Gearing Up For Enbridge Ride To Conquer Cancer

O n Au g u s t 18 - 19, Ve r m i l i o n’s Darren Bratrud will be cycling over 200 kilometers in the 2018 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. Bratrud’s training has been going well so far; he began in the winter by using an app and a bike stand. “ The day af ter the fair I was not ne c essarily on my ‘A’ g ame, but I wanted to get a taste of riding in the heat, and I survived it - riding 125 km. It’s actually easier to ramp up that mileage than I ever expected!” said Bratrud

who realized that much to his surprise, his body has adjusted to becoming a cyclist. Bratrud will be riding in memor y of his friend, Murray Westman, who passed away on March 24. “I will never forget the love he had for his family and for old tractors and will cherish the memories I had with him curling, farming, going all through the US pi c k ing up trac tor s. I’ll be taking on the majestic Canadian Rockies in solidarity and promise to show that cancer is no match against our conviction to conquer it! Funds raised

through The Ride will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care at the Alberta Cancer Foundation, a leader in cancer research and treatment,” said Bratrud on his online ride page. Bratrud is grateful that through his fundraising he has had the help of Rusty Stalwick and the Westman family. “They were so engaged and were able to solicit a whole different group of people. Other ride members in the city have found gathering support more difficult, and I believe the generosity in this area is largely because the commu-

nity knew Murray and me. I’ve loved having the small community backing and have become overwhelmed with the support,” said Bratrud. Vermilion’s Bernard Yonkman showcased his selection of specialty animals on August 1. A trapper back in the old days, Yonkman just got back from a trip to the Yukon and Alaska, and is now building a trapper’s cabin next to the cache in his yard. “The history of gold mining there is so interesting,” said Yonkman. His most recent highlight was that his favourite longhorn cow, called ‘Midnight Run,’ had just calved on July 30. “She’s probably the best longhorn cow in Canada. I saw her six years ago as a bred heifer and said to a friend, ‘If I’m ever going to buy a longhorn, it will be her or one like her.’ I was since going to get out of longhorns, but when I got the call that she was up for sale I couldn’t resist. There are ones with bigger horns, but none bigger in body or as pretty. She is a registered purebred with the Texas Longhorn Association, and three years ago her daughter was the Grand Champion Female at the Canadian Texas Longhorn Nationals in Red Deer. She is one awesome cow!” said Yonkman.

As lawn mowers, Yonkman has a herd of Mouflon, American Black Belly, and Dessert Painted sheep. Yonkman said, “Of all my animals they are pretty well my favourite. They follow me around like puppy dogs.” The trophy sheep are a haired sheep so they don’t have to be sheered, and they bunt and fight near breeding season much like Big Horn Sheep. You can tell the age of the sheep by the rings around their horns. “I’m a believer in quality, not quantity,” said Yonkman. Yonkman also has 13 breeds of pigeons including Frillback, Rollers, Tumblers, Trumpeters, Fantails, Archangels, and Racing Homers. He also has Black Tailed Japanese Bantam, Creole Old English, South Blue Old English, Black Copper Maran, and Deathlayer chickens. “The Deathlayers are an older German breed but are new within Canada over the past year or so. They average 250 eggs per year and lay for 6 - 7 years. They also lay right through their moult. Ordinary chickens are only good for about 3 - 4 years, and cease laying eggs while moulting. There was a miniature Rex rabbit and a Harlequin rabbit roaming the area along

with some free range chickens. There were 6-week-old Black Maran chicks, 3-week-old chicks from a Mille Fleur and Golden Sebright cross hen, and 1-week-old peachicks. Yonkman also has Ayam Cemani chickens which have black feathers, black skin, and black internal organs. Other birds Yonkman has include a Jumbo Ringneck Pheasant, a Red Golden Pheasant, a peahen, three Blue-shouldered peacocks and a Black-shouldered peacock. “The peacocks are good alarms for coyotes. Every year they grow a new tail in February, keeping it on display all day long from March – June; moulting it in July,” said Yonkman.

Aside from caring for his animals, Yonkman has enjoyed many years of fishing and outfitting and many have ogled over his collection of mounts. Though he admits that his son has succeeded him now, he still holds a bear record in a Boone and Crockett all time largest animal book.

