Hundreds of people gathered in Mannville to enjoy the Mannville Fair on August 18, including guests from Lloydminster, Vermilion, Wainwright, Minburn, and Vegreville. MLA Dr. Richard Starke took part in the parade, as well as several area businesses and community groups. T hi s year ’s t hem e wa s ‘G o o d O l e Countr y Fair’, and families enjoyed watching all of the colourful floats. “We’re really excited that this is still a part of the community, and that there are volunteers who work ver y hard to make it a success,” said Brenda Walker. The petting zoo was a favourite as usual, and many enjoyed Sprinkles the Clown, a country market, bench show, and an inflatable fun zone. Food trucks

and an antique tractor show were also worth checking out. Carnival games, pedal tractor pulls, and 1UP Mobile Gaming, a magic show, Chicken Bingo by the Baking Robots, and a demo by the Mannville Fire Department offered even more enter tainment. Children scrambled during the new addition of a greased pig contest. A pancake breakfast was held by the Mannville Historical Society, and lunch was offered by McQueen United Church. The Mannville Royal Purple and Elks served supper with proceeds going to the Morritt family. To finish off, live music was performed by the Off Ramp Boys. “We have amazing community and surrounding support. We’d like to thank the donors and volunteers, as well as everyone for coming,” said Tara Tod, Hugh Fleming during the parade in Mannville. See more photos on page 2, 7 and 14. Several hundred people and approximately 30 classic cars showed up to support the Vermilion A&W location as they hosted Burgers To Beat MS on August 16. Ann-Dee Nunweiler, Lloydminster MS Chapter Program and Services Coordinator said, “A & W is our largest corporate sponsor and an important factor in helping us raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) awareness and research, as well as advocacy and programs or services in the community. The Lloydminster MS Chapter covers a huge area including Vermilion, Lloydminster, Paradise Hill, and Maidstone. One hundred per cent of funds raised goes to MS National, and this year their goal was $2 million. In Alberta, 11,000 people live with MS.” One such Albertan is 23-year-old Nicole Mauws who lives on a farm near Paradise Valley. Mauws was diagnosed with MS at 16 years of age and began her tier 1 medication of daily injections for eight months. She continued getting attacks which included really bad numbness and balance issues which were extremely difficult as, at the time, she was a competitive figure skater. From the age of 14, Mauws had lived in Sherwood Park and schooled at Vimy Ridge Academy in Edmonton to accommodate her skating. “My MS got pretty bad at age 17, so I had to quit skating for a year and seemed okay with fewer symptoms. After I graduated in 2013, I attended Reeve’s College in Edmonton where I had a really bad attack in July of 2014 and was paralyzed for three

days. I took a leave of absence from school for two months and went back, graduating in March of 2015. I then worked at an engineering company in Calgary for two years. During this time, my MS was okay, only having a couple more attacks that caused fatigue, numbness, and for me to be very unbalanced. I also suffered a lot of mental anxiety and depression, and was laid off due to the recession in November of 2016. I remained on a 2nd tier treatment for about three years. In January of 2017, with circumstances causing suicidal thoughts, and anxiety attacks, I had a stay at the Ponoka Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury.” Mauws moved back to Sherwood Park in search of work, as she was not receiving any financial government assistance. “Having MS, you really have to analyze what you are going to do for a job. Finding a low-stress job where your employer is going to truly understand is difficult. It was really a challenge to call in when I was not feeling good. I managed to work at a vape shop for almost a year before losing a cousin at the age of 25 who had Diabetes and had contracted the MRSA Virus. Seventeen days later, I had an uncle pass away and being overwhelmed with loss, I decided to move home to the family farm near Paradise Valley,” explained Mauws. Within the past few months she decided to go Vegan and had been regularly going to the gym. With her competitive figure skating nature, she realized she was pushing herself too hard, and decided to cancel her membership and practice yoga

and work on her mental health. She also enjoys going to the beach at Lindsay A. Evans Park. “It’s a great getaway. Being at home depending on my parents is difficult after being on my own for so long,” said Mauws. Mauws enjoyed having supper at A&W in Vermilion on August 16, with her niece and nephew Lily and Zack Ducharm who were visiting from Vernon, British Columbia. After their month’s visit, she looks forward to travelling back with them to go hiking, as the mountains are her peaceful place. Mauws is also planning on beginning a 3rd tier treatment which is much like chemotherapy. It is expected to have a five-day treatment course which will make her sick for the 4 - 6 weeks following. “The success rate is really good,” said Mauws who is thinking of getting into blog-

ging to share her treatment in the hopes of helping others.

