Rodeo Goers were drawn from all over to watch and partake in the action of The 65th Annual Wainwright Stampede held from June 21 to June 24. There were numerous breakfasts, lunches and BBQ’s held throughout Wainwright during the Stampede with many donating the funds to various clubs, societies, and charities. Wednesday, June 20 was the start of the Wainwright Stampede with Rodeo Slack Performances at the grounds during the day, and at 5 p.m. the Downtown Stampede Kick Off was held with Children’s games, activities including face painting and entertainment, BBQ, and beef on a bun. The ‘Wainwright Stampede Riders’ a precision drill team opened each of the CPRA Rodeo Performances with their Grand Entry showcasing the flags of the Wainwright Stampede’s major sponsors.

The CPCA Chuckwagon Races were held four times throughout the Stampede and Thursday night was graced with perfect weather for the event. The CPRA Rodeo Performances featured the Wild Pony Races which kept the crowd excited throughout their three-day schedule. Friday and Saturday night not only provided rodeo goers all the action from the CPCA and CPRA it also gave attendees the opportunity to kick up their heels during the Friday night Rodeo Dance held at the Elks Hall featuring the live band Roadkill. The Stampede Cabaret on Saturday featured Jerry Sereda at the Peace Memorial Multiplex. Sunday, June 24 was a day of hooting and hollering as the “Run For The Championship Buckle” was held in the afternoon and the “Battle For The Buckles” was in the evening for the big finale. The Vermilion and Area Crisis Line held their 7th Annual Walk/Run Event on June 21, at the Vermilion Provincial Park. The Crisis Line has been operating since 1983, and local volunteers continue to raise funds to keep the service in our area. Local Crisis Line members have continued to host the walk in memory of long-time Chairperson of the board Susan Howard who initiated the walk/run. “We started the walk to raise awareness that the Crisis Line is available. If we can only help one person, that would be amazing. For some people all they need is to have a listening ear,” said Chairperson, Amber Howard. The walk welcomed everyone from all fitness levels and provided a 2-kilometer walk, 5-kilometer walk and run as well as a 10-kilometer run. The race offered racers the option to be timed and receive a medal if they came in first, second or third.

Crisis Line Walk Success

“This year we had an official timer come from Edmonton to time the race and pass out bibs. By being timed in this event racers who enter into other races and need official times to enter can use their race times from this event to qualify. It was nice this year that we had combined both walking and racing in the event,” said Howard. The walk/run kicked off on staggered times with the 10k run starting at 7 p.m. During the walk /run; attendees were able to utilize the water stations along the route as the temperature was in the high 20’s with a gentle breeze; they also enjoyed refreshments that followed provided by Crisis Line Members. “It was warm for sure; thank fully there was a lot of shade on the trails from the trees. It would have been harder if the sun was on us the whole time,” said Shane Mascarin who ran in the 10k run. In the timed runs, the 5-kilometer medalist in the men’s were: Thomas McAleer - 1st, Dennis Collier - 2nd, and Edwin Sanford - 3rd and the women’s

Valley Lodge – Appreciation Event

Donors were thrilled to be given a tour of the newly completed wing at Valley Lodge during the Vermilion and District Housing Foundation’s (VDHF) Appreciation Event on June 21. Gleaming with excitement, a few residents joined in the fun viewing their possible prospective rooms as Capital Campaign members led tours describing the new amenities and features. The VDHF began their Living Well Modernization Project fundraiser in March of 2017 with the goal of raising $1.5 million to improve area seniors housing. With the oldest wings built in 1960, and rooms ranging from 150 – 280 square feet in size, they no longer fit the Alberta Government’s standards for senior access. With phase one complete, staff and residents will benefit from additional space

The new wing also included a dining room, living room, and a home care office which has been a long-awaited space in the community. Capital Campaign members were overwhelmed with the generosity of individuals, families, service groups and the surrounding business community, and surpassed their goal with a grand total of $1,586,363 raised. “We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You will see how comfortable our residents are going to be with each room and additional social spaces,” said Sheri Heller, VDHF’s CAO. “You stepped up so much for our seniors. Sask Alta Radio Club – Field Day

