The Vermilion Voice newspaper staff was excited to welcome members of the community to help them celebrate their 14th anniversary on July 19. During the celebration attendees had the opportunity to sit and chat while they enjoyed cake and coffee with Voice staff and express their views regarding the paper. “Days like today is our opportunity to say thank you to our clients and readers for their steadfast support throughout the years. It also provides us the opportunity to sit and chat with our readers and clients in a personal, relaxed environment and gives us the
opportunity to receive feedback from the people who attend; which is very important to us,” said Susan Chikie. The Voice is locally owned and operated since 2004 and prides itself on covering local and area events, providing excellent customer service to their advertising clients as well as supporting local groups and giving to the community such as the VIBE program, Hearts and Hands and collecting hats and mittens since 2016 for the local schools. “The Vermilion and Area Voice was started in 2004 and our paper is always changing. Our goal is to provide the best quality newspaper in the area and I believe we are doing that. We
constantly have people stopping by or calling us to tell us what a great job we are doing. Of course, there are bumps in the road but we take those bumps and learn from them. We are always brainstorming to see how we can make changes to provide the best quality newspaper for our readers and advertisers. We enjoy it when we have the opportunity to give back to the community through these types of functions.” said Chikie. Any donations received throughout the afternoon for cake and coffee will be donated to Hearts and Hands a community charity which provides families and individuals in need a gift of food and other essentials.

Vermilion C.O.P. Hold Training Session

The Vermilion Citizens on Patrol (C.O.P) is in their 10th year and still patrolling the streets of Vermilion. On July 14 in conjunction with the Alberta Citizens on Patrol Association (ACOPA) a tr ainin g se s s i o n for area C.O.P groups was held at the School of Hope. Members from Vermilion, Lloydminster, Wainwright and Viking attended. The session also acted as an information session for anyone who wanted to learn about the organization. Robert Gollan, a retired RCMP officer, instructed the course and passed along a lot of wisdom from his policing days and informed members of the role of C.O.P. “Citizens on Patrol are the eyes, ears, and voice of the community. You
are an extension of the RCMP and are meant to work in conjunction with them. You are not vigilantes,” said Gollan. Elna Eidsvik started the Vermilion Citizens on Patrol back in 2008 because of increasing incidents of vandalism. “Vandals were coming onto private property and destroying plants, and lawn ornaments; businesses were being defaced and damaged. I went to Town Council and told them I was prepared to do the legwork to get the group started,” said Eidsvik. Throughout the ses sion, Gollan spoke on several topics including the C.O.P. image. “ We n e e d to c h a n g e t h e i m ag e of C.O.P., you are not just a group of people out driving around, it has been
proven that this service deters crime,” said Gollan. The Vermilion Citizens on Patrol are always in need of more volunteers and would like to encourage anyone 18 years of age or older to contact them to find out the particulars of joining the group. “You have to go through the official training offered by ACOPA, do ride alongs, and have a criminal record check done to join. Insurance is provided to group members through an ACOPA contracted insurance provider, so is not considered a personal requirement to joining.” said Eidsvik, who also explained, “We work closely with local RCMP Liaison Mike Rose and we find the local businesses to be very support-
ive. Our patrols happen 24/7 especially during busy times at night and at fair time. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep their eyes open in our community.” C.O.P. is vigilant for the safety of its members and Eidsvik says that they never patrol alone and they do not get out of their vehicles and expose themselves to dangerous situations. Citizens of Patrol President Elna Eidsvik recently received the Community Justice Award for 2018 from Alberta Justice & Solicitor General. On Friday, June 22, 2018 Zory Kurpil passed away in the Vermilion Health Center at the age of 94 years. Zory is survived by her Daughters Arlene (Eugene) Gnyra and Joanne (Don) Goebel; 7 Grandchildren and 11 Great-Grandchildren. Zory was predeceased by her Husband Mike Kurpil on May 21, 2004; Parents Dmetro and Katerena Sorochan; Sisters Mary (Steve) Metrunec, Annie (Sam) Oleksy, Lena (Sanky) Kryvenchuk and Sophie (John) Prodaniuk. A Celebration of Life was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2018 at McQueen United Church, Mannville, AB. A Night Market is well underway in Vermilion. After many people sharing that they couldn’t make it to the Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays during the day, Lighten Up Therapy and Wellness (493150ave) started a night market from 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays during the summer. The idea is for people who work during the week and can’t make it during the day to shop, can still have an opportunity to shop local for fresh items. It started out being a place for youth entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services but has quickly expanded

