Canadian College Finals Rodeo

Hundreds of college rodeo contestants gathered at Lakeland College Vermilion for the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s (CIRA) Finals from March 29 - 31. Students represented British Columbia Equine College, Olds College, NAIT, SAIT, University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, Red Deer College, Medicine Hat College, Lethbridge College, Mount Royal University, University of Saskatchewan, and Lakeland College. Events included pole bending, bareback riding, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, goat tying, team roping and bull riding. Twentyfour competitors represented Lakeland College throughout the weekend, and numerous volunteers assisted with social
events put on by the rodeo team. Judges were Doug Goodine and Larry Adams, and bull fighters were Josh Haeberle and Dakota Simmes. A g at h er i n g w i t h e nter t a i n m e nt welcomed families upon their arrival at the Zoo on March 28. Participants wore blue during the first rodeo performance on March 29, and enjoyed a beef on a bun lunch at the Vermilion Regional Centre on March 30. Jordyn Cornet from Brant, Alberta had a blast at the Canadian College Finals Rodeo competing in breakaway roping and said, “The best part of college rodeo has been making memories with my friends.” Competing for buckles and prize money, competitors and fans had a ton of fun, and finished off the evening on March 31, with a cabaret at the Vermilion Breakaway Roper, Jordyn Cornet, at the Canadian College Finals Rodeo in Vermilion on Regional Centre. “Dogs On Top” – Kitscoty Midget Pitbulls Claim Provincial Championship

Provincials. The team lost to Oyen 3 - 2 in their first provincial game, won against Pincher Creek, and 11 - 3 against Horse Lake. During the semi-finals, they beat out Valleyview who were the returning champions and went on to win the gold medal game against Oyen 5 - 3. “We would like to thank the parents for all of their support getting players to and
from the rink as well as their volunteer support. It definitely doesn’t go unnoticed by the players and the team. The community’s support in making this year possible was unbelievable,” said Paul. Paul noted that in previous years, this team had combined with other communities, and this was the first year to soley have a Kitscoty Pitbulls Midget team.
The Kitscoty Midget Pillbulls prevailed as champions during the Provincial tournament in Taber, held March 22 - 25. Ringing true, head coach Ricky Paul said that their motto all year had been, “Dogs on top!” “Throughout the season, the players worked hard on and off the ice - absolutely giving their heart and soul. The small group grew together in the dressing room and on the ice showing their hard work and determination. With a 16-4-3 record in the league, they were probably not the most talented team, but definitely the team that worked the hardest,” said Paul. Highlights for the Pitbulls included winning their home tournament (the Gordon King Memorial Tournament that began 25 years ago) for the first time in several years, as well as the road to provincials. According to Paul, the team had a pretty convincing win against Mallaig, and won 4 - 1 at home against St. Paul who they hadn’t beaten all year. The 13 skaters and one goalie were assisted by bantam players, having three forwards and a goalie pulled up for Provincial Champions, the Kitscoty Midget Pitbulls. Photo submitted
During his first year of coaching in his hometown, Paul said that he had played Tom Thumb right through Midget hockey in Kitscoty; attending Provincials all three years as a Midget, but lost out all three times. He was thrilled to have prevailed as a coach and noted the support from other coaching staff Matt Sellen and Sean Wyatt as well.

Upcoming Marwayne PBR

The Village of Marwayne will be a bustle on April 6 - 7 as professional bull riders and fans gather at the Arena for the 7th Annual Marwayne PBR. Presented by Garnier Custom Silaging, the weekend is sure to be full of excitement. New this year will be a Junior Bull Riding and Steer Riding event beginning at 7 p.m., along with the ABBI Futurity for a silver donation on April 6. On April 7, doors will open at 5 p.m., and the Wild Pony Races will begin at 6:30. Intermission will feature a Battle of the Breeders Bull Sale, and a dance with live music by the Prairie Dogs to follow. Tickets are $20, or $10 for the dance only, with children 12 and under being free. “We are so excited to see our PBR grow every year. Now with it being a twoday event again this year, with steer riding and junior bull riding Friday, it is truly a family event! The Vermilion Folk Club is expecting a lively show as they host Prince Edward Island’s Gordie MacKeeman and his Rhythm Boys at the Vermilion Legion on April 11, at 8 p.m. This will be a return visit to Vermilion for the performers, as they appeared at an Allied Arts event two years ago. According to http://gordiemackeeman. com/, MacKeeman is known for having crazy legs, and his group gives an engag-
ing, sometimes jaw-dropping stage performance. In 2017, the multi-award-winning group was nominated for the East Coast Music Awards ‘Entertainer of the Year’ and ‘Roots Traditional Recording of the Year’, as well as a Music PEI ‘Touring Artist of the Year’. ‘Bean To Cup’

