Approximately 200 dancers met at Lakeland College in Vermilion for the 29th Annual Vermilion Dance Festival on April 26 – 27, hosted by the Vermilion Dance Association (VDA). The theme of this year’s festival was, ‘Dancing is like dreaming with your feet.’ VDA member Kamdyn Maron said, “I love to dance because I get a lot of exercise and it’s a lot of fun; Miss Taylor is awesome!” Dance schools participating travelled from Vermilion, Mannville, Marwayne, Vegreville, Oyen, and Camrose. “It ’s fun to have a festival in our hometown. We are thrilled to the moon and back,” said Miss Taylor. Janelle Mailhot went on to say that the festival is VDA’s annual fundraiser which allows them to keep putting on
the event and keep registration low for families. She likes putting on the event so that people from all over get the opportunity to explore and support the community. “We would like to thank our sponsors. All of the participants love having the opportunity to perform. Many of the studios have been coming for years and the feedback has been great,” said Mailhot. Adjudicator, Kelsey Chance Nilsson, travelled from Vancouver and offered video adjudication to help the students. During jazz solos she said, “There’s a level of attack that needs to happen; nice work. I could feel your energy reaching beyond your fingertips!” The VDA Year End Recital will be on May 7 at 7 p.m. Admission will be $5 or $20 per family, with five and under Mercedes Tobin. being free.

2nd Chance Trail Ride provided information on organ and tissue donation at Western Financial in Vermilion on April 24. “This week is national organ and tissue donation awareness week. It is important because without someone donating, my husband would have died eight years ago when he received a double lung. So many people are on waiting lists. We are visiting registries in the hopes to inspire someone to sign up,” said Fae Irvine. Fae and Morris Irvine will be hosting the 8th Annual 2nd Chance Trail Ride on May 11, from Lindbergh to Elk Point. Horses and wagons will be travelling the Iron Horse Trail fundraising for organ and tissue donation. Twenty-five dollar tickets include a catered meal, speakers, a live and silent auction, and a dance to follow. “We like to promote the attitude of gratitude to celebrate recipients and our appreciation for donors. We enjoy having a way to give back, and over the years have opened five apartments in Edmonton with GoodHearts, as well as offering gift cards to those undergoing their transplant journey. The Vermilion Rotary Club has begun its annual Canadian Flag Program that will continue throughout the summer. According to Craig Brown, Rotary Flag Project chairman, the Rotary has paid $75 thousand of their $100 thousand commitment to the Valley Lodge Project. They also committed $20 thou-
sand to the St. Jerome’s Inclusive Playground Project in addition to annual donations such as the music festival, school scholarships, and community sports teams. For a $60 donation, Rotar y Club members can drop off and pick up flags for your yard before and after every long weekend from May - September. “The online orders have been very
busy the first few days, so we anticipate several hundred flags around town again this year. People are very excited to have the flags back again for another year. We had many people say at the garage sale, ‘Make sure you get me a flag this year.’ New this year - anyone wanting to order a flag can stop at Webb’s Ford or Webb’s Machinery and place their flag

Lakeland College hosted satellite events in Vermilion and Lloydminster on April 23, allowing people the opportunity to find out more about the future of technology around the world. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, Lakeland College President and CEO said that speaker, Dr. Taddy Blecher, shared concrete information about what they are doing in South Africa. “ They are rethinking the current education system and setting up a learning environment based on the development of the whole person. What they did was implement brain based learning and leveraged technology. Thinking out of the box they were able to take students who would have never had the opportunity and now had the chance to succeed, becoming CEO’s of different companies.
Technology is so amazing right now, and through the use of technology, we can do things that we couldn’t 20 years ago,� said Wainwright Stewart. S h e n ote d t h at p o s t s e c o n d ar y educators should be focussing on a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. She also expressed that overall during the conference there were some really cool things presented on virtual reality by a music composer, artificial intelligence, and robotics. “There are people who believe that once you are born that’s all you can do (fixed). Studies have shown that is not always the case. Every individual child is brilliant; we just have to find where their passions and talents lie. The speakers in this summit are looking way beyond our human imagination. Move Your Mood Program Expands To Vermilion

Youth in Vermilion and area may participate in a new Alberta Health Services (AHS) program designed to boost both mental and physical health. Move Your Mood is an eight-week healthy lifestyle program for children and youth promoting the benefits of physical activity, healthy eating and positive coping to enhance mental and physical wellness.
The program originated in Red Deer and is now expanding as a pilot program in Vermilion. “We know that youth are experiencing increased stress and worry,� said Denise Fredeen, Move Your Mood Coordinator, AHS. “This program provides a great way for youth to experience how to move and fuel their body, and learn coping strategies to manage stress and promote positive mental health.� “This program really applies the learn-
ing and creates new healthy habits,� said Fredeen. “Ultimately, our participants do better in school, improve attention and focus, increase their overall health and selfconfidence, and solidify a better connection with their family and friends.� Youth in Grade 5 to 9 can be recommended to the program through staff working with them in the school community. Staff reach out to parents, who then make the choice to register.

