Layne Matechuk - Thankful To Be Home

Family and supporters all across the country celebrated as Humboldt Broncos player, Layne Matechuk, was released from Saskatoon City Hospital on October 5. After suffering severe head injuries, brain damage and spending one month in a medically induced coma following the April 6, bus collision, Layne’s recover y process has been outstanding. Layne was able walk out of the hospital after being in care one day short of six months. Layne’s grandfather, George Matechuk (from Vermilion) spent most of the summer there visiting and said,
“He was in very good shape which has helped him recuperate. One thing is that his parents are happy now. The whole family is really happy that he is home, and that he is progressing. Layne seems to be a lot happier now that he is home.” Layne and his family were originally from Colonsay, Saskatchewan and have been staying in Saskatoon this year so that Layne can continue therapy as an outpatient two times per day. According to George, Layne’s mobility is good, but he is still struggling with speech, that will continue slowly coming back. “He’s improving all the time!” said George. George noted that Layne likes play-
ing with his dog, Bailey, and can text his sister back and forth all the time. “They were just like two peas in a pod; they were always close. There isn’t a day that goes by that she doesn’t talk to him on the phone. One day she said, ‘Layne, I love you.’ After receiving no response she said, ‘I love you very much,’ and he said, ‘No, I love you more!’” This summer, he was able to get a weekend pass to go with his family to the cabin. “He used to go there a lot and spend a lot of time. He was a great wake boarder and surfer (his summer passions). When he saw the cabin he smiled! Being at the

Since he has been home, Layne has kept the smile on his face and continues to be really happy!” concluded George.

Tim & The Glory Boys

The audience was full of cheer and giving as the Parkview Alliance Church hosted Tim & The Glory Boys in Vermilion on October 10. During their third visit to Vermilion, the band performed the Buffalo Roadshow. Playing old and new country songs, they incorporated some of their earlier bluegrass and gospel music. Many were awed to see videos of the bands recent work with World Vision in Uganda. With members of the band coming from Abbotsford, British Columbia and Manitoba, it only seemed natural for them to host a hockey game while they were serving abroad. The band then met with people at ‘ground zero’ of the refugee crisis at a camp of approximately 300,000 people fleeing southern Sudan. At another camp they witnessed

Parkview Alliance Administrator, Lori Carlson said, “It’s excellent to have this group here; they are so down to earth, and we really enjoy them.”

Allied Arts - New North Collective
Vermilion Allied Arts hosted New North Collective at Lakeland College’s Alumni Theatre on October 13. “It’s wonderful to showcase the amazing talent that Canada has and share a perspective from the north,” said Caroline MacMillan. New North Collective is a group of individual artists who joined together playing original material about what the north means to them and sharing their personal stories. The audience was captivated by wild instrumentals and earthy beats during their last stop on the tour. “It’s been a while since we drove across the prairies; I forgot how big the sky is,” said singer/songwriter, Diyet who grew up surrounded by mountains in Burwash Landing, Yukon.

September, as a rule, is a gorgeous warm, pleasant month with the geese flying overhead as we do fall clean up and the hum of combines everywhere. Well, this year is an exemption the first day of fall was snow, and on Thanksgiving Monday we go from 6 inches to seven inches of the wet white snow. Activities go on at the Senior Centre, and on October 11 there were 15 tables in play for the double crib. Present were play-
ers from Lloydminster, St. Paul, Mannville, Wainwright, and Vermilion enjoying coffee, lunch 12 games of crib and a lovely dinner. Winners of 1st were Margaret and Sandra, 2nd Theresa and Jossie, 3rd Elsie and Jean. Winners of 25/25 were Donna and Alice. Crib doubles are held once a month. October 16 at 10 a.m. is a Seniors Info Session. October 17 is a Pot Luck supper at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $5, bring a pot-luck dish or dessert. October 18 - Bingo at 1 p.m. Bingo is held every first and third Thursday of the month.
October 18 jackpot is $488 and 61 numbers called. Lots of folks are playing and everyone welcome. Floor curling is Monday, Wednesday, Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. We could use more players. Bridge playing is every Monday at 1 p.m. Pool players enjoy a game of pool every day after lunch (1 p.m.) Every first Monday of the month is birthday and anniversary cake at 10:30 a.m. anyone is welcome to join us. September 26 a Bridge Tournament was held with 19 tables being filled with competitors from all over the area. It was very successful, and the players had a great day. Come and join the Senior Centre. Thanks to all the volunteers that donate their time. We hope we get some sunshine so the farm folk can get their harvest done.

