Indigenous and government dignitaries gathered in Lloydminster to celebrate the soft opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of the new Gold Horse Casino on December 20. A grand entry included chiefs, flag carriers, and dancers that were followed by a flag song and a victory song played by the Seekaskootch Drum Group from Onion Lake Cree Nation. The ceremony began with an opening prayer, and Chief Reginald Bellerose, SIGA’s Board Chair, thanked key partners for their collaboration. Chief, Bobby Cameron, from the Feder-
ation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) said, “I want to thank our Creator and each and every one of you for being here today. $1 billion from SIGA has gone into the economy, and this is the seventh SIGA casino. We are here to celebrate and support, but more importantly to be a part of this historic day as a partnership.” The land for the development is owned by Little Pine First Nation, who was responsible for the site development. The facility landlord is the Border Tribal Council, who leases the casino property to SIGA, who is the organization responsible for the casino’s operation. The City of Lloydminster also worked closely with all of these groups during the casino’s development,
and will continue to do so in the future. Government of Saskatchewan MLA, Colleen Young, acknowledged Treaty 6 Territory and said, “The Gold Horse Casino is a great addition that has created approximately 200 jobs in our community with additional jobs throughout the construction phase. It will bring people from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and beyond. Congratulations on taking this vision and turning it into a reality!” The facility is over 49,000 square feet and features more than 250 of the latest slot machines, 18 electronic table games, and five live table games. Gold Horse Casino also houses an event center for live entertainment, banquets or meetings
as well as a bar and grill, and a deli. City of Lloydminster Mayor, Gerald Aalbers noted that the community had been buzzing nearing the completion of this facility, and he felt that the casino certainly adds value to the city. SIGA President and CEO, Z ane Hansen said, “The feeling of strength and support behind our company makes us feel really good. SIGA is the largest First Nations employer across Canada, and a top 50 organization employer. The facility that we unveil today is absolutely state of the art; I think we have a property the community can be proud of for years to come. Continued on page 2

The Western Institute of Emergency Education received their licence for their new Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course on December 17. Now people don’t have to leave home and can get it right here in the community. Our delivery methods are flexible with part-time or full-time options,” said programs coordinator, Shane Croke. The program has not been available to the public in Vermilion for the past six years. According to Croke, in 2019 the new EMR standards will be put into place across Alberta. So here we are, just two days away from Christmas!!! I can imagine the excitement is building in ever yone’s home as they wait for St. Nicholas to come, but I urge you to remember the reason for the season, the birth of Jesus Christ. Never let the idiotic words ‘politi-
cally correct’ discourage you from celebrating the true meaning of Christmas. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of all this bull about this and that being offensive when it has been around for decades and in some cases centuries such as Christmas. I don’t tell anyone what holiday they can or can’t celebrate publicly and I certainly would not tell them to change how they have celebrated it. Each day it is preached to us to accept and love the diversity we have in this
country, but when I have to start changing my beliefs and how I celebrate them to appease someone else I get a little frustrated. I hope you have the courage to celebrate Christmas as it is meant to be celebrated and not worr y about whether someone else finds it offensive. With my rant now over, I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas. I wish you all the joy of making new memories and lasting traditions that can be passed from generation to generation. With the

Sheer Statement On Trudeau’s Energy Sector Bailout
Submitted O t t aw a , O N – T h e H o n o u r a b l e Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued a statement on the Liberal government’s $1.6-billion bailout package for Canada’s energy sector: “Justin Trudeau has wanted to phase out Canada’s energy industry since day one. “In his Canada, there is no oil and gas sector. He is ashamed of it and wants it
gone. “If the Prime Minister truly cared about energy workers - if he wanted a future with oil and gas in Canada – he would immediately drop the No-MorePipelines Bill C-69. He would use the considerable powers he has to get the Trans Mountain Expansion built and other pipeline projects back on the table instead of simply throwing money at a political problem he wishes would go away.
“But he doesn’t. He wants to see the industry fail. This has been his plan all along. “Today’s handout is nothing more than a desperate, election-year attempt to trick western Canadians into thinking he cares. He is trying to save a handful of Liberal seats, nothing more. I know Canadians will see it for what it is. “I am proud of our energy sector. When it is allowed to grow, it creates wealth and prosperity right across the

