Costumes covered the rink from October 27 - 28, as the Vermilion Curling Club hosted Curloween, as their first event of the season. “It’s a great way to get the season started, and it was great to have everyone come out and support the event,” said organizer Brooke Grieve. Forty participants enjoyed the friendly competition as well as additional prizes and cash draws. “There were lots of people here to help out, so it was a great time for inexperienced curlers to learn, and it is always fun to see the costumes! We would also like to thank the many sponsors of this event,” said Grieve. She went on to say that the curling club always loves getting new participants, and looks forward to another year of curling. Overall, participants enjoyed the festive Princess and the Frog, Cristina Polsinelli at event and socializing with one another. Curloween 2018.

Cannabis retailer, ‘YSS by Solo’ or ‘YSS’, will open their first Canadian location in Vermilion, Alberta within the next couple of weeks. In their final stages of construction, YSS is anticipating completion of the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission (AGLC) inspection and licencing process within the first week of November. CORNERSTONECOOP.CA Lloydminster and Vegreville locations will also be among the first YSS locations in Canada, opening later in November. Aldershot Resources Ltd. (doing business as Solo Growth Corp.), is a publicly traded company on the TSX-Venture Exchange under the symbol ‘ALZ’. The retail store fronts will operate under the YSS brand. Arthur Waterfield passed away in Lloydminster on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the age of 86 years. Arthur is lovingly remembered by; his wife, Eva; his children, Darryl (Andree) of Bonnyville, AB, Garry (Rhea) of Islay, AB and Heather Wyard-Scott of Mannville, AB; his grandchildren, Nikki (Ian), Damien (Jenna), Keegan, Kirsten, Kaeli and Caleb; his great grandchildren, Carter, Braxton and Zachary; his brothers, Joe and Ed. Arthur was predeceased by: his parents, Harold and Helen Waterfield and his sister, Faith. A Memorial Service for Arthur was held at the Islay Community Hall, Islay, Alberta on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Doug Baynton officiating. The interment was held at the Islay Cemetery.

Stephen Price has overcome obstacles in physical health, psychological health, and business in order to achieve the life he had always dreamed of. Price grew up in Vermilion, and attended high school in Lloydminster. He had been born with a birth defect (club foot), which would not have created as much difficulty; except that the doctor had waited until he was three days old to correct it. As a result, he underwent four major surgeries throughout his childhood. At approximately three years of age, he was given leg braces, and later was told he would never be able to run. “I was confined to a wheel chair or crutch bound until I was just shy of 12 years old,” said Price. Between surgeries, Price put on a significant amount of weight and attempted sports, but admitted that he likely provided more help for the opposition. In his work life, he was promoted at 17-years-old to be a manager (the company’s youngest ever) and moved to Edmonton, where he stayed for 10 years. During this time, Price was also diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which can be extremely painful and debilitating. At approximately 25 years old, Price was working in retail upper management, spending all day on his feet at 252 lbs. “By chance, I read a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that said, ‘If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do - you have to keep moving forward.’ I took it literally because I could walk and had always wanted to run. My first run, I went 50m and I thought I was going to have a heart attack; it was brutal. The second day, I ran 100m. The third day, I ran 10km non-stop. Then I ran 18km non-stop and I realized; clearly I can do this!” said Price. In four and a half months, Price lost 75 lbs. Within 10 months he had ran his first three marathons, in Edmonton, Iceland, and Portugal. “After running marathons, I realized that

I loved running, even though I still limp. There are days when I don’t want to run, but I just think about when I couldn’t run, and I am grateful that I can,” said Price. He worked at The Running Room instructing clinics and thought, why not turn it into a business, and that’s exactly what he did. Fifteen years ago, Price started a travel agency called Dream Travel (Canada). Though it is a full on travel agency, he found a specialized/niche market by being dedicated to taking walkers and runners to races around the world. Three years after starting his business, due to the housing crisis in the United States, and it’s affect on the Canadian dollar, he lost nearly everything in order to keep his business afloat. Without a home or a plan, on his last day in Edmonton, Price decided to wait and get the mail one last time; although he certainly did not expect what was coming. A cheque arrived from his uncle on behalf of his late Grandmother. Instantly, he realized that the $2,000 would allow him six months including food in Costa Rica. He planned to stay with a friend from Vermilion who was housesitting there at the time. “One or two days after moving to Costa Rica, I was stressed out,” admitted Price. Price went on to explain that living in Costa Rica he was much healthier. From there he was also able to turn his business around. He’s also now thrilled to be medication free (Crohn’s disease) for the past three years. “After those six months, I thought I could return to Canada, but I was living on a beach in paradise. Running in Canada in the winter on snow and ice is horrible. I thought, ‘If I can operate my business remotely, and train year round, why not continue to live in paradise,’” said Price. Realizing that it was cheaper to stay in places than to fly back and forth, Price has been living out of a carry-on bag for the past 10 years, choosing to continue travelling and remain homeless. For the past 15 years, Price has been running races all over the world including Asia, Africa, Central and South America,

Europe; everywhere but Australia and Antarctica. Price said that if he was to call anywhere home it would be Costa Rica, but he continues to enjoy visiting family in Vermilion. “I always felt like I could come back, but I wanted to follow my dreams,” said Price.