At tempting to communicate with people around the world and in outer s p a c e, t h e S a s k A l t a R a d i o C l u b hosted a Field Day at Bow tell Hall from June 23 - 24. The exercise was par t of a Nor th American Field Day where groups across the continent used ham radios from remote locations using generator power and portable antennas to create voice and over 50 additional modes of communication. Members of the club brought their own equipment and began setting up at 8 a.m. on June 23, with communication lasting 24 hours from 12 p.m. on June 23, to 12 p.m. on June 24. “ Our c lub inc lud es all ag es and k i n d s o f p e o p l e a l l w i t h d i f fe r e n t talents; some have a background in engineering or phones, and others just

find it fun. I find the technical aspects interesting, and I love the comradery,” said Don Henry. The Sask Alta Radio Club is a part of L akelan d C o lle g e’s Em erg en cy Measures Plan, and has often hosted t h e eve n t at e i t h e r c a m p u s . W i t h towns creating a lot of electrical noise, the group was eager to try the remote location. However, the challenge this time was the noise from far off lightning. “Ever y amateur radio operator in the world has a unique call sign,” said Henry. Throughout the day, the club used three radios to transmit signals from old repurposed military towers, as well as an antenna made by Stan Sewell from Maidstone, Saskatchewan (VE5SRS). These signals reflected off of the ionosphere landing at different locations depending on the conditions at that

time. Approximately 20 contacts were made within the first two hours including ones in Delta, British Columbia; and North Dakota. An antenna made by Don Henry (VE6VAC) was used with very high frequency to break through the ionosphere to contact the International Space Station, track it from Vancouver to Montreal, by communicating with astronauts who participate in Field Day. D ean S pr o u ll ( VE5SPR) u s e d a computer and FT8 frequency using only 4 or 5 watts to talk around the world situated near the trunk of his car and was able to make contact with someone in Alabama. Dwayne Friedrick from Lloydminster said that it is a fun hobby, being able to interact with different contacts, and that the farthest people he has talked to were in South Africa and New Zealand.

“ We definitely want to get some people out to our classes. Men, women, and youth are all welcome; anyone with a Canadian address,” said Friedrick. Two sessions of the basic amateur radio course will begin in October located in both Wainwright and Lloydminster. For $100, you can learn a new hobby, how radio works, assist in emergency communications, and meet new people around the world. It also includes course instruction, a student manual, an exam, a Canadian Radio Operators License, (when you pass the exam), your first year membership in the Sask Alta Radio Club, and a first year membership in Radio Amateurs of Canada. News stations such as CNN went as far as having makeup artists review the video footage and weigh in on whether or not they thought they were real or fake. DO NOT approach the eyebrow, which is believed to be searching for a Labatt’s and may be armed.” I know I shouldn’t feel delighted by someone being made fun of, but I can’t help it; I’m not a fan of our Prime Minister. The fake eyebrow malfunction was debunked, but I couldn’t resist looking up photos of Trudeau to check out his

week’s paper ) and an easy no-bake Rice Crisp cake. Everyone loves Rice Crisp cake, and it is easy to grab a piece without adding extra dishes to a renovation project. I went to make a Rice Crisp cake, only to discover that the recipe was not printed on the box. I always add more rice crisp cereal than the original recipe, to have enough to fill a 9 x 13 pan, and it turns out well, and the cake is a little less sweet. I went ahead and made the cake using this recipe. The original recipe uses 6 cups of rice crisp cereal and I did find it later printed inside the box. I also have made this cake adding chocolate to get a version that is akin to puffed wheat squares.

Lots of people love Rice Crisp Cake, yet some have told me that theirs is always too hard when they make it. The secret to the right texture is not to overcook the butter and marshmallow mixture. Using mini marshmallow is better than the larger ones because t hey melt qui c ker to t he c ore an d require less heat so that the mixture is less risk to overcook. Cook on low to medium heat, stirring and add the rice crisp cereal when there are still a few small soft pillows of marshmallow in the pot. Have the rice crisp cereal all measured out, so that it can be poured into the pot all at once. Use a large heavy-bottomed pot. Rice Crisp Cake

