The Vermilion Knights of Columbus donated $1,000 during their annual shopping spree at McDonald’s Family Foods on December 14. Cathy Bartley won the $1,000 draw for on December 8, and donated the full amount to FurBabies Furever Homes in Lloydminster. “I’ve been an animal lover since I can remember; I drove my parents nuts. I am

a big believer in adopt, don’t shop. I hate puppy and cat mills. These guys are heroes in my eyes! All rescues are. It’s amazing that the Knights of Columbus do this every year. According to Larry Bingham, it was the first time they have had an organization do the shopping and he said, “It’s fun. Animals need to eat too! We’re very happy to be able to donate, and thanks to the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce for helping to sell tickets, and to everyone else for donating

additional funds.” At their $1,000 limit and still needing to ring in cat food, McDonald’s Family Foods donated an additional $250. Cathy Bartley Donated $100, and Jack Seewalt donated $50 for a grand total of $1,400 raised for the animal shelters. “This shows how expensive having an animal is. Wow that is incredible; isn’t Vermilion wonderful!” said Cathy Bartley after having heard the news about the extra donations.

Esther Wasylishen On Dec. 7, 2018, Angels came to take my Mother, Esther Wasylishen, home at age 94. Esther was pre-deceased by her husband Paul in 1977, daughter Barbara in 2010 and son Lorne in 2018. Left to mourn are her son Tyler, Grandsons Quin & Jon, Granddaughter Kathryn, brothers Rudy and Marshall and many nephews and nieces. Over the past 8 years, she enjoyed her stay at the Vermilion Valley Lodge and her friends and acquaintances there. Mom could never resist a passing garage or auction sale and loved a getting a great deal at the department store. She lived a long, happy and healthy life and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Esther’s strong faith and trust in God carried her through her long life and gave her strength and hope. A private funeral will be held for Mom and Lorne in the near future. Family and close friends will be notified.

Dance Impressions – ADAPT

Dance Impressions by Ryan hosted Mr. Brian Foley and Mrs. Sandy Slemp, who led ADAPT syllabus workshops and examinations from December 14 - 16. Celebrating Dance Impressions’ 15th year of supporting the ADAPT (Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers), its founder, Mr. Brian Foley, felt it was important to attend. Teacher, Miss Ryan Wilson, was very thankful for his leadership and said, “It is incredible to have Mr. Foley here. It is a treat to have him come to our studio in Vermilion, and that he is so supportive of us.” Mr. Foley sees 6,000 - 8,000 children from coast to coast at over 150 studios each year as well as in the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Jakarta. He was expecting to see quality work from the students in Vermilion, because he always has in the past.

“Dance is a universal language. It is really great to know that Miss Ryan is offering quality dance and quality life lessons; these children have always done very well in their exams. In this day and age, many children feel empowered without hard work, discipline, and life lessons having been learned and earned. Here, you earn the right to take your exam, and the children know the importance of goal setting and why they are participating; so there is no equal opportunity if they do not work for it. In all of the extracurricular activities, one thing about dance is that you may forget the mark you got, but you will never forget the process to achieve that mark. Dancers are trained to achieve their own personal potential and beyond. Without a doubt, Miss Ryan has maintained a very good quality of dance family and technique, and that’s why we enjoy coming to Vermilion,” said Mr. Foley.

Vermilion Minor Hockey - AJHL Game

The Sherwood Park Crusaders hosted the Bonnyville Pontiacs in Vermilion on December 15, winning 7 - 3. Associate Coach for the Crusaders, Jeff Woywitka, grew up in Vermilion and to save the visiting team an hour’s drive, opted to hold the game as a fundraiser for Vermilion Minor Hockey. The crowd was loving the fast pace of the game, and cheered wildly throughout. They also had the joy of seeing three lucky youth participate in a tricycle race during intermission. Scoring for Sherwood Park were Nick Boman, Jack Hamly, Brayden Hyland, Garrett Clegg, Cameron Aucoin, and two for Arjun Atwal. With his two goals and an assist, Arjun Atwal was named the Viterra Home Star

