Free At Last

Jubilation filled the hearts of onlookers as Olaf the Owl was released from captivity and immediately took flight south of Vermilion on July 5. Olaf had been entangled in a barbed wire fence on July 30, 2015, when Sue Chikie stopped to help. After a quick trip to get a cage to transport the Owl, Sue Chikie and Rod Hunter cut the wire holding the Owl captive and brought him to Vermilion. “He still had a piece of barbed wire stuck in the joint of his wing,” said Chikie at the time. When taken to Alberta Fish and Wildlife in Vermilion, they were advised that if the bird was left with them, he would most likely have been destroyed. Olaf was then taken to veterinarian, Dr. Tim Goodbrand, owner of the Vermilion Veterinary Clinic, who removed the piece of wire that had four barbs on it from the bird’s wing. Hunter then took the Owl to the WILDNorth Rehabilitation Centre in Edmonton. Upon his arrival Kim Blomme, WILD-

North’s Director of Wildlife Services, identified that Olaf was a juvenile bird and said, “Structurally the bones are okay, nothing is broken and the shoulder is not dislocated which could easily have happened from all the thrashing around.” Blomme went on to explain that since being found with one of his eyes yellow and one orange, that he likely experienced a broken blood vessel in the eye from all of the hanging and thrashing on the fence, but the eye shortly returned to normal. The big concern at the time was tissue damage as the wound was right through the wing. In order to repair it, Olaf received approximately 12 sutures on each side. Blomme explained at the time that the good news was that the ligament along the wing was still intact. She went on to say that there would be a problem with scar tissue affecting the wing extension. In 2016 Olaf faced further challenges and underwent unconventional treatment. “We were getting a bit dismayed by the lack of progress in gaining height when he was flying, so after another vet check and

X rays, the vet suggested laser therapy. This is a first, the Owl is currently undergoing laser therapy in an attempt to break down scar tissue that has built up on the patagial ligament of the injured wing that is preventing him from flying properly. Blomme said they were fortunate that the chiropractic vet just happened to be there when the laser treatments were being performed when she offered her services, which included feeling along the owl’s shoulder and spine. This bird has to hunt, it would be different if it was a grouse which just eats off the ground,” said Blomme in 2016. Throughout the three years The Vermilion Voice kept in touch with WILDNorth and reported a few times on Olaf’s condition and at times it looked bleak; that he may even have to be put down, but they did not give up. A phone call on July 3, 2018 from WILDNorth stating that Olaf could be released at his original home was a huge surprise for everyone. According to WILDNorth, Olaf had been fed live mice and quail, which he was able

to catch in his flight area at WILDNorth. On several occasions, the staff at WILDNorth had to make judgement calls about his survival. Due to receiving expert care and having several people not give up on him, Olaf was scheduled for release on July 5. Transferred near to the location he had been found, Olaf was surrounded by a group of supporters eager to witness his release. “We were extremely happy to be able to release Olaf after so long in care. He required multiple surgeries and intensive training to fly and hunt again. We are grateful for your community’s interest in his well-being!” said Blomme. “Everyone was excited for Olaf; it was a great feeling to know that he has a chance at survival. After three years of being in the rehabilitation centre, it was amazing to see him to get a chance to spread his wings and fly freely in the area he was found. We will be watching out for Olaf,” said Chikie.

Dr. Stewart Hunter’s 95th Birthday

Dr. Georg e Stewar t Hunter was surprised to see approximately 100 people on July 5, who had gathered at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre to surprise and congratulate him on his 95th Birthday. Hunter arrived in style in a bright yellow Mustang, compliments of Webb’s Ford. He was then ushered in by Bill McIldoon who played the bagpipes for the special occasion. “Cars and bagpipes are two great loves of Dr. Stewart Hunter’s,” said emcee Lee DeVries. She continued, by telling a story from his youth in which he learned about hard work and determination. Apparently, he wanted to learn about elbow grease, so he had been sent to town to look for some. Inquiring at local shops, each owner would send him on to the next shop until one had him brush and groom his horse until his arms ached, and he got

the concept. His tenacity didn’t stop there. Dr. Stewart Hunter attended medical school at the University of Liverpool in England, and later received fellowships in each of his department specialties. He also taught many post graduates and Vermilion Health Centre staff members, as well as provided several book reviews and lectures. Dr. Stewart Hunter joined the military’s Royal Air Force and travelled to Nigeria, East Africa, and Canada. He worked in Barrhead and Fairview, before moving to Vermilion in 1979. His practice has included 40 per cent general practice and 60 per cent obstetrics and gynecology. In 1995, he took a laparoscopic course, and post retirement has been able to make a lot of house calls, and worked in palliative care. Dr. Stewart Hunter enjoyed being a family man and some of his children were at the party, while others sent a video full

