Celebrating A New Fire Truck

County of Minburn and Village of Mannville residents celebrated the arrival of a new fire truck at the Mannville Fire Department on July 9. Deliberating since last year on how they wanted to improve, the Mannville Fire Department specified and handpicked modifications for their newest emergency unit. The department is extremely grateful for the large investment on behalf of the County of Minburn, with contributions and sponsorship from the Village of Mannville, ATCO, and Alliance Pipeline. The total c ost of truc k 920 was $218,000, and it will be used for highway operations as well as on medical and rescue calls. “This truck brings monumental changes to our department. One of the biggest advantages is that with a winch and every truck having a Firefox it offsets manpower with technology so that one person can operate the truck. Inside there is a remote control to operate the pump and bumper control which helps with occupational health and safety, and as a first responding unit, the truck is equipped with a thermal imager and all LED lights,” said Dez Shubert, Mannville Fire Chief. Shubert went on to explain that keep-

ing it lightweight was a goal to avoid getting stuck in the field where fires are. Having worked with firefighters from London, Shubert incorporated some European design including dual reels with a mid-pressure pump that runs a recommended 450 PSI and maximum 600 PSI. The truck has an upper walkway and a winterization package with a diesel heater and houses all of their wild land equipment, rescue tools, stars equipment, and a full basic life support service unit. The Waterax pump can run .01 per cent foam at very high pressures and is widely recognized across North America, so if there is ever a need for parts, they will be easy to acquire. The Department requested that the cab have hands free Bluetooth so that by running software from each member’s phone, anyone coming to the call can find the truck or the person operating the truck can find out how far away other members are. They also requested a particular type of scene light which they are very happy with. Without even turning on the truck, the LED light emits 80,000 lumens from a 12-volt battery, and having no generator allows less noise and less weight on the truck. “Ninety-nine per cent of what we do ends up being done with our lightweight trucks. The new V-10 is so much lighter

than the Diesel, which is a big advantage and often allows fires to be put out before the big trucks arrive,” concluded Shubert. “What they have done has changed quite a bit from the old style and looks really nice,” said Cheryl Anderson. U15 Boys – Provincial Soccer Champions

At Soccer Provincials in St. Paul from July 6 - 8, the Vermilion U15 Boys claimed the title of Provincial Champions, and the U15 girls finished fourth. The U17 boys also competed in the Soccer Provincials in Camrose and finished with a Silver medal. “The Vermilion Strikers U15 Girls had a successful season complete with their 4th place finish at Provincials! Their love for the sport was apparent through the skill and commitment they brought to each game. Every player displayed an incredible amount of heart, and their support for one another on and off the field was never-ending. Way to go girls!” said Lindsay Willis. U15 Boys head coach, Allan Drinkwater, felt lucky to have coached the same group of boys for two years in a row. According to Drinkwater, the team

did exceptionally well this year. They started the season strong with three wins and two losses in the league, won Bronze at a tournament in Sherwood Park, Silver at the Camrose Night Classic Tournament, Gold at Lakeland Cup in Vermilion, and won Gold at the Provincial Tournament with one draw and three wins. A highlight for the team was that they only had one goal scored against them during provincials. During their Gold medal game, the final score was 2 – 1 against Athabasca. “The parents were an amazing group of people who all came to suppor t the Provincial Tournament. The boys showed up to play, and through the tournament, they even persevered through injuries - they wanted it. The boys worked extremely well together, keeping g o o d c ommuni c ation and teamwork, as well as playing off of each other’s strengths. The level of

excitement was through the roof when they won; I was really lucky to be a part of it! The support of the having the Vermilion Soccer Association behind

Wow!! Where has the time gone? T h e Fa i r i s h e r e ag ain nex t we ek , and it seems like just yesterday we were planning the float for last year. This year the parade is themed ‘Sew It,’ ‘Grow It,’ ‘Show It’ which means there will probably be a lot of creative floats this year. The WCA Midway is always a popular event for both young and old, and it will certainly be entertaining to go and see everyone having fun on the rides, and maybe even a few scatter sickies. I have never been one for the rides as I would definitely be one of

the sick people floating around. I even get motion sickness just watching the rides twirl. If you are someone like me and the rides are just not your thing there are soooo many events to take in morning, noon and night. The Vermilion Ag So c iet y along with its volunteers has always done a beautiful job organizing the three day fair which is jam-packed with livestock events, the trade show, exhibits, open stage, bingo and of course the popular beer gardens and evening entertainment and so much more. Our quiet town will soon be bustling with visitors, and while we are a very trusting town, I do think it is important to remember to be vigilant with our children. Don’t let little ones wander off by themselves; it can be pretty scary

when you turn around and discover your child is on the missing list and it can be even more traumatic for them when they can’t find their parents. We have to remember that with the lights and so many things to look at children do get distracted easily. As for us adults, I think it is important for us to remember that even though it is a weekend meant for fun, we all need to take care and caution with how much we drink and keep it planted solidly in our minds not to drink and then drive. No one wants a DUI or death on their hands. Enjoy the weekend with your friends and loved ones, make memories that will last a lifetime and above all else stay safe. Have wonderful fair times everyone!