Winter has come early this fall! Cold days call for warm and comforting foods, such as a hot bowl of yummy stew. You can use beef, moose or buffalo to make this hearty stew. I often will mix moose and beef with very good results. This has been my favourite stew recipe for the last several weeks. The vinegar in the recipe helps to tenderize the meat. What I really like about stew is that it is a one-dish meal, with lots of vegetable and all of their healthful benefits. This is a great meal to make and have on hand for harvesters, or to cook up a big pot of stew on a cold weekend. Serve with a side of bread or buns to soak up the last bit of gravy. If you are really short on time because you are out in the field working or with an off the farm job, you can put everything in a slow cooker with excellent results. Hopefully this week we get lots of sunshine so the farmers can get the combines rolling. Stew 1 ½ to 2 pounds of stew beef, moose or buffalo 2 tablespoons of vinegar from dill or sweet pickles or apple cider vinegar or

white. 6 or more cups water 2 - 3 cups cubed potatoes 1 medium turnip peeled and cubed 2 - 3 cups sliced carrots 1 cup sliced celery 1 cup frozen peas 2 large onions chopped 1 cup chopped mushrooms (optional) 4 cloves of garlic chopped 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2/3 cup flour 3/4 to 1 cup cold water In a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven add the meat, vinegar, and water to cover the meat by several inches. Add more water if needed. Boil the meat in the water for 30 minutes. If there is a scum on the inside of the pot wipe it out with a paper towel and skim off any foam with a spoon. Add the cubed turnip, potatoes, carrots, celery and cook. Add water to cover all the vegetables if needed. When the vegetable are almost cooked add the salt, pepper, peas, mushrooms, onions and garlic and cook for 5 - 10 minutes more minutes. In a cup mix the cold water and the flour until dissolved. Pour the mixture into the stew, stirring the stew while you pour. This will thicken the gravy. Taste and add more salt or pepper as desired.

L ast Friday I began an early evening trip to the farm down Hwy 14 through Tofield and Viking and by the time I had pulled into the farm driveway was marvelling at how my timing had coincided with the night time countryside choreography I had witnessed from basically a front row seat. There is nothing for a farmer like the distilled motivation of a precious good weather day (when it has actually been there this fall) to fully deploy the harvest machinery from their usual parking places out into the dark of Alberta quarter sections. That determination to press on, regardless of hunger or fatigue, is a fabric quality in our land I grew up around for sure, experienced as a kid
riding beside Dad seated on the Massey Super 92 or 510 combine, or taking the often hairy rides in the grain truck down dirt tracks through the bowels of the coulee. I was really wishing at the end of the trip I made it instead in a plane passing overhead to see the lights of combines, tractors, and trucks filling up all those normally unlit squares of ground. By the time I had reached the west coulee edge on 619… even the sight of two new drilling rig sites brilliantly lighting up the night sky on the opposite side was not the least surprising, fitting in as they appeared to with the activity of everything else then going on that night. The slightly warm breeze keeping swaths dry, the smell of straw in the air, that particular brown opaqueness of dust hanging across both field and road… you can’t really mistake it for anything but harvest. The hanging dust did however prevent me from seeing my corner from

pavement to gravel clearly, and had to make that embarrassing loop back like I had missed the start of my next swath in the dark. By Monday obviously our brief window of good turned out-of-the-blue bad with another morning foot of snow on the ground seemingly, again. Listening to the radio for the weather doesn’t even do at this point, to be sure most of you feel lately like having 2 seasons of clothes everywhere with you isn’t enough…this fall you apparently must bring 3. Wet cold weather settling in so early and for so long is not something I remember from youth and well into adulthood… for years and years it was usually so dry throughout the year around here that moisture was always
scarce. Gave me such a sinking feeling to see nearly every field of canola or wheat from Edmonton to Vermilion, down Hwy 14 and Hwy 16, still standing or in grey tinged swathes. The impact of that will be felt. I won’t claim global warming on this one either…I remember Dad’s 8mm home movies from 1974 with him out in the field with the SnowCruiser snowmobile, forking Welger bales on to a sleigh because so much snow set in so early there wasn’t time to get any bales from the field before they were buried under all the snow. That was one rough winter but we made it through. Cross your fingers and we will on this one. Maybe cross them twice.