Dr. Bell’s Granddaughter

people haven’t removed the original signs or painted them over.” Dr. Bell’s wife, Mildred, taught at the Vermilion School of Agriculture, and Aubrey was born in 1928. Dr. Bell was the 3rd president of the Vermilion Legion, a Grand Mason, and Aubrey believes he was also the coroner and on town council. Sproule said that during the recession he would give so many people service for nothing - maybe a cabbage, and that they ended up with barrels and barrels of cabbage. As a result, her dad was so sick of sauerkraut that he never ate it in adulthood. In 1937, Dr. Bell came down with tuberculosis and moved to Calgary to stay at the sanitarium. “When WWII began, he joined up, and mother said she wasn’t going to spend the war in Calgary, so they moved to Victoria where her parents were from,” said Aubrey. During the war, Dr. Bell served as a medical officer in Camp Vernon and then as the officer commanding the military hospital in Prince George until the end of

the war. After his retirement, he served as a medical examiner for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Victoria. Sproule said that after refusing treatment for cancer, during Dr. Bell’s funeral

in a huge church in Victoria, hundreds of people attended, surprising the family with support. She imagined they were past patients with standing room only and people standing outside, and a ceremonial sword arch made by attending members of the military.

An emotional journey took place as Deborah Sproule, the granddaughter of Dr. Bell, visited Vermilion for the first time from July 31 - August 4. Sproule always thought her grandfather had rented an office and never knew that he had built the Bell Building. “Just being here brings back all of these memories. Once while visiting Grandpa, my dad (Aubrey Bell) tickled me, and Grandpa called me over to say, ‘You just have to resist. Just don’t let it tickle you, and don’t laugh; decide you’re not going to feel it.’ During the next ticklefest I never laughed, and I was grateful for him helping me not to be ticklish. I Loved him; he was such an amazing man,” said Sproule. Dr. William Wilberforce Bell grew up in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and attended the University of Alberta for engineering before enlisting in WWI. According to Aubrey, at that time, whole classes would join battalions. He served Dr. Bell holding Aubrey’s brother, Douglas, with the 47th Battalion at the Battle of outside their home in Vermilion. When the war was over, he re-enrolled at the University of Alberta for medical training and continued at McGill University in Montreal. Dr. Bell then interned in Chicago during the Al Capone years. Aubrey said that all he would say about it was, “It was interesting.” Dr. Bell leased an office space in Vermilion above what is now Kin’s Restaurant and built the Bell building next door in 1923, which housed his office in the front, surgery in the back, and a legal office on the side. The Bell Building is on the historic walking tour and now houses the Vermilion Voice. A Look At Fat

In the last week, I have binge watched over 22 hours of the latest science on fat from doctors, researchers and scientists who specialize in fat and the body. It turns out that healthy fat is very good for us. As strange as it may seem eating healthy fat can even help us lose body fat and inches. All of our cells are covered in a fat membrane, and our cells need that membrane to be made of the right kind of fat to be able to do all their healthy processes. If you give your cells the wrong kind of fat, the cell membrane becomes sticky, and gummed up, unable to perform the functions of health, and therefore, create the beginning of disease. While this is straightforward, the rest of the fat story is not. Before the industrial revelation, our ancestors ate healthy fats like butter, lard,

coconut oil, bacon, all of which are saturated fats. Heart disease was almost nonexistent. In the early 1900’s, industrial vegetable oils and shortenings were hitting the market. Heart disease began to increase dramatically. Along came Ancel Keys, who wrote a research paper in the 1950’s that vilified saturated fat, and the cholesterol in eggs, as the cause of heart disease. Perhaps you remember a time when eggs were thought to be bad for your health because of their cholesterol content? Unfortunately, the research was cherry-picked by Keys who selected the seven countries of 22 that supported his hypothesis, and today we know that even his conclusions were terribly wrong. As the low fat craze continued, people developed more heart disease, and saturated fats were replaced with what they thought was a more healthy fat, such as vegetable oils, and trans fats such as Crisco and margarine. People became more and more overweight. Now I will admit that the

term ‘vegetable oils’ sounds very healthy, but don’t be fooled, they are not. They are the type of fat that gums up the cell. Over and over during the documentary series, “The Skinny On Fat,” bad vegetable fats were targeted as a problem for healthy cells, and because their chemical structure makes them more readily oxidized in the body, which is also very bad as it causes inflammation at the cellular level. Surprisingly today, consuming bad fat is looked on by many of the experts as worst than smoking. It is the processing that has damaged the vegetable fats to the point that they are often very unhealthy. One may wonder how this problem could even exist in our food chain, but it is simply a situation in which you just need to follow the money trail. Current science is showing that our body needs healthy fats, such as virgin olive oil, olives, avocado, coconut, butter, fatty fish, MT oil, hemp oil, nuts and egg yolks. When buying oil, look for cold-pressed or virgin.