M e lt t h e but ter o n l ow/ m e d ium heat in a large heavy-bottomed pot. Meanwhile, measure out the rice crisp cereal and set aside. Stir in the marshmallows into the but ter. When the marshmallows are all almost melted, turn off the heat and stir in the rice crisp cereal and pour the mixture in a buttered 9 x 13 and spread. Butter the end of your fingers and pat the cake down. Allow to cool completely before serving.

fatigue, skin rash, swollen glands and headache. For those individuals who do develop Neurological Syndrome, symptoms can be much more severe, including tremors, drowsiness, confusion, swallowing problems, high fever, unconsciousness, paralysis and even death. From 2003 to 2017, 514 cases of West Nile virus were confirmed in Alberta, many of which were acquired here in the province. It Just Might Happen

I t ’s f u n n y h o w when the future goes from being the somewhat unclear an d int ang i b le to actually tangible that it focuses our thoughts more concretely to the idea that maybe that future is something you might be a part of, and if you start taking steps in the direction of the goal over the horizon in the distance you just might get there though you can’t see it with your own eyes for some time. In this case I’m talking about the realm of sport, and in particular soccer (or football everywhere else). Now soccer in the old V-town of my birth wasn’t really on anyone’s radar to any extent. Sure there were soccer balls around, and we kicked them basically at school recess in the winter time between softball backstops standing in for goals. None of the fields even had soccer ‘woodwork’ anywhere really…except as an afterthought add-on to the ‘American’ football uprights. If you were looking for a pick-up game to play with your cousins or schoolmates…soccer never crossed anyone’s mind in the decision process. Soccer was just so far down the chain of priority in stature around here behind hockey, football, baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball, broomball, tennis, curling, dodgeball, and on and on…it seemed as a kid like you had to play your way through of all those before you ever got down to soccer. Or better yet, it earned you derision that you even chose it (although there still may be some of that sentiment). Now in my mid-teens the long tentacles of the sport started to finally make their inroads (and in my case I was somewhat small to play the other sports), and by the mid 80’s the making of a club had started to take shape in Vermilion. It was more

with practices out at the College fields (now dormitories) and friendlies in places like Elk Point with nearby towns like St. Paul or Wainwright. It was fun but never seemed to be beyond organizingly makeshift in nature. By the 90’s the club had built a club house and fields out at the Provincial Park…and it finally felt like the sport in my hometown was getting somewhere. In 1994 a large group of us from the club all travelled together to the big Brazil vs. Canada game at Commonwealth (long story but got separated in crowd of 60000+ from my ride home at the end and nearly ended up having to walk home to Vermilion). So the big wide World of ‘the Beautiful Game’ had arrived here and its best team (at the time) there on display. Soccer was something on the horizon and you could see it. So here we are shortly after the decision was made that a Canadian Premier league is starting up and the World Cup is coming to Canada in 2026. I’m thinking…we may be having actual World Cup games here in Alberta, practically in our front yard. Bigger than the Olympics big, that is. I’ve been involved with the game since grade 3 playing beside the old brick S.R.P Cooper School…and recently back in April stepped up to the exec of the Soccer District here in Tri-County, right next door to the Lakeland District that Vermilion calls home. It is cool just thinking one of our kids that we may be involved with, being now about 10 years old or in their early teens and often travels that old Yellowhead highway with their parents to get to a game, may get to put on that Red Maple Leaf of Canada in 2026. I don’t think it matters what field of endeavour you are in…having that kind of goal out there for you to strive for…it is special and it motivates you, no matter what part you play. You never know…it just might happen.

Between the recent storms, illness and an aging internet set up I have been missing in action the last couple weeks, but all is near normal again except for a decent internet hookup. Considering the first day of summer is yet a couple of days away, June 21 this year, it has been reasonable outdoors, a few storms knocked out all electricity for the better part of a couple of days, but all in all, it has been decent out there. I missed one weekâ€™s column due to instructing a Wilderness Survival course for an entire week near Hardisty, the course was done along the Battle River and was a little different from the Alberta mountain terrain or northern boreal forest scenarios.