into more than that. It is a place for people to get out and socialize. Over the past few weeks, they have had groups of people come to meet at the market to enjoy each other’s company while indulging on some locally made sweets and treats. Owner of Lighten Up Therapy and Wellness, Amber Howard shared that her vision is to build the market as not only a place to support local entrepreneurs and businesses, but to create a space for the community to come together. “Vermilion is a wonderful place to live! Many people from surrounding commu-

nities come to Vermilion to shop and love the small town feel. An evening summer market is a great attraction for the community and something to do for all ages,” said Howard. It has been fantastic to see so many kids stepping up to learn what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Hearing some of the kids spend hours making their treats and products then watching them get so excited when someone buys from their table makes the whole night worth it! “My favourite part of the night, however, is watching all the kids support each
other by purchasing something from each other’s tables and helping each other with set up and take down of their tables. Communities and businesses survive by supporting each other, whether that be lending a hand, volunteering, donating or purchasing a product or service,” explained Howard. The Fair is here at last, and while I do enjoy the Fair immensely, I also find that it is a signal that the summer is halfway complete. I don’t

know about you, but I find once the Vermilion Fair is over it seems as though summer seems to slip by faster than it does during the first part, but I’m not going to let that get me down as I do love Fall and I love the Fair. This week our town is going to see an influx of visitors and excitement is going to be filling the air in antici-
pation for parade day and the kick off to three fabulous days of events and midway rides, but don’t let the excitement distract you from taking care and caution. While the Fair can be an exciting time, it can also be a dangerous time if as a community we don’t be vigilant in keeping our children and even fellow adults safe. So

as a reminder, please do not drive while intoxicated under any kind of substance and remember to keep your children close, we don’t want to see any sad, crying faces when they can’t find their parents. With that said enjoy the Fair, have a ton of fun and make memories that will last a lifetime. See you at the Fair!!
Chocolate Cake

I h ave b e e n p u t in charge of making some birthday cakes this weekend. I am trying hard to decide which two cakes to make. I am thinking chocolate, carrot, white, chiffon and hummingbird. It is so hard to narrow it down, but maybe I should go with the first two that popped into my mind. So chocolate and carrot it is. I love this chocolate cake recipe, but I know that not everyone is as big a chocolate fan as I am, thus the two cakes. I hope to make them as layer cakes. As I write this, I am also bobbing back and forth on selecting the chiffon or the hummingbird cake as the second cake. Trying to decide what other people would like is a bit difficult. I’m baking the chocolate one for sure because I love it, and I will be at the party, so that’s an easy decision. I have been renovating my kitchen, dining room and pantry for several months, so hopefully, I can find all my baking pans, measuring cups etc. It has been a lot of work packing up a kitchen and pantry into boxes, reconfiguring cabinets, painting ceilings, and walls, laying new flooring and then unpacking it all. Some boxes are still packed and some things I can’t find at all. I
had my fridge in the dining room for several weeks, and when it was finally returned to its proper place, I oddly still wanted to go into the dining room to get something out of the fridge. It has been said that it takes 21 days to create a new habit, and the recent fridge experiment proved to be very true, for mind conditioning of automatic behaviour for a short time. Chocolate Cake 1 cup butter 1 1/4 cups sugar 2/3 cup cocoa powder Pinch of salt 2 eggs 2 cups hot water 2 cups all purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons baking soda Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cream the butter and the sugar together. Beat in the cocoa powder, eggs, and salt. Add 1 cup of hot water (not boiling) and mix well. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Stir in the remaining cup of hot water. Bake at 350 degrees until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, this time will vary depending on the type and size of baking pan. Baking guidelines are for 30 – 35 minutes for 2 round layer cakes, 20 minutes for cupcakes and 40 – 45 minutes for one larger 9 x 13 cake. Allow this cake to cool completely
before icing. It cuts better the next day will try adding 2 teaspoons of vanilla. It is as it sets, rather than right away, so it is a delicious eaten un-iced or finished with a good recipe to make a day ahead. I found chocolate buttercream icing. cutting it within the hour it was a bit crumbly, but much better to cut as it set. After 3 days the cake was still very moist and delicious. Although the recipe does not call for vanilla, I think the next time I make it I