country. It makes giant technological leaps and provides the entire world with a blueprint for responsible energy development. And Justin Trudeau is strangling it to death. “As Prime Minister, I will end Justin Trudeau’s war on the energy industry. I will repeal Bill C-69. I will cancel the ban on shipping on the BC coast. I will scrap the carbon tax, clean up the regulatory regime, and end foreign meddling in pipeline approvals.”

St. Jeromes is very excited to be building an inclusive playground that will provide a safe play area for limited mobility children. The new playground will include a smooth rubber surface so that it will be accessible for wheel chair and limited mobility students. There will also be a number of apparatus specifically designed for students with all levels of mobility. The Lions have graciously donated $15,000 towards the project. First Annual Food Can-Struction Challenge Lakeland College employees throughout the Vermilion campus and Lloydminster campus showed their spirit of giving by participating in the first annual Food Can-Struction Challenge. Departments were encouraged to create a Christmas-themed structure from items that could be donated to local food banks. Fourteen departments took part with staff donating more than 2,500 items, including 800 cans of soup, 320 boxes of pasta, 200 cans of beans, 50 cans of tuna, 43 cans of fruit and 30 boxes of rice. The majority of items were donated to the Vermilion Food Bank and the Salvation Army Food Bank in Lloydminster, with some food remaining at Lakeland for the Students’ Association food banks at each campus. BTPS Meeting At Clandonald School
Submitted On December 17, the Board of Trustees of Buffalo Trail Public Schools and senior administration met with a large crowd of concerned parents and community members regarding the future of Clandonald School. Board chair, Darcy Eddleston, reassured the crowd that the meeting was not about closure, but about providing programming options that would be economically sustainable. Bob Allen, Superintendent, went on to explain to the packed house that without new families moving into the Clandonald community, an average of 20 students for the next few school years is the new reality. With 94% of a school’s operating budget being dedicated to staffing, the projected
education children receive at Clandonald School and that there was no action regarding Clandonald School in front of the Board at present. “At the end of this evening, the Board has two questions: 1) will the community support the continued operation of the school, and 2) is there anything happening in the community that might influence the future enrollment of the school?” The ball was now in the community’s court. Mrs. Dutchak, school secretary, introduced the school staff. She stressed that “our children need to be educated in our community.” Leslie Cusack, Division 7 Councillor for the County of Vermilion River, brought word of the County’s support for all small schools within the County. “Schools are the heart of our community,” he said,
“We are very proud of the achievements of our past students.” Jade McCormack spoke on behalf of the Friends of Clandonald. She explained that the organization was founded in 2014 when Clandonald School lost their junior high. “Our motto is: Grow the School, Grow the Community,” she shared. Four years ago, the FOC raised $52,000 with an auction of donated items. The funds were used to purchase a lot and mobile home in Clandonald. Tamara Stachniak, school principal, shared the results of a recent survey she sent out to gauge parent support for two possible staffing scenarios: 1) 2.0 FTE teachers with a 0.5 FTE principal which would mean that all classes would be triplesplit and there would be a couple of grade 1 - 6 configurations, 2) 2.5 FTE teachers with an off-site administrator (which would mean less triple-split classes). The majority of parents were supportive no matter which scenario might become reality. Mr. Allen went on to reassure those attending that Buffalo Trail is proud of the