However, as in any survival situation, we followed the â€œadapt and improviseâ€? rule. Unfortunately, the fire hazard was very high so except for controlled instruction, fires were nonexistent, but heat certainly wasnâ€™t an issue. It was very warm during the week; another issue was the Battle River was extremely high, still from winter runoff, but it even cooperated during the week, and there were days we watched it go down over a foot overnight. It was so high at first that even finding a rock was a chore, but again we made do, we covered the six steps to survival throughout the week, which is First Aid, Fire, Shelter, Signal, Water, and lastly Food. We constructed an awesome survival shelter without any man-made materials or tools; it was done so well it was waterproof, the river being so high was not a help at first and in fact a danger with deteriorating river banks. We did, however, use the water after showing the proper methods of sterilization and purification techniques, which it needed badly but turned out very drinkable; we spent a full day on all above

steps. Although the steps above are in order of importance and food is on the bottom of the list, and of least importance, we spent two full days covering the topic, due to food being the first thing on one in a survival situation. That is assuming first aid isnâ€™t a life-threatening factor, in a survival situation many perish in the search for food when many times enough food to sustain themselves is all around them, we covered the best 21 edible wild plants, plus what we had at hand. As the river dropped rocky areas became accessible, the river was teaming in freshwater clams and surprisingly lots of fresh water lobster...the crawfish, many which were as big as your hand. On the last day when we covered the weekâ€™s topics, worked on personal projects and explored, I also showed the many uses of an old prospectors metal gold pan, besides boiling water, cooking food, use a shovel, gathering tote ...etc. we even tried to pan gold. I was surprised not only did we find good gold but on how big the gold dust or flour was, the biggest surprise was on how many crawfish we caught while

All in all, it was a great week, which ended with a bang in more ways than one, on the last day when the big thunderstorms with scary lightning moved in, which also knocked out our electrical power. The course a huge success with no loss participants and all surviving, which for a couple of days I thought maybe except one, on the last two days I started to get pains in my lower abdomen. I wondered if maybe I had a touch of â€œbeaver feverâ€? or Giardiasis, which is caused by the giardia parasite, which is common in much fresh water, such as lakes, ponds, streams or rivers, and obtained by drinking the unsterilized water. I wondered if maybe the water we drank was not treated or boiled enough. However I was the only one, I also wondered about â€œbotulismâ€? poisoning caused by contaminated food, but again I was the only one. My puppies including the new kids which are growing like weeds needed me and I needed them, both with attention and time together as that was minimal during that week, but the pains got worse. After a day or so of not being able to move from the couch and pain being so bad, I had to go to the hospital and was told I had a kidney stone, and may be down for a week or more...in holy crap pain. However I am happy to tell you I got lucky and passed it the next morning and we are all back to normal, Iâ€™m back to being overworked and pups are back to being mischievous and happy. Most likely by the time you read this, it will be officially summer, get out there and enjoy it.

Steamfitter/Pipefitter Apprentice Wins Alberta Skills’ Silver

( Ver milion, Alta.) – Confid en c e, perseverance and a competitive skill set are what landed Lindsay Graham a second-place finish at the 2018 Alberta Provincial Skills Canada Competition on June 1. “Although I did expe c t to plac e, I did not expect to be second, but it was an awesome experience and a first for me. I’m proud to have represented Lakeland. I don’t think I would have had the opportunity or desire to compete if I went to a different school,” Graham says. Reflecting on the 12 hours of intense

competition, the second-year steamfitter/pipefitter apprentice from Rocky M o u nt a i n H o u s e, A l t a . ad d e d h er desire to compete was fueled by the confidence Lakeland instilled in her. “I believe Lakeland goes above and beyond providing students with the necessar y skills and knowledge to succeed. Sometimes I find this industry to be very intimidating. It requires knowledge and skill but it also requires responsibility, commitment, and confidence to use that knowledge and skill. And the instructors at Lakeland helped me, especially with my confidence,” she says. “They helped me beyond words and I couldn’t be more grate-

ful for how much they have taught me. That boost in confidence now helps me achieve more in my work.” The competition tested Graham’s understanding and skills in fabricating a piping system and its components, with high regard to quality, workmanship, and accuracy. She says the project was advanced, testing not only her skill set but also her capacity to work with the clock, improvise when she didn’t have what she needed, and to avoid distractions. However, one thing that caught her eye was the number of young women watching her work. “I saw the people that walked by,

including young women, and I could see the curiosity in some of their faces. I wish I could have talked to them and told them all about pipefitting. In the end, it was quite the experience.” Graham is working as a pipefitter with Aecon Mining in Calgar y. She completed her schooling by working on her second and third year backto-back, and passed all the provincial tests and red seal test. Graham says she hopes to expand into construction because she enjoys the fabricating side of pipefitting as well as drawing isometrics.