A f te r s p e n d i n g two weeks of touristing in a mini-van around the roots of a maple tree of Canadiana, tapping into a firehose level stream of the syrup from one corner of Quebec and Ontario to the other in the process...I’m buckled here to the seat on the plane, deep in thought, riding home wondering if any of it is going to actually stick. It does sound rather sterotypically Canadian to have that element of doubt about things like that (actually questioning the stickiness of maple syrup???) and it would certainly be a shame if some of it didn’t. However if the packing I did in my luggage of my mom’s bottle of that amber gold liquid didn’t suffice for the journey back, I might find my unpacking that it fulfilled that process for me, literally. A family wedding can be an awfully convenient reason/excuse to combine a trip that your youngsters should have memories of for a lifetime...and you wonder too what impressions of Canada, and what they experienced, will stick with them beyond just getting off the plane. Being born and raised on the Prairies, there are many things about your land and your country you acquire and take at face value, without really getting to see or know them first The

If you do not wish to have spraying completed adjacent to your property, “DO NOT SPRAY BETWEEN SIGNS” signs are available from the Agricultural Service Board office. There is no charge for these signs however landowners are responsible to erect and maintain them on their property. A reminder, however, that if a landowner does not want adjacent road allowance sprayed, the landowner will accept full responsibility for noxious weed / brush control on said road allowance, in accordance with County Bylaw 714 – 1973. The County of Minburn No. 27 Agricultural Service Board will be commencing the roadside mowing program in 2018. The program will consist of mowing all road allowances with up to a fifteen foot cut from the shoulder into the ditch. Persons wishing to cut hay on a road allowance need to complete all cutting prior to the mowing contractor’s arrival. If hay has been cut and is in swath, mowers will go around that particular swathed ditch however all standing grass will be mowed with absolutely no exceptions. Kurt Bensmiller Claims 4th Calgary Stampede Championship

Af ter ten straight days of chuckwagon racing, Kurt Bensmiller earned his fourth Calgary Stampede Championship on July 15. With great racing throughout the week, Kurt had won the Aggregate two days prior. Also on July 13, Kurt and Versatile Energy worked together to raise over $20,000 for the Humboldt Broncos. One night of the tarp sponsorship was sold to Thru Tubing Solutions raising the bulk, with additional
funds raised by selling jerseys. at the Stampede this year. Vermilion Peewee Lacrosse - C Division Provincial Champions! Submitted
With a five-game winning streak, Vermilion Roar Lacrosse brought home the 2018 Peewee C Division Provincial Championship banner. The Alberta Lacrosse Association Minor Box Provincials and David Fehr Classic Tyke &Novice Festival were held July 12-15 in Calgary. “The kids played their hearts out and did a phenomenal job,” said peewee assistant coach and Vermilion Roar Lacrosse Association president Ryan Adams, “ We couldn’t be prouder of them and how they did this season. Going to an event like this is a great experience for the kids. The competition is fierce, and they got to play some really strong teams. We also got to watch some amazing games, cheer on our girl’s teams, and really bond as a
team. Next year is going to be amazing!” Lacrosse runs from April - June, and registration is online. “All the games were exciting, but the gold medal game against Innisfail was fast-paced and intense. Our goalie Regan Sargeant and their goalie worked hard the whole game,” says peewee head coach Travis Stachniak, “Winning the provincials with a score of 7 - 4 was great. It was close the whole way through. I’m really proud of how these 15 kids played. We are all really excited to see that banner up in the Vermilion Stadium.” Team staff included assistant coaches Chris Wilson and Marc Languin and manager Diane Harms. The team will be showing off their trophy at the 2018 Vermilion Fair Parade!

Climb Thru Time Museum in Paradise Valley is kept running by volunteers and with donations received at the door from those who want to check out this unique grain elevator museum that houses numerous objects and art portraying the birth of agriculture and rural life in Western Canada. A coffee/tea room and snacks is open for those who would like to take a moment and relax. Climb Thru Time is open from the beginning of June to the end of August, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Blossoms and greenery awed onlookers during Vermilion Communities In Bloom’s Annual Garden Party along 52 Avenue and Park Drive on July 18. Approximately 50 people attended the event, and president, Donna Moon said, “It was very successful with beautiful gardens and lunch. We would like to thank everyone for opening up their gardens, Paul and Faye
Yaceyko for hosting the beef on a bun and dessert, as well as everyone for coming.” The selection of gardens included those of Jan Scott, Arlene Whitton, Paul and Faye Yaceyko, and Faye’s sister Sylvia. “It was wonderful that the weather turned out, and it was a wonderful place for a garden party. I asked Faye what her secret was and she said, ‘bigger planters.’ They were just amazing!” said Kim McMinnis, Communities In Bloom volunteer.