Quarter Cuts Ltd. opened for business on September 24, outside Vermilion and offers cutting and processing of inspected pork, uninspected custom pork and wild game. “We are looking to source all local animals, and hope to be in our new fac ilit y before the new year,” said Owner, Dallas Hoffman. Currently operating in the old Farmer’s Own location (temporary location: HWY 619 and RR 73 - one mile south), Quarter Cuts Ltd. is eager for the new location because it will allow them to offer a mobile service, and in a few years will have a government certified abattoir on site. Pumpkin Cake With Cream Cheese Icing

October is the month of the pumpkin. Here is my variation on the popular carrot cake. I invente d while in Calgary, so it will work for high altitude baking. Like carrots, the orange pigment in pumpkin is high in both the alpha and beta form of vitamin A, which is known for its benefits for the eyes. Studies have shown these forms of vitamin A have anti-aging properties and may reduce the risk of certain cancers. Only 1/2 cup of pumpkin supplies 100% of your daily vitamin A requirement. Pumpkin is a good source of fiber, iron, vitamin C, vitamin E & potassium. Pumpkin is low in calories. Oats contain a special fiber called beta-glucan, which has been proven to have the beneficial effect of removing cholesterol from the digestive

track, before it can enter the blood stream. Researchers have found a compound in the oats called avenanthramide which helps to protect the good LDL cholesterol from oxidation. This protective effect lasts longer if you have a food that contains vitamin C along with your oat containing cake. There is vitamin C in the pumpkin but a large percentage of it is lost by cooking. The oats, whole grain flour, and cinnamon help to stabilize blood sugar, which may be beneficial for people with diabetes, insulin resistant metabolic syndrome and obesity. The pumpkin, oat bran and flour are all excellent fiber sources. I like using whole grain barley because barley is a grain that has a low glycemic index, making it a carbohydrate that is beneficial for stable blood sugar and weight loss. Barley is a good source of selenium, serotonin and manganese. You can enjoy this cake guilt free and reap all the benefits from their nutritious ingredients.

This cake is so yummy, and the cream cheese icing is the perfect complement to it. Pumpkin Cake with Cream Cheese Icing 4 eggs 1/2 cup olive or canola oil 1 cup brown sugar 1 can pumpkin 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1.5 teaspoon ginger 1/2 teaspoon cloves 1 cup whole grain flour such as barley or wheat 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup quick cooking rolled oats 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda Whisk one egg in a bowl and then add in part of the oil, keep adding the eggs and oil alternately. Add the brown sugar, pumpkin, vanilla and the spices and whisk or stir to

blend. Add all the dry ingredients at once and then stir to blends. I baked it in a 7 x 13 pan at 325 degrees for 40 minutes. Cool and ice with cream cheese icing. To make the icing beat together with an electric mixer 1 250 gram package of cream cheese at room temperature, 2 tablespoons of melted butter and 1 and a half cups of powdered icing sugar. The

Town of Vermilion Notice of increase to Franchise Fee on Natural Gas Billings The Town of Vermilion is proposing to increase the natural gas distribution franchise fee which it charges ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd., for the exclusive right to deliver natural gas to the residents of the Town of Vermilion and for use of municipal lands for its natural gas lines. The franchise fee applies to all customers that receive gas services in the Town of Vermilion; and is required to be billed as a separate charge on gas billings. The current franchise fee is set at 15% for ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd. delivery revenues and will increase to 17 % effective January 1, 2019. For an average residential customer using 120 GJ’s per year, this will result in an annual increase of about $9.92 from the average paid in 2018. Curtis Anderson Spreads Brain Injury Awareness In Poland