CAO George Rogers said, “It’s my pleasure to introduce our new Director of Finance, Jay Warawa.” Warawa is a chartered professional accountant who moved from the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River. He previously worked in the Peace Country, and territorial government. He has been a director of finance for the past 10 years and in finance for the past 15 – 18 years, so his experience is sure to be an asset to Vermilion. “I’m thrilled to be here. What attracted me to the area was that I have spent time assisting my brothers with a hobby farm north of Minburn. Having moved closer, I will be able to help out on a more regular basis. I look forward to the benefits of living, working, and recreating in Vermilion,” said Warawa.
Sgt. Jane Boehr delivered a presentation on behalf of the Vermilion RCMP Detachment regarding their statistics from July 1 - December 18. According to Boehr, in that time, they received 587 calls for service. Of those, 56 charges were laid or recommended. She also noted that a crime reduction unit has been assisting in eastern Alberta, and said that they have been a huge asset throughout the area. “Overall, we have a very safe community, and it is in part to the work that your team does, so thank you,” said Mayor Caroline McAuley. In new business, a motion was made for council to accept the construction proposal from SureForm Contracting to build the new wastewater treatment facility and approved the total project costs of $19,231,587.56. Discussion took place including that the design has capacity for a population of 7,500 as well as that projected growth estimated it would be 2037 before the town would need an expansion. “The facility has been overdue for
replacement for over eight years,” said Councillor McCullough before the motion was carried. In Economic Development, council approved an extension of the sale of lots in Yellowhead Business Park at $99,000 per acre until December 31, 2019. Councillor Thompson congratulated Councillor Yaceyko on being elected the Library Board Chair. Discussion arose regarding the upcoming participation of council members at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) conference in Whistler, British Columbia. After weighing the value of the conference, the time constraints, and the cost; council voted to boycott the ICSC conference based on the comments previously made by the mayor of Whistler regarding Alberta oil companies. “I think it is detrimental that we take a stand and let people see how the economy has been affected by the suffering of our oil industry,” said Councillor Hender- Vermilion’s new Director of Finance, Jay Warawa. The 1st ever ‘Rural Women’ event will be hosted by the Vermilion Agricultural Society at their Reunion Hall on January 16, from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Featuring women who specialize in herd health management, agronomy, insurance, and verified beef production, the conference will also host a number of other industry specialists as speakers. Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to learn different strategies for their work, marketing and succession planning. They will also have the opportunity to make the most of their day by networking with other women in agriculture. “A face to face interaction or handshake can be a key in any industry, but especially in agriculture. Rural roots still run deep in Vermilion and all of the Lakeland area. I
really hope that people take the chance and try something new by registering. I feel that northern Alberta needs to be put on the map; we are extremely agriculturally based. Northern Alberta definitely has a lot to offer, whether it is livestock or crops,” said event coordinator, Kaylie Franklin. Upon registering each attendant will have their name entered into win a Farm To Fabulous prize pack valued at over $650! “Being a women driven event, we wanted to give women the opportunity to network and communicate. We want participants to take knowledge away in order to better their operations. The more knowledge you have, the further you can go,” said Franklin. Continued from page 6 The FOC supports the community, too, providing funds to the seniors’ organization, Clandonald Friendship Centre. She pointed out that the seniors interact with the children and are a big part of the community. The latest FOC initiative is a family rental subsidy to encourage young families to move to the community. One family with three children has already committed to moving and their school-age child will begin attending Clandonald School in January. As well, the FOC has contacted Corinne McGirr from the County of Vermilion River and she will be doing an assessment of community needs. The Friends of Clandonald will continue to work toward building the school and the community. Representing the young families in the area, John, Kaitlyn, and Rose Snider presented a video of some families of young children speaking of their support of Clandonald School. John spoke of the long lasting relationships he enjoys from his own attendance at Glandonaid School and shared that there are 10 children projected for Rose’s class, five years away. Mrs. Stachniak outlined another initiative where she has invited families that homeschool to consider the homeschooling available through Buffalo Trail for grades K to 12. These families have also
The Vermilion Voice | December 25, 2018 been invited to Clandonald School’s Open House on February 27, where students showcase to their parents what they have been learning in school. Should these families choose, they could homeschool in the morning, and then send their children to Clandonald School in the afternoon for a blended program. Heather Oddan and Sharon Jaremco spoke on behalf of the business community in Clandonald. Heather felt the relationship between the school and local businesses was a win-win situation for both. The business owners appreciate the business that the school and parents provide--Mrs. Jaremco spoke about how the hot lunch program is a support for her catering company. The business owners stressed how pleased they are to see the
students and staff in their building and how proud they are of past students, too. The members of the Glandonaid Friendship Centre were represented by Shirley Osinchuk. The ladies provide a hot lunch (perogies and ham) on the first Friday of every month, and it is the students’ favourite hot lunch. As well, the senior ladies do crafts with the students twice a month after school. “We love our opportunity to work with the children,” she said. “The children are so good and so polite.” Mrs. Stachniak, the school principal, confirmed what an amazing relationship has been established between the seniors and the students, and said the seniors were a valuable component of the school family. With the community presentations
complete, Mr. Allen pointed out that the positive culture of the school was recognized and said if he could use one word to capture the last 45 minutes, it would be “passion.” He then asked the crowd to remember question 1: Would the community support the continued operation of Clandonald School? With a show of hands, the crowd demonstrated a resounding “yes.” Mr. Allen added, “BTPS is committed to doing all we can to keep the school operational.” Board Chair, Darcy Eddleston, thanked everyone for attending and wrapped up the evening. “We had no doubt of this community’s support,” he said, “but we wanted to have that conversation with you so you would know what September would look like.”

