenty of jobs needing more energy to get a hand to. If you ever happened to get a hand or come home with a ball from a Major League game, would love to hear the story.

The rebuilt line will consist of an approximately 22-kilometre segment (designated as Transmission Line 7L134) between the Vegreville 709S Substation and the approved Vincent 2019S Substation, and an approximately 77-kilometre segment (designated as new Transmission Line 7L65) between the Vincent 2019S Substation and the Vermilion 710S Substation. ATCO Electric Ltd. is also seeking approval to alter the approved Transmission Line 7LA65 and to alter the existing 144 kV Transmission Line 7L129. 5. Do you watch soccer on T.V? Who is your favorite team/player? I watch some soccer. I watched worlds last year and France was my favourite team.

7. Do you practice soccer in your spare time? If so, who do you practice with? I practice soccer at home with my dad after he comes home from work.
8. Why do you like soccer? I feel soccer is a good sport and I like to run a lot. Vermilion Soccer Association (VSA) is built around player participation. The Mini age levels (age 5-11) are progressive in skill development, and positioning. The Youth age levels (age 12-19) compete in District Tier IV competition. Tier IV is non-selective with emphasis on continued skill development within a team play environment. VSA is a member of the Lakeland District Soccer Association. Vermilion RCMP Respond To Shooting Incident

County of Vermilion River , Alta - On April 27 at approxim a t e l y 1:10 A M Ve r m i l i o n R C M P responded to a report of male being shot in the leg at a rural residence, East of Vermil-
ion. On arrival, a 27 year old male resident was found suffering from a gunshot wound. The injuries were noted to be serious but not life threatening. The male was transported from the scene via ambulance. Due to the serious nature of the wound the male was transferred to Edmonton via STARS Air Ambulance. No suspects were located and the
RCMP does not believe this was a random act. The Vermilion RCMP detachment with the assistance of Edmonton General Investigations Section and RCMP Forensic Identification Services continue to investigate. As this matter remains under investigation no further details are available at this time.

County of Vermilion River, Alta – Just before noon on May 1, 2019 the Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of a dangerous driver on Highway 16 at Highway 893. Immediately afterwards, a second call was received reporting a stolen Dodge truck matching the description of the driving complaint. The vehicle was located a short distance
away but was able to elude police by travelling through fences and driving off road. Police quickly located the vehicle, abandoned in a field. Police Dog Services from both Lloydminster and Cold Lake successfully tracked the suspect to a wooded area where he surrendered without incident. 47 year old Curtis Dean SCHAAF of Edmonton has been charged with 13 offences that include: • Theft over $5000 x 2 • Dangerous Driving • Driving While Prohibited

The Town of Vermilion celebrated their Clean Up Week with a barbeque for volunteers on May 3. During the first week of May, the town distributed requests and posted m a p s t hrou g h s o c ial m e d ia . T hey received calls from several volunteers; individuals, families, and community groups and organizations to cover certain areas. The town supplied garbage bags, safety vests, and provided garbage
p i c k- u p. T hroug hout t he week , parks, streets, and neighbourhoods were freed of waste and volunteers commented on the awareness of the program and how the habit is contagious. “ It is great that ever yone gets to g et h er a n d c l ea n s u p t h e tow n. Everyone always pulls together to do things in Vermilion; helping to make it look better and stronger,” said volunteer, Kirby Whitlock. W i t h t h e c o o l w e a t h e r, g u e s t s enjoyed barbequed hamburgers in the
council chambers. “Without the volunteers we couldn’t cover the town. One of the comments we always receive from visitors is on cleanliness. With this being the big clean-up after winter, many residents often continue throughout the year,” said Mayor, Caroline McAuley.

How To Reseed Bare Spots In Your Lawn (NC) Bare spots happen on almost every lawn. They can be caused by h e av y fo ot tr af fi c or r o u g h w i nter weather. Whatever the reason, if the spot is larger than a foot wide, it’s important to patch it. Otherwise, weeds will quickly fill the space, or a deep rut can develop if the soil erodes without grass to hold it in place. For tunately, fixing bare spots is easy. Here are some tips from The Home Depot Canada to help you get started. Choose your seeds. A good rule of thumb is to try to use the same mix of seeds planted in the surrounding area so the new growth will match what’s already there. If your
bare spot is from high traffic, it might be a good idea to patch it with a seed blend meant for high-traf fic areas. Also, if the bare spot is in a shady spot under a tree, use a shade mix. Spread the seeds. Spread out the grass seeds accordi n g to p ac k ag e d ire c t i o n s, eve n l y covering the entire area at the thickness stated. Cover the grass seed very lightly with soil, no deeper than about one- quar ter inch thick. Ver y lightly tamp down the soil on top of the grass seed. Use a fertilizer. A p p l y a l i g ht fe r t i l izer, s u c h a s Vigoro Lawn Fer tilizer, all over the patch. You can cover the patch with straw to keep the seeds in place.
Hydrate the area. Water lightly early in the morning and keep it damp until you see the new grass sprouting, whic h should happen within about two weeks. Make sure the area stays damp and moist. Maintain your new grass. Once the new grass gets growing, water it less often but for longer periods of time to encourage deep root grow th. Don’t mow the new grass until it’s about three inches tall – about three weeks’ worth of growth.