This week’s editorial is meant to act as an informational article instead of looking at events happening around us. The Vermilion Voice has changed our publication date and means of delivering our paper each week, and I have noticed some confusion surrounding the change so I would like to take this time to hope-

It doesn’t take long to look up the origin of a phrase these days if you happen to let your thumbs loose on a smartphone…if, that is, you ever actually take a break from doing it for any number of other reasons. So let’s just say you have (looked it up) and that I’m not talking about being crazy and/or eccentric, although being accused of that at the end of the story might just happen to be taken as a badge of honour rather than a jab. Now one thing I was used to having around our farmyard growing up was flying things, whether it be machines or the living kind. At least on the living side it seemed to have become a family trait to do so as the home where Franklin grew up was literally ‘Bird Haven Farm’ and his mom Gladys had a Purple Martin birdhouse at her place in Ottewell up in the City. Situated at the top of the coulee, the windbreak and farm buildings in our yard had become an oasis for an avian motley of birds like Blackbirds, Bluebirds, Wrens, Goldfinches, and Barn Swallows (the

Things Have Changed

We have made this change so after 14 years the staff can now have weekends off, except for the reporters who will still be available to cover your weekend events and receive days off during the week. Secondly, the Vermilion Voice will still be delivered to our outlying towns such as Innisfree, Minburn, Mannville, Myrnam, Dewberry, Derwent, Clandon-

ald, Marwayne, Kitscoty and Paradise Valley and will be available for pick up in the usual green street boxes. Lloydminster and Wainwright will also remain the same as before with papers delivered to various businesses and green street boxes. Now for Vermilion, unfortunately, due to rate increases, we had to decide to change our delivery method and not deliver our paper through Canada Post. We know this can be a bit of an inconvenience, but we are now offering our paper

through pick up in the green street boxes as well as through local businesses. Also, if you are a person in the town of Vermilion who cannot utilize the pickup option due to medical issues and would still like to receive our paper each week, please let us know, and we will make arrangements to have your paper delivered to you. We ask for your patience while we implement the new changes, ever y change has bugs that need to addressed, and we will work hard to make this change as easy as possible.

At any rate, during the day the sight of them was actually expected, and the date the bluebirds arrived each year to nest on the pump house was eagerly anticipated. Now it wasn’t until I was older that I realized we had some nocturnal guests too, hearing them at times without even seeing them. Occasionally overhead you could hear nighthawks (especially if you were close to the river at dusk)…that and hooting of owls and the squeaks of bats. Now squeamishness might have reared its head here but across the road from our place was the old (abandoned) original Wolters homestead, and lacking windows or a closed front door had by my time became inhabited with things like pigeons, skunks, and yes…bats. Since visiting the homestead as a kid was an event that was common (Dad worked the fields around it) you got used to seeing them if the light was right. We had one get in the Quonset once flying around and I soon learned my even above average hand-eye coordination was no match in getting it out for its almost supernatural maneuverability. Living on an acreage as I do now, combining both an old style barn and two ponds, sort of invites an expectation of seeing bats. With our ponds

Looking For!

precipitating an effort in buying expensive bug zappers (that never seem to work from one season to the next) to deal with all the mosquitos to make the yard habitable during the summer, I had noticed a couple of years ago one night a bat flying around the Black Poplars in the backyard, and later that year found a dead bat on the deck. Hmmm…thinking it couldn’t hurt trying a biological approach to insect control, upon seeing a local woodworker at the farmers market offering a bat house for sale we snapped one up. It sat around for a while waiting for its place in priority but last spring I finally got the extension ladder out and put it up at the very peak at the back of the barn. Never noticed any inhabitants last year but after coming back from vacation in July, sitting out by the fire, noticed two of them wheeling in the backyard. Last night out working late in the yard I heard them squeaking and saw three in short order so thought…something is up. So after midnight I took the flashlight out and caught one in the beam flying and in checking the little bat house…sure enough, I could see one was in it. I had spent the whole day outside working…with a noticeable lack of bugs bothering me. I suppose the dry weather might have something to do with it too…but I think our little nightly

bug janitor guests are having an effect. Not saying this is going to work for you (if recoiling at even the thought is your first reaction) but I don’t mind them, the wife is convinced, and even the price is right. Now if you could just train them to get those darn wasps.