For example, a highly processed olive oil will lose many of its health benefits and its flavour. Our body needs healthy fats for the manufacture of our hormones and cell walls. Several studies have shown that those who consume the most butter have the lowest risk of diabetes. The butyric acid in butter turns off inflammation in the brain. Secondly saturated fat in the absence of high glycemic carbs can be beneficial in that it is very stable and does not oxidize easily and can be used for the building of hormones and cell walls. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a meta-analysis on 21 different studies that tracked close to 350,000 people for over 13 years and determined that there is no correlation between saturated fat and heart disease or stroke. So that is good news for us to be able to eat how our grandparents and great-grandparents ate, who had a lower incidence of heart disease while eating saturated fat such as real butter, eggs, and bacon.

Spending a few days recently in close proximity to one of the world’s natural water wonders like Niagara Falls…and some of man’s earlier attempts to harness it like the hydroelectric dams for the power potential contained and the canals for transportation it offers…it gets you thinking about where water holds its place in your little sphere of the world. Alberta for all its natural blessings doesn’t have nearly the same amount of water as some of the other provinces, which isn’t all that difficult to figure out looking at them from the air. There is an awful lot of water down there that isn’t part of a Great Lake…it’s just not here. A small park along the 401 highway

Under The Water, Over The Dam

where we stopped for an evening lunch break on the drive back to Ot tawa had a small little river beside it and it reminded me somewhat of the Provincial Park in Vermilion…it had a small weir, bike trails, a spray park, and a nice big playground. Fresh water in the right places has a tendency to cause that…we like spending our recreational time around it and it doesn’t take long for amenities to begin when people pile up nearby. After mentioning the weir to the kids (and explaining what a weir was since they had not heard the term before) it made me think that I needed to travel around with them a little more and make them acquainted with all the ways water does work for us around here, whether it is irrigation canals down south or the weir we have here in Vermilion under the Highway 41 bridge that holds back the reservoir that makes its mark in the natural

and recreational use it brings amid the Park. Seems funny after all the camping we’ve done at the Park for the Fair each year that maybe we take the lake for granted but I can remember when it wasn’t down there and the small little bridge over old Highway 41 was pretty much it, except for the old electrical station that is long since gone. Last summer the kids and I took the canoe and kayak down to the docks and had a great time pad dling and c irc ling laps around the buoys placed for the college rowing club. It certainly made for some good stories and to string yarns about days back in high school Phys. Ed outdoor classes where we were learning about skills like the J-stroke and how to get back out of the water from an overturned canoe. Believe me…high school boys getting the opportunity to dump classmates in the drink, and on purpose, never got

wasted and it was rather over enthusiastically accomplished. Not that the water down there has always been the nicest color mind you either when you were floating in it…it is the Vermilion River after all…but it was fun while it lasted as long as your mouth was closed. We seemed to get away with a lot more tomfoolery back then too (or maybe we really didn’t if memory ser ves)…admit ting myself to have paddled under the bridge once before. I just never went over it…but I saw someone who did even though in the end all they did was get wet and bend the canoe sort of in half. And like I was describing to my oldest in an explanation of what a weir was last week, it isn’t something you want to mess with. It has a job to do…holding back water for us (and a few visitors) to enjoy it. Hope you had a great time last week at the Fair.