Summer and bananas just seem to go together. Bananas have a lot of health benefits, maybe that is why we love them so much. When bananas are a little on the green side, they contain natural prebiotics that help us absorb nutrients, such as calcium, by producing digestive enzymes. A banana and a dairy product are a good combination to eat together for increased protection from ulcers and increased calcium absorption. Bananas are high in pectin fiber and aid in movement through the digestive system. Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, and potassium. A fouryear research study has shown that the high potassium content found in foods such as bananas help reduce blood pressure and the risk of stroke. Overripe bananas are higher in anti-oxidants and contain Tryptophan, which the body uses to create serotonin, the “feel good” happy neurotransmitter. This cake is a delicious way to use up a few overripe bananas. You can serve it with a cream cheese icing, or with whipped cream and fresh sliced bananas. When you do your own baking, your cake is filled with real food ingredients, instead of the unsafe safe fats and excess sugar often found in commercial baked goods. When you use real butter your cake tastes a little better as well. Creamy Banana Cake 1 1/2 cups 10 percent cereal cream 2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 3 ripe bananas 2/3 cup butter – room temperature 1 cup sugar 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/2 cups cake flour 1 cup all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda



Combine the flour, baking soda and baking powder in a separate bowl and stir. In a large mixing bowl, cream the Proudly presents butter, then add the sugar and beat until mixed. Stir in alternately the cream and flour mixture until just blended, Fold in the Tuesday, July 24th bananas. Pour on the cream and lemon juice mixture, beat until well mixed. Stir 8:00 PM in the one chopped banana. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. From Dr. G Stewart-Hunter Wishes to express heartfelt thanks to all who participated in his amazing birthday party on July 5th. I was absolutely stunned and quite unable to express fully, or even clearly, my appreciation. I knew that there was a party coming, of course, but had anticipated coffee and cake with some of the staff where I work. Then....... I was preparing to leave when my neighbour, in Highland dress, bag piped me out of my house into the road, to be attacked by a bright yellow Mustang from Webb's sent to carry me to the building, where another Piper played me in......to see long lines of tables and friends waiting. I was sufficiently in shock that I was hardly able to walk cleanly to my seat. Then came the speeches, even more unexpected, and presentations, including beautiful, incredible flowers- which I love. Eventually, I rose to say thank you, but, in my surprise and bewilderment, did not perhaps, do a very great job. I did not, naturally, have a prepared speech. So this is a quick follow-on. THANK YOU My sincere thanks to everyone who participated. To neighbours Mick and Linda, to the organizers, Lee DeVries, Tracy Keller, Jan Scott, Irene Teasedale and participants, The Town of Vermilion, the stores, including - Webb's, both drug stores, Flower shops, and others whom I have yet to discover, not least my own family. I cannot remember my speech in reply, but I do want to make sure that all understand how much I appreciate your kindness. At work, I am part of an incredible team, where everyone's opinion is valued and where everyone has the right to express it....politely! We have been assessed as one of the best nursing homes in Alberta, and I humbly agree.....(well, no so humbly). Before turning to and training in long-term and palliative care I worked almost entirely in acute Care situations- again with a caring and compassionate team. Even my immediate "bosses" refrain from beating on me! Not only in Medicine but in this whole area the atmosphere is such that I have no intention of leaving. I love the people, the atmosphere and also the remarkable medical establishment we have. You are stuck with me! God Bless you all.

Buddy Bensmiller Honoured At Calgary Stampede

Rodeo elite gathered at Calgar y Stampede to witness area resident, Buddy Bensmiller, receive one of the Pioneers of Rodeo Awards on July 9. Bensmiller was inducted for his long list of achievements as a former chuckwagon driver including being a threetime Calgar y Stampede Champion, a three-time Aggregate Champion, an eight-time Canadian Champion, and a two-time World Professional Champion. Bensmiller has also been inducted into the Cheyenne Hall of Fame as a nine-time Champion, won three Safe Driver awards, and was awarded the Bill Kehler Award at the Ponoka Stampede. The c eremony hig hlig hted what Bensmiller has done for the spor t,

along with other inductees Marlene Eddleman McRae (barrel racer) and John Scott (active supporter of rodeo). Bensmiller spent 34 consecutive years driving chuck wagons at the Calgary Stampede and said that it was his family and the love of horses that kept him competing. He loved giving his horses another 10 – 20 years of life in a sport that they maybe weren’t made or bred for. ‘It was a great honour to be recognised. I am thankful that the committee in Calgary would think of me and those that were honoured alongside of me. When I retired, I thought we were going to stay home, but with everyone else on the road, and now working for the WPCA, I still get to be around the family,” said Bensmiller.