Continuing his mission to spread brain injury awareness, Curtis Anderson spoke at a Neurology Conference in Warsaw, Poland, on October 19. While at the conference, he had the opportunity to share his story of recovery from a bull riding accident at the Ponoka Stampede on June 26, 2002, and the brain injury he suffered as a result. Anderson’s story touched a number of people that he met along the way. “When I was in Poland, I connected with doctors from New York and California, a lady speaking at the same time

as me from Brazil, and an inventor from Poland. My presentation went well, and I received good feedback. The doctors were impressed with my recovery,” said Anderson. He went on to enjoy his time in Poland, sightseeing and learning about the history. He enjoyed that a lot of the streets were handmade with cobblestone. “The architecture is pretty amazing and some portions were rebuilt after the war,” said Anderson. Legion Hosts Neil Diamond Tribute

Approximately 100 people attended as the Vermilion Legion hosted Jason Scott performing Diamond Forever; a celebration of Neil Diamond on October 27. Scott had the audience clapping along as they listened to many of their favourite classics. The performance was Scott’s third time in Vermilion, and Legion President, Garry Zayac said, “It was awesome! He brings a fun show every time.” According to http://www.diamond-

He toured extensively with club and concert bands in his 20’s, and in his 30’s he was a record -label signed recording artist, writer and performer. Scott entertained the crowd, as he delivered actions and personal interactions during his performances. He also educated the audience on the history of the songs. The Vermilion Public Library will be hosting a series of TED talks throughout November, each Thursday from 6 – 7 p.m. “This series of short videos offers another educational and opportunity at the Library, as well as the opportunity to share and discuss ideas,” said Programs Coordinator, Sheila Heit. According to Heit, part of the TED mission statement is, ‘Free knowledge from the world’s most inspired thinkers.’ Heit is challenging people in Vermilion to get inspired, spark conversation, and learn something new. Topics are geared towards young professionals or anyone interested, and par ticipants will also have the opportunity to enjoy free popcorn.

‘Why are these 32 symbols found in ancient caves all over Europe?’ ‘Dragonflies that fly across the ocean,’ and ‘Curating humanit y ’s heritage’ are just a few of the topics that will be discussed. By the end of the weekend, you won’t be able to wipe the smile off the kids’ faces because of what they have all learned,” said Woodward who was a stock contractor for 34 years. Participants had the opportunity to learn from the best with instructors being CFR qualifier and Canadian Champion, Dusty Hausauer; four-time Canadian Champion and t wo -time

NFR qualifier-Dusty Lavalley; as well as three-time NFR qualifier and CFR qualifier Clay Elliott. Participants from as far as Australia took in the school, and 18-year-old Mitch Nameth from Cupar, Saskatchewan who has been bareback riding for the past five months said, “I like the adrenaline rush and it is a good challenge; a one of a kind feeling really.” Past rodeo queen and assistant h or s e tr ain er, S ar ah M i c h e l, fr o m Airdrie grew up with bronc riders her whole life, and decided to participate as a bareback rider. “I’ve always been fascinated with roug h sto c k an d t he p ower of t he horse; as well as the teamwork that goes into making a successful ride, and I wanted to give it a try for myself. I knew if I wanted to get into it, that I wanted to do it right, and in a safe environment, learning from qualified people in order to have a chance to ask all of the questions that I had. I am

New - Momentum Dance Festival

A program funded through SHAPE Studio, Momentum Dance Events, will be hosting their first ever Momentum Dance Festival at the Alumni Theatre in Vermilion from March 9 - 10. “The idea of hosting a festival came from a need in the community. There are a lot of remote dance schools in the area that we’re providing an opportunity to showcase their smaller dance teams without having to travel to the bigger centres. In Vermilion, we’ve been blessed with a beautiful theatre and facility to host an event of that nature. As the owner of SHAPE Studio, I believe in providing youth with as many opportunities for artistic growth as possible. This year for instance, I’m hosting a student-choreography show at the Alumni Theatre on January 15, and with the addition of this

festival, it brings two new opportunities to the Vermilion area for students to shine,” said co-director, Leigha Wald-Nordling. “We’ve had a really good response from everyone so far,” added co-director Shanna Howlett. Momentum Dance Festival will host an adjudicator from Regina who has been a studio owner for the past 15 years, and a certified dance teacher for over 20 years. “We are really excited and looking forward to bringing something new and fun to the Vermilion area. Keeping things local is very important to Leigha and I, so we will utilize as many small businesses in the area as possible (for anything from ticket printing to merchandise and promotions),” said Howlett. She went on to say that Momentum Dance Festival will have a more specified breakdown of hours of training per dancer. Thus, categories will allow dancers to be in equal competition, and the

festival will offer cash prizes and a dance off! The new festival will offer video adjudication for all dancers and teachers, as well as a professional photographer photos and video for purchase.