of the game, and the Away Star was Joel Ray from the Bonnyville Pontiacs. So far, the Sherwood Park Crusaders have acquired 26 wins, six losses, and two overtime losses. These stats keep them in 1st place in the standings for the north division of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The Crusaders are currently on a 7-game winning streak. “We are very thankful to the Bonnyville Pontiacs and the Sherwood Park Crusaders for coming, and to the community for their support. We would also like to thank local businesses and members of Vermilion Minor Hockey for contributing to the silent auction and raffle items as well as for volunteering. It goes without saying that we would like to thank Jeff Woywitka for giving us the privilege of hosting,” said Lisa Rochford, Vermilion Brayden Hyland who scored for Sherwood Park on December 15. 2019 Upcoming Farm Curl

Submitted Farm Curl hosted by the Vermilion Agricultural Society is coming up quickly, Thursday, January 17 - Saturday, January 19. There are currently 23 teams registered and there are no team requirements or curling experience needed to enter. Each team is guaranteed three games over the three days. Turkish delight is a gel like candy, sometimes covered in chocolate and sometimes covered in powdered sugar. Traditional recipes for Turkish delight can use up to 5 cups of sugar. That’s a lot of sugar, and we all know that sugar is best avoided or used in small amounts for special occasions. This recipe eliminates all the sugar, and instead subs in cherry juice, which is a known anti - inflammatory, and even though it has natural fruit sugar, is also has lots of benefi-

Gelatin also contains the amino acid lysine, which aids in healthy bones, and helps to prevent cold sore break outs, especially during the holidays when amino acids levels can become u n b a l a n c e d d u e to t h e i n c r e a s e d consumption of nuts. So if you are prone to cold sores, slow down your nut intake and increase your Turkish Delight intake. This a fun chocolate to make, and it really tastes great. Turkish Delight 4 single packages of Knox gelatin 1/2 cup warm water 1 cup cherry juice 1/2 teaspoon rose water

1/2 cup chocolate chips 1 tablespoon coconut oil In a small heavy bottomed pot, add the warm water and sprinkle in the gelatin powder, stirring to dissolve. Ad d in t h e c h er r y jui c e an d h eat . Continue stirring until the entire gelatin is dissolved, add the rose water and then pour into a buttered loaf pan, and place in the refrigerator to chill and set up. In a small heavy bottomed pan or a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips and stir in the coconut oil. Cut the Turkish delight into 1 inch cubes and dip into the melted chocolate and leave on a parc hment paper lined baking pan. Put the baking pan with the chocolate covered Turkish delight squares into the refrigerator to cool. Keep for up to two days. These do not keep for extended periods of time, as they will start to weep, so it is best to consume them fresh.

To all those who put their name forward, I take my hat off to them. They have done our country a favour as that is how democracy works. The one thing I didn’t like was, after

campaigning for two months and a week before the election meetings, some suit somewhere decided that Danny Hozack would not be allowed to run. That is just not right. Are we only going to allow only the “Elite one” to represent us in the legislature? We don’t need some suit somewhere in Edmonton or where ever telling the voter of this riding who their representative be.

So if you haven’t heard of this little m e t h o d t o l i fe’s madness before, this column will be your introduction. Well…at least the 20 percent of you that haven’t that is, the other 80 percent already having lived 100 percent of your life by it. Yes…perhaps better known colloquially as the good old “80/20 Rule”…that amazing truism that seems to find its way into every aspect and effect of (my) life from software development, quality control, and male efforts at Christmas shopping (Ok maybe it’s just me). Like “Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong”, “Close only counts in hand

grenades and horseshoes”, or “Cross that bridge when you come to it”, that Pareto law of percentages seems to mathematically govern your tracks like you are a graffiti covered CN rail car on its trip west to Edmonton. Whether you can’t find your kid’s particular LEGO kit in the store, the model you are looking for is there but in the wrong color, and that bridge out down the track is Christmas Eve…well hopefully the good old Pareto will help you make those judgement calls to get you out of it, or not. It’s better to just accept the fact your best effort will be to decorate the ride with a little spray paint to take your mind off the destination…and 2 hours later you are still down that track going over the Clover Bar Rail Bridge straight into the North Saskatchewan, like it or not. Now one of the things about writing software