Wow, it has been a crazy couple of weeks with intense smoke covering our area. On Wednesday we awoke to the eerie darkness that never left all morning and then intensified at 11:30-11:45 as the sky turned from ghastly yellow to orange. Even though it was close to noon, it was dark indoors without the lights on. I was outside that morning at 10:30 and there was a constant rumble of aircraft in the sky, aircraft that I couldn’t see because of all the smoke. It all felt very apocalyptical. The smoke has given many people allergy-like symptoms, including blurry or itchy eyes, a scratchy throat, increased The

Some parts of Alberta have been as high as 100. Much of the province of Alberta is covered in smoke, and the smoke extends to Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba. Alberta Health Services has advised residents to avoid physical exertion outside, to stay indoors with the windows and doors closed. Drive with the windows closed on your vehicle, and be sure the car air conditioner is set on reticulating. The Federal Weather Authority is warning that those most affected are children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses. It is advised that infants be protected, as well as pregnant women. If you have an air purifier, especially with a HEPA filter, it would be helpful to run it at home. It’s also a good idea to not fry or broil foods, and avoid vacuuming to prevent more indoor air pollution. Most cooks know that swinging a wet towel in the kitchen, will clear out the smoke, (like when a pie bubbles over and burns in the oven) so it’s worth a try in your home. more creative and worked on exploring more of themselves. Short Film Underway In Vermilion

Local Director, Chris Valleau, is in the midst of filming ‘Bright Star Electric,’ a short film that will be premiering in Vermilion within a few months. The story features two electricians and highlights their working relationship with a journeyman teaching a new apprentice the ropes. “I love directing because it is something that I am passionate about. As an artistic person, I thrive on being involved in everything. I used to dabble in music and drawing, but this is dearest to my heart,” said Valleau. Valleau began writing the script in November, and it has since undergone nine or ten drafts. “This has been the longest I’ve spent on the writing stage because I have never directed a comedy before,” said Valleau. Crew members who have worked with him in the past felt that his projects surpassed their expectations.

“I think short films are especially important for this area in rural Alberta. We have a lot of people involved in agriculture, Ukrainian dance, sports, and various activities so why not have Filmmaking as another activity. Short films are something that not only gives people an opportunity they may not have, but I also feel that this is something that hasn’t been highlighted in past years. Essentially, I want to offer people an opportunity,” said Valleau. Valleau hopes to find more people in the area who are looking to have their interesting stories showcased. “Depending on the budget and scale of the project would help determine whether I could help them make that dream possible,” said Valleau. You can keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for ‘Bright Star Electric,’ as his current film will also be having a fundraiser on the day of the premiere. St. Savior’s Anglican Church held an event called Wild Church at the Vermilion Provincial Park on August 16, with people having a different experience both walking and kayaking. People from Vermilion, Wainwright, Fort Saskatchewan, and British Columbia attended with enthusiasm. The idea began after member Darlene Crawford introduced her interest in kayaking. “When I began looking into nature spiritualit y, one of the comments I heard repeatedly was, ‘I would rather sit on a mountain and think about God than sit in a cathedral and think about a mountain.’ With everyone I talked to in agreement, I read ancient texts from the early church dating back to the 3rd – 9th centuries and found that there were huge traditions of people connecting

Canadian Armed Forces Certifies Two Lakeland Energy Programs Lakeland College Submitted

Lakeland College’s heavy oil power engineering (HOPE) and heavy oil operations technician (HOOT) students now have more career options thanks to new certification from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). “I am excited for our students and the opportunities this new certification will create. Our students could have a career with the Canadian Armed Forces. We’re diversifying their future career options,” says Ben Sey, dean of Lakeland’s School of Energy. Sey submitted an application for both programs to receive a Canadian Armed Forces - Accreditation Certification Equivalency (CAF-ACE) as part of the occupational training requirement for the marine engineer technician qualification. After an

intensive application and review process, HOPE is certified to provide up to 85 per cent and HOOT is certified to provide up to 70 per cent of the training required. Both programs had to meet a minimum of 70 per cent to receive the certification. The remainder of the training is completed through the CAF. Lieutenant (Navy) Doug Gray, CD, CAF-ACE manager, explains that post-secondary institutions select the training requirement from CAF-ACE and align their curriculum to the CAF-ACE, and from there CAF subject matter experts assess the alignment. “Currently, there are a few options in CAF-ACE from Lakeland College and they have been selected for either funded education or incentives and allowances,” he adds. After reviewing the curriculums for HOOT and HOPE, Sey realized the programs were a great match to the marine engineer tech-