Last week we enjoyed chocolate chip cookies with a twist by using cut up mini eggs in place of the chocolate chips. A double batch was soon gone, as using the mini eggs was a well received twist to the classic chocolate chip cookie. Dads cookies are another classic recipe to add to your collection. They are easy to make, and have the characteristic oatmeal coconut flavor that Dads Cookies are famous for. The Dads cookie recipe in historically was so good that a whole cookie empire was founded on it. The

benefit of making homemade cookies is that you are using wholesome and simple ingredients. When you buy packaged cookies, you may be getting junk oils with trans-fats for the fat, instead of healthful fats like real butter. The sugar content in factory cookies is usually higher and they may be made with glucose fructose or high fructose corn syrup, which can be damaging to the liver. While no one would advocate a steady diet of cookies, an occasional treat, made with wholesome ingredients and the absence of chemical food additives is always a better alternative than the factory made cookies. Dads cookies have coconut and oatmeal, and both ingredients have their own unique nutritional benefits. Coconut contains a healthful medium chain fatty acid that is known to help the
body metabolize body fat and reduce inflammation. Oatmeal contain a special fiber called beta-glucan, which has been proven to have the beneficial effect of removing cholesterol from the digestive track, before it can enter the blood stream. Recent research has discovered that a compound in the oats called avenanthramides, helps to protect the good LDL cholesterol from oxidation. The aroma and flavour of fresh baked cookies is worth the extra effort to whip up a batch from this well tested recipe. They are perfect for school lunches, to have on hand for spring seeding or with a tall glass of milk. Chocolate Chip Dads Cookies 1 cup butter 1 scant cup brown sugar (not packed) 1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg 1 cup all purpose unbleached flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cups rolled oat 1 cup unsweetened fine or medium coconut 1 cup of chocolate chips Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cream the butter, then add the brown sugar and beat well. Add the vanilla and the egg and beat well to combine. Add the remaining dry ingredients, sprinkling the baking powder and baking soda to distribute them and then mix well to combine all the ingredients. Drop balls about the size of a large walnut onto a greased cookie sheet or onto parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Press the balls with a fork to flatten. Bake for approx 9 minutes.

Introductory Cree Course Available At Lakeland

(Lloydminster, Alta.) Lakeland College is offering lessons on Cree language and culture this spring. Participants of this introductory course will learn structure, phonics and conversational Cree. Taught by Clint Chocan, Lakeland’s manager of Indigenous support services, the lessons will also provide insights into Cree culture. “For First Nations people, spirituality is the connection of everything that exists – culture, ceremony, nature, kinship, language, all creation,” he says. “In the

Cree language, there is no literal translation for most words, it’s all about meaning. If you don’t understand the root of the word or the phrase that you are trying to express, then you’re not able to translate it.” A variety of learning techniques and strategies will be used to aid participants in their studies, including chants and songs, visual and audio aids, and total physical response exercises. “The students will have a good understanding of what to listen for and how to develop not only words but phrases as well. By the time they are done, they should be able to form some sentences for conversation,” says Chocan.
“For someone who wants to understand their culture or a culture, they would go to the language because the language can connect them and teach them why things are the way they are. Some of the ceremonies and beliefs that we have are explained through just one word. Once you learn how those words connect with the beliefs, you’ll get a clear picture of the Indigenous cultures and the world view and perspective of First Nations.” Since 1994, Chocan has worked to revitalize the Cree language. He developed resources for the Cree immersion
language program and taught in Onion Lake, Sask., schools. Chocan joined Lakeland in 2016 and has led a number of Indigenous support service initiatives, including a reconciliation speaker series, raising of the Treaty 6 and Métis flags on both campuses, Cree language workshops and more. Introduction to Cree language and culture is offered at the Lloydminster campus two evenings each week from April 29 to June 10, 2019. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Registration is available online.

Crop Rotation: As Old As The Hills
When agricultural land is used for monoculture crop farming over several conse cutive years, the soil becomes impove rished and the land eventually has to be abandoned because of poor yields. The best way to increase soil potential in agriculture is to practise crop rotation, a process known in Europe since the Middle Ages. This farming method is a key to safe-
guarding soil fertility and is also an efficient way to combat plant diseases, weeds, and harmful insects. Rotating crops on the same piece of land over varying time periods, usually between four to six years, also helps to improve soil structure. This is because of differential root morphology, which means that successive plantings draw specific

nutritional elements from the soil and restore other fertilizing elements that are beneficial to subsequent crops. For example, legumes, when planted in rotation, increase the soil’s nitrogen levels. Crop rotation can also reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides, which are usually a significant expense in large scale farming. From a financial point of view, planting a different crop every year in a four-year cycle will help compensate for a drop in the price of any one of these crops, as only a
quarter of the operation will be affected. Crop rotation is not something that can be practiced indiscriminately. For the rotation schedule to be successful, it is very important to choose the right sequence of crops, as some crops harm each other while others complement each other. Home gardeners might be interested to hear that the advantages of crop rotation can also benefit urban vegetable or flower gardens, where access to land is more limited.