Our Nation’s history from its beginning to present day is filled with determination, adventure, heartbreak, sorrow, victories and celebrations. It is better than any modern day movie or story that could be told. I encourage everyone to revisit the history of our great nation which has molded and shaped each one of us. In the Vermilion-Lloydminster constituency, as in every constituency in Alberta, we have a rich history of indigenous people and immigrants who made their way to this land. Each family has a heritage which tells the story of the fortitude it took to clear land, hunt, fish, build community and homes to survive the cold Canadian winters. Today Canada remains one of the most popular counties in the world to visit and live. Canadians are greeted around the world with hospitality and f r ie n ds h ip b e c a us e of th os e who went before us. Those who fought and died for the freedom of others paved the way for how people see us as Canadian’s

Vegreville Pysanka Festival

Forty-five years ago under the leadership of President John Huzil, the Vegreville Cultural Association had a vision; plan and host a Vegreville Pysanka Festival to celebrate and showcase a vibrant Ukrainian culture. Throughout the next forty-four years leaders stepped forward, citizens volunteered, sponsors supported and thousands of people were treated to this special event. The Festival grew and continually added events and attractions. But, what did not change throughout the years was each of the subsequent Presidents ensured the Festival continued to be affordable for everyone. Be proud, Alex W. Gordey, Kay McKenzie, Mike Barlott, Alex T. Mandruk, Elsie Kawulych, Orest Olineck, Val Eleniak, Orest Zubritsky, Barry Wilinski, Ron Corry, Tim Baydala and Myron Kruk. President of the 2018 Festival Committee, Myron Kruk proudly declares it is, once again, offering FREE admission to the grounds and numerous cultural venues and events. The only way so appreciate how huge the Festival offering is, is to buy a souvenir copy of the forty-eight page program. All the events are listed and described from the opening of the Social Centre at noon and the Grand Opening ceremony in the Multiplex/Beer Gardens at 2:00 pm on July 6th to the closing of the Festival on July 8th at 5:00 pm. The program provides times and locations of activities. Participate in a vast array of workshops such as pysanka writing (decorated eggs) or dough dove making. Learn how to trace your ancestral roots back to Ukraine, paint floral arrangements, make a vinkopletennia (floral headpiece) or a Ukrainian Ethno Korali (necklaces with beads) or attend an embroidery workshop. Discover the best varieties of culinary herbs and vegetables to grow for traditional Ukrainian cooking and pickling from presenters Elsie Kawulych and Edith Zawadiuk. Discover how the Festival creates a welcoming and comfortable experience by providing dancers and instructors an opportunity to grow and develop in the world of Ukrainian Dance. Featured are dance workshops offered in the Dance Studio - Festival Office and amateur Ukrainian dance competitions for solos, duets and small groups offered in the Multiplex/ Beer Gardens. For music lovers there is no limit. Enjoy performers throughout the entire site including the band showcase during the day, the evening Zabava dances and of course the world-class Grandstand shows. Visit the Pioneer Village for demonstrations; rope making, blacksmithing, leather working, flour making in a stone mill, bread baking in a peeche (outdoor