The aroma drew guests downstairs at the Vermilion Public Library on March 27, as they hosted ‘Bean to Cup,’ a coffee tasting with Prairie Lily Coffee owner, Terry Masikewich. Masikewich shared how and where coffee is produced and noted that most coffee since the 1930’s hadn’t received a ny q u a l i t y c o ntr o l u nt i l re c e nt l y. According to Masikewich, coffee trees are grown in over 70 equatorial countries, with arabica grown for the taste, and canephora –robusta grown for its ability to repel bugs. He said that the roles of women in producing countries are changing, that people are now paid for picking both ripe and unripe cherries, and that advocates are beginning
to improve wages from $5 per day. Masikewich shared that he never originally liked the taste of coffee as his parents left it on the stove all day, and he referenced a memory of his Baba picking buckets and buckets of blueberries. “Most people are familiar with darker roasts, but with specialty coffee that is roasted well, people can taste the unique flavours of each countr y of origin,” said Masikewich. Red coffee cherries are brought to a mill for processing, and a green coffee bean emerges. Roasting the bean transforms the chemical and physical properties of a bean, turning it brown and according to Masikewich, sounds much like popping corn. Masikewich said that ripeness, grow-

ing height, bugs, etc., can contribute to defects and that you can’t make a bad bean taste good. “When it comes to tasting specialty coffee, we have to expand our palettes and open our minds - you never know!” said Masikewich. Guests enjoyed sampling the many varieties of Prairie Lily Coffee, roasted right in rural Saskatchewan, outside Lloydminster. With varieties ranging from fruity to velvety flavours, people were eager to find out where they could find this brand. Annual Cross Walk

Community members gathered at the First United Church on March 30, to participate in the Vermilion Ministerial Association’s Annual Cross Walk. Participants took turns carrying the large wooden cross, and read scriptures at several checkpoints around Vermilion. Singing hymns and worship music as they walked, participants reflected as they braved the cold weather.

Apologies are in order for the column last week. Life managed to fill u p the bu c ket a little faster than I could empty it and something managed to flow over the edges on to the floor. Thankfully the big work project is all wrapped up, soccer tryouts are over, my team took 1st in the “Old Timer” premier league, and an Easter Break without stress is now staring me right in the face. If we could all have that problem, eh? Back to the subject matter of the column. So I’m sure for the most of u s we g ener ally d o n’ t g o t hrou g h each day with a whole lot happening beyond the routine. There are always the jobs that have by their nature a

bit more risk factor than average… exposure to dangerous chemicals or machinery perhaps or being up high and endeavoring to defy Earth’s gravity. It is said that the most dangerous place to be is at home, but I don’t find myself looking to find danger there all that much…climbing on to roofs or running a chainsaw notwithstanding. Hmmm…well, I would never say there is NO risk to remaining breathing and being above ground. So as I drove home this week, it had me thinking of the risks some take going to work each day like our first responders. It’s not every day you get to see them in action, but in this case, it was at the end a relatively uneventful work day on the way home during rush hour in the middle of the Yellowhead highway. As first three then all six lanes of traffic came to a grinding halt to bear witness…a chase by the
RCMP apparently ending under an overpass and an attempt being made to arrest a suspect walking to them with his hands up…right in the center of the eastbound lanes. So it was surprising, once I lost sight of the takedown behind a semitrailer for a few moments, not to see a handcuffed suspect emerge on the other side to be herded into a patrol c ar d o or. Within a few se c o n d s a running figure broke away from the traffic to run south straight up the side of the overpass embankment, then frantically wave traffic to a stop on top of the bridge and disappear out of sight as more police cruisers hurriedly a r r i ve d f r o m t h e e a s t a n d b e g a n tearing across the median, through ditches, and up the on-ramps on the other side. As traffic began to move again, I was left with the vision of a tightening cauldron of officers on foot
and a surely inevitable outcome. So when I arrived home and described what had happened to my kids, they were a bit incredulous at first and asked if I was joking and had just seen it on TV. I thought that was an interesting reaction for them to have but they do know their Dad …but if they haven’t been exposed to anything like it before with their own eyes I suppose that is not necessarily a bad thing. At any rate, it was interesting to witness personally an example of that unofficial Hollywood slogan “They always get their man.” For s o m e…t hat i s t he way t h ey spend their work day. I did take note, however, the next drive home the tracks in the snow going up the overpass embankment were still there…just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Realit y T V indeed.