Intelligent Street Light Project In Lloydminster Wins International Award

Submitted Lloydminster, Alberta – ATCO, Alberta’s leading energy and infrastructure provider, has received an international award for their Intelligent Street Light Project in Lloydminster. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) recognized ATCO with the IES 2018 Illumination Award of Excellence for Energy & Environmental Lighting Design. This award recognizes quality lighting installations that incorporate advanced energysaving strategies and environmentally responsible solutions into the design. The project uses wireless motion-based sensors and a control system for Light Emitting Diode (LED) street lights to deliver light-on-demand. With the motion sensing

technology in place, street lights dim during off-peak hours, and automatically brighten when the presence of vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians is detected. This lighting design can result in up to 80% energy reduction and further reduces light pollution. “Our City strives to adopt innovative technologies to create energy savings, lower carbon emissions and increased public safety,” said Mayor, Gerald Aalbers. “We are incredibly proud of our progress so far; and are thankful for the hard work of our City staff and ATCO for bringing Lloydminster to the cutting edge of intelligent technology along College Drive.” “The City of Lloydminster demonstrated great leadership by being one of the

first municipalities in Alberta and in North America to adopt this innovative technology. ATCO is committed to sustainable and innovative energy solutions and we were excited to partner with the City on this project to explore what is possible with intelligent street lights.” said Amro Alansari, Lead Design Engineer for ATCO. “The pilot not only resulted in energy savings, but it also improves safety and security for residents, while being better for the environment.” The award was presented in August to ATCO and the other 14 winners. There was lots of community and school volunteers that helped make the ASAA Cross Country Running Provincials a big success last weekend, which helped JR Robson High School set the bar higher for future cross country meets. 6 students from JR Robson participated in Provincials: Sydney Crowe placed 11th out of 110 participants in Sr. Girls, Sam Ree placed 24th and Bray Crowe placed 46th, out of 123 participants in Intermediate Boys, Clay Bryden placed 44th, Jayce Sweeney placed 92nd and Jared Gourley as a late addition placed 107th out of 129 participants in Jr. Boys. They as a team placed 5th in the Province out of 40 schools in the 2A category with 503.39 points! The football season is now over. The team had a good rebuilding season, with many new players from grades 9 and 10 and a couple of grade 11’s. The players learned and improved as the season went on. They are already looking forward to next football season. Mr. Atkinson filled in Mr. Woodward’s coaching position last weekend as the Jr. Boys A&B volleyball teams played. A-team played 4 teams back to back and came in second place! Halloween activities are planned for Wednesday and there will be multiple awards for costumes in different categories. It’s always amazing to see the inventiveness of students in creating memorable costumes. Our Fall Supper is taking place next Thursday, November 1. There are two settings: 5:30 and 6:30. If you are interested in getting a ticket and haven’t been approached by a JR student, please

contact the school. Also taking place next week is Awards night on Friday, November 2 at 7:00 pm. Mrs. Wilhelm is hard at work planning and organizing this night, which is a huge undertaking and she deserves praise for all she does for this night. Mrs. Schroeder

We are all ready and excited to celebrate Halloween on Wednesday. Students have been creating artwork and writing stories about Haunted Houses and Monsters. The Sr. High Student Council have decorated and prepared a Haunted House in the Father Cordeau Centre for us all to visit. Mrs. Roth’s students have been practicing to make perfect “The Monster Mash” for October Happigrams, which will be held on Wednesday, October 31 at 9:30 a.m. in the gym. Elementary students will get dressed after the lunch recess at 12:30 p.m. and the Costume Parade will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the gym. Students will be participating in a variety of activities throughout the day in their homerooms. Sr. High and Middle Level students are encouraged to dress up for the day. Middle Level Student Council have organized a Costume Contest and mini-games for the students to participate in during the afternoon. They will visit the Haunted House and share tasty Halloween snacks! Fat Cat and the Credit Union visited St. Jerome’s School on Thursday, October 25 to present a cheque to the elementary students. All the elementary students and staff gathered in the Gathering Area to greet Fat Cat and accept the generous donation.