as I do…and shopping for Christmas gifts that I don’t do…is that attempt at lunacy in trying to achieve quality and perfection. Pareto thinks you should really know better. Anyone who has ever touched a computer or experienced a “BSOD aka Blue Screen of Death” before knows that perfection just doesn’t happen in actual reality. That last 20 percent of the road to perfection takes 80 percent of the effort and if you’ve ever been in an office populated with Gen X’ers, 90’s hipsters, and all of them slackers…you know that 20 percent of them are creating 80 percent of the bugs. You could say the remaining 20 percent of them are making 80 percent of the code properly, but that doesn’t make my point spin nearly as well so we won’t go there. Unless of course your nearest screen has a little spinning circle

on it right now, then it does. So given that “close enough” attempt at scientific knowledge and at the same time trying to shop for stocking stuffers, spend 80 percent of your time with your eyes closed grabbing 20 percent of the items you need off the shelf and that should get you a Pareto’s level worth of satisfaction on Christmas Day, if not perhaps getting the best “bang for your buck” at the cash register. Someone might get a dented can of diced tomatoes in their stocking out of the deal but at least it would be funny…for about 20 seconds. Of course after spending 100 percent of my previous evening testing out my Pareto theories, I know that 80percent of this column is only going to make 20percent of you happy. My humor never was perfect, after all.

I’m so excited to be updating you throughout the year! The Vermilion 4H Sheep Club had their first meeting of the year on Friday, October 13. We saw a few new faces, who we would like to welcome. The first meeting of the year was the elections meeting. In the early histor y of Vermilion, schools popped up around the area so that the children of the district could be educated. One such school was the Bowtell School, which dates to 1905. The school was originally named for Harr y Bowtell. Bow tell was an early settler of the Vermilion area who had a stopping house that also ser ved as a post office and store. Located about five miles east of Vermilion, it was a large log house that had a sleeping room and dining room for travelers. Those who stopped at the house would bring

their own blankets and make their beds on the floor. Since the school was named for h i m, H ar r y B ow te l l wa s h a p py to donate the land for the school. When the first railway was built through the area in 1905, the need for a school became more and more apparent. New settlers were arriving every week and they were bringing with them their children. These children needed education. The school was built with lumber hauled by William Robertson. Robertson used a team of horses to haul the lumber for Vermilion. Built soon after the railway arrived, there were 17 children at the school initially and Dougal Gilchrist was the first teacher. The school was located near the

railway and it was there that Cassie Rober tson saw her first steam engine. She relates, “The windows of the school were high, so we had to stand up to see out at what was going on…the teacher told us to sit down and tend to our lessons, but I thought I would take another peak, but the teacher caught me. Apparently, a boy across the aisle from me had peeked too and both of us had to stand in the corner for 15 minutes. This was really embarrassing, especially standing in the corner with a boy.” In the school, students were provided with a slate, pencil, pen and copy book. The school was a ver y happy place, and many games were played. Softball was even played using a ball

made from rags and string and a bat made from a board. Sometimes, if a board was not available, a branch from a poplar tree would be used. When the strawberries were ripe, the students would come out and pick the berries and put them in their lunch pails. Vermilion & Area Handivan Community Meeting

All board positions were filled during the Vermilion & Area Handivan Society’s Community Information Meeting held on December 12. The new board members are looking forward to learning their new roles through a transition period, and everyone was pleased that with higher insurance met, the Handivan will be on the

road again. Vo l u n t e e r d r i v e r s a r e t h e o n l y remaining need for the society, and people with a class 1, 2, or 4 license interested in volunteering can contact Shirley McRobert at 780-581-2414. The Handivan currently ser vices outings at the Vermilion Valley Lodge, Continuing Care, and one senior ’s function. It can transport 17 people and three wheelchairs, and with the interest

of residents has often made two trips to the same event. Currently the cost to use the Handivan is $10 in town, or $10 per person plus $1.50 per kilometre. “In all the years the price has only gone up once, and some years if we were to have had a flat tire we would have been in trouble. We know within the next five years that the Handivan will have to be replaced. The last one cost us $100,000, and insurance costs

have gone up significantly. It costs us roughly $10,000 per year to run the Handivan. The need for drivers is ongoing all the time. Without our drivers, we have a van we can’t use. The new board members’ stepping up was wonderful. I would like to thank everyone for coming out and the volunteers for filling all positions,” said past president, Shirley McRobert.