Presentations were made by Councillor Robert Pulyk on behalf of Mayor Caroline McAuley, and Judy Woywitka on behalf of MLA Dr. Richard Starke. “Dr. Stewart Hunter is a beloved resident. He has delivered countless children, and provided comfort to many seniors. Words cannot express his commitment to our community,” said Pulyk. “My heartfelt congratulations! Birthdays are a great time to reflect with family, friends, and loved ones. Your contribution to so many residents can only be described as extraordinary,” said Dr. Starke’s letter. After being showered with gifts, Dr. Stewart Hunter gave a response, and people went on to enjoy visiting over cake and refreshments. “This is so overwhelming. I don’t know how to say thank you, but I’m not going to refuse it!” said Dr. Stewart Hunter before receiving a standing ovation.

He was the captain of the University of Liverpool’s fencing team, the owner of a Canadian Yacht Certificate, a ski patrol instructor, a rally driver and racetrack driver, a motorbike owner, and an airplane pilot. He was also an artist in charcoal, oil, acrylic, and watercolours receiving his degree in 2002. He was also a man of faith, an actor, and a literary genius, a proud Scotsman, a big game hunter, and a golfer at times.” said DeVries. Dr. Stewart Hunter became a patient in 2002 after suffering a heart attack, and Jan Scott who had worked with him for over 30 years read a poem that he had written at that time titled, ‘Coronary’. “Have you lived with love in your heart,” read a line in the poem. ‘A Love Story Between A Surgeon And A Town,’ was another poem read during the party that was written specially for

exhaustion is one part of the spectrum of heat-related illnesses that begin with heat cramps, progresses to heat exhaustion, and finally to heat stroke. The body cools itself by sweating and allowing that sweat to evaporate. Sweating requires enough fluid in the body to make sweat, air circulating across the skin, and low enough air humidity to allow that sweat to evaporate. The causes of heat exhaustion include activity in a hot environment that can overwhelm the body’s ability to cool itself, causing heat-related symptoms, and living in a hot environment without adequate access to water for dehydration. Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include: profuse sweating, weakness, nausea, vomiting, headache, lightheadedness, and muscle cramps. Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke when the body’s tempera-

ture regulation fails. The person develops a change in mental status, becomes confused, lethargic, and may have a seizure, the skin stops sweating, and the body temperature may exceed 106 F (41 C). This is a life-threatening condition, and emergency medical attention is needed immediately. Anyone can be in danger of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, but infants and young children are at risk because their temperature regulation mechanisms are not fully developed, and they are also dependent upon others for water and appropriate clothing. The elderly are similarly at risk because of underlying medical conditions that limit the ability to sweat including poor circulation, skin changes, and chronic medication usage. Socioeconomic issues increase the risk of heat exhaustion if access to air conditioning is limited. This c ake re c i p e is very versatile and perfect for celebrating summer birthdays or wedding showers. T h i s r e c i p e m a ke s enough for a beautiful layer cake. It can be two layers, or cut the layers in half with a long serrated knife for a decadent 4 layer cake. Fair warning, the cake must be completely cooled before you ice it, or you will be dealing with sliding layers. It can be served iced with butter cream frosting or with whipped cream and berries such as blueberries, strawberries or raspberries. The delicate flavor complements both vanilla, chocolate and berry ice cream. There are many variations you can use with

this cake recipe such as adding 2 cups of blueberries for a blue berry butter cake. For a lovely spice cake you can add 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ging er and 1/2 teas p o on alls pi c e. Another variation is to can add 4 tablespoons cocoa powder to one third of the finished batter and swirl it in for a marble cake, or divide the batter into thirds and do mocha swirl cake with one of the batters flavored with instant coffee. The secret is room temperature eggs and butter, creaming the butter and sugar together till its light am fluffy, but don’t over beat as it will separate. Having once made a 2 and a half d ay d r i ve a c r o s s the country to Ottawa previously at the turn of the Millennium, the midnight Air Canada red-eye repeat of that journey of 2800+ kms as the crow flies feels about as close to teleportation as it gets on the latter version of the two, Chilliwack lyrics of rocket flights and seeing the morning on the other side notwithstanding, sleep never really came in my case. I’ve always been just a bit of a night owl since the advent of 24/7 television and staying up through the