Bannock is a food that is currently trending and enjoying resurgence in popularity, even in upscale restaurants, such as the River Cree in Edmonton, which I had the pleasure of enjoying their fresh bannock. It is a traditional Canadian dish that was also known as Fry Bread and dates back before the 1800’s in Scotland. It is believed to have been introduced to Canada by the Scottish Fur Traders. Scottish bannock was made with oat flour or peameal, and was more like a scone. The Canadian version uses wheat flour and is more like bread. The very first Bannock I ever had was at a restaurant on the Onion Lake reserve. It was amaz-

ing and I was fortunate to be able to talk to the cook, who graciously shared her method and tips. I have since researched the Native, Métis and Settler recipes and methods, and developed this recipe that works the best with our altitude and flours locally available. If you love fresh bread or donuts, then this might be your new favourite treat. Bannock is a great complement to homemade soups and stews. It can be used as the bun for a burger, and you can sample great bannock burgers at the Clock Tower restaurant in Lloyd. Bannock can also be served warm with butter and jam. There is a lady at the farmers market that makes smaller bannock logs, and fries them up. She then shakes them in bag with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar to coat them. I adore these bits of Canadian history. Bannock makes a great and
1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons sugar 2 cups water Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl. Stir in the water. Do not over stir. Allow to sit for 1 hour. The dough is a bit sticky. Preheat cooking oil at three quarters to one inch depth to 375 degrees in an electric frying pan or deep fryer. Put oil on your hands and form the dough into patties with a hole in the center. When you drop the bannock into the hot oil, the hole in the middle disappears. Cook in the oil until golden brown and then flip the bannock and cook the other side until golden brown. Makes 10. If you are serving bannock at the end of the meal with coffee or tea, you can sprinkle it with powdered icing sugar through a sieve when the bannock is hot out of the frying pan.