The staff at VES would like to wish each and every one of you a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas spent with the people you treasure the most. In the New Year, we resume school on January 7. On January 8, we have our first 2019 assembly at 10:45 and on January 21 we have our first 2019 school council meeting at 7:00. VES’s Canley Cup Floor Hockey Tournament wrapped up on December 17 with the All-Star game (staff vs. students), and the seventh annual Teddy Bear Toss. The stuffies rained down after the first student goal, and will be donated to Santa’s Anonymous for next year. The VES families’ generosity was amazing once again. On December 19, members of the school council made the VES staff an absolutely amazing lunch. There were so many delicious and varied dishes. The staff thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated this heartfelt gesture. Thank you so much. For the last 12 days of school before Christmas break, the students were given one Christmas activity each day. We even got to play a school wide game of BINGO. VES’s first ever Rock, Paper, Scissors challenge was held on December 20. Students, staff, board members, kitchen staff, bus drivers and parents were all involved. The winner – who will be announced in January - walked away with an amazing handmade trophy. There were lots of exciting classroom

activities in the last week of school. Grade 1 students decorated gingerbread men as they had been reading many different versions of The Gingerbread Man. Grade 2 kids completed their Christmas Around the World unit this month. They visited many countries through stories, video clips, sampling cultural Christmas foods and participating in fun crafts along the way. Opening Christmas Crackers and decorating gingerbread cookies were highlights. They also did a Christmas class book exchange on the last day. 3A was busy making dough cookie decorations that they decorated to eat. 3B made lightbulb Christmas tree ornaments and an elf paper folding craft where they wrote their wish list for their parents. They practiced making bar graphs on a website called Create-aGraph, worked on their student yearbooks, and finished up their SOS printing program offered by Public Health that teaches them about printing letters correctly to make them neat and legible. The Grade 4 classes were practicing their addition, subtraction and problem solving skills with a Christmas theme. 5C worked on a variety of Christmas STEM projects dealing with different countries. They enjoyed making mini surfboards for Santa best of all (Australia). Grade 6 students had a fun-filled last week of school by having shared gym classes, making sugar cube castles, playing capture the flag, engaging in an escape room activity, learning about Christmas around the world and trading Secret Santa gifts. VES Teddy Bear Toss Cheers roared through the gymnasium at Vermilion Elementary School (VES) on December 17, during their annual Teddy Bear Toss accompanying the All Star Floor Hockey Game. The teddy bears will be donated to Santa Anonymous. An exciting game of floor hockey took place with some of the students having the opportunity to take on their teachers, and the battle ending in a shootout. Principal, Calvin Anhorn, experienced his first time participating in the event and said, “It was amazing! There were lots of children with lots of excitement, and lots of action; it exceeded my expectations.” Photos Angela Mouly