Communities in Bloom made a $2,000 donation to the Vermilion Senior’s Centre for their Heritage Park Landscaping project at the Town Hall on October 11. “The funds are a result of the community’s support of Communities In Bloom,” said chair, Donna Moon.

Submitted The Vermilion Health Coalition hosted a WalkABle Alberta session at the Vermilion Regional Centre on October 10. Alberta Health Services (AHS) sponsored the event; and health promotion facilitator, Graham Marsala, presented the workshop along with guest speaker, Ryan Martinson, from Stantec. Staff and councillors from the Town of Vermilion and members of Alberta Health Services, the Vermilion Health Coalition, senior’s care, and a town resident were in attendance.

The workshop focussed on identifying necessary improvements and encouraging people to walk within Vermilion through well designed sidewalks, trails, directional signage, etc. thereby promoting health and a sustainable walking community. Mayor McAuley signed the International Charter for Walking Principals on behalf of the community to assist Vermilion with focusing policies, activities and relationships to create a culture where people choose to walk. Marsala photographed areas within Vermilion that showed how residents commute by foot. His photos also identified shortcomings in areas where sidewalks and trails end creating “walking roadblocks” ie: train, crossing d e s i g n s , wa l k i n g signage, cross walk safety, wheel chair access, etc. “It was very well attended and everyone there is commit-

ted to making Vermilion a healthier community that supports walkability. It is important to consider walkability in communities to ensure that our communities continue to be great places where people want to live, work, and play. Better walkability can improve the economic, social, and equity in communities. Vermilion has joined 20 other communities throughout Alberta who have worked with WalkABle Alberta,” said Marsala. For the Town of Vermilion, the following principles were covered through the interactive workshop: a. increased inclusive mobility b. well designed and managed spaces and places for people c. improved integration of networks d. supportive land-use and spatial planning e. reduces road danger f. less crime and fear of crime g. more supportive authorities h. a culture of walking According to Councillor Robert Pulyk, participants developed action items relating to each principle for our community. He noted that Town Council will be receiving an executive report later this year from Marsa-
la’s complied data. “From my perspective, this workshop provided valuable concepts, designs and sound technical guidelines from a health perspective that the Town of Vermilion can adopt to encourage our residents to walk. I’m looking forward to the final WalkABle Alberta report from Alberta Health Services for our community,” said Robert Pulyk, Councillor for the Town of Vermilion.

Vermilion Play Development Visits Lakeland Fire Training On October 9 and 10, Vermilion Play Development travelled to the Lakeland Fire Training Centre. Upon arriving, Don Keenan and a few of his students gave the children a grand tour of the Fire Training school. The children even got to see the Helmet Hallway, where the helmet that the children decorated last year was proudly displayed! Don taught the children about fire safety and how to make a fire plan with their parents. The children then were given an opportunity to try the fire gear on, spray the fire hose, and ride in a real fire truck. The children thoroughly enjoyed their field trip and showered Don and his students with hugs and high fives! The way Canadian buyers prefer to pay is changing, and that’s changing ever y thing for those accepting payments. Payments and point-of-sale company Square conducted a national study revealing the ways buyers prefer to pay. It highlights some valuable
insights: Wallets are getting lighter. Most of us are carrying less cash today than in the past. Canadian wallets are much lighter today, with an average of only $46.50. We also haven’t visited an ATM to get cash in over two weeks. B u ye r s’ p r e f e r e n c e f o r c a r d s and speed is underestimated. The study showed that nearly 80 per cent of consumers prefer to pay by debit or credit card, and almost half list their top payment preference as tapping their card. Yet only 10 per cent of small businesses think their customers prefer tapping to pay. Missing out and not even knowing it. Most troubling is that businesses and organizations frequently lose out
on sales they never knew existed. Almost half of those surveyed avoid businesses where they must use cash, and nearly 70 per cent are more likely to buy from a local business if they know they can pay using a card. What’s holding buyers back from paying in their preferred way? It’s the mindset of some local businesses of doing business as usual. The vast majorit y of c ash -and - c heque - only small businesses don’t think they’re missing out on sales by not accepting cards. The Vermilion Credit Union made a donation of $3,000 to the Vermilion River Flying Club on October 10, at the Vermilion Airport. The flying club was one of three recipients of the annual Credit Union Golf Tournament. “We are very excited that your club can use it,” said Christa Grocock, Member Service Supervisor. In response flying club president, Shawn Jacula said, “It was very, very kind of the Vermilion Credit Union to make us one of their beneficiaries. NDP Proposed Changes To The Provincial Road Test Examination Model - Why The Public Is Cynical About Politics