Christmas Bird Count

The Vermilion River Naturalists Society held their Annual Christmas Bird Count on December 15. First and second year Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation students joined Chris Olsen’s team along with Alumni Caleb Corcoran and Alyssa Metro. The group had many stops in the area and were keen to take part. “Birds are an important part of our ecosystem, and I think it’s important that we learn about them,” said Shaye Hill. The Vermilion River Naturalists Society had one unusual sighting of a Great Blue Heron, and overall saw 1,429 individual Lakeland College Alumni, Alyssa Metro at birds ranging 24 species. “The incredible diversity we have is the 2018 Christmas Bird Count in Vermilion. most interesting,” added Jonathan Cooke.

Submitted It is the season of Christmas and celebration. It is the season of reflection and moving our thoughts from the past year and into the coming of a new year. Looking over the past year I have listened to and understand the hardships of many Alberta families who this Christmas find themselves concerned with the economic situation of our province. The loss of jobs in the energy industry over the past few years has left

many families hurting. I would encourage neighbours and friends across our constituency to reach out to help each other once again. Take the time to be a blessing of love to others this Christmas season. I would also like to thank our men and women in uniform who are serving at home and around the world. Christmas can be a hard time for military families and we continue to keep you all in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you also

to the medical and emergency workers who staff our hospitals, RCMP, Ambulance and Fire for your service not only over the holiday season but also all year long. In reflection as MLA for VermilionLloydminster on my hope for our province I think of Jeremiah 29:11. It is my prayer not only for this constituency but for our amazing province and the many incredible people who live here. May the promise of Jeremiah 29:11 not only

St. Jerome’s Christmas Concert

The Lakeland College Alumni Theatre was packed full of excitement as family and friends gathered to see the St. Jerome’s School ‘Tinsel Mania’ Christmas Concert on December 13. Approximately 120 children, Kindergarten – Grade 5, kept the crowd engaged with their lively performances. It was clear that a lot of practice had gone into the concert, as well delivered messages spread Christmas cheer throughout the theatre. The Kindergarten students performed two

songs, ‘Glory’ and ‘Noel’. Grades 1 - 5 took the audience on a journey to “Tuneville,” where the townspeople were known as Tunies and their leader, Queen Dazzlebaum, declared that everyday was Christmas! “Our production of ‘Wrapping All the Way’ was filled with a lot of Christmasisms and the air was merry and bright,” said teacher, Peggie Roth. The children had a lot of fun dressing up in costumes, singing and dancing throughout the evening. Principal, Allan Chase, thanked guests for coming and

said, “That was absolutely fabulous. It’s nights like this that give me perspective on how great of a job I have. Merry Christmas everybody!”

The Vermilion Voice Newspaper office was filled with Ho Ho Ho’s as Santa made scheduled appearances to his workshop on December 10, 12, 15 and 17th. To date, the man all dressed in red had been visited by approximately 20 children who gleefully looked around the workshop and had pictures taken with the “jolly old elf.” Visitation and picture opportunites was on a donation basis, however, wasn’t required. “I decided to do this workshop to raise funds for the Long Term Care residents, as well as to give children the opportunity to visit with Santa in a less commercial setting. Not everyone can afford to bring their little ones to

see Santa and I am hoping to fill that gap. Santa shouldn’t be a business,” said Santa. While some children were shy at first, Santa and his elves calmly and gently curbed their shyness with their caring and peppy demeanour. “One little one was pret t y shy of Santa at first, but we were able to bring her out of her shell when I asked her if she wanted to hear a secret about her mommy,” said Santa, who went on to say “The cookies donated by McDonald’s Family Foods really helped as well, they were pretty delicious.” Some visitors, who had visited the workshop, quickly posted the picture of their children with Santa on the ‘A Vermilion Santa’ Facebook page and left comments expressing their satis-