Book Launch: ‘Recollections – Growing Up On The Prairies’

Author, Nell Charlwood, was born in Vermilion in 1919 and grew up on a farm about 9 miles from town. Her father, Neil East, was a farmer and her mother, Dora East, was an Australian nurse who moved to Vermilion after her marriage in 1912. Nell met her Australian husbandto-be, Don Charlwood, when he was training in Edmonton with the Royal Australian Air Force. The Empire Air Training Sc heme had many bases across Canada to train air crew for Bomber Command in England during World War 2. Nell and Don married in 1944, after Don completed 30 operations on Lancaster bombers over Europe. They moved to Melbourne,

Australia in 1945 and Nell remained living in Australia until her death at 97 in 2017. She never took out Australian citizenship and was a proud Canadian all her life. As a child Nell attended the small local Carleton school, riding her horse each day with elder brother Ellis. When she graduated to Vermilion High School, she boarded with a local family during the winter as it wasn’t possible to travel the 9 miles to school over winter roads. After high school Nell trained to be a teacher at Camrose Normal School. She then taught at small local schools – Mannville, Telford, Calmar, and Parkdale School in Edmonton. In the 1980s Nell began writing her recollections of life in Alberta so her

The Mannville Old-Timers’ Society

Submitted It all beg an at a meeting of the Mannville and District Old-Timers in the Mannville School on March 14, 1925, on a motion by A.E. Williams, seconded by Timothy O’Connor that we form an Old-Timers club. The first members were those who resided in Mannville before 1906. The Old-Timers Society was never a money-making organization and liked to operate on a more or less breakeven budget. Quoted from the 1983 Trails to Mannville & Districts Book. Down through the years, the Annual Fall Roundup had always been the highlight of the year’s activities. The biggest under taking for the OldTimers organization was the building of the cairn in front of the Mannville School. On this cairn are the names of the original homesteaders and the location of the land they settled. In 1983 the Old-Timers organization took on the task of publishing the

book “Trails to Mannville & Districts.” For this to take place with government funding assistance, the organization had to comply with rules and became a formal society. Since then dedicated members have spearheaded this society, and with the passing of many of them, their children stepped into their positions on the executive and kept this society and its original focus alive. Each year in October to carr y on tradition, the Mannville Old-Timers So c iet y hosted its Annual Round up banquet, program, meeting, and dance. Every year the dedicated volunteers spent countless hours in search of connections to the homesteaders featured that year. Letters were written, phone calls were made, and families were invited to at tend. Ever yone was welcome to join the society and the October festivities.

Vermilion 4-H Sheep Achievement Day

The members of the Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club were very busy over the last month as they prepared their animals for their annual Achievement Day. The event took place on July 24 at the Ag Society Sheep Barn. The day started off with the 4-H Pledge and judging to follow at 1 p.m. The rest of the day was filled with ribbons and prizes from various classes. Webb’s of Vermilion put on a delicious donated BBQ supper at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., the market classes began with both market lambs, and market goats followed with the

sale of 20 animals. Our 4-H members love to give back; volunteering around town or at local events. The 4-H program is all about “Learning to Do By Doing.” Taking the time to help others is rewarding in itself, so when the members decided to raise a charity lamb, the only part unknown was who was going to reap the rewards of their efforts? A lamb was raised by the Krips family, and all the proceeds for the sale of the lamb would be split 50/50 between the Susan Moses Christmas Dinner and Kale for Kaiel. On Achievement Day, the charity

lamb was purchased by Agland and then generously donated back to the club to be sold again. When all was finished, $3000 was raised between 20 buyers. Each of the recipients will receive $1500 in a presentation at a later date. Thank you to the Krips family for raising the animal and to all the individuals, families and businesses that contributed to this project. Achievement Day was a huge success thanks to our sponsors and all the buyers. Thank you to everyone for coming out to support us. Beyond our recent Achievement Day, there have been some members who

have already attended Provincial 4-H Camps. More of us are anxiously looking forward to the 4-H camps that are ahead in August. Two of our members, Mia Westergaard and Emery Zayac are hosting exchange students from Japan. They will be visiting for another couple of weeks before heading home. Ashley Corbiere attended Selections at the beginning of May and was awarded a position as Ambassador for the Northeast 4-H Region, along with a trip to Ottawa in 2019. We have an active group and as we finish up our record books, the plans for next year are already being discussed.

Vermilion Youth Took Part In Re-enactment Of Historic Pioneer Trek

par ticipated in a “ Pioneer Trek ” or “Trek” for short. T h e s e yo u t h j o i n e d a l m o s t 2 0 0 other Latter-day Saint youth ages 12 - 18 from North-eastern Alberta in the Cold Lake Area. For five days they

left behind their cell phones, computers and comfor table beds to dress in period costumes and push or pull pioneer handcarts. “In 2014 we did a very similar project for our young people” says Pres.