nician qualification. Lakeland is one of four colleges in Canada certified for the marine engineer technician qualification. The college’s firefighter training program is also CAF-ACE certified for the firefighter qualification. The certification program reduces training demands as the CAF can recruit directly from colleges and universities for occupations that are in demand within the CAF. By by-passing the training, members are eligible for advanced promotion and higher pay incentives, according to collegesinstitutes. ca. CAF-ACE is the single CAF mechanism to identify civilian training, education and vocational programs and courses that can satisfy its training requirement. The intended outcomes of the CAFACE program are to identify programs and courses that meet CAF occupational train-

ing requirements; recruit new members into the CAF; and facilitate updates to the Military Occupation List Incentives and Allowances, and the Non-Commissioned Members - Subsidized Training and Education Program (NCM STEP). The Come By The Hills Music Festival (CBTH) took place on August 17 and 18 at the beautiful Mistahiya setting. Friday evening began with the opening ceremonies and a tribute to Bill Dobson who passed away in April 2018. According to the CBTH website Dobson was an executive member (Vice President) of the Battle River Music Society – organizers of The Come By The Hills Music Festival - for its first four years. He was instrumental in so many components of the event – reaching out to prospective partners, stage and grounds design, performer contacts, beverage gardens, security and first aid, and generally – along with Jim Zadorozny – the ambassador or ‘face’ of the festival within the community. Dobson’s strength was with people; he thrived at being a ‘behind the scenes’ influencer within the region, with the ability to turn a ‘no or probably not’ into a “yes!” The music started out with Dan and Laurel, a Roots Folk duo with great songs, musicianship and stage presence, including interaction with the audience. The next musician was Steve Strongman, songwriter, and vocalist in blues and roots

music. The last performer on Friday was Brad Saunders, originally from Glovertown, Newfoundland, he is now an Albertabased Country music star and has made a name for himself in the music industry. Sanders has worked in Nashville and has been busy writing songs with others in the music business. He has opened for big names such as Aaron Pritchett, Brett Kissel, and Thomas Rhett and performed at various Country Festivals such as Country Thunger, Big Valley Jamoree and even the Calgary Stampede. The evening continued with a Bonfire jam session. Saturday morning kicked off with a special Yoga Wake-UP with Jes Merten and for all the young attendees Mary Lambert entertained with a Children’s Show and songs. Her energy and music are infectious to all those in attendance. Lambert also tours many elementary schools, libraries, daycares and music festivals throughout Canada. Other musicians performed throughout the day and filled the hills of Mistahiya with music including, The Dearhearts, Black Velvet Show Band, Tom Phillips, 100 Mile House, Daniel Gervais, Abigail Lapell and

The Thorpe Recovery Centre invites you and your friends, family, and colleagues to participate in this year’s Sober September campaign. Sober September started out as a challenge for non-addicts to participate in 30 days of sobriety in the month of September in order to gain a bit of understanding of the hardships an addict in recovery faces everyday. It has since evolved into one of our largest fundraisers at the Thorpe Recovery Centre. While many of us are not addicted to alcohol or drugs, we all have our vices. Whether it’s coffee, online shopping, fast

food, binge watching Netflix, or eating too much sugar – we imagine there’s something we could all give up in our lives that would make us a bit healthier. We’re inviting you to do just that: give it up (at least for the month of September), and become a Sober Hero*. Here’s how it works: 1. Challenge yourself and your networks to give up a vice for 30-days Be sure to register yourself or your team at thorperecoverycentre.org. You’ll be provided with a few resources to help you along the way. 2. Make it fun! Here are a few great ideas we’ve seen

done in the past: a. Have a leaderboard at home or at work (participants can add stars to their name for each successful day of giving up their vice). b. Give a prize (maybe it’s a free vacation day, maybe it’s a BBQ at the end of the month, whatever you choose, make it right for you). 3. Raise funds This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and we’d love for you to participate and not only raise awareness in our community, but also raise funds for addiction treatment. A few quick facts based on the 2018

Lloydminster Needs Assessment: • 1 in 5 Canadians struggle with mental illness and/or an addiction • 1 in 3 Lloydminsterites struggle with these same issues themselves* making it the highest rated issue in our community. • 2 in 5 Lloydminsterites identified having had a family member or friend who were impacted by addiction.