oven) & so much more. Stop by the “Yarmarok”, a market place where people set up an interesting array of Ukrainian folk arts, crafts and products for sale. Pick up a souvenir Ukrainian blouse or t-shirt, jewellery or a Ukrainian music CD. If the kids are wanting a change of pace spend some time at the petting farm or inflatable fun zone. “The event is a tremendous amount of work,” explains Patricia Shewchuk, Festival Coordinator, “ but as planning is progressing we are excited about how the community is jumping in and supporting this event. Our goal is to provide all our participants and guests with an event that exceeds expectations. Congratulations to the Class of 2030 as they celebrated their Kindergarten Graduation this past week. Two celebrations took place Wednesday, June 20 for the Monday/Wednesday class and one on Thursday, June 21 for the Tuesday/Thursday class. The Gathering Area was decorated with pictures of each student and other artwork done by the students. Family members joined the graduates to celebrate their special day. The kindergarten students sang the song “You, You, You” and “First Grade” a parody of “Shake It Off” entertaining those gathered with memorable moments. Principal, Mr. Chase, handed out certificates to each of the graduates. Guests were treated to cake and juice following the ceremonies. All the kindergarten students traveled to Lloydminster on Friday, June 22, for their End of Year Field Trip. On Monday, June 25, the kindergarten students got to try out grade one for half a day. previous credential while focusing on interpersonal relationships, the animal-human bond, animal assisted interventions, ethics of animal integration into settings, and animal welfare, health and wellness. “There is no other program like this in all of Canada,” says Joanne McDonald, chair of human services. “With this new and emerging industry, it’s important that we provide foundational knowledge and hands-on learning opportunities for professionals to integrate best practices for both animals and people.” Animal assisted wellness students will learn to recognize strengths and limitations associated with incorporating animals in public and professional settings, identify behaviours that are indicators of stress in animals, apply ethical practices, identify health risks for both people and animals, and other important skills. To aid professionals in their work, animals are integrated into a multitude of settings, such as hospitals, schools, libraries, correctional institutes, rehabilitation programs, crisis response programs and veterinary clinics, among others. “We’ve had a wide range of interest from current students and alumni for this type of standardized training,” says Dr. Robyn Rodgers, agricultural sciences instructor.

“Our animal assisted wellness program offers in-demand skills and provides careerladdering knowledge to a variety of professionals who want to include animals in their field of practice.” The animal assisted wellness program culminates in a hands-on animal handling certification process at either the Vermilion campus, Dreamcatcher Animal Assisted Wellness Academy or with a certifying body. Graduates of the program will have the skills and knowledge to understand how animals may be integrated within their professional setting. “Dreamcatcher has developed its practices in animal assisted wellness from international research and through consultation with world-renowned experts in the field for the past 15 years,” says Eileen Bona of the Dreamcatcher Animal Assisted Wellness Academy. “Lakeland takes its education very seriously and ensures students are well-equipped to utilize their education upon graduation. This particular program is imperative and I very much look forward to the success of it.” Animal assisted wellness complements existing programs in human services and agricultural sciences. ‘Indian Horse’ Screenings

Lakeland College hosted two screenings of the film, ‘Indian Horse,’ on June 19, in Vermilion as part of their reconciliation speaker series. Applause filled the Alumni Theatre as it was announced that Tristen MartyPahtaykan from Frog Lake First Nation played a role in the film. Marty-Pahtaykan played Buddy Black Wolf, who he said was the enforcer for the Moose Hockey Team and the joker and protector of the main character, Saul. “Buddy Black Wolf was the tough guy; like Dave Brown from the Edmonton Oilers. The character and I had similarities when it came to working together as a team. When he was on the ice with his teammates that is the kind of attitude I have with my brother’s Samuel & Ricky Marty Jr. When we first started up our acting careers as The Marty Brothers, it was teamwork; no one was jealous of the other brother when we auditioned for the same role. We love working together, brotherhood, Warriors!” said Marty-Pahtaykan. Several students from Kitscoty, J.R. Robson, and Frog Lake gathered with community members to watch the heavy film. Vivid imagery told the story of life in a residential school, and the film touched on spiritual beliefs, loss, survival, confinement, racism, and healing. Clint Chocan, Lakeland College Manager of Indigenous Support Services, thanked everyone for coming and Buffalo Trail Public Schools and the Learning Network for their collaboration. “’Indian Horse’ is a fictional story but is based on the real-life occurrences of thousands of Indigenous people. Indigenous people are not looking for sympathy, but for empathy and understanding. It is not meant to shame anyone, but to provide education,” said Chocan, who explained that the depiction of a culture had been