What Do Moms Really Want For Mother’s Day? Are you having trouble finding the perfect Mother’s Day present? If so, then perhaps you should consider that what your mom really wants is time — both to share with her loved ones and to enjoy by herself. Here are a few ways to give it to her. PLAN A DAY OF ACTIVITIES Plan a full day of activities for the family so Mom can sit back and enjoy spending time with her loved ones, without the hassle of having to manage

mentoring, and taking or teaching classes can be a great way to meet others. Think about the kinds of relationships you are looking for and take it slow. You may want to start by just building confidence and comfor t in public spaces before joining a group. Reach out to family and consider building or rebuilding relationships. If you are physically separated, explore how ele c troni c c ommuni c ation may be helpful for you. Remember, we’re wired for connection but it may take a little time and effort. Lonelines s that per sists c an be linked to depression, anxiet y, and increased physical health problems so if loneliness persists or is negatively affecting your life, consider reaching out to a mental health professional in our community.

Emergency Preparedness – Why Bother?

May 5 – 11, 2019 is Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada. Some of us may have made note of this; the majority of us probably shrug, and continue on our way. After all, we might think, nothing really bad has happened in our region during our lifetime. Sure, we have had some fierce winter storms, dust storms, some bad road accidents, and the occasional funnel cloud or tornado sightings; but nothing to worry about, eh? We’re used to those things. Besides, if anything were to happen, we’d all pitch in and help. That has always been the rural way. BUT, in case you haven’t noticed, even in Alberta, disasters have been occurring more frequently. Some of the costliest have occurred between 2003 and 2018,
with wildfires in Slave Lake, hailstorms in the Calgary area, and most recently the Fort McMurray fire, from which the region is still recovering. If there have been any lessons learned from these events, it is that preparation is essential. To that end, right across Canada, governments have adopted the Incident Command System to formalize and standardize training and response. So why do we remain complacent? Why do we think we are immune? Because it has never happened to us? But it might…and we are, typically, not ready. And we should be, because disaster responders may not be able to get to us immediately, and we need to be prepared to be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours. So what can we, as individuals, do? Make an Emergency Plan and Emer-
gency Kit for your family, and your pets. Learn how to be prepared by contacting Alberta Emergency Management Agency at www.aema.alberta.ca. Other information sources for emergency preparedness include: Public Safety Canada at www.GetPrepared.ca or www.mGetPrepared.ca; Environment Canada at www. ec.gc.ca. Contact your local municipality to volunteer with your local Emergency Management group, or join the amazing people who are tasked with operating your local reception centre(s) in case of an evacuation order. Learn about Emergency Social Services through your local FCSS. Receive invaluable, free, training to equip you with the skills needed to function during a disaster. Be aware. Be ready. Be proactive. Join your local emergency management team.

Vegreville, Alta. – On April 26, 2019 at approximately 10:00 p.m., Vegreville RCMP members responded to a complaint of a sexual assault within the town limits of Vegreville. A 29 -year- old woman was walking home from work when she was grabbed from behind by the suspect, who then assaulted the victim, and fled the scene. The suspect is unknown to the victim.
The victim was treated by EMS, and released to the care of family. The suspect is described as follows: • Dark skinned, • Goatee, • Black hoodie or jacket, • Black backpack, • Medium height. At this time, no suspect as been identified. A composite sketch is being released and the RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the male suspect. At this time, no other occur-

all three winners going on to compete in Districts on February 23 in Clandonald. Our Highway 897 Interclub consists of Kitscoty 4H Beef Club, 3 Cities 4H Beef Club and Mawayne 4H Beef Club members. On April 20 all members were invited to do a grooming workshop in Lloydminster. We washed, dried and clipped our steers. It was a busy day, but the animals looked great by the end. On April 28 the Kitscoty Club took part in a Judging Clinic in Lloydminster. Our members learnt a lot that day. They judged beef steers, beef heifers, welding, cupcakes, light horses and mini horses.
They were also judged on oral reasons. The kids did great. May has come fast and so will our achievement day and sale day. The Kitscoty 4H Club will have their own achievement day on May 25 in Marwayne at the Marwayne arena. Start time is 12 p.m.. Our Highway 897 Interclub show and sale will be on May 29 in the Marwayne arena. Start time is 10 a.m., 5 p.m. supper and 7 p.m. sale. Submitted It is such an honour to be in Red Deer to accept the Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships Exceptional Host Site Award – North for 2018-19 on behalf of our Host Committee which includes Mel Dary, Shannon Leonard, Carla Myshaniuk & ourselves Glynn & Angie McDonald.