On 11 September 2001, a British Labour (Socialist) government aide emailed her colleagues saying, “it was a good day to bury bad news”. The aide in question was, along with her department head, ultimately forced to resign for this cynical act of political opportunism. Albertans will remember that the NDP introduced Bill 6 on 1 January 2016, a whole 6.5 months after they took over the reins over government. When I saw the recent NDP announcement of changes to the Provincial Driver Examination Model, I was reminded of these two events. The Humboldt tragedy rightly turned a spotlight on driver training and competency standards within the Province. Alberta Transportation focused on the activities of commercial carriers. Indeed, to its credit, the government had been working with the commercial sector on Mandatory Entry Level Test-

ing (MELT) for some months prior to the tragedy. Their announcement proposed these welcomed proposals: - Establishing mandatory entry-level training for commercial drivers. - Pre-entr y requirements for new commercial carriers to reject “chameleon carriers,” (companies that change names to continue operating following enforcement procedures) However, quietly introduced on the back of these headlines was a significant third proposal. This change ends the existing private examiner model for all classes of testing. In plain language, the NDP wish to make these privately e m p l oye d exa m i n er s G over n m e nt employees. Why do the two events mentioned at the start of this piece spring to mind? Firstly, the NDP are being politically opportunist by attempting to achieve something that is their default ideological position; i.e. ever greater state involvement and interference in every

aspect of public (and of course private) life. The Minister for Transportation said this about the current system: “There are instances of harassment and even assault. It’s pretty clear that we have a system that is broken and we need to fix that.” Yet he offers no empirical evidence to support this comment (note the use of the “slander du jour” calculated to close all debate or disagreement). Secondly, I am getting a Deja vu se n s at i o n re g ar d in g t h e s p e e d of the decision-making and the lack of consultation. While I believe the need for urgency was part of an appropriate response, the 5 day notice given to stakeholders

for a one day consultation (invited 11th July - consultation Monday 15th July) suggests a predetermined outcome. In addition, no opportunity to revisit or further discuss the changes was offered to the two main stakeholder groups in this matter, the Registeries and the Examiners. Naturally, just like Alberta’s farmers, these directly af fected stake holder groups are frustrated and very unhappy. Like the farmer’s they are receptive to change and genuine improvements but believe that alternative methods are available. Alone, the anodyne act of making private examiners public employees certainly does nothing to improve any aspect. The unionization of the examiners will, if anything, decrease efficiency as these individuals will no longer have flexibility over their working hours. I could rail further about this particular matter, but I believe I have made my point. This NDP government is clearly ideologically fixated. It has no time for the thoughts, feelings and livelihoods of individuals whose lives they cavalierly intrude upon in their quest for a Socialist utopia. Impinging on farmers and their traditional working practices, shutting coal fired power stations and obliterating communities, imposing a Carbon Tax, which hits hardest the poorest in society, is all in a day’s work for the selfdeclared champions of the common man. Nevertheless, as with the story of Pandora’s box, hope remains. That hope is 2019, and the promise of an election just around the corner.