The Northern Alberta Reined Cow Horse Club was back at the Lakeland College Arena from July 14-15 giving their members an opportunity to show off their skills. Competitions in Cutting, Working Cow Horse and Rein & Box were offered at all competitors levels for the youth, green as grass, non pro and open riders. The club had a great show with horsemanship and learning, front and center. Our club was started with the green as grass competitor in mind. Classes enable riders of all levels to compete with a legal AQHA bit in one or two hands and as skills develop, compete in the tradition cow horse equipment. This opportunity encourages the sport and provides opportunity to compete with the horse you have, in the equipment you own, making it affordable. This system introduces beginners to coaches who can help
develop the skill of both rider and horse which in turn just makes our four legged friends that much more enjoyable. Our open riders - coaches and trainers - are always willing to help any competitor with just the little question of “would you help me with___?” As president of the club, I am very thankful for the support the trainers provide all our members, whether they are a regular client of theirs or not. It is this attitude which keeps everyone coming back. Our club also encourages the social part of being a club and a horse owner. With the cool weather on Saturday evening, we were grateful for a roof and walls to gather for a simple BBQ and visit time. We will be back in Vermilion on August 18 - 19. If you are caught on the railway tracks you could get a $287.00 provincial ticket. Remember, trains do overhang a minimum of 3 feet from the rail and if an object is in this zone it will get damaged as trains can’t stop quickly. -Never take a shor t cut under or between a train as you don’t know when it will move, the result in this decision is a wrong choice which can change your life forever, cross only at designated crossings. In 2017 there were 72 people killed and 44 serious injuries in the railway industry and all were preventable. Why do trains whistle? Train whistles are safety devices that alert motorists and pedestrians to the presence of an approaching train. They also warn trespassers to get away from the rail rightof-way. Locomotive engineers follow a detailed set of instructions in the Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) that outline when a whistle must be sounded and the whistling sequence to be used. Who regulates train whistling, the CROR falls under the Railway Safety Act as a Federally regulated railway, CN complies
with this Act and Transport Canada’s rules and regulations. In case of an emergency, motorists or pedestrians are encouraged to contact the CN Police Emergency Number 1800465-9239 which is posted at every public crossing on our network. In addition to the

The Canadian Armed Forces food rations offer a variety of different high energy meal types including salmon, chicken, and spaghetti and meatballs. Each meal pack (IMP) offers 12,000 calories. “If we have access to pots and potable water with a Coleman stove they can be warmed up slowly in about 10-15 minutes. Because we are on the go, 90 percent of the time we tend to eat them cold,” said Lt. Jessica MacAllister from Garrison Wainwright. She went on to say that when in the field, some are better than others and that they have another option that when mixed with a half-ounce of water, a chemical reaction heats it. “It’s a wonderful invention that adds no additional weight to our rucksacks,” said Lt. MacAllister. The IMP’s are packaged in Ottawa, and offer a range of cultural varieties including halal, poutine, vegetarian, curry, etc. Ration packs are created and tested for palatability and appearances as well as how long they can be

preserved. “Most last 2-4 years, but vary depending on the contents, for example, bread,” said Lt. MacAllister. According to Lt. MacAllister, the testing also focusses on morale and packs include dessert; some fruit, and some sugary delights. Similar to offering pop machines at the garrison, she explained that even though they may not be the healthiest choice, that these extra items boost morale. Packs also contain a juice high in sugar that helps replace electrolytes to keep members’ energy up. “There is a strong preference among members for the breakfast selections, which include sausage and eggs. The bread with peanut butter and jelly is always a favourite if you don’t have time for a main course. You can eat it on the move, and it provides a good quick fix. Some members even hoard the breath mints and chicklets gum for when they get a chance to relax. Managing Riparian Areas