Yesterday we had several flocks of geese fly over. If weather predictions are correct those geese may be seen again flying back south, even with another cold snap and few flurries though, spring will come, which will be welcomed by many including myself. I did get out and do some ice fishing, as recently as yesterday, the ice still super thick, our 3ft/meter long ice auger almost still didn’t make it through the ice, but the fishing was good, so it was worth it. My friend Blaine and I were ready at sunrise, and it didn’t take long, and we had some outstanding fish on the ice, one a two-foot-long rainbow trout, the biggest rainbow I have seen in the mid-east region here of Alberta. In fact, it was as big as many lake trout caught, so it was an exciting day even if it was just for the morning, I was back before lunch to check up on the new puppies and momma Miss Oohohh. They were fine of course, but I got to cuddle with every one of them, I try to handle them all equally although I do have my favorites ...and they know it. Bakers in Winnipeg are using bannock dough to make a type of bannock cinnamon bun and baking them instead of frying. I absolutely have to try that, but I am sure I will have to adjust the recipe. Eggs Benny is also a popular dish served in a favourite Winnipeg restaurant. One advantage of bannock is that baking powder is used instead of yeast, making them faster to make than yeast breads. Since retiring from the Insurance industry Vermilion’s Barry Clampitt has been chomping at the bit to find a new niche to work in and it seems he has done just that! Nick’s Family Restaurant is welcoming Clampitt aboard as their new Maitre d’. Clampitts new role will give him the opportunity to remain in a social setting where he can use his excellent customer
service skills along with his ability to supervisor in a fast paced work environment. Clampitt will be welcoming guests to the restaurant, as well as supervising the staff members in both the dining room, and bar area. “I have been wanting to get back in the workforce part-time since my retirement and Nick offered me the opportunity to come work with him. I feel like the social aspect of this position is going to be a
great fit for me. The Vermilion Community Art Club will be hosting their 8th Annual Show and Sale at the Vermilion Regional Centre on April 13 -14. According to show chairman, Sandra Miller, the event in Vermilion is different than most because both viewing and market portions will coincide. Approximately 50 amateur and professional artists are expected from all over east central Alberta. On April 13, from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. there will be free admission for the Meet The Artist wine and cheese event. Attendees will be entered to win the $200 Art Bucks draw and must be in attendance. “We have so much fun! Extremely accomplished musicians, the RGB Trio,
will be playing contemporary jazz. A really nice spread of food will be provided by McDonald’s Family Foods, Cornerstone Co-op, and Lasting Impressions Catering,” said Miller. On April 14, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. there will be a gift table, and various demonstrations including acrylics, charcoal sketching, henna, and oil painting. Artists will include two pottery venues, and a variety of originals, prints, and cards. The club’s featured artist this year is pastel artist, Susan Richardson. “The community has been extremely supportive. The club really appreciates all of your contributions which help to make the show a success,” said Miller who in her passion for painting has worked in the industry for over 40 years teaching, selling, and donating art.

Furtas explains, “The prices of phosphorus-based products have had strong demand in North America. That, and demand in India and Brazil, increased the phosphorous price at New Orleans in late 2017 and early 2018. More production of phosphate will be coming on line, but it is difficult to nail down when.” As for what Alberta producers can expect for the growing season, Furtas says that this is an interesting time in the fertilizer markets. “It is not uncommon to see a fertilizer price increase this time of year. However, prices for nitrogen, which is the big one for Alberta producers, is currently sitting 15 per cent below the five year average.” “ Fer t ilizer ret ail er s an d A l b er t a producers have done a good job investing and increasing bulk fertilizer storage. The February value for urea came in at $466 per metric tonne, or 46 cents per pound: $140 per metric tonne, or 10 cents per pound, lower than the five year average. The monthly anhydrous ammonia price increased in February, putting it back into line with late 2017 prices, converging with the per pound cost of urea. “The current price for ammonia comes in at $818 per metric tonne, or 45 cents per pound,” says Furtas. “That is $140 per metric tonne, or eight cents per pound, below the five year average.” In February, phosphorus-based fertilizers increased $20 per metric tonne to $725 per metric tonne, or 54 cents per pound, sitting at the five year average.

Bull Market AFSC Announces Reduced Insurance Premium Rates For 2018 Growing Season

Lacombe - Many of Alberta’s crop producers will benefit from lower crop insurance premium rates when they insure their crops with AFSC this spring. On average, 2018 premium rates for crops are 8 per cent lower than they were in 2017. The rate change for specific crops will vary depending on the actual loss experience for that crop as well as the risk area. The decrease in premium rates is a reflection of the generally good growing conditions over the past few years, which resulted in positive results for the crop insurance program. The recent experience has also translated into increased yield coverage for many producers in 2018. Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food: “Under the new Canadian Agriculture Partnership (CAP), the federal/ provincial/ territorial partnership agreement, the Government of Canada is committed to offering effective and affordable Agriculture Business Risk Management Programs like AgriInsurance.” Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry: “AgriInsurance continues to play a key role in protecting producers when
the weather turns against them and I encourage producers to contact AFSC to review their existing policies or to learn more about the programs that are available.” Darryl Kay, Interim CEO, AFSC: “We are pleased to be able to reduce AgriInsurance premium rates so producers can manage their risk and get the coverage they need. In addition to reducing rates, we have also made changes to the program itself and how it is delivered. “In response to the feedback received from producers, the following changes have been introduced: • A 10 per cent claim deductible being introduced under the Spring Price Endorsement, which will reduce the premium rate charged to clients between 20 per cent and 30 per cent depending on the crop selected; • Aligning insurance coverage for two new wheat classes after the Canadian Grain Commission reclassified a number of wheat varieties, moving them from Canadian Prairie Spring (CPS) and Canadian Western Red Spring (CWRS) to the new Canadian Northern Hard Red (CNHR) and Canadian Western Special Purpose (CWSP) classes; • Introducing AFSC Connect, just
another way for AFSC clients to conduct their business. The new online platform provides producers with a number of online functionalities that include viewing and managing their account information, chat ting online with Client Contact Centre staff, and conducting a number of transactions, including filing
change requests to make adjustments to their crop insurance policy. The online platform was developed with the needs of AFSC clients in mind, and will continually be enhanced, and developed, to meet their changing needs; • April 30 is the deadline to apply for, make changes to or cancel insurance.