Sleep and safety go hand in hand. Maintaining healthy sleep and bedtime routines can help you to mitigate the challenges of a variable sleep pattern due to shift work. It’s important to get adequate sleep while adapting to night shifts or rotating shifts. Here are some tips to improve your quality of sleep and alertness: Getting ready for bed: Include relaxation into your daily routine and make it a priority. Avoid using light-emitting devices (e.g. tablets, smartphones) for at least one hour before bedtime. If you’re a light sleeper, try using

earplugs, a white noise machine, an eye mask or blackout curtains. Keep your bedroom comfor table, quiet, dark and cool, ideally between 17-20 degrees Celsius. At work: When it’s time to be alert, maximize your exposure to daylight or another bright light source to give your body the cue it needs. Where possible, keep your work area brightly lit. Get some exercise and eat light, healthy meals and snacks during your shift. Ask for rotating shifts to be scheduled so that new shifts start later than your previous ones.

After work: After a night shift, wear sunglasses to help keep your body from getting further cues to be alert because of being exposed to daylight. To reduce the risk of drowsy driving (especially after a night shift), find alternate ways of getting home; get a ride, take a cab or public transit or use a ridesharing service. Avoid running errands or doing chores after your evening or night shift. These types of activities keep you more alert and are best done after you’ve met your daily need for sleep. Avoid caffeine or other stimulants when you’re preparing for sleep. Discover the routine that works for
you and stick to it, even on your days off work. If you have questions or concerns about your sleep health, please discuss them with your healthcare practitioner.

We have made changes in how we fund things, but still need to do some fundraising to ensure we can continue to provide the best possible programs to our students. So we are going to try something new this year. We are going to put our main fundraising campaign off until March. We understand that September through to December is a busy time with many constraints. We are asking that students and families get involved in our campaign in March. At this time we are considering many different options for our campaign. L.E.A.D - Leaders Each Assisti n g D i f fe r e n t l y Mannville School has had a tremendous start to the year, and the students have taken part in applying for L.E.A.D jobs throughout the school. When applications came out the students had to take on the responsibility of filing them out, stating three reasons why they are a good leader, why they would like to do the position they applied for and which of the seven Habits is their favourite. We had so many wonderful applications and each month new students will fulfill each of the job duties. Some L.E.A.D jobs are Elementary Door holders, Assembly Greeters, Assembly MC’s, Morning Announcement Team, Office Assistants, Friday Recess Recruits, Kindergarten & Grade 1 Lunch assistants and Green Team are just to name a few. Thank you to all the students who applied and we look forward to having wonderful LEADERS throughout our school and community!

At our October assembly, we opened with the Treaty 6 Acknowledgement, and the singing of O’Canada and the VES song. Mrs. Moses informed us that October’s virtue is compassion – understanding how someone is feeling, and being kind and caring. Sports balls will be the prize given for the recipients of the virtue draws. Mr. Beecroft familiarized us with the perogy fundraiser that runs from October 2-12. VES makes $4 profit per bag, so please help us out with this fundraiser. Clubs were recognized – cross country, creative kids and spirit club. Mrs. Joa notified us of the spirit club’s next fundraiser, which is the Drive Away Hunger food drive, running October 9-22, where proceeds go directly to the Vermilion Food Bank. We thank Farm Credit Canada for being our partner in this endeavor. Mrs. Tomkins alerted us to the fact that VES students have already read a total of 2216 AR points. We thank Fat Cat and David, from the Vermilion Credit Union, who were at our assembly and presented VES with a cheque for $2532 to be used in conjunction with the AR program. We also congratulate Jonah and Douglas from division 1 and Mya from division 2 for being September’s top readers. Our school would like to send out a huge thank you to the Ganton Presbyte-