The money will buy books to support our amazing reading program. Thank you to Fat Cat for giving high-fives to all the students and the Vermilion Credit Union for putting students and reading first! St. Jerome’s has been given an amazing opportunity to team up with students from the Animal Health Program at Lakeland College to offer our students a Pet Therapy Reading program. Every Friday, Lakeland College students bring dogs into the school to have reluctant readers take turns reading to these kind and patience animals. Our elementary students have had a very positive experience and we are looking forward to the benefits this program will provide our students. Many of our Grade 10 Phys. Ed. students had the opportunity to participate in a new skill on Thursday, October 25 at the Colonel McCormack Recreation Centre at Lakeland College. They were able to participate in a scuba diving course. The students enjoyed learning the techniques of scuba diving. Thank you to Mr. Wasylik for organizing this opportunity and Mrs. Forsyth for driving the bus. On Thursday, October 25th, Sr. High Student Council held a 59-Minute Fundraiser form 12:30-1:29 pm. The students were selling bags of flavoured popcorn. Students contacted family and friends within that 59 minute time frame to sell the popcorn. Congratulations to the Student

Council for a job well done on this fundraiser! Grade nine students have been learning all about Chemistry in science. They had a educational and interesting class conducting several experiments to identify a “mystery” powder in Science class. Congratulations to Mr. Al Rogan, our newest board trustee. Mr. Rogan is an alumnus of St. Jerome’s, a coach to many alumni and generous supporter of many of the endeavours our school has undertaken. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Rogan share his time and talents in our school division. Mrs. McCormack and the Grade 3/4 Class would like to welcome Ms. Nicole Frankiw into their classroom. Ms. Frankiw is a University of Alberta student teacher. She will be with the class until the middle of December. The students have already learned so much from Ms. Frankiw in the first three weeks she has with them and are excited to learn so much more. Congratulations to the JV Spartans for the terrific play throughout the weekend. They battled every game and fought hard to bring home the Silver in the Consolation Final. Thanks to the coaches Tenille Chase and Brianne Wheat for sharing their talents and time with this great group of young ladies. Our Jr. Boys hosted their home tournament on October 19 and 20. The Jr.

“B” Boys played Friday Night winning the Silver Medal. Congratulations!! The Jr. “A” Boys who kept the successful play going on Saturday defending their home gym and winning Gold. Our Sr. Boys Volleyball team are hosting their home tournament this weekend, November 2 and 3. Come out and cheer on this great group of boys!! V e r m i l i o n Elementary School is proud to offer a free breakfast program to all our students each school morning. Breakfast is served by staff members from the school kitchen window every morning from 8:30-8:50. All students are invited to eat. This program helps see that students have the opportunity to focus on schoolwork rather than a growling tummy. This year we are excited to have received a grant from Alberta Nutrition. This grant will allow us to expand our menu offering new healthy and interesting choices each morning. VES would also like to thank the Royal Canadian Legion for their donation of $200 to our Breakfast Program. We would like to meet with all families for Parent Teacher Interviews to discuss how the year has started and to set goals

to ensure each student’s success. Crisis comes to most people at some time and we especially think of crisis experienced during times of family violence. November focus is on family violence and crisis. Crisis that is experienced is responded to differently by each person in their unique situation and with what coping skills they know. Crisis brings forth various emotions such as fear, anger, anxiety helplessness and the natural “fight-flight” response. Those mentioned, if experienced for an extended period of time, affects our mental health and how we cope on a daily basis. We all have physical needs; safety, food, shelter and we need love and a sense of belonging to counter the Crisis response in our lives. Whenever we experience crisis we experience losses in our life, too. Crisis changes our lives, our trust, our security, and our world assumptions are challenged. What is safe and what is normal? We grieve normalcy, loss of relationships, safety and security and an overall life change.” When children observe or experience violence they are also affected in the areas of Brain Development, Emotional wellbeing, the ability to learn and ability to connect with others.” (website Child Trauma Academy– UN study on violence against children). Rock Hockey Update

Submitted The Vermilion Rock Hockey Team played their first two games of the season on October 19 -20. On October 19, they lost 8 – 4 to Two Hills; scoring for Vermilion were Eric Fadden, Dylan Yungblut, Wayne Simpson, and Scott Roland. On October 20, they lost 10 – 2 to Meadow Lake; scoring for Vermilion were Webb and Cory Clatworthy. “Obviously starting out with two losses isn’t what a team wants, but the team is coming together. There are many return-

ing players on forward, and the defence will see a few new names. Overall I was pleased with the effort we put in for the two games and expect things to get better as the season progresses,” said coach Darcy Fadden. On October 26, the Vermilion Rock switched gears winning 11 – 4 against the Kitscoty Monarchs. Scoring for Vermilion were Aaron Betz, Eric Fadden, Kyler Anderson, Dylan Yungblut, Shayne Boomhower, Dan Webb, Brayden Malica, and two goals each for Reid Roland and Dallon Byrt.

ACAC Cross Country Running Championships

Lakeland College hosted the ACAC Cross Countr y Running Championships at the Vermilion Provincial Park on October 27. Both men’s and ladies college teams from across the province competed in the cold wind. “It’s great to host at home, giving our athletes a home-course advantage,” said Al Rogan, Lakeland College Athletic Director.