faction with their experience. “If you’re looking to have a nice visit and chat with Santa head on down to the Voice,” said Megan Hartwell. “Thank you, Santa! Tanisha was so proud to help,” said Crystal Swan. “ Thanks so much, Santa!!! ” said Amber Camille Hobbs. Children were not the only ones to enjoy the workshop, Santa’s elves expressed their joy in bringing smiles to the children’s faces. “Had such a fun night with the kids!! It is so rewarding to see the look in their faces,” said Lisa Sherwood who portrayed one of Santa’s elves. Santa will be visiting his workshop at the Vermilion Voice on December 19th from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and again on December 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Well

behaved furbabies are also welcome to get their photo taken with Santa. “Thank you to ever yone who has shared my post and have posted to the ‘A Vermilion Santa’ Facebook page to help bring awareness,” said Santa. Santa’s workshop was made from items donated by community residents and items purchased by Santa himself. “I am very grateful for the help I have received from community members, my Elves and to everyone who came to help build the workshop; it was a team effort that made this all come together. If it wasn’t for Sue the owner of the Vermilion Voice newspaper it definitely would not have happened and I am so very appreciative that she allowed me to use the space in the back of her building,” said Santa.

Happy Harmonizers Host Christmas Concert

The Vermilion Happy Harmonizers hosted a Christmas Concert on December 4, at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre. Guest performers included A Touch Of Brass handbell choir, and two quartets; the Local Vocals, and TNT. Gordon Hills emceed the event, and admission was donations to the Food Bank. “This was our ninth year of doing a concert like this. We just love getting together and singing; it’s a therapy of some kind,” said Irene Smith. Overall, guests enjoyed listening to each of the musical performances, and visiting over refreshments. The grade 7 math classes were recruited by the J. R. Robson Elves to help decorate the classroom doors around the building to spread holiday cheer. They were given some specific requirements: “the whole door must be covered”, “there must be lights, and 2/5 of them must be yellow/white” as well as a few other fractions. They were put into groups of three and given time to plan, then execute their designs. The doors will all be judged by the Head Elves and the top three doors will be given a prize. Foods 9 class, who are doing a foods related project to sell their wares, will be at the Vermilion Farmers Market on Tuesday, December 18. You are more than welcome to join us from 10 - 2 that day. There will be extended hours for this holiday season.

Wow, what a performance from the St. Jerome’s Elementary students on Thursday evening. The actors were spot on, the choir sang out loud and clear, and the dancing was sensational. The evening began with the thirty kindergarten students singing two Christmas songs. During the last song they all showed their best dance moves. The cute factor was overwhelming. Then the grade one to five children shared the musical play, “Wrapping All the Way”, with the message that underneath all the glitter and tinsel mania of Christmas we truly are celebrating the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Each class performance was perfect, entertaining and meaningful. Thank you to all the students for their hard work and dedication to the Christmas Concert. Thank you to the teachers and education assistants for your commitment to presenting the most amazing concert with the message of Jesus’ birth at the center. Grade 1 students had a wonder ful time spreading holiday cheer with the residents of the Vermilion Lodge. They sang Christmas carols and then read their Santa letters. VES loves making these connections with the seniors in our community. The Roots of Empathy program at VES continues to be a weekly highlight for the Grade 2 classes. 2A has had three visits from baby Tenley and mom Dallis. They are enjoying observing baby Tenley as she plays with toys, reacts to their singing, and reaches new milestones. The students have learned about her temperament and how it determines how she will react to things. They have been watching her facial expressions, body language, and sounds to learn about how she lets the people around her know what she needs. Through this experiential learning, the students are developing their social/emotional competence as well as increasing empathy. 2B was very excited to welcome Baby Bea and mom Mrs. Throndson to their classroom for the first time this past week. They are looking forward to also observing Bea as she