next day with just a cat nap is something I’ve done often enough that it doesn’t throw too much of a monkey wrench into the spokes. The first day or two is going to play hard with the old circadian rhythms in my crew for a bit though as the last journey we had of a simlar fashion was far enough back in the youngsters memory they hardly remember any of it, and we never left the Mountain time zone doing it. For the kids it will be effectively a series of firsts that they will remember the rest of their lives, so the energy, anxiousness and enthusiasm has been curious to witness as a parent who knows their personalities enough that the envelope is clearly being expanded. sufficiently not to wake a suburban Ottawa neighborhood? Well I resigned that fight at about 7:30am. One thing about spending time in places like an airport that operate in a 24/7/365 fashion is the number of people that live a significant portion of their lives on a somewhat off peak compared to the norm fashion. Their certianly is an appeal to that lifestyle in some respects, in not navigating through the crowds and traffic of rush hour life by a small deflection in time of day. Having worked the odd job involving night shifts in construction or being on call for customer support for clients that were located around the world... it can be rather disconnecting though from everyone immediately around you

doing it for any length of time, not to mention how hard it is on you physiologically. Humans are a rather bounded lot to the rhythm of the world itself and no matter how much technology we create to virtually push those borders, in the end we’ve been attuned to the physical of our world for far longer than our technology would trick us to believe and eventually your body will let you know. Being on the end of 36 hours and still plonking away at keyboard... and still being semi-coherent enough to do it...seems to be something that isn’t all that uncommon any more in the world these days. Lets hope the story makes sense an my reliance on the technology to get it to you wasn’t set up by any fly by night operations.

Age limits Some exceptions apply, but the minimum age by law for operating off-highway vehicles is 14 years. The AHS recommended age is 16. Know the risks When not used safely, ATV risks include: • Scrapes and cuts • Strains and sprains • Broken bones • Dislocated joints • Bruising

Safety tips: • Choose an ATV that’s right for your size to reduce a chance of rollover or serious injury. • Wear protective equipment such as an approved ATV helmet, eyewear and gloves. • Wear pants, long sleeves and boots to prevent cuts and scrapes. • Ride during daylight hours, at a safe speed, with other people around. • Carry a first-aid kit with each vehicle. • Don’t drive while or after using alcohol or other drugs. • Take a certification course through the Alberta Safety Council. •Visit myhealth.alberta.ca and search for ATV safety.

Area Youth Donates $9,400 To Ronald McDonald House

On June 23, hundreds of people gathered at the Lea Park Rodeo grounds to support the 1st Annual Ronald McDonald House Barrel Race. Fourteen-year-old, Ryen Freeman, from Marwayne organized the event as a way to give back to an organization that supported her throughout the past year. In the spring of 2017, Ryen and her family spent five months at the Ronald McDonald House in Calgary after Ryen lost the use of her legs due to the trauma of several concussions. After spending five months in a wheelchair, her recovery is remarkable, and Ryen is not only able to walk but able to work her horses and compete in barrel racing again, which has been a passion of hers from a young age. Before her hospital stay, Ryen braided and assembled reins as a way to raise her own rodeo entry fees. Throughout her recovery, Ryen continued making and donating the reins to other rodeo events as a way to keep her connected to the industry while she was away, as well as

to help develop her dexterity and balance. According to Ryen’s mother Tressa, it costs the Ronald McDonald House Foundation approximately $30,000 per month to operate. Once the family chose to host the barrel racing event, the Lea Park Rodeo Association donated the grounds and their time during the event, so all of the proceeds totalling $9,400 were donated to the Southern Alberta Ronald McDonald House. Because Ryen is a youth donor to the Ronald McDonald House, the Shaw Giving Team will match her donation. The event saw 201 competitors including peewee, youth, and open barrel racers. “Thank you to everyone who supported this event; it means the world to me. It will go on to help out so many more families. I love the small community feeling in Marwayne. Knowing everyone creates such an amazing support system,� said Ryen. Ryen’s story will also be aired in an interview on CTV News Calgary on July 10, at 5:55 p.m. To see more about the barrel racing