Students used the morning to finalize their performances. At 1p.m. the gym was vibrating with energy as the houses asked that all important question of each other: “We’ve got Spirit, yes we do! We’ve got Spirit, how about you?” The event began with the Swedish Drill, followed by the breath-taking pyramids. All teams showed off their talents and skills with their highly entertaining performances. On St. Patrick’s Day weekend, Mr. Woodward, Assistant Coach Mr. Shayne Swee-
ney, and the team left for Claresholm, south of Calgary to compete in the ASAA 2018 Boys 2A Championship. Their voices were clear, loud and full of energy. Well done, Grade Two! “Carnival” for their residents. It was the first annual Spring Fling Carnival. Many of the residents came out for an afternoon of carnival games, snacks and they even had the chance to throw whipped cream pies at management. Congratulations to all the Spartan badminton players who competed in the tournaments in Wainwright on Saturday, March 24. Both our Sr. Team and Jr. Team were in action. Congratulations to those Spartans who played their personal best and Cody Jackson/Trista Minish -Gold Mixed Doubles, Shae Collins/Janyl Bardoel -Gold Girls Doubles, Perry Anderson/Jesse Rogan - Silver Boys Doubles. On Friday, March 23 elementary students held their Jump Rope for Heart Event. Grade 1 to 5 students gathered in the gym to spend the hour skipping. Each class would take turns skipping for a minute. Students were treated to a fruitsicle at the end of their hard work. Our amazing students, with the generous support of our community, were

Tickets are $10 each and there are only 1000 tickets printed. Prizes are: 1st - 25 per cent of ticket sales, 2nd - 15 per cent of ticket sales, 3rd - 10 per cent of ticket sales. All tickets are to be returned to the office by 10:00 on April 30. No late sales returns will be accepted. The proceeds will go towards transportation for class field trips. St. Jerome’s School held their annual Gymnastics Day on March 28. The audience was amazed at the flexibility and strength of Grades 4 - 12 students who participated in Swedish drills and pyramid formations. In friendly competition, students represented their school houses, with Cartier
placing 1st, Mackenzie 2nd, and Fraser 3rd. An event bulletin read, “While we all take pride in belonging to our individual house, at the end of the day we come together to compete as one body against all comers; because ‘Once a Spartan, always a Spartan.’”

Local Flying Club Hoping To Take-Off
Submitted With the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) aims and objectives in mind, a group of local residents are in the beginning stages of forming a Vermilion Flying Club and invite anyone with aviation interest to join. The first meeting will be April 12th at 5:00 PM at the Vermilion Airport Terminal Building. In early 2017 the Town of Vermilion formed an Airport Advisory Committee that consists of Councillor Greg Barr, Councillor Rob Pulyk, and local airport users Darcy Balaneski, Rick Bozak,
and Shawn Jacula. A local flying club is on this committees strategic plan as well as other tasks to increase economic growth for the area by means of aviation. With exciting services coming to the airport soon, it is bound to increase traffic. A flying club is a great way for those interested in aviation to get involved or those who have left aviation to get back into the air. COPA’s aims and objectives include; a) to foster enthusiasm for aviation within the community.

Myrnam Pond Hockey Season Concludes

On March 21, the Myrnam Pond Hockey group concluded another successful year of pond hockey for the children of Myrnam and the surrounding area. The final day ended with the kids doing battle against the parents. This year there were approximately 20 kids participating.