It was a beautiful morning to walk to Holy Name Catholic Church for our monthly school mass on Thursday, December 13. The High School Student Council were the choir, and participated in readings and gifts. Father Roger spoke of how John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus, and we too must prepare our hearts this Advent Season for the Christ child. The two class have been studying buoyancy in science. Last week they built balloon powered boats. Then they got to test them out. In the spirit of “goodwill to all”, our grade seven Spartans embrace the lovely winter morning and enjoyed a walk to the lodge to read Christmas themed books with the residents! Mrs. Clark’s CALM 20 classes would like to thank the following community members for sharing their time and expertise with us last week: Self Centered Yoga and Wellness, Clarisa Westman from Stewart Realty discussing renting versus buying, as well as mortgage basics and Jennifer Wiles from Prairie Central FASD Association.

Mr. Sader’s CTS 10 class has learned to create logos to be pressed onto clothing. We are now able to create shirts and other items for Spartan sports events. “The Five Days of Christmas” are taking place this week. Monday was BYOM - Bring your own Mug to enjoy a delicious treat of Hot Chocolate, Tuesday is Christmas Hat Day, Wednesday - Pyjama Day, Thursday - Red/Green Ugly Sweater Day, Friday Spartan Olympics.

Mannville Among Top 25 Communities Vying For $25K Donation

M A N N V I L L E (D e c . 14 , 2 018) – Mannville will be one of the communities included on Co-op’s 2019 Fuel Up to Win Game Card after voting made it one of the top 25 communities in Western Canada. As part of the #Fuelupmytown contest November 1 and 21, anyone could share hashtags on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to vote for their preferred town or city. The top 25 communities

mentioned have been added to the Fuel Up to Win game card, while the community with the most mentions will receive a $25,000 donation from Co-op to a local charity! The grand prize winner will be announced before the start of the Fuel Up to Win promotion in February 2019. “Thank you to everyone for your participation in this opportunity to support a local cause in Mannville,” said Cheryl Jory, Manager of Cornerstone Co-op Mannville Food Store. “The amount of pride we have in

our Mannville community comes as no surprise and now all of Western Canada will be able to find us on this year’s Fuel Up to Win game card. What a great way to celebrate our Centennial!” The contest was inspired by eightyear-old Devin Dreger from Oak Bank, MB who realized that his hometown was not on the Fuel Up to Win game card last year. When he told his parents and an employee at his local Co-op, they suggested that he do something about it. “To the Company of Co-op,” Devin

wrote in a handwritten letter, “I saw there was no Oak Bank, Manitoba, for Fuel Up to Win. I was thinking you could put it in next year.” Thanks to Devin – and voting – Oak Bank has made the top 25 - along with Mannville - and will also be on the game card this year. Vermilion Continuing Care Christmas Party

Family and friends gathered at Vermilion Continuing Care as they held a Christmas Party on December 12. Residents enjoyed singing Christmas songs, as well as a visit from Santa, a special gift, and Christmas snacks. Volunteers played guitar and sang in each house, echoing music softly throughout for all to sing along and enjoy. The Critters Are Coming!

The CFCW Critters will be coming to Vermilion on January 10, and will play the Buffalo Coulee Sabres at 7 p.m. The Critters are a volunteer hockey team who raise funds all across the province for all types of causes. On December 13, the Critters played in Leduc raising $6,500 for a Thorsby nonprofit organization. So far this season, they have raised $24,500, and overall they have raised $1,172,925. In Vermilion, they will be fundraising for a new ice plant, which will benefit a multitude of organizations and area athletes. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and 12 and under will be free. Tickets are available at Webb’s, Vermilion Credit Union, or the Vermilion Town Office.

“Get your tickets now before we sell out; they would make great stocking stuffers. The event is good for children, seniors, corporate team-building, everything; we want everybody there! There will be a bunch of door prizes, silent auction items, and 50/50 draws,” said organizer, Russ Cameron. He noted that helping to support the fundraiser, there will be representation from the Vermilion Skating Club, The Vermilion Curling Club, Pond Hockey, Vermilion Minor Hockey, and players, coaches, team staff, and parents from the area. “The current ice plant is 60 years old. The Critters’ people are superstars! They are comical, and their games are held strictly to raise funds for communities,” said Cameron.