The 112th Annual Vermilion Fair is just a week away, and that means the Parade is also on its way, so put on your thinking caps and enter a float in this year’s Parade!! The theme for the Fair is “Sew it, Grow it, Show it” and that theme resonates into the Parade. “Sew It” signifies the handiwork and skills showcased at the Exhibit Hall and th Trade Show; “Grow It” focuses on the agricultural pieces from carrots to cattle; and “Show It” is all encompassing of all that is shown or put on display during the Vermilion Fair from photography to antique tracParade Ends Here tors, to sheep”, said the Vermilion AgriculVermilion Hospital tural Society. Rogan New President Of CCAA

Alan Rogan thrives on new challenges. And he’s now undertaking a national one as the 13th president of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). “New challenges keep you thinking and keeps your creativity going,” says Rogan, Lakeland College’s athletic director. “Every time you sit on a board, I think it’s professional development because you get an opportunity to learn from people. You take the good and you learn from the things that you don’t agree with, and you create your own style.” During his two-year term as CCAA president, Rogan says on top of the traditional presidential duties there are three key initiatives he will be directly involved in: reviewing the association’s governance structure; working towards the implementation of a national Responsible Coaching program and work-

ing through the application from a new conference to join the CCA A . “My role is to make sure we are all moving in the right direction and to supply some leadership, but everyone on the executive and board is involved in Collegiate athletics and we have a veteran staff in the office which means there is a lot of experience around the table,” says Rogan, who served as CCAA vice president of eligibility for the past five years. “I get to work with an incredible group of people who are similarly focused in their mindset on what they want to see and they want to supply a great experience for student-athletes across the country.” Volunteerism at every level of amateur sport is important, says Rogan, adding he hopes his involvement inspires studentathletes to give back as well. “If we are asking our student-athletes to engage in the community and volunteer their time, then really we should

be leading by example,” he says. “It shows our student-athletes and community that we’re not just about Lakeland, we’re part of a broader picture and about our community. And in this situation our community is Canada.” Rogan joined Lakeland in 1986 as the equipment room supervisor. He coached the men’s volleyball team for 13 years and spent one year at the helm of the women’s team. In 2006 he was named Lakeland’s athletic director. A former Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) president and executive committee member, Rogan spearheaded the growth of futsal in the ACAC. I n 2 0 17, R o g a n was named the first ACAC Athletic Director of the Year and

the CCAA Athletic Director of the Year. “I think these awards were the culmination of years of work, being able to retain dedicated staff and having quality studentathletes who share the department’s vision. If everybody buys in, then it makes your job easy. My greatest accomplishment is building a department that works together towards growth and success in the three Cs: classroom, competition and community engagement,” says Rogan. “I love what I do and if you love what you do, then you’re not really working.”

Express Pizza Cooks Up A Storm At Community Oven

Approximately 200 people attended the Community Oven on July 9, with guest cooks, Express Pizza. Cornerstone Co-op donated pop, water, and over 50 pies, and families were thrilled to get outside to enjoy the evening. Express Pizza Owner/Manager, Adam Zuain, was thrilled with the turn out as the whole idea was to be involved and get the community together. “Keeping things local would be superior, so moving forward we plan to continue helping out around town,” said Zuain. Ah, the lazy, hazy days of summer. The sun shines brightly––and strongly. When it does, these tips will make your time in the sun safer. Check the UV index, which measures sun strength. You can be sunburned in as little as 15 minutes. When the UV index is between 3 and 8, everyone, especially

kids, needs sunscreen. If it’s above 8, these tips will reduce your risk of sunburn as well as heat rash, heat stroke and, over time, skin cancer. Safety tips • Cover up: Wear wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking sunglasses and thin light-coloured clothing • Limit the rays: Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors

Apply and re-apply sunscreen: Put it on every two hours (at least). Match the sun protective factor (SPF) to the UV index and your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Babies have thin skin and can burn easily. Keep them out of the sun. Use an SPF 30 lip balm on your lips. Stay hydrated: Bring lots of water with you when spending time

Junior Sewing Camp

Children aged 9 – 14 were overjoyed to take part in the 2nd Annual Junior Sewing Camp at Extraordinary Extras in the Lakeland Mall in Vermilion from July 9 – 13. Participants included youth from Lloydminster, Wainwright, and Vermilion, and another session of the camp was held the week prior. Throughout both instruc-

tor Faye Yaceyko, assisted the children as they chose their colours of fabric, learned to operate a sewing machine, and worked on several projects. They made headbands, bags, pillows, and pillowcases. The children said that learning the new skills were challenging but super fun. “They were very determined, and it was nice to see the enthusiasm,” said owner, Carol Wasylik.