Grade 12 student Elizabeth Trynchuk did an amazing job representing Mannville School at Zones for Cross Country running on October10 in Vermilion. The conditions may not have been the greatest but she kept smiling and ran her heart out! Great Job Elizabeth!!High School Students Union has been busy planning Spirit Days for the year. This month on October 17 is PLAID DAY. Make sure to wear plaid and contribute to your classroom spirit points. Remember the Office Staff and all our Teacher’s Assistants are wild cards...we can decide what classroom our points go towards. Our school Book Fair is scheduled to commence October 16 wrapping up on the 22nd. The book fair will be open during school hours along with the evenings of Parent Teacher Interviews from 4:30-7:30. Our school is privileged to have Storyteller Gail de Vos come on Thursday, October 18 in the afternoon. She will be reading
to grades 3/4/5/6 from 12:45-1:45 followed by Kindergarten/Grade 1 /2 from 2:15-3:15. We look forward to having her. rian Church. We received two donations directed towards our Hot Lunch program and our Breakfast program. Each donation was in the amount of $675. The VES Spirit Team strives to make a difference in their school, community and globally. Students help plan special events for the school such as dress up days and talent shows. They plan and decorate the display case and the photo booth for the school and visitors to enjoy. Another important part of what they do is plan and organize service projects. The first project they helped with was bringing JR Robson and VES together to support the Terry Fox Day Walk/Run. The next project that the Spirit Team is heading up is a partnership with Farm Credit Canada to support the FCC Drive Away Hunger food drive October 9-22. VES will be having a Volleyball Club for Grades 4-6 students. It is starting a little late this year, so we will extend it a little later than previous years. The club will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:35-4:30. The club will start on October 9 and run until November 8. It will focus on building the students’ basic volleyball skills including setting, passing, serving, and hitting. The basic rules and strategies of games will also be introduced. Mr. Anhorn and Mrs. Riley are excited for this opportunity to work with students and look forward to watching them having fun and building new skills. Drama club started on October 10 for

Team Alberta Providing Input To Government To Help Farmers Deal With Over $3 Billion In Unharvested Crops

(Calgary, Alberta) October 11, 2018 - Team Alberta is alerting Alberta Agriculture and Forestry officials to over $3 billion in crops that remain in the field to ensure government agencies are prepared to respond promptly to unharvested acre claims and consider all options to help farmers deal with a difficult harvest. “The conditions at this point in the fall are worse this year than in 2016 when weather caused many acres to remain unharvested in Alberta,” said D’Arcy Hilgartner, Alberta Pulse Growers Chair. “Team Alberta is working to help ease the burden on farmers by initiating proactive discussions with government officials who are in a position to help farmers.” As of Oct. 10, it was estimated that the amount of harvest completed for Alberta’s major crops included: 26% of canola, 57% of wheat, 57% of barley and 34% of pulses, with approximately

7.8 million acres unharvested overall. “Farmers need an early and clear indication of what the next steps might be in dealing with severely downgraded and high moisture crops,” said Jason Lenz, Alberta Barley Chair. “Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) needs to make prompt decisions to deal with claims and communicate information to farmers in a timely manner.” Many of the crops are being harvested wet, which is testing growers’ abilities to dry product to retain some quality considering the challenging situation and also adds additional production costs. “For growers who have access to grain drying or aeration equipment, there is an additional cost to use of those tools that would not be as prevalent in drier conditions,” said Renn Breitkreuz, Alberta Canola Chair “To add to the problems of farmers without grain dryers, some grain buyers with drying capacity have reportedly stopped accepting grain as they are at capacity.”
“Much of the wheat crop left in the field will be downgraded to feed, even after drying, resulting in losses of up to $240 million from milling quality,” said Kevin Bender, Alberta Wheat Commission Chair. “We remain hopeful farmers can get back to harvesting soon but 2018 will be a major hit to the bottom line.” Meanwhile, Team Alberta wants to also share resources available to help producers deal with the challenging harvest. Team Alberta wants to remind our
fellow producers that we are in this together. Harvest is usually a stressful time for farmers, but the stress is compounded this year by the pressure of not knowing when or if the crop can be combined since snow started falling in early September. CanSkate Vermilion Skating Club hosted children of all ages on October 9, during their first CanSkate of the year. Children as young as three had the opportunity to get used to the ice and their new skates. Volunteer assistance was appreciated from the older members, and there was a lot of encouragement and smiles around the rink. Throughout the winter months, the Vermilion Skating Club will continue providing Pre-CanSkate, CanSkate, Advanced CanSkate, STARSkate, SyncroSkate, SynchroSkate PLUS and Adult Skate.