Mannville Canada Day Celebrations

The Village of Mannville jumpstarted its Canada Day Celebrations on July 1 with a large attendance for the pancake breakfast at the gazebo on Mainstreet held by the Chamber of Commerce from 8 -10 a.m. along with a village-wide scavenger hunt. The 2018 Mannville Classic Cruisers Canada Day Show n’ Shine began at 10 a.m. With almost 50 entries, a dozen other classics just coming out, and over 350 people coming through the displays event organizer, Dwayne Gorniak said “We are overwhelmed and humbled by the size of our first show, we look forward to our Indoor Show n’ Shine in September and into next year’s Canada Day outdoor Show n’ Shine being even bigger and better!”

Bodurka was released from custody on a Promise to Appear in Vermilion Provincial Court. This matter remains before the courts. Ve r m i l i o n R C M P r e c e i ve d a c o m p l a i n t o f s t o l e n p r o p e r t y t h at had been sold to an unknowing individual. An investigation was initiated into the stolen property. As a result of the investigation, 52-year-old Michael Patterson, 27-year-old Bowdrie Patterson, both of Wainwright, Alberta and 47-year-old Shannon Hank of Vermilion were charged with possession of stolen property obtained by crime over $5000 and trafficking in stolen property. Bowdrie and Michael Patterson were also charged with trafficking in methamphetamine. This matter remains before the courts.

Upcoming Summer Concert

The Vermilion Folk Club will be hosting a Summer Concert featuring Mick Flanner y at the Legion on July 24, with a potluck supper at 6:15 p.m., and concert at 8 p.m. The Irish singer-songwriter is an award-winning and double platinum selling ar tist. At age 19, Flanner y became the first Irish musician ever to win the International Songwriting Competition in Nashville. He began playing guitar at age 14 and wrote songs through his teen years

all while training as a stonemason before he released his first album at age 21. Flannery now has five albums, including two that were placed top ten on the Irish Albums Char t; ‘Red To Blue’ stayed in the number one spot for three weeks. Flannery spent time writing some of his albums in Berlin, and his current album, ‘I Own You,’ covers themes of social injustice and inequality. According to www.mickflannery.com, he grew up in Blarney, County Cork, Ireland listening to Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and

Jim Croce. He currently resides in County Clare, Ireland where he is working on his six th studio album. We celebrated Accelerated Reading Day on June 27. At 10:45, we had an assembly in the gym. There was club recognition for students in the following clubs: basketball (36 kids), gamer’s club (15), milk monitors (33), spirit club (51), drama (20), hot lunch helpers (62), volleyball (16), Grade 6 VIBE advisory (16), science fair (67), art club (28), gardening club (7), yoga club (11), crochet club (36) and library club (38). Staff farewells took place for Mrs. Throndson, Miss West and Miss Groat. We thank Vermilion Credit Union for sending Fat Cat and Mr. DeVos to our school, and for providing the top two

readers with a cash prize. From 11:45-1p.m., our students and their families had a picnic on the playground. In the afternoon, we the students enjoyed sundaes and one last chance to spend some time with their buddy class. Congratulations to all VES students for reading a total of 17 575 AR points this year. The top division 1 reader was Jonah Gould (400 pts) and in division 2, it was Matt Chmielewski-Tremblay (376 pts). We thank Mrs. Webb and board trustee member Jim King for being present and offering their best wishes. Congratulations to all the Grade 6 students. We will miss them at VES and wish them the best in junior high. There will be a few staffing changes for VES next year. Mrs. Throndson is expecting her first child in August, and will be dearly missed at VES for the next year. Miss Shaw, who is currently in Grade 3 will drop down to Grade 2. We wish Mrs. McLaughlin all the

best as she has decided to stay home for another year with her baby and Mrs. Goodwin who has resigned her position to be a stay-at-home mom. We also wish Miss West good luck as she has accepted a position with Blessed Sacrament School in Wainwright. Mrs. Tupper is back in Grade 2 and Mrs. Doherty will once again be our assistant principal. Mr. Anhorn, coming to us from Paradise Valley, will be our new principal. Mr. Beecroft is back in Grade 5, Mrs. Tomkins is back in Grade 3, and Ms. King will be half time music and half time Grade 6.