Dairy Students Want The Best And They’re Finding It At Lakeland

Lakeland College students delve into what it takes to lead in the dairy industry. As the second dairy Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF) unit to ever learn and work in Lakeland’s new Dairy Learning Centre, these animal science technology students agree their education is exceeding their expectations. “Lakeland is renowned across Canada as one of the best schools for agriculture,” says Ron Eggenberger, who hails from a purebred sheep operation near Kleefeld, Man., and is the dairy SMF unit’s calf manager. “It’s completely different here with the new Dairy Learning Centre and everything else on the Student-Managed Farm – you don’t get anything like this anywhere else. One of the big advantages that we have here is that the technology is phenomenal.” Opened in 2017, the Dairy Learning Centre features state-of-the-art-technology in robotic and conventional milking and feeding systems that allows students to explore both styles of production. “With all of the technology here you really get a sense of what is currently in industry,” says Jodie Stoker, the dairy SMF unit’s genetics manager from Deroche, B.C. The facility also features a Lely Vector automatic feeding system, three grouphouse calf rooms – two of which use automatic milk feeding systems – and dairy management software, including DeLaval’s Herd Navigator that tests progesterone levels in milk and monitors lactate dehydrogenase. “The Herd Navigator gives us a lot of information. For instance, it notifies you that the cow has a health issue before they even show physical signs of it,” says Jonathan Lange, the dairy SMF unit leader who came to Lakeland from Dufresene, Man.
With guidance from faculty and farm staff, the dairy SMF unit manages 120 lactating cows, which are par t of a 290-head herd. Students are involved with managing heifers, herd health visits with the vet, milking, nutritional consultant visits, sustainability management, genetic selection, hoof trimming and more. “You get to work with the animals a lot, but the biggest advantage about this program is that it helps build your confidence, which is really important as a producer,” says Lange. Improving genetics The unit is making great strides in achieving their goal to improve the production, health and longevity of the herd through genetic advancements by using the technologies available in the Dairy Learning Centre. Elevate, a new genomic testing system that provides DNA test results from tissue samples, allows the students to see the genetic ranking of each cow in the herd. “There are so many tiny details that you could miss that might bring a lot of dollars back to your business and operation – I’m really learning the complexity of dairy farming here,” says Jordan Bruins, the unit’s public relations manager. His family farm is near Tees, Alta. The dair y SMF unit also made a significant purchase this year to improve the herd’s genetics: Chubanna Armani Marawa. Purchased from a Lakeland alumnus, Andrew Wildeboer, Class of 2001 herd health technology, the cow comes from Chubanna Holsteins. To initiate this purchase, the unit put together a proposal for the dean of agricultural sciences to approve that covered profit margins, expenditures such as transportation and feed costs, potential risks and more. “It really makes you think about what
goes into making a smart decision when purchasing an animal and by purchasing this cow, we can quickly improve the genetics of our herd,” says Stoker. Team work With 11 students from across Canada on the dairy SMF unit this year, learning to effectively work and communicate as a team has been a key lesson for the unit. “I think we’re all working well together to do new and innovative things on the farm to enhance operations. It definitely prepares you for real life,” says Nicki Meier, the dairy SMF unit’s nutrition manager whose family has a dairy farm near Abbotsford, B.C. While the opportunity to make six-figure decisions with Lakeland’s award-winning experiential learning model is the main draw for most, the dairy SMF unit praises the college’s comprehensive classroom experience too. “They have some of the best advisors and instructors here, and great curriculum where you are learning a lot of in-depth information,” says Meier.

Lakeland proud Beyond gaining valuable experience in the Dairy Learning Centre, members of the dairy SMF unit are finding themselves serving as ambassadors for Lakeland and it’s a role they’ve taken on with pride. “When I was wearing my Lakeland jacket back in B.C., people recognized that I was from Lakeland,” says Stoker, noting other students were recognized in Manitoba and elsewhere too. “People are always really interested in what we do. It gives us an opportunity to not only promote the college, but agriculture and its advancements in technology today.” Lakeland dairy fast facts: • 38 litres is the average herd milk production per cow per day • Two-day production exceeded 9,000 litres in fall 2018 • Lakeland had its first classified excellent cow in 2018: EX 90 – Vermilion Lauthority Adriana • Recipient of eight Milk Quality Awards from Alberta Milk

Hope In Motion Hosts Another Successful Event
Hope in Motion

Approximately $16,000 was raised and this money will go directly to Hope In Motion once again hosted a individuals and families that are undergosuccessful fund raising event thanks to ing treatment for cancer. Hope In Motion the support of individuals and businesses has worked in conjunction with Haying in Submitted
the 30s for over 10 years. Donated items were used as raffle items, door prizes, silent and live auction items. Entertainment was provided by the Mennonite Youth Choir and Rose Country. Once
again a big thank you to the individuals and business that donated items as well as those who stepped up to bid on those items. We hope to see everyone again next year.