severely misrepresented for many years. Marty-Pahtaykan said that being part of a film that represents so many real struggles was a challenge, but was also worthwhile. “It was a challenge to re-live the same experiences that my grandfather, “Smoking” Joe Pahtaykan, went through growing up. It was tough, not only for my grandfather but for many others out there. It affected generations and generations of Indigenous people. To see the actual abuse that took place we had to take the audience there, to understand what it has done to the Indigenous people of Turtle Island, (also known as Canada to all Indigenous People across the board). I also want to add that not only Indigenous people are struggling, but also non-indigenous people who have experienced trauma growing up in other similar situations, and in the history of assimilations toward human beings,” said MartyPahtaykan. He went on to say that he didn’t know that Clint Eastwood would, later on, become the executive producer. “We didn’t find out until the film was ready to hit the film festival trail. Knowing that Clint strongly endorsed the film helped bring the film to light. ‘Indian Horse’ is Canada’s first blockbuster without any connections to U.S Film Industry. All of the actors were first timers, except for me and a few others,” said Marty-Pahtaykan. When asked what he loves about being from Frog Lake First Nation, MartyPahtaykan said, “I love the peace and quiet by the lake when I’m not out in the world filming. I love the people who know who we are (The Marty Brothers), and treat us like any other - and that’s personal space and privacy. I also love the support and inspiration we give to our community members.” When asked what he loves about his acting career, Marty-Pahtaykan said,

“Love has a strong, deep meaning. Town Council – Upcoming Cannabis Information Session

RCMP report, stating that the detachment had received 522 calls for service from January 1 - June 14. “Of those, 55 charges were laid or recommended including 14 traffic related, four impaired, four drug-related, three domestic, and four assaults or threats. Of

the 522 calls, there were 76 tickets, 36 traffic collisions, 11 break and enters, 18 thefts of motor vehicles, 18 spousal abuse, 44 alarms, and eight abandoned vehicles. The Vermilion RCMP will be working with the Eastern Alberta District who has developed a crime reduction system that will address and help to resolve the rural crime. The province’s call back unit will handle after hours over the phone issues. Our support staff members are very important to our role in the community. They have processed 334 criminal record checks and 225 front counter complaints. We are waiting on licensing, but anticipate by fall that Vermilion will have an online Crime Map where the public will be able to see what

areas are being hit with crime,” said Boehr. In Economic Development, through the New Commercial Retail Development Incentive Program, Town Council unanimously carried a vote awarding $20,000 to MACK. MACK is a children’s clothing store expected to open in August in the middle portion of the Craig’s Cornerstone building on 50th Avenue in Vermilion. Town Council is planning to host an informal public information session regarding cannabis on July 17, from 4:20 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. The meeting will precede the public hearing at 7 p.m. on July 17, which is scheduled to include land use by-law amendments for lot reclassification, cannabis, and Municipal Government Act regulations.

Shooters Showdown

For some Wild West historical entertainment, you can watch the Border Cowboy Mounted Shooters as they appear at the Vermilion Fair July 27 - 28. Impressive shows of accuracy, shooting black powder blanks at balloon targets while riding timed patterns will take place

on July 27, from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and July 28, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Lakeland College Arena. The mounted shooting finals will take place on July 28, at the grandstand at 3 p.m. Both men and women aged youth to senior are actively involved in this fastpaced sport. Mannville Classic Cruisers are pumped. Their first annual Show n Shine is happening on July 1- Canada Day, at Spruce Park, in Mannville. Registration is 9-11 at $10 per vehicle. Spectators free. Silent Auctions, Prize draws at 3:30 The Mannville and District Chamber of Commerce is hosting their breakfast from 8-11, so things are going to fit perfectly. Supper is at the Golf Course. The Red Brick – Now Open

Community members lined up to try specialty coffees at The Red Brick as soon as they opened their doors for business at 5018 - 50 Avenue in Vermilion on June 18. The health food and coffee bar also offers a variety of light sweets and specialty toasts, brewing supplies, and protein snacks and healthy options. Owner, Emily Ford, is looking forward to serving the community.

“I’ve always been passionate about coffee, and I’m a bit of a health nut. The Red Brick is a really good marriage of everything I love including baking and making people happy. I love experimenting and exploring, and The Red Brick was born out of the fact that from 1906 - 1914, Vermilion had a brick factory, and is now a community space; a central hub for locals to enjoy and relax,” said Ford who grew up in Irma and has lived in the area her whole life.