Are you a farmer, rancher, or acreage owner with a “riparian area” – that is, the green zone of land that borders some sort of water feature? Perhaps you have a stream running through your property, a small pond out back, or even just a wet spot in your cropland. If you do, then the next question is: are you managing your riparian areas to their full potential? Riparian areas are the portions of the landscape strongly influenced by water and are the transition between dry land and surface water. They are often easily recognized by lush growth of grasses, sedges, cattails, and willows. While they only make up 2-5 per cent of the total land base, healthy, intact riparian zones perform many functions that may go unnoticed but provide many environmental, social, and economic benefits to themselves, their community, and the greater watershed. They store water in wet years, recharge groundwater, and release water in dry years, adding moisture to nearby crops and forage. With deep binding roots on vegetated banks, riparian areas slow the velocity of runoff, decrease damage from flooding, and protect banks from erosion. The vegetation also traps sediments and filters nutrients, improving the quality of the water downstream. Riparian areas are places for recreational opportunities, and alternative enterprises such as timber, firewood, fruit, nuts, mushrooms, and medicinal plants. Last, but not least, they provide habitat, shelter, and food for wildlife, birds, fish, amphibians, insects, and livestock. Managing riparian areas can involve a number of different strategies and tools
depending on the type of waterbody and the current land use. A good place to start is to look at air photos to get a bird’s eye perspective on the area and to see where opportunities might lie. Another very useful tool is a site assessment to determine current riparian health and potential to provide functions, goods, and services. Cows and Fish has developed a relatively simple Riparian Health Assessment that can be conducted by producers, land managers, and stewardship groups to obtain baseline conditions. The assessment looks at several parameters including vegetation cover, invasive species, and tree and shrub establishment to determine a score that can be used to quantify changes over time. Cows and Fish also conducts a more extensive and in-depth Riparian Health Inventory if more detailed data is necessary for future monitoring. With the baseline work complete, there are a number of beneficial management practices (BMPs) that could be employed to improve the riparian area. These could include exclusion fencing, fencing riparian pastures, alternative watering systems, tree planting, permanent grassed buffers, and sustainable grazing management. Often a visit to a demonstration site or a neighbor who has implemented one or two BMPs can help in determining which would suit a particular area or operation. Once the management plan is underway, the project may be eligible for funding through Provincial programs such as the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP), local watershed groups or the ALUS program. ALUS Canada is a national not-for-profit organization that supports the delivery of the ALUS

program across the country. Active in six provinces and eleven Alberta Municipalities, the ALUS program works with farmers and ranchers to produce valuable ecological services on Canadian farmland. The ALUS program has been supporting local producers in the County of Vermilion River since 2010, working with them to establish and maintain projects that provide cleaner air, cleaner water, and habitat for wildlife, birds, and pollinators. To date there are more than 30 producers who have improved over 3000 acres in the County. On September 21st - 22nd, the Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society (AWES) is partnering up with Cows & Fish and ALUS in the County of Vermilion River to deliver a mini-course that aims to help landowners manage their riparian areas in ways that benefit their operations, their communities, and the environment. The
fee for this course is just $20 per participant. This fee has been greatly reduced, as the majority of course costs are being covered by a grant from the Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program (WRRP), administered by Alberta Environment and Parks. The primary objective of WRRP is to increase the natural ability of the province’s watersheds to reduce the intensity, magnitude, duration and effects of flooding and drought through watershed mitigation measures. Widespread implementation of the riparian restoration and management practices taught in this course has the potential to mitigate flooding and drought throughout the watershed while also providing direct benefits to landowners. CLUBROOT of CANOLA FIELD INSPECTIONS CVR will be conducting RANDOM inspections of canola fields within CVR July to September as required by the Control of Clubroot Disease Policy and the Alberta Agricultural Pest Act. Inspectors will inspect at least 3 canola fields in each township by walking into the canola field and pulling up plants to check the roots for clubroot galls. If the sample is confirmed as having clubroot, CVR will contact the landowner. CVR will take all precautions recommended by Alberta Agriculture during sampling, including wearing disposable booties and sterilization of boots and equipment before and after entering a field to avoid spreading this disease. Staff will only enter fields on foot, so you will see our truck parked in the approach or along road. We ask our STAFF to: Ensure vehicles are clearly marked with the County logo and unit number. Use primary approaches/laneways where possible for entry Have appropriate ID visible. Inspectors are happy to talk to ratepayers And we ask PRODUCERS to: Notify us in advance if you wish to be contacted before any inspection of fields. Notify us of any special conditions or circumstances we should be aware of (ie biosecurity) Feel welcome to stop and talk with Ag Inspectors when you see us out in the fields.