Robert Mendenhall of the Sherwood Park Stake. “It was such a positive experience for them, as well as the nearly 100 adults who work as leaders and support staff, so we decided to do it again in 2018.”

Vermilion Fair Sheep Show 2018, July 26 & 27, 2018

Submitted The Vermilion Fair Sheep Show was a success with 27 exhibitors showing in various classes, with about 98 head of sheep in the barn and through the show ring. Our exhibitors came from Vermilion, Lloyd, Spiritwood, Ponoka, Clyde, Kitscot y, Frenchman But te, Marshall, Blackfoot, and Rosemary. Thank you to all the exhibitors who

Submitted Sponsorship Opportunity “Know Your Numbers” Program. For many men, health is not always top of mind and it can be very difficult to fit regular doctor visits into their schedules. That is why Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre launched the first MAN VAN in 2009. The MAN VAN is Canada’s only mobile men’s health clinic. The program offers on-the-spot Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood tests, as well as blood pressure, blood glucose and waist circumference measurements at select “Know Your Numbers” Clinics. In 2012, Prostate Cancer Centre launched a second MAN VAN, dedicated to serving communities in rural Alberta. The MAN VAN goes where men go. Clinics are offered at a variety of locations, such as hardware stores, pubs, sport stadiums, community fairs, rodeos, and indigenous communities. During a typical 3-hour clinic, the MAN VAN tests up to 60 men. A visit usually takes less than ten minutes, there is no appointment necessary and there is seldom a lineup. The friendly staff and volunteers help to create a relaxing atmosphere and the van is equipped with leather seats and a flat screen TV to create an environment where men can relax while taking charge of their health. The Van is operated by a driver, a clinic host and up to four clinical staff responsible for drawing blood, administering additional measurements and providing take-home materials, educating the participant on the importance of early prostate

cancer detection and their overall health. The MAN VANTM Program Our MAN VAN is committed to providing PSA blood tests to men throughout southern Alberta. The MAN VAN is owned and operated by Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre, a non-profit organization operated in Calgary since 1999. We are located in the Southern Alberta Institute of Urology building located at the Rockyview General Hospital. The Centre focuses on the early detection and treatment of prostate cancer. We support excellence in prostate cancer awareness, education, diagnosis, treatment, advocacy and research. Annually, there are over 18,000 patient visits by men and their families to access multiple programs and services at our Centre. In addition, over 6,000 men a year visit our MAN VAN program in Calgary and throughout southern Alberta. Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre does not receive any government funding and relies completely on private contributions, corporate sponsorships and events. Coming together to support men with prostate cancer, companies, individuals, and families play a key role in raising both awareness and funding. On average men live five years less than women and out of the top 15 causes of death, men lead in 14. Men also are more likely to avoid preventative care, delay treatment, pay less attention to health information and are less likely to have a health care provider. For many, a trip to the MAN VAN is the first step to becoming more proactive about their health and lifestyle. In 2016, the MAN VAN officially launched the “Know Your Numbers” men’s health initiative at select clinics. This program builds on the success of the MAN VAN by offering waist circumference, blood pressure and random blood glucose measurements. These are often good indicators of a man’s health status and are very closely linked to some of the main health issues facing men, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity. We offer education and literature about these measurements and then follow up with a phone call six weeks afterwards.

Hope can even be seeing a survivor that inspires hope in you. Not that life will ever be the same but there will be ”life.” Hope will be in investing and risking in the future. A quote from SR Joyce Rupp OSM in an article Keeping Our Hope Alive In Troubled Times” tells the story of a boy who was banished to a wilderness. When he returned he was asked how he had survived. He said,“ The night was cold and the sky was dark but far off I

saw a shepherd’s light on another mountain. I kept my eyes on the glow in the distance and I dreamed of being warm. That is how I had the strength to survive.” Hope is often looking at another survivor and recognizing that they are alive and moving forward out of the deep pain. Such support is found in the Society, and the Group is a support in which survivors of such loss and pain gather to support each other. In doing this, they find hope and look to mentors in the group for a glimpse of hope. Those grieving, companion each other on the journey.
